No english locale??? - Xiaomi Redmi 4 Prime Questions & Answers

I just got this phone.
In the initial setup menu, I can choose keyboard language of 'english UK' or 'english US'. But then the next screen is locale, and there is no england/greatbritain/unitedkingdom at all! no america/usa either! I put it on "st. kitts and nevis" cause that's english-speaking country at least, and phone is still in english, but this is kinda bizarre... any ideas if I can patch it in somehow?

Post some details about your ROM. In other way we are not able to help you.

As I recall the Xiaomi phones are not sold anywhere that English is the main language, ie UK and North America, so there is no English locale option, I think mine is on Algeria but it doesnt seem to really affect anything that I have noticed.

Follow this link and you will got the English ROM

There's no Ireland also.

Australia is also missing. I can only guess that the listed regions are where they have officially released their phones.

I'm not sure about that- but have you gone into Settings/System/Regional Settings and made sure it is set to English (United Kingdom) ?
Phone format isn't within the options list, but it may affect the display of numbers

open issues on samsung tablet

Dear Comunity
I bought recently a Samsung Galaxy Tab, 7, running android 2.2
I come from Windows Mobile device, I was loyal for 8 years to Microsoft. I just made this shift, so far I am happy but I have some worries and questions:
1. Locale and text
under settings, locale and text > I cannot find English Ireland and Italian...
How to add these 2 locales?
2. Brightness: the 4 hardware buttons on the bottom: can the retro-lighting be extended from (current) 4 secs to 20 secs? I could not find any settings..
3. Swype
My Samsung Galaxy tab comes with built-in swype, version 2.5 in English, Chinese, and other languages which I do not need (Malay, Thai, Indonesian, etc).
I have two questions:
1. how to add Italian module? Is it possible?
2. How to remove not relevant languages, like Indonesian and Malaysian, to reduce size?
4. Upgrade to Android 2.3:
- when the upgrade will be available? An estimate?
- will the unit be upgradable?
- if yes, do I need to re-install all software, apps and re-sync my contact database?
Doing a backup with Titanium will solve the problem? I think not, since, after a major upgrades, most app will lose their configurations files which usually is kept within system files and these ones are cleared during and after a major O.S. upgrade. right?
5. Is there a way to sync Outlook 2010's (x32) contacts to my Android Phone? Shall I first sync Outllok 2010's contacts with my account in gmail? then from gmail to the galaxy tab? If so, how to perform the 2 steps?
6. Paid apps: my ipad, my iPhone and my wife's iphone do share my same account. So I can install a paid application on the 3 devices and this is perfectly legal (up to 5 devices, Apple told me). Is the same here, in android world? I mean, if I buy a second android device and link to my same gmail account, will I be allowed to re-download the same application which I bought recently?
7. Cable
I noted that the power charger and the USB cable are 100% identical to those of my iPad: but when I used my iPad charger + cable it does NOT charge my samsung. Viceversa also true: if I use my samsung cable it won't charge my iPad and my iPhone...Does anybody know why? are these 2 cables different in the pin mapping or else?
8.
Is there a risk of damaging samsung device if I, mistakenly, swap the two cables, the Samsung calbe and the iPad cable (they are both black).
9. Can my (wired) PC, linked via samsung cable to my galaxy, provide internet access to my Galaxy Tab?
I am NOT talking about tethering (which is: galaxy tablet providing internet access to PC), I am talking about the opposite!
10. Is there an alternative "Contacts" to the default one in the galaxy?
Thanks a lot and merry Xmas!

