I want to buy a phone that can do widescreen photography with a minimal budget and the xperia neo seems to fit best. Xperia ray has too small a screen for my liking so thats not an option.
Anyways researching the xperia neo I have encountered one big problem, it seems it's display is quite reflective and not as good as the xperia arc outdoors?? Can anyone please confirm if this is the case?
Bad performance outdoors is a complete deal breaker for me. However I have used xperia arc and I found it's display to have excellent outdoor performance. I assumed the xperia neo would be the same but seems like it isnt from the reviews.
One reviewer noted that it's screen is recessed unlike the arc which brings more reflectivity.
Don't know about the screens but I'd say get the Arc if the budget allows it.
Bigger screen, looks better and has more devs like (not 100% sure about devs).

It cracks.
I cant take chances because we dont have any SE service centers here, we get no warranty so if my arc cracks then I'll just have to live with it.
Plus there are a couple of other issues I have with the arc. I want a phone with a camera button and the one on the arc I find as good as not having one at all. Secondly the placement of the sensor at the back is going to cause some trouble as well. The neo has perfect placement and what seems like a fairly comfortable camera button.
Plus it's also noticeably cheaper so I wont be paying the same money for a smaller screen.
Then get the Neo if you find it so much better

I have both, and both have their advantages and problems.
Arc:
+ Display is much better both in colors (warmer, everything looks quite cold on the Neo)
+ Display has more brightness and better in hard sunlight
- Camera position is annoying from time to time
- Shutter key is hard to press
Neo:
+ Better shutter key
+ Better camera placement
- Display has colder tones
- Display not as bright or legible in sunlight
The difference is small, but I think I'd prefer the Neo as a cameraphone simply because of the better camera placement and shutter button.

Use the disable auto brightness app from the market, or flash MIUI, and the Neo's display will become very bright too.
I agree with your last point. I've had phones with a corner placed camera before, and the lens is much easier to cover. (Only when holding it with two hands in landscape though).

I never said it's so much better.
The deal breaker for me more than anything are the cracks, the price difference isnt huge.

Shouldnt the auto brightness make it go maximum bright under sunlight? Or does the auto brightness puts a cap on maximum brightness as well?
Whats the latest version for the neo? With the neo V the automatic brightness is disabled at 100% brightness, is that feature not available on the neo?

I realise phone camera shortcomings and I do have a fairly good sony cybershot camera but I really cant be bothered to carry it around everywhere and thus many a times I am in a situation where I have no camera and a crappy phone.
I wont be rooting my phone, I am not that sort of a power user. I know for sure the neo V disables auto brightness at 100% and has a really bright screen. It would totally suck if sony hasnt brought this feature to the neo, I mean it's a software thing afterall so it cant be a problem for them can it.
Neo and Neo V are identical aside the camera sensor. If you put the brightness on the Neo on 100% it'll just use the maximum brightness at all times.

Auto brightness is indeed disabled when brightness is at 100%, but if you install the disable auto brighness app, the brightness seems like 2 times as high when you set it at 100%. So yes, the brightness is limited without the auto brightness app.
I feel no problems with shutter key on my Arc S.

Now isnt that just stupid sony ericsson.
The display test of xperia neo on gsmarena reveals a 100% brightness of 513nits which is quite remarkable. How come other websites were saying that the display is dim? What gives this is so confusing.
The neo has a contrast of above 1500 at gsmarena review, thats pretty unbelievable surely they have got something wrong?

I think I might have figured this out. In the xperia arc review at gsmarena they show a max brightness of just 134 for xperia neo. They hadnt yet reviewed the neo. One month later they give a full review to neo and it's max brightness is off the roof.
Was there some software problem that was later fixed? Maybe most of the reviews talking about poor sunlight performance had the version which was seriously crippled with brightness?
I use the widgetsoid widget to control the brightness (AUTO) on my ARC and it works really well.
As for the cracks - had my phone for over 4 months and not a single crack at all.
Have found the camera very good in good light and ok in poorer light. Yes the button is tricky so I use the 'touch' screen option.
Only downside (from any camera phone) is that there isn't any optical zoom but there is nothing you can do about it.

