[AT&T] 4.4.2 Update CHANGES - AT&T Galaxy Note 3 General

I'm starting this thread because the official update thread has become more of a "I can't update" and "this is how you get around that problem" than about the result of the update... which is not only fine but important. But I think it's just as important we discuss whatever changes are taking place in the new update once it successfully installs.
This thread is strictly for AT&T, and I encourage others to start one for other carriers as the bloatware and other crap will differ.
What I know:
- OTA Kit Kat update began rolling out on March 26th with the majority of updates available in the evening and then mass-available the following day (I updated on the 27th).
- If you have not rooted your phone, most people should have no problems with the OTA. If you are experiencing issues, go to this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=51457419
- Once the update is complete, a number of people (or everyone?) have reported (including myself) that touch does not work on boot. You can take out the S-pen, navigate as needed, and tell the phone to reboot. Once rebooted again, touch should be restored (verified on multiple reports).
- New, faster boot time.
- More responsive menus and motion.
- Revised status icons from the "colorful" Jelly Bean look to the monochromatic grey.
- Reports of hotspot being disabled (which means AT&T lied IMO when they sold me on the "hot spot is free now" line).
- Google Wallet does not allow click to pay (someone else will need to elaborate since I have never used Wallet)
- There is presently no root for the OTA version of KK (that I know of)
Please add to this, evaluate what bloatware remains, or was added, what works still, what doesn't that used to work on JB, and so on.
Also, someone with an S-view case please let us know if the S-view window functionality still works.

That's not a change. Google Wallet click-to-play has never worked on the AT&T Note 3.

FoxFi no longer enables the phone to serve as a free WiFi hotspot.

i have the official samsung branded flip cover and it works even better with the OTA update. It gives you more features when accepting calls. And overall more fluid.

That's ok, I stated that a number of people did, not everyone. Not sure why. It could be due to whatever software was previously installed. But for those that have the issue, there's the fix.
I wil be honest, I have an unofficial S-view cover. But I just yesterday got my otterbox and struggled to get it on, dust-free. *sigh*.... .I will do my duty now and remove it from the otterbox and reinstall the generic S-view cover. FWIW it LOOKS official... has "Galaxy Note 3" in the official logo style on the bottom and "Samsung" on the back, embossed into the vinyl. Cost me 9 bux shipped. Worked fine before, absolutely nothing wrong with it whatsoever.

Anyway, thanks for compiling the list!

Here is the Official Announcement from AT&T in regards to the KitKat upgrade for our Note 3's.
Android™ 4.4 KitKat® Now Available for Samsung Galaxy Note® 3 Customers

I don't trust the "official" announcement. They're gonna play up what they want, and fail to mention what they take from us. Reports from actual owners/users is what we're after here.

What features? I haven't noticed a difference from 4.3 and I also have the official S-View cover.

Got the Note 3 a month ago andI was very dissapointed that the Note 3 GPS voice was much worse that the Note 1. With the KK OTA upgrade, the GPS voice was changed and sounds better (although I think they put too much base/low tones in it).

Thats because it's the Samsung voice you're hearing, not the standard Android "voice". You can change this in Settings to the stock Android voice.

Could also install one of the IVONA TTS voices, those are pretty good in my experience

Tethering is working for me on KK through the system menu via FoxFi.

same here don't trust the announcement anymore and planning now to move to windows phone and getting nokia lumia 1520

I haven't updated (I won't give up Safestrap), but from what I've seen, almost all the "improvements" have been done to 4.3 by the devs here. I have a PIN coded lock screen - with a camera. My GPS works except when I turn out of the development. (In the entire city, and on 75 mile trips, that's the only place it glitches, and it recovers in about 3 seconds) ... The only real "improvements I see are a little bit more RAM, a little faster (faster than X-Note on 4.3?) and default text app (but since I run the Kit Kat app, and there's nothing else installed, that's a big yawn to me).
AFAIC, this isn't 4.4.2, it's 4.3.1, with a few things broken from what you guys are saying. It's a minor point upgrade, nothing like what I think most of us were anticipating all fall.

Can't side load any apps. The install button doesn't work.

