[Q] Sprint LG V20 and just getting su w/o recovery, plus one more Q - LG V20 Questions & Answers

Hey all.
My understanding is that it will be quite some time, if at all, that we get a full on TWRP recovery for this phone. My question is, does it seem likely that at some point we will at least be able to obtain root while still on the stock ROM? I think it's called systemless root?
The other question is, anyone think there might be a a way, either through apk or something requiring said root, that could get the notification icons in the second display to "pulsate" and simulate a LED? That was something I was just curious about.
Loving the phone otherwise, fantastic device.
Thanks!

You questions are tied together. TWRP may or may never come. The problem of a locked bootloader. Given the fairly high traffic, thx Samsung Note 7 firebomb scandal, things are looking more up than they might have. But there's no telling.

But are they? Because I thought getting root and flashing TWRP were two different things. Can't one obtain root without needing to flash a recovery.img ?

They're different...but....They're tied a bit due to it being a development problem, needing people applying brainpower and being hard-headed enough to beat it.
The number of safeties in place by LG to prevent this is huge, but hopefully one or both can happen. Google too has been adding safety after safety to stop exploits root and otherwise....there was a story on a blog about a guy's quest to root and then put Debian on a recent Asus tablet....it was a soap opera story that was probably 10,000 words long. In the end he needed an oscilloscope, electronics breadboard, and a ton of input from electronics guys online.. I'll see if I can find it, it is a fun and frustrating insider's post on how these things sometimes happen. It was originally linked on the r/Android subreddit, but the devs nuked it because it was "too technical" for that audience.

unroot incredible?

this may seem like a silly question, but i have to return my incredible bec they are sending me a replacement, dead pixel, so before i try to root i would like to have it unrooted before i send it back...
so how do you unroot it?
thanx all
At the risk of starting a flamewar (and none of this is directly aimed at the OP):
A lot people need to chill on this. This root method is not ready for prime time yet (that's why they made the disclaimer that it's only really for power users).
As an average user, there is almost nothing gained by having root at this point (other than removing city id and MAYBE gaining tethering). I mean seriously, people who don't even know how to install the android sdk on their computers have no business attempting this.
The main reason most people want root is for custom roms and there aren't any yet.
To answer your question, yes, you can easily undo it with a factory wipe/flash, but again, what's the point in trying it when you have nothing to do with the privileges?
Use one of the RUU post in this forum pre ota or the ota one.

BOOO!
I've been seeing this kind of presumptuous junk pop up again in the Inc thread around the root issue, just like it used to around root season in late '08 for the G1. The one lesson I learned was this:
STOP TELLING PEOPLE THEY'RE NOT SMART/GOOD/CRAFTY ENOUGH TO ROOT!
And if you haven't checked recently, there are a ton of root-only apps on the market. Maybe he just likes #-signs better than $-signs. Whatever his reasons are, just let people be. This forum wouldn't exist if it weren't for natural curiosity.
really though at this point it's kinda based on the SD card you have an timing. to unroot though you just download and run the RUU on the forums here.

Dude,
Aside from the fact that they can break stuff (up to and including bricking their phone - yes I realize this process resulting in a brick is unlikely, but it's still possible), there's also another good reason... security. A lot of these people aren't 'linux guys' and don't even really understand what exactly 'root' even means. I bet $20 that if you had everyone in this forum in a room and walked around with a clipboard asking people 'What is UID 0?' maybe 20-30% of people would know the answer. That means that up to 80% of them probably don't quite understand all of the things inside this can of worms they're trying to open.
My comments weren't intended to be presumptuous, or to look down on people, or to thumb my nose at them, etc. I'm only pointing out that for average (or probably even most) users, there aren't really any everyday reasons to go through this.... especially if you don't know what you're doing. All risk, no reward. And that's exactly why the developers of the method are advising these types of users to wait for something that's more suitable for mass consumption.
Ya I love my phone the way it is, all I wanted to do is wifi tether haha. I rooted just fine and im no expert at all. It took about 20 minutes.
Thank you! To the answer on how to quickly unroot. I appreciate it...

Is there a way to unroot without wiping the phone?
Since when did wiping the phone remove root?
If you RUU the phone to unroot it is wiped and will need to re-do all the settings. I dont want to have to do that.

