Any Way to Get This HD8 Working Again - Fire HD 8 and HD 10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My wife bought an HD8 (16gb) as a gift in Nov 16. The recipient gave it back the other day, saying it doesn't work. The screen will only boot to what can be described as a bunch of colored lines covering the entire screen. There is no evidence of screen damage or case damage. It looks to be used very little. I called Amazon and they credited me the price of this one, sold me a new 32gb HD8, and said keep this one. Is there anything that I can try to get this working again and rooted? Have tried hard resets (e.g. POWER button > 40 sec, POWER + VOL. + > 40 sec, and POWER + VOL. - > 40 sec) but nothing gets me past the above screen.

From what you are saying and what you tried, you're probably skrewd.
Do you see a Fire, Portable, or MTP device appear on your PC when you connect the USB port to your PC?
If you can tell if the tablet is "Off", try pressing "Vol -" (the left side) & "Power" at the same time for about 5 seconds. If you then press the "Vol -" button once and then the "Power" button, it will put you into ADB sideload Mode ... see if you get an ADB device recognized on your PC from that.
If that works, you can try doing an "adb sideload xxx.bin" using the latest HD8 binary. (You should use the latest, since that has the lowest chance of bricking your tablet)
Best of luck!

Qtek 9100 will not turn on

The battery came out will the device was connected to the computer via usb. Don't ask how I was messing about, the back came off and then the battery fell out. Now I can't turn it on. When I plug into the mains adaptor the charge light does come on. Any ideas.
Thanks
try to set the device in BOOTMANAGER mode and see if you at least can access that part of the phone!
What did you do when the battery 'came off'? Flashing it?
If you did not flash it press and hold the power button and remove the battery. Keep pressing the power button for an additional 15 to 30 sec after you removed the battery.
Leave the phone without the battery for half an hour or so, then press and hold Power for 30 sec. While still holding the power button place the battery back in, release power, wait 10 sec and try to turn it on ...
Thanks very much for your reply. I had just flashed it. It had rebooted and hung on the splash screen. I then picked up the phone and accidently knocked the battery out. Do you think this makes a difference to your suggestion?
Tried your technique but nothing unfortunately. It may be dead!
Thanks anyway.
Maybe my phone is dead too
I did the same with my phone...just did a flash and rebooted and now freeze on the splash screen...what can i do to save my phone?
If you're phone still turns on and just hangs at the splash screen as far as I understand you can then hold down the camera button and press the soft reset key. This should take you into the bootloader. From there you can re-flash the device with a different ROM like 'Wizard Love' (you can find it on this site somewhere, use search) or download the latest ROM from your provider. Use a NO_ID flash utility which means you don't have to have Activesync 'active'. My problem is slightly different as my device won't turn on at all. I've just bought a replacement battery just incase thats the problem. Otherwise I guess its gone for good.
If the flash finished successfully you can try first:
HOLD CON KEY (left side of the phone) + VOICE DIAL KEY (right side of the phone) + RESET. This will HARD RESET your device and re-initialize the ROM - might be that that can fix it! If not try to reflash it with the shipped ROM
BOOTLOADER MODE:
Power button + Camera button + Reset.

[Q] Oh no Bricked!

I tried to update my firmware last night using odin (I've used it several times for my Galaxy S) and it failed, the error message was something along the lines of "write operation failed"
after waiting 25mins to see if my tab would reboot it didn't so I held down the power button to restart it and it switched off and now it won't switch on again ....
I've tried plugging it into all my usb slots, charging through the wall charger and tried using android commander but nothing makes the screen pop up with that little image of a computer and phone.
I can't even get into download mode, and odin doesn't pick it up. I think it's bricked for good,
I had a issue with the USB cable and had to get it replaced by samsung, now my ELF (Early-Life Failure) is up so I don't know what to do.....
Any Suggestions?
It's ok buddy its not bricked just plug in to the usb on the pc with odin3 on and leave at for a wile and it will come right back up.
Sent from my GT-P1000 using XDA App
I left it plugged in for about 10/15 mins and nothing happened after that I tired to to the whole power+volume down+home button to turn it off and back on, didn't work and just tried to ADB it and the device isn't found.
So I think its a costly paperweight atm
Ok well plug it in to the wall outlet and leave it for a few hours. I had tbe same prom you had and thats what work for me.

lol I liked my paperweight too much Ok I'll leave charged at home while I go to work for 7 hours, Thanks for your help bulldebeerman, Hopefully this fixes the ubertab (yes I nicknamed this paperweight!)
Ok so It's still bricked.... I forgot to mention the buttons don't work eg. I push and hold the power button and it does nothing. I charged it for the day so it should be 100% battery and now odin isn't finding it still. Also I didn't have USB debbuging enabled :/
Now I will admit I don't have a Tab(til next month) but wouldn't you un brick it the same way you do a Samsung Vibrant?
(Am not trying to be smart, just trying to find out everything I can before I buy it)...And on that note is there a 32GB version out?