Korean Galaxy S Missing Features and Laggy

I just got my Galaxy S about a week ago and I was very disappointed to see it didn't have Swype installed. I also noticed it was missing the SocialHub app which, doesn't really break my heart but was more of a "Huh..." moment. I do know the Korean version is slightly different since it includes the DMB Antenna for TV and whatnot but I was curious if anyone else knew about this and if there's a way I can get Swype on my phone. I'd also like to flash some new firmware on here because my Galaxy S is lagging quite a bit and at times is completely unresponsive in which I have to either attempt to power off or just remove the battery. I am using a task killer but I think it's more than just killing a few apps to solve my problems. It really doesn't seem to be nearly as snappy as I've seen in several videos. Hope someone can answer some of my concerns. Thanks!
Not sure if you tried this.
Try long press the text input field until the "input method" dialog box appears. Swype should be selectable from the box.
As for it being unresponsive, before trying to flash the new firmware, try to find a program call 'Advance task killer" and have it automatically kills useless tasks that continues to run in the background.
Other than that, if you are still unhappy, then flash away!

And if it does not appear for selection, go into setting, locale and see if Swype is there but unticked. If unticked, you should tick it before it can be eligible for selection.
Being laggy is a serious issue affecting all models, it seems. I'm too very disappointed with that, but I'm waiting for Froyo to come around to fix it.
I suggest you to flash JG3 or JG5 firmware. My SSGS seems faster than the original firmware after flashing. However, you should use Titanium backup to backup some Korean app that you like.
This European firmware has Swype kb, I can guarantee.

That's a fine way to brick the phone.
22.Can I flash an Asian ROM on my European device or vice versa?
Flashing should work without any problems. There are no known compatibility issues as of now. If any should arise, flashing back to Asian firmware is always possible.
Check your current ROM by dialing *#1234* to make sure you do not have a Korean variant of the phone (which is NOT compatible!).

@eaglesteve & @kcharng
I tried and checked both suggestions when I first got the phone because I really wanted to try Swype but didn't see the option. Only Samsung Keyboard existed. Now I have that and Swiftkey Beta since I installed it.
@kcharng
I do have Advance task killer installed and have been using it at times but for the most part it's pretty laggy. There's also the ever occuring GPS issue as well and I've had the camera mode sort of lock itself on my phone so I can't press the home button to exit. I'm hoping there's a Korean firmware that I can flash to fix it all or that Froyo will be my Godsend.
Thanks everyone for the helpful and kind replies btw. I was afraid I'd get flamed, call it first post jitters.

I also have the Korean Galaxy S. I had my Korean friend call up Samsung Service to deal with some of my issues. They didn't include Swype because of the double consonants in the Hangul, seems dumb that they didn't have an English only option. I've tried to use the apk from the I9000 but it just FC on me. The stock keyboard, really, really sucks on the Korean version, but right now I'm using Swiftkey which is really great for prediction but kind of frustrating otherwise. I've heard the Droid X has a great keyboard, so I'll try that soon.
I personally only manually kill apps with ATK, I don't let it background. At times I get laggy, but overall I find the device very responsive. FYI, if you didn't know they've put out two firmware updates already for the Korean version, connect to Kies if you haven't already.
Please reply or PM me if you have any questions. I wouldn't change the firmware, Korean version isn't easy to get international support for and also we will be the first to get Froyo, no reason to delay that! Also, I've noticed other features missing, like text-to-speech isn't as universal in our version.
Also you can try to root your phone.it is worth it just to run app like auto killer, cache cleaner, titanium backup.
Personally auto kilter is a much better app than ATK.

Is there any support here or elsewhere for the Korean Root? Then again, I think I'd wait at least 2-4 weeks until I get Froyo before rooting.

I think the biggest missing feature is tethering, but I guess that'll come with Froyo anyways and SKTelecom has advertised they'll move to unlimited data with free tethering in August to support this and other devices on plans 55,000 won and up.
*Edit* Tethering is not missing, I just didn't know the name of it, it's found in the same exact place as it is in the international version, wireless & network, mobile AP.

