New year - new rant - Google Pixel Guides, News, & Discussion

There is nothing ''premium'' about this phone, and the price is unjustifiable.
Google has basically out right copied Apple/Iphone, in relation to Apple's business model (relating to the iphone 6/6s/7). Talk about a major cop out.
There is absolutely no innovation in the new pixel phones. None at all. It even has a sub par basic dac, and a tinny sounding bottom speaker. Even the design is basic and retro, and the marketing is just like apple's. All this spewing of this device being ''premium'' from almost all reviewers on youtube (which, for some reason, all are stating the same caption being ''the best android phone around'' makes me wonder whether google are imposing the same tactics that apple uses by inadvertently paying for good reviews).
So what, you make a basic handset, but charge hundreds for it, and now automatically it falls into the region of being premium?
Is this some sort of joke? Google is really going to charge consumers over £700 when it isn't even worth that much.
If they really wanted to compete with apple, then at least place high quality components into the device, as apple do.
So from now on people, unfortunately what we will have for the next few years, is googles new business model, which will be near on identical to apple's. So next years new pixel phones probably may omit a headphone jack, a slightly more vibrant screen and a different letter or two placed next the the pixel name to differentiate it from the previous models, but no real substantial innovation or forward thinking. Great.
It sucks. I use to experience excitement these last few years, as each year, regarding the nexus line, excitement and talk would build on who was going to build the next nexus, etc etc, and now that has all gone down the pan.
I wont be buying it. That is for sure.
I can even imagine them being unrootable..

*Yawn*

Don't buy it.

So there's nothing "premium" about this device? Not the build quality, processor, experience, or any other combination? Lay off the wine this early in the day.

 Ok, pal. Talk about a worthless thread.

I guess I'm to blame. Shouldn't of had such high expectations.
I look at samsung (edge series), motorola (modular z series), LG (modular series), One plus (high specs low cost), htc (Audio) I see innovation, and all I see with these new pixel phones is basically a carbon copy of Iphone. Even the business/marketing model. Its practically identical.

So long and thanks for the fish...

It's a £700 plus phone. It's not water resistant, and has no dual stereo speakers.
Reviewers have noted that the DAC is awful. The headphone output alone is rate at 0.45 volts. How can this be a premium phone? or even be classed as one, especially at that price point?
The only thing that is really going for it is the software optimisation, which will obviously be neigh on perfect... just as it had been on the cheaper nexus 5, nexus 6, and nexus 6p (all of which were priced under £500 upon release) :/

Got mine today it's going straight back tomorrow. First off all I'm done with white phones for good, they look cheap no matter which brand iPhone, Samsung, Google. Secondly there's a huge gap at the top of the screen close to the headphone jack which really makes me question the overall build quality. Lastly the back when people said it was gonna be ugly I said OK let's wait see what it looks like for real but man it's hideous. It doesn't look white at all but more like some sort of pearlish coating. No way I'm paying 900€ for this.

This was my complaint as well. They are competing with Samsung and Apple, but what do they have to offer over those two? Samsung and Apple have water resistance, Samsung also has smaller bezels, a MicroSD card slot, and Samsung Pay, while Apple also has a dual camera system. Those are features that make it worth the price. The Pixel is a generic looking device that isn't bloated, but then again that's not a benefit over Apple which also isn't bloated and offers OS updates for twice as long as Google.

It is hilarious. But, I do agree that they eventually need to support phones as long as Apple does. I think this will come eventually as they build their supply chain, which is probably contingent on the success of this phone, and begin to source components for manufacturing. I also see Google eventually being able to undercut the competitors slightly in pricing, or outdoing them with features and hardware. After all, they do produce the base that all Android OEMs use.

Ok, 24h later it's not that bad, but still not sure if I'm keeping it. The design does take some getting used to to say the least. I do very much love their wallpaper collection granted not a device feature at all but very nice all the same.

The back is indeed extremely ugly. But i've never NOT had a case on my smart phones, so it doesn't bother me since it's going to be covered up anyway. I always get bumper cases that have port covers to protect against the numerous amount of pocket lint that collects in my work pants, lol.
Just saw a YouTube video that suggests this phone may be more water resistant then Google is letting on. Survived submerged in water for an hour with the only problem being the speaker got messed up. But remember, this is only one test on one device. Still, very impressive.