Have you tried dropping the phone into Recovery Mode?
There is some confusion on what buttons to press where some say to press and hold the Volume Up AND Power Buttons simultaneously, whereas others mention pressing the above AND the Back Button.
If you can get into Recovery Mode you may be able to restart the phone.
If not and Revery Mode works try dropping the phone into Download Mode which is the same for RM but you press the Volume Down instead of Up.
With DM you will then be able to use third party software (Odin & a suitable ROM image from samfirmware'com) to bring the phone back up and running.
Yep tried all that tried
Power + Volume Up
Power + Volume Down
Power + Volume Up + Down
Power + Volume Down + Home
Power + Volume Domn + Up + Home
so um.... nothing makes the phone start

You mentioned Home button but not the Back Button.
I take it that does not work either?
Sorry forgot to menton that ... tried all possible combos for that too .... and adb won't detect the tab which kinda really make me think its brick for good :/
Its not bricked.
Power it off, and power it back on holding the vol down button and the power button.
When you see the computer---!---phone icon, release the keys, and connect it to a pc with an open odin. It will get recognized ( even though you dont get the download mode, you are in it ).
After that, flash whatever you need.
Try that and let me know.

[Q] i need help - bricked nook

Hi guys.
The other day I side-loaded some epubs for Grad Trip.
I went and in the middle of the trip I was going for my Nook, open the case and just see the half of the screen WIPED OUT:crying::crying::crying::crying:
I had no idea what was happening, i tried plugging it into my Mac, didn't work.
Researched like crazy for half an hour but found nothing.
So here I am to ask you guys for help..
My Mac won't even recognized my Nook Touch, and I'm FREAKING OUT
I'm guessing it's probably because of the .DS_Store and .Trashes folders...
What should I do?
Here's my MacBook Pro Specs:
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro
Intel Core i7, 15 inch, 2.66 Ghz
PLZ REPLY AND HELP ME!
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MY NOOK! (PANIC)
sorry... I tried to post an image but it didn't let me, i think the bottom would work... it's REALLY SERIOUS so please help!! (the ex) part is just there)
ex) goo.gl/SdBXZ
As annoying as the Apple tendency is to graffiti everything it can get its hands on with .DS_Store and .Trashes, I don't think that that is the problem.
Are you saying that the bottom half of the display doesn't change but the top half is fine and responds?
Can you do a normal full power and then reboot? Is it still the same?
I'd then suspect a hardware problem with the screen.
I don't know why you can't connect on USB.
That could be related or a red herring.
I'd probably try to do a factory restore and then get an in-warranty replacement.

The following procedure details the process to Hard Reset your All-New NOOK. This process will deregister your device as well as erase all local content such as contacts, sideloaded documents, personal information, wishlists, 4 digit passcodes, etc. It is recommended you back up all wanted files to an SD card or computer. All Barnes & Noble content will be downloadable upon re-registering
1. Power off your NOOK by pressing and holding down the power button. When the “Do you want to power your device completely off” message appears, tap “Power Off.”
2. Once your NOOK has powered off, set it down on a clean level surface. Make sure that your NOOK's screen is facing up with the top of the device facing towards you.
3. Set your NOOK at the edge of the surface so you can access the power button.
4. Press and hold the Power button to power on your NOOK. When your device starts to power on, quickly let go of the power button then immediately press and hold the power button and both the bottom right and the bottom left page turn buttons together.
5. Continue to hold all 3 buttons for 5 seconds.
6. After 5 seconds, release the Power button; then release the side buttons.
7. Your device will show the ‘Read Forever’ screen then will present the Factory Reset dialog asking if you would like to perform a “Factory Reset,” Tap the "NOOK Home key" to confirm. Tap the "Home key" again to begin the process.

