[Q] i need help - bricked nook - Nook Touch General

Hi guys.
The other day I side-loaded some epubs for Grad Trip.
I went and in the middle of the trip I was going for my Nook, open the case and just see the half of the screen WIPED OUT:crying::crying::crying::crying:
I had no idea what was happening, i tried plugging it into my Mac, didn't work.
Researched like crazy for half an hour but found nothing.
So here I am to ask you guys for help..
My Mac won't even recognized my Nook Touch, and I'm FREAKING OUT
I'm guessing it's probably because of the .DS_Store and .Trashes folders...
What should I do?
Here's my MacBook Pro Specs:
Mid-2010 MacBook Pro
Intel Core i7, 15 inch, 2.66 Ghz
PLZ REPLY AND HELP ME!
I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT'S HAPPENING TO MY NOOK! (PANIC)
sorry... I tried to post an image but it didn't let me, i think the bottom would work... it's REALLY SERIOUS so please help!! (the ex) part is just there)
ex) goo.gl/SdBXZ

As annoying as the Apple tendency is to graffiti everything it can get its hands on with .DS_Store and .Trashes, I don't think that that is the problem.
Are you saying that the bottom half of the display doesn't change but the top half is fine and responds?
Can you do a normal full power and then reboot? Is it still the same?
I'd then suspect a hardware problem with the screen.
I don't know why you can't connect on USB.
That could be related or a red herring.
I'd probably try to do a factory restore and then get an in-warranty replacement.

The following procedure details the process to Hard Reset your All-New NOOK. This process will deregister your device as well as erase all local content such as contacts, sideloaded documents, personal information, wishlists, 4 digit passcodes, etc. It is recommended you back up all wanted files to an SD card or computer. All Barnes & Noble content will be downloadable upon re-registering
1. Power off your NOOK by pressing and holding down the power button. When the “Do you want to power your device completely off” message appears, tap “Power Off.”
2. Once your NOOK has powered off, set it down on a clean level surface. Make sure that your NOOK's screen is facing up with the top of the device facing towards you.
3. Set your NOOK at the edge of the surface so you can access the power button.
4. Press and hold the Power button to power on your NOOK. When your device starts to power on, quickly let go of the power button then immediately press and hold the power button and both the bottom right and the bottom left page turn buttons together.
5. Continue to hold all 3 buttons for 5 seconds.
6. After 5 seconds, release the Power button; then release the side buttons.
7. Your device will show the ‘Read Forever’ screen then will present the Factory Reset dialog asking if you would like to perform a “Factory Reset,” Tap the "NOOK Home key" to confirm. Tap the "Home key" again to begin the process.

[Q] Blackstone like First day!!

Hello my friends.
Recently my girlfriend gave me her HTC TOUCH HD. I want to find a way to format the phone, so it would be like the day she bought it. I don't know many things about fixing windows phones but if someone knows the way to do this, i would be grateful (sorry for my English).
Thanks in advance.
restoring it to factory defaults is called a hard reset.
it is done by shutting down the device, then pressing vol+, vol- and power at the same time. this will take you to a white screen with blue font, giving you further instructions. in the end, it will reboot and start with the OOBE (out of the box experience), meaning, you get the oportunity to set the time, align the screen...
the important things is: this will format the entire storage partition, the contents of the my documents folder will be deleted, there will be no apps on it, all contacts, sms, emails, appointments, tasks and other pim data will be gone...
so it is greatly advised to backup personal data first, copy documents, photos... to the storage card (which is not affected by a hard reset), back up your pim data using pimbackup or sync it with outlook or ms myphone.
basic things like this are also covered in the first few pages of the manual, which, if missing, can easily be downloaded at htc.com
First of all thanks for your help!!
I did that (Vol +, Vol - and power) and it made a sound and now it doesn't start! Before making this action i did a reset from the back side of the phone (a button next to the battery). And the other problem i have is that the power button broke and missing so i have to push it with the pen. I don't know what to do now. I think i must go to an mobile technician.

