WiFi Performance Issues - LG V20 Questions & Answers

I am beginning to wonder if this is a problem with the Snapdragon 820 chipset. My and my wife's Note 7s exhibited the same behavior. Now, our v20s are doing it as well. Here is the problem:
This is my speed immediately after rebooting my phone. The same applies to hers. This is the service I have. It is the speed I get on my desktop, laptop, my daughter's GS5, and I used to get on my old note 4.

After the v20 has been connected for a few minutes, and until reboot, THIS is the speed I get:
Both of these were ran from the same position relative to my router.
The Note 7, which my wife and I both had two of before getting the v20, shares the same chipset and did the exact same thing. A few things of note: I did have a Netgear R6400 AC router until a couple of weeks ago. It was a great router and always delivered my full speed to my devices, except the Note 7 and v20. I recently upgraded my router to a Netgear Nighthawk x10.
https://www.netgear.com/landings/ad7200/?cid=wmt_netgear_organic
I did this partially to rule out an issue with the R6400, and because my parents needed a new router so this gave me an excuse with my wife to spend 500 bucks on the router I wanted. The point is, the issue is not the router. This behavior only occurs in our v20s. One would think that the newest flagship phone would play nicely with a new flagship router.
Why do I get full speed only for about 3 minutes after a reboot? Could it be a problem with the congestion algorithm? This has been driving me nuts since we "upgraded" from our Note 4s to the 7s back in August. Does anyone else have similar issues?

LOTS of variables to deal with here man. To demonstrate, what was packet loss, software version, time of day, isp, etc. These are just a few of the standard ones. Claiming poor wifi performance on the 820 with only 2 spedtest charts gives us next to no info on your problem.

Packet loss is 0% both instances. Software version: Android 7.0, I figured that since this is a v20 forum, that went without saying. Time of day - is on the screenshots. ISP = TWC, 300/20. If you read my post, you'll see I can duplicate this behavior all day every day, on two separate devices: my v20, and my wife's v20. Same behavior on the note 7s we had. Our note 4s which we had prior to the note 7s got great speed all the time. My desktop, laptop, daughter's Galaxy s5, my buddies Galaxy Note 5, ALL get excellent speed all the time.

You cant compare what a desktop and a laptop gets to your phone speeds. Ever think its speed test app itself? I had a note 7 and the v20. When I connected to my works Wi-Fi and run speedtests they was virtually the same. It could be your provider having issues. How many devices are connected to your router when testing the speeds. You do know those tests are suppose to be taken with a grain of salt. Go to a public Wi-Fi spot like McDonald's and test the speeds on the v20 and note 7. I doubt there's anything wrong with the phones.
Dude if you get 110 mbps on your phone then that's more than enough and trying to get the full 330 mbps is just overkill lol
Sent from my LG-H910 using Tapatalk

Same readings when data connection is off, and only wifi is enabled on the v20? And yes there are already different software updates even though they're claiming only security fixes...

I've noticed some weird WiFi performance as well. Specifically a delay in initial connections. If I load a web page it takes a second or two to actually begin loading. I can't say for sure it's the phone yet, though. It may be my router. However I do feel like the WiFi is snappier after initial boot of phone compared to later on. I'll try and post some tests myself.

I absolutely can compare desktop, laptop, and phone - I just did. Did you even read my OP? Both of those speed tests ARE from my v20. If an over 2 year old device (note 4) gets better, faster wifi than a 2 month old device, something is wrong. The same number of devices are connected in the first test as in the 2nd. Furthermore, my router is Netgears newest flagship, connectivity is a non issue. None of this explains why, for the first couple of minutes after reboot I get the speeds I expect, then after a few minutes, I get what is shown in the 2nd result until I reboot again. 4 devices exhibited this behavior, the only thing they have in common is the chipset. It is not an issue with my provider, as I can immediately get full speed on any device in my home that is NOT a v20. As far as your assertion that these tests should be taken with a grain of salt: they are consistent. Not only the Speedtest app, but other ones as well. If I can reproduce the results without fail across several devices and multiple apps, to me that is a pretty strong indicator that something is off.
Lastly, if 300 mb/s is overkill, then why is gigabit Internet even a thing? These devices are (supposed to be) capable of making use of today's higher speeds.
Sent from my LG-H918 using XDA-Developers mobile app

yeah I've got some issues too. upon reboot it's definitely faster.