Swype
Not sure if you've already discovered this but..
I just upgraded my korean galaxy s firmware to DH09 with Samsung Kies and it included swype and a really good RAM clearer. Makes it a bit more snappy. Actually it may be too good because it can clear the widgets out to.
Not sure what else it has yet. Still playing with it. Actually someone just called me and an option to record the phone call was on the screen.... Can't say I'll ever use it but interesting.
If this is what Eclair 2.1 is like then Froyo 2.2 is going to be amazing

Hi I'm new to this site and new to my phone as well. I also have the korean version of the Galaxy S and was able to upgrade to DH09. Im sorry but do you mean when you say good RAM clearer? I noticed that my phone has 326 RAM and the I9000 has 576MB RAm. Is there a big difference on that? Also, can you tell me where I can find the radio? I only found the radio app in the TV widget. But if I try scanning channels, it can't find any. Is it because I'm in the Philippines?
Does your phone also limits sms characters to 80 letters? Coz mine does, and the standard number of characters in the Philippines is 160. But I just downloaded handcent sms and I was able to send more characters
Thanks in advance!
I'll try to update this thread since we don't get enough answers! I kind of think we should try to get an "official Korean FAQ" going, as this thread is inappropriately labeled for general questions and issues going forward. Also, I edited one of my previous posts bc I'm a noob who couldn't find the tethering settings, I believe at the time of writting it was available, though it could've come in a fw update I think I just overlooked it.

Hopefully your radio is an easy fix, I had a similar problem with the DMB until I figured out how to work it. I did a little test just now to make sure the functionality is essentially the same, and in my experience, - it is.
On the top right corner of the device (if you are looking at the screen) you will notice a little cutout break in the device, this is the DMB antenna. In my apartment it is the only way I can find radio stations, even having headphones in (the way normal phones sans tv antennas work to get stations) wont work without having the antenna up and out. Obviously an eye-sore and a bit of a design flaw, imho assuming it can try an alternate if both are present, however, I don't have much of a use for the radio so I can look past it and I don't even fully understand the need for it with the TV but Korean's are just used to having these janky antennas protruding from their phones. My iRiver mp3 player didn't even need a DMB antenna to pick up stations, it worked fine with headphones, I'm not really sure why they necessitated the need for the antenna.
In my test, the only radio stations that came up were in the national scan, but this is probably location dependent, try to scan metro and national to see if you can find what you are looking for, if nothing comes up there is a technical problem with frequencies being scanned or something else.
Regarding the memory, this is how all the SGS variants report their available memory. No SGS, AFAIK, reports the full amount of memory and there has been plenty of debate on how much memory the units actually shipped and last I read Samsung never released an official presser on the quantity. These questions might have been answered over time, by Samsung or teardowns, or what have you, but this isn't unique to the SHW-m110s.
Regarding the SMS letters. We have an 80 byte limit on our phones, this means 80 english characters and spaces and each Korean syllable (composed of upto 4 characters, or letters if you will) will count as 2 bytes. I'll assume this has something to do with the carrier restrictions on SMS/MMS. Handcent might help us get around this, but might not, if it's truly a carrier issue. In your case, have you tried just sending something with 100 characters? For us it's a "soft-limit", meaning we can type 150 characters but it requires to be switched over to MMS, but you might not find the same with your carrier. Do a test if you like, especially if you prefer the stock app it's worth a test.Try to send a bigger text and check online to see how they charged you. In my case it automatically switches to MMS and they are treated the same for cost/phone plan purposes so it makes no difference to me (with the exception of having to switch 3G on when I have it disabled, ugh). With my previous dumbphone my long text messages would actually be sent as 2 text messages, another thing you should check to make sure isn't an issue to you (I think handcent would be able to get around this, again, I think this is a Korean carrier limit but it doesn't change our pricing...as a matter of fact, if handcent sent 2 50 character messages it would be more "expensive" if we go over our limit than if we sent 1 100 character MMS.
Hope that helps!

Yeah, I did discover that, also the latest firmware gives faster 3G data connections. If you are ever wondering what is going on with the FW upgrade go to naver and search "갤럭시s ____" fill the blank in with the updated FW build. Then translate the results from the page you've found.
Regarding Swype specifically, they gave us an old build, which is a bit disappointing. The latest/greatest has voice input, amongst other things. Oh well, there is always tomorrow.

