Asus Zenpad 8 (Z380M) - experience, CM - Asus Zenpad 8.0 Questions & Answers

Does anyone have any experience with ASUS ZenPad 8.0 (version Z380M)? I'm mostly curious about how it is in terms of reliability and speed. The fact that it only offers 16 GB is a bit of a turn-off, though.
And, most important, is there any working CyanogenMod available for this device?

I bought one of these to replace my kids old tablet that was a me70c. so far no luck rooting it. but it is a far better tablet. i like the MT8163 that it runs on. its very well behaved, and fast and great battery life. but of course its new and a bit higher end.

So even none of the root methods for previous versions of this tablet work here?

Been looking for the same information but what i have understood so far is that there is no root for the Mediatek CPU that powers this tablet.
From the forums i have read, there is little hope that anybody will come up with a root at this point.

I just bought a transformer and I was wondering......

Well I just bought an Asus transformer at best buy but my question was if it was really worth it or should I waited for the prime?

Look at this way.
Original Asus Transformer - Entry Level with more features then most other tablets
Asus Transformer Prime - High Spec Level - More powerful, plays 1080p, slimmer, better looking.
Then decide what you want to do with it and if the advantages of the Prime are worth the extra cost.
I own the original Transformer and it does everything I need it for so I'm happy to wait a few months after the release of the Prime before I consider changing.
But if money is no object and you can wait another month then I recommend you wait for the Prime.
Money is definately a factor and as for the features on the prime the only thing I was very amazed by was the speed with its quad core Tegra 3 thingy
If I had the money before buying the transformer I would definatley wait but I only had 400 dollars and I really needed a tablet or laptop because I recently sold my netbook which was freaking slow (that's why I sold it)
So in conclusion I might wait a few months maybe 5 months to upgrade and right now I'm looking for a cheap docking station because freaking best buy still has them at 150 dollars

It's not really an extra cost !! the Prime costs 32GB for $500 and 64GB for $600 !! Same as the old one except that there's no 16GB !!
I would've chosen the Prime... I bought my Transformer 5 Months ago and I feel like It's already outdated !! the new one is so much better !!
The thing is... I haven't had one bit of lag on my Transformer. And its not even OCd, its stock. Its perfectly fast.
And its going to be getting ICS, and the update after that too probably!
Also, you can already find reports of the speed of Tegra 3 being massively disapointing, not as fast as a quadcore should be. Whereas the transformer is faster than it should be in my opinion. Also, apart from being slimmer and lighter, the keyboard has the same layout, not inproved in my book, annoying!
I will be waiting for the next one anyway!

If I recall, same thing happened with Tegra 2. "Software not optimized" and so on.
Regardless of that, I agree with post #2, it depends on your "level" desired.
It's like buying a Nexus S or a Galaxy NX, or maybe from SGSII and Galaxy NX
If you have more than enough with the TF101 16GB then you chose correctly (I'm on the same situation)
I hate to bring this up but perfect analogy is iPhone 4 vs 4S in my opinion.
My wife got me the transformer 101 for xmas. I based my decision on the fact that most reviewers found that the tegra 3 was somewhat disappointing with most saying it was not always even noticeable as far as speed was concerned. the only lag i notice on it is due to honeycomb and not the tablet's hardware. The custom roms seemed to have improved that to an extent. I have an almost fully working version of ICS on my g2 and judging based on that version I would say that ICS will really improve the lag issues and general experience of it. Of course ICS on the prime will probably really improve it as well but Im happy with my transformer it does everything pretty well and i am rarely frustrated with it.

The right choice!

The Transformer 1 does everything that I need it to do, including providing the best screen on any tablet/laptop right now (aside from the expensive IPS Thinkpad Tablet).
I got mine with keyboard for $350 CDN. The Prime with keyboard, even if available, will be more than double that amount. I'd rather spend the extra $350 on necessities.