to hard reset:
1, charge it to at least 50% power and power off
2, hold vol + and vol - buttons
3, hit power button once to power on
4, release vol buttons when you see a tri-color screen
5, follow the instructions to confirm hard reset

The hard reset was successful. My problem is that the screen is "closed" but the phone is still power on! The screen has not light so i cannot see!! And the funny thing is that the display lights after a few seconds and when i try to touch it, it immediately fading again.. How can i solve this problem?
what exactly happened?
the success of the hard reset would show as presenting you with the initial OOBE (as mentioned above). it takes you through a welcome wizard to set up basic things, where you just have to follow the steps shown. in the end windows mobile will boot, maybe customize your device further (by automatic data setup or the installation of carrier specific apps). then there would be a reboot. and from then on, you are to set up all further settings yourself. at what point in this timeline did the problem present itself?
oh, also, for backlight settings, go to start->settings->system->power and go to the 2nd tab, there you can uncheck the automatic backlight adjust and in the 3rd tab, you can extend the time, the backlight is activated.
and if this was the issue, let me point you at the official manual again:
http://www.htc.com/www/userguide.aspx?p_id=179
and here is a link to a basic faq, which, incidently, shows the hard reset procedure as the very first point: http://www.htc.com/www/help_howtos.aspx?p_id=179
you can answer some very basic questions for yourself there.
hope it helps,
regards
As i said before the hard reset was successful. I set the "screen align", the time zone and then the screen faded and has no light but the phone was still working. That's my problem. I cannot see the screen to make the changes you say.
Why don't you try to hard reset the device once more. Maybe that will fix the problem. Anyway, I don't think that the process of hard reset was the reason of the problem anyway.
Don't panic and try once more. Nothing to loose.

[Q] Please help me

As suggested, starting a new thread.
Hello,
Straight to the point, Rooted UK Atrix, running 2.3.4. no other MOD OR rom or anything, i like motoblur.
Stupidly Used Bloatfreezer to freeze 'home' without having another launcher to return to. Can't use the phone now. Trying to reset (hard or soft i do not know the difference) and the phone reads ''fastboot'' then i toggle down using volume - to android recovery and the phone is coming up with starting rsd protocol x2 and nothing else (using the power + & - methods).
If i leave my phone to just boot it resides on a white screen teasing me with noises of logging in but i cannot see anything.
I'm really lost to be honest, i have no idea what to do and i am not good with terminology either (adw, flashboots, cm7 i have no idea what they are).
I know there are sooo many threads with different answer's so that is why i am starting a new thread.
To factory reset using recovery...
1.Power off the phone, press and hold volume down button, press power button.
2.Screen will come up with "Fastboot", press Vol down key to cycle through choices until you get "Android Recovery", press Vol up key
3.Wait for the "triangle ! / Android" screen then release the volume down button
*4.Tap on bottom right corner of the screen (may take a few times). a menu will come up
5.Tap on "wipe data/factory reset", and press OK. Another Confirmation screen will come. Press Yes and OK
6.After userdata is cleared, the "reboot system now" option will be highlighted by Default. Press OK.
7.Phone will reboot to initial setup MOTOBLUR screen.
NOTE/If on Android 2.3.4 then replace step #4 with pressing both Volume buttons at the same time. Also, use the Power button to activate the highlighted option instead of looking for the OK.

