Are you kidding me? All carriers except Verizon? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Maybe I'm jumping to conclusions, but I thought the 6P was an unlocked device agnostic to all carriers.
I'm tempted to see what happens if I flash this factory fresh on my 6P which is on Verizon.
Edit: If I were to take a guess, either Verizon only wants their Pixel line of devices on 7.1.1, or there is an actual problem.
Regardless, I may bootloader unlock my device again if Verizon gets shafted in the update for 6P

Yeah, that caught me off guard too. Killed the Dev Preview, and updated everything EXCEPT for working on Verizon. Dev Preview 2 worked on VZW, so my question is, what the heck did they break so bad that now VZW doesnt work?

Could it just be something to do with the Visual Voicemail on Verizon being cooked into the newest 7.1.1 build?
But I am no way defending Verizon from being Evil. They are the Evil CDMA Red Dragon for sure.
*Sprint SERO FTW! :toot:

I would hope. We may be giving Verizon too much credit though. However I would do the opposite of complain if they did bake in VMM and Wifi Calling into 7.1.1 Nexus. Or heck, even one of those would be nice

Sooooo the real question is, who's gonna try flashing it and report back??

Really though, it must just be some sort of off the wall issue or feature that might have held it back from them alone. The 5X doesn't have the same update limit so, it's just something 6P specific. (Unless 7.1.1 brings Pixel features, and Verizon doesn't want Nexus to rain on their Pixel party just yet...)

Lol. Might want to Bootloader Unlock for that one. That is key
If i was still in Custom Rom mode for my daily driver, I'd have no problem doing so.

I just flashed it and so far calls work fine between me and another verizon phone. Messing around to see if I can find what doesn't work, if anything.

This might be a crazy idea but you might just want to flash and see if it works if it doesn't flash back to DP2 or 7.0 what is the problem?

so i flashed it, im on verizon looks like there is no sound for notifications and ringer. In settings it just shows none with no option to change, so far from what ive noticed

Right now I am bootloader locked with OEM unlocking unchecked. If something were to go wrong, I'd most likely be screwed. Or maybe it wont even flash for me

You can't flash anything with locked bootloader only accept official OTAs which you won't get probably because 'no verizon' so flashing it yourself is the only option really (I guess, OTAs will be rolling out to everyone over the next few days/weeks).

Everything seems to be working so far.
Created a boot.img that doesn't force encrypt. Flashed it then wiped userdata to be unencrypted. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B57DcrCR3fugajI4b3RleTlJSDg/view?usp=sharing
Then got root and adaway working using existing root stuff I had sitting around, I don't even know what the latest versions are but I used - TWRP 3.0.2, Magisk 7.0, phh superuser 17 magisk version, adaway systemless hosts v2, and adaway downloaded from f-droid.
Then flashed a zip I made with Pixel Launcher, Nexus Launcher Icons, and working stock version of the pixel Live Wallpapers with updated libs. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B57DcrCR3fugZDZaSnhYS05OSGM/view?usp=sharing

It's almost fully working on VZW.
The problem is, and the probable reason for that notice is, that Verizon likes to promote their devices by their sw versions. I remember when their G3 got Lollipop first........that f**kin ad was everywhere.
So I believe they would like to throw in their bloatware in to the OTA first.

Perhaps, but the DP2 radio is the same as this, and works fine for me. I'm really irritated by this, after buying from Google. It has to be some proprietary stuff to make CDMA work, except isn't sprint CDMA too? And they aren't an exception for the new release.

Well I just installed the OTA image on my Nexus 6p (which runs on Verizon). After the upgrade completed, I noticed that my data connection was not active. The phone could make calls, but no data. I tried switching in and out of airplane mode, but that didn't fix it. So I powered off the phone, then powered it back on, and all was well. I connected at 4G and everything appeared to be fine. However, I do notice is that the VoLTE setting is nowhere to be found. If I search for "voice" under settings, I see "Enhanced 4G LTE Mode". But if I click it, it takes me to the "Cellular network settings" page, which does not list that setting. I just made a test call to another Verizon phone, and it didn't sound like the enhanced voice mode was active. Not really a big deal though. I'm sure a new update will correct that before long.

