WiFi problems? Potential easy solution - Shield Tablet General

I've been having some issues with Wi-Fi, that as others have described manifest specifically when your hand is holding the device at the bottom in portrait mode (ie. Near the stylus).
My solution has been to hold the device "upside-down". Fortunately the shield tablet let's you have 180 degree rotation. Now that I use that as my default portrait orientation, i'm becoming more used to it. Additionally, the charging port is on the bottom, which I prefer. The button location I'm still getting used to, but I can deal.
Just wanted to share this simple change that for me has made this awesome tablet much more functional.

Heh, I've been doing this as well. No particular problems with WiFi here per se, but doing this I get better signal strength which offends my OCD less.

Oh please, that is not a solution at all. It's a ghetto ass workaround.
Just wait until you accidentally hold the tablet "the wrong way" after switching from landscape mode. It's totally ridiculous that you have to pay attention to what orientation you hold it, and actually have to hold the thing upside down to get it to work at all.
This tablet is total garbage that was never even tested. Companies that push this garbage on you don't deserve for users to put up with half assed workarounds. They deserve to have every single sale returned for a refund.
This tablet is a corvette motor inside a Ford pinto. But it's still just a powerful piece of crap that self destructs.

Seattle truth, This community, in the many years I have followed it, is generally polite and helpful. Your comment is the opposite of that. I wanted to share something that maybe is obvious or simple, but nonetheless effective for my needs.

I've never has any Wi-Fi issues related to the connection once I'm connected.. The issue with the Wi-Fi had to do with the k1 chip set and how it sleeps. I don't know what these guys are talking about with having signal issues while using it. I get great Wi-Fi signal on this tablet.

If it is the same seattletruth from the NVidia Forums he returned his tablet very early on, but is committed to educating folks about the shortcomings of the product.
Update: g1xx3r beat me to it...

Hm, just got my Shield Tablet. Yes, I have inconsistent Wi-Fi connection.
I haven't changed my router for quite some time and used it with Nexus 7, Note 8, Samsung Note 10.1 and iPad Air - no problem.
It's got to be this tablet, or a batch of it given some are not having this problem.

I have the same issues with mine and yes, the router connects to ALL my other devices fine. I go into the play store and I also can't watch the video up top for the app preview. Youtube app works fine. I have tried everything and even put the tablet to Static. I have had alot of tablets and this is the first one I am having this much problems with. I hope there is an update soon or at least a normal fix.

Thanks bro! This does work great!

Fixed it real quick by returning to Best Buy. Weak wifi on a wifi centric device IMO is asinine and holding upside down does not fix all of the issue. Silly to have to do as well.
My 3DS has stronger 2.4 wifi. That is beyond sad. Also have the Shield 1 that has much better wifi.
The crack issue and 95C core temp also is a concern. The device has a hotter running chip the Shield 1, but no ventilation or fan.

I posted this in the Nvidia forum as well.
I've tested the wifi on my tablet in a bunch of different ways using ookla speed test and general chrome browsing. I have come to pretty much the same conclusion most people in here have. The wifi is weaker than most other wifi devices but this will not be noticed in an ideal wifi setup. For folks with less than ideal wifi setups, they are affected more.
There are a few caveats to my test: I am not using gamestream, so I can not comment on that. And I have such low wifi speed from my ISP (30mbps), that I can not test 5ghz top download speeds vs 2.4ghz top download speeds (because they both easily top out at 30mbps).
I want to go over the things that have improved my wifi performance.
1: Switching to 2.4ghz wifi. This has made the biggest difference for me. Paul Deemer was saying that not using 5ghz wifi is the best for the ST and I agree. I will switch to 5ghz when I gamestream and switch it back to 2.4ghz when I'm done gamestreaming (when I finally get my gaming PC back next month).
If you do need to use 5ghz wifi, see below for other improvements.
2: Using a wifi analyzer app to set my wifi channels up. My apple router is supposed to do this automatically, but when I used the wifi analyzer app I noticed that my channels were crowded.
I set my 2.4ghz wifi channel to an empty channel and I got a full bar more wifi strength in my living room. I set my 5ghz wifi to the highest channel I possibly could (I think 160) and I got a full bar more wifi strength in my living room as well.
3: Avoiding the wifi antenna. This only affects 5ghz wifi for me. When I use 2.4ghz this issue goes away.
http://youtu.be/7v3AR6gZNYQ
4: Using a cover. The cover seems to keep you hand from interfering with the wifi antenna. This is not a total fix, but it does help. Just like in this video at 6:30.
Wifi Death Grip Samsung Galaxy S4 Workaround: http://youtu.be/ySIUuMAvduM
5: Moving your router. If you're having wifi issues you could always try moving your router. I will be moving my router to my living room where I eventually will be gamestreaming.
All of this stuff has been talked about before in this thread and others. I just hope to help anyone out who is still having wifi issues.

