S5 SM-G900F firmware upgrade issue and don't know latest OS-version - Galaxy S 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi there,
I have a Samsung Galaxy S5 (SM-G900F) which has a 'firmware upgrade encounterd an issue. Please select recovery mode in Kies & try again' problem.
I have tried the Kies-method. No result. Device isn't recognized by Kies and I don't have an recovery code.
Now I wanna try the Odin method, but for this I need the latest OS-version before the error occured. And this one I don't know, because I am trying to fix it for someone who has no clue. Probably it was running on a stock Vodafone ROM and probably the latest version was Lollipop. But like I said, that's all a guess.
I have read that I need to be sure about the OS-version, because otherwise I might brick it permanently.
I can get into download mode ... at least that's something.
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to bypass this? Or can I figure out what firmware version it was on in some other way?
Any help is greatly appreciated.

w/odin you can flash any android version just as long as the fw is for your s5 variant.
sometimes if not always going back to an older version than whats on the phone then a factory reset is usually needed after the flash
if odin sees the phone in dl mode then you should be good to flash.
backup the sdcards b4 u proceed

Thanks, will try it tommorow

Reading it back makes me some what nervous, because a guy named Emily J. Fox wrote this about it (not on the XDA forum but some other website):
Select the Correct Firmware Package version
From these step it’s also been crucial if you just grab any*firmware package*without knowing which one is the correct version to choose. So that is why I want you to know the correct*Android version*first. *Now, let say *if you still remember that your version of Android 4.3 Jelly bean before*you get the*firmware upgrade encountered an issue then you may only restore your device to the official Android 4.3 firmware. Same as it goes if you also have previously on Android 4.4.2 KitKat, then you may also only restores back your phone to the official 4.4.2 KitKat. *If you already on 4.4.2, you cannot actually downgrade back to the old software updates like 4.3, mark my word don’t do it.
So you understand I am a bit reluctant.
Can you take away my fear?

Say for instance I flash a Lollipop Vodafone rom, but instead I should have flashed a universal Kitkat rom (I mean no provider specific rom).
What are the chances I brick my phone permanently?

your phone is safe if you let ODIN default options
For example, Tab Options > Repartition normally is untick, if you tick repartition and you select a wrong ROM, you can brick your phone
Likewise PIT tab is very dangerous and if you aren't sure what are you doing with PIT tab is ver ysure you can brick your phone
NAND erase all? Do not you dare!

users brick phones by using wrong fw(fw meant for other phones) and/or options in odin.
going forward or back in android versions will not brick phones via odin if using the correct phones fw.
just use correct fw for your phone and only use the "ap" button in choosing the fw within in odin3. should be exactly like the pic below
afaik if bootloader is not locked you can go forward and back in fw versions, afaik the g900f does not have a locked bootloader.
either way it wont brick your phone but maybe just wont allow you to go backwards in versions.
feel free to correct me if im wrong

Thanks to your help I managed to flash a Lollipop firmware which seems to be running just fine.
So thanks very much.
Now can I upgrade tot Marshmallow the same way, via Odin3?

[STOCK ROM]I897UCKH3 - Android 2.3.4 i897/i896/i9088/i9010 - bootloader free

Hello everyone.
Here you can find the latest (25th of August 2011) stock Android gingerbread release for Samsung Captivate - i897.
It was not tested on i896/i9088 or i9010. If you tested it, please report back.
This package does not contain bootloaders so the risk of bricking your device is very limited (close to zero)
This is Android 2.3.4
Continuum Forum Thread Link
Download Links
Link 1
Link 2
The zip contains the .tar.md5 that you need to use in ODIN. Don't forget to extract before trying to flash it.
Odin 1.83 (tested ODIN versions 1.82 and 1.83)
How to (semi-dummy proof)
1. Reboot in recovery (check this thread for hints) and perform factory reset by selecting the option circled in red and then confirming the selection.Navigation is done with volume keys.
After the reset is done, power off the device either from recovery (if option is present) or by pulling out the battery.