Aah. Well, on DP2 I noticed I was unable to call voicemail, it just hung up on me. The fix ended up being disabling enhanced lte/hd voice in my account. I still have the vvm. As dp2 is the same version as the official, that's likely the reason a separate release will be needed. Personally, I don't care about the HD Voice, but enhanced LTE would be good to get back.

[AT&T] 4.4.2 Update CHANGES

I'm starting this thread because the official update thread has become more of a "I can't update" and "this is how you get around that problem" than about the result of the update... which is not only fine but important. But I think it's just as important we discuss whatever changes are taking place in the new update once it successfully installs.
This thread is strictly for AT&T, and I encourage others to start one for other carriers as the bloatware and other crap will differ.
What I know:
- OTA Kit Kat update began rolling out on March 26th with the majority of updates available in the evening and then mass-available the following day (I updated on the 27th).
- If you have not rooted your phone, most people should have no problems with the OTA. If you are experiencing issues, go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51457419
- Once the update is complete, a number of people (or everyone?) have reported (including myself) that touch does not work on boot. You can take out the S-pen, navigate as needed, and tell the phone to reboot. Once rebooted again, touch should be restored (verified on multiple reports).
- New, faster boot time.
- More responsive menus and motion.
- Revised status icons from the "colorful" Jelly Bean look to the monochromatic grey.
- Reports of hotspot being disabled (which means AT&T lied IMO when they sold me on the "hot spot is free now" line).
- Google Wallet does not allow click to pay (someone else will need to elaborate since I have never used Wallet)
- There is presently no root for the OTA version of KK (that I know of)
Please add to this, evaluate what bloatware remains, or was added, what works still, what doesn't that used to work on JB, and so on.
Also, someone with an S-view case please let us know if the S-view window functionality still works.

That's ok, I stated that a number of people did, not everyone. Not sure why. It could be due to whatever software was previously installed. But for those that have the issue, there's the fix.
I wil be honest, I have an unofficial S-view cover. But I just yesterday got my otterbox and struggled to get it on, dust-free. *sigh*.... .I will do my duty now and remove it from the otterbox and reinstall the generic S-view cover. FWIW it LOOKS official... has "Galaxy Note 3" in the official logo style on the bottom and "Samsung" on the back, embossed into the vinyl. Cost me 9 bux shipped. Worked fine before, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

I haven't updated (I won't give up Safestrap), but from what I've seen, almost all the "improvements" have been done to 4.3 by the devs here. I have a PIN coded lock screen - with a camera. My GPS works except when I turn out of the development. (In the entire city, and on 75 mile trips, that's the only place it glitches, and it recovers in about 3 seconds) ... The only real "improvements I see are a little bit more RAM, a little faster (faster than X-Note on 4.3?) and default text app (but since I run the Kit Kat app, and there's nothing else installed, that's a big yawn to me).
AFAIC, this isn't 4.4.2, it's 4.3.1, with a few things broken from what you guys are saying. It's a minor point upgrade, nothing like what I think most of us were anticipating all fall.
Can't side load any apps. The install button doesn't work.

New Update on my Sprint S7 3/29

So I got a notification that there is an update as of today 3/29 and I wanted to know if anyone here has received it as well and went ahead and updated. If so does your hotspot still work? I have done the MSL/DUN trick to get hotspot and want to make sure that installing this update won't break my ability to use the DUN trick. I do realize I will probably have to re-add dun to get the hotspot working again after the update.

