Well I guess I'm first I guess - NOOK Tablet 7" Questions & Answers

I am a tablet nomad, always changing and upgrading. I am selling my 10.1" galaxy for an Asus Chromebook. Now I am looking at going from a 6" kindle fire to a new 7" Nook tablet. I just do not like the kindle ecosystem. It looks like the new nook will let me install the kindle app from the Play Store. I find the 10 inch for factor too large for books so I am using a smaller tablet for kindle, nook and my Bible reading. I'll let you know how it works out.
Now to wait for someone to root it. I'm pretty sure illness stick with Stock rooted.

why did you pick this over nook tablet?

just curious to see your reasoning...
Bought both and returned the nook tablet.
the NT was far too restrictive.. they lock you down into their little world.
At least with the fire I have some options
Cheaper, its amazon, oh and the boot loader isn't locked.
Instant video app.
I have other tablets with more storage and functionality, but they don't stream Amazon instant video without some stuttering.
Still haven't decided if this is enough for me to keep the tablet.
Because ....
... my wife ordered it before the Nook tablet was announced. But now that both are public, I'm happier with the (fairly open) Kindle than I would be with the (locked down) Nook.
I'm an Amazon Prime member, and the ecosystem Amazon provides is much better than Barnes and Noble.
The only tablet out there that plays Netflix,Amozon VOD and stream espn3 without issues. Also like the UI. It does what I need it for with minimum of screwing around and now that I have rooted and installed market and side loaded some apps, it's perfect for my needs.
This is from a guy who has bought or used most of the tablets that has come around recently including i pad. I bought one for wife initially and ended up getting one for myself.

I'm a amazon prime member, so easy choice for me! also I enjoy the form factor of the kindle better than the nook (what in the world is that little hole for?)
Price and I have always wanted a kindle

Mainly the build quality of the device it feels solid in hand as oppose to the flimsy feel of the nook tablet. I don't like the extra weight of having a case so the kindle fire is perfect and also the unlock bootloader.

The interface, the entire experiance. I like that amazon is truely offering a different experiance and bundled it in all in a nice package. I mean, no offence to other manufactures, but I feel like amazon really brought something to the table that is truely unique. I mean look at the vast options of honeycomb tablets, or gingerbread tablets, their all pretty much the same, they may have some skins on top, but underneath their all just the same old interface, don't get me wrong, I love android, but what amazon has done is organize everything that I do into a neat package. I can click on a section for the launcher and I am presented with specific content, I love that if I want to catch up on some shows, I can click the videos tab, or play a game click on my apps tab, and from there I can quickly access the app store, it all just makes sense to me.

I have about 300 dollars worth of Kindle books. Simple as that, really.
Before the Nook Tablet announcement I pre-ordered the Kindle:
-Price (I even bought the cover with a $20 credit)
-All my Kindle books available out of the box, without waiting for a root or hack
-Easier to buy from Amazon, free two-day shipping as a Prime
Best buy gave me a 50$ dollar gift card by accident.

pitnefor, in which way?
guys when i went to bestbuy, netflix was laggy. it seems to be that way on the reviews i've watched too. plus, they've achieved full root with the nook. the bootloader point still stands though...what about the gig of ram, and one piece screen?
i agree daggy. but it stuttered when i tried to play with it.
and to everybody who talks about cost, if that wasn't an issue would you still stay with your kindle?
plus, it has one button. what recovery will you use? one where you press that button a certain amount of seconds to scroll up, down, etc. ? thanks

They have a touchscreen recovery in the works apparently.
Also I would never trust any test that uses internet in bestbuy. I worked there for a year and it was the worst. They didnt even have a separate network for the display equipment, so if people kept going on sites, it would crash up the sales machines and you couldn't punch in/out.
Horrors.
We had to use a verizon mifi to get any real work done.

