Upgraded to 64GB N6P, signal and data speeds worse than old one - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was reaching the limits of my 32GB device so I bought what looked like a good one on Swappa. It's in very good condition and seems well cared for, and everything works fine. I've unlocked the bootloader and installed the same ROM (Pure Nexus) and versions as my 32GB unit had. The problem is that I often see H where my brother, who has the same phone, sees LTE. I often can't use the phone, where he can. It basically seems that the signal is worse on my new phone than the other ones. I've checked the baseband version and they are the same.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be? I am thinking of sending it in for support.
Thanks

Have you checked your apns? I would look and see if there are any missing or if something doesn't look right. If so manually key APN in and see if that resolves your issue.

You can usually find your apns on whatever carrier you have website just Google around shouldn't be too hard..

Is your latest phone a NA model or International? You didn't say but are you on the same carrier as your brother? Have you swapped SIM cards to rule that out?
Clone your brother's APN/ settings exactly. You can either edit an existing APN or start a new one.
Both of you run an app called LTE Discovery to find out which LTE band your brother's phone is on and what his signal strength is, at the same time you have different signal strength. Are you on the same LTE band with different signal strength? Are you on a different, weaker band? Why isn't your phone connecting to the same "stronger" band? Swap the SIM card, to see if the "good" LTE band follows the SIM or stays with his phone.

I haven't swapped out SIM cards and we are on the same carrier (T-Mobile). However, I didn't think it was necessary, because my prior phone, a 32GB N6P, performed perfectly and we always seemed to have the same signal more or less.
I have checked the APNs and they are set the same.
We installed LTE Discovery. Often I would not have LTE while he would have it. A few times when he had it and I didn't, I tried using LTE Discovery to restart the radio. Once, it switched to LTE but soon after that downgraded back to H.

Unfortunately you have no warranty if you bought the phone on Swappa. You can always try a factory reset and see if that helps. Maybe the previous owner did some software mods that are causing an issue. Are you on stock? Latest build and radio? Are you a Verizon customer or another carrier? Verizon has had their own builds in January and February partly because of radio issues. Are you using a case or screen protector? If so you might want to try using the phone naked to ensure nothing is interfering with the antenna. You could also contact your carrier and check if they see anything on their end. That helped me once when I was having signal issues. You should also be able to get a new sim from your carrier for free, which is worth a try.

The phone apparently has Nexus Protect in place, and maybe there is still factory warranty remaining? The phone came stock, but I've installed Pure Nexus/TWRP installed, exactly the same as my other phone. Latest radio. T-Mobile customer. Thanks

No, nothing new. I was going to switch to a different phone because it might just be something quirky with that one. No other ideas...sorry.

Note 4 exynos LTE problem

does anyone have this problem? i have a friend in the same room with lg g3 on his hand connected with the 4g lte. i have my note 4 with lte capable sim but i got only h+. i really hate this feeling that the g3 beats my note 4 in connectivity issues.. any help will be much appreciated. btw im from philippines and my carrier is smart. tia.
I thought the Exynos CPU wasn't LTE capable? I thought that's the whole reason why the US (which is where I live and LTE is abundant and a big selling point) variant's all use the Snapdragon CPU.
If I'm right, then your phone can't use LTE because it doesn't have the proper hardware. It wouldn't matter if you put in a sim capable of LTE. It would be like having a WiFi router that's capable of a/b/g/n/ac and trying to use a phone only capable of seeing a/b/g signals. The router (the cell tower) would be putting out all signals, yet the phone would not be able to see the n or ac signals.
Another thing is that you may need to have your provider register the phone's IMEI. I had this happen with my old phone, which was LTE capable, but it only got H+. Turns out that the ATT guy didn't register the IMEI, so ATT thought I was still using the phone prior, which was an S2 and wasn't LTE capable. The was basically a cap on the account preventing me from getting lte.
no sir.. Exynos variants are also LTE capable.. I have my LTE in some open roads when i ride the bus.. but my confusion is that my friend and i was in the same room but he has lte in his g3 (he also have the ip5s but sell it which also have lte in that room) while my note 4 only reached the h+.. it hurts actually.
Well I am on 910C, and I have a pretty good coverage in 4G. I didn't notice any difference when I transit from my Note 2 to Note 4, it is the same reception I have been getting..
well, its hard to accept things in here but I think I cant do anything about it. Thanks btw.

