Nexus 6p cannot receive calls if LTE is enabled - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello everyone!
I hope you can help me because it is driving me nuts. I got a brand new nexus 6p and since day one i cannot receive calls while lte is on, i can make calls but it takes a while to connect. If i switch to 3g, the problem goes away, but i think it is also affecting battery life. I barely manage to get full day with medium usage. I tried custom roms like CM but still the same, yesterday installed android N, so will see if battery life improves, so far not bad... I tried changing apn but no luck either. Also tried flashing different radio, no luck.
Tried calling google but since the phone was not bought from google store they cannot replace it. I am pretty sure it was an update that f#$%&d it up, because i tested the phone before buying and it was receiving calls, but after update all changed.
I hope you guys know a solution to my problem.
Thanks!

If an update has caused your issue, do you know when your Nexus was updated? Was it updated by the seller before the deal was made or did you perform an update after you made the purchase? Who is your carrier? Not sure if it will help but if you are with Verizon, do you have VoLTE enabled on your account and have Enhanced 4gLTE enabled on your device? What version of Marshmallow were you using before switching to Android "N"? Also, are you rooted with a custom recovery or are you using stock Android MM? Have you performed a full wipe and fast boot flashed the latest factory Marshmallow image to see if that changes anything?

Hi,
Thanks for your reply.
The phone is european model and i am using it in Lithuania, carrier is Bite. Phone was on 6.0 when i got it and then it updated maybe 4 or 5 times. Only next day i noticed the battery drain and that i could not receive voice calls. Also if i dial *#*#4636#*#* only usa, japan, cellular 800 and pcs comes up, no euro band. I tried everything, stock, full wipe, custom roms, different radios, maybe i am flashing wrong stuff?
I have tried flashing android n and also tried ota, still cannot receive calls, well sometimes it works for few times and then i cannot receive calls again. I tried flashing a rom which brought back an option to select euro band but that did not help either. At least the battery seems to be better now, i got 4 hours screen on time and after 12 hours still had 20% left.

Which Nexus do you have? XT1100 or XT1103? Just out of curiosity, do you know what bands you are normally connected to? LTE Discovery from the Play Store is a great app to see your current band information. BITE - Lithuania uses bands 3, 7 and 20 for LTE. Band 1 is for UMTS. After doing some research I see that BITE does not have VoLTE on their networks. Another question, what do you have your "Preferred Network Type" set as? Global, LTE/CDMA etc..? We can figure this out. Just need to keep working through the process and eliminate what it cannot be that is causing the issue. I'll keep looking for you though and post back when I find something for you. If anything comes to mind or if something you do changes let me know.

The model is H1512. The preffered network type is lte/cmda/umts auto (prl).
Not sure how to use lte app, so i have attached a screenshot.
I really appreciate your help!

Can you check your "About Phone" section and see if your IMEI and MEID are actually there and not all zeros or something funny? Next, in "Apps", disable Google Connectivity Services, uninstall all its updates and then let the Play Store update Google Connectivity Services. Let me know what that does.

Another thing, use *#*#4636#*#* select phone info, scroll down and see if it says "GSM Service Emergency Calls Only. If so then that is more than likely your root cause.

Do me a favor and flash Chroma to your 6P and select the band that works in Lithuania. Chroma has more bands available and I bet that ROM will fix your issue.

The IMEI is fine, also there is no gsm emergency calls only in the menu and I had chroma installed and that did not help, but i cant remember if i tried changing band while on chroma, so i will try that and will let you know.
P.s. uninstalling google connectivity services did not help.

Not only you, I am on sprint in Chicago, and currently experiencing the same issue you have. No one has a clue as to why either. LTE = No calls for me.

I knew I wasn't the only one And don't think that it is a faulty device. Hopefully we will find the answer!

So I installed chroma ROM and unfortunately that did not help either, on top of that my camera would not work so I flashed stock 6.0

Damn. OK. I'm still working on it for ya. A friend of mine is bringing his Nexus 6P over in a little while. He is having the same issue. This way I can have the device in my hands instead of just doing research. I'll let you know what I come up with

Use the Nexus 6p test menu again, (*#*#4636#*#*) and set the Preferred Network Type to LTE/GSM auto (PRL). Select Get PDP List.
Also, select the USA Band and after you are done, reboot. *See if that allows you to make calls

Considering purchase of 6P directly from Google store...
This discussion is EXTREMELY interesting to me. A big thanx from me to everyone that has contributed to this thread.
I am a professional programmer and computer geek. I am currently suffering with a retail, locked down, bloated Samsung Galaxy S5, and was considering replacing it with the DEVELOPER version of the Nexus 6P, purchasing it directly from the Google Store. What I'm looking for is a developer phone that has trouble-free 4G/3G voice and data connectivity, at least 16 GB of RAM, at least 128 GB of internal storage, and a microSD slot would be nice to have.
Looks like I may have to consider other options, as it appears that the 6P is not all that it's hyped up to be.