Its a free enterprise and we have choices to spend our hard earned money on.
I for one will not be fooled by this Google hype. Mark my words by years end prices
will come down big time. Maybe just maybe I will consider. These phones are not worth
what they are asking. When they drop 200 on each model then I consider.
Looks like the Pixel battery life is not that great so the XL would be the only option.
If you are on ATT you get no HD calling and no WIFI calling.
I don't have to be redundant but we all know the missing features vs the iPhone 7 or Galaxy S7.
To those 2 the Pixel line cant hold a candle.
Problem is, the people who have taken the plunge will try to justify their purchase with any
rhetoric they can come up with. You will find out that you will not be able to resell next year for anything
near the iphone resale, to make matters worse, when the discounts come it will be even worse.

Moderator Warning,
Thread has been cleaned. Flaming users on this site is not acceptable.

The phone is definitely premium. Latest specs, amazing photos and videos, good screen, Unlocked bootloader. If lg or anyone else made this phone it would be the same price. Google didn't make it a phone killer for a reason. They don't want LG, Samsung and the rest of them to feel threatened. They need them to still make money. But if you forgotten the new iphone design is stolen from HTC.

The bolded sentence says it all really doesn't it..
I created a thread about my purchasing/returning the nexus 5x, and i raised my concerns as to why, highlighting my dislikes, and you've gouded me ever since, because it happens to be the phone you use and are still using, one year on.
Need I say more.

Yes, please. How do you like your new Pixel? Or did you get the Pixel XL? I'd love to hear your hands on review.

I'm sort of tired of the design complaints...

... More so because all these big tech blog sites always opine on something as personally preferential as the build quality and design and almost pass it off as a "fact" and then you see other sheeps complaining about the same issues most of the time, based off what they read; simply because most people aren't capable of thinking for themself, and like typical consumers, they just get fed what others tell them.
I, for one, have liked the designs and the build qualities of the Galaxy S II and the Galaxy S III over that of the bland and dull looking iPhone and HTC One X. That's just my personal opinion, but what I don't understand is the constant complaints about the build quality.
iPhone has always been praised for its "premium feel" - but really, what are you getting in actuality? The Cheap glass+steel composition that is a shatter magnet? The plastic body on the Galaxy S series is not only in my opinion, superior, in terms of aesthetics, but it's also so much more durable and managable without any sort of expensive casing to protect these more sensitive "premium" builds.
I even see some of the cons of the Galaxy S lines by some people or tech sites being something as subjective in actuality, as design and build quality. It's just downright annoying and I think people should find more legitimate gripes.

Op you're wrong. It's not cause the tech sites have said that they don't like the design that everyone else doesn't, its cause they expected something newer, more original. I like the design of the S3 and already preordered mine, but I would be lying if I say that I didn't expect the design to be more slick like the HOX. Still I'm liking it more everyday but as the most anticipated android device EVER, people were expectating something more original and a phone's looks matters a lot. The HOX has so many issues, horrible battery life, screen flickering, sense crashing and reloading... And yet I still wanna buy that phone just because it is a thing of beauty. I saw it for the first time yesterday and I personally think it is the most beautiful phone ever made HANDS DOWN. If only the S3 had a better looking body, all the people saying that the S3 is a disappointment wouldnt complain as much. But again I like the s3 design more and more but as the flagship Samsung phone you can't knock people for expecting something better looking.
IMO, HOX looks way better, albeit a bit skate-board'ish (took a while to find the right word) but I aint buying phones for the looks (like my bro who regrets it with sensation).
Build quality and design are 2 different things btw, and HTC's build quality is derp.. they use fancy materials but there are nuff examples of bad-glued screens, light leaks, yellow spots or w/e with 1x and chipping with 1s and it's uber fancy hyped satellite NASA aluminum.
Yeah, well say that to my gs2 owning friend whose phone *creaked* after two weeks of usage.

I am not wrong, I'm merely stating my opinion and I made that clear numerous times. You're trying to overshadow my point as invalid to yours or a few others who mirror your sentiment based on some sort of construct that what you feel personally goes. That's sort of the indulgent mind frame we have nowadays.
I could go as far as to say that I'm right and you're wrong based on the same logical thought process you're using.

No phone is indestructible. But you put it up to comparison to the iPhone per se, I'm sure it would have incurred damage far greater and in less the time; it sounds as if your friend is a bit reckless with his gadgets. I've dropped my Galaxy S II various times without a case and at worst, I got a few negligible nicks on the side of the phone, but the screen has never gotten any gashes or cracks.