Oh ok. I misunderstood your initial post and I thought I read somewhere that the Exynos version couldn't work with lte.
Stupid question, but are you both on the same carrier? If so then I have no clue why one phone would get lte and the other not. Unless the G3 has a better antenna or something.

Yes we have the same carrier which is SMART. All the difference I know is that his sim came from a smart plan while mine does not. I just bought it from a smart store. I think it wasn't the problem anyway but i cant think of any differences. He has iphone5s before he got the g3 and also got 4g in that room.
I got the same problem as you, and Samsung confirmed that my device has radio defects. And soon I will get the replacement.

If possible swap sim card with your friends sim card, easiest way to isolate problem.
i never tried to swap sim card with him but i already tried another LTE sim card but the result is the same. did you think my note has a problem.? im going to attach pictures. mine is the ss and the picture from camera is the g3. we are in the same room as well.
Can you post this two screen shot, this is mine.
no problem. this is mine. I already checked if the LTE is enabled but got no luck. :crying:
Buddy, I sent you a pm.
Your device is defect, i've returned a 910C with a problem like this, no calls possible in 4g3g2g and 3g2g auto mode, extremely unstable lte and umts data connection, etc. unusable. They swapped the motherboard, i think, because of a better asv group for cpu now and a resetted knox and custom counter. IMEI is still the same. Well, now everything works, i've stable lte and umts and i calls work.

Nexus 6p cannot receive calls if LTE is enabled

Hello everyone!
I hope you can help me because it is driving me nuts. I got a brand new nexus 6p and since day one i cannot receive calls while lte is on, i can make calls but it takes a while to connect. If i switch to 3g, the problem goes away, but i think it is also affecting battery life. I barely manage to get full day with medium usage. I tried custom roms like CM but still the same, yesterday installed android N, so will see if battery life improves, so far not bad... I tried changing apn but no luck either. Also tried flashing different radio, no luck.
Tried calling google but since the phone was not bought from google store they cannot replace it. I am pretty sure it was an update that f#$%&d it up, because i tested the phone before buying and it was receiving calls, but after update all changed.
I hope you guys know a solution to my problem.
Thanks!
If an update has caused your issue, do you know when your Nexus was updated? Was it updated by the seller before the deal was made or did you perform an update after you made the purchase? Who is your carrier? Not sure if it will help but if you are with Verizon, do you have VoLTE enabled on your account and have Enhanced 4gLTE enabled on your device? What version of Marshmallow were you using before switching to Android "N"? Also, are you rooted with a custom recovery or are you using stock Android MM? Have you performed a full wipe and fast boot flashed the latest factory Marshmallow image to see if that changes anything?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The phone is european model and i am using it in Lithuania, carrier is Bite. Phone was on 6.0 when i got it and then it updated maybe 4 or 5 times. Only next day i noticed the battery drain and that i could not receive voice calls. Also if i dial *#*#4636#*#* only usa, japan, cellular 800 and pcs comes up, no euro band. I tried everything, stock, full wipe, custom roms, different radios, maybe i am flashing wrong stuff?
I have tried flashing android n and also tried ota, still cannot receive calls, well sometimes it works for few times and then i cannot receive calls again. I tried flashing a rom which brought back an option to select euro band but that did not help either. At least the battery seems to be better now, i got 4 hours screen on time and after 12 hours still had 20% left.
Which Nexus do you have? XT1100 or XT1103? Just out of curiosity, do you know what bands you are normally connected to? LTE Discovery from the Play Store is a great app to see your current band information. BITE - Lithuania uses bands 3, 7 and 20 for LTE. Band 1 is for UMTS. After doing some research I see that BITE does not have VoLTE on their networks. Another question, what do you have your "Preferred Network Type" set as? Global, LTE/CDMA etc..? We can figure this out. Just need to keep working through the process and eliminate what it cannot be that is causing the issue. I'll keep looking for you though and post back when I find something for you. If anything comes to mind or if something you do changes let me know.

The model is H1512. The preffered network type is lte/cmda/umts auto (prl).
Not sure how to use lte app, so i have attached a screenshot.
I really appreciate your help!
Can you check your "About Phone" section and see if your IMEI and MEID are actually there and not all zeros or something funny? Next, in "Apps", disable Google Connectivity Services, uninstall all its updates and then let the Play Store update Google Connectivity Services. Let me know what that does.