If you are buying it from google directly then you are safe. If it happens that you receive a faulty device they will send you a new one and only then you send them back the faulty one. Nexus 6p is amazing phone, i had iphone 6s plus and replaced it with this one and i am still happier now even if i cannot get lte speeds

VoLTE on Nexus 6 on AT&T....

Don't get your expectations high (if VOLTE availability is a concern anyways) but all internal paper for sales for the Google Nexus 6 (branded as Nexus 6 by Motorola) does not appears that a VoLTE capacity will be a sales point with AT&T for the Nexus 6.
To be fair with AT&T, Voice HD is not deployed on all markets and I guess AT&T does not wanna screw up on this but yet again, the device we all know is VoLTE capable but seems AT&T might not provision on rate plan speaking the feature.
Of course this is as of know I have seen all documentation.
Might update when the device gets circulated officially.
You may be able to add the ims settings for att. I have been meaning to try this on my maxx.
Sent from my XT1080 using Tapatalk
The APNs Settings sound plausible, I will preorder mine by midday.
I will try to confirm with the Store's representative if there any update.
***Update****
No one at Store knows if the device will physically have the HD Voice capacity turned on.
So, I hope that via settings or APNs do the trick.
Does anyone have the ims settings for att volte?
I too am interested in getting this working if possible. Does VoLTE work on ATT with the Nexus 6?
Right now HD voice is limited to a select few handsets in a select service area ATT did not go nationwide at once like Verizon. In order to be HD it also has to be a call to another compatible ATT phone also located in the select service area.

Have to talk to them on why. You might see nexgen in apn thats their volte apn but at&t never enabled it. I haven't seen anything att volte related on shamu, just Verizon. I recall when we (Bliss) added support. I couldn't live without it. Lol had it for 2+ years. So ask att why they won't enable the APN. Get on them.

I just had a live chat with someone from AT&T and he told me if HD Voice is in your area, it should automatically connect and you shouldn't have to enable anything. I'll have to try it out and see if he was right or not.
HD voice may be in "your area" and most likely is. You just can't access it. With a Nexus 6... Put your sim in another nexgen phone and BAM you've got volte. ie gs6, g4, etc, n6-nope.

They have it, probably large coverage. They just never activated it on N6. Be specific when you call. And ask why do you not enable volte APN on the N6.

It's enabled in alot of areas but not for the Nexus 6, put your sim in an iPhone 6 and you will see it works if its active in your area, they just never activated it on the back end for the nexus 6

Wanted to take a look but the URL is invalid
@EpicKip: The link was working yesterday, however I know why it was deleted: it involves using the IMEI of another device. The moderators likely believed this to be an end run around the site's rules regarding discussions about changing the IMEI, as in this case the IMEI change is done at the carrier rather than on the device.

It was left up to me whether I wanted to keep it going. I was allowed to leave it up but considering the conflict amongst mods I let it be. The method however is still working for me.
Ok so I came to the conclusion that doing this unless it is an AT&T branded Nexus 6 is not possible. However, for a brief period of about 2 minutes a few weeks ago I was able to get IPv6 working on LTE after yelling at AT&T support for an hour or so and giving them some AT&T IMEI I found from searching on eBay for a galaxy s8. It was giving me an IPv6 ping for a brief period (WiFi was disconnected and disabled on the N6 and I have IPv6 disabled on my router for the home network so I know it was from LTE).
It stopped working after that brief period when it probably recognized I was using a non at&t Nexus 6 and then I gave up.

They didnt bother me quite the opposite. They took in under consideration if it violated XDA terms. They actually ruled in my favor. I dont blame them for checking what I was doing thoroughly so it didnt violate XDA rules. However doing it this way should take the branding out of the equation. As my OP5t isnt branded.

@apophis9283 Do you or anyone else know of any ROMs for Nexus 6 that work with VoLTE (maybe for AT&T or have VoLTE at all in the ROM) specifically using the carrier side IMEI workaround? I'm running DU 7.1.2 right now and I cannot get VoLTE to work for the life of me. I see no option to disable the VoLTE icon in the statusbar icons settings either so this makes me think maybe this ROM has no VoLTE support.

