Tips for enjoying NO ROOT on S7E - Please post! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

So I'm new to the S7E. Only had it about a month. Luckily I didn't have to wait long for the official Android N 7.0 upgrade... Unfortunately there is no root available, which I'm not used to...all of my previous devices have always had full root with some pretty decent rom development. So a non-root device is new to me.
I'm guessing there may be others out there like myself who may have picked up a S7/S7E from people who were selling their older devices waiting for "the next big thing"... So like myself, those people are having to go thru this learning curve later in this devices life cycle. As an example, I didn't know the S7E & S7 (on tmobile g93#t) were not root able before buying this phone. And what root that was available for the MM, the guides were outdated and I never did it I decided to wait for nougat and see what happens. Anyway here we are!
I'd like to try and get some people to post some tips and suggestions for living and enjoying a no root phone especially when you're used to a rooted phone and all those goodies that come with customizing from root.
Samsung themes are ok, not amazing. Many are free and many are paid so you'll have to look around for one you like. The advantage to Samsung themes is it themes things like messages app (default), the notification pull down, the dialer, the lock screen clock. So it can give you a false sense of having a custom rom.
Surely there are more ways to customize these devices without root? Any suggestions?

I am rooted on my S7 edge. I am wishing I had Nougat but so far, am not willing to do without root.

I tried to deal with the root even after the fixes n all that but the random lag was annoying

I'm OK w/o root by using Adhell for ad blocking and EZ Package Disabler to disable the small bits of Tmobile bloat.

I purchased Package Disabler Pro but beyond disabling the T-mobile obvious, what else should I disable?
Is there a list or script I could use? 7.0 Nougat T-mobile variant (no root obviously).

How did you get to activate EZ disabler pro. Mine is stuck at activation with a message. Is there a workaround?

Mine too. I can't get it to activate license.

package disabler is a must! I really didn't like the root on the s7 edge, it was a lot of tweaking to get the lag to go away. The last rooted device I had was my note 7 which I miss still. IMO having a rooted snap dragon s7 edge isn't really all that great. Its just a poor experience and for me, the cons outweigh the pros. I'm pretty happy with nougat and package disabler tweaks. I do miss having root but in this case it blows as I previously stated.

Am I reading this correctly that you have the Nougat engineering kernel for both the S7 and the S7 Edge, and you're demanding money before you'll release it?

I cannot fully root my S7 due to security patch. I have SU app but it does not work. Can I just flash Nougat ROM using ODIN and remove security alert and custom notification on boot? Also, any idea when, if ever, ROOT will be available for PK1 or Nougat users? Thank you.

That's how I read it. Seems he has been a member since 2012 but with not much participation. Not sure how much is trust it to be a working 7.0 kernel though.

I jist found out about disconnect pro.. (just like adhell but better ) it blocks ads in browser like chrome and withing apps itself. This was the main reason why i would root (for adway) but this work perfect without having the annoying VPN key icon on top. With this and package pro i dont really need to root. Nougat is super smooth

I actually use both Disconnect and AdHell. I find that when I turn off AdHell while Disconnect is still active I see certain ad's here and there (maybe I'm crazy? I dunno). I don't see a way to update the blacklisted stuff in either app? I guess they do their thing in the background as far as updating goes? I dunno.
I tried AdClear but the battery hit was massive (about 30%) pretty high... The adclear guys claim they've improved it but since I found Disconnect and Adhell I'm good.
Nothing work's as good as AdAway did for me- but obviously no root so that's not going to work.
The last versions of package disabler pro do work on Nougat, I've disabled a bunch of stuff (like 90 items?) but then I notice the samsung cloud stuff doesn't sync so no samsung backups... I just left everything enabled, I don't see a noticeable performance difference, I do see a little more battery drain with everything enabled though... I never took the time to figure out which service I disabled that stopped the samsung cloud sync, so I figured just leave 'em all active.
As for the guy wanting donations for the ENG kernel for Nougat, I call 100% Bull Shirt! (anybody watch the good place? LOL)... That post is enough to get you BANNED imo. People here HELP each other, we don't charge for that help. ** IF the ENG kernel exists for 7.0, it'll surface WITHOUT your help. **