Stock Mi A1 locked on Fastboot screen

Ok, here's as much info as I can give as my phone is locked up:
Stock Mi A1 with 1st Oreo update: December patch level
I have not tried to load anything custom on it, nor have I even loaded the apps to do so.
I took my phone out of my pocket and it is locked on on a screen that says Fastboot.
Power button does not work. Long press power button does not work. Power+UP volume button does not work. Power+UP+DOWN volume buttons do not work.
Plugging the phone into the computer via USB port does nothing.
The battery is non-removable, so I can't pull it to reset.
I am at a complete loss as to what happened, why it happened, and how to resolve it. The phone was working fine this morning. I took it out of my pocket to use it and then discovered the issue. I live in Thailand, and there are no local service centers for Xiaomi, so hopefully someone will have an idea of how to fix the issue.
Any help, ideas or suggestions would be MOST appreciated!
Regards,
KB
UPDATE: I tried to restart the phone via the power button while it was plugged into the computer via USB. Holding the power button down for 10 seconds (guesstimate) did force a restart. This was NOT the case when not plugged in. In any event, if anyone has an idea of what happened and why, I would really like to know! I am wondering if there was some sort of long press key combo or something that happened while it was in my pocket.
Sorry for replying to my own post, but I am totally confused by this issue. I did a lot of searching and reading on Fastboot, and they ALL said that to get there, you had to enable Developer Tools on your phone, download a program for your computer, and then connect the phone via USB.
Here's the thing: I have a photo of the screen, so this is not some hallucination!
1) I DID NOT have Developer Tools enabled on the device. (I do now as I enabled it to see if it was already enabled...it wasn't)
2) I DID NOT download and install an ADB program for the computer.
3) I DID NOT (before the issue) connect the phone to the computer via USB.
So my question is how the h*ll did I get into Fastboot?????
This is really concerning as maybe Xiaomi has an issue similar to the root issue One Plus had and I happened to pocket dial the right combo???? In any event, it does not give me a warm fuzzy about what is going on behind the scenes here!
Any thoughts or info appreciated.

To get phone into fastboot mode you have to hold power off + volume down button. Might have happened in tight pocket.

Thanks mysiak...in all my reading, nowhere was that mentioned! And yeah, it was in a pocket pressed up against a seat, so could easily have pocket dialed that combo.
Also, it is not easy to find the solution when it is locked there. I THOUGHT I had held the power off button long enough when trying to get out of Fastboot, but maybe missed it by a second or two. My solution was just to hold down the power button until the phone turned off. Whether that is the correct solution, I don't know as I still have not found anything about getting into and out of Fastboot without a computer.

Power+volume down button is the usual way how to get into fastboot mode. From a PC you can type "adb reboot bootloader", but many prefer just using phone buttons combo (myself including). If you want to get out of fastboot, you either hold power off button until phone vibrates shortly - this works in whatever mode, even if powered on, basically it's "emergency shutdown" as we don't have removable battery. Or if you are connected to a PC, type "fastboot reboot".
Long story short, you did it right
Btw. if you will hold power+volume up combo long enough, you'll end in stock recovery mode with "no command" on the screen. Don't panic, just hold power off button and then start phone normally
I had the same problem and plugged into the computer via USB and holding the power button down for 10 seconds did force a restart. and the phone is OK since then!!! Thank you you saved my time!!!
Thank you.
Picked up my Mi A1 this morning and it had the beautiful FASTBOOT icon on the screen. The phone has been lying on my desk for several weeks without a SIM. When I could not clear the FASTBOOT message I Googled for a solution and this thread was the result. I just wanted to record my grateful thanks. I plugged the phone into a computer USB socket and held the power button until the error message disappeared, as recommended by KB_Thailand..
XDA doing what it aims to do.:good:
It is always nice to find solutions instead of even more questions. Glad that it helped!
After the initial glitches, the A1 has been pretty dang dependable.
I still am using my A1. The A2 and A3 (someone needs to be fired over that monstrosity) left me flat. I am hoping against hope that the A4 will be 'the one', otherwise I am going to have to look for something other than Xiaomi.

Thanks and sorry for my english.
You need to unlock the device bootloader or restore the software using the msmdownload tool.
You need to hold the power button longer. Be patient it will boot.

Yes what he said. First plug it in for a few minutes to get it charged and then hold power button +vol up for at least 20 to 30 seconds. It will turn on you just have to hold button longer