The IMEI is fine, also there is no gsm emergency calls only in the menu and I had chroma installed and that did not help, but i cant remember if i tried changing band while on chroma, so i will try that and will let you know.
P.s. uninstalling google connectivity services did not help.
Not only you, I am on sprint in Chicago, and currently experiencing the same issue you have. No one has a clue as to why either. LTE = No calls for me.

I knew I wasn't the only one And don't think that it is a faulty device. Hopefully we will find the answer!
So I installed chroma ROM and unfortunately that did not help either, on top of that my camera would not work so I flashed stock 6.0

Considering purchase of 6P directly from Google store...
This discussion is EXTREMELY interesting to me. A big thanx from me to everyone that has contributed to this thread.
I am a professional programmer and computer geek. I am currently suffering with a retail, locked down, bloated Samsung Galaxy S5, and was considering replacing it with the DEVELOPER version of the Nexus 6P, purchasing it directly from the Google Store. What I'm looking for is a developer phone that has trouble-free 4G/3G voice and data connectivity, at least 16 GB of RAM, at least 128 GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot would be nice to have.
Looks like I may have to consider other options, as it appears that the 6P is not all that it's hyped up to be.

If you are buying it from google directly then you are safe. If it happens that you receive a faulty device they will send you a new one and only then you send them back the faulty one. Verizon compatibility

Will the Axon 7 work on Verizon's Network?
Eventually, Zte is still waiting for Verizon to give the green light. What I'm wondering is, even if Verizon hasn't given the green, would it work if I put my sim card in. The phone has all the bands.

Yeah. I was thinking about that. When the salesmen at Verizon saw my Nexus 6p they had no idea what it was and it has worked fine.
Would be nice if it worked on Veryzone and also had a BL unlock but some dreams are just never gonna happen
I hope I'm wrong so much

According to ZTE, the device has the correct antennas for CDMA usage (and FCC testing documents confirm that they tested CDMA usage). I asked an employee on the ZTE forums the clarify if it was enabled in both the hardware and software, but after watching the webinar that they posted on Youtube, they made it sound like it was disabled in the software. For now, it sounds like CDMA usage is disabled for all CDMA carriers until they get approval from Verizon and Sprint.
I'm anxious for CDMA compatibility, as this would make the A7 the first dual-SIM phone to fully support US CDMA carriers. (the OP3 only supports CDMA Band 0, missing Band 1 for whatever reason, and Sprint's Band 10)
I would be kind of surprised if the webinar were accurate as the specs on ZTE's Axon 7 sales site clearly show CDMA 0/1/10 support with no caveats. It would seem to be false advertising if these bands were disabled out of the box...but we'll see.
EvDO isn't mentioned but it's in the FCC filings and is kind of implied anyway.
Plus, Verizon is supposedly required to allow all band 13 devices on its network as a condition of their 750MHz license...so I'm pretty sure the Axon 7 will work even if not initially.
Agreed on the huge importance of the dual SIM/Verizon thing...that's a major step forward for people who want dual SIM CDMA (I count myself I that group!)
http://www.pcmag.com/review/346194/zte-axon-7
I emailed this guy for clarification and he confirmed his is working on Verizon and sent screen shots to show it...
I'm so close to ordering this phone. A lot of the places have a restocking once it is open. Just want to see if it works out of the box.
I see his phone states Verizon, but it says he is roaming. Can we get a pic with LTE or 4G on the display?
Thanks
Here is a screenshot showing mine on Verizon and LTE. Still shows as roaming though, but it's definitely LTE speed as you can see.

Yeah so I just went out for a bit. It's really unstable I believe it must be because Verizon hasn't fully certified it to use on their network. The LTE will work for about an hour then it cuts off altogether and just shows roaming. Then if you reboot the LTE is back. I'll investigate some more but for now I'm not sure I'd recommend using it on Verizon. It works much nicer on T-Mobile and ATT
My oneplus 3 shows roaming on Verizon also, but it works fine. Im just not in love with it. So it's going back for the Axon 7.