Can you get to android market via your computer? If so go to it, log in, find a launcher and install to your phone. Once rebooted to the phone, it *should* give you a choice or just automatically choose the new launcher. What does double tapping your home button bring you too? I was able to find my alternative launcher by moving around via that.
sounds like ya have frozen system files
prolly be easyest to unlock bootloader and push a custom rom to it (they work better than stock anyway
Yes i did freeze the home app.
I really mean thanks to those replied. Unfortunately i have tried the first suggestion but it doesn't let me get to step 3 with the triangle, fast boot - android recovery - can't fast boot 2 etc can't get passed that.
i have just plugged it in the Laptop, taking sim out, and it has started! i thought it was broken!! but unfortunately not 'home' yet...
SO it is at the motoblur login screen, should i log in? press factory reset? Any suggestions?
I'm not sure how to push an app straight to phone so i can install a launcher...
we're nearly there guys!
In addition to what Robkort said a few posts up ^^^ to get into the recovery on 2.3.4 you may have to scroll down once you see fastboot, until you see "Android Recovery" and press vol up - when the android dude comes up, if tapping the bottom right corner doesnt get you into recovery, press BOTH volume buttons at the same time.
It is now up and working with me just simply plugging it in, running moto sync, logging in to market from laptop and sending the launcher app..
Wifi was enabled luckily before i froze home, so when i pressed log in it went 'error' then launcher pro just popped up so now i think i just unfreeze home, turn it off, put my sim in and fingers crossed..
wish me luck!
Yahooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!
It's worrying how much happier i am now that i am back on top with my phone working. Pretty dependant we become!
All my widgets, and motoblur have gone, and some writing is in a different language :/ universal inbox is not there either.
Still Thanks for all the suggestions!
I suggest this thread should be 'FROZEN' or just stay open if anyone ever freezes 'home' without having another launcher installed.
I'm glad i didn't need to flash anything, put other ROMS on, hard reset losing everything, solved pretty simple luckily.

Poor Battery Life even After Restore? Help Please..

Hello Everyone,
I have a Nook Simple Touch, which I rooted using one of the methods on this forum, and then unrooted after seeing the adverse effect on the battery.
The battery life still seems pretty poor after restoring (I basically just used the built in Nook (Deregister and Restore) function), and I was wondering if some gapps are still running or something.
Does unrooting a device involve anything more than using the built in reset? Or do I need to go to further measures.
My battery went from 96%>82% from last night to right now with probably only 30 minutes of reading. I really don't think this is normal.
TL;DR: Battery life is poor after restoring from root with built-in function, do I need to do anything else to fully unroot?
Thanks guys!
I can't post external links since I'm still a newb, but I used the info from nookdevs website under "nook simple touch > community portal > restoring to stock" when I did my restore.
Method #1. Use this if you haven't rooted your nook.
Press Settings on the touch pad, then Device, then "Unregister your Nook"
Below that press "reset to factory settings" & Confirm
It should reboot and be restored to the latest firmware you had installed.
Method #2. Use this to go back to the firmware the nook was shipped with (use this if rooted)
This will actually restore it to the same exact way you got it from the store. It's the equivalent of restoring your computer with your installations disks.
Turn off your nook completely.
If you are at the "home" screen then hold power button for 3 seconds and choose "Power off" when prompted.
If you are in the screen-saver mode then hold power button for 10 seconds until screen will freeze or go blank, or text "Your nook is switched off" will appear.
With it off, hold the power button until the screen flickers black for a moment THEN CONTINUE to hold it for another 15 seconds. You won't see anything happen at this point - but the animated arrows will stop typically.
Repeat the above step 6 times in a row. YES, Six is the magic number that tells the nook to do a restore. At the six time screen will get half white- half black and it's a good sign!
Now press the Power Button once to turn on the nook.
The touch screen will go black with a description of what it's doing (restoring). This may take several minutes - do NOT stop it.

It sounds like you used method #1. Try method #2?
Well I did what you said... and now I have no menu at the bottom of the screen and the "n" button no longer does anything..
Dang it.. What do I do?

Help with Nook Classic - Did I brick it?