New to XDA, ETA on custom Roms for MF3?

I understand it will be out when its out, but I just migrated from iOS and I would always see postings from certain sites on when the next Jailbreak is coming. I am getting used to Android and I was wondering if anyone has heard anything and if not is this the best place to follow to find out?
There are already mf3 based roms...check the development section

If you are on the AT&T S4 that has been updated to MF3 we will have to wait until a bootloader exploit is found. There is NO ETA for this and it may take a while... maybe never. Just keep an eye on one of our many bootloader threads and pledge to pay the dev if you want to help motivate.

I think the problem is that I purchased my GS4 and it came with MF3 pre-installed. Right now they have MDL Roms with MF3 features in it. Last I checked there was no way to flash custom Roms onto a phone that has MF3 on it!

Thanks for that information. That is a bummer to hear the realistic possibility that it may never come. I guess I would be extremely bummed as rooting is the main reason I came to Android and bought the S4. I was naive in the sense I thought all S4 were the same. Little did I know there was so many variations. I even came to the forums before I bought it but everything seemed like a foreign language coming from iOS.
Any idea who I might be able to talk to to Pledge some cash to see that it gets worked on?
And also is there any way to see a MOD about this captcha restriction lol!

Thanks for all that info. I am an idiot honestly that's all that can be said. I should have done a little more research before I made a purchase. I traded my iPhone 5 with a little cash on top for a brand new Galaxy S4 on AT&T (My carrier) had I known all of this before I would have searched Craigslist for a T-Mobile version and then sim unlocked it for AT&T...
Guess I learned my lesson, I really wish I could afford to go buy a T-Mobile S4 too but they sell for like $500-$600 out of contract.... Just can't do it and I am stuck with AT&T right now. Meanwhile my buddy who told me I should buy an S4 is laughing his rooted and recovered ass off right now lol...

What can you do with a root if you are not able to install custom roms?

You can install a lot of mods which will archive a lot of the same things as a custom rom. You can remove bloat, theme, add things... it is pretty awesome. See the development sections and the themes and app sections to see all the awesome stuff. Some people always stay with stock and just add mods

...you can also do some serious damage, and without recovery, you can easily "Brick" your device... Please be careful what you remove/change/mod, as if you bootloop or fubar your current OS, you will NOT be able to Odin Back to stock to recover just yet...
removing some of the Samsung Apps will break things when they are removed, and TiBU can't always put them back... for now I just froze all the bloatware, and won't remove anything until there is a way to go "Back to Stock"
Hope this helps.

Yeah, thanks for clarifying, I should also let the OP know I have the S4 Active which has the ability to ODIN back to stock if something goes wrong. I do not know if you will have that pleasure so think twice and read before trying anything
I have decided I probably won't take advantage of the root until I can safely make a recovery. I actually posted a $25.00 pledge (I know it isn't much) towards finding a fix for newer users of the S4. People who have to warranty their phones will likely have the update installed.
Crossing my fingers now.

This would be on hold for awhile until another bootloader fix surfaces, then you will see a whole bunch of MF3 custom roms.