You commented about stuttering in 2 of your 3 consecutive posts.
I believe this thread is the "why you picked the Kindle over the Nook Tablet", not the "why I like to bash Kindle thread".
I will say that I have no issues playing video on my Kindle Fire. Netflix, Prime, or the conversions to MP4 I've loaded onto my device.

but again, if the NT and KF cost the same, which would you all buy then, and why?

[Solved] Thinking about getting the Fire

So I'm in a debate with myself to buy the Kindle Fire. I've been wanting a tablet for a while, but something cheap. $200 is definitely within my price range.
I'd want to flash a custom ROM to it so that I'm not just using it as an eBook reader, I'd like to use it as a regular Android tablet. How is the support for something like Cyanogenmod? Would it be worth buying to use as a regular tablet?
Thanks for the input!
there should be all the information you request:

TBH, the nook tablet looks better than the kindle fire, BUT I think the kindle is going to get more developer support due to the sheer amount sold during the holidays.
True. There is no point in having better hardware if you have nothing to use it with.

Would you recommend Kindle Fire for a first Tablet?

So I am wanting to purchase my first tablet. I so far am very impressed with the dev society for the KF. I haven't done alot of digging but the Roms look very impressive. Also haveing cwm and that other recovery is great. One big thing, after rooting can you do anything with the KF that you can with most other tablets? Does it do Flash? I assume that once you get google play on there that you can put on all of your bought apps and such. I am pretty excited but want to get a good tablet for the whole family. Thanks so much.

Dude u should wait for the nexus tablet or the Asus memo those are both 200 and 250 and have more to offer than the kindle. Either way u can't go wrong I love my kindle fire
Sent from my R800i using Tapatalk
Yes after rooting u could do whatever, so far flash is supported on stock, cm7 and 2.3 roms , and soon to be stable with cm9 and 4.0 roms. Google play is working perfectly too but some gameloft games don't work

You can't go wrong with a kindle fire. First and foremost it's an E-reader then a tablet in my opinion (which is not meant to take anything away from the device) . The Kindle reading app blows any other reading app out of the water. Add that onto all the hard work the devs have put in and you have a huge array of different add ons and directions you can go with your Fire. Plus amazon customer support I have found to be awesome. I had a problem with my unit charging, i called them on a saturday and I had my new kindle on monday. I'm guessing we might see a reduction in cost in the next few months as amazon is likely to announce their new line of e-reader/tablet.
Since each individual case is not the same. It is important to weigh the pros and cons yourself. If you are willing to ignore the cons then it's an easy choice.
Pros: Android (read: customizability), price, customer support, Amazon catalogue, XDA community support (a huge consideration for me), etc.
Cons: KF has no mic or camera or memory card slot and has only 512mb RAM.
So if you don't care about the cons or can live without them then, at this price point, it is a no-brainer.
Personally, I whole-heartedly recommend it!

If you want a cheap tablet that you can make not so cheap, then yes. But you'll have to do a little work, and it's not for the faint at heart.
If you want a good tablet straight out of the box, you'd be better off going with something else. Stock Kindle Fire OS is buggy and kind of annoying. And it's nearly impossible to customize.

I agree with all the other posters above me.
The KF is VERY easily rooted, which opens up both great opportunities for modding and an unfortunate can of worms for idiots who jump in headfirst without understanding what they're doing.
At this point if you were interested I'd just buy it used. That and read up on the rooting process, what a bootloader/recovery is, AND HOW TO CONTROL THEM VIA ADB/FASTBOOT. You can see the # of "bricked" threads, which are purely from the lack of understanding the above.
I agree with all those who have already posted, I would just caution you that if your looking for a tablet that you can root and then flash and jump into a stable custom rom the Kindle Fire isn't there yet, it's almost there but not completely. Hashcode just pushed out his new 3.0 kernel and it is almost perfect but has some issues. If you're looking for a tablet that your willing to work with and possibly reflash daily then go for the Kindle Fire, it's a great tablet to learn with since it's being heavily developed right now, however if you want more stability i'd wait for the google tab or go with an older tablet.

I, as everybody else, am also eagerly waiting for ICS - but saying there are no stable ROMs is incorrect. I'm running CM7 since ages with zero issues on two KFs.