I use Netspot app to analyze my Wi-Fi Coverage. You need just a few clicks to load your home plan or area map and start a network site survey

Well... every other post is about Evo 4g love affair, so lets not
my only gripe is no voice & data at the sametime, other than that i am enjoying the EVO (atleast within my 30 day window haha). i am recently enjoying the linking of contacts to social networks and other items as well linking Qik to facebook to provide links to videos i posted without having to do it manually.
very cool phone, walk around in the airport listening to music, get the ok from pilot for electronics, switch to a movie, read the usatoday, send my wife a msg on gtalk, flip back to movie, etc etc etc
I love my EVO too which is why I am so sad that HTC put a cap on the graphics and I may have to return it...

+1 for this topic! I love mine as well. Amazing phone despite the negative reports (which I only experience a few of personally).
Good thread. I love my EVO too. The problems worry me but I still prefer it to the iPhone 3GS I just left, and to the iPhone 4 that is coming out. So far I haven't noticed touch screen issues or screen seperation. But this phone is still awesome. I would replace it though if there was a 4.3"-5" nexus one though
I am coming from a mogul, so things are night and day.
I am very happy with the evo...
yes I have seen wifi slowdown: max 5000kbps down, 1000 up with a only the dot as an indication; Performance degrades significantly if hand is placed over the kickstand area. Battery life is as expected for heavy use (12hrs, blue tooth & 3g data all day, 20% screen brightness). I see the screen lifting ever so slightly and can barely see light creeping though at night, but I got a seidio case which seems to keep everything snug, if it gets worse I'll do the black silicone trick. Barring the fact that I haven't found a file encryption package, or a way to easily back everything up (as i could with sprite backup on wm)......that is ...yet.
I love this thing and use it all day. The speech to text is awesome (I laught to think that I was worried about a keyboard!)
the wifee got one too. she is happy as she has never had a smartphone or anything that could do email/internet. I showed her the problem with the display(slight lifting & setting on a table-top slider), and she gave me a dumb look and said "so, whats the problem? " .... I left it at that.
you will never have a perfect production run, there will always be software bugs, lets home that HTC will improve their processes, make current customers happy (returns & repair and or replacements), and will get together with sprint for an action plan including the release with fixes to the current problems with a easy to root, android 2.2 update.

It's the way people have been conditioned lately...for instance...when was the last time you heard of a happy marriage? but I bet you heard of a **** ton of divorces and unhappy marriages...no one goes out singing high praises anymore, it's always complaints and *****ing.
On a brighter note, yes, the phone has it's problems...it wouldn't be a consumer grade electronic device if it didn't. I personally LOVE it.
No issues here. Coming from an AT&T Tilt, so consider my world rocked at the moment.

You and me both, and I was running android on it, so even with the fps cap, the EVO is faster I can't think of another phone I would rather have right now despite the issues. Have had zero hardware issues and can fairly easily get 20+ hours of battery life with moderate usage. Quite happy...

In all seriousness, I don't know that I have turned on my laptop more than once or twice since I got my EVO, I think that it hits the perfect balance of screen size and pocketability for light internet surfing/email/blog reading/Facebook/etc. such that it makes a full sized computer almost irrelevant. vibrant accelerometer issue please help

There appears to be a problem with my accelerometer. It started to notice it when playing Homerunbattle3d. A few days ago, the motion was smooth. It was very fluid
Now, the motion is very jerky.
I tested the accelerometer using 2 bubble level programs as well with the same result. The bubble moved around with a jerky motion.
Is there a setting for accelerometer somewhere?
I'm not sure if my accelerometer is defective or if I messed up a setting somehow.