That's probably a good choice and you can enjoy the S4 i337 without doing anything, it is a great phone.
Of course, rooting -basic rooting using the new technique for the MF3 rom-- seems to work well enough for many so far. So please don't view it as jumping off a cliff and hoping to find a vine on the way down or something so bleak.
For your model, which does not currently have as many recovery options as the earlier MDL versions, it certainly pays to be careful and also to understand your options for return or exchange if you do muck up the phone. The trick is to understand the specific risks up front. In this case, what can go wrong in the rooting process and how often does it seem to occur.
Read the XDA thread on this new rooting exploit for MF3 and see exactly what others did to get root without ruining their phone -and do only and exactly the steps that have worked for others. The rooting process takes only a couple of minutes --but so does bricking your phone when it rooting is done incorrectly.
The differences between success and failure are:
1. How much you understand of the procedure?
2. How much you have prepared in advance for what you are doing and trying to accomplish? and
3. How carefully and patiently are you doing each and every step of the process?
I've rooted several phones and tablets and been fortunate to get it right most of the time, or to be able to recover when I did not get it right. Unfortunately, in your case it appears that you need to get it right the first time for rooting, and many many folks have. So while this is very different from the iPhone "click on this site and you're jailbroken" approach, it is not low-percentage surgery either :good::good::fingers-crossed: So, I'd recommend that you continue to read up on that new root technique for MF3:
-- read to see how it is being accepted, what kind of feedback folks have and also
-- how safe/or comfortable folks seem to be in using it. and
-- what problems have come from trying it -bricks? soft bricks? recoverable or not?
I've read the original post (OP) on the exploit, but not all the information is in the one thread.. I am sure there are several threads that echo this development. . . Might have even more information too. After, that you will know if you want to try the rooting step. Or not.
Good Luck!
P.S.
- While root does not sound as valuable as being able to switch roms and use full customizations, it does provide quite a bit. For example: you can add (root-requiring) apps like "Titanium Backup" (which not only backsup all of your programs and data, but also can "freeze" programs that are useless and running in the background when you don't want them to do so!) Or Greenify, which has the same functionality for dealing with unwanted apps (better actually!) and apps like Cerberus to help you keep track of your phone or find it if lost.
- Rooting to add these types of add ons, without fiddling with some of the more invasive mods that others have already warned about in the other posts, may be acceptable middle ground for you -it does provide customizations for your phone without stretching the safe use limits very far.
Take your time. . . keep reading and move at your own pace. It's hard to come here, start reading and simply "get it" on first bounce. . .It's just a shame that your friend with the older S4 didn't provide a couple of hints or tips about which versions to by ("buy the red ones"... :laugh so you could have picked up one that is easily customizable. . .(of course if you are still in the 14 day window you might go back and try to exchange for another one and look for a MDL version -according to some posts they seem to be the red ones that no one wanted to buy early on . . . . hmm
Good Luck!

Shield Kill Switch

Hi figured we could use our own separate thread to discuss the killswitch Nvidia supposedly put in place on our old Shield tablets and see what has worked for those who have received their replacement units. If you've gotten a replacement please share if your old unit has been destroyed or not...if not please let others know what the old tablet has on it or what you did to attempt to prevent the brick! Thanks for helping us all out here!
As I said in the other thread, I received my new one, and my old one is still usable on rooted latest stock, unlocked bootloader, with the only app missing being Chrome for some reason. Nothing else disabled or uninstalled. Maybe they haven't turned on the server that sends the kill signal yet.
If the company wants the other device back (dunno if that is true), why keep it? You are breaking a deal while making it less appeling for companies to do this type of thing...+its a saftey risk for you and others around you.
Nvidia said they do not need it back
ManualG on the Nvidia forum said they are not requiring you send it back
"We don't require you to send it back to us to receive the replacement and are collecting them only to make it less of a burden on everyone else who dont have drop off locations like that close by." So you can keep it if you want ?
16 gig tablet, got it this morning. My original is still functional, it was stock rom, rooted with xposed on it. That's as much modding as I've done with mine.
does anyone have more informations about this killswitch?
Is it a service that needs to be deactivated or deleted or a kernel feature?
I just want to make sure it doesn't kill my old tablet when I set up the new one.
Alternatively, I could just flash an older factory image or custom firmware.
From what I've read on other forums (i.e. reddit) most have indicated that the killswitch is embedded in the bootloader and will activated on the defective tablet once the replacement tablet is registered on the nvidia side. I of course cannot confirm for this to be the case but just sharing what others have reported.
yea but it must communicate with the server then and that only works when Android is booted up and all communication drivers loaded.
So there must be another service running in Android that gives this information to the bootloader to kill itself.
If it's bootloader based, flash a bootloader from one of the older recovery images.
Will try that. BL from Update 2.2.2 should be fine?
actually if I flash it back to 2.2.2 it should be fine too since the changes to 3.X aren't that big
That should work just fine.
big time noob question but where are you getting the old bootloaders from to flash?
Until somebody's tablet gets deactivated and a log is captured during the deactivation process, everything said here or anywhere else is just speculation.

Oh I completely agree. I'm all for conversion. But I don't want people to get the wrong impression, like trying to flash an older bootloader. That may stop the deactivation, but it also may not. Its only speculation at this point.

