4K - UHD - Stock Camera Cropping - Xiaomi Mi Max Guides, News, & Discussion

Just made an interesting discovery regarding the Mi Max stock camera and 4K. I was running some tests on the stock camera vs 3rd party to check output quality, HDR speed, etc. when I noticed the stock MIUI camera app severely crops the sensor area when shooting 4K(UHD). I often use Cinema FV5 to get little more control over video when shooting on Android and found that although the MIUI camera app crops the sensor when switching to 4K vs 1080p, CFV5 does not. Nor does the Google camera app when set to 4K, you still get the same wide FOV as 1080p.
I haven't seen anything written about this so far so just wanted to flag this up as a decent workaround.

How to record hand-held 4k videos?

My main problem with the camera are hand-held 4k videos that would require some shake reduction.
I understand that the latest US ROM may have better shake reduction: Camera
Camera image processing algorithm enhancement, like anti-shaking, HDR etc.
How do you record hand-held 4k videos? Do you use a third-party camera app with shake reduction?
Thanks.
The stock camera app seems to work and handle shake reduction pretty well.

OP5 camera s/w - available in custom ROMs?

On my Note3 previously, it shot decent pics on the samsung ROM, but when I flashed custom ROMs (AOSP) and used the non-samsung camera app pics looked horrible.
Currently on a Nexus 6p, and I like the fact that irregardless of the ROM I use, the default camera app (e.g. Google Camera) can always shoot nice pics.
Contemplating the OP5 - is this the same with OP5? If I move from the stock ROM to any of the custom ROMs, will the camera app consistently be able to shoot the same quality pics/videos?
I stand to be corrected here..
Currently the OP camera isn't available on non-oxygen stock roms.
The quality of photos using Google Camera (or other non-OP camera apps) is generally as good as the OP camera app, and some people would say better, as the OP camera app has aggressive smoothing which is noticeable when you zoom in on a photo. The watercolour effect.
The downside of non-OP camera apps is that there isn't support for the second lens. This rules out the 2X optical zoom, and also the OP Portrait mode.
There is also a lack of support for 1080p 60fps video, and I *think* EIS for 1080p and 4k videos.
There is OOS camera in RR unofficial

What is the best video camera app for axon 7?

I am looking for a camera app that can utilize the axon 7's 60fps at 1080p and 120fps at 720p, so far it doesnt matter what app ive tried (on oreo stock a2017u) every app only actually records at 30fps, ideally it would be something like open camera where I can manually change the bitrate shutter speed iso etc.
Im on the stock oreo rom but if needed I can install Lineage os, (but i would rather not)

Stock camera app? I haven't seen any other app so far which can actually utilize 60fps and slowmo. It's ZTE's fault for their weird camera driver programming.

the issue is that the stock camera app is just so... mediocre, to say the least, th camera quality is a sold 6/10 but could be sooo much better q.q
I wonder does it need Camera2 API?
I just shot a little test with Snap Camera HDR then checked with an editor app and it was about 43 fps but when I hard switched it to 60 fps and tried to shoot it failed.
It's still my favourite camera app.

I couldnt get any apps to shoot at 60fps+ regardless of camera api2 support or not, I was experiencing the same thing with snap camera hdr, regardless if the bit rate was 20 or 200Mbits/s and regardless of encoder highest I could get was that 43 fps, even on 720p.
Hello
I am usin OpenCamera
blue icon
It has everything. you can change Bitrates, resolutions, wide array of settings.
IMHO must have app. For videos i choose that.
Check it out and let me know howw well i have have helped you and how this is the solution to camera XD (joking a little bit) But yes,its the Best in my opinion. i use it. (axon 7 4k at 80Mb/s is amazing...)
I'll be honest, Open Camera has potential but it's never good enough. I try it occasionally and then uninstall. It has weird eccentricities but the biggest one is often the preview is quite different to the captured image.
Snap Camera HD shats all over it in so many ways.

Wide Angle

Is it possible to record a video using a wider angle like the one used for photos? Videos are always zoomed in on the stock camera app or Gcam. Although Short videos have a slight wider angle it only allows 15 second videos. Is there any away to change that?
you have to disable video stabilisation

I disabled but it didn't work
Maybe you can try this version:
MGC_6.2.024_RN7_V1c.apk
I'm using it and it works perfectlt for wide angle video. Even without disabling Video stabilization.
Enjoy!
*try to search in google for the apk

I've tried that version but found no sucess with it. Here are some screenshots https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=12GGWGn79PXOYItFPlVGv8kYehRRIU7QV
So GCam is great at everything photo-related on this phone, but its video output is not impressive except for the 4K option.
You should stick with the stock camera for video recording as it does a great job using EIS.
If you want a wider view, disable stabilization in the stock camera or record at 60 fps.
If you want the widest possible field of view, use Open Camera, disable stabilization, and set the video resolution to a 4:3 ratio. That will use the image from the entire sensor

Thanks for the help! One strange thing is that on Open Camera setting a video resolution to a 4:3 ratio (video stabilization disabled) allows a wider view. On the stock camera even when disabling image stabilization/1080p60 it won't use a wider angle, unless you compare to 1080p30, which has a closer angle than 1080p60. Any ideas what could it be? There's no option on Video Settings on the Stock Camera to set a 4:3 ratio.