It's all a joke. JusMEJOSE claimed the same thing on the Note 7 forums when the Note 7 came out. Everyone was excited to think it would have root right away and when everyone asked him to release it, he disappeared. People tried to contact him for weeks and he acted like a prick and would not even answer their messages. With that kind of record, Good luck. Only a demented person would believe that if he had it, he would release it. He lies and expects people to not remember? I think he does it for the attention. My memory is pretty good and I remember deceiving people very well. How about releasing it and then asking those who benefited to donate instead? That's what a decent person would do.

Yeah, I figured you really had it, since you were the one that released the engboot for MM + the modified Odin to flash it. I'm just questioning why you claim to need money to release it in a community-supported forum.

Firmware update for Note 4 due this week

I'm working with Gear VR and had reason to ask the right questions to my contact at Samsung and here's what he had to say today about a firmware update that I need for development (but everyone will get), "I'm hearing the Verizon update is supposed to be available in the next few days or so"
Just thought I'd share since it's rare we have reliable, official announcement before the OTA's flow. To be clear, I don't know if this update will be Android L. I DO know that it will have the bits needed to support Gear VR on retail devices.
He's also working on getting me the ROM sooner, but I'm not sure if I will be allowed to distribute. Maybe others will be getting it early for the same reasons though so if you want a decent reason to hope....

Thanks. I hate updates like that. I hope that whatever we get from Verizon is different but I have a funny feeling we will be getting a useless update as well.

Guy in the droid life site commented that after the update on his AT&T note 4 update, the recents button was faster and more responsive. I hope it's really true and us Verizon users see the same improvement. That lag is the biggest gripe I have with this phone right now. Yeah, it's that good of a phone!

We WILL get Gear VR support ( the whole point of this thread). Beyond that, I can't say and don't care much. If I was fixed on root or L, I wouldn't be running the Note 4 given how good Samsung is getting at locking the boot loader. In fact, If not for my VR development, I might have purchased my first Nexus device despite the lack of SD (or grabbed the G3).
By the way, why are people still spamming with "sent from my weAlreadyKnowAndDontCare using irrelevantAndAnnoyingApp"? That's so Outlook 2000

This is the first Android phone for me where I am not terribly concerned if I don't get an unlocked bootloader. Root would be nice but it's not a deal breaker for me. I am looking forward to Android L on this phone.
As for my Tapatalk signature, I rarely post in forums so I forgot the signature was even there! I more or less read forums these days.

FM Radio in the Note 4

T-mobile is locking down the FM radio tuner in our Note 4.
It is built in to all models but the carriers choose to restrict the chip. It's very popular in other countries and they refuse to explain why they won't let consumers access the feature and pretend like it doesn't exist for our phones.
The Sprint version can use the Nextradio App to use the FM tuner because Sprint has a deal with the app makers for an ad revenue cut.
T-mobile pretends to be the UNcarrier and I switched to them from Verizon for that reason but it seems that they're just as bad as Verizon with painfully slow updates and locked down features.
There is already a campaign to contact the carriers and convince them to unlock the feature http://freeradioonmyphone.org/.
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of thing? I would threaten to switch to Sprint but that's an empty threat because everyone knows their service is hot garbage.
Would be great if there was a softmod solution for root users but I don't think this is possible....
I would also like to see this feature active on my n4.

I tweeted
@JohnLegere @Tmobile John why can't we have FM radio. Tmobile claims Music Freedom but Sprint wins this round.
Maybe everyone who wants this feature should do the same.
Although it sounds like a great idea, I'm wondering if they would have to resubmit for FCC certification to enable it. If that's the case, it's NOT going to happen.
I dont think radio is locked, it probably doesn't exist in Tmo Note 4. Sprint version most likely using different modem which has fm capability.
Sent from my SM-N910T using XDA Free mobile app
Will be awesome especially for those international trips
I have no idea if maybe the Tmobile, AT&T, and Verizon versions don't have it but I really don't think this is the case although it is possible that it is physically disabled.
As far as FCC re-certification I wouldn't be surprised if the FCC was willing to give a pass...