I am totally buying the neo if it's display is actually what it seems like at gsmarena.
0.31 black with 513 brightness, no other non sony phone can do this with an LCD.
I need more xperia neo owners to comment please and especially those who have used both arc and neo.
Nevermind I bumped into this thread and it seems like gsmarena got some magical units and most other people dont experience such brightness levels.

I compared photos with my girl note 2 this night and i see that her phone make way better pictures night with the flash....so i try a lot of settings and nothing....then i made 2 front pictures and xperia z led it's a joke compared to note 2...help2

Well, short of manually upgrading the LED to a bigger one or buying a Note 2 there's nothing you can do. It's a hardware issue.
My night shots didn't look that bad with the Z when i was testing, in fact I was shocked. But that is just me as I wasnt comparing to anything as I usually dont. Apart from playing with exposure to get the lighting looking decent there isnt much to do about the flash.

I Really got frustrated by how they review cameras in web sites.
Although am not a photographer but atleast i know the basics and photography is my hobby.
First if all; What made me write (type!) This post because i noticed that many maanyyy dont know how to deal with this beast inside ?
So i have owned every well made camera phone till i settled with the one. I used the 808 pureview the N8 S3 and S4 also the Note2 so the pris and cons for each i passed through till am satisfied now with the One.
So first what is UltraPixel. Its a big sized pixel 2 micron which allow it to be able capturing more light than usual. Just for comparison the iphone5s pixel size is 1.5 micron (was adv. As super light sensitive)
Pixels and sensor size are directly proportional the bigger size of both the better light performance. So basically more megapixels (13) with the same sensor size mostly used (1/3") means smaller pixel size so lower light sensitivety and more noisy capture.
Most phone makers to get bright low light pics they raise the iso. Raising iso really gives more bright image but with more noise. So the right formula is to long expose the sensor to more light with bigger pixel size to get the perfect shot.
The draw back is the long exposure the slower shutter so the more blurred pics you have.
Htc added optical image stabilizer to compensate for hand shakes during longer exposure time to get blur free pics.
So Htc One is getting very near to the perfect formula a bigger pixel size (but same small sensor) with ois and some how longer exposures to get a better low light performance.
So why didnt they put a larger sensor with more pixel and join the megapixel race? The point is a big camera bump at the back as the 808pv or lumia1020 which ruins the beauty of the phone.
Htc one went for fewer pixel to allow a bigger size on the same thin and small sensor adequate for cellphone.
This very long introduction was mandatory just for everyone to know what to read when comparing cell phone camera spec.
F 2.0 means wider basically wider aperature to receive light so faster capture. So now we have a device with
Ultra big pixel f2.0 and ois
With my trials with the one to get the best pic i found that it works best with touch to focus
So just touch the area you want the phone to focus then tab the shutter button.
I found that the phone uses a matrix or centre focus metering mode by default. So you may find your self getting a very bright over exposed pic. Just touch to where you want and the metering mode will turn to Spot meter mode. Example is the lamp pic. First the phone used a centre weighted metering mode but to spot the lamp i touch to focus the lamp and its clear now.
The htc one flash is amazing. Its the only flash i used in phones that preserve the human skin tine perfectly not blue washed as samsungs or yellow washed as iphones. Try it and u will be amazed.
The flash is very strong really strong u may say double the S4 power! It never failed me. (But no near to xenon)
The Night mode in the htc one apply longer exposure time and lowers the iso to get a perfect clear bright night shot. The only draw back is u have to be steady even with the ois and be sure to touch focus on what you want and notice the focus. .. once it locked correctly press the shutter.
There is also l0ck af/exposure feature. Long press on area and the phone will lock the focus and exposure so you can talk dramatic nice shots!
The htc one captures videos @60 fps i dont know why all reviewers dont mention it while they mention it say for the note3 as a premium feature! The htc one captures 720p @60fps thats a very fluid hd video recording try it.
I like how they decided to go 720p instead of the 1080p for the @60fps cause the file size for the 1080p will be amazingly huge that u may find your self filling your 32gb version in alittle period if time.
The hd recording is just fine plenty of details and balanced video file size.
So the point is touch to focus then the shutter.
In video mode the focus is locked so to not let the phone hunts for focus every now and then. But if u want to let hunt for focus turn this feature off (not recommended in low light)
ironically the reviewers when comparing with other phones the point the device to focus during video comparison and sure its locked by default then they say mmm... Failed to focus bad camera ??
Other reviewers take a shot in dim conditions and say mmm.... The one didnt light up the scene as phone x.. . Thats because pointing the phone into bright direct point turns to spot metering it and dims the scene down ... ?? why you dont just touch focus and see the magic! I dont know!