You're too angry, take a chill pill. This is what you said ...

what makes you think that everyone else is sheep and it isn't their opinion? Just because most people have the same feeling means their sheeps? And you think you're right about it? If you go to the Galaxy s2 I9100, many users are not satisfied with the new look of the S3 and you would think they should be satisfied since their coming from the Galaxy S2. It proves that theyre not just following what engadget or androidcentral or whatever tech site is saying, they really think it is a disappointment. I see where they coming from. But personally I'm liking it that's why I preordered it and already paid for it. You being mad and saying that everyone is a sheep and following what the tech sites are saying is just silly.
I actually agree somewhat with the OP in that tech blogs do sway peoples opinions even if it's a little. Along with the massive amounts of Hype unseen in any mobile device it's a surprise it's not shot down even more lol.
I personally think it's a freakin beautiful phone. Which is good cause thats all that matters to me.
I really hope this thing does not come with the S4 on T-Mo
The Verge is right. Samsung has the resources to make the most unique and exclusive design ever but the SIII is very generic looking. It's not ugly but it is generic. I would not mind carrying it around but they could have done a lot better.

I couldn't agree more, you're absolutely right. It is like Samsung made a " safe" bet on the design. They definitely could have done better.
I would love to know what this "unique" phone looks like. Most encompass the very typical form. What you consider generic, others consider to be justright. Some time too much deviating isn't always a good thing.
Again, it goes back to my point, if legitimate users want to have a bone to pick with the form, that's their own personal experiences, legitimized by the fancy of that particular user. We're all abstract with our preferences. To have some blog site slamming a particular device based on perception materialistic reason is still a bad way to present a phone to readers.

Just look at the thousands of concept renders for phones released each year by artists. With a little imagination and creativity, anything is possible.

If you see an HTC phone for the first time, even from a distance, you immediately know who made it because they all have some distinct design features. With this phone, I can't think of anything that makes it stand out from the crowd and screams Samsung. You have to check the brand on it to know. It lacks distinct design features which I my self and a lot of reviewers find disappointing. But you may not. Thats how it works.
For me it couldnt look any better basically It's like a big iphone 3gs, no rectangulars, no nasty edges. Its sexy and i'm pretty sure it will lie good in the hand.
And i think high quality plastic is a good choice. It doesnt block signals like most forms of metal, its lightweight, it can be easily colored, it doesnt brake as easily as other materials. Only negative people always bring up is "it feels cheap".
Of course it does matter how something feels to you, but i'd rather have a cheap feeling than signal problems because of full aluminum backs^^
I fully agree with the thread title, since I don't care much about the design although I like the looks of the S3.
The thing that really pisses me off is, that there isn't just one or two threads discussing the design. No, in allmost every thread be it about the display, the cpu, connectivity, sound,... if the people run ot of arguments why their beloved phone <insert name here> is so much better than the S3, they fall back to "but it's so ugly"

yeah, because the artists actually first off "know ****" about what is actually manufacturable (think of the teardrop shaped iPhone renders) and secondly do the artist never bother to think if that design is actually copyrighted or patented by another company.
as the androidpolice article stated: the design of the galaxy s3 may be only the way it is, because someone allowed apple to actually patent a touchscreen phone design which was already in place before apple first used it and would be a sensible choice to built on on.
to quote the infringement claims by apple:
a rectangular product shape with all four corners uniformly rounded
the front surface of the product dominated by a screen surface with black borders;
as to the iPhone and iPod touch products, substantial black borders above and below the screen having roughly equal width and narrower black borders on either side of the screen having roughly equal width

so you see that not using these attributes in a phone does very much restrict the available designs.
it is not samsungs fault that they wanna play fair now.
it is the fault of the patent institution that apple was able to patent such things in the first place.
others like HTC have more freedom in their design choice because apple does not feel threatened by them. You can bet that apple would have sued HTC to their last dollar, if HTC actually would be threat to apple, but since they are not apple just does not care for the moment.
i personaly like the design of the galaxy s3 and am just withholding because i wanna see some more thorouh reviews of it.

Apple advised Samsung to build ugly phones
On 6.12.2011 a german tech. news site posted the following article
http://www.chip.de/news/Apple-raet-Samsung-Baut-haessliche-Handys-Tablets_53208546.html
(use google translate...)
The headline reads "Apple advises Samsung to build ugly Phones"
It basicly says, that apple send Samsung a letter on how they should design their future phones to avoid being sued over.
When I first read it back then, I thought "WTF!!!".
So it isn't "the S3 was designed by lawyers", but rather "Apple designed the S3"
yeah, the funniest thing is following trademarked feature:
- display coloured icons on the display, when device is on
this is ridiculous!
I will say that the official launch didnt really do the S3 justice for its design. I poked through a gallery yesterday of it and it really is a damn good looking phone. I'm not too concerned with the "feel" of it as I usually throw a slim case on my phones anyway. People said the GS2 felt cheap compared to the HTC Vivid and I didn't feel that. I felt the GS2 was lighter but that doesn't directly relate to a cheap feeling for me. I will most likely be getting the GS3 as my next phone because I've had it with HTC/AT&T locking bootloaders. I feel the AT&T One X is destined for the same failures the Vivid saw for having the bootloaders locked for so long after its release.