#3: about swype
Is there a way to update from version 2.5 to latest swype version (2.9)? I have "rooted" my phone, but still cannot figure out:
- where to download the latest swype for samsung tablet
- how to upgrade (step by step procedure is most welcomed!)
Thank you!
Saulo
4. Upgrade to Android 2.3:
- when the upgrade will be available? An estimate?
- will the unit be upgradable?
- if yes, do I need to re-install all software, apps and re-sync my contact database?
We don't know when the upgrade will be available. We've not had a firm 'if' yet, but other Samsung phones are getting upgraded so it's logical to hope. Though many of the 2.3 changes appear to be integrated with the Tab already. I suspect we may just get the 3.0 upgrade when it comes out and skip 2.3.
Updates provided OTA don't wipe any data. People messing around with custom roms often clear to fix issues, but the official upgrades, rare as they are, tend not to hurt user data. Even if they did, most user files are stored on the SDCard that's not touched, and apps can be re-installed with a quick visit to the Market to redownload.
5. Is there a way to sync Outlook 2010's (x32) contacts to my Android Phone? Shall I first sync Outllok 2010's contacts with my account in gmail? then from gmail to the galaxy tab? If so, how to perform the 2 steps?

Is the same here, in android world? I mean, if I buy a second android device and link to my same gmail account, will I be allowed to re-download the same application which I bought recently?
Yes, I've done this on... 3 devices so far. If there is a limit, I've no idea what it is, but it's been easy when logged in on same account to get all my favourite apps back.
7. Cable
I noted that the power charger and the USB cable are 100% identical to those of my iPad
Ah, they're not. It's a PDMI cable for the Tab I believe that's a standard now. Apple have their own connector that, as you've noticed, is incompatible.
8.
Is there a risk of damaging samsung device if I, mistakenly, swap the two cables, the Samsung calbe and the iPad cable (they are both black).
I don't know. Put a bit of tape/dab of correcting fluid to show the difference?
9. Can my (wired) PC, linked via samsung cable to my galaxy, provide internet access to my Galaxy Tab?
I am NOT talking about tethering (which is: galaxy tablet providing internet access to PC), I am talking about the opposite!
Errr... Don't know.
10. Is there an alternative "Contacts" to the default one in the galaxy?
Do a search for contacts manager in the market and see what you like. There's the official Google one. The Galaxy one is decent. Not had a need for anything else.
1. Locale and text
under settings, locale and text > I cannot find English Ireland and Italian...
How to add these 2 locales?
Hmm, where did you get your tab? Should be an Italiano as an option.
And as for English Ireland, what IS that btw? I'm honestly curious as I usually see United Kingdom. Wasn't aware there was an Eire version, what's different?

1. - If there isn't an Italian locale, download More Locales from the Market. But I have also never noticed a seperate locale for Ireland. What's the difference from standard English/UK? Mine (purchased from Carphone Warhouse, manually updated to JMA) has Italiano a good locale option.
2. Brightness - no, there is no option at this time to extend the backlight timeout.
3. Swype - you might be able to download a new language pack from the alps settings, or again, More Locales from the Market might help you out. And don't complain about the size, 2gb is more than enough for any app-whore

Dear Jve...
English ireland is useful to me because I like the regional settings, eg: date in this format: dd/mm/yyyy and not in american format, which is mm/dd/yyyy
Also I like the 24H format provided by English Ireland locale: e.g. 22:46 instead of 10:46pm
Thanks
Saulo
I have an additional question:
In my iPad the market application (called App Store) automatically notifies me when updates are available, for ALL installed application. It also promts me to install ALL of them or SOME of them, and let me choose.
Android, coversely, does NOT prompt me with updates of my applications, when they are available. Am I doing something wrong?
Is there a hidden setting to switch ON such a notification?
If not, is there any available application or widget which automatically notify me of available updates?
Thanks a lot!

Well, dd/mm/yyyy is the standard for the UK too, and you can select 24 hour clock in "Date and Time".
That being said, on my Tab, running JME, I have the English (Ireland) and Italian locales.
You may need to flash a new ROM to do what you want, but proceed with caution if you want to go to the JMx series!

DO you have proper Android Market on your Tab, because that does tell you when you have application updates available via the notification bar.
If you do, when in the Market, press Menu and then Settings and the Notifications.

