Fast charging with 2A charger - Huawei P9 Lite Questions & Answers

I am planning to buy this phone.
Can anybody confirm if faster charging is possible with a 2A non stock charger? How much time does it take to reach 100 percent?

Absolutely correct, the phone doesn't have FAST/QUICK charger technology...
However a higher ampere charger like 2A could still charge a phone faster, hence my query above
Are you sure it takes 90 minutes to fully charge with stock 1A charger as mathematically it's not possible
3000mAH/1000mA=3 hours
Or
3000mAH/1.5H=2000mA or 2A
Pehaps you are using a higher capacity charger? That would explain it...

The time of charging with 2A is the same using a original charger with 1A. The limit is inside at the circuit control of charge.

Yes, you have right.
We can put a 10 A capability charger at our device, but charge control circuit is doing his job and let device charging with 1 A max, even if is there 10 A disposable....
Maybe with some command in hidden menu or with some customized firmware is a way to override this limitation.
(At LG 4X HD is in hidden menu a command that enable fast charging).

Where exactly does one have to change what in the root directory?

I doubt we will be able to find any such software hack to allow fast charging.
There just isn't enough development going on for this phone for anyone to discover and share such information

Maybe fast charge working with another type of charger: Huawei 9V2A Quick Charge Travel Charger
Instead of 5V1A(5W) or 5V2A(10W) with 9V2A(18W) charger, the charge circuit control will sense 9V instead of 5V and maybe switch to fast charge...

2 Amp charger are only needed if you are using a 2 or 3 meter USB wire.

I dont think so.... the options you mentioned actually mean QC 2.0 technology which we know for sure isn't available in P9 lite
There are few mentions of phone supporting 5Vx2A online; one such link shared by me in earlier post...

The P9 Lite doesnt support any sort of fast charging. The ability of a phone to charge faster depends on it's hardware and the use of a fast charger. However, with a 2A charger, it slightly decreases charging time since the phone pulls approximately 1050mA. Be careful not to use a charger thats higher than 5V as it will fry your circuitry.

Where did you get this 1050mA spec, did u measure it yourself? This could be true as well, as fast charging is not observed by anyone until now except few online sources which state otherwise...
The part about damaging phone is inaccurate as QC 2.0 or 3.0 chargers are reverse compatible with old devices which support 5V only, the phone and charger never switch to 9V/12V/20V mode as the technology isn't there...

I did measure it myself with the aid of a friend. By the way, I was referring to a standard 9V/12V charger, not the QC charger.
According to my knowledge, the voltage is like a gateway to your phone, your phone pulls the current. Hence, if you use a standard charger with higher than 5V, you'll most definitely burn your circuitry. BUT....if you use a 5V charger with an abnormally high amperage, the phone will only pull the current it needs.

Great that you actually measured it, I am assuming using an external device...
That would confirm it without doubt that online reports are incorrect and phone can't charge above appx 1A

I believe that is true. Although, most fast chargers (like the samsung one) only supply 1.67A at a higher voltage, normally 9V. This combination increases the output wattage of the charger....Like i said on my earlier post, the voltage is the gateway to the phone while the phone pulls the amperage.

Fast charging..........

Earlier I was nokia N86 user. Charger of that phone is same like SGS2. I charged my SGS2 with that charger. And I got the feeling that it was faster than original SGS2 charger.

i have a nokia n97 mini charger which i use to charge my SGS2. It is indeed faster. But i guess it is because the nokia charger is capable of 1.2 A against only 0.7 A for the Samsung charger. Keep in mind that the voltage is the important number when matching chargers.
Both chargers are 5 V. Having higher A number means the charger is capable of giving out more power (power = V x A), power is energy rate (how much energy per second delivered). That is why Nokia's charger is faster, because it can give enery at a faster rate

Yes, Price been issuing an (I think 1amp) old htc charger. Not sure I notice a difference in charge speed, though its possible it still helps when running flash, oced etc by helping power the phone more so the battery isn't picking up the slack and can maintain charging without load. And no more amps can't hurt,a load will pull what it needs (more volts WOULD be am issue) Its like a 1200 watt pc power supply to run grandmas pentium computer wouldn't hurt it, just be under utilized. Make sense?