Well said. I apologize if my post came through as a solution. I was only mentioning that as folks had mentioned a possible bootloader lock.
Any thoughts on whether flashing CM would serve as a way to circumvent the killswitch? I see that release for this tablet is already available http://forum.xda-developers.com/shi...-cyanogenmod-12-shield-tablet-lte-na-t3055043. Thoughts?

To me, this is the most logical place to start at this point! Maybe it works, maybe it doesn't, but unlocking the bootloader, rooting, and installing a custom rom seem like a good starting place. If the stock devices are definitely getting wiped anyways, any changes we make now can't hurt the chances of keeping it alive!

Terrified to Root but desperately want to

I just got my Moto X Pure Edition (THIS one) and I really want to root it and get all the things I had with my G3 and back when I had an JB'd iPhone 4s, but my experience with the G3 was terrible.
I ended up having to RMA it 4 times through my insurance because there was something I was using on the G3 that slowed it to a vista-esque pace, and despite lots of reading on this site and others I managed to brick it :silly: 4 times :silly: in 4 different ways just trying to put it back to stock. It cost me far too much money but I was stupid enough to keep trying before finally settling on stock to avoid more issues.
I love this new phone, but I know I could tweak it more to what I like and from what it looks like in Heisenberg's Guide it is fairly safe and simple as far as roots go. I feel so stupid having screwed up with the LG that I don't want to try it. I'm a CS major and I've spent so much time messing with all sorts of things I never thought it would be a problem.
So my question is, within the realm of using Xposed and a few root apps/functions (no custom ROMs or anything just because I can't afford not having a phone for a week if I ruin it again), is it relatively safe to root the X Pure and are these tools (Universal Tool, Restore to stock tool) or a manual set of steps a good bet for returning to stock and removing root? I just want to make sure if I end up over my head I can get back to stock and be happy with what is already a great phone. Sorry if I sound like a huge _____ but I'm still in school and I want to avoid further grief as best I can.
From what I've been hearing, the 808 is a tricky processor... Besides xposed and regular terminal code changes, such as screen density, you should be good. Although, if your going in and messing with code idk what to say, experienced devs are even having a tough time getting this thing to boot on their custom ROMs...
You probably shouldn't mess with your phones anymore.

Another thing just to keep in mind when talking people about your qualifications, saying you are getting your Computer Science degree is pretty broad. First, we don't know what year you're in and second we don't know your concentration. I have a BBA for instance. A BBA in what though? If I went applying to random jobs, or trying to network that would leave more questions than answers. What do I have a BBA in? Well mine is in Management, so yes I can do basic accounting, financing, marketing, but my concentration is being able to interpret financial data and making decisions that would benefit a company or organization. Does that make me advanced enough to be an accountant, even though we both have BBAs? Hell no! Same goes for CS. You may be getting your computer science degree, but are you majoring in Network Security, Hardware, C++, Java, Oracle, etc... There is so much information missing that just stating "I'm getting my CS degree" isn't enough for anyone to give you a solid answer, especially not knowing what year you are in. If you are a junior, then you've just barely scratched the surface of what you will be studying for the next 2 years. Just a little FYI for future sakes

Well that's helpful.
Didn't think to specify, my bad, yeah I'm just a junior and I feel like I haven't learned much in the way of things. I just want to get a few small things from xposed and others, no plans on changing anything myself

You bricked 4 G3s. It's time to find a new hobby. I suggest one that doesn't include the destruction of expensive electronics.

