Firmware update for Note 4 due this week - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

I'm working with Gear VR and had reason to ask the right questions to my contact at Samsung and here's what he had to say today about a firmware update that I need for development (but everyone will get), "I'm hearing the Verizon update is supposed to be available in the next few days or so"
Just thought I'd share since it's rare we have reliable, official announcement before the OTA's flow. To be clear, I don't know if this update will be Android L. I DO know that it will have the bits needed to support Gear VR on retail devices.
He's also working on getting me the ROM sooner, but I'm not sure if I will be allowed to distribute. Maybe others will be getting it early for the same reasons though so if you want a decent reason to hope....

AT&T note 4 got an OTA update today...

What did the AT&T update consist of? Minor stuff or Android L?
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk

If I'm not mistaken, HD voice something and bloatware.

Thanks. I hate updates like that. I hope that whatever we get from Verizon is different but I have a funny feeling we will be getting a useless update as well.

Guy in the droid life site commented that after the update on his AT&T note 4 update, the recents button was faster and more responsive. I hope it's really true and us Verizon users see the same improvement. That lag is the biggest gripe I have with this phone right now. Yeah, it's that good of a phone!

Only lag I have is the recent apps cap. Takes a second or two sometimes to load up my list of recent apps. Not sure if this is related with ART though. Any thoughts?

We WILL get Gear VR support ( the whole point of this thread). Beyond that, I can't say and don't care much. If I was fixed on root or L, I wouldn't be running the Note 4 given how good Samsung is getting at locking the boot loader. In fact, If not for my VR development, I might have purchased my first Nexus device despite the lack of SD (or grabbed the G3).
By the way, why are people still spamming with "sent from my weAlreadyKnowAndDontCare using irrelevantAndAnnoyingApp"? That's so Outlook 2000

This is the first Android phone for me where I am not terribly concerned if I don't get an unlocked bootloader. Root would be nice but it's not a deal breaker for me. I am looking forward to Android L on this phone.
As for my Tapatalk signature, I rarely post in forums so I forgot the signature was even there! I more or less read forums these days.
Thanks for posting the information!

Is this OTA really worth taking seeing as we seem not to be close to attaining root?

Yeah, that's what I thought. It's an update to address an lawsuit Apple brought against Samsung for unified search. Google removed on device search results, probably until a better solution is found. Really disappointing. I'm not updating for sure.

Updated the title to include that the universal search feature had been removed with OTA.
Surely this is a class-action in the making? People purchase product with a specific feature set, feature is later removed. Now, it might be cheaper than fighting with Apple, or might be enforced by the courts, but it doesn't change the fact that something you paid for has been taken away.

Samsung's/ATT's getting ahead of the curve here or something?
OK,
Rooted, protected with OTA Rootkeeper, and flashed stock recovery. Got the update installed and OTA Rootkeeper restored root. Happyface.

I just got off of live chat with tech support. I had a good tech. He copied and pasted the OTA information he had internally.
Went something like this:
"Reason: Google Search Update"
And then the base band, how to tell customers how to perform the update, etc
Its a 10mb file.
So, pretty much it down grades the search function of Google Search.
Awesome...
I just rooted the phone after the OTA, have CWM and SU

nexus 7 with ics and no apps

Okay so I've tried searching all over the place for this but can't find anyone with the same trouble I'm having.
The problem is my nexus 7 has basically everything missing, every google app isn't there, play store, gmail, you tube etc. all missing.
There was no sign up process when i booted up, and it's running ics version 4.0.3. Instead of jelly bean.
The only thing i can do is browse Web pages.
There also a tab in settings called developer options.
Any ideas? I'm wondering if i got a developer version by mistake?
i'm basically missing everything and can't do much at all with it.
Thanks, Matt
Strange maybe they sent you a test device on accident. I'd just flash the stock software that Google released.