It seems that the Korean government is currently blocking this for competition reasons. This really pisses me off because, first, at least last year KT was growing faster than SK which means SK should be given every opportunity to make changes. Second, and more importantly, one of the president's platforms was decreasing the price of wireless services, this move would have to be followed by a similar move by KT if they want to be competitive so we'd all have cheaper options for massive data. I'm about 70% sure I'll write him a letter personally, I just think it'll be thrown in the trash because a 6 year old could probably articulate a better argument in Korean than me, of course I could have someone do the translating but I actually want them to be my words and it to be that much more authentic.
Hi,
Yes I do think we should have our own thread. It will be good in sharing things we find out about our phone. Our country doesn't support DMB yet that's the reason why I think the Radio or TV is not working. I found a link giving all the apk files and I tried copying it to my phone. But still it won't work. I guess I really won't be able to make it work. I found the list of all the apps from android forums.
I tried installing Handcent SMS and I was able to address the 80characters problem. Now I can send up to 160 characters per message.
I'm excited to see what Froyo can do for our phone.

Yeah, I'll write something up and post a new thread within a week. I'll try to get it translated to Korean because at least a few prominent hackers in Korea visit so if they can share their knowledge in either language at least we can start to ask questions a bit easier and in a setting we are more comfortable. Plus, if we get their devs in house a bit more then the rest of the GS community can learn more from them.
Anywho, I'm glad you replied because I have a question. What is the cellular radio frequencies and technologies you use in the Philippines. I want to know more about the world comparability of this phone, so any info you have on the radio tech in your area and what bands this can access would be great.

The AT&T model is not rooted yet. The multiwindow feature works great. There is no specific forum for the AT&T model so we discuss it here. I highly recommend picking it up if you can. I'm absolutely in love with mine. It'll be even more awesome once they get it upgraded to Android 4.2.
I too purchased the AT&T Note 8. On the morning it became available actually. I too love the Note 8 and highly recommend it. Especially so with the bundle deal that brings the price down to $199.
That said I have found a few issues that are in need of fixing. Firstly, of course, is the ability to root so one can use Titanium Backup to debloat. But also many have found that the screen freezes momentarily randomly. If you want to use it to play games you will be disappointed. Also, every time you power up (boot up) the current version of the software resets all factory defaults so that 3rd. party keyboards for example are deselected and you have to manually select them as default. I personally have also found that the Samsung calendar as well as google calendar doesn't automatically sync with your Samsung and/or your Google accounts, you have to do this manually as well.
these are all reasons that I bought the wifi version; we already have root, there are custom roms/kernels, custom recovery, and since there is wifi almost everywhere, and where there isn't, I can tether to my Note2, I didnt see any reason to give ATT another dime of my $$$$
hope you guys get root/custom recovery soon, because a tweaked, debloated,OC'd Note 8.0 is nothing but fun!

I hear you. However, some of us who were buying new phones anyway the AT&T bundle deal pricing of $199 for the Note 8 as opposed to the $499 retail made sense. Yes, I would liked to have root already but I will live with the wait in light of the initial cost savings. Now when can I get a Note 3????
not sure where you heard the wifi was 499; I got mine for 350 at Best buy, and I think there are places selling at 325...
but yeah, 199 is a nice price....
Note 3 is a ways away, i think!
I'm sure you'll have root soon; maybe send a pm to Chainfire, and see if he is working on it yet...

He meant the AT&T model goes for $499 full retail.

I also find that Chrome has problems. I don't know if it's a Chrome issue or a ROM issue but Chrome seems to not get click placement right when tapping on the screen, especially when using the pen. You have to tap below a link to get it to actually fire. Very annoying. Even with the brand new Chrome 28 release a day ago, it still does this. I'm using the stock browser until this gets resolved.

Is almost certainly a Chrome issue. Chrome 26 works fine. The problem was introduced in Chrome 27. I'm sure it'll get fixed eventually. In the meantime I'm just using the stock browser. I didn't see it as a big enough issue to do something drastic like taking it back.