When will HTC sort out build issues ?

A lot of people are complaining about the gaps and build quality of the one.
Any idea if HTC has acknowledged this and doing something about it as in a recall or releasing another batch ?
I am waiting to order mine but not with all these issues. I'd rather wait abit if they gonna sort it out.
I think if you go into the threads regarding build issues, you're going to read a lot of posts about them. Those threads make it seem like a problem, but that group of people is a minority. Also, some of these "build issues" people have are things that others wouldn't consider a problem. For example, some people would not even know their phone wasn't "perfect" had they not read those threads and begun actively searching for the tiniest of gap or misalignment. There won't be a recall because the majority of customers either don't have these problems, or don't look at their phone under a microscope to look for gaps. If people analyzed other phones as closely, they'd find imperfections as well.
True, some of the phones build quality is off, but you have very goods odds of not getting one.

what build quality? mine developer edition is perfectly built! love that aluminum body, love that boom sound, love that 468 ppi screen, love zoe
You could always have the store open it for you before you buy it. But overall it isn't as bad as it seems. People next XDA are just overly picky, they rather stare at a phone for flaws then actually just use their phones.
Sent from my HTC One using xda app-developers app
I got mine yesterday, while I am very picky about my phone's, I really don't want to return it.
First, I took it out of the box at home. I saw the legendary "gap" at the top especially, which could get worse in the future, let in dust or wven worse. Then I saw that both corners at the bottom of the phone aren't made well, since the aluminium plate that covers the botom speaker kind of goes over the polycarbonate sides. Put it in my pocket, those 2 sharp edges get stuck somewhere, I pull out my One and tada: I might pull of the aluminium plate of the bottom speaker.
Then again, I started using the phone for an hour and I fell in love (no joke). The thing that blew me away the moest were those speakers... OMG they are fantastic. I haven't been so impressed about a mobile phone in years. The screen was fantastic also (no dead pixels afaik). All in all I love it so much, I wish I could just keep it. But since everything is still pack nicely in the box (charger, earbuds, everything) I will just put the One back init's protective plastic (which is very easy btw, nice) and go back to the store.
Why not try to get a solid build? In the end, they promised zero gap.. Right? But really, I think it's a pretty "real" problem. Even my girlfriend (which also loves the device) said I should go back and doesn't understand why they released these device.. Since you're paying a lot for these products, you'd expect a better made product.
Note: most people wouldn't notice these problems. I'm sure 90%+ of the people I would have showed my One too, would not have seen it. So if you don't mind these kind of small things, don't be afraid!

Agree! If I did know the gap problem before, I cannot notice my One has a small gap.
This thread should be closed. It's pointless.
My HTC One was perfect.
Got mine at the weekend and have to say it looks like I have very minor gaps around the edge although not sure they're gaps could just be misaligned edges, but the phone is amazing and if it was a Samsung no one would care it was made like a kinder egg or mcdonalds happy meal toy.
HTC One is a beautiful device which is absolutely the best device on the market, and i've tried them all.
Helps that it's insured so I can always replace it if any faults occur, but I doubt they will.
Mine was perfect, can't find a single flaw... aesthetically at least.

I've looked at the One at three different retailers now, and they all had issues with the cases. The first was coming apart all over, the second had the top front aluminum speaker plate coming off on the top and bottom left side of the plate. The third was starting to separate at the top as well.
Three out of three -- cases coming apart.
This thread is not pointless. This thread is exposing an issue that the die-hard fans who just spent a lot of money don't want to be true.
HTC better be reading these forums and fixing their problems FAST!
Well lets see some photos of this build quality issue. That way others will know what to look for.
Every make or model will have a certain percentage of faults from the iPhone , to Samsung Galaxy and Nokia etc...
Late but still relevant somewhat
So I bought an Htc One M7 back in May 2014 and build quality was superb. I would like to think that HTC has fixed the issues of old M7 models. Two months ago after dropping my phone accidentally for the 5th time there is a gap on the top where the display meets the plastic. This is 100% due to the drop of the phone. Long story short HTC has listened and fixed the gap issue yay!
Never. HTC is the worst company ever created. The only phone htey created that was "ok" was the M9. The rest are a piece of ****. Go buy an iPhone 6s, way better.