You forgot to mention all the people with defective (or so we would hope) cameras. Some issues include: Purple tint in the picture, noise, inability of the camera to focus in dim settings, inability of the camera to focus at long distances, inability to focus on one side of the picture, inability to stabilize etc.
Moral of the story: if you are extremely lucky, you can get your hands on a perfect One and you'll have a great camera. For the rest of us, nothing has changed.
And does it record at 60 fps by default? I thought you had to select Fast HD from the settings for that.

the camera sure will not focus in pitch black cause due to the lack of auto-focus assist light
and yes in very dim conditions it takes many trials about 5 times to get the perfect focus point.
up in the boat pics my previous S4 failed to focus. it focused only after many trials on the moon.
Sometimes it focus automatic but you will have to re-focus again by touch focus. thats too in all cameras. All this issues in dim conditions not in bright light.
the purple tint i saw some sadly affected with it and heard that in the rolling out update 4.3 will be fixed. And yes my screen turns Red when i cover the lens with my hand.
No the 60fps isn't default but its very nice to have it specially in sporty occasions that needs fast buttery smooth HandyCam video recording

IMO HTC One has a great macro shot capability. It also has an amazing HDR capturing ability. Using it during low light conditions also sometimes gives amazing shots. Everything else for me is decent.

Browski, I'm not exactly sure if you're trying to insult me, but it's not going to work. I realize that no camera will focus when there is no light. I'm saying that my camera, once in a while, simply refuses to focus, even though the lighting is somewhat decent. I'm not saying that you are lying or wrong. I'm just saying that it's apparent that not all One's created equal and therefore not everyone will be able to get the same experience as you did.
People in the Taiwan forums and those with dev editions have confirmed that the 4.3 update doesn't fix the camera tint problem. Go figure.

Hey! Why should i insult you or even be rude! We r just discussing a simple point dont get the point wrong here.
Am sad you got a defective unit i think u should return it if the tint bother you alot.
Other people here in xda confirmed the purple issue gone after the 4.3 update ... I will get u the link.
Wish you best of luck. And i didnt made the thread to say that the purple tint is user fault am just trying to help other users with a simple info or trick for better photography.

The issue with the purple tint is the camera software telling the camera to crank up the ISO and exposure automatically.
It's possible to keep the photo ISO down and there's no purple tint. But when recording video there are no manual settings options other than changing the resolution. Cinedroid sort of allows you to manually override the exposure level but the ISO is still maxed out so the image is underexposed but the purple tint remains and the image doesn't look anywhere near the way it should look as if it was a photo.
So a software update should be able to fix it.

Start video recording , hold on the spot you want to picture so you lock the focus then turn off recording and snap the photo ( remember don't touch anything after stopping the recording ) keep in mind this can mess things up sometimes and make super bright photos.
Here's one tip for far flash photos :
Increase exposure , if you use max exposure you better be 10/15 meters from the target , flash is very powerful with increased exposure , especially if using max , it performs like it has xenon.
If using max exposure + max contrast you better be 20+ meters away it's even more powerful.