Simultaneous voice and data on Verizon requires VoLTE, which won't be added until Verizon approves it for their network.
Hi everybody - I've used a dual SIM adapter with my Nexus 5x and 6 with Verizon and I've found that the "Global" and/or "LTE/GSM/CDMA (PRL)" radio modes can cause problems with Verizon...the "LTE/CDMA auto (PRL)" is the only one that works properly...I ordered an Axon 7 myself so I'll definitely be experimenting too but just in case someone wants to open the testing menu (i.e., *#*#4636#*#* , "Phone Information") and try this out I figured I'd pass it on...I'm really hoping we can get VZW working perfectly on this device!
Sometimes the Preferred Network Type menu in settings also has this option (see screenshot).
On dual SIM phones I know from my OnePlus 2 experiences the testing menu can be finicky to get to work as I think it doesn't always apply to correct SIM (It seemed to always apply to SIM one on the OP2) so maybe this won't do any good but I figure it's worth trying?
Also, airplane mode may have to me toggled after switching modes to make this work...my Nexus 5X doesn't need this step to make things work but the Nexus 6 does.
I'm in Detroit area as well. I'll have mine in the morning as I'm picking it up from BB. I'll fiddle with the settings. I have both Verizon & T-mobile.

I leave my Motorola devices on "LTE/GSM/CDMA (PRL)" (E2 and G4, and although I don't have one, the Moto X Pure defaults to it) and I have no issues connecting with Verizon. Stick it my Verizon SIM and it auto-connects, stick in my T-Mobile SIM and it auto-connects, stick Verizon back in and it auto-connects. The dual-SIM adapter might be causing the issues, as I've tried using one before, but it would force my phone into "TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE" mode and neither SIM would end up connecting, and forcing it to "LTE/GSM/CDMA (PRL)" didn't fix anything. Since the A7 is natively dual-SIM, it shouldn't have the same issues.
Also, it seems that only SIM1 is CDMA enabled, SIM2 is GSM/WCDMA/LTE only.

Yeah - agree totally...without the dual SIM adapter, "Global" works just fine on all my devices too...there's no doubt the adapter is the issue.
What made me think of the radio mode issue was the commenter above that said the phone is "unstable..." - that's exactly how I'd describe the behavior of the phone in "Global" mode with the dual SIM installed. It works for a little while then goes to No Service and sometimes shows the Roaming icon for a bit, which seems to be a somewhat similar behavior he was experiencing, though a bit quicker in its onset.
I think the real issue with Verizon is activation, right? If you have a SIM from another device you can pop it in and go, but if you need a new activation is when it gets sticky with Verizon. They give the whole, "it's not in our system" line...

People who have tested the phone with a pre-activated SIM are the ones reporting the issues. Some have been lucky enough to not have any or only minor issues. I'm wondering if it has to do with the bands or frequencies people may be on in different areas.
I really wish we could get a solid answer from either ZTE, Verizon, or the users. I would really like to get this phone but can't take the chance of buying an expensive paperweight.

s7 edge is having trouble with TMobile's LTE mobile data

So I recently purchased s7 edge g935fd from Taiwan. The phone was working fine there in Taiwan. When I came back to the States, however, the phone seems to have trouble connecting TMobile's LTE mobile data. The LTE goes on and off , no matter where I am. The phone still says that it is connected to LTE even when the data is not loading. I tried to reset the APN setting but no avail. I also tried that sim card on my old ASUS Zenphone 2 and the LTE worked fine so it is probably not the sim card's fault. The weird thing is that I can still call, text, and even use 3g network, it's only LTE that is not working properly. Anyone got a solution to this?
Have you gone to settings>mobile networks and checked if it's set to auto connect?
I took off unlimited data from my account because **** sucks here In Aurora Colorado. Isn't worth an extra 20 a month when I got WiFi at home and at work. Plus 2gb free is cool with me. Still got bingeon

I used to have a note from Verizon Unlocked, but seems they've done that on and off signal quite a lot. Since their phones from T-Mobile have everything pre-installed, you can't even delete or edit their APN.
That's why I got a phone with then GS7E works like a charm.

Oh well. Like I said even with that sht I can NEVER load a video on Netflix on my lte, I would miss flights before this crap loads. I like t-mobile because it's the only one that's "good" in my area if t-mobile is "good" I don't want to know what's bad. That's cool it works for you. But I rather pay $55 a month for text talk and 2gb of free data

I have a 935FD on TMO and never have had a problem. I actually have a 935T also, just made sure the APN's matched. The FD however, has never shown an LTE icon although it shows connected to LTE in settings. This could be to being rooted and running a custom rom. But to your main question, again, I've had no issues.