I always look back to my iOS days, don't take updates unless they shove it down your throat. Yeah, I think this is what breaks the dun trick. I see I have an update available as well. I won't take it unless they force it. My hotspot is working fine using the dun trick.
My gig bucket plan includes free Hotspot, so updating now
Yeah I got the update also. Will wait until others install before I pull the trigger.
For me, the update broke the free hotspot trick that involved modifying the APN settings. They're completely locked down now.
Now my hope is LG G5... If same, I stay on S5 for a while.

Is that a sprint phone? Available?
Can't APN info be edited thru a program like CDMAtool? Even if it is disabled in the ##data# with MSL? I haven't needed tethering yet since I've had the S7, but it is nice to have for those times when my ISP decides to break.
Nonetheless, I am withholding performing the OTA even though most of the new stuff sounds good. I tried to capture the OTA's URL thru a logcat but it seems that Samsung/Sprint are too smart for stuff like that, or I'm too dumb or lazy lol. I wanted to get the zip from the server since you can't read /cache without root permissions. If someone can get a .zip of the OTA pulled, that would be great. An unlocked bootloader would be better. I don't really regret keeping the S7 (yet), but probably will get the HTC 10 if it doesn't have crap like the S7.

S7 took a day
It's already been confirmed that the T-Mobile G5 will have bootloader locked, I'm guessing this will apply to all us carrier versions
I can also confirm Hotspot broken. APN Settings greyed out. I hardly used it. But it was nice in an emergency. So if you need your free hotspot, do not update. I'm experiencing better battery life. But others have complained about bad life. I've remove and disabled all the apps I do not use as well as use power saving mode on most apps.

Not sure what you mean by "safe" but typically you just use Odin to flash full stock 5.1.1, do a factory reset in stock recovery afterwards and you're done.

Not really the place to discuss it so I'll keep it brief.
My girlfriend has a Nexus 5X. The phone is amazing, updates are quick and common. It operates perfectly on marshmallow with no noticeable issues. We live in bum**** and she still gets service wifi calling and texting is fine, and no contracts. We pay about 42 a month for hers with insurance.
Well one thing I noticed (not sure if it was this update or the last one) is that when you pick an application to use (like browser) it becomes the default. With the old OS it would ask you to use just once or make it the default. Arrgggg I prefer to pick the application as needed and not make it the actual default.

The MM update made this change to default app handling. I liked the old way too. Now if I want to change the default app I have to remember which app was set as default before I can make the change. Sometimes remembering which app was set as default isn't easy to do.
Deleted. Think was in wrong thread.
Been a long time sense I've posted anything in this forum.
I just went back to the Note 4 and did the MM update and have noticed a heavy draw on the battery compared to LP. Am wondering if letting it did cycle through a few time might correct the battery drain. Was on an iPhone for awhile, but for personal reasons came back android. Has anybody tried that yet. Have been temped to hard reset and start fresh to see if it fixes it.
This update has increased the battery draw on mine and it is running HOT! Need help.

I definitely think that is the update that's gonna prevent samFail root method and being able to roll back to previous fw. Thank God I'm already rooted and can't take that update. Well i have found a weird issue, and i don't believe it was there before the update. Microsoft Word will not open(crashes instantly) same for Excel, and MS apps. Then i notice my icons frame option is greyed out and i haven't a clue.
I have the unlocked note 8 with the Sprint firmware flashed to it and I got the update yesterday. I did not notice any bloatware being added after flashing. But I did get wifi calling and now have calling plus after the update.
Root and calling plus working for me have to move a few files around but it works

Say Bye to third party themes on pie.

Just thought I'd let those of you who can't root their note and didn't know that Samsung blocked all the ability to theme/change fonts on your phone from anywhere but their official theme store. So, if you have substratum and have purchased andromeda, themegalaxy, swift installer.....etc, you are SOL. In order for any of those to work, you'd have to have root. This is going to be my last Sammy phone ever. First they lock down their bootloaders (I know carriers are involved and want you to upgrade every year), then now are locking any third party themes. And to top it off, they are horrible at pushing updates/new software to their customers. If you buy a locked down phone, you'd get a couple of updates (I mean android versions not security updates) then you're stuck with an older version of android until you buy a new phone.
Just thought I'd throw this out there so you decide whether or not to update to pie. IF there is a way to block automatic updates.