They might have shipped a pre-production model by mistake, or something similar.
If you're used to rooting Android, you can grab the stock images here: http://goo.gl/p0W2s. Otherwise, just bring it to wherever you bought it and get a replacement.
There are factory images for the device available from Google that can return you to a shipping Jelly Bean build. See here:
https://developers.google.com/android/nexus/images
It's a fairly simple process, but it does require some basic setup on your desktop computer. You'll need the ability to use fastboot. If you're not up for that the easiest thing to do would be to just exchange the unit.
Edit - identical advice as above. Great minds think alike
Thanks for the replies, I'll have to try and flash the firmware when I get home tomorrow.
I'll let you know if I bork it up
Wonder if there's any hardware difference between this and the retail versions, could be worth something.

Really just return it. That's the strangest screw-up I've seen in a while. Unless time is a factor, exchange it. There may be issues with the hardware in a test device, so I would just play it safe (even though fastboot is super easy and fast). And, I'm guessing this is your first Android device, so please don't let this ruin your experience.

Are all Nexus 7s model number "me370t"? If not, then you have the MeMO 370T firmware, which was the base for Nexus 7.
Sell it and buy a new one lol
The developer options is nothing special... Thats been there since ICS. It's supposed to be there.
But I've seen a few other reports around here that also have that Asus firmware loaded on them. Not sure if they were able to get the stock loaded onto it, or if they swapped out for another one.
Let me guess, you had a pretty tree set as your background image on first boot up?
This kinda sucks for you but I think its really cool at the same time haha. Its cool how it says me370t for the model since the n7 is basically the same device minus a stylus built in

I agree, you should (must) dump the ROM and put it up for devs to look at. It's a shame you had your nexus experience marred by thus, but our devs can surely find some interesting things in the ICS build(ironically, this us how the touchpad got android, someone got one that shipped with GB, and the community was lucky enough to get to him before he wiped it).

s6 stagefright!

Hi guys,
I was watching carefully for an update to patch this vulnerability, so I updated my phone to the latest firmware.
Unfortunately, our devices are still vulnerable!
I would understand it if the phone is old and not supported anymore, but come on Samsung, this phone is very new and you're advertising Samsung payment system on it, so the last that I'd expect from you is to patch obvious vulnerability! [emoji15]
I followed some of YouTube guides on how to protect myself.

Sp the vulnerability is from MMS connection from what I understand correct? Well then disable it and then your good to go. I am completely not worried by this bug. Its not like they can send you any message and your phone reboots.
Anyways there isnt much to concern your self with. This is an exploit only a handful understand and they are showing it off to collect money from Google and others but not us.
You're right, it affects MMS, but more than that, your device will be infected(if note patched) by simply playing media from any source, all what you need is a video with infected code injected.
So it's a major issue, affecting around a billion device!
Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
Is this really a "major issue" just because around a billion devices are potentially exposed? How many known cases of the stagefright vulnerability being exploited are you aware of? Even the researcher who found the vulnerability is unaware of any cases of anyone trying to exploit it.
Don't be a victim of clickbait sensationalism.
BTW, if this is keeping you awake at night, here is something to read while you wait for the sun to rise:
Worried about Stagefright? Here’s what you can do for now | Android Authority
I probably haven't explained the situation, as I assumed that everyone knows the details.
it is not an mms problem, all types if media from different sources are potential carriers, this includes websites and urls
There is no obvious way to tell that you're infected for now, hence no way to tell how many devices are affected!
As u rightly said, not opening mms is a good practice, but don't forget that android auto executes mms so it is ready t for you to view, so this means that your device will executes the malicious code even before you unlock it
This matter is so big for Google to issue patches with in days after the developer revealed the code.
There are some temporary fixes for now.

It's really not that shocking. The two largest US carriers (Verizon & AT&T) have been locking bootloaders for a long time. This year, Samsung went with a single FCC id consolidating all four carrier devices into one. The two smaller companies (T-Mobile & Sprint) just got sucked into the vortex. It's probably better for them anyway, since it will mean fewer warranty claims and fewer noobs clogging up their phone lines asking why they can't get OTAs after rooting. 99% of their customers could care less.