Download android sensor data from the market.. run it. And try again. Definitely a software bug or this app wouldn't fix it.
I run it after every restart.. seems to calibrate the sensor.. its smooth as can be when fixed...
Can't believe more people haven't complained about this...
Man, it's something new every day with this phone, huh?
I hadn't even gotten into gaming performance / accelerometer issues. I've been stressing out over 3G reception / GPS and Compass being completely and 100% broken. One more thing to worry about with the ever-nearing Buyer's Remorse period running down...
I guess I'll go download some tilt games and see what happens. I'll report back with my findings.

and thank you for recommending the accelerometer data thing it really help fixed the problem completely
I guess I should rephrase:
Any free games I could grab to test this?
I got PapiJump, and immediately noticed that something wasn't right.
I just finished wasting my time proving to some jack-off that there is an issue with 3G reception. Upon exiting SpeedTest, I put the screen to sleep and downloaded PapaiJump on my iPhone.
The controls worked perfectly, so I loaded up the Android version again, just to see if it was still wonky. Oddly enough, it controlled just as well as the iPhone version. I don't know if it somehow re-calibrated itself somehow, but the initial run was not a good sign: 'Papi' would constantly fly to the left, regardless of my input.
I guess I'll keep an eye on this issue and see if it was just a fluke for me.

This is the over statement of the day. How is 3G, GPS and Compass 100% broken? Granted some people are having some issues but its not as bad as you're saying. I have no issues with 3G and GPS. Sounds like you have a broken phone.
This is kind of off-topic, but then again, so was your rebuttal.
Really? Your GPS is flawless and 100% accurate without wireless networks and WiFi? I've had two phones now, with exactly the same issues. Google Maps thinks I'm in another city, and satellite lock takes ~5 minutes.
As for 3G reception problems...really? You don't notice anything?
Here I am, with what I would refer to as 'decent' speeds for my area. This is my phone, sitting on a table, with no human contact.

This is my phone, with only my index finger touching the device (propping it up with a single finger).
I guess it's possible that I might have two defective phones. I'm going to go ahead and say that it's unlikely. Feel free to replicate this test. As mentioned before: I'm using the silicon case with my device.
If you feel like debating this issue in another thread, feel free. Otherwise, let us get back to testing the rest of the equipment.
Are there any (free?) SixAxis games on the market, yet?

No free ones I know of.. and your speed drop is not normal. Most people lose bars not much speeds. I know I get awesome speeds even if bars drop and so do most people.. I'm not saying I don't believe you but 99% of people don't have that drop in speeds...
All in my opinion needing fixed is 3g bars how there's displayed, minor GPS fixes, fix compass, and now this accelerometer thing.. other than those I love this phone..

Should've stopped right there.
I have the same problem. And it was also with Homerun Battle 3D. Before finding this thread I would restart my phone, uninstall the app and not find any way to get rid of the issue. Android Sensor Data fixes it but I haven't tested it more than once.
I'm on the original rom that shipped with the phone. I have some lag but it hasn't gotten in the way too much. Anybody else having this problem?

[Q] Wifi performance - is it really so poor?

Hi everyone, I am new to A500 forum.
I recently got an A500. Got it from US, updated to stock ICS. Great and hefty device, poor camera ( worst 5 mpx i've seen so far, I can only can guess is because of the bad/proprietary jpeg algorithm) but the real let down is the WiFi.
Side by side, running wifi analyzer it's under every device I have ( and I have a lot) , I'll just enumerate my findings side-by-side to whatever:
SGS2 a 10 db diff, SGS3 20 db, Samsung tab 10 -20, Lumia 900 - 1~2 lines (Lumia's got WP), regular laptops display excellent wifi where the tab has -80 dBm.
Read on forums about antenna replacement, tried 3 types ( all tree pulled out of laptops) so far, no noticeable improvement.
Is this the normal performance for A500- I mean, it's natural to be worse than a lappy, but worse a than a phone?
Anyway, the side slots are covered by the hands when not in portrait mode, not to mention the Al back that really shields everything. Whoever designed the A500 should run for a Darwin prize.
What's your experience in the A500 vs phone?

Thanks a lot, I'll try it also to see if there's improvement. Some questions :
Did you remove the original antenna?
How did you place it inside, eg: towards the edge/ where the old one used to be/ flat ? I'm asking this because the placement surely has to do lot about antenna's dipole...