Yup, and it's way more fun since ditching the Amazon software for ICS ROMs.
Get it! Cheap, and will only get cheaper! Plus, the hacktivity on xda is enormous!

Picked mine up when they had the refurbs on sale for $139. Love it to death. Very easy to root and install Roms with thanks to XDA.

I like the Fire so much I just bought another one for a family member. About to flash ICS and hopefully never go back to stock.
Thankyou to everyone who posted. I do see the kindle fire as a good solid option and I love the dev community you guys have built here. I really think you guys have somthing special going on here. However I think I may be tempted by the Nook Tablet. After you root it and repartition the Hard Drive. You have way more space than the kf. The Nook also has an SD slot. The display is a little better as well. IT also has a gig of memory vs the KF 512. So I think ima go with it. I tell ya this though I sure would have enjoyed the society here. You guys seem to be top notch. THANKS FOR YALLS HELP
Hope y'all have a good one.

If youplan on rooting go with the fire if not get the galaxy's tab. I on my kf right now by the way and it has built in flash that works great!

Nook Color better, IMO, than Kindle Fire.
I'd recommend the Nook Color over the Kindle Fire. The main difference, aside from the fact that it's a bit cheaper, is that it has an SDcard slot that not only provides up to 32GB of extra space, but allows you to boot from ROMs on the card without altering the Nook itself. This also makes it a lot harder to brick, or easier to unbrick, than the Fire. You can, of course, put ROMs on the internal memory, just as you can with the Fire. Look at the Nook Color forum on this site for more info.
The Nook Tablet is another matter. I don't know much about it, but I understand that B&N has made it a lot harder to hack than the Nook Color, You can check the forum for the Nook Tablet here on xda to see how much success devs have had so far with overcoming its protections.
nook color.is.nothing in front of kindle.fire.and nook tablet is same like kindle.fire but with sd card slot and cheap build quality i have used both and kindle is like solid metal and nook tablet is like cheap plastic
now kernel 3.0 is supporting otg and u can connect usb drives and hard drives with it
so go for kindle fire u will not regret

[Q] Prime Borrow & Nook

I have a prime account but not a kindle but do have a STR. Is there anyway to get the Amazon borrow working with the nook? I see the first generation Kindle is very cheap $10-$20 used. Can I get that register it and then transfer it over to the Nook (or Kindle app on my Nook or computer)? Any thoughts or ideas would be appreciated. Thanks,
Well it turns out the old Kindles that are working are a little more than $20. However, the only I can figure getting the prime borrowing working is to buy an old Kindle, use Calibre to take off DRM, read book on nook and then delete book when done. I don't think it is worth the effort I'm assuming most of the Amazon Prime borrowing books are older books anyways. Sadly though I think Amazon has a small competitive advantage in this area over the Nook.

Doesn't Prime borrowing work with the Kindle for PC app? If so, you obviously can skip the step of buying a Kindle. Then, once you've stripped DRM and converted to epub, you shouldn't ever have to delete the book from the Nook.

It does not work with the apps (PC, Android, iOS) only the hardware Kindles.

Another disappointment

A tablet of this size and style has a very specific space in the pantheon of tablets, and I don’t believe the Amazon app store and Fire UI are robust enough to support the tools users may want from a tablet at this price.

I paid $129 for my Kindle Fire HD during the black Friday sale in November.
It's an amazing tablet, saddled with an appalling front end. I've installed ADW on mine which alleviates it a bit... I rooted mine, but then had to factory reset it which apparently renders it unable to be rooted again. So until that issue is fixed by minds far smarter than mine I'm stuck unrooted and Google'less which given the stuff I have on the Play Store is a fairly major headache. I mean I'd happily buy some of the apps AGAIN for use on the Kindle, but they're not available.
But anyway, yes, the Kindle Fire HD is akin to taking a nice little fancy-ish sportscar, and plopping a clapped out 1974 Ford Escort engine in it.
