For people who have the Nexus 4, I'm wondering how that glass back is holding up?
The review unit at The Verge already has a small crack, from when it was accidentally knocked off of a table. And Android Central, in their review, said they were already seeing hairlines scratches on the back. I was also in a T-Mobile store today looking at their demo unit, which had a few hairline scratches on the back (even though they just got the phone today).
The glass back is one part of the build of the phone that I a bit worried about in the long run (after all, it didn't work out so well on the iPhone 4).

Ouch.... I ordered screen protector for front and back, and a soft case but they won't come until later this month.
I guess I will have to stick with my old g2 for a while?
Why is everyone so worried about the BACK glass breaking? If I dropped the phone I'd be a whole lot more concerned over the front SCREEN breaking. The glass on the back cracking would be annoying, but it won't hurt the function of the phone. The front breaking obviously would, and every single smartphone has a glass screen.

I'm curious how well it'd hold up with a Zagg Invisi-Shield on it...if it would still crack simply from shock or not. Either way, i'll still get a bumper case for the phone simply out of paranoia, lol. I drop my phones like crazy. It's amazing how crazy I am over gadgets and protecting them, yet they still seem to slip from my desk/car/hand
I think i'm going to give this phone 2 months before I invest any money into it. I'd rather play it smart and wait than to be "cool" because I was the first to get one (which honestly, nobody really gives a **** about, lol). I had friends who were all "hey, hey look. I got the new 'insertnewphonehere'. I'm one of the first people to get one" and everyone else was like "......um, ok. You want a prize or something?" lol

Yes, every single smartphone does have a glass screen, which is why there would be no point asking this question about any particular phone. It's a necessity and it's not a reason one is going to choose one phone over another.
But there's no reason the back of the Nexus 4 has to be glass, so it is relevant to consider how durable it's going to be when comparing it to other phones. Why effectively double a risk (of a glass part breaking), if it's not necessary?
It's also possible that the back of the Nexus 4 is not as durable as the typical screen. It is interesting that all of the stories of breaking and scratches, so far, are on the back phone.
thing is ..its simple... google heard all of last year how samsung screwed up the build quality of nexus with plastic..so they thought what material while cheap can provide a lil if not lot more premium feel...(the 4s pops into their head)..lg presents a similar phone..and voila nexus 4 is made.. im not saying its bad quality..to be honest its the best quality phone im gonna buy...

Anyways. Screen protectors won't hold the phone together from a drop. A case will. I'm getting a bumper.
Personally I love the glass back. I will not drop this phone and I will be using a case like I do with any expensive smart phone..
Sure, drop it onto a stone, cement or tile floor chances are it will crack. Many phones would.

Why care about the glass breaking at all? There will surely be OEM back plates available for sale on eBay (just as there are for the iPhones) and seeing how easy the Nexus 4 is to take apart, you could just replace it yourself for $20-$30!
Although the Nexus 4 back plate may be a little more expensive as it actually has components on it...

The back and front are both Gorilla Glass 2. if you are THAT worried about it, get ghost armor or something or a otterbox case.

I have not heard of anyone that had a shattered glass back on a Nexus 4. Cracked and scratched is a far cry from shattered.

Yeah, I imagine something like this was the logic. And it is a nice phone. Defintely a step up in at least perceived build quality. But there are certainly a lot of other ways to get there. The rubbery matte material on the side of the phone has a nice feel to it. If the back had been made from that material, I think it would have had an equally premium feel and seemed a lot more durable. It's also a little sad to think that the best idea Google had was to copy the iPhone.

Cracked and scratched on day 1 (even with review units) is not a good beginning. I suspect it's only a matter of time until we start seeing the image of shattered backs posted online. I hope I turn out to be wrong.

The back of the iPhone 4 is Gorilla Glass too. It didn't stop backs from shattering. Anyway, the point is that there is no reason to take the extra risk of having not just the screen as a fragile component, but also the back. It just doubles the odds of shattering something for no good reason. Sooner or later most people drop their phones. The job of a good designer is to mitigate (not enhance) the possible downsides of this.

By the way, I like this phone. I may still get one. I'm just not excited about having to treat something I carry with me everywhere, like a delicate piece of equipment. I'm not clumsy. I've only dropped my Nexus One a couple times in two years. But things like that happen when you're least expecting it and coming up with a shattered back, rather than a nick or dent is going to be really annoying. (And I hate cases and all that crap. I carry my phone in my pocket. I don't need to make a device designed to be as thin and pocketable as possible, thicker and more cumbersome.)
My back glass cracked and I see both original and unoriginal glass battery covers selling on ebay from about 10-30usd. Anyone tried these? Replacing it on my own seems like an easy task with a guitarpick. Will the waterproofing be good after replacing?