I own Oneplus One and rooted immediately with blisspop rom. I can't use phn without root access coz almost all ma apps need root permission. Yes its risky to root a costly device but if u need it so desperately den u should definitely root it....
Again, thanks for the positive input. I bricked them following the stock flashing methods on this website, I wasn't just shooting in the dark. And out of another half dozen phones I've only ever had an issue with the G3. Can you not? I'd like to learn here, not argue.
U having plm installing recovery on ur g3???
When it comes to just simply rooting and installing xposed, I don't see how you can brick it following step by step instructions. I will say this. If you brick it and you can't figure out how to get it back to stock, Motorola has made it clear you're on your own. So there's that, but using a simple toolkit can make a worlds difference in preventing mistakes. Yes, you'll feel like an amateur, and let's be honest, you are right now, but it beats losing $400.
You also just got it and you have no idea if you have any hardware issues that many have had to RMA within the first week for. So maybe sitting on it for a week or 2 couldn't hurt to eliminate that possibility as well (Bad CPU/GPU, Speaker, Light Leakage, loose parts when shaken, excess battery drain/heat, and turbo charge randomly not working, etc.). Motorola/Lenovo were at first being lenient about replacing these even with unlocked bootloaders and even giving people a month to send these back, they are wising up and change the rules since people have been making such a big fuss about the bootloader thing, and posting about the one month holding time (now I've read recently it's 3 days?), so just be careful, that's all.

Sounds like a solid plan. With the G3 rooting was always easy but the only known way that I had found for the t mobile model was to use the LG flashing tool that looked a lot like the one they used in-house to restore it, and despite following a pretty straightforward guide there were 3 different errors I got right towards the end of the process that would lock the phone in a download mode state. After using TWRP to get it back to being usable I'd still be stuck with root, and trying a few other ways would screw me.
As far as using the tools, are the 2 I linked in the OP the proper ones to be using? I'll definitely hold off on it for a while to make sure nothing comes up, thanks for that info. I'm guessing the 2 year protection plan is moot if I'm stuck with no way to erase evidence of a software issue arising from root, so that's a thing to think about as well. Do you know if unlocking the bootloader voids that protection plan? I'm looking for the TOS.

I could not have said this any better.
Judging from the attitudes of you two it's a wonder I stopped using this forum. Thanks fellas, really shows the quality of the community here.
I have always rooted my phones from my original HTC incredible, galaxy nexus, HTC DNA, and HTC ONE M8... that being said I am very familiar with HTC and how they work and I always had the HTC RUU file ready in case of emergency but never had to use it. I'm not sure if Motorola has a RUU file or a Fastboot IMG like Nexus devices that can bring your phone back from the dead as this is my first Moto because I never wanted to deal with the encrypted bootloader on the VZW moto phones.
I honestly can say that I have been finding root less and less needed since my M8 and I dont think I will unlock or root my Pure Edition.
The reason is that there is no bloat that I cant get rid of, I see no need for a custom kernel since the newer processors are really fast, it basically runs stock android so its not bogged down by Sense or touchwiz.
I honestly can say I like the minor additions Moto has made with the Pure Edition... I have used exposed and I really dont see the use for most of its functions for more than a week before its just gimmicky.
Once updates are stopped or the Development community is way ahead of OTA updates we will still have an easy OEM process to unlock root and flash. But for now I'm sticking with what I paid for... The Moto experience

If you follow step by step instruction you will be ok.... I have rooted tons of phones and bricked a couple but was able to fix them. Its a chance you take but hey if you mess up it is a excuse to get a new cell lol. But honestly your streak with rooting is bad, maybe you shouldn't try anymore.

I'm sorry I offended you. Based on your history I think it a bad idea for you to mess with your phone. Not what you wanted to hear but I honestly think it's the truth. Not all computer science majors can handle phone tech. How many of your classmates have iPhones? How many of them with Android phones root?

Come on, don't pigeon hole everyone on XDA. You had to have known you were going to receive some sarcastic replies. That's like Plaxico Burress asking what kind of gun he should buy next. The consensus here seems to be genuine. You shouldn't mess with root anymore but it's your money. Thing is, rooting is not hard and not dangerous if you follow directions closely, yet you've managed to brick several devices. I rooted my phone to install Xposed but due to battery issues I have stopped using it. Look in the Xposed thread for more info. I would say just wait, its not worth it now IMO.
IMO, the only reason to root is to install AdAway.
Can't stand Ads. But other than that, the experience that Motorola has set up for us is perfect. I won't be adding anything else like Xposed, or install a custom ROM until I get bored with my phone, which will probably be in another six months. I've set myself up with an unlocked bootloader and root for when the time comes though. But for now, I'm happy.
I gotta say that to me (sophmore in college as a Biology major, completely unrelated to compsci), it seems pretty hard to brick a phone just trying to root it. Especially with the very detailed guides that Hesisenberg has set up for us, thank that man.
You gotta decide if what you plan on doing with your root is worth it though. I spent about 1.5 hours rooting my phone, and I'm not even sure that the time was worth AdAway.