So you bought and international version? I think I may have to do the same for the Note 7 but not sure how compatible the international versions are with T-Mobile

Yes, I bought an International version after realizing it would probably be some time before the 935T got root. From what I understand, and don't quote me on this, but the international version of just about anything is compatible with TMO or any other GSM network. The Note 7 should be just as compatible as my 935FD is with TMO.

Do you get wifi calling with the international version? It also seems Samsung won't honor the warranty and SquareTrade won't as well since Samsung isn't.

No, and that is the only reason I've kept my TMO version is for the wifi calling. If the buildings where I work weren't blast proof we would have cell signal inside them. Since we don't, the wifi calling is our only Option, besides landlines of course. For all these reasons we're talking about is why I'm looking at getting an HTC 10. I'm getting tired of all the Samsung lock down on stuff.

Lol that's the exact problem I have at work there is absolutely no service in certain parts. It's pretty sad for T-Mobile. We're basically forced to get there version.

Galaxy s10 (all models) LTE issues

How many people are having the LTE issues?
Samsung had me reset my Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings to try and fix the issue. Of course that didn't help. What does my Bluetooth and WiFi settings have to do with Cellular service? I think they are grasping because there is an actual defect in the phone. I purchased it directly from Samsung but I'm on Sprint. Sprint has acknowledged an issue but I didn't get it through them so I'm out of luck. When you spend over a thousand dollars on a phone, you expect it to work. I had two dropped calls this morning while driving in an area that has service. The phone is basically unusable unless you are on Wi-Fi. (at least with mine) I have a Galaxy s10 +

Same here with my Sprint Galaxy S10 Plus I'm Roaming 95% of the time and when LTE does kick in nothing loads. So I have to use Wi-Fi.
Exynos S10+ on T-mobile, no LTE issues on my model.
I mean, there is 3 totally different modems (exynos, qualcomm lte and qualcomm 5g), putting the title as all versions is novice at best, and click bait at worst.
Also something to keep in note, Sprint acknowledging a fault doesnt necessarily mean there is a fault or that it is a known issue, its just "good" customer service, they simply cant troubleshoot with the level 1 support, so its easier just to replace your device.
Anyway no issues with my Exynos (G975F) in Brazil with dual sim

No, there is an issue with the Sprint version of the phone
No LTE issues with the unlocked on T-Mobile...
I've been having issues with my Unlocked S10+ on ATT. About every other day I lose my data but it still shows LTE, and this notification pops up. I don't get my data back until I restart my phone 1 or 2 times..
Side note: I've been getting this notification since I got my phone at the beginning of march. ATT can't seem to help me or even give me an answer to what's going on

Sorry about that, I just assumed since it's Sprint they were all Qualcomm LTE (which of course I am on) Wish I could edit the title to give a more detailed so it's not misleading.
It's funny though, if I run a speed test, speeds are great on LTE. It's just connecting takes forever, then the connection doesn't stay.
Don't get me wrong, I love everything else about the phone.

Are you on a prepaid plan by chance? Been an issue for AT&T for years now.

Others have posted online with the same issue since 2015. Do a quick Google search and you'll see. Some switch to a "postpaid" plan and the issue goes away. And some didn't have any issues until getting a new phone.

You know anyone on a postpaid plan with AT&T you could possibly swap SIM's with temporarily to see if the issue persists? Not sure how often it happens, if it's only once a day it may not be a feasible option.
May be able to be resolved with AT&T's firmware?
Did your Note 9 have AT&T's firmware or was it Samsung's unlocked firmware?

I'm getting very slow lte speeds on my s10plus Snapdragon with Verizon in my house which usually has a strong connection. 6mbps is terribly slow
ADS3 update with fingerprint patch and fresh factory reset. I did not use any restore methods. Just setup from scratch

Same location just restarted my phone and downloads instantly shot up to 50mbps. Better but still not right. I shouldn't have to restart my phone every few hours to be able download at a decent speed on lte

What carrier are you on? Factory unlocked?
So, I switched from Sprint to T-Mobile and the issue followed. I figured out that when I connected to LTE it would connect to band 2 or 4. If it does, my data stops working completely. I went in and disabled bands 2 and 4 and it works now.
I think there is an actual issue with the phone on bands 2 and 4. Just my opinion....
I'm completely up to date on the software as well.