Chances are small that the phone will be waterproof again after you did it.
I did it with the Xperia Z, you need to heat the back for a while with a hairdryer and then it shouldn't be to hard to remove the back plate without breaking it. Just make sure to remove it at all sides evenly to reduce the risk of breaking it.
Also look for the back adhesive, because once you removed it, you'll also damage the adhesive.
I never tested my XZ after I repaired it to see if it was still waterproof.

If you want to replace it yourself the Z3C have inbuilt waterproof (pressure) tests so you can test it afterwards yourself, so give it a try if it's cheaper than having Sony do it for you, if you want to of course.

Nice link! Surprised to see that the pressure test says it is still waterproof even though my back is cracked. I was thinking to replace the back myself with an original cover on ebay. Should be alot cheaper? Or does anyone have experiences with how much sony charges to do this for me?
Has noone tried to replace the back on their own? removing the cover looks easy enough on youtube.

It just means that your cracked back isn't impacting the waterproof, yet at least.
Sony may do it for free unless you have dropped it etc, depends on your service center.

Can the pressure test be trusted? If the waterproofing is still there I am considering not playing around with the back-cover and just smack a case on top of it.
The cracks were my fault but does not matter with a case on, it was the waterproofing I was most worried about

No clue if it can be trusted 100%. But it's there and is a test for it, if you open a flap you should see that it doesn't work anymore.
So it's up to you to gamble or not.
Just use cpuz app
Learned today that it would cost just about 85USD including parts to replace the back cover and maintaining warranty, so for me that was the best solution.

The pressure test only tells you that the air cannot move freely in/outside of the phone, gives you a clue of waterproofness. If there is even a small leak on a flap the test will not work but if there is a really small leak in your back cover and say when you push on it to test it closes the leak temporarily the test will be good but your phone will not be waterproof. So be cautionous.
Replacing the cover without the original adhesive is risky and you loose the warranty but for 85$ (20% of the phone price) I would personnaly try.

I did it by myself and lost pressure test passed.
I plan to do the things the right way by heating the back cover edges before placing it, which should help to pass pressure test.

Can you please post instructions and which back cover you bought? My back glass just shattered yesterday and nobody in my city can repair the Z3c yet, so I want to do it myself.

I replaced the back my z3 with back from witrigs. witrigs.com/custom-back-cover-for-sony-xperia-z3-compact-orange
I tried twice and both time the adhesive peeled off after a couple days. Make sure you are getting the right adhesive with the back cover.

It's hard to know what you are getting from the replacement parts companies. 3M or OEM should be what to look for, but you have to trust the retailer since you can't verify it.

Well, 3M is probably producing a 1000 different adhesives and OEMs are using 100 different adhesives for/in their products. Hence, this is not getting us anywhere.
Anyone in possession of a repair manual? It should be specified in there.

I seriously doubt you would be able to find a sony repair manual that would give details about the parts. The OEMs want to repair their own phones, and not some repair shop. I have a five-pack of back cover adhesives on order from ebay. They should arrive on monday, will report back if they are indeed OEM as the seller indicated.

Yeah, but you know, in the end it really doesn't matter THAT much if it's OEM or not.
Because look, even the phones we have, made in a factory have chances of leakage and what not.
It seems there is no end to the z5 misfortunes. For me, it's like 5 min I decide to order the compact, then I read another piece of bad news. Then I think it can't be that bad and what other choice of compact waterproof phone do I have, then I read another piece of bad news, and so on. Anyway, Verge reports a cracked back panel. Looks just like my z3 compact.

That's very true but it also doesn't mean that it is not happening often. There were lots of reports with the z3 series. I was hoping that this spontaneous crack issue would be solved

Although in this case it is unclear if it was spontaneous or not. He reports that he has an iPhone dock with metal edges on his desk and wonders if the phone might have landed partly on it at a bad angle.
Mind, cracks should still not happen even under such conditions. But it is something different than cracking on its own - this you can at least try to prevent by being careful and/or using a case.
O course, IMO a glass back is still a workbook example of form over function. I much much rather have a "non-premium" plastic back and not having to worry about the back side breaking than the reverse situation.