I bet that it will be quite awhile before Android takes full advantage of quad-cores. By then, we will have much faster tablets anyway. For those who have the money, the Prime is a great upgrade, but for most of us, we don't need 4 cores or the extra GPU power. I don't play intense games on my tablet. I find controlling the touch interface too much of a hassle.
yeah this was a quote from the review on the verge from Joanna Stern on the tegra 3 and its use on the transformer
GENERAL OS, EVERYDAY PERFORMANCE
Going into this review my biggest question was does Android and the general software experience benefit at all from the extra cores and power? I soon learned that the answer to that isn’t that cut and dry. While Nvidia says the general UI and OS should feel faster, I have only found that to be the case some of the time. While you can see in the video that swipes across homescreens are swifter, the waiting that frequently occurs when opening menus or toggling between apps on Honeycomb tablets isn’t completely gone. I also didn’t notice much of a difference when it came to multitasking — it didn’t have a problem running multiple apps, but I didn’t notice a speed increase between the Prime and the original Transformer under heavy loads.

Also battery life was shorter
So a big update on the battery life. On our standard test with brightness set at 65 percent and power saving mode switched on, the tablet lasted six hours and five minutes — exactly an hour longer than when it was set to normal mode. Still, that's an hour shorter than the original Transformer

As you can see i think it is generally an OS related problem right now than anything else. All that being said I couldn't justify the 200 dollars more for it.
The Prime is more elegant and definitely more powerful. But it is not a huge step and the Transformer 1 will get all Ice cream sandwich benefits also (probably including some speed/ smoothness improvements).
I find it a bit disappointing that there is no 16GB Prime for a lower Price but I will stick to my TF101 anyway (of course I'd switch to the Prime if someone gave it to me for free), but I'll rather wait for the next generation with higher resolutions and maybe more RAM (or Android Jellybean...)
Thanks for sharing. Missed that part, honestly.

If you want a rooted tablet, then the PRIME is not for you..bootloader is locked, apparently. So, despite hardware limitations, I am glad to have chosen the TF101 over the prime.
Hey everyone, I heard that the transformer prime is supposed to have way more battery life, like 3hrs more, than the tf101. Is this true? Because that would be the only reason whether or not I would buy it??? Someone tell me the truth.
I just got a TF101 as well and learning today that the Prime's booloader is locked made me really happy I didn't fork out the extra cash.
My TF101 was so easy to root I couldn't believe it - the only device I've rooted before is my HTC Desire Z which was a lot more hazzle.
Very happy with my Transformer

I would also want to know if this "feature" is true. It has been sad that it is because a 5th low voltage core (600MHz I think) does your background stuff, like when you have it on idle.
I also have this decision to make. 1st prime is still not available in stores in my country, but I wonder if the prime is worth the extra cash. I'm thinking like this for now prime is more cool, more powerfull, better battery, more expensive and have some troubles with wireless antenas (someone please talk about these problems, how bad is it?). For cool, it lasts few time I think, after a while, you will want to play with it rather than admiring his looks. Powerfull, dont think I'll need the extra juice, battery - Strong pro point, poor wireless reception - Strong con point
Im guessing for 500$ (or €) I can get the TF101 16 GB with dock, or the prime 32GB without the dock. But havent decided yet, but more likely going to the tf101.
also check the prime TF700T, it was thought to fix the wireless antennas problem among other improvements (e.g. higher res screen), but will be more expensive, starting at 599$

Tab 7.7 or Tab 2 7.0

I am looking to upgrade my original 7.0 Tab (running cm9) and am considering both of these devices. I am on Verizon and would still like to be connected to the network as opposed to wifi only (or I would probably just go Nexus 7). Would be interested in hearing everyone's thoughts on which unit is the better way to go. I am leaning 7.7, but the price seems a bit high. Should I be considering a different model?
Thanks in advance.