I FINALLY got MMS working on my T-Mobile account. I set all the settings up the way that T-Mobile says to on their website but I could only get normal SMS not MMS or group texting to function. Because of all the reports of it working and I couldn't get mine to work I finally just did a master reset and THAT DID IT. I guess the problem all along was the restore I did. When I first got the phone and did the setup I did the restore from a previous install which was a Lumia 925 running Windows Phone 8.1 and I would suspect that it doesn't transfer properly because when I reset the phone and started from scratch all my MMS settings worked immediately as well as the LTE data.

I had the same problem as you with my MMS not working. I finally did a master reset back to factory and DO NOT restore from a previous build. Good luck.
MMS, no problem, VoLTE, Wifi Calling, another story...
I got MMS to work by simply adding the appropriate MMS APN, grabbed from the T-Mobile site.
IMS is another story though, they're not provisioning it for VoLTE and the rest, because they haven't done the testing yet. It would appear (hearsay from reading various forums) that this is a bit of showdown between MS and TMo, in terms of who's going to do the work.
In the meantime, all the standard stuff works, but it sure would be nice to have WiFi Calling, I spend a fair amount of my weekends in places with no coverage, but good WiFi.
Hopefully someone will decide it's best for the "customer" if these just work, since the firmware is already enabled, it's a bit annoying to be able to purchase the phone, with all the features advertised, but not being able to get a single carrier that supports them (at least in the US, I think there's 1-2 in EU).

Have you done any mods to phone?if not turn there shouldn't be any issue, is there something in particular your having an issue with? Also there's a newer software update from the one your running of1 is the latest stock system.
No no mods not even rooted and yes have issues with a warning about the time n date not updating automatically even though it is also one app(message+) can't send mms but I can with hangouts and the factory messaging app also sometimes I get a message about no sim detected after hanging up a call I'm using a verizon N3 on the t-mobile network if ur wondering
Your ob6 should be flashed to the new of1 it fixes certain things but more importantly fixes stagefright.

Is there any tutorials u kno about to update it I can follow tutorials n I can do root if needed I've done it plenty b4 with my other phones (htc g2, lg g2, gs3 and some tablets)
Also OTA updates don't work on phone it says system update it's temporarily unavailable probably cuz I'm not on the Verizon network
ok so I upgraded to OF1 but still same issue with app nothing yet on the other issues
Has phone always done it whole time using tmobile?was phone factory reset before switching to tmobile?are you using gsm mode or global?did you update phone using smart switch or vzw assistant?do you happen to have another sim card to try to make a call see if same error occurs?(I know sounds stupid)but I would use smart switch back phone up then reset (yes I know Noone wants to do that)then I would most likely root phone and freeze the not verizon sim error with titanium backup and try gsm mode then global mode see if anything makes a difference.i don't mean to hijack thread and ramble but I've seen so many stupid things cause issues when working with customers phone at my shop

Your problem is your using a Verizon phone on tmobil they use GSM while verizon uses cdma only sprint uses cdma also. Most of the world uses GSM. Most of the time when verizon note 3 users try to use roms from GSM carriers they get bugs where they can't get signal or text or mms.

I would try a newer sim also tmobile most t likely will give you one I have a punch fit cutting Sims and usually work but the old huge Sims are pretty dated in today's use. This phone shouldn't have a huge deal running gsm networks but like att let's say it usually favors edge or h+etc over lte but yes I have had lte on att with this phone before. After you set apns you should get decent speeds but unless you root you'll get that annoying sim not from Verizon error on top left corner I usually freeze that to get rid of it. The lte bands aren't all enabled on these they vary from Carrier to carrier but that's another story in other threads. I would possibly try another rom like I'm on which was setup for gsm use. Again that don't mean all the band's will perform like they should.

I was reaching the limits of my 32GB device so I bought what looked like a good one on Swappa. It's in very good condition and seems well cared for, and everything works fine. I've unlocked the bootloader and installed the same ROM (Pure Nexus) and versions as my 32GB unit had. The problem is that I often see H where my brother, who has the same phone, sees LTE. I often can't use the phone, where he can. It basically seems that the signal is worse on my new phone than the other ones. I've checked the baseband version and they are the same.
Does anyone have any ideas on why this might be? I am thinking of sending it in for support.
Thanks
Have you checked your apns? I would look and see if there are any missing or if something doesn't look right. If so manually key APN in and see if that resolves your issue.

You can usually find your apns on whatever carrier you have website just Google around shouldn't be too hard..