This is the only forum I can find to post this to.
Got out my old nook classic and wanted to remove a soft root I did a few years ago and I flashed the wrong firmware. I flashed 1.0 and it's a newer 1005 model. Now it's stuck on the "installing software update screen" and the LCD keeps looping.
Being that it's so old I'm having trouble finding out any info. Is there anything I can do? I can't get it to mount.
I assume you tried something like this? (from here)
This will actually restore it to the same exact way you got it from the store, brand new, including with the un-updated software assuming that there have been updates since you got it. It's the Nook equivalent of restoring your computer with a fresh format and new Windows/Mac/Linux installation.
Pop out your SDCard if you have one installed, again just to be safe.
Turn off your Nook by pressing the Power Button on the top of it.
With it off, showing you the blank white screen, press and hold the power button until the screen flickers black for a second, then continue to hold it for another 12 seconds. You won't see anything happen at this point, the screen will stay white.
Repeat the above step 6 more times in a row. Yep, you read that right, 6 more times in a row. My assumption is they do this so people don't accidentally restore their Nooks during normal use.
Now press the Power Button once to turn the Nook back on.
You'll see the touch screen go black, with a sky blue progress bar, and a description of what it's doing, such as mounting the drive, formatting, etc. This takes a few minutes so be patient.
Once it does that, it'll boot up to your main screen, (it can take a while) with any previous version of the software showing, and you'll need to treat it just as you did when it was brand spanking new. i.e. re-register it, set the display name again, reload your screensavers, books and so on.
To update to the latest software version, press the "My Library" button, and make sure you're in the "My B&N Library" area; tap the "Check for new B&N content" button, it'll re-discover that it needs to be updated to the latest software, and automatically go through that process again for you. It can and often does take some time, and do some reboots, partition mounting, etc., so just be patient and let it do it's thing.
1570 6336344
I have followed that and have had no luck. It just keeps looping.
I'm thinking it's dead...
"Dead" is it will not turn on. Yours is "confused"
Seems like what is needed is a method like NookManager or CWM in which the Nook 1 boots from the external SD card and then some repairs are pushed in.
There *is* seemingly such a method, detailed on the-ebook.org, but unless your Russian is up-to-date, you'll have to see if the Google translation is clear enough to give it a try. You don't have anything to lose and everything to gain at this point.
Search on this URL in Google and choose "Translate this page": http://www.the-ebook.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=19536&sid=8c61d40bfbb40f6f5e3dfcfaa99e5545

Shield won't start

Hello everyone!
I was using the Shield (pro model, 500gb) and suddenly it won't respond to the remote control. I turned the Shild off and then tried to turn it on, but it won't. When I try to turn it on the shield button turns green but only for 1 second and then turns off. Nothing is displayed on the TV. I have tried many times turning on the Shield and it only turns green the button for one second and then turns off.
I have tried the instructions provided here, but to no avail: http://support-shield.nvidia.com/android-tv-user-guide/index.htm#t=Reset_SHIELD.htm
Has anyone encontered this issue and resolved it? Don't know how to recover my device now
Thanks a lot for your help!
Best regards,
David.

Im not a expert in this sphere, but according your written the power button on Shield not lights and this happened without your interfering, my guessing and opinion sounds like you have hardware problem, this symptoms not sounds like software. Try this one and or not I would go sending back by warranty!