The 7.7 is the best small tablet out there, hardware-wise (yes, including the Nexus 7. The Tegra 3 solution has never impressed me, specially with all the performance problems that Nvidia's CPUs have had since the beginning). It is basically an overgrown Galaxy Note, with the fastest dual-core CPU and one of the fastest GPUs out there. The screen is just beautiful. It costs more, but it offers a lot more as well.
However, the OS that comes with it (Honeycomb) is awful. Slow, laggy, unstable. There are official ICS upgrades for the international models, but those have their issues as well. And in your case, if you buy the US Verizon model, you'll have to wait until Verizon offers the software upgrade. This will probably never happen. So, the best option is to go for AOSP-based ROMs, such as CyanogenMod 10 or ParanoidAndroid (both of which are based on JB).
The Tab 2's hardware pales in comparison, but it offers ICS from the box and has a JB leak already out there. It also has CM10/PA/other AOSP ROMs, helped by the fact that its CPU, even though is slower than the 7.7's, is the same as the Galaxy Nexus. Developers call those OMAP4-based devices "easy mode" development...
So, the choice is better hardware versus better software. I chose better hardware, since you can always improve the software but it's hard to improve the hardware of a tablet.
If you're willing to go for something bigger, the Note 10.1 sounds very impressive. It's the only tablet out there with a hardware that is better (IMHO) than the 7.7, and it comes with ICS, with JB coming in the next few months.
---------- Post added at 01:37 PM ---------- Previous post was at 01:21 PM ----------
Clarifying my point... Even if you go the AOSP route, the software on the Tab 2 will be better than that on the 7.7. And that's simply because
(a) you'll have JB sources for your device, which helps A LOT;
(b) it's a cheaper device, therefore there will be more devices out there, and so, more developers; and
(c) it's "easy mode". TI releases all the docs, and people have a lot of experience from the Nexus and other similar devices. This is why, for example, the less popular Galaxy SII GT-I9100G had CM10 way before the regular, Enyxos-based GT-I9100.
well, from my experience, av been also a user of the GT - P1000, and i must say that it was the best gadget i ever had, moving to the 7.7 I was hesitating between 7.0 plus and this, never thought about the tab 2 for many reasons.
the truth is, i didn't find the 7.0 plus 3g, so i ended up with the 7.7 3g
i do like the 7.7, holding it in my hand is very confortable (my hands are huge, handy worker) but I HATE THE SMALL FONT, my GT - P1000 was great, i can read on it and use it without problems, but this, no way! by the end of the day you will have a horrible headache because if this tinny text...
no way to change it, even if there is an app who make it bigger (big font) but it laks stability, and the system will be affected, turns it to huge, but without it, you won't be able so see anything.
best regards