I completely removed the old antenna, yes it must be at either side, fire to the metal housing, where in the a edges it is plastic. On either side produces the same effect. Make sure to remove your sd card and leave the flap open when re closing the device

Did you remove the metal housing with the holes? I think that's just a holder for the antenna..
I have two windows phones, both have much better wifi signal strength than my A500. Those are way smaller. I know size doesn't matter, it is the antenna inside that matters, but given the size of the A500, I thought they can put a much better antenna in without any space problem. But they didn't.
I do find after upgrade to ICS from HC, the marking(bars) were even worse, it doesn't mean too much because that's only the marking, not the DB numbers.
I've attached 3 pictures with wifi strength: WP7 Samsung Focus S, galaxy S2 ICS` these devices are quite twins if not for the OS and CPU and the Acer Iconia A500...taken on the same spot...this really shouldn't be happening when compared to regular phones... after all, A500 it's a tablet with only WiFi connectivity. WiFi should be the strong point for these devices... i understand it's a SOC device but, c'mon...
Yep, it seems WP7 has better wifi...or displays better signal at least...

No that fire mention is what swype put there instead of due. Due to the metal housing/back it needs to be place where it was to begin with or on the opposite side.
And for your statement I have no clue as to holder for antenna

Help Me Pick A Router

Recently i had my belkin 600DB take a dump, it no longer wnats to recieve an ip from my modem so last night i went out to wally world (WalMart) and picked myself up a Netgear WNDR3700 and went home to set it up. It took me two hours to get it setup and wifi working. I start connecting all my Android, Computers, Media Players, and iDevices i notice they're all having trouble actually using the internet. So now im probably going to take that one back and now i'm on the hunt for a router that works. it seemed like a good high end router, maybe its a lemon. So what do you guys use to connect all your devices. I have 9 devices with 3-5 or in use at a time. 2PC,1PS3,4Phones,1XBOX360,1Tablet.1Roku. Im with time warner cable and pay for a 15/1 connection but usually get 20/1 (im the only person in my neighborhood with time warner so i guess they let me use a little bit more) Im looking to spend no more than 100 unless its a big upgrade. Thanks for all your help. Hope this fits in this section.
I had the ADSL modem/router equivalent and despite the criticism and high price I never had major problems with it. Sometimes more expensive does not mean better. Nevertheless, I would entertain getting an 802.11ac Asus (instead of Netgear) router (RT-AC66U) even if no device uses the protocol yet, but that's just me jumping prematurely into any new geek toy. I guess your issues might not have something to do with the router.
Asus makes good routers it seems.

Depends on your price range for what you paid at wal-mart you can get a Better higher end Linksys E4200 cheaper on say Amazon.
I have a Linksys WRT310N Wireless-N Gigabit Router and it works great for me.
We have two desktop computers, two laptops, one netbook, two tablets (one ipad, one surface), four iphones (3g,2x4,4s), one nintendo wii, two xbox 360s, one apple tv, and a tv with wifi built-in.
Works pretty good, runs a little hot but no major problems over the years, so I say it's worth the $50.
Here's a speedtest.net result, no slow downs.

@OP
What is your ISP (Sat, Cable, DSL, UVerse)?
What is your modem model?
What speed plan are you subscribed to?
I see nothing but praise for the RT-N66U. I've been using a Dir-655 since release, it's about 50$ now but it's a solid router. It had major issues with it's firmware for the first two or three years, but it's stable now.
The RT-N66U is better, and (hopefully more futureproof), but it'll run you around 160$. The Dir-655 is a good router too, older, not as futurepoof, it'll run you around 50$.

I picked up the RT-N16 a few years ago, and it still works well. I'll also throw my vote in for the RT-N66U if it's within your price range.
Whatever you end up buying, I would also highly recommend flashing a custom firmware for better stability and more features. I ran DD-WRT for a very long time on a few old WRT54G routers (apparently, they still sell those!), but I think that Tomato has matured in recent years and has a much cleaner interface anyway. I've been running Toastman builds of Tomato for a while now, and I'm pretty satisfied with the results.

Have you tried using DD-WRT on your WNDR3700?
I'm using the DD-WRT v24-sp2 (10/06/12) std (SVN revision 20086) build, and it works without flaw for me!

WiFi Performance Issues

I am beginning to wonder if this is a problem with the Snapdragon 820 chipset. My and my wife's Note 7s exhibited the same behavior. Now, our v20s are doing it as well. Here is the problem:
This is my speed immediately after rebooting my phone. The same applies to hers. This is the service I have. It is the speed I get on my desktop, laptop, my daughter's GS5, and I used to get on my old note 4.