You throw a banquet in a hotel and get a nice award afterwards. User experience is where it counts. The iPhone didnt get as many rewards, and oh wow, the usage time with 4g is now 9 hours, and standby with that is 35 h. Maybe it's not 235 hours like most HTC can do, but why the **** would I need to have the phone in standby for 235 hours. On the other hand, my M7 lasts for about, 4 hours usage time with WiFi. So yes, in my expirience, the iPhone is so much more faster, snappier and has more usage than my piece of **** M7. :good:

I'm not here to judge your experience or to debate if the Iphone is better than any other phone (Hence why I didn't quoted the Iphone part of your first post), its your choice to prefer one over the other and thats fine, I don't care. Iv replied to your post because of the "HTC never did anything good" part and wanted to share with you some good things they have made over the years, unfortunately, looks like this was only wasted time.

Why The Bad Press??

I own this Device along with many other Android Devices. The LgG G5 for me is one of the Best Android Phones Ive ever used, simply because LG had the Balls to try something different and Unique!!
I'm sick of reading that LG dropped the ball with this device????? Where?? The 2! cameras are fantastic, the process power of the phone is Hard to beat! The screen is crystal clear, the speaker sounds great!!
My hats off to LG for trying to be unique.. Isnt that what Android is all about?
It's a competition

I hope that it cools off - but it will continue for some time likely. I have always noticed that the true test of any new phone will be the test of time and that will become apparent only 6 months to a year from now. Right now people want to sell phones and it gets a little ridiculous how hard people want to put down or inflate a given product. It's unfortunate that many of the phone manufacturers are releasing their new product at roughly the same time - but we might all win with competitive pricing. The hyperbole though is intense and over the top. I like my new G5 a lot and the on-line criticism makes me second guess my choice - just like last time, curiously. I will try to ignore the internet hype while I somewhat privately enjoy my new toy in a mature and subdued manner.
It's not like a bad press, but more a "the S7 is better, why would you buy this g5 ****?"
Just look at some threads here in xda, are full of Samsung owners (I don't like the term "fanboy") which want to be said that S7 is better, even if it is not.
I'm italian, and in my country it's the same, all g5 news are full of useless comment like:" it's ugly, anyone who's buy this **** has to be blind! " or" lg has failed, don't buy a lg g5" and you know what? The device will arrive in Italy this Thursday! Lol
Also, look to the first italian review, it's a perfect phone, but with the reviewer stress the battery lasted only till 19, so guess what? 8!
That's all, reviews are quite positive, and the only negative side, apart from the faulty devices, is the battery which is not in par with others 2016 devices.
And still I've not understand this hated against a multinational lol
Just look at the comment below mines

Its not "balls" thats the mentality of a 6 year old. They took a risk and failed miserably at setting it up properly. What could have been a cool modular system became a half assed cash grab that was poorly thought out. Theres this mentality that fanboys and girls take on that the thing they love was created for the benefit of mankind somehow... They are a business and did it to make money... Look at the price of these modules! $70 for something that could have been done just fine with software controls with a $10 battery thrown in? $200 for the 360 cam? Who would buy that? The hifi plus isnt even coming to the US but in the UK its 149 eur which is about $169! Based on the reviews its about on par with $40-$50 Dacs, $169 makes it more expensive then dac/amps like the fiio e18 and e17 which are better by far...

How about quality control for starters... I know you want to stick your head in the sand and ignore all the criticism of your precious but there are ****loads of issues with quality. Go watch the youtube videos there is no shortage of issues. How about when they dropped the ball on the hifi plus? Why where all the launch issues not taken care of weeks ago? The hifi plus should have been ready for pre order right along with the phone itself. How about that ridiculous iphone like home setup? WTF where they thinking with that?
When you look at the phone and compare it to the generation its actually in (GS7, HTC 10 whatever moto comes out with) It falls flat on its ass without the modularity concept taking off.
Same processor and ram as the competition.
Camera seems to be on par with the competition not really better.
Inferior screen to the competition.
Smaller battery than the competition.
No qi charging like the competition.
No water resistance like the competition.
QC issues that dont exist with the competition.
LG sacrificed having a larger battery, QI charging and water resistance for the modularity and all we got for those sacrifices was a flipping camera addon that basically nobody wants or needs.
That is dropping the ball. Literally all they had to do was match the speccs of sammy and the rest with a nice aluminum body and it would have been killer. The modularity was half assed. For it to be a success it needed to have many modules that are genuinely useful. Instead it had 2 modules, one that half the world wont even get the other a cam module that literally does nothing that couldnt be done with software.

I love LG phones, But the quality of this thing blows. The seams dont line up & just go look at the thread on finding a tempered glass screen protector. The ****ing screen us soft & curves in multiple places at the top & at the bottom corners so there is no tgsp that works without the corners lifting.
It is horrible, No.. But honestly the fit & finish of the LG k7 (140 dollar POS) leaves this thing in the dust.