3. Open ODIN
4. In ODIN click the PDA button
5. Select the extracted package
6. Click the START button in ODIN. It will flash the ROM and reboot by itself.
Note: you will need Samsung drivers for Galaxy S for following this guide. Easiest way to get them is to download and install Keis from here (make sure Kies is not running while using ODIN)
If you have them already then you're good to go.

holy **** cezar is still alive !! I must be sleep walkin

Hehe, saw the tweet from samfirmware and started working.
oh my cezar we misssss youuuuu
Really nice, i will try it soon.
Could it be that the new continuum be based on kh3? Just curious. As always great work.
I was happier to see a post from Cezar than I was to see the new release
^ Yeah. +1000 to that. We appreciate the Great Devs here !!
I'm currently running Apex 9.1 on i9000 bootloaders with the JV6 i9000 modem. If I were to flash this KH3, would I be able to flash the regular KB2 modem?
so GB bootloaders will no be a problem?, what about SU rights?
Rooted? Or just pure bone stock?
I'll probably flash either way, just curious.
Does this have the AT&T bootscreen at the beginning like the other ones had?
^^ Stock I believe. But others have reported that the Fugu Kernel swap for root works.

Does this mean that I can flash this from Stock 2.2 with its bootloaders?
^ No... U need the GB Bootloaders to run a Gingerbread Rom.
As far I know, there are i9000 Gingerbread bootloader and Captivate Gingerbread/Froyo bootloader, and those two are not competitive to run others ROM.
so... bootloader free version probably prevents hardbricking cappy (black screen of death, JTAG required) whom coming from i9000 ROM but still makes bootloop or cappy-!-pc screen I guess.
1. i9000 ROM -> bootloader included odin package -> fine
2. i9000 ROM -> bootloader free odin package -> hardbricking
3. i9000 ROM -> bootloader free (this thread) CWM package -> bootloop (guess)
4. Captivate Froyo and Gingerbread ROM -> dose not matter bootloader included or not
Please let me know if I am wrong.

Fugu does not work with mine as my cap reboots many times at lock screen. Need to have the specific one for the rom.
Afther flash the stock, everything run smoothly. Note that you have to very strictly follow the instruction of Cezar at the 1st post otherwise, may be your capt get stuck at ATT screen.

[Q] Help! Cannot boot into Custom Recovery

Hello, I cannot My AT&T Galaxy S4 into recovery mode. According to Boot Manager I have 2 recoveries already installed(CWM and TWRP) but every time I try reboot into recovery I get "Could not do Normal Boot ODIN MODE". I installed one of the recoveries using Goo manager and because it didn't work I tried with boot manager, What am I missing?
Goo Manager doesn't work for the AT&T S4... I did the same thing a while back. You need to use Safestrap for this phone. Look for the right version of it. I'm assuming you are using the stock ROM so find out what software version you are on and download the right version of Safestrap. Good luck.
Btw I forgot to add that you lost your stock recovery so you don't have one anymore. You can take it to a bestbuy and tell them Kies broke your phone and they can reflash it for you, or you can install a custom recovery.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I337 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Also, you can't have 2 recoveries installed at "same time". Find your build in settings. If mf3/mk2/nb1 you can't flash custom recoveries. Will also be limited to TW roms. You must use SafeStrap. So, probably need to get very familiar with it before going farther.
Good Luck on it--
Thanks!

Sorry for the picture size, don't know how to resize.
You need to use ODIN to flash the original firmware back to your phone (MK2 from the looks of it). Then, install safetrap using the instructions available in the Safestrap thread. Make sure you read the entire thread before you do anything. As already mentioned, only safestrap will work with your phone, not Goo Manager and not ROM Manager.

Is there a way I can flash the stock recovery myself? I'm not in the US. Also, I installed Safestrap without flashing the original firmware and everything seems to be working fine. Its all up to you if you wanna flash a custom ROM. Personally I don't because I have always had bad luck with modding phones and tablets. that's why I only root, but don't let that discourage you. Make sure that you have the correct ROM for your device before installing it.

It has actually been released. As per Sprint's device updates page for the 720 and the 720T...... Release Date: 5-20-15.
As for receiving the update, it could be 3-4 weeks before every S4 is served the update as it rolls out in stages, but indeed, some devices will start seeing the update today.
And again until someone actually receives it, it has not been released, only announced.
Anyways, this thread is pointless there are already other threads with discussions about the update, no need to start more. And you definitely don't NEED the update, you want it, your life doesn't depend on it.
In the meantime, Albe95 is 5.0 TW and is running great

It will be available on the forums in a few days most likely, you won't be getting a PM with the ROM before it's posted elsewhere for everyone.
If you want the ability to take an ota update, make sure you are 100% stock and unrooted. You can flash a stock tar to get to that state if you need to.
Edit: you can ask someone who has received the update to post the file or do a system dump