I miss this feature that once graced my old HTC devices.
If you are truly unhappy with T-Mobile then switch. No one is stopping you. The whole thing about updates being slow is taken out of context because, for one, you act as if everyone has Lollipop already which is untrue. And two, I can count many other times where T-Mobile was in fact first to the punch and some times where they actually skipped an update because a newer one quickly came out. Going from 4.4.2 to 4.4.4 and skipping 4.4.3 for example. Do not completely discredit the carrier because of one minor misstep or because some feature we really don't know why isn't on our phones. There's plenty of online radio apps out there and iheart radio has many local stations.

People in poor signal areas might not be able to use iheart. For example my coverage in my local park is bad, or was last year anyway, waiting for nice weather to go back, and if I enjoyed FM radio then having the ability to use my phone to do so would be nice without having to hope I have a data signal.

If loading your phone up with some MP3s somehow isn't good enough then for less than $10, and in some cases $5, you can get a portable FM radio that is smaller than your phone if you absolutely feel you need it.

I'm not about to give kudos to a carrier for updating a phone. Especially not a phone that hasn't even been out a year. Add to the fact that Samsung does all the heavy lifting as far as developing their updates. I will fault a carrier for disabling features built into my phone for the sole purpose of pushing some other agenda. Knowing the reason is moot if the reason has nothing to do with lowering the quality of the product.

I guess my question is why does someone need to justify to anyone why they would want this feature? Further more an MP3 isn't exactly a replacement for news and talk shows.
IF it's built into the phone its kind of shady to disable it.

Again, no one knows why exactly it is not on our phones and that Sprint is the only one. Furthermore it is NOT a feature that is on be default, it must be 'Activated'... Until recently no one even knew that the phone had it. Also, most news and talk shows are on AM radio.
Yay the "there is no view but mine" part of XDA has come out...*clap clap clap*
I don't care one way or the other about the FM radio, I just think you demanding people do things your way as it must be the "right" way is arrogant.

I'm not demanding anything. I'm simply stating that there is an alternative... And the fact that this alternative is so cheap and simple begs the question why it's even an issue at all. If not activating an FM radio in your phone is enough to make you consider another carrier then why get that phone in the first place knowing that it wasn't there to begin with? You guys are basically complaining simply because you can and the fact that I can bother you so much by solving your issue with a simple answer proves how dumbfounded the issue really is.
My question still stands why should anyone have to justify their preference to want to use the FM feature on the phone if it has it? I see this right in line with disabling different NFC payment options, or how Apple wouldn't allow the Kindle app to purchase books just to make it more difficult and thus push users to their ecosystem.
I pay for my device. It will be paid in full in two months, its mine. Whether or not I will use a portion of it should be no concern of T-Mobile. I don't use the UV sensor, it's still there.
Saying T-Mobile is just as bad as Verizon with slow updates and locked down services is just crazy. When's the last time you bought a non Nexus device on Verizon that had an unlocked bootloader? Now when's the last time you bought a device on T-Mobile that had a locked bootloader? Don't think I really need to say much more.
This is the main reason why people buy the international version, these US carriers always disable stuff on their phones, Sprint AT&T Verizon all disable download Booster from their note 4 and s5 I didn't get an international version of this phone but I definitely see why somebody would
Fact: The Note 4 HAS an FM radio reciever. http://shop.sprint.com/mysprint/shop/phone_details.jsp?ensembleId=SPHG900BKS&flow=AAL&isDeeplinked=true&INTNAV=GalaxyS5LP:ShopNow:041114
Fact: T-mobile has chosen not to activate the software to communicate with the FM chipset.
Fact: International Models do not have it activated either. Meaning Samsung does NOT, by default, use the software.
Hope: The Lollipop update that is finally now in T-Mobile's hands might have it.
Hope: If Not, maybe it will be possible in AOSP roms i.e. CyanogenMod.