No... No it isnt.. LG did the screen with the intention of it being flat & uniform. But it is not. The screens are not even & unintentionally curve in places it is not supposed to (I am not talking about the top where the obvious curve is). There is no reason that the bottom corners should be seated lower then the bottom middle or the sides, bit it is in fact that way.
Dude seriously markdexter did you start the thread just so people will pat your head & tell you it'll all be ok?
LG dropped the ball & its being noticed across the interwebs by professional reviewers & regular enthusiasts alike. And I have NEVER seen a top end phone with this many physical flaws from any manufacturer. Hell for that matter I havent seen a budget phone with this many physical flaws. LG tried something new & they should be commended for that. But the execution is severly lacking in what you should expect for the money. Believe me I hear about flaws in pretty much every phone from every manufacturer (currently do customer support for one of the big 4 & used to do tech support for 2 of the other big 4) but this isnt the normal 1 or maybe even 2 common things that may be slightly off. This is a very large number of devices effected by 4 or 5 issues.

Why I'm returning my G5, after 5 days

In short, the G5 feels poor, for a flagship. I knew about some of these issues beforehand but I didn't think they would bother me as much. I've never returned a phone before.
I'm coming to it from a Samsung S6 Edge and iPhone 6. I can include the Nexus 5 and even the HTC One X in here too. They all felt a lot better, smoother and cleaner.
I wanted the G5 + Hi-Fi Plus to replace the phone + audio player combination I've gotten used to (most recently, Sony Walkman NWZ-ZX2).
I still haven't received my Hi-Fi Plus. But even if it was great (it is essential, for me), it wouldn't make up for everything else.
It feels like there is a lip when you swipe from the side of the screen. It's not smooth glass like an iPhone, S6/S7 Edge, or Nexus 5. It doesn't feel nice.
The chrome trim around the back has hideous gaps. The bottom of the phone doesn't align along perfectly along the sides. I think this is shocking in this day and age. I can imagine Steve Jobs slapping you in the face if you tried to release something like this at Apple.
The fingerprint scanner doesn't always work and seems to be worse than my iPhone and the S6 Edge.
The battery life is mediocre, even without always-on display. With lighter than average use I can go a day. I would expect this to be reduced with the Hi-Fi Plus. I don't want to carry two batteries and I don't want to be swapping batteries until this one becomes suboptimal. But by that time I will probably want a new device.
The supposedly metal body feels like plastic, so what's the point of it? It's not as though plastic phones fall apart or melt in time. Moreover, this prevents wireless charging.
Audio quality through the standard headphone socket is dull. The fact that something can play 24-bit audio doesn't mean it will sound great.
The tapered top of the phone means that I can't use a screen protector. In the long term, this is not a good idea, especially without a case.
The fact that the Hi-Fi Plus makes it a little bigger means that I can't use a case.
I think I'll get the HTC 10 when it's released, because the S7 Edge isn't a worthwhile upgrade over a 128GB S6 Edge.
I had similar build quality concerns. You can actually see some of these things in review photos and videos of you know what you are looking for. A friend of mine has already exchanged his first G5 due to build quality.
BTW, what does the M10 have over the S7E that makes it worth the upgrade and the S7E not? Just curious.
Wow, I've had a totally different experience. My build quality is perfect much to my surprise. The seams along the modular edge are spot on. The fingerprint scanner is spot on. Faster than my S7 and on par with the Nexus 6P.
The screen lies smooth to the side and I like the curved top and bottom as I really don't use screen protectors anymore. The gaps on the chrome are antenna lines, at least they are not all over the phone. As far the finish it's a coating. I like it as it has better grip than my S7 edge or any metal/glass phone and I have no blemishes thankfully.
I can't comment on the headphone audio as I use LG Tones and the sound has been great coming from Bluetooth.
As far as the M10 it will be no where near as good as the S7 or even this. Why? Because HTC has lost its identity and produces a mismosh of tech. Smaller screen, added a home button and remove its defining feature the front facing speakers. Blah. Ill skip it.
I'm sure Steve Jobs has already rolled over in his grave with the crap Apple has been pushing out for the last few years. Innovation stopped with his illness and unfortunate death. They have been far too stagnant. From antenna gate to bending phones to buggy os releases there are plenty of bad quality control issues at Apple, no company is exempt.