Are you surprised it charges faster? I'm socked that my SGSII charger only throws out 700mA.
What are they playing at giving "travel charger" in the box?
The charge speed is directly related to the current output of the charger in use, as long as the phone is designed to accept a current higher than the lowly 700mA the standard one outputs.
With a 1A charger you should get (in theory) ~43% faster charging, assuming the phone and battery can draw that much current to charge.
Let's hope the phone supports this:
In Battery Charging Specification,[38] new powering modes are added to the USB specification. A host or hub Charging Downstream Port can supply a maximum of 1.5 A when communicating at low-bandwidth or full-bandwidth, a maximum of 900 mA when communicating at high-bandwidth, and as much current as the connector will safely handle when no communication is taking place; USB 2.0 standard-A connectors are rated at 1.5 A by default. A Dedicated Charging Port can supply a maximum of 1.8 A of current at 5.25 V. A portable device can draw up to 1.8 A from a Dedicated Charging Port. Havent done any test but my old blackberry charger, charges the phone faster. Anything is faster than the stock charger.

Hmm im interested in this thread, somebody with an electrical background should chime in on if its totally safe or not to use a charger with more current output.

Me too i saw a quickly charge with n97 charger.
But, with the original one, you gain like 1/2 hours of autonomy.
Quick charger = less time to charge the buttery but less time on battery
Slow charger = more time to charge buttery but more time of autonomy
The best should be charging the phone in offline mode using the computer

I think it should be fine, i used another charger on my old HD2 for most of the time i had it (a year and a half) after i lost the original and never had any issues.
So can someone give a list of what chargers would charge the phone faster than the one that came with it.

The phone apparently limits the charging current to 650mA no matter the charger. Not sure I'd want to be the one testing increasing the cap though

About AC adapter and its amperage

Hi all,
Ok, so I finally managed to order a 16Gb Nexus 4 and hopefully it will be with me in 1 week or so.
And I was wondering one thing regarding the AC adapter: I believe (pls correct me if I am wrong) that the original AC adapter’s output voltage is DC 5V, 1.2A.
I will need an extra AC adapter to keep it at work and I was planning to use one of those:
- The Sony Xperia P AC adapter will output 5V, 1,5A
- The Samsung Galaxy S AC adapter will output 5V, 0,7A
It is clear that neither of those 2 chargers will match exactly the specifications of the original Nexus charger (same voltage, but different amperage).
So, here goes the questions:
1) Is there any problem if I use a charger that will output the same voltage but with different amperage?... if not, which one would you use and why?.
2) how the amperage affect to the charging process?.

You must use a 5V AC USB Adapter and better no LESS than 1A
for Fast Charge.
AC Adapter I Use:
iPad AC Adapter 5V 2.1A at Work
PlayBook AC Adapter 5V 1.8A at Home 1
Original Nexus 4 AC 5V 1.2A at Home 2.
Our Nexus 4 will Draw around 0.8A when Batt lever at 0% - 80%,
then around 0.5A at 80%-95%, Final State 95%-100% will draw 0.2A roughly.
When 100%, Nexus 4 will use the AC power & the Current "A" show on phone
will like 2mA (0.002A) when idling.
** 1A = 1000mA
As previous poster said, do not go under 1.2amp.
I run the OEM charger in my bed room, a USB charger to my computer, and a 2.1amp charger in the car.

Why do you say not to go under 1.2A? Charging from a laptop is at .5A. I've been using a 1A charger since day one. Haven't experienced any issues with it.
Charging at a lower amperage shouldn't hurt anything, just charge slower. All you have to do is make sure it's a 5V charger. Amperage shouldn't matter but a lower amp charger will charge slower. As for a higher amp charger, the phone will only draw the amount of power it needs to charge so using 2A charger won't hurt anything either.
Also 2mA is 0.002A not 0.02 A

Since the charger doesn't actually regulate the charging itself (the phone does this) it doesn't matter how many amps it can supply, could be 100 amps, no worries. As long as it is 5V, the phone will draw as many amps as it needs.
Since the supplied charger is 1.2A rated, it's fair to assume that the phone will never actually try to draw any more than that, so there will be no benefit in going higher.
Going for a lower current charger will likely extend the charge time.
I use a 2.1 amp daily without any issues.