After the v20 has been connected for a few minutes, and until reboot, THIS is the speed I get:
Both of these were ran from the same position relative to my router.
The Note 7, which my wife and I both had two of before getting the v20, shares the same chipset and did the exact same thing. A few things of note: I did have a Netgear R6400 AC router until a couple of weeks ago. It was a great router and always delivered my full speed to my devices, except the Note 7 and v20. I recently upgraded my router to a Netgear Nighthawk x10.

I did this partially to rule out an issue with the R6400, and because my parents needed a new router so this gave me an excuse with my wife to spend 500 bucks on the router I wanted. The point is, the issue is not the router. This behavior only occurs in our v20s. One would think that the newest flagship phone would play nicely with a new flagship router.
Why do I get full speed only for about 3 minutes after a reboot? Could it be a problem with the congestion algorithm? This has been driving me nuts since we "upgraded" from our Note 4s to the 7s back in August. Does anyone else have similar issues?

It is highly improbable that I am the ONLY ONE who is experiencing this. Anyone?

LOTS of variables to deal with here man. To demonstrate, what was packet loss, software version, time of day, isp, etc. These are just a few of the standard ones. Claiming poor wifi performance on the 820 with only 2 spedtest charts gives us next to no info on your problem.

Packet loss is 0% both instances. Software version: Android 7.0, I figured that since this is a v20 forum, that went without saying. Time of day - is on the screenshots. ISP = TWC, 300/20. If you read my post, you'll see I can duplicate this behavior all day every day, on two separate devices: my v20, and my wife's v20. Same behavior on the note 7s we had. Our note 4s which we had prior to the note 7s got great speed all the time. My desktop, laptop, daughter's Galaxy s5, my buddies Galaxy Note 5, ALL get excellent speed all the time.

You cant compare what a desktop and a laptop gets to your phone speeds. Ever think its speed test app itself? I had a note 7 and the v20. When I connected to my works Wi-Fi and run speedtests they was virtually the same. It could be your provider having issues. How many devices are connected to your router when testing the speeds. You do know those tests are suppose to be taken with a grain of salt. Go to a public Wi-Fi spot like McDonald's and test the speeds on the v20 and note 7. I doubt there's anything wrong with the phones.
Dude if you get 110 mbps on your phone then that's more than enough and trying to get the full 330 mbps is just overkill lol

Same readings when data connection is off, and only wifi is enabled on the v20? And yes there are already different software updates even though they're claiming only security fixes...
I've noticed some weird WiFi performance as well. Specifically a delay in initial connections. If I load a web page it takes a second or two to actually begin loading. I can't say for sure it's the phone yet, though. It may be my router. However I do feel like the WiFi is snappier after initial boot of phone compared to later on. I'll try and post some tests myself.

I absolutely can compare desktop, laptop, and phone - I just did. Did you even read my OP? Both of those speed tests ARE from my v20. If an over 2 year old device (note 4) gets better, faster wifi than a 2 month old device, something is wrong. The same number of devices are connected in the first test as in the 2nd. Furthermore, my router is Netgears newest flagship, connectivity is a non issue. None of this explains why, for the first couple of minutes after reboot I get the speeds I expect, then after a few minutes, I get what is shown in the 2nd result until I reboot again. 4 devices exhibited this behavior, the only thing they have in common is the chipset. It is not an issue with my provider, as I can immediately get full speed on any device in my home that is NOT a v20. As far as your assertion that these tests should be taken with a grain of salt: they are consistent. Not only the Speedtest app, but other ones as well. If I can reproduce the results without fail across several devices and multiple apps, to me that is a pretty strong indicator that something is off.
Lastly, if 300 mb/s is overkill, then why is gigabit Internet even a thing? These devices are (supposed to be) capable of making use of today's higher speeds.

yeah I've got some issues too. upon reboot it's definitely faster.

This is an absolute issue. I have both my Note 7 and V20 (just bought it to replace my Note) hooked up to my Gigabit internet. WiFi drops like a sack of potatoes after a restart on the LG. My note is still crusing along. Wtf

I actually made a post about this on reddit and many, many, people are saying the same thing...
you guys are lucky... never passed 30/20 on my LGV10 and it looks to be the same with the LGV20 for me... definitely should be capable of 300/30 here.
