Hello!
Some of you maybe have noticed that when the Galaxy S faces the sun, in auto-brightness mode, the color are suddenly boosted by a crazy amount in an attempt to preserve color saturation perception despite the incoming light.
Do you think this is a useful feature helping readability or does it do more harm than good ?
I can disable or tweak it very easily in Voodoo color. I have mixed feelings about this, that's why it's still on, but some people asked me to disable it.
I need your opinion and experience

Note: this color boost is associated only to the automatic 100% brightness level.
that is actually just brightness at 65% or higher
by default on regular operation when the brightness is set to auto it is always below 50% that's why people complain about colour being pale and such
if you set the brightness to 65% or more you can appreciate the full bloom effect of the SAMOLED screen vs AMOLED
i use a simple brightness widget to set it how i want, but it's mostly on auto, except when i want to WOW! people

I didn't manage to reproduce it using artificial lights, seems that any light i have is not as bright as the sun ^^
i do use the phone outdoor almost on a daily basis, specially during lunch time when we walk to the restaurants meanwhile checking for emails, forums, weather, prices, another restaurant nearby, etc, etc.
so i've seen the screen colour/brightness changes in many different occassions.
unless there is another method to control the colour without controlling the brightness and vice versa, then i'm pretty sure i'm getting the same effects when i manually slide the brightness bar all the way to 100%, 85%, 75%, and 65%
anything less than 60% wont show the blooming colour effect

This special color boost (really extreme color boost) appends:
In auto brightness mode
When it's bright enough to make the auto-brightness mode reach the 100% level (named gamma 24)
When already at auto 100% and screen facing the sun.

So far I've only experienced that once in my 3 month old SGS. I usually use it indoors.
I think you can replicate that by ticking Outdoor Visibility in the camera app.
Seen it alot of times, It does seem to help quite well, So i say keep it

yeah, that is what i call the colour blooming effect, just like in the PC blooming effect on the video cards

Absolutely! the Outdoor mode in Camera and Video apps are similar (but are triggered manually)

woops... just tried the Outdoor Visibility and it is not the same as what I experienced before. You really must be outside & under the bright sun. I'll try it again tomorrow.
it just does it to the entire screen but stronger, there is an widget to control screen modes and it can be toggled manually when set to 100%

I pointed at the sensor with a 12LED flashlight (Need to be quite close for the blooming effect to activate, ~5-10cm), and it bloomed away after 3-5 seconds.
I've never been bothered by it and never really noticed it in bright light, so I would think it's a positive feature that helps readability in strong sunlight.

You cannot reach this mode with manual controls.
It depends on data measured by the light sensor, it's in kernel.
well i guess i'll have to install your Modifications, to see if there's really a difference
but from my point of view, when the level at set to 100% looks the same as when the phone is working outdoor under bright sunlight 12 noon lunch time.

I say keep it. It seems like it would be functional. Looking forward to the warmer colors at more brightness levels, as my phone very rarely runs at 100% brightness.
What I don't like (maybe others agree?) is the sudden drop in brightness at low ambient light levels (not complete darkness).
Thanks for your work on the color issue. This is really what I look forward most to in future voodoo releases!

Anything that makes the screen better in the sun is a good thing.
Even with the SAMOLED, things can sometimes be harder to see outside, especially while web browsing.
It doesn't matter if the colors are off in the pictures when you can't even read the web page.
Is it possible to make these sort of things configurable by an app on the phone?
Or must these sort of settings be hard-coded into the kernel?
I want to buy a phone that can do widescreen photography with a minimal budget and the xperia neo seems to fit best. Xperia ray has too small a screen for my liking so thats not an option.
Anyways researching the xperia neo I have encountered one big problem, it seems it's display is quite reflective and not as good as the xperia arc outdoors?? Can anyone please confirm if this is the case?
Bad performance outdoors is a complete deal breaker for me. However I have used xperia arc and I found it's display to have excellent outdoor performance. I assumed the xperia neo would be the same but seems like it isnt from the reviews.
One reviewer noted that it's screen is recessed unlike the arc which brings more reflectivity.
Don't know about the screens but I'd say get the Arc if the budget allows it.
Bigger screen, looks better and has more devs like (not 100% sure about devs).

It cracks.
I cant take chances because we dont have any SE service centers here, we get no warranty so if my arc cracks then I'll just have to live with it.
Plus there are a couple of other issues I have with the arc. I want a phone with a camera button and the one on the arc I find as good as not having one at all. Secondly the placement of the sensor at the back is going to cause some trouble as well. The neo has perfect placement and what seems like a fairly comfortable camera button.
Plus it's also noticeably cheaper so I wont be paying the same money for a smaller screen.
Then get the Neo if you find it so much better

If you want camera then BUY camera...if you want phone..then buy phone. Trust me...you don't get 2in1 good phone and camera together

I have both, and both have their advantages and problems.
Arc:
+ Display is much better both in colors (warmer, everything looks quite cold on the Neo)
+ Display has more brightness and better in hard sunlight
- Camera position is annoying from time to time
- Shutter key is hard to press
Neo:
+ Better shutter key
+ Better camera placement
- Display has colder tones
- Display not as bright or legible in sunlight
The difference is small, but I think I'd prefer the Neo as a cameraphone simply because of the better camera placement and shutter button.