Yes, the .7A charger will take a little longer to charge you phone.
On the other answer, I think NO but I'm not as familiar with LiPo batteries. I would venture to say that .7A vs 1.2A (max the phone will draw but I think someone above mentioned it's even less than that when the battery is very low) is not going to make a bit of difference in your battery life.
One thing I do know about LiPo's is you do not trickle charge them. So while plugged in it will charge at the rates mentioned above until full and then it QUITS charging all together. Once the phone discharges the battery to a certain level, it will charge it back up again. Probably at 98-99%.
There may be one other thing to consider when selecting a third party charger. In the Nexus 7, the device looks for pins 2 & 3 (data) of the USB plug to be shorted in order for it to draw full current. If this pins are open (or have a load across them as is the case with iPhone/iPad chargers), the Nexus 7 will assume it is plugged into a computer and limit its draw to 500MA.
Not certain the Nexus 4 behaves the same way but would assume so.

I want to make this case clear. According to my Charging log,
Here is some key point.
Nexus 4 Max Draw Rate at Fast Charge Mode is around 800-900mA,
even you use a Charger that rated at 1A (iPhone Tofu), 1.2A (Original),
1.8A (Playbook), 2.1A (iPad).
Fast Charge Mode must be with Charging Cable with 2&3 pin Shorted,
or the charger itself have the 2&3 pin already shorted.
Therefore, 1A is a Sweet spot for getting Charger & Charging Time for
Li-Po/Li-Ion/Ni-MH Batt charging.
If you use under 1A Charger, eg 700mA or 500mA, it will take much longer
to charge the batt but no harm as well. Just too slow only.
The stock charger that came with my phone sucks, I use one from my epic 4g touch (gs2)and it charges much better

Left a phone on a charger all night with a long (10ft) cable and it couldn't even charge the phone over night. I know a 10ft cable will slow things down but my gs2 plug has no problem charging my phone. Search around and you'll find a few fail stories about the stock LG charger.

Quick Charging OnePlus 2 possible with Nexus 6P charger?

Hey everyone, The OPT charger is around 10W (5A x 2V) while the Nexus 6P charger is 25W. Both devices have the same Snapdragon 810 chipset and they both use USB Type-C. Is it possible to get the Quick Charge functionality from the 6P (0 to 100% in around 90 minutes) to the OnePlus 2?

No, op2 doesn't have quickcharge built in. You might break your battery.
Energy don't work that way.
Think of your opt charge circuit as if it is a water hose, battery is a little container, charger is the big container.
It doesn't matter how big is the charger container the hose will take the same time to fill the small container.

Couldn't have said it better myself
Quick charge is a built in feature which is not included in op2. So it's not possible to charge it that way.
I believe the snapdragon 810 supports quick charge, however, the OP2 designers chose not to implement it, probably due to the increase in cost associated with upgraded current handling for some parts, but that's a guess on my part.
There's usually no problem with using a larger capacity charger with your phone because they're almost always self regulating. However, it will probably not accelerate charging unless the device supports it.
No it doesn't support it.
My OP2 charges in 1hr50mins to full.. I am satisfied with it.

The nexus devices don't quick charge, they however charge quickly (called fast charging) with the new type C connection via a 15w 5v/3a charger. It's a non proprietary open standard and not a Qualcomm certified type of deal. The question is legit, you could be able to get a quicker charge with the nexus charger.

Yes I know that they don't use Qualcomm Quick Charge but some fast charging that's possible because of USB Type C. So that's why I asked if the OnePlus 2 could also use the ''Fast Charging'' capability from the 6P

You can have a custom kernel that tells the controller to not "shutdown" with more than 1A but is your risk and probably won't speed up the charging process by much.

How is OPT circuit designed for 1A?? then why would they make a 2A charger, that makes no sense.
Fast charging on nexus devices is a capability of usb-c, not snapdragon quickcharge.
So I think we need to reevaluate this..
Somebody needs to test with a 3A nexus charger and run ampere.

I might be wrong in something.
I used ampere to "measure" the current always tops at 1090mA but with screen on, which also drains juice from charger.
Any way you need a custom kernel like boeffla to change the mA to charge I remember it tops at 2200mA
But a 3A charger like nexus will only supply what the device is demanding (2200 mA)
Fast charging on nexus it's a feature of charger and charger circuit, remember to have a puppies a ***** (female dog) needs to mate with a dog not a cat. You might force different species they could mate but won't breed.
You need any race of dog to have puppies.
The same you need any brand of 5V/3A charger for a nexus and you will have fast charge.
Opt don't have fast charge won't harm to try but don't buy the charger just to test borrow someone's

Opt supports 5v 2amp charging on screen off.
Quick charge (Qualcomm quick charge®) is achieved raising voltage and not amperage (up to 20 volts, in qc3) and should be both hardware-supported and software-enabled since is the phone that asks the charger for a specific power level (volts-amps couple).
The real question is: is qc hardware supported on opt, and, if yes, could it be software enabled in some way in a custom kernel or so?