Last night's update of Chrome Beta (their second patch for this issue) fixed the problem for me. It will likely be a number of weeks before the patch makes it to the stable Chrome release.

Yeah I just saw that. Thank God they fixed it! I want to use Chrome rather than the stock browser. I hate that sites I open on the Note 8.0 don't get synced to my other devices. haha

Okay, I thought I was either drunk or crazy. I swore Chrome was registering wrong clicks and it would eventually just stop with the input all together. What a terrible bug - I too was forced to use the stock browser. Glad it's fixed in the latest release. Let's hope that makes it into the Play store sooner rather than later.

Official Lollipop Update for NotePro 12.2

No more waiting, guys! It is here.
Firmware versions for Italy, Switzerland, Luxemburg AND UNITED ARAB EMIRATES released! More to come. Stay it touch: http://samsung-updates.com/device/?id=SM-P905
Interesting. On the Note 3 Italy was the first EU region country to receive 5.0, and now again on the NotePro....
Oh well. I'll wait for a while if you don't mind, too many problems with Lollipop on the Note 3 for my taste. (Same hardware.)
Well Spotted!
This is excellent news, thanks for finding it! The lack of any sort of communication on this from Samsung has been disappointing to say the least. The latest version of Touchwiz is miles better, I've really been looking forward to seeing it on the Note Pro.
Hope the P900 also receive the LP update in next few days
send from my amazing NotePro via Tapatalk
Great news but I'll also wait since lollipop on my note 3 was horrible. Didn't work at all with my pebble so that I went back to 4.4.
Does the use of external SD cards work on 5.02?

The same problems that plague Lollipop everywhere. Bluetooth connectivity issues, WiFi connectivity issues, memory leaks, errors on Contacts and Camera, Deamon battery leaks...
I haven't updated my Note 3 yet. (Erm, since Februari 2014. NB7 works flawlessly, I'm keeping it.) But I handle all Samsung-related claims for one of the largest providers, and Lollipop sings the same tune on all devices.
Add to that the inherit issues known to these devices, such as screen flickering, reboots, bluescreens, and I'm a little hesitant to mess with the firmware. Seeing as how mine hasn't shown any of those issues, which seems to be a rarity here on these boards.

And that's because you have good quality international devices (P905 / P9005).
I haven't got any problems with my devices, even though both are rooted, debloated by frozing apps and got Xposed Framework with many modules.
Oh yeah, and I did root them both with Towelroot so Knox Warranty is 0x0 and I am also keeping them running KitKat (mostly because Lollipop got too much white colors, and I don't like that).
@ShadowLea, if there is anything you need root for, go for it!
Sorry for shooting off-topic so bad
Having had a number of Samsung devices I'd advise to never upgrade the firmware because they always wreck it and it's not like you can easily go back without tripping knox or whatever. 4.4.2 is doing the job nicely for me and like ShadowLea my Note pro has exhibited no problems other than the less responsive screen whilst charging but that'sa known issue on loads of Samsung devices (and others).
I hope it'll be available for P900 soon too
I'll wait. Pretty sure that lots of shortcuts (e.g. pulling down the notification bar etc.) won't work anymore on Lolliflop.

Something similar has been done, but you need to exclude the bootloader and modem files, and do so at your own risk. See posts 5,6,7,and 8 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/gal...p905-update-to-4-4-2-p905xxuaob1-mar-t3066259

Verizon website listed this...see below
Verizon Wireless is pleased to announce a software update for your device. This software update has been tested to optimize device performance, resolve known issues and apply the latest security patches.
Software Version: MMB29M.N910VVRU2CPF3
The current software update gives you the most up to date Android™ security patch on your device.
Receiving this update now, its automatic and I can't seem to stop it easily.
I'll report what I find. I unrooted and went default yesterday, on retail 6.0.1. Gonna sell my note and get Google Fi soon.

I haven't found a tutorial on downgrading to 5.1.1 from 6.0.1. Is there a safe way to do it?

Not sure what you mean by "safe" but typically you just use Odin to flash full stock 5.1.1, do a factory reset in stock recovery afterwards and you're done.

I'm impressed Verizon is actually trying to keep up with the security updates on this device. BUT, i dont think they have a choice because this device is probably more used then the Note5 .