Here is a simple comparison from my x-phone the Nokia 808 pv vs htc one at the same places. old pic found on my flickr account when i had the 808 ... photobucket links for larger resolution. i dont believe in the cropping thing and comparing minute pixels. i believe in the overall picture apperance as i view them on my monitor !

me too is wondering what prevented them from adding the led focus assisst in low light. it already fire before focusing !
To switch to Night mode video capture. Just choose Night Mode then tab the video capture

I was wondering, for everyone who currently owns one, is the LED flash on the back quite dim when being used as a flashlight? I had a Z1 for a while and the flashlight usage was really really low. Other flagship smartphones have huge dual flashes on the back which are really good for a powerful flashlight in the dark.
Just wondering if they've improved that aspect at all. Thanks! :good:

I can confirm that LED flash is not too strong comparing to other phones and my last iPhone 5. Maybe due to glass on the back. But I think for camera is fine.
It's not dim but it's not that bright compared to my moto g for example
plenty strong enough for me to see it, but yeah its not as strong as some. i actually like it that way, i can notice it but it doesnt light up the whole room at night...
on the z1c it was a larger led but it didnt look all that much more bright too me (it was a little more noticeable)
It's rather dim - especially if you compare it to the SGS III (my previous) and Galaxy Note III.
I often use LED in the phone as a flaslight and consider it an important feature.

Hey all, received my Note 4 today and the camera quality isnt great, the pictures look blurry even when keeping the camera perfect still. I have taken the plastic film of the lens. Just wondering if anyone else is having this problem

They were all taken indoors, some with light from room light and sun light through window and others just with a room light (on ceiling). Obviously one with a flash (flash was on auto for all of them but was only used on one after changing iso and white balance). They all just seem a bit grainy and blurry... or is it just me, ill try get some outside tomorrow
Indoor shots will look worse because the ISO will be higher and there's more chance of blurriness with a slow shutter.
Also make sure that you take a photo soon after a focus lock. When I'm indoors,I tend to use touch to shoot and touch on the part of the image I want the camera to focus on.

indoor the camera sucks. the only mini fix i have found is to take iso off auto and put it on 100 for indoor shots.

Also i read somewhere to put the metering mode on matrix, its comes on centre weighted so should i leave it on that?
The Note 4 camera isn't very good. For perfectly still shots it's not so bad but any movement at all and the pictures turn into a blur fest. There is something wrong with the software on the phone, there is lag in places there should not be. The note 3 out performs the 4 by a large margin. I think this lag is the reason the camera cannot handle movement. I have tested several Note 4's. Some from TMO and some from Verizon (mine is Verizon) and it affects all the ones I tested except for the demo model I tried at Target. For some reason that one blurred much less and was much quicker when snapping pictures.
I use my camera a lot, this will probably be a deal breaker for me. I was hoping to see a good rom that would fix the lag issues and hopefully the camera problems with it.

Theres also a hair inside the camera, underneath the glass but luckily its not over the lens,theres a hair inside the heart rate sensor bit as well. So dont know if that will affect anything

That right there would be the ultimate deal breaker for me. Any hair, human or otherwise, in my phone is an automatic return or warranty repair. I can handle some non-uniformity of the screen and stuff like that, but hair? Ick.
I've noticed that the indoor camera sucks pretty bad. Everything's a bit yellowish. Images can be adjusted a bit with the included software, but still not great. Outdoor photos are not so bad. But considering how hyped the camera was on this phone, it's a major letdown.
I think the camera is great considering it's a phone and not a digital camera (people seem to forget that sometimes) Almost all Android camera's perform bad in low light because of shuttertime limitations in de Android camera API (it simply does not provide long opening times) . Not much any Android smartphone manufacturer can do about that. Also if you're using flash indoors it's a LED not Xenon flash. Even the cheapest digital camera is using a real flash and outperforms a LED flash device.

All true. They just need to stop hyping these cameras as digital camera replacements and all that. It sets unrealistic expectations.

I think the camera is great considering it's a phone and not a digital camera (people seem to forget that sometimes) Almost all Android camera's perform bad in low light because of shuttertime limitations in de Android camera API (it simply does not provide long opening times) . Not much any Android smartphone manufacturer can do about that. Also if you're using flash indoors it's a LED not Xenon flash. Even the cheapest digital camera is using a real flash and outperforms a LED flash device.

