Root without Knox possible? Do I lose my data? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

Hi,
Well I made it half a year without root but I want my adaway back. Adguard just doesn't work very well.
Is it in the meantime possible to root without triggering Knox? I don't really care that much anymore but if it was, I would go for it.
Also, can I root without having to format the phone?
Thanks!

You better not root if you wanna play safe on this side. and about the ad block, format onece and purchase a good anti virus (internet security) which doesn't even cost much. it'll prevent phising web page and adware away from your phone. although android is based on linux. so it won't be virus affected just yet. happy use.

yes, you can root without formatting your device. But knox will be tripped which could cause samsung/dealer to refuse to repair your phone.

Netguard from github is working nicely for adblocking without root

Thanks! The adhell thingy looks fine and seems to work. And it doesn't need a simulated VPN like Adguard.

Just installed adhell and it looks like it works very well. Any advantages of disconnect me?

I think there is a way to reset knox, but dont know, wether a link is allowed or not here!?

As long as it is no scam, why should it be forbidden?

Some...............
You can stop and turn off some programs in settings without root.
And perhaps something from chain fire with his Odin auto root method.
Then you have that whole Knox thing.... If you care.

Can someone explain the 'whole Knox thing?'
It sounds like its something used for business devices to separate personal stuff. So if my Note is purely personal, do I care about Knox?

As far as I understand. When u root. It voids knox, so then if something happens and you send it in for warrenty. Samsung can tell knox is void and the warrenty is also void.

Yes, I recently found out. Let's see if the "turn off" thingy is good enough.

Understanding knox.

I need to check some facts
When upgraded to 4.3 I lost root and my is back to stock? True or false
Would it be safe to post a pic of my knox screen?

If you took the OTA update to 4.3, then yes you are on the Knox bootloader. AND you are stock unrooted (unless you've since rooted).
Yes it's safe to post a pic of you system config; there is nothing anyone can take from that information that is harmful to you.
Is this a clean knox? Or is it already tripped.

Isn't it the custom recovery that ends up tripping the Knox anyways?
I'm a Verizon guy and also have a sprint s4 that I threw Philz on. So I'm not sure if you can do that without tripping Knox, that's the impression I got though.

Yes, custom recovery will trip Knox.
1. My phone was previously rooted,
2. Got 4.3 update
3. Now has a clean knox
My questions are
A. can I root my phone again?
B. Will later android updates give me another clean knox?
C. Are any procedures like triangle away that will keep knox clean?
D. Is warranty the only reason I want a clean knox?

A. Yes you can, if you don't want the Knox warranty flag use Safe Root. If you google safe root for S4 you should find the link. The Knox flag is actually tripped when you install a custom recovery. This means if you use cf autoroot, twrp, philz, or any other root or recovery the Knox flag will be tripped. If you want to install a custom rom or mod, then you will trip the Knox flag since those require a custom recovery. If you just want to root and remove bloat, backup with TiBu, install xposed framework modules, or even unlock the hotspot then you can do those without a custom recovery and keep your Knox warranty flag in place.
B. No, once you have tripped the Knox warranty flag, so far the flag is not reset by installing updates or the full stock tar file of a newer version.
C. Not at his time.
D. Yes, at this time the only thing the Knox warranty flag does is show Samsung that your device has been tampered with at one time. Sprint and Assurian still honor the TEP insurance, but if your phone has to be sent to Samsung for repair or warranty that is where you will have problems.

Mostlikely YES.
My brother's device had problems with some of their corporate apps (email/portal stuff) designed to look for ROOT and othe security (knox I bet) changes. Is IT guys literally swapped out his phone after he rooted it!
Plus it seems that a whole lot of people are having issue connecting to PEAP WiFi networks; primarily, I'm guessing' Cisco based. [Cisco is notoriously behind the curve. Heck they have security devices (ASAs) that must be accessed with OLD java versions.]
But there ARE some solutions for that around here.

Hot spot is easy, run the safe root file from your pc to root your phone. Then download the odexed MK2 hot spot mod in post 337 in the hot spot mod thread. Use 7zip or similar app to extract the services.jar and services.odex file to your sdcard. Then use root explorer to copy them to the system/framework directory. It is a good idea to backup the original files. After you copy the new files you will need to change the permissions to rw-r-r. After this is done reboot and enjoy free hot spot. This will not trip knox since you don't have to install a custom recovery.