Zenfone 3 Development

Hello guys.
I currently own a Zenfone 2 ZE551ML running CM13.
I fell in love with the ZE552KL (I wanted to buy the Zenfone 3 deluxe version but its way out of budget)
I can acquire the ZE552KL for fairly cheap but what's setting me back from getting one is the possibility of not having Lineage OS support since I don't like the bloated ASUS ROM although there is a custom debloated version in here.
Also the ZF2 was an X86 phone and the community support was quite big, so I assume that the successor with a Snapdragon will have an even bigger community
The question is: Can I buy it and expect a RR or LOS ROM in the future or not ?
This is a big issue, at the moment we do not have custom rom yet. I hope Lineage OS will support our device, I tried it on my Nexus 7 2013 and it is really good.
Possibly, possibly not. Keep in mind that ROM developers are hobbyists developing ROMs in their spare time. It just so happens that there isn't a very large developer community for the Zenfone 3 compared to the Zenfone 2. The Zenfone 2 had a huge amount of publicity behind it - really decent specs for a really great price, in an age where budget phones were getting really good, but still had slow low-end processors. The Zenfone 2 got covered by every major tech website, and was largely received pretty well by enthusiasts. And thus, it had a decent dev community. Issues with the Zenfone 2 started to crop up before long though, and the hype died down pretty much as fast as it came in. Nowadays the only reference you'll find to the Zenfone 2 on forums and around the internet was that it was a phone with great specs, but terrible quality assurance, even worse software, and very bad update support to boot. Because of all this, the enthusiast crowd that the Zenfone 2 aimed to cater to mostly drifted away from the ASUS brand over to OnePlus, Motorola, and Xiaomi - just to name a few. It's a shame, since the Zenfone 3 mostly fixes the problems the Zenfone 2 had and is actually a really nice phone. And it's unlikely that ASUS is going to get the enthusiast crowd back - at least not any time soon. The Zenfone 3 is just not priced competitively in most markets. In the U.S. for example, the phone costs almost as much as the OnePlus 3T, a device with tons of developer support and much higher specs. In some markets it's priced better (it's a steal here in Canada), but it won't be enough to draw back the enthusiast crowd for the foreseeable future.
As it stands now, the user base of the Zenfone 3 is relatively small. With most of the enthusiast market gone (they fled the ASUS brand after the disaster that was the Zenfone 2), all that's really left is a small group of dedicated fans. So far all the ROM development for this phone have been lightly modified versions of the stock ROM, and there is no sign of any other ROMs being in development right now. Unless you can deal with the stock ROM - which, for what it's worth, has gotten much better in Android Nougat - I wouldn't recommend this phone if you're hoping for custom ROM support. Maybe this'll change in the future, but for right now, I wouldn't place any bets on there being any more custom ROMs released in the foreseeable future.
I was reluctant to buy the Zenfone 3 given that there are no custom ROMs available yet. I was also was very interested in a phone from OnePlus or Xiaomi, but the price difference was just too high. However, I just could not find any other phone with the specs that I wanted without spending at least $150 more (in Canada).
Although I am hoping for LineageOS for the Zenfone 3, I find the stock software tolerable. My old Zenfone 2 was the first phone that I have had that I could live with the stock ROM. The Zenfone 3 is marginally better and the battery life is the best I have experienced (even compared to my work iPhone).
One the one hand, I want to encourage people to get this phone (the more users, the more likely custom ROMs will be made). On the other hand, I am reluctant to recommend this phone as there is no certainty that LineageOS will ever be made for it.
BTW. The NewEgg deal on eBay is really good. To me, hands down the best value phone currently in Canada.
What made think of buying a Zenfone 3 is the fact that if I settle for an used it it will cost half of the One Plus 3

That's probably not a bad deal then, again if you can tolerate ZenUI. The hardware is much improved over the Zenfone 2, the build quality is suddenly amazing. Specs in the ZE552KL actually are about the same as in the Zenfone 2 ZE551ML though when you look at pure performance. Battery life is great, and the camera suddenly doesn't suck either. The fingerprint reader is fast, too. The lack of NFC is unfortunate, and the camera app is still pretty much unchanged from the Zenfone 2 (so, slow in other words). Still, I'd say for the price it's pretty good, and certainly a better phone overall than the Zenfone 2.

Lenovo Tab M8 FHD

Hi, sorry I know this isn't the M8 forum, but there is no M8 forum, so I hope somebody here might have a bit of knowledge about a different Lenovo tablet. I'm looking for a decent 8" tablet to replace an OLD Samsung Tab Pro 8.4. I've never had a MediaTek device, nor a Lenovo tablet (but plenty of thinkpads, going back to an x20). Any experience? advice? reviews? I'm looking at the M8 FHD version.

I am using myself a Lenovo Tab M8 (FHD) (TB-8705F). It replaced a Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 (SM-T710) and my criteria where Full HD, 8", decent update support, "plain" Android and 3+ GB RAM. A clear fail is the aspect "decent update support". Otherwise, I am mostly fine while power is limited. Look and feel is nice while the edges are kind of "sharp" when holding it for a while.
My alternative was a Samsung Galaxy Tab A 8.0 (2019) but this has a poorer screen resolution (while I know Samsung is quite OK with updates with some exceptions).
I remember an review of the HD version which was addressing also the differences but this one is matching to my experience also the FHD (good battery, poor update support, ...) besides the obvious differences (screen).
Overall, not sure whether I would buy it again but haven't identified a better option yet.