Well to be fair to the HTC 10 it presumably will have a better DAC in it than the stock SD820 DAC that the S7 and G5 has. But at the same time the SD DAC which has been notoriously awful over the years is much improved. Definitely good enough for most people or cheap gym headphones. I would also give a slight nod to Sense over touchwiz and LGs new abomination of an iphone setup.
I am Coming from the HTC m7 and htc models before the m7, after one week i am still fascinated from the design and the quality of the the G5. Battery is ok could be better but ok. i am not more then 24 h away from a power supply and can still use some powerbanks on tours. the Launcher i use for years now is Lightning Launcher so i never have to care bout sense or other original used launchers by the manufacturer of my phone. till now the phone is top for me.
let me see if the sound module can beat the boomsound of HTC and if it will get rooted for some framework and so on.
For me, the back seam is not straight in terms of height. The seams along the side don't align either.
I think in part I'm used to devices impressing me in the hand. The One X felt amazing. The Nexus 5 felt very clean. The S6 Edge looked fantastic (although the Edge was pointless).
These things wouldn't bother me so much if I kept the phone in a case, but this won't happen.
Even without sound quality considerations, I much prefer the S7/Edge/HTC 10. I can get a separate DAP (I'm considering Onkyo DP-X1 but waiting for it be released in Europe, for warranty reasons).
The one clear advantage of the HTC 10, for me, is that you can use the microSD for app storage. I found that I'd used up all the space on the G5 after saving a lot of Spotify music for offline access. It felt like a step backwards from a 128GB S6 Edge in this regard.
Mines perfect. I adore this device. Sorry to hear your device sucked.

Bye, and dont let the door hit you in the arse on your way out.
If you're that much of an audiophile.... I don't even know why you'd consider a phone to play audio. Just my 0.02.
Fingerprint scanner is spot on for me.. Even when I'm dirty at work, it still picks it up. My S6 Edge+ would pick it up 10% of the time when my hands were clean.
Sure, I went through 8 G5's before I settled. Is this one flawless? No. It's slightly off flush. Do I care? Not really... It's in a case.
Do I expect perfect QC for a $700 phone? Sure. But it's not going to happen until manufacturing returns to this country. Will that happen? Nope.
Overall, I'm loving this phone. Displays nice, clear, and smooth. UI is great... Probably moving back to nova, but the styling and icons are beautiful. The grip without a case is great for a metal phone. Due to the coating, for sure.
It just feels and looks nicer than the S6 and S7 IMO. Had the M10 not had a physical home button, I would've considered it. Nothing says classy like a buttonless face.

I know right, it really sucked when they stopped making smartphones here right? Whats that? They have never been made here? Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaat?
Really though, how can you even try that excuse? The G5 is made the same way the s7/iphone is made. Cheap asian labor but you dont see these issues plaguing them do you? This notion that made in china = garbage is so ignorant and shortsighted. It dont matter where its made the manufacturer can set the quality standards its like this in every country no matter what they are making.
Exactly. I don't want to carry two devices all the time. Especially in the summer.
The Hi-Fi Plus could make the G5 compete with DAPs that cost roughly the same.
The ZX2 was good but it was stuck on Android 4.2. The DP-X1 is still not forthcoming for me. So I need something. I sold the S6 Edge and my iPhone doesn't have enough memory for much music.
Yes, some of these issues are due to quality control. Others are just very bad design choices.
I'm still having problems with the fingerprint scanner. I tried rescanning carefully but it hasn't improved.
I'm also a little sceptical about the fast charging estimates. I think they're underestimated.

If quality of music is your biggest concern at the gym, you've got some other issues at hand. You should become more focused on your workout and sweating away that fat instead of worrying how good your music sounds.
Yeah, I went through 8 because the moment you pull them out of the box the flaws were that noticeable. Beyond that, no big deal.
Ignorant and short sighted? No. Compare tools made in China vs. Made in america, germany, or Spain. Big difference. Or more importantly - copper and steel pipe and fittings. Tell me there's no quality difference between something made with cheap labor vs. Something made here. The fact I can crack a 2" black iron fitting with an 18" pipe wrench is enough to see there is a difference. Than you factor in dimensions and threading differences.... Get out in the real world and realize there is a huge quality difference between cheap labor and expensive labor.
Oh, I'm sorry.... Did you forget about about the admitted iphone 5S manufacturing defects? Could be sworn there was something wrong with the 6's as well!