1. Locale and text

How to add these 2 locales?
I have the same questions on Languages, Spelling and Keyboard how do I add and remove these languages?
I have a German SGT (Product code DBT with the JK5 firmware) and I can choose Swedish language in the OS but not change Swype, Samsung Keyboard or XT9 to Swedish - how do I add Swedish?
The app Locales 2 in the market seems "fishy" ;-)
/skylt
Dear Dave
Thanks for your insights!
1.
About market application: i think I have the built-in one. the icon is a white-green icon like a small bag with a strap and a green picture of a robot inside the icon
if I open "market" I see that "notify me" is already selected as default
But I still do not get automatically notification...
Of course I can open all the apps and then update them (still in "market"), so my problem is not such a big issue anyway.
dear Dave
You mentioned that I need to burn my samsung tablet device with a new ROM, JME, to obtain English and Italian Locales.
Please can you elaborate a bit more?
1.Where to download it?
2. Will the new ROM be equipped with SWYPE (at least UK, US, Chinese and Italian languages)?
3.
and, most of all, why you said it is risky?
Happy New Year!
SA
I have an additional question:
I am running kies, (it does work, even if I have rooted my tablet...)
Upon clicking on firmware update i receive this message:
"model name GT-P1000
current version: PDA: JK2
Phone: JJ2
CSC: JJ2
This device's version cannot be updated"
My questions are:
1. the message is telling me that I am running the latest FROYO version, thus at this moment there is NO need to update?
2. The message is telling me that I purchased (here in China) a device which will NEVER be able to be updated?
3. The message is saying: I feel you have rooted myself, so you I won't let you update me...
If #2 or #3 are correct, can I update the ROM? what about cooked ROM suitable to my device?
2.
My second question is: does somebody know if my current version is a Korean one? And if so, can I change to an European or American one? In fact I really do not need Korean-language Swype and many asian locale settings...all together eating much memory....
Thanks and happy new year!

1. From these forums - just look in the development section. Roto-JME is probably the one you want since it doesn't replace the bootloader.
2. It comes with Swype, but the original version is better because it works "full screen", so I replaced it. No idea if it supports anything non-English.
3. Any sort of flashing carries risk - in the case of JME, if you use the Samsung packages you will end up with a security-locked bootloader - this may or may not be an issue for you, depending on if you want to run a custom ROM in the future.

Dave

dear all
If so, I will give a try to ROTO JME.
Do I need to reinstall and re-customized all my application? I have Titanium Backup, but I am not familiar with it and never used...
2.
Since Swype is the only think I dislike in my current JJ2 ROM (Singapore) I have these 2 questions:
Is there a way (possibly not very painful one) to:
- unistall malaysia, indonesia languages?
- install italian language?
3.
I have run in a big flaw today!
I received a SMS, my device was LOCKED (for privacy). But when the SMS arrived the device turned on, and, even LOCKED, it showed the content of SMS...this is not acceptable to me.
Is there a workaround? An additional settings?
I use the default Messanging
3b: if of any help, I can unistall the default tool (messanging) and install Handcent SMS, but will this fix my issue? Again, I wish that NO SMS appear on display if in LOCKED mode (password protected mode)
Thanks

[Q] language issue with LG WP7

yday I got an LG E900 Optimus WP7 phone, brand new. Phone is not locked on any carrier, it has initial language set to german, I switched to English and everything seemed to work perfectly ....until I installed some free app from the LG marketplace.
The problem I have is that when I install lets say "Weather & Clock" app in application list it shows as "Wetter & Uhrzeit". when I start it everything in it is english, but the name of the app itself is in german. I did try with other as well, same thing happens....
I think there must be some setting within the phone that needs to be changed, but it is none of the ones available by default (since all of those are set to english atm)
I did reset the phone to factory settings, still no help...
Can anyone help pls?
Couple of german words its not a problem...
^ Sounds like a Steve Jobs quote. "Big deal, get over it. Sent from my iPhone".
I have noticed other language related issues. If Spanish, Traditional Sort is selected for search, pressing the search button takes you to the Bing website, whereas Spanish, International Sort is chosen, the search button performs as it should (voice search still defaults to English for some reason).
I don't know if these two things are related, but they could be. My Spanish applications never show up in Spanish, as my system is in English.
Did you change everything in Settings -> region&language (Display language, Region format, System locale and Browser & search lang.) to english ??
I have an unbranded Optimus 7 ordered from Germany, set to English but with both German and English keyboards installed. I'm sure I sure the same issue when I installed the Weather and Clock app but it's fine now and hasn't ever repeated showing the name in German.