Swift installer still works
Isn't theme issues (whatever level of issues) on Pie have to do with Google killing it and not the phone OEM? Google killed call recording on Pie. They seems to be wanting to kill more and more features we've been depending on that have nothing to do with Samsung.
i have nova launcher on pie with a note 9 with no problems

That's not what the developer of the app said on the latest update. They announced that on their telegram chat. Wings fonts and theme Galaxy did, too along with some other themers. But I sure hope that you're right, though.

The developers mentioned that "Samsung blocked overlays (or something like that) on pie.

Nova isn't a theme, it's a launcher and has nothing to do with this thread's subject. Lol

The main issue from what I was told about from a theme developer, also read it a bunch of times when Pixel got the update, overlays are not going to as they used to work before. With every upstate, Google is doing work to kill overlays... Put is just the latest

I hope that the devs will find a work around. I don't know what's in it for Google to kill overlays. Their pixel doesn't even support themes. Just leave people alone.

I think is has to do with Google slowly working towards making a dark theme systemwide, should be available on next version of Android. You can also expect even more difficulties using overlays on next Android.
Google is trying to tighten things up on Android. Do I like? No! But we can't say they are wrong to do it either.
I mean, look at how many Android devices are activated daily. Security lately is a much bigger concern for all companies and users. Blocking modifications and overlays is a way of making your phone more secure.
Thanks for sharing but I don't use third party themes anymore since most of them seems to drain the battery way too much
Why not just downgrade to Oreo 8.1 ? PIE-9 ONE UI Sucks at the moment.. Maybe 6 months or a years’ time it might get there and then ill upgrade!! Until then I’m sticking to 8.1 as it rocks!
im on pie and i change font by afont app in store and its work fine

I get the frustration, I think you may have some misplaced blame however. Right now I'm on Oreo Note 9, (SM-N960U1) root not possible, and wish I could stay on it, screw Pie and google. <-They are the ones you should be pointing at!
Hell, besides all the bugs on pie, they are the ones blocking us. Then there is that stupid apple-esque gestures, not to mention there terrible multitasking!! google has head-up you know what right now. (thank god Nova still works on pie)
Wait until you read about what Q is going to bring. Why in the hell is google going to help carriers by allowing SIM lock? nah, security or not, I've been saying for over two years now, google is not our friend. Sure I get it, revolutionary, and we all use them every day, but they are no longer a "good" company, but just after making money.
As far as Samsung locking down the bootloader, do you not think that the only way they can get our U.S. pile-o-crap carries to carry their phone, they have to? Hey I'm not sure about that, but I'd give it better the 70/30 that's why. Ya, you mentioned the same, and I agree, it's because of carriers.

Well, good for Samsung , Google and the carriers. This is going to be my last Samsung phone and through a carrier. It's either gonna be cheap mid-range phones or older iphone (like apple is any better lol)

I have got a n9 thats unrooted for my daily.. just picked up a lgv30 for my audio and rooting fixes.
I might as well just settle in for the long haul until international phones are rootable and working on Verizon.

So, I just spoke to the devs of swift installer and they confirmed that it will work on one UI. So, I hope that means substratum will work, too, maybe?

Phones are everywhere now and the competition is very hot in the market. Samsung and the carriers can shove their non rootable phones up there @#$#. Imagine having a non rootable Samsung phone and you wanted to keep it for a while, you're literally stuck on one firmware for as long as you have that phone knowing how horrible Samsung updates are.

I'm running it on pie. It works for apps no problem. But system UI, settings, and some galaxy apps are not working right now.

I think it's because of the dark mode on Pie. I hope they'll have a work around so we can theme the system with other colors beside black or white.