The pixel is not actually over priced!

at first I was very upset for the price of the pixel and although I got a great deal on this phone (580$).
I honestly think that this phone is worth 750$ for the right consumer.
this is why I think is not over priced. I owned a bunch of smartphones including all the latest flagships, s7edge.note7,one plus3, lg v20, nexus, 6p, iPhone 7, and many more. and one thing I noticed that everyone says the pixel doesn't offer much for its price. example it doesn't have a dual edge, or a 2nd screen at the top, is not water resistant, doesn't have ir blaster, or dual front facing speakers. people feel like they are paying for just a plain basic phone! which is correct! on mys s7edge I ended up hating the stupid edge screen accidental touches were becoming a norm. the edge panel is turned off by majority of users so other than esthetics imo is useless, lg v20 2nd display yes is convenient and pretty cool but the only major used I have is to use the torch, most of the times I still landlocked the phone to do task that I could of done from the 2bd display. plus is very inconvenient is placed all the way at the top and the lg v20 is not a small phone.
to summarize this the pixel is a plain android phone without any useless gimmicks that other manufactures are using. could they have added a few more features. yes perhaps water resistant and dual front facing speakers would have been nice. but just the fluid pure android experience on this phone defiantly makes it worth its premium price.
again this is personal my opinion and I would enjoy to see what you guys think after owning the pixel!
Every phone is missing something. From Samsung missing proper long term updates, iPhone missing some hardware features, to Pixel missing hardware features. It's up to the consumer to decide which checkboxes are more important. I think all the hate on the phone comes from people expecting the Pixel to check off every box a consumer would want at the same price point the competition is at, even though they are all missing something as well. Business doesn't work that way.

That's they only thing I would have really liked never really cared for bottom frieing speakers, waterproofing would have been cool ... And maybe a physical home button but I know that's not really a feature many care about .... None of which takes away from it being a nice phone ..... I think all phones are a bit over priced lol, price is subject anyway the only person who needs to worry about it is the one who's buying it and if it's too much they have the choice to get something cheaper

I personallt prefer on screen buttons rather than hardware. people say you get more screen real state but I I actually enjoy the on screen better. although my biggest let down was the two speakers which I feel like they should have put there. other than that the phone is just what I wanted. stock, and lighting fast!
I mostly agree, this phone performs like no other. It should be 64gb base storage however.

oh yes that's a big one!! DEFINETLY base should of been 64GB..
but Google is smart most people went 128GBB which is exactly what they hoped for.. I believe that's why they limited the base model to 32GB and try to make up with unlimited storage.
You forgot no sd card slot which pretty much the only other flagship phone that also does not have one is iphone. Also you forgot about no OIS which is one thing a lot of people were upset about.
My biggest things for me is no sd card slot, and a one single mono speaker, not just that its not dual front speakers, that it is just only one speaker. They could have made the audio a lot better if they copied the Htc 10 boomsound dual speakers which are not front facing but they sound a lot better than the pixel xl's single speaker.
I never would have paid full price for my 32 gig pixel xl, well actually I did but I got a $200 best buy gift card in the deal, and a free chromecast yes lol woo hoo a free old model chromecast when the new 4k version is out already lol.
I wanted a pixel, it's the best android smartphone period. I am using iPhone 7 Plus for about 3 weeks now, and I love it, It's worth the money, it offers tech, that no other competitors does yet, and even if they did, without google implementation it will suck. They should have started this year with a little bit lower price, considering the large unnecessary chin and all the other features they ignored. Next year with iPhone 8 google must really bring their A game.

For me the premium price pays for all the tiny attention to detail points on the phone. I love all the little optimisations that culminate into the bigger picture. Custom CPU tuning with Qualcomm, camera ISP tweaks, touchscreen latency, fantastic build quality, in house developments like the insane video stabilisation and HDR+ all add up. Stereo speakers would've been great, it's the only thing I miss from the 6P but the down firing speaker works loud and clear and a worthwhile trade off for such a sleek performer.
Dude, it's very much overpriced.
It's missing sooo many hardware features that other phones have.
IR blaster for acting as a TV remote.
MicroSD for additional storage.
Water resistance of a decent nature.
So many more things but I don't want to think about it because I'll just get upset at my phone again.

Removable battery
Fast Charging
Fast Wireless Charging
A phone so water and dustproof that even air can't permeate the body
Endless storage
A camera that rivals Hubble

bro if this are so important to you, you should honestly go get a LG v20.. why buy a phone that is aim for pure android experience. and although the pixel is not rated water resistant it holds up very well. as it was submerge in water for one hour and it was fully functional at the end. and I never used the ir blaster I rather buy a universal remote.. when a phone tries to do too much it always fails at something and mostly is a lot bigger than what you gain.
I wanted a ****ty ass LG phone I would have bought one.
I don't think anybody is missing ois, especially anybody who has used the phone...

I don't mind the price of $649/$749.
However, I do mind the big price hike in Canada... $899 for the 5" and $1049 for the 5.5"?
Come on
The 749 USD translates to 1003 cad right now so it's not that big of a price hike lol, the conversion just sucks right now lol

4x4 MIMO would have been nice for the money they're asking for.