You might blast your USB port if you are overcharging more than 2A.

thanks God someone replied, it's a shame that this does not contribute to the discussion in any way
I found an article that says that you need Qualcomm PMI8994 Power Management IC and SMB1351 (as well as snap 810 SoC) to get quick charge working... I can find the first in many teardown but I can't find the second, any idea? Maybe it has been replaced by another component or is it missing at all?

just 1hr 50 mins???.For me it is around 3 hrs to charge from 0 to 100%

Charging with laptop charger?

Can i charge my s8 with my laptop charger which also has a USB type C pin?
It is charging and it's faster. Phone gets slightly hot.
Should I do it? Or will it harm my battery?

The device will limit overcharging My fast charger gets pretty warm,Well my device does I never cared for fast charge
Always been taught slow trickle charges will prolong battery life in the long run....

I wouldn't see why not Your device has its own loads of safety Fail safes that would disable charging if something was afoul
Yo man. You are able to charge it using your laptop or whatever type C you have. I did sometimes using Macbook Pro type C charger. As others said. I believed the device fail safe is there.

What is the output voltage on the laptop charger? It should have it printed on the charger unit somewhere. This is very important.

I Apparently read incorrectly, I thought you meant charging off your laptop not the laptops charger itself.... Normally laptop chargers are 15 to 19 volts which is way to much but again I am pretty sure the devices fail safes would kick in and limit charging....
You could, it should still limit the charging rate to 15W.

Nope, it depends what the voltage is. Your statement is correct if the voltage is either 5V or 9.6V, as those are the voltages used by the phone.
But laptops are usually way more than that. And if OPs one is higher voltage, it's going to kill the battery and potentially cause cause it to swell up and expand.

What about other way around, I have been using a MacBook Pro charger on my S8, what if you use a Samsung quick charger with a laptop?

I have recently bought this smartphone and I have one question. When I use its own charger the default mode of charging is fast charging but I don't want always to use fast charging since it's not good for the battery life-time. Is there anyway I can do to disable fast charging?

I believe the only way is to use another charger, because this is all hardware related.

Hi. I have just bought this phone and it was all fine. I needed another charger for work so bought a 3Rd party one. It was fine the first few times, but now when I connect it the phone automatically shuts down and will not start again. According to the tech that checked it out, the battery was completely flat.
I suspect I can only use a OEM charger. Really inconvenient.
Nokia lie about fast charge between 0 % to 50 % in 30 minutes . I tested it many time 50 minutes to charge 50 %

Not true. I have never used the OEM charger. Fast charging is tough on the battery as others have said. I have several other chargers (one came with my audio chromecast, one came with an old HTC phone, one is a no-name charger). They are rated anywhere from 1 amp to 1.9 amps. All have worked perfectly. At work I leave my phone on my desk so leaving it plugged in until charged regardless of how long it takes is no big deal. I also make sure to take it off charge once it reaches 100%. It is not good to leave it on charge when full.
More than 2 amps at 5vdc are overkill for the battery and it's causing nothing but a superfast degradation but hey we have superfast charge on a cheapster ...

I'm using an old Aukey QC2.0 charger that I bought 3 years ago for my Zenfone2, it charges quick too. Using a meter I checked that the Nokia charger is using QC3.0 and for instance can charge at 6V/2A or about whatever voltage it wants, but my QC2.0 charger is 5/9/12V only and with a meter I checked it is charging at 9V and ~1.6A. My car charger is also a QC2.0 charger and works too, on the lock screen is it written "fast charging" and yes, it does.
The chargers I use daily for 3 years now (I have the old 2.0 version but now they are 3.0 version)

QC2.0 is something like 5V/2A, 9V/2A and 12V/1.5A, while QC3.0 voltage range is wider, something like 5V to 20V, requested by the device, it can be 6V/3A for instance. Battery management is better I guess.