Sm T580 rooting hell

Ever phone or tablet I buy is always the one that cant be rooted without a pc. Everytime Odin required, so sick of it. I thought they were supposed to make a universal platform that all androids adhered to. What happened to that?

Name a current device that doesn't need a PC to be rooted? Is that not universal enough?

No thats not universal enough. Go through the compatability list for framaroot, or master root and that will give your answer. I just want my phones to be on the same level. All on that list or not but there shouldnt be an in between

Ok humour me. Show me evidence of one device that either of those root exploits has been successful with since Android 5.

Okay but how am I going to show proof? Those one click root apps wouldnt be around if they didnt work...Look at towelroot as well, and also kingroot. Lots of options even though I have no proof

Rooting a tablet is a security risk that manufacturers don't WANT users to take. They want rooting to be difficult. So, IMO, it is down right silly to think they'd intentionally let some apps, like the ones you mentioned, defeat their purpose. And NONE of those apps work on a high percentage of the tablets on the market today.
If having a tablet that can be rooted by one of them is that important to you, then I'd suggest you check the list BEFORE you make your purchase rather than whining about it when they don't work.

They DON'T work that is the point. The fact that you actually mentioned towel root implies that you've been trawling the Internet and you don't quite know where things are up to with root.
Those exploits have long since been patched. Pretty much no one click root's work on any recent device.
Google have patched all current exploits. Any decent manufacturer should have updated their firmware to include the patches.
Anything MM onwards is unlikely to work with one of these one click root apps.
Any device that does simply means the manufacturer doesn't care about security or has abandoned the device.
My point here is that pretty much no device works with any of these one click root's anymore.
You have a device made by a manufacturer that cares about security.
The very thing you seem to be whining about.
Millions of devices are currently using the only real root solution avaliable, Magisk, which requires a PC.
@lewmur pretty much nailed it.
If you want a device that works with one of these one click exploits, sell your up to date device and buy yourself an old banger running kitkat.

Oh but i do check before I make a purchase. But everytime for one reason or another things change or an update comes and all of a sudden, now you need Odin. That why im pissed kid.
Also im sure the companies arent letting anyone root by choice. They would rather have you pay $1200 for an official unlocked phone...lol...But yes those apps can and will work on many phones running 8.1 and before.. perhaps you should do your homework instead of sticking your head in the sand

Hey cool story but it doesnt apply here. Im sure you can see the title, read it....t580....Hardly cutting edge stuff. If i could downgrade i would but i cant without a pc. I accidently upgraded my tablet and screwed myself. Those apps wont work on a galaxy S10 or galaxy 4 tablet but if i hadnt upgraded i would have used that and it woulda worked. Is chainfire around? He could shed some light if hes still on this

Not being rude, but you really have no idea.
If you actually understood anything about root and kept with the times, you would be aware why non of these exploits work on anything beyond Lollipop. Marshmallow if you're lucky and haven't updated.
Supersu stopped working with most devices at Nougat and not at all with Oreo or anything beyond.
Over and out.

I understand all of that just fine, thats not what i was talking about. I mentioned chainfire not because of supersu but because when I used to be on this site daily chainfire would help me out every now and then. Im going to assume hes not so active in here anymore, but maybe im wrong.

Chain fire sold supersu to a Chinese developer who has since abandoned it.
Chain fire announced his retirement from development a while back.
Magisk is now the only true root solution and even Magisk is constantly having to evolve to keep in the game.
All the other solutions you refer to were simply exploits that leveraged a vulnerability in the running system and have long since been patched even on older devices.
Magisk is not an exploit that leverages a vulnerability, but is a chain of modifications to the running system which is implemented both at the installation stage and at boot time. Similar to how Supersu used to work, but in a more advanced way which creates its own environment.

That's BS. I've had a T580 since 2016 and you've never been able to root one without Odin. There is NO WAY it is on a list for one of those apps. If you just bought the T580 and checked and found it on one, name the one. Put up or shut up.