That's fully expected as the digital video recording standard nowadays is to record in 16:9 widescreen. I haven't seen any newer phone whose stock camera app offers anything but widescreen resolutions. Some will have the option to record in the screen's resolution and/or ratio.
So, when you're talking 1080p, it is understood that it's 1920x1080, which is a 16:9 ratio.
The sensor produces a 4:3 image, but in video mode the image is by default cropped to 16:9 – the top and bottom of the image are cut off, making the vertical field of view narrower. You have to use a third-party app to enable the sensor's ability to record 4:3 video since this is non-standard. But for typical purposes, I don't know why you would do that, although you can, if you need your camera to capture as much of the environment as possible All our screens are (ultra) widescreen though, and it's more comfortable seeing widescreen video on them.
Electronic image stabilization further messes with the field of view. It 'reserves' a margin on all four sides of the image and uses gyroscope data to move the image back and forth within the frame, compensating for the movement of your hand, and giving the appearance of a more steadily held camera than it actually was. Further software trickery may be/is involved. The final result is that of a 'zoomed in' image. That's also the impression that you might get from the difference between a 4:3 and a 16:9 cropped image from the same sensor.

Video quality

Your friends are never going to believe what you did. The only way to prove it to them is with that video you took. Rate this thread to express how videos shot on the Xiaomi Mi 10 come out. A higher rating indicates that videos are smooth (and not choppy) and that auto-focus works very well, and that the camera adjusts quickly to different lighting conditions while recording.
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
I have never seen better video recordings than on the Mi 10 so far. 4K @60 fps is gorgeous in terms of sharpness, colors & artifact handling.
The video bitrate @4K is at 38 Mbps.
At 8K it has insane 104 Mbps.
The stabilisation is also remarkable.
I wonder what the Samsung S20 devices are capable of?

At the moment I only have the Mi 10 at home.
When my Pro has arrived I will definitely try it out

Question to Mi 10 owners - how would you rate 4k60fps quality?
In some samples on youtube, I saw that 4k60 isn't fluid and drops some frames. The same it was on mi 8, but using gcam 4k60fps works quite well - much better than native cam app. Would be interesting to hear if somebody uses Filmic Pro / Mcpro24fps on Mi 10 to comment if there's some video quality increase and stability using 3rd party apps?

Video quality is actually one of the best I have ever seen on an android phone (iPhone is the king of video in my opinion) at least on the main sensor (the wide angle is very, very dark and it can't do 4k60 on native camera, only 4k30 or 1080p60) . I'm on Miui.eu beta and, at least for me, 4K60 is very fluid. But is important to say we don't have electronic image stabilization at 60fps (at any resolution) so the video is gonna be a little shaky using only optical stabilization.
Filmic pro is incapable of using the wide angle or the macro lenses, only the main one (mi9 can use all of them with the last updates of Filmic Pro), but it can do 4k60 and 1080p120. You can enable OIS, EIS or even EIS+OIS on Filmic, but EIS seems to be doing nothing actually even if you enable it. Apparently it does not works yet. I appreciate the manual controls Filmic gives you, but since Mi10 already have a manual mode for video and other advanced options like a very good LOG mode, the only real benefit of using filmic is the higher bitrate, except if you want really manual precise controls.
Feel free to ask any other question. Hope I helped.

Thanks xLeonix,
Glad for your answer!
Interesting to know about the sensors availability on Filmic Pro. For Mi Note 10, I send request to devs through the app: information -> version x.xx.x (click) -> and press contact us (after that you will be guided to email, the app will generate metadata.json file and please write to FilmicPro devs to look up for possibility of enabling additional sensors. Thanks to Filmic Pro team they helped me and with latest update gave additional (ultrawide/tele) sensors option to use with Filmic Pro. Hope this would be with Mi 10's ultrawide camera too!
For 1080p/60 and 4K60, have you tried to enable electronic stabilisation through GCAM app (urnyx and burial mods)? On my wife's Mi 8 4K60 works stabilised with OIS/EIS via gcam. EIS works interestingly, but if there's not much camera movement, I would say the quality is fine. Also can use much higher bitrate without loss of quality (native camera's app bitrate is equal for 30/60fps).
Also would be interesting to see a comment from a person, who also tried the mcpro24fps on Mi 10 - does it let to use ultrawide camera, and availability of 4K60.

Answering your questions, yeah, I have tried a couple Gcam mods for photo and video (specially for night sight on front facing and ultra wide lenses, since Mi10 doesn't let you use might mode on front facing camera. It didn't let you use it on ultra wide neither, but xiaomi added night mode on ultra wide with an update).
At the moment, I have installed Urnyx and Nikita gcam mods. Urnyx surprisingly let me record 4K60 on the ultra wide (can't do that on native camera) but with no stabilization of any kind. And it freezes if I try to enable 60fps on the main sensor. Nikita let me actually use the main sensor at 4K 60 with EIS but it isn't even half as good as the native one, It's only a little better than using OIS only. Nikita by the way freezes when I try to use ultra wide sensor.
About mcpro24fps, there's not much to say. It can do 4k 30 on the main camera with OIS, EIS or both OIS+EIS. It can do 1080p120fps too, but for some reason it won't let me do 4K60 in any way on main camera. Mcpro24fps can use wide angle and macro lenses without any problem, but it can't do 4K60 on ultra wide, only 4k30 . Surprisingly mcpro24fps let me set the ultra wide sensor to 120fps at 720p, but it is really noisy (unusable) and the field of view seems to be cropped so it almost match the main sensor. So there's no use for it. It can also do 720p 120fps on the front camera. That's all I can say about mcpro24fps based on my testing.
If you have any other question, feel free to ask. Hope I helped!

Interesting that with Urnyx you can record with ultrawide! Nice!
By the way, they just added support for the Macro and Ultra wide lenses on Filmic Pro's lastest update.