This is an absolute issue. I have both my Note 7 and V20 (just bought it to replace my Note) hooked up to my Gigabit internet. WiFi drops like a sack of potatoes after a restart on the LG. My note is still crusing along. Wtf

I actually made a post about this on reddit and many, many, people are saying the same thing...

you guys are lucky... never passed 30/20 on my LGV10 and it looks to be the same with the LGV20 for me... definitely should be capable of 300/30 here.

Samsung's mobile data sucks

Ive owned several samsung models including the i9100,i777 and i9300.
Mobile data sucks compared to my 4s. Where i get 3g on iphone i get edge on s3.
The most annoying thing sometimes you have full signal, open a website and there is like a 15 second hang. Tried different modems, fast dormancy settings and nothing seems to work. Its very annoying tbh.

What the? I get the complete opposite! 4S on Vodafone UK along with most of the iPhones before it (3GS fared better) have given me some of the worst data and signal reliability I've ever experienced. Nokia's still the champ, though the S3's holding up well so far too.

My wife and i also get this in the UK, on two different networks. I've only experienced this on the S3, not the Note, Tab or S2 though.
I hope for a fix soon.
Really strange since I experienced the opposite when I upgrade from S2 to S3. Used to get like 1-1.5 down and 0.1 up, now I get like 2+ down and .5 up.
For reference: 1010 HK
Rom: WanamLite v 1.4
My results may not be relevant being from Australia but I was getting about 4-5Mbs with my HTC sensation and coming to the S3 i'm averaging 5.5-7.5Mbs. Still not as great as my work colleagues Galaxy Nexus who almost always pulls 1Mbs more when doing a speed test at the same time.

Erm... 4-5Mbs is better than 1Mbs...
He says "1Mbit more" so it's 4+1 to 5+1 = 5-6 Mbit/s =)

Please verify if both mobile phones are connected to the same antenna.
The S3 is blazing fast (compared to iPhones), however I've had the same issue as you.
The reason was that my provider kept (and still keeps trying) to push APN settings with a stupid HTTP-proxy which is completely overloaded and half of the time breaks the connection anyway.
Just remove the proxy IP (if any) from the APN settings, verify it's gone and try again.
If you have an account to paid VPN, you can also try this as it should give the same accelerated speed.
Yeah carrier tries to push settings on this phone.
I find this very annoying, ehere can i check what you say?

As far as carriers go, you get what you pay for. Get a cheaper carrier, most likely you'll notice it.
My SGS3 got better reception than iPhone 4s had and on sgs3 i dont have and failed calls, which I cant say for iPhone 4s (same network provider). Also sgs3 got better Wlan reception.

What's wrong with my WiFi

So, I'm getting horrible WiFi speeds on my Nexus 7. Even though the "connection speed" looks like it should be faster than my One X, the Nexus 7 lags waaaay behind.
Both devices are connected to my home WiFi network, and both speed tests were done with the same server, at approximately the same time. Both devices are running CM10 nightlys (with the Nexus 7 being Fitsnugly's Kang). Soooooo... what's the deal? Should I post this in the JellyBro thread?
This is my desktop computer, on a wired connection, just to show what my ISP is capable of.

OK, I see that the "connection speed" changes, but with the devices side by side, the N7 always shows a better signal quality and higher "connection speed", yet always tests lower. And I'm not just complaining about a speedtest... the whole reason I started looking into this is because I couldn't get through 2 minutes of HD YouTube without 30 seconds of buffering
Thanks again,
Billy

I don't have a solution, but I am looking for an answer to this question as well. I've had a similar experience with excessive buffering on YouTube videos that I don't have with any of my other devices.
Overall the download speed and browsing speed of the N7 seems fine, but it just constantly buffers sometimes for YouTube videos.

I get similar speeds on my Nexus 7 (WiFi) and my Desktop (Ethernet). Nexus 7 scores a bit higher on upload speeds though...
I'm using franco.Kernel r5 with the updated WiFi driver. To anyone with WiFi issues, what kernel are you running?
WiFi speed/connection issues are notoriously difficult to pin down, there are too many variables.
Try a few WiFi analysers on Play. Try connecting on different channels.