Seems to have fixed some lag, heat , and battery drain issues I was having. Auto brightness is still borked. Still have to turn the brightness down manually in a dark room, and up to max outside.

I've heard a lot of mixed reviews of Google Fi. Which phone are you going to go with? I've thought about replacing my Note 4 DE with the Moto X Pure when they run it on sale again (was $319 a few days ago). But the Droid Z Force also looks nice.

Not really the place to discuss it so I'll keep it brief.
My girlfriend has a Nexus 5X. The phone is amazing, updates are quick and common. It operates perfectly on marshmallow with no noticeable issues. We live in bum**** and she still gets service wifi calling and texting is fine, and no contracts. We pay about 42 a month for hers with insurance.
Well one thing I noticed (not sure if it was this update or the last one) is that when you pick an application to use (like browser) it becomes the default. With the old OS it would ask you to use just once or make it the default. Arrgggg I prefer to pick the application as needed and not make it the actual default.

The MM update made this change to default app handling. I liked the old way too. Now if I want to change the default app I have to remember which app was set as default before I can make the change. Sometimes remembering which app was set as default isn't easy to do.
Deleted. Think was in wrong thread.
Been a long time sense I've posted anything in this forum.
I just went back to the Note 4 and did the MM update and have noticed a heavy draw on the battery compared to LP. Am wondering if letting it did cycle through a few time might correct the battery drain. Was on an iPhone for awhile, but for personal reasons came back android. Has anybody tried that yet. Have been temped to hard reset and start fresh to see if it fixes it.
This update has increased the battery draw on mine and it is running HOT! Need help.

T-mobile ATE6 update really helped with autofocus issues! Check it out

So we all know the s20 series has had problems with auto focus especially in the ultra that one was really jacked up. I have the regular galaxy s20 and also have autofocus problems. I have done numerous things to try to make it better I even did a full reset which I normally never do because I would just clear cache and data of said app and it would clear things up. but not this time autofocus was hit or miss for sure and problematic. And for a $1,000 device this Just is not right and don't cut it for me... shoot my old one plus seven pro had better autofocus! and that thing was like 600 bucks. Anyway I am pleased to say that with this new update it is pretty much 100% autofocus is much faster, actually really fast. and 10 out of 10 for me focused instantly. hopefully I don't get in trouble for this if I have to take it down mods just let me know.

Auto update hasn't hit the US. Maybe we'll see it combined with a June security
update soon.
Edit: I see it is hitting T-mobile and other US carriers this morning, but still with May security patch. US unlocked got ATD1 at the beginning of the month, not sure if T-mobile ever got that one, or just skipped straight to ATE6.

This just came in, installing now, is very fast, the fingerprint is very fast, this update size is 462 mb For the S20 Ultra on T Mobile G988U
Definitely noticing better auto focus after the update.
Now I'm looking forward to Samsung's promised update to allow native gestures to be used on 3rd party launchers. Wish I weren't so anal about small quirks of the gestures that FNG has but the native gestures are the best IMO.
Man, I hate this. I'm on an unlocked s20 ultra and tmobile somehow pushed it out before Samsung does.
Yep def improved some things with this update....things i have found are the auto focus is blazing fast now and seems like fingerprint is a tad quicker....also idk if its me or what but sound seems to have improved coming out of the speakers for sure
After T-Mobile ATE6, my Samsung Keyboard forcloses. Anyone having this issue? I had to use voice command to download GBoard from Playstore because I wasn't able to type anything at all. Matter fact, the keyboard itself doesn't pop up. I've also wiped cache and deleted data through apps. Galaxy store says it's version 5.0.21.0

Type this in adb connected to s20 ultra while on home screen. I use nova launcher and native gesture at the same time. You'll have to do it again if you change the navigation type in settings or if you restart the device.

At least for the Ultra, an easy way to know they aren't the same: the current ATD1 software on the unlocked phone doesn't have the new macro prompt. ATD1 has been out for a month, the new improvements in ATE6 just surfaced in the past week. But ATD1 did roll out with the May security update already, I expect unlocked will get the improvements of ATE6 with June security in a week or so.