[Sad News ?] Galaxy S7 , take a look before you buy !

So yeah no developpement...It's confirmed , the S820 variant is locked down by samsung , yes you read it well. You may never get AOSP on your S7..

You're a little late to the party. There's a thread in pretty much every section for both S7 & S7E discussing this topic right now. All Snapdragon 820 versions on all US carriers including T-Mobile have a locked bootloader. Only the Exynos versions have an unlocked bootloader and can be rooted.

It's really not that shocking. The two largest US carriers (Verizon & AT&T) have been locking bootloaders for a long time. This year, Samsung went with a single FCC id consolidating all four carrier devices into one. The two smaller companies (T-Mobile & Sprint) just got sucked into the vortex. It's probably better for them anyway, since it will mean fewer warranty claims and fewer noobs clogging up their phone lines asking why they can't get OTAs after rooting. 99% of their customers could care less.

Yes i may agree with you. I now understand why most of devs are getting Nexus devices.
But to be honest if i had a GS7 i wouldnt think to root it or flash a ROM , i ordered a sammy phone and i already planned to keep it full stock because new TW is great imo. But for those that were looking for roms tweaks..etc well..
Sent from my S5 on steroids.
lmfao anyone who bought an s7 thinking there would be root makes me laugh. my note 4 from 2014 STILL doesn't have any sort of permroot. i didn't buy this phone looking for root. if i ever need something rooted, i'll use my G2.

Uninstalling apps in the system partition doesn't free up any useful space. The system partition is a fixed size, and it's not accessible to the user in any way. There is literally no benefit to uninstalling over disabling.

Except deleting them doesn't free up any use useable space anyway. You can't use the system partition for user apps.
So practically exactly the same.

Sunshine Bootloader Unlock for SU4TL-49 is live!

https://twitter.com/firewaterdevs
I'd like to take this opportunity to apologize to everyone I told that there was no hope for unlocking SU4TL-49. The sun gods have heard your plea. I'll update my guide as soon as it goes live.
EDIT: It's live. You officially have no excuse to have a locked quark

It took Sunshine team a FULL year to find the first Droid Turbo bootloader unlock exploit... and they were actively looking. After that (November 2015), they said they were no longer actively looking.
So, this is a surprise. 9-10 months to find the 2nd exploit.
That's some great news
Added great news:
Once Sunshine pushes this new update, Verizon will be motivated to push one more "security" update for the Droid Turbo. I mean, they can't be bothered to update to Marshmallow, but for this, you'll get a new update...
People will still procrastinate and complain it should be free.
And they'll rush to take the next Verizon OTA "security" update.

No. You need something like Adaway, which Google banned from the Play store. You can still get it on XDA, however.
It uses a blacklist of host files at the system level, as well as enabling a fake web server on your phone to direct ad requests to a non-existent location. Apps see the ad requests being filled (but no ads appear) and still work.
EDIT: didn't know about this AdGuard below. It has a root and a non-root method.

I use adguard on SU4TL-49, and it blocks just about every ad except the ads in the YouTube app.

Well, you still need root -- unless you plan to run through their VPN mode. I do commend them for offering a non-root method, if that's what people want. I had never heard of this app/service, whatever it is. But then I will never own a phone I can't root. Rooting is just becoming "administrator". It's MY phone.
— Adguard is able to block ALL kinds of ads, not only in browsers but also in games and apps!
How does Adguard protection work?
Adguard filters your browser’s traffic by blocking requests to phishing and malicious websites and removing intrusive browser advertising.
Adguard can use two modes of traffic filtering.
— Local VPN mode.
— Local HTTP proxy mode.
Local VPN mode
If you are using this mode, Adguard does not need ROOT privileges to carry out filtering. At the same time, a VPN-server is located on your device, so that there is no need to pass your traffic through a remote server in order to filter it.
Local HTTP proxy mode
In this mode Adguard launches a local HTTP proxy server on your device. This mode is recommended, if you use a rooted device.
Otherwise, manual adjustment of an HTTP proxy will be needed to use this mode, the filtering in mobile networks (Edge/3G/4G) will also be impossible.