I have the exact same problem... and the other app that this happen sto is the Today application which shows up as "heute"...
What do we do to resolve this?
Just installed the Personal Argentina Rom and the same is happening, but it's in Spanish.
There must be a registry trick to fix this. Anyone have any ideas?

[Q] How to use Google Now in a different language from the one set for the phone?

Hi there,
I am from a Spanish speaking country, and live in France. My N4 is set in French, because in that way I can get the news of the region (in that weather & news app), and all the country-specific apps works well. Whilst I like having everything in French, I have the problem that my accent is quite strong, and Google do not understand what I say. However, I can set the speech recognition to Spanish, and it works very well... but then Google Now do not understand the order I give to him. For example, to set the alarm at 7am, I would say "poner la alarma a las 7", which Google writes perfectly fine, but it is expecting the orders to be given in French. I have tried setting my phone in Spanish, and it works like a charm, but then Weather and News does not give me the news from France any more.
Is there any way to have the phone in French, but Google Now in Spanish?
Thanks in advance for any help.

That's exactly what I have done. So, now it writes in Spanish the orders I give to it, but it doesn't execute the orders, it just search in google (because it is still expecting the orders to be done in the phone's language). In other words, that option only change the voice recognition, but not the language of Google Now.

Désolé mon ami, Orders given to google now only works in U.S english actually, Neither in European or asian Languages. you have to put English (US) as language to make it work.

Actually, that is not true. I can put my phone in French or Spanish, and Google Now in the same language (or just write the order in that language), and it will work. I can give to the phone orders in any of these languages.
What I want is just to change the language of Google Now so it can be different from that of the phone. But it doesn't seem to be possible.

That would be a great thing!!!
We're able to change the input language to english, but if the system is in other language, Google Now can't show the results properly.
For instance, I live in Brazil and my phone language is in portuguese but I speak english, so when I use Google Now I can't ask "Do I need an umbrella today?" even if the input is set to english with the whole system in portuguese.
I have exactly the same problem. I would be very glad if someone finds a solution :/. Does anybody knows if they plan to make an update for this issue?
If you have Root, maybe editing the Localization of the App might work. I think Paranoid-ROM has this Feature, but "App Settings" for XPOSED Framework should do the Trick as well.

Hey but now in 2018 there isn't any Google Now in the Settings screen of Android O. How can I change the Google Now speech detection to french.?
Here is how to change the Voice Input...
Settings > Language & Input > Voice Input - Then press the settings " star" and configure " offline speech recognition" and you can download another language if needed from there also. I hope this helps!
In the " text-to speech output" setting (also found in Language & Input in the settings) you can configure in which speech the phone/tablet should talk to you...

[SOLVED] J5 (SM-J5108) - how to change automatic area code to another region?

Hey,
I bought the J5 (SM-J5108) in China but I need to use it in Germany for my work.
When I am in Germany, I have the problem that I always have to dial the German area code (0049) - otherwise my phone treats the number as a Chinese number (and I end up with a Chinese person). Additionally, if a German number calls me (and I miss the call), and I want to call back I have to add the German area code manually first - otherwise I end up in China again.
I am using a German SIM card and my Android version is 5.1.1
I would appreciate any hints on how to change the settings! Thanks in advance!
Hi there! I use SM-J5108_HK with Android 5.1.1 as well.
Just saw an video in YouTube, probably you have already watched it.
https://youtu.be/vhjYqUaPgMI
However when I try it on my phone, can't find the "Auto area code" option in Phone settings. Hope this option appears on your phone
Btw do u got Gapps on ur phone?
Not sure if this would work but it seems feasible. This guide is official from Samsung themselves.
http://www.samsung.com/au/support/skp/faq/1045128
Thanks a lot for your help.
The Samsung guide and the video are the same procedure. I have the same issue like Yuen.Jason, there is no "Auto area code" option.
But I found an other option in the "Call" app. But I'm not sure about the correct english translation (german language on my phone). It's called something like "automatic call-localization", I turned this option OFF, then it worked for me.