This camera is worse than what it should be. I hate to see apologists come in and make light of something that is obviously very wrong with the note 4.

And your information is based on what? It's no apologize that Android camera API is limited, it's a fact. What you don't understand about that? In other words you can put a professional CCD chip in a Android phone and it can only profit to certain amount of it because of OS limitations to access the hardware. Lucky the Google developers have seen the light and in Android L there will be improvement.

I have very realistic expectations of what the camera should/can do and it doesn't do it. Also the in general lag is not right for the processor this thing has.
Like I said the note 3 has it over the 4 performance wise.
I'm hoping it's just simple software fix and things will be in an acceptable state.

That's your expectation, I can't argue with that. I do know for sure there is no Android Smartphone on the market, which camera performs better then a cheap 60 bucks digital camera . Which is logical because of OS limitations I mentioned.

The lag (if there is any) is mainly caused by TW AFAIK . I can tell you from first hand that the Note 3 does not perform better then the Note 4 as they are laying both in front of me now in my desk. Also you have take in account, that the Note 3 is longer on the market and most bugs (if any) are tackled with software updates, while the Note 4 is just 4 weeks on sale.

You're disappointed in your new phone because of your own expectations, if you can't live with it ,trade it in against? Honestly I wouldn't know which phone to choose then myself.
Thanks for this thread. Its convinced me to stick with my note 3 after all. I've been waiting for an honest discussion on medium/low light shots indoors with the note 4.
Funny how no review sites pick up on this issue. Hopefully lollipop will make my note 3 take better shots anyway.
To me there is no good reason now to get a Note 4, especially with lag reports.
A n6 is maybe still a consideration having dual speakers, which is now the only significant upgrade to me. That or pass on upgrading this year.
IMO the lag on the note 4 is no worse than that on any other android phone I've had (I'm on the third plus three different tablet models) and I don't think it's all that bad.
Drop by your local store and give it a try for yourself though from what I've read, there's no compelling reason to upgrade from a note 3.

Some reports did compare..... and note 4 outperforms note 3 buy a huge margin.
1. Not all cameras have ois, not even the note 3. Note 4 has it and that allows for relatively long shutter speeds like 1/8s (I've seen note 4 do 1/4 once but that's rare). That's a huge upgrade from note 3.
2 . The note 4 uses sony's IMX 240 sensor which is 1/2.6 inch size. The note 3? And older generation sensor is of a smaller 1/3.06 size. Now. Note 3 is 13MP and note 4 is 16MP. So individual pixel size of both cameras is of the same 1.12 um size. However it's a known quantity that IMX 240 's has better iso performance than I'm 135. Thus note 4 should have better low light shots.
3.its been known that the note 3 takes bad low light shots due lack of ois and the old IMX135 sensor.
4. Almost all galaxy series engage in some kind of "image stacking" software to reduce noise in low light shots. Aka night mode. This is probably low light shots EXIF data is eroded .
As for the lag. What lag ? Jerkiness in viewfinder? Lag in auto focus?

If your note 3 does better low light shots than note 4. Your phone is probably faulty or you picked the wrong settings for the camera.
It's funny how so many people here expect unrealistic results from this camera. Is this camera better than a PnS camera? Nope.
This this camera worse? Not really.
If you're talking about junk market for PNS cameras. They use a 1/2.3 inch sensor which is not all much bigger than note 4.
A lot of them don't have OIS or Sony's newer image sensors ( Sony's sensors are widely used in many brands).Note 4's image quality is probably better
If you're talking about the mid segment. They use approx a 1/1.7 inch sensor which can probably do a little better low light shots. But they are not really cheap anymore. Eg canon s120. Olympus xz2 etc...
Note 4 loses out a bit here. But that's cause these cameras are meant to be an upgrade from smartphone cameras
If you're talking about about the premium segment. Eg canon gx7 gx1 Sony rx100. Most of them have 1 inch sensors which boast relative great low light performance.
(They still suck compared to mirrorless or dslrs though). However they are probably as expensive as your note 4 or even more.