Hello again!
I tried what is mentioned on the video but it does not enter into bootloader. The video mentions to press the nvidia button two times and in the first time the green light keeps on. In my case, when I press the first time, even if I keep pressing, the green light just turns on for 1 second and goes off. The second time it is the same, and actually nothing happens
Anyone has encountered this issue?
thanks!
Did you manage to eventually get this sorted?
I have an almost identical problem; the remote for my SATV Pro stopped responding, mid-session, one day.
I had to pull the plug and it would no longer boot, thereafter.
The light will stay on indefinitely, it seems - I left it on overnight to test.
It won't enter the bootloader menu, either; if I hold the power button for 6 seconds, the light switches off and I can still hear the harddrive.
when trying the push button method do not forget, the USB and HDMI should be plugged to each device before start. me I just press for start then I instantly press again and hold, works well .
Did you figure out what happened and if there is a fix for this? My Nvidia Shield Pro is having the exact issue and unfortunately my unit is a month over the warranty period =(.
Same light flash for a second after power, but nothing after. I'm thinking it must be a hardware issue, but how to troubleshoot it? Wish an nVidia engineer would help out.
My 2015 Shield 16GB went dark today and I have the LED on for 6-10 seconds after replugging, and then it shuts itself off. I only see the green Shield logo for few seconds. Tried going into bootloader, but there it too shuts down after few seconds...
same her mine just gave up.
Was Shield Experience 8.2.1 recently released or am I just seeing it now for some reason? Maybe that's what caused your problems?
edit: seems like there are issues with the TV trying to go from 7 directly to 8.2.1. See the sticky:
https://www.nvidia.com/en-us/geforc...ield-experience-upgrade-821released-11162020/
after one night unplugged i got it booting again and it run for about 10 minutes or so.
efter that i have now tried toapply new cooling paste and even tried with another power adapter, but noting seems to help so far.
and as some one else up there said, i can still hear the hdd spin
A very similar thing has happened to me but maybe my difference can shed light on this issue?
I was cleaning (sweeping specifically) and accidentally turned the shield on. I pressed the touch button on the front of the shield to put it back to sleep and I then heard a *pop* sound. After that the shield will only turn on for a second, the green light will come on for a second and then it will switch off.
I opened it up (pretty easy with just my finger nails even) and I can hear sounds coming from the mainboard when I plug it in, like it's still receiving power even though it wont turn on.
I have little to no experience repairing electronics but my assumtion is I discharged enough static to blow the power button board on the front of shield unit.
Also to add, the shield unit will not respond to the inputs of a controller or a keyboard that has been paired with it.
I identified the infinitesimally thin wires that connect the touch power button to the main board but they dont seem to be damaged themselves - I plugged the power supply in while each side was disconnected and the shield unit turned on when I reconnected the wires.
I'm going to assume that if I can replace the power button board on the front of the unit it will work again but I'm not sure and cant be sure unless I can get a spare part.
Or maybe I should just take it to a repair shop?
Has anyone managed to get their unit working properly after this specific issue.
Side note: it's strange how many others have this exact same issue in this exact month isnt it?
Just following up a little bit.
I got a new power supply from Ebay to see if that would make a difference.
It did not - the power supply is not the issue.
Oh just to add - I tried cloning the original drive but I was still able to read it on my computer and the drive-clone didn't change the outcome so that wasnt the issue either.

I turned mine off at the device last night and, pop, a huge static discharge from my finger. My Shield now exhibits the same behavior as everyone else in this thread.
Just wondering if you or anyone else every figured out a fix? Possibly blow fuse or capacitor in the power circuitry?
No change in status.
I'd like to still fix mine but I ended up buying a mini PC, which is a million times better than a proprietary-hardware device.
It's not locked down like an android only device (even though it runs on win10) and I can do much more with it than just watch movies and play android games/apps.
Anyway if anyone else can find a solution to this that'd be great.

All right guys, I'm back with the following steps
If you own a SHIELD Controller
• Unplug SHIELD TV.
• Connect SHIELD controller to SHIELD TV with a USB cable (use port closest to HDMI).
• While holding the A and B buttons at the same time, connect power to SHIELD TV.
If you do not own a SHIELD controller
• Unplug SHIELD TV.
• Connect a USB keyboard directly to SHIELD TV (use port closest to HDMI)
• While holding the "A" and "B" keys down at the same time, connect power to SHIELD TV.
• Once you enter Fast Boot mode, on the keyboard use the "X" and "Y" keys to navigate the menu and "A" to select
Use the X and Y buttons on the controller to move to "Boot recovery kernel".
3. Press the A button to select "Boot Recovery Kernel".
4. You may see the dead Android robot on screen. This is expected behavior. If so, press B button on the controller.
5. You will see Android Recovery Menu.
6. Use the X and Y buttons on the controller to move to "wipe data/factory reset".
7. Press the A button to select "wipe data/factory reset".
8. After process select "reboot system now".
8. SHIELD will boot to home screen.
Do the factory reset
It will bring you back to recovery
Select "Continue"
device will process and reboot like new
Hope this works....ENJOY
It did for me