Sorry, but I was responding from my phone and couldn't post links but here you go:
Find the correct MK2 odexed hot spot mod in post #337 of this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2256950&page=34
Then you can follow crawj's procedures here to manually install the update without a custom recovery: https://skydrive.live.com/view.aspx...E!131&app=Word&wdo=2&authkey=!AJdLcpl9ak9eZnw
Good Luck
is there a way to remove KNOX completely without tripping the 0x1 flag? has there been developments in this area? seems like everyone's focused on trying to reverse the flag once it's set, but what about the removal of KNOX so that it never sets that flag?

The problem occurs within the bootloader of the MJA or newer firmware. With that version of the software, Samsung has prevented the downgrading of the bootloader so there is no way to get rid if that feature. You can go through the rom and remove or disable the Knox files, which do nothing for the phone except free up some space. Knox's purpose is to allow Samsung to create a secure environment for corporate and government companies that need to protect their info and intellectual properties. The average user will never need Knox, so it's safe to remove. When Samsung fully implemented Knox with 4.3 they integrated it into the bootloader. Now, all of us assume the Knox warranty flag voids your Samsung warranty, which it probably does, but I believe its true purpose is to void the Knox integrity check so the Knox secure containers know the phone has been tampered with and can't guarantee data security.
Data security is big business and Samsung wants a piece of that pie.

computer programs and knox
so once knox is tripped to 0x1 does that prevent your phone being read by other programs? only reason i ask is because i have tripped knox and some of my data on my phone has been erased (notes, pics, sms, contacts) and the programs i have wont even acknowledge my phone.

should i root my note 4 ?

hello all ,,,
i really wanna ask you for the best advise
should i root my note 4 ?
what would i lose if i did ?
what are the best things i gain ?
does it make the devise slower ?
or does it mess up with the battery ?
and thank you very much
After reading your questions, the answer for you is NO.
Rooting is great and opens up a eorkd of oppertunities and can make ur software much smoother. But in YOUR case, dont do it cuz it dont seem like u will benefit from it
Yeah, the benefits are endless and has few if any downsides. One of these few things could be warranty issues, but that's mostly theoretical I think depending on which brand.
My only consern towards you is that it seems you actually do not know what rooting actally is at all, due to your line of questioning.
Rooting does not do anything more to your phone than providing plain admin access like you got with a pc. Nothing else whatsoever, besides getting you cut off from installing/using many usefull apps which only accepts non root/jailbraked phones due to security/copyright issues.
The upside of rooting and the admin access/control is that it opens up for installing apps which can tune your phone and it's framework to better performance and endless ways of customizations.
Before you even think of getting in to this, READ UP on the matter. It seems like you think rooting in itself is some kind of magic wondercure that makes your phone into a superdevice. And if you have to ask this questions at all, better keep off untill some learning is done. If you do these proceedures wrong, your phone easily dies.

By rooting, You'll trip the "knox counter" in the bootloader to read 0x1 (=customized). The permanent result of this is that the Knox partition will not function ever again. This is because Samsung can/will not guarantee the knox security system anymore beeing intact on a customized phone and the phone shuts the knox down automaticly when Knox counter is triped.
Besides that, rooting does nothing to the system other than provide administrator priveligies.
can u please let me see your battery life pattern ?

There is no 'best' it is down to personal preference and how your device behaves. You need to try a variety of them until you find one you like.
that is why i said please recommend me one , maybe i don't have time to test them all :$

Guys, do you think we will be able to root WITHOUT tripping Knox??
I stopped rooting my phones. Not sure if the people who root fully realize what rooting does to they phones.
There is a reason why banking apps and many others do not work on a rooted phones..
Any app with su access can read/write the private data (and in memory) of any other app. It is ridiculous..
You basically relay on supersu (or similar) to protect you. Can you trust it 100%? What if it crash?

To root and flash or to not root and flash, that is the question!

I have rooted and flashed just about every android phone I have owned, including SGS2, SGS4 and SGN4 that I had previous to the SGS7e.
I am very happy with the smoothness and fluidity of stock. And I know what advantages root etc brings.
But my question is... are custom ROMS considered to be as smooth and fluid as stock?
advantages: Xposed, other than that I don't see a reason.
You could root without flashing a custom ROM?

Ever heard of an app called "S package disabler" before? You can delete almost anything, even the stock messaging app or such, lol.
Ooh I came to the right thread, just got my s7 edge as a replacement for my note 5 and boy am I itching to root it... I only lasted a few weeks with my note 5 until I had to root it.. I agree the ui and performance is great on stock but I'm missing viper4android and titanium backup badly... I wanted to stay stock so I could use Samsung pay and my bankings mobile payment but I don't see myself using it much. That and maybe also resale value since id like to upgrade to the s8 but I'm not sure how much longer I can hold off lol. Hopefully this thread will help my decision...