Yes i may agree with you. I now understand why most of devs are getting Nexus devices.
But to be honest if i had a GS7 i wouldnt think to root it or flash a ROM , i ordered a sammy phone and i already planned to keep it full stock because new TW is great imo. But for those that were looking for roms tweaks..etc well..

lmfao anyone who bought an s7 thinking there would be root makes me laugh. my note 4 from 2014 STILL doesn't have any sort of permroot. i didn't buy this phone looking for root. if i ever need something rooted, i'll use my G2.

haha G2 was a damn good phone. funny thing is, i went from G2 to Note 4, then to Moto X so i've had two big phones lately..went back to s7 size, which is tiny in comparison, but i also got a spigen feather slim fit case, which is identical to the incipio feather i used the most with my g2....so now, my s7 reminds me of the g2 so much haha

Package Debloater Pro
Package Disabler Pro
Works well to hide all the apps you dont like. Not really any different from uninstalling after root.

it's a bit different in that this freezes apps like titanium, instead of uninstalling and freeing up some space.

Uninstalling apps in the system partition doesn't free up any useful space. The system partition is a fixed size, and it's not accessible to the user in any way. There is literally no benefit to uninstalling over disabling.

Except deleting them doesn't free up any use useable space anyway. You can't use the system partition for user apps.
So practically exactly the same.

Has anyone gotten Google Assistant yet?

I know Google said that they were releasing Google Assistant to every phone running marshmallow and nougat.
Has anyone gotten the update or know a way to speed the process up?
I am running the unreleased nougat.
Thanks

Google announced Assistant will be coming to devices with an update to the play services. It's rolling out.
I myself haven't switched from the nonoffical nouget because it's a hassle to wipe and start over.
I haven't got the update on yet either.

I just haven't because temp root is trash. Only reason to root perm root and twrp custom rims also. Aosp on s7 would make it a lot cleaner faster more battery efficient but we will never get that on ANY FUTURE AT&T SAMSUNG DEVICES. Just switch of SAMSUNG device permanently or full unlocked noncarrier phones. Or switch carrier. That's what I plan on
Doing. Also all SAMSUNG s7s on a?AT&T only have 32 gb models which is BS because there are 128 4th models and android bought OS uses 9.9 GB leaving 20 for apps and photos. What they think applications are going to run through the cloud like nextbit robbin only phone that does it doubtful. So you can have barely any apps on all FUTURE Sammy devices. On art so I just switch of SAMSUNG. AT&T SAMDUNG devices are crap. Wish I still had my galaxy note 4 was way better and had root perm and rims last Sammy at&t device with it I bet.
Edit : lol typos from typing on cell carelessly led to an autocorrect of SAMDUNG
still no GA here. I have the t mobile variant on official N. I did receive a google app update on 3rd but it didn't have GA. some people appear to be getting and I have no idea how. An .APK dump with GA on it would awesome
It's under beta in the settings menu of Google play on Android 7 with and s7 edge... I got it there...Open Goole play then slide open your settings menu for Google play and under my games and apps it's under beta.... Or you may have to enable beta in the settings then search.. it's there! Make sure your play store version is the latest version and you should have a beta tab with Google under it which is the assistant....
I literally just got it a few minutes ago on my at&t edge
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SM-G935A using Tapatalk
So I have both the beta and everything appears updated but it is not showing up. The only issue i have ran into is that the services where downloaded under two accounts on my phone.
Signed up to be a beta for both Google Play Services and the Google app early yesterday afternoon. Woke up to GA on my phone this morning. Not sure if it helped, but thought I'd mention it just in case.
Mid-Missouri region.
I got on two of my S7E. T-mobile and AT&T
Did anybody make to work from any screen? Mine are not working, i need to unlock my phones.