I was running stock kernel. Then I installed PA and used whatever the default cyanogenmod kernel is. I just switched to trinity. I'm not really plagued with problems or anything like that. I just occasionally have what seems like excessive buffering on short YouTube videos. I'm going to see if trinity affects it at all over the next few days.

Yeah, who knows why they took the "buffering options" out of the settings menu for the Nexus 7, but that seems like a dumb move to me! I tried copying the apk from my phone (which has buffering options) over to my Nexus 7, but it didn't change anything... it must be doing it based on the class of device or something. Paul O'Brien was able to re-enable it, but I haven't looked into how he did it.

Yeah, I agree, except that I'm able to make the vast majority of the variables the same between the two devices. I've got two devices, same WiFi, same channel, same physical location, same interferance, same rom... as far as I can tell, the only differences are drivers/hidden settings and hardware/antennas. Since most people don't have this problem, I feel like it's gotta be software/drivers/hidden settings, right?
Does anybody know how I can tell what protocol the tablet is connect with (802.11A/B/G/N)?
Thanks all!

If most people don't have 'this problem' but everyone else has the same software and drivers then it's unlikely to be either the software or the drivers and more likely to be either hardware or environmental issues.

I'm not trying to be argumentative, but environmental issues are ruled out with the One X, sitting right next to the Nexus 7, performing flawlessly, and software is a whole helluva lot easier to modify/corrupt than hardware. I guess I should start with a full wipe and go from there... I was just hoping to get some new ideas (and I DO appreciate your response!).

[Q] Samsung Galaxy Note 3 & Nexus 5 Wi-Fi speeds comparison. Note 3 has issues.

See link http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w-XvFPwTAGA where I show nexus 5 on same Wi-Fi and speed test server has excellent speeds on Wi-Fi but note 3 often has issues on same Wi-Fi but my s4 works fine on same Wi-Fi. Hope this issue gets sorted with update. Nexus 5 is 10 times faster sometimes as shown in video and note 3 sometimes had connectivity issues even with speed test! My s4 is fine on same Wi-Fi. YouTube always buffers HD and have to switch to 3g infection often. But even 3g and bluetooth connection is rubbish in comparison to my s4. Wondering if no updates to sorry this situation whether to chase Vodafone for refund. I like the note 3 buy the data speeds are rubbish as shown on my YouTube upload. Sometimes good but almost always rubbish.
Any suggestions please? I like the note 3 otherwise and if sorted would like to keep the device.

get 40mbps sometimes on the nexus 5 as shown in video but often struggle even maintaining connection with N3. have tweeted samsung and will wait a few days and if isnt sorted then will seek full refund under the sale of goods act Uk as this device isnt fit for the purpose as even 4y old devices like the HTc desire had better wifi connections and speeds than the N3. My s4 is great though on same network. The N3 struggles with wifi with every network i have tried and all networks give the unstable connection or network error warnings and even speedtests fail often to complete. tried the dialer test menu for switching off wifi power saving and makes no difference, also tried switching off mobile data to see if that makes a difference but no difference at all. Looks like the device keeps cycling wifi on and off all the times, one second i get 20mbps next second the connection is gone, youtube buffering all the times websites load slow, getting fed up of this expensicve device. havent used such a buggy device in a long while. streaming youtube is my daily use case scenario and this wifi issue is making that untenable.
uploads work great on the N3 and get 17mbps upload speeds but downloads struggles often at 2mbps or 0.5mbps as shown in the video

Found the solution to the samsung galaxy note 3 wifi issues https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MjL8JbSQCvw&
It is **** software from samsung but can get around via disabling default settings as mentioned in the video and am getting 52 mbps now ? Earlier was struggling to view hd youtube videos as always buffering and cut outs and now blistering speeds ?
Disabled that AGES ago. It helps with some issues but not other issues that persist.
Best test is to download from LAN. AKA from a desktop folder that's been shared on the network.
did you fix it?
hey guys do you have any solution to this?
i have the same problem..my speed on wi-fi is just 1.5 to 3 Mbps
I don't find any problem using my Note 3 SM-N9005 on wi fi.
However I always use 5Ghz band at home as this gives higher throughput.