Wait... There shouldn't be Facebook app pre installed first of all... If it is, you should be able to easily remove it. You should try flashing a clean version of the rom (even if stock) from a different region (not US, for unlocked versions). I think after this you won't have any apps to disable.
The only app that I had pre installed was My Vodafone, which I need anyway but it can be easily uninstalled. Also, I disabled S voice but that's on every Sammy phone.
This is the one version that is working for me.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.packagedisabler
Erm... Was working should I say. With the last version, it keeps crashing for me. I'm sure it will be fixed soon tho.

Well.. You know how it goes. Legally it doesn't void your warranty, companies just rely on those customers who don't care, and unfortunately there is majority of those.
Btw, try to flash the clean rom if you have the international version. This won't void your warranty (it will not trigger knox) as its original package directly from Samsung.

No..i was not talking about debloated (custom) rom. I was talking about a clean stock rom without the apps you mentioned. It's just a rom that is official, probably targeted to a different market/country and it won't trigger knox.
You can download it here, an installation guide is there as well: http://forum.xda-developers.com/s7-edge/how-to/official-stock-firmware-update-odin-t3335065
I know this might sound pathetic to the pro flashers but for me the biggest advantages are no ads, no bloatware and no samsung emojis. Custom Roms are amazing but I simply don't have the time to flash everything anymore
True, I've been a flasher myself but now I'm just not into it, just want a phone to run properly, be productive and that's it... That's why had a Note 5 then the 7...really missing the pen functionality

that's a good suggestion, but which version of package disabler works? I bought two but they don't freeze the apps i want ...
2- is it possible to remove the facebook app that comes with the phone pre installed and install an older version to reduce the battery hogging somehow through package disabler? please help

You can uninstall Facebook app. Go to App settings -> Facebook and firstly you need to disable it and then you can uninstall it.
When I tried this for the first time, I was surprised too....because I couldn't directly uninstall it.
Cheers!
No bloat, no Verizon, no Sammy, no ads; old Linux days, where you installed whatever packages you wanted to the base OS...

I did try that, it just restores it to the version that came with it pre-installed... I can't remove it because I used to have a patched version with the messenger integrated in the app itself...

What about root? Is there a clean root method that doesn't cause a bunch of ****?
Want to try to play shield games, mount and blade for instance.
stock firmware
I've heard the same about our bootloader
but here's the firmware you were asking for:
dubdubdub sammobile dot com slash firmwares slash database slash SM-G935p
(sorry about the lack of link, I'm under 10 posts still)
I have been using the G935U firmware since October. I like to pretend it's the closest I'm going to get to a debloated ROM for this phone.

I'm thinking of getting the edge. I'm not an expert. I have rooted phones but never used abd. Is it hard to use? And with root can you use Hotspot ?

However the ONE Thing that didn't work for me was my data so had to reflash back to stock. Still waiting on a reply from root junky for a fix incase i decide to re-root
Let me know if u get that fix.

Hate to be anal here. You mean that your carrier settings were lost and wifi was your only work around.
If that is the case I'll bag this idea till I know it's fixed.
Who is your carrier?

Carrier is Sprint. All i know is that i couldn't make a phone call or surf the web Unless using Wifi. Simply watch the video in the link and read the comments below and decide for yourself. Sorry im not a Tech Savy as most of U are.
I had the same problem, found a root method that worked but lost my cell internet connectivety, still had calling and texting though.
I just want root to use gltools so i can play nvidia shield games and mod games with gg.

Rooting after a certain version has the issues you described. I think it happened when the BootLoader upgrade happened. Look into the u firmware. Rooting on this device is different and kind of unstable.

to my understanding from other methods that i've seen on here they all say to remove ur sim card so idk might be an option if someone wants to attempt it and if it works I'm down for doing it
I found one with all workarounds for the problems with rooting this phone. Fixes for data cell service, and you can google wifi fix to save your wifi information after reboot. Involves build.prop editor.
@Nickvanexel Normally when folks boast about something important on a popular device, they back it up with either a how-to or links that point them in the right direction. Not only to verify proof but its also common courtesy. I see neither the 2 from you on this post or anywhere else. So tell me...
Was your intention to dazzle everybody with bullsh¡t or are you that much of an asshøle? ???