If one theoretically wanted to procure the update, an individual who has already updated to lollipop 5.0 could flash back to 4.4.2 using sammmoble firmware and Odin 3.0.9 on the PC with phone in download mode, factory reset if having boot problems with phone's recovery, check for the update again, perform an OTA Capture BEFORE downloading, copy the URL, install the update to 5.0, maybe factory reset again for completion's sake, and publish the URL here or upload the file to Dropbox, OneDrive, etc. for the rest of us. Such a job would require more time than most are willing to offer. But I will state my theory because I am egar myself. Best to you.

However, if there is a new bootloader in the new update, which there almost certainly is, a flash back to 4.4.2 would most certainly fail with other possible major issues incurred...including but not limited to a brick. No one should attempt this. We will get the new firmware and 5.0 rom soon enough.
This is how I get back from custom ROMs. Odin on the PC and download mode. Went from 5.0.1 GPE to TW 4.4.2 myself. No brick. Are you sure? Don't try the mobile odin.
But I stand corrected: Google OTA Capture. Post the URL if successful. Must be done BEFORE you hit download!

To those that plan on or have already updated to Marshmallow on the S5. You HAVE or WILL lose modding compatibility due to a/n security update Samsung implemented into the new Marshmallow Bootloader. This is unfortunate for all of the modding community of MULTIPLE Samsung devices. Hopefully, we can overcome this breach in personal security and allow modding once again on our devices. This update was RELEASED on: April 18th, 2016. It is known as the CPCA update for the "Samsung Galaxy S5". Modders beware of this update, and once again, DO NOT UPDATE YOUR DEVICES!

Yes multiple of users have tried downgrading to 5.0, but it refuses to do so. Looks like we are stuck with Marshmallow until there is some sort of exploit in the system. Will OK4 Work to downgrade the device. Does this also flash Bootloader?
WTH dude... you only open unwanted threads.. This one and anothers threads with rom's that not even work.
There ins't any problem with MM bootloader (I use a custom ROM with MM bootloader) and almost every custom roms don't work because they are based on LL blobs.
I will report you because I see too much threads open by you that don't have any contribution for the forum and members.

Dude, you were spot on! I flashed over OK4 bootloader and modem in Odin, then booted to recovery and flashed Bliss 6.0.1 rom and it worked!!!
After updating my Sprint Galaxy S5 to MM 6.0.1, my phone shuts down and reboots every time I uninstall an app. In addition, I no longer have access to the APN folder that allows me to use my MSL to modify and access the Hotspot function.
Anyone having these problems and is there a fix?
You can downgrade back to ok4 if your on a mm build like pca. I've done it multiple times with 100 percent success. The bootloader isn't locked when going back to ok4 from pca at this time but when or if this phone gets another update for mm this might change but for right now this isn't an issue. There isn't that much rom based on 6.0.1 mm for this phone that is TouchWiz at the moment for sprint besides insanity rom.

I should have looked at who the OP was before even opening this thread. I've been running marshmallow with absolutely no issues since it was leaked. I've flashed back to stock roms, flashed custom roms, flashed back to marshmallow, rooted, and debloated. So I don't see why the hell you posted this thread. Maybe YOU can't customize YOUR marshmallow rom because, as your track record shows with all, ALL, of YOUR roms, none of them work. So, maybe the problem isn't the marshmallow update, the problem is you.
Thanks zune70. I appreciate the information.

[ASK] Can I Cross Flash G935K To G935F?

No you can't.
But you can root it and instal any g935F custom rom thru TWRP.
no problem. G935F/S/K/L use same hardware and cpu.
to make it clear for future questions:
- You can't flash stock g935f to g935k, it won't work and you'll be stuck in download mode.
- You can flash custom g935f rom after root and twrp installation.
use odin and select right csc file, entering download mode , no need to root. if your phone have different cpu or a flash lock, odin will notify you an error message.
if you cannot boot after flashing, just flash your origin rom.
flash different cpu rom must use specific file and you cannot do it yourself.
some flash lock models also need special way to flash .

Thanks. I'm still hesitating to root my phone. I moved to China and there is Samsung pay, but cannot use it with a Korean rom and Chinese sim card... That's why I wanted to put an international rom (and also to remove the sound when I take picture!).