Information!
OOKLA SPEEDTEST shows since the KitKat 4.4.2 Update wrong results.
The Wi-Fi speed is not around 5 Mbits as shown!!
Check your speed with other Apps and you will see it.
Also try this:
Set GPS ON and check your Wi-Fi speed again with OOKLA SPEEDTEST.
Maybe you will get the same good Speed back.

Sitecom Access Point set to channels 3 and 11, 2.4Ghz
Might be worth mentioning I have it set to static, and not dhcp.
That said, I haven't had any of the connectivity issues people mention from day 1.....
I had issues from the day one, but after I updated my router firmware (it was somehow set not to update), my Note 3 runs about 23 Mbs on 25Mbs network, download (don't care about upload since I don't do it often), pretty solid considering I have 3-5 other devices hooked up to it.

WiFi problems? Potential easy solution

I've been having some issues with Wi-Fi, that as others have described manifest specifically when your hand is holding the device at the bottom in portrait mode (ie. Near the stylus).
My solution has been to hold the device "upside-down". Fortunately the shield tablet let's you have 180 degree rotation. Now that I use that as my default portrait orientation, i'm becoming more used to it. Additionally, the charging port is on the bottom, which I prefer. The button location I'm still getting used to, but I can deal.
Just wanted to share this simple change that for me has made this awesome tablet much more functional.
Heh, I've been doing this as well. No particular problems with WiFi here per se, but doing this I get better signal strength which offends my OCD less.
Oh please, that is not a solution at all. It's a ghetto ass workaround.
Just wait until you accidentally hold the tablet "the wrong way" after switching from landscape mode. It's totally ridiculous that you have to pay attention to what orientation you hold it, and actually have to hold the thing upside down to get it to work at all.
This tablet is total garbage that was never even tested. Companies that push this garbage on you don't deserve for users to put up with half assed workarounds. They deserve to have every single sale returned for a refund.
This tablet is a corvette motor inside a Ford pinto. But it's still just a powerful piece of crap that self destructs.
Seattle truth, This community, in the many years I have followed it, is generally polite and helpful. Your comment is the opposite of that. I wanted to share something that maybe is obvious or simple, but nonetheless effective for my needs.

I've never has any Wi-Fi issues related to the connection once I'm connected.. The issue with the Wi-Fi had to do with the k1 chip set and how it sleeps. I don't know what these guys are talking about with having signal issues while using it. I get great Wi-Fi signal on this tablet.

If it is the same seattletruth from the NVidia Forums he returned his tablet very early on, but is committed to educating folks about the shortcomings of the product.
Update: g1xx3r beat me to it...
Hm, just got my Shield Tablet. Yes, I have inconsistent Wi-Fi connection.
I haven't changed my router for quite some time and used it with Nexus 7, Note 8, Samsung Note 10.1 and iPad Air - no problem.
It's got to be this tablet, or a batch of it given some are not having this problem.
I have the same issues with mine and yes, the router connects to ALL my other devices fine. I go into the play store and I also can't watch the video up top for the app preview. Youtube app works fine. I have tried everything and even put the tablet to Static. I have had alot of tablets and this is the first one I am having this much problems with. I hope there is an update soon or at least a normal fix.
Thanks bro! This does work great!