Yea dont know why they like to bash on sony while it could be a user that doesn't know his stuff. We all know them people at the verge are never happy with a phone unless its a iphone.

Or it could be a real issue. It certainly was with the Z3c. I quite often do not agree with the reviews on verge, but automatically disqualifying something because it is posted on that site is a bit too much like fanboyism for me.
Also, someone who is "putting a phone on a table so it accidentally lands at a bad angle on another object" is for me very much not "a user that doesn't know his stuff". Sorry, but a phone which cannot take *that* without getting damaged simply has a design error.
Lets wait an see. It could be an isolated incident or it could be like with its predecessor something relatively common. I for my part will wait till at least Christmas before I but a Z5c. I really want for it to succeed - because if it doesn't we can probably say goodbye to any good android phones sub-5" - but I won't buy it if I have to be afraid it gets damaged each time I do not handle it with kids gloves.
I'm definitely a Sony Xperia fan boy. I love the compacts. I wish they would make compact waterproof phones forever. But even I confess the z3 compact cracked back panel was not just a Crackgate. It was very much real. I really hope it won't be an issue for my soon to order z5 compact.

And i got my z5c today to replace my z3c and i love it! The fingerprint scanner is such a win!
Well I just absolutely annihilated the backing on my two week old z5c.
Carrying boxes, slipped from thigh height onto cement and now looks like a bomb site.
Spiderweb cracks across half the back, glass splinters coming out everywhere.
I know concrete = bad but at least my RAZR m I'm writing from survived that for over a year, including concrete drops, before I put a case on it.
But Christ that back glass is anything but tough.
For the love of god either have insurance or put a case on it. This phone is slippery in any circumstance and one hard surface will ruin your day.
Hoping Sony will be helpful with repairs when I call tomorrow.
Love my phone, hate that they made it this fragile

be happy its just the back tho because the back is easy to replace.
My z5c back just broke.
Took it in my hand. Did nothing.
Heard a click and there it was.
The upside of glass its alot more scratch resistance from plastic even from aluminium
the down side is more sensitive to high heat\cold changes and hits can stutter it more easily

1. Where exactly can I get my hands on the original Sony back cover? Even though I am willing to pay Sony in the US to have it replaced, they are telling me they don't have availability to perform out-of-warranty work. They'll call me when they have availability. (Huh?!?)
2. Is the glass back itself part of the waterproofing membrane? When I watched the tear down video of the Z5C, it appears that there is a plastic membrane on the inside surface of the glass back. My basic inquiry is if the shattered back glass in itself renders the phone non-waterproof, or if it is still waterproof?

1. Try Ebay. In europe they are around 10€, much cheaper if you order them from china, however i don't think they are all original. Look for the SONY logo in the middle of the glas.
2. I would say yes. The membrane you saw is probably the adhesive of the back panel https://www.ifixit.com/Store/Parts/Sony-Xperia-Z5-Compact-Back-Cover-Adhesive/IF312-102 if the glas is broken inside the adhesive it should be no more waterproof.
However you can test it by yourself:

Thanks, but I am afraid to order from eBay, because based on seller reviews, there were many people complaining that they either did not get the item after purchase, or the NFC won't work. Many of the sellers blur/censor out the Sony mark. Not quite sure why, but it makes me think that these are not original items.

Never had problems on ebay, sometimes on aliexpress. But till now, everytime when the order didn't arrive, i got a full refund without any problem. So i think it worth a try.
Of course when a seller blur out the logo its normally a bad sign and i would look for another dealer.
Just like the title says. If I tap the back of my S8+ with my fingernail, it sure as hell doesn't feel like glass.

Noup it's glass, your tap test is useless, since it has more to do with what's behind the glass and how it is placed in the case.
Here's a scratch test, that will tell you what it is actually made of (different materials scratch at different pick hardness. In simple words. You can't scratch glass with paper):

When I tap near the top or bottom edge, the sound is somehow firmer, than when I tap in the middle? There it's just plasticky, or hollow inside. Is it normal, or is it just mine? It's making me crazy, and for the life of me I can't find a video or anyone talking about it.

Thanks for that. I bought it five days ago, and never paid much attention, until I heard that my broken Xiaomi Mi5 sounds firmer on the back glass than a 700€ Samsung. It's a floating piece of glass attached only at the edges. What did you expect?