Is your latest phone a NA model or International? You didn't say but are you on the same carrier as your brother? Have you swapped SIM cards to rule that out?
Clone your brother's APN/ settings exactly. You can either edit an existing APN or start a new one.
Both of you run an app called LTE Discovery to find out which LTE band your brother's phone is on and what his signal strength is, at the same time you have different signal strength. Are you on the same LTE band with different signal strength? Are you on a different, weaker band? Why isn't your phone connecting to the same "stronger" band? Swap the SIM card, to see if the "good" LTE band follows the SIM or stays with his phone.
I haven't swapped out SIM cards and we are on the same carrier (T-Mobile). However, I didn't think it was necessary, because my prior phone, a 32GB N6P, performed perfectly and we always seemed to have the same signal more or less.
I have checked the APNs and they are set the same.
We installed LTE Discovery. Often I would not have LTE while he would have it. A few times when he had it and I didn't, I tried using LTE Discovery to restart the radio. Once, it switched to LTE but soon after that downgraded back to H.
Unfortunately you have no warranty if you bought the phone on Swappa. You can always try a factory reset and see if that helps. Maybe the previous owner did some software mods that are causing an issue. Are you on stock? Latest build and radio? Are you a Verizon customer or another carrier? Verizon has had their own builds in January and February partly because of radio issues. Are you using a case or screen protector? If so you might want to try using the phone naked to ensure nothing is interfering with the antenna. You could also contact your carrier and check if they see anything on their end. That helped me once when I was having signal issues. You should also be able to get a new sim from your carrier for free, which is worth a try.
The phone apparently has Nexus Protect in place, and maybe there is still factory warranty remaining? The phone came stock, but I've installed Pure Nexus/TWRP installed, exactly the same as my other phone. Latest radio. T-Mobile customer. Thanks

No, nothing new. I was going to switch to a different phone because it might just be something quirky with that one. No other ideas...sorry.

Note FE- is still good choice in 2019?

I have Note 5 and Note 9 and consider sell Note 5 and buy used Note FE for about 420$.
This decision is good in 2019? Maybe keep Note 5 because difference between Note 5 and FE isn't too big.
Thanks in advance.
I love my Note FE but here in the states it has never been reliable on LTE for voice calls or text messages. I run it on 3G/2G to get around that issue. There is a fix with S7 Edge files extracted from the ROM and flashed over to change the country specific code (csc) and enable VoLTE and WiFi calling, but that is no longer available with Pie.
Much love, but I would not buy one today.
All this is without root of course, but I've not been one to root phones the last couple of years.
Exact opposite for me. I use it on AT&T in United States and have no issues with 4g. Yes I am rooted.

Any chance you are using T-Mobile? I am using my Note FE with T-Mobile in the US and have the same problems. I am on Pie and currently rooted, but the issue existed before. I hope that the Note 10 is actually worth upgrading to

I really like this phone. I have an S7 Edge as a hot standby AND an original Pixel XL also just sitting there. This has the best form factor and I dont want to give it up.
As such I've been seriously considering rooting all week. I may pull the trigger to the same ROM you are running (I found the thread) tonight or sometime this weekend. If / once I get it done, I will 'report back' on network performance soon.

Technically I'm not on T-Mobile (I'm on SIMple Mobile) but it is "by T-Mobile" and uses their network. My friend has another Note 7 purchased at the same time in a different area of the country, and is on T-Mobile proper and has the same issues.
On Pie, I am using an app called "4g Fix" from the app store to switch to "WCDMA Preferred" and that solves the phone/text issue with LTE, by disabling LTE. :\
Going to try rooting and running "superfast9" https://forum.xda-developers.com/no...-superfast9-stable-note-7-fe-android-t3921332
Edit: On Oreo, I used to mitigate the issue by loading in the CSC file from my S7 Edge. I tried that on Pie but it doesnt work and won't enable VoLTE.
The best way I found was to Odin back Oreo, if Prenormal exist do the changing date trick in and to activate OEM unlock. Then intall TWRP..root..then flash rom.

Ty for the heads up on stupid PreNormal (so many times I waited a week until I learned about the date trick!) and advice, its much appreciated. I'm inspired and am running a full backup.
Hope you get everything up and running, if you need anything I will help as much as I can[emoji106]

I'm testing a customized version of Superfast9 with the TMO csc (osc, technically) from the S8 built in. So far I have VoLTE and WiFi calling and once I'm sure that "weird LTE telephony intermittent connectivity" truly isn't happening, and the original author has OK'd it, I will share it.
@butchieboy Totally, with VoLTE and WiFi Calling too.
I dont have wife calling..volte yes but no wifi calling. Tried to activate it with shortcut master but didnt work