Thanks,
I ordered one based on price and that old TAB Pro still being on Android 5. The only other real option in the running was the LTE-enabled Samsung 8.3" Tab A, which has improved resolution over the 8", but is at least twice the price.
Hi there! I haven’t been happy/have ran into issues with the Android 10 update. Is there a way to flash android 9 back onto my m8 Fhd?

I bought the Lenovo m8 FHD. Great tablet, Im using mine as a car head unit to replace a buggy old Nexus 7 with Timur's kernel. I was gonna get a Galaxy Tab A or any Galaxy but none of the sizes woud fit (too wide). When I discovered the Lenovo was the same width with more height, much better spec it was a no brainer. Just not much help available on here for them, dont know why (see my latest thread). Its perfect for a car head unit! Rooted with magisk, I bought a LavaSync OTG hub which doesn't require root but bought it anyway (American company, google it). This provides USB audio out to my miniDSP. I just need to increase volume steps then I can install the thing. Use tasker to set up any automated options, ie when powered [do this] else [sleep...]. Simples

Just got Tab M8 FHD and decided to give Android 9 a try since tablet is more laggy than I though.
I got rom from https://mirrors.lolinet.com/firmware/lenovo/Tab_M8_FHD/TB-8705F/
Flashed it with SP_Flash_Tool, using the Download agent MTK_AllInOne_DA_6765.bin (found in the archive with the ROM) (I disabled "Check LIB DA match" in Flash tool options).
Rom TB-8705F_S100099_200706_BMP.zip is Android 9. Got Magisk and EdXposed running.
Maybe it's just in my mind but it does seem faster than Android 10 - well at least when scrolling through menus or browsing Play Store. Overall performance is probably the same so downgrading won't make games / apps run smoother.

I am running a Lenovo Tab m8 FHD Tb-8507F. I have manually flashed the system.img for Android 9 from the link.
xaforib posted using fastboot. Unfortunately, my device is now stuck in a bootloop and I cannot enter recovery mode to perform a factory reset which seems to be the solution on other devices. Does anyone have any idea how to fix this? When I flash the system.img for the Android 10 versions from the link, they work. My problem lies in flashing Android 9. Thanks! Custom ROM for Lenovo M8 FHD (TB-8705F)

I purchased this nice little tablet to replace my much loved Nexus 7 2013 2nd Gen as it's about the same size with better specifications.
I've unlocked and rooted the tablet and now looking for a decent custom rom... I guess I should have looked for the rom before unlocking but the cart before the horse seems to be my way.
Anyway, are there any custom roms for the M8 FHD?
I was thinking about dabbling with building a custom rom but I don't have any Linux coding experience.
I'd love to get Lineage or asop for this nice little tablet.
Unfortunately there's not much community support for this tablet even though the build is one of the best for us not wanting a 10" tablet. I've searched around here, other ROM sites, and have posted things in Lenovo's forums. From my experience, the Lenovo Android 10 ROM is garbage. It breaks widgets and notifications.
After unlocking mine I was able to go back to their Android 9 image which is still pretty good. It has some issues, but overall it functions well. I don't use the tablet often though.
One frustrating thing is that since Lenovo seems to not care, even though its an FHD tablet, they won't get the Widevine certification needed to play HD videos from the major players like Netflix.
I wish there was more support and love for this 8" tablet. I purchased a Samsung Tab A 8" at the same time and it was really sluggish compared to the Lenovo and didn't have much support for it either.
Too bad this was to be my Nexus 7, 2013 replacement... No roms makes for a boring tablet
I have to agree with you guys. I've had this little tab since June and it has been great. It has been well worth the $100.
I also agree that Lenovo needs to support Android better for its tabs. They have some great hardware that sometimes gets crippled by software. That's definitely the case with my old P10. It's really a great tablet that I would still use but it loses Wi-Fi every 5 minutes and the problem is 100% software.