I get your meaning and I appreciate it. And I would wholeheartedly agree with you, if not for the fact that a plastic J5 that I use for work sounds firmer and better/fuller than S8 on the back, and it's a floating piece of real plastic attached only at the edges as well. In fact, I'd rather expect J5 to survive submerging than this one. The screen feels like glass, the back does not. The problem is that I think it wasn't that pronounced when I first unboxed it. I can't be sure however.
On the other hand, I definitely want a 700€ feel on a 700€ phone. This is not being spoiled, it's that If I'm paying for the S8 for the next 6 months, i want an S8 and not Xiaomi. In other words, i want to feel happy that I spent 700€, I don't want to feel tricked.
So, here it is what i mean. The sound can't be heard very well because of the lousy J5 camera, but the wobbling is clearly seen.
Is it everyone's that wobbles this much in the middle or just mine?

I have the s8+ and i do not have this wobble you mention. tapping shows it seems hollow around the centre but i expect this as the back glass is secured around the edges where it is solid. It's the same with my s6.

Oh wow. I retract what I said. Mine is very sturdy compared to that. No wobble at all. Just seems "less solid than a solid ingot of glass". I can kinda hear a bit of hollow space behind the glass, but that's stretching it.

Yeah, today's exactly 7th day since I got it. I'll have to do it tomorrow because of work, and it's gonna be a darn ordeal convincing Telenor that it's a defect.
The procedure is they'll send it to a certified repair service, I'll get some junk replacement and probably gonna get it back 2 weeks from now at best. I'll have to see if I'm able to pull some strings so that I at least get a new device afterwards and not the "here we repaired it" same one, as my company is one of their important (lol) clients.
"Certified service partners" are very protected here, as opposed to consumers.
I'd like to have with me an example of a proper one, though. Or a video...
A question. Our company's technician says that he saw all the tests about s8 as he wants to buy it, and that the back glass has to be bendable, so that in case of breaking it doesn't shatter to pieces, but remains composite. It sounds plausible enough, but why the screen is not as bendable as the back, it's the same G5 glass?
Could it be that you guys check on different lighting conditions if it bends a bit? In the video I made I barely pressed the back at all.
I don't want to go through the whole return procedure just to get it back with the same explanation. It would mean a lot to me.

I had the silver one and it was for sure glass but now I have the all black and im pretty sure it's plastic

Why would you open it to replace the charging port if you bought it brand new you just voided the warranty Doesnt make much sense As all the S8s brand new are most def glass

I bought the phone new from Sprint more than a year ago when it first came out. Recently I had to open it to replace the charging port. When I removed the back cover it was plastic.

There is no way I assure you if its a legit device it was glass That is part of the advertisement specs and all.Only option was sprint was selling clones or it was a refurb with a aftermarket back witch is highly unlikely as even Company's like Assurion use glass backs
Now the glass will have some flex to it not much I wouldn't suggest bending or such.
If its not real glass its either been replaced or said above

Cheap poor quality glass on the camera for it to break that easily without me knowing in my pocket during its first 12 hours of use.

I find that hard to believe. Cnet dropped the phone numerous times on concrete and the glass covering the camera was the *only* thing to survive.. You must have really hit it hard. Nonetheless I do feel bad for you. What are you going to do?

Doesn't need to be a hard hit if it was a small point that hit the screen. Remember the pressure applied to the glass is a combination of the force and the size of the contact point.
Exactly. But I have ti admint I was also surprised by the CNET Video - phew.
For the OP, the Camera Glass is relatively easy to replace as part of the back.
All the drop test videos I see shows the camera being the last thing to break from extreme heights. Maybe something pointy struck it.

Wasn't able to get it repaired as the Samsung stores didn't even have the phone launched when this happened.
I have to wait around with a broken camera glass until they have the spare parts to replace it.
But I will have to suck it up and pay 1 or 200 hundred bucks to repair it.
If you paid with credit card, check if your credit card has accidental damage protection
Rotten luck man. I feel for you. Quickly get it insured

I find it easy to believe. If you tap the camera housing with your fingernail, it sounds and feels incredibly flimsy, and you can even pick at the edge of the glass a little. I have concerns about the long term endurance..
In back pocket? It drives me crazy when I see phones in back pockets lol

Only thing I can pick at the edge is the preinstalled screen protector.

And how were you able to fix it?
The Samsung store doesn't even have replacement parts yet for over a week now so now my s20 ultra has dust in the lens and is causing black marks in pictures. Keeps getting worse and worse.

I put a tempered glass screen protector on my lens and the case gives the lens protection also