Well ... I guess I can. I'm trying it out. Still I do love the freedom to d**k around with my roms. Also when I got the new phone, it was a super pain in my butt to do a full restore of the backup I made on the rooted phone. So there's that.
Anyway, I'd probably still pay for BL unlock even with adguard working.
Also gotta remember to whitelist mms.vtext.com just like with the other blockers.
Holy crap this is some great news! I thought I was doomed to the pits of hell when I woke up one morning to see that my phone had been updated before I got a chance to unlock the bootloader.

Hey guys, new to the Turbo section as I've been rocking the Nexus 6 the past couple years.
I've wanted a Turbo since release, but the locked bootloader was a dealbreaker, and the unlockable xt1225 and/or xt1250 have been ridiculously overpriced (said the guy who paid almost $700 for Nexus 6 lol smh).
Thinking about picking up a Turbo now, and as it will most likely have SU4TL-49 preinstalled, I want to make absolutely sure I'll be able to unlock it.
Just wondering if anyone knows what the ETA is for the SU4TL-49 Sunshine update?

It's part of the LS997 ROM released by Team DevDigitel. I should be able to get an APK for you but it's probably just as easy to extract it from the ROM. With LG stock apk's YMMV.
Sent from my LG-LS997 using XDA Labs
I know this apk works since I just pulled it from a ROM that has it included and it was working with the ROM. There must be some sort of dependency that is keeping it from running. I'm going to see if I can do some reverse engineering on it to find out what that dependency is. If anyone can save me a step, I'd be happy to hear what that dependency is!
Did you ever figure this out because I would like to do this myself. Also, you mentioned you had the stock messaging app working. Would you mind sharing the apk and any special instructions not covered by this post: https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/themes/stock-music-app-to-att-version-t3552963
Also, please share the calendar apk as well even though it hasn't worked for you. Maybe I'll have better luck.

Just saw this--I posted links to all of the working LG apps for LS997 unrooted phones somewhere. Once I find them, I'll link to it here.

UPDATE 2: I couldn't get the Messaging app to work this time. Not sure if it has anything to do with updating from ZV5 to ZV6...or maybe just that I'm no longer rooted?

You're not on Sprint (lucky you). For some dumb reason, hardly any of the STOCK LG APPS work on an LG PHONE. Makes perfect sense. I understand the desire for the carrier to make the phone "theirs" or to try to go with a more "vanilla Google" experience, but if I want to install LG apps on an LG phone, that should not be more difficult than rocket surgery.
My turn to rant >>> Unfortunately Sprint has the best coverage where I live and their prices are much better than Verizon's. Next time I'll just get an unlocked device. I would love to just root the phone in order to run stock apps, as I had before, but everytime I do there seems to be a malfunction and my phone ends up bricked (not from installing incompatible ROMs or kernels, I think I just flash the phone too many times?). Not to mention Sprint (and AT&T) has conveniently decided to not make the KDZ/TOT files available to the public. Let's not even mention the ridiculous static boot screen...

Someone in another thread suggested it might be a missing framework. I don't know enough about mobile development to be able to say that he was on the right path or not, but it seems logical to me. It's probably something buried deep in the system that would only be accessible by having root permissions.
I do wonder about the ability to achieve this through a terminal app and changing some permissions as the SystemUI Tuner app does in order to change status bar icons without root. Wish someone would work on that, or I wish I had enough knowledge to do so myself... oh well.

Serious question: how does the method used by SystemUI Tuner work without root, and why wouldn't this method work for non-rooted phones and stock apps? If you're not familiar, the app requires non-rooted phones to use ADB to send a shell command 'pm grant com.xxx.xxx android.permission.WRITE_SECURE_SETTINGS' and 'android.permission.DUMP'. Perhaps there is code in the app itself to trick the system into thinking it has root using these commands?? You would know better than me...
I'm waving the white flag on this, however I am curious to know how that works. I might consider another carrier in the future however. Preferrably one that doesn't cripple stock apps.