Fixed it real quick by returning to Best Buy. Weak wifi on a wifi centric device IMO is asinine and holding upside down does not fix all of the issue. Silly to have to do as well.
My 3DS has stronger 2.4 wifi. That is beyond sad. Also have the Shield 1 that has much better wifi.
The crack issue and 95C core temp also is a concern. The device has a hotter running chip the Shield 1, but no ventilation or fan.
I posted this in the Nvidia forum as well.
I've tested the wifi on my tablet in a bunch of different ways using ookla speed test and general chrome browsing. I have come to pretty much the same conclusion most people in here have. The wifi is weaker than most other wifi devices but this will not be noticed in an ideal wifi setup. For folks with less than ideal wifi setups, they are affected more.
There are a few caveats to my test: I am not using gamestream, so I can not comment on that. And I have such low wifi speed from my ISP (30mbps), that I can not test 5ghz top download speeds vs 2.4ghz top download speeds (because they both easily top out at 30mbps).
I want to go over the things that have improved my wifi performance.
1: Switching to 2.4ghz wifi. This has made the biggest difference for me. Paul Deemer was saying that not using 5ghz wifi is the best for the ST and I agree. I will switch to 5ghz when I gamestream and switch it back to 2.4ghz when I'm done gamestreaming (when I finally get my gaming PC back next month).
If you do need to use 5ghz wifi, see below for other improvements.
2: Using a wifi analyzer app to set my wifi channels up. My apple router is supposed to do this automatically, but when I used the wifi analyzer app I noticed that my channels were crowded.
I set my 2.4ghz wifi channel to an empty channel and I got a full bar more wifi strength in my living room. I set my 5ghz wifi to the highest channel I possibly could (I think 160) and I got a full bar more wifi strength in my living room as well.
3: Avoiding the wifi antenna. This only affects 5ghz wifi for me. When I use 2.4ghz this issue goes away.
http://youtu.be/7v3AR6gZNYQ
4: Using a cover. The cover seems to keep you hand from interfering with the wifi antenna. This is not a total fix, but it does help. Just like in this video at 6:30.
Wifi Death Grip Samsung Galaxy S4 Workaround: http://youtu.be/ySIUuMAvduM
5: Moving your router. If you're having wifi issues you could always try moving your router. I will be moving my router to my living room where I eventually will be gamestreaming.
All of this stuff has been talked about before in this thread and others. I just hope to help anyone out who is still having wifi issues.
I use Netspot app to analyze my Wi-Fi Coverage. You need just a few clicks to load your home plan or area map and start a network site survey

T-Mobile bad reception and network speeds, anyone else post here

I just received 2 of my Note 4's yesterday for my family plan. Both of us can confirm spotty service and slow download speeds to the point that many apps were saying check your internet connection. I was using the Note 3 in the exact same locations yesterday and had no issues. Anyone else noticing this? Maybe a software update is needed
I have not received (and will not now that it's rooted) the new Samsung update and I don't believe T-Mobile has rolled anything out yet. The phone is spectacular though.....it sounds crazy but I can actually see a difference in the Note 4 and Note 3 screens. The 4 is easier on my eyes. Sorry to get off topic!
The first few hours I was experiencing slow download speed from the Playstore so I decided to download everything via wifi left it there charging came back did a few test and it seems back to normal speed.
About the screen is not much of a difference in my opinion but there is a difference especially when reading online.

You sure you didn't get throttled?
NOTE 4
I have experienced some slow speeds also and lag as well.
atlprettygirl2145 I'm having the exact same issue as u described. 4g works just fine but 4g lte is a no go. I'm also located in Atlanta.

Definitely not throttled.....it's the phone. I also noticed the lag but i was hoping it was just me. It's good that we are all noticing because that means they need a fix but it's bad becsuse, well, they really need a fix.

Picking mine up tomorrow at 9 will report back
NOTE 4
I'm opposite from you guys. My new note 4 has better reception and faster internet than my note 3.
Oh man, hope it's not the case with my note 4. My s5 gets the best reception I've had with any phone but I want a bigger screen. Should find out tomorrow.
Someone said there was an update already out for the new note 4. I saw it a couple threads back
I am crossing my fingers for all of you guys!
First 4-5 hours after setting up while it was syncing, d/l everything, configuring the new sim, etc, the whole works was a bit slow, but the 2nd day, it's been much better than my note 3. I'm happy so far.
Getting better Wifi and LTE speeds then my S5 and OnePlus One. Getting better SD card trasfer speeds too.
Are you guys using the new micro sim card that came with the phone
I am. Figured they included it for a reason. I probably don't know any better.

Hopefully it is just an issue with the towers in the Atlanta area then, I was being hopeful of that but I had the note 3 previous to the note 4 and it didn't have these issues

Home WiFi AC @5ghz is consistent with my prior speeds with the note3.
4G LTE speeds also consistent with my area coverage. Fastest 2 were done outdoors while the other 2 were done indoors.
Apparently no problems here with WiFi and LTE. I'm using the new sim card that came in the box and did nothing with apn settings.

I'm getting better signal, but very slow data speeds! Worst than my non-lte s3.
I can also confirm that Atlanta is having serious lte issues. I drove for 10 miles without lte in areas that just days ago were were blazing with lte. Talked to tmobile, and it seems like it got significantly worse. Looks like magenta may be regressing.