Use the disable auto brightness app from the market, or flash MIUI, and the Neo's display will become very bright too.
I agree with your last point. I've had phones with a corner placed camera before, and the lens is much easier to cover. (Only when holding it with two hands in landscape though).

I never said it's so much better.
The deal breaker for me more than anything are the cracks, the price difference isnt huge.

Shouldnt the auto brightness make it go maximum bright under sunlight? Or does the auto brightness puts a cap on maximum brightness as well?
Whats the latest version for the neo? With the neo V the automatic brightness is disabled at 100% brightness, is that feature not available on the neo?

I realise phone camera shortcomings and I do have a fairly good sony cybershot camera but I really cant be bothered to carry it around everywhere and thus many a times I am in a situation where I have no camera and a crappy phone.
I wont be rooting my phone, I am not that sort of a power user. I know for sure the neo V disables auto brightness at 100% and has a really bright screen. It would totally suck if sony hasnt brought this feature to the neo, I mean it's a software thing afterall so it cant be a problem for them can it.
Neo and Neo V are identical aside the camera sensor. If you put the brightness on the Neo on 100% it'll just use the maximum brightness at all times.

Auto brightness is indeed disabled when brightness is at 100%, but if you install the disable auto brighness app, the brightness seems like 2 times as high when you set it at 100%. So yes, the brightness is limited without the auto brightness app.
I feel no problems with shutter key on my Arc S.

Now isnt that just stupid sony ericsson.
The display test of xperia neo on gsmarena reveals a 100% brightness of 513nits which is quite remarkable. How come other websites were saying that the display is dim? What gives this is so confusing.
The neo has a contrast of above 1500 at gsmarena review, thats pretty unbelievable surely they have got something wrong?

I think I might have figured this out. In the xperia arc review at gsmarena they show a max brightness of just 134 for xperia neo. They hadnt yet reviewed the neo. One month later they give a full review to neo and it's max brightness is off the roof.
Was there some software problem that was later fixed? Maybe most of the reviews talking about poor sunlight performance had the version which was seriously crippled with brightness?
I use the widgetsoid widget to control the brightness (AUTO) on my ARC and it works really well.
As for the cracks - had my phone for over 4 months and not a single crack at all.
Have found the camera very good in good light and ok in poorer light. Yes the button is tricky so I use the 'touch' screen option.
Only downside (from any camera phone) is that there isn't any optical zoom but there is nothing you can do about it.

I am totally buying the neo if it's display is actually what it seems like at gsmarena.
0.31 black with 513 brightness, no other non sony phone can do this with an LCD.
I need more xperia neo owners to comment please and especially those who have used both arc and neo.

The auto-brightness on the N4 is too conservative - it's always lower than it should be, especially in outdoor conditions.
I've tried some apps (Velis, Lux Lite, and others) but they tend to flicker and have annoying notification icons (even when I disable them from All Apps).
Any suggestions?
*Giving Lux Lite + N4 Plugin another try, I believe I missed out on all its features the first time. Will post back tomorrow.
It's becoming a cliche for me to recommend this app, but if you are rooted, give Gravity Box for Xposed Framework a try.
Not sure why its lower for you outdoor. Auto brightness works for me outdoor.
There are couple tricks that works for me with nexus 4. When I am in home, I bring the brightness to 0%. Outdoor, I leave the brightness on auto. At night I use an app *screen filter* by haxor industry; its free and works great. You can bring the brightness to the lowest level as possible.

Yeah, the flash is really bad. Even my Galaxy s3 had double the brightness than z5 but to be in topic then I don't think so. You ain't gonna "overclock" that LED bulb in there
You want a better torch or you think the camera flash is inadequate? The flash only has to be bright enough to complement the camera sensor - anything above that is just a bonus.
I find the Xperia Z1 got great flash. Just enough to avoid over exposure and lit the target correctly and great fairly neutral flash color temperature to keep the scene integrity as high as possible. Though I got the white one and newer revision so no flash light bleed. I assume they fixed flash bleeding with newer Z phones and different colors. Got example photos?
I miss my Galaxy S3's torch.. it really was a ****ing torch guys... my Dad has it now and he only uses it for the time and the torch!

Yes, I've noticed the same. If there was a way to change the black level for the stock camera, it would be great. It takes really nice photos in the daylight. Only low light photos are so-so (like with most devices...)
So, I'm still testing under Pie, but I have quite strong impression that after latest Moto Camera update the image quality in low light has been noticeably improved. For sure this "overexposure" is gone.
