Better than Moto X Pure - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Hey guys, I'm a Verizon customer and my 2 requirements in a phone are unlockable bootloader and sd card support. Since my options are scarce (CDMA compatibility) I've been using a 64GB Moto X Pure since they launched last year. I recently stumbled across the Moto G4 Plus and noticed that it fits my criteria for a smart phone.
Does anyone who owns a G4 Plus also own a MXP? They seem to be about the same size. The MXP has a better camera and screen resolution while the G4+ has a octa core processor. I'd much appreciate anyone's feedback who owns both phones. How do they compare in normal/heavy use, not just on paper?
Source - http://www.phonearena.com/phones/co...la-Moto-X-Pure-Edition-2015/phones/10053,9694

The Moto X Pure is much better in almost every way.

G4 Plus has a better camera, especially in low light situations. Fingerprint reader is super fast and I use it every day.
And the model with 64GB storage /4GB RAM is fast enough for every need. Who cares what a benchmark say? Nobody uses a benchmark daily...
Screen resolution? 520 ppi vs 401 ppi? Who cares, in order to see that you need to burry your face into the display or, if you are over 40yrs, you need two pairs of glasses to see that density!
PS: That comparison link is wrong, because that's not the US version of G4 Plus, it has the wrong LTE bands!

I ordered one off eBay that someone had lost the IMEI from flashing the wrong rom. Obviously I didn't pay full price. I'm hoping I can flash a stock rom and fix it.
If anyone has a link to the best restore file it would be appreciated. I tried to download from File Factory last night but after an hour or so the download failed. It's a US Moto G4 Plus 64GB.
Or if anyone else has tips about restoring the IMEI that would be great.

Look at the link below, it should be there. It's a link from Root Junky's site and should be good.

Def not a great camera. It is decent and great for the price but not great. It is mediocre at best. The videos are mediocre too.

Thanks I actually found that link last night and downloaded ATHENE_AMZ_MPJ24.139-64_65_cid50_amz.tgz. I have no idea what system version this phone will have installed when I receive it or what the current version is but this one had the newest upload date so I hope it's the newest one.

Try the one without amz, that is for the Amazon devices.

I also downloaded this one -

Hopefully one of these will work.

The last one is the one that it works right now in my XT1644.

Nevermind. The @$$hole had been on XDA every day since he sold me the phone and supposedly shipped it to me. I checked the tracking # yesterday and USPS had never received it. I sent him a message about it. He first replied that he was shipping it tomorrow (today), then immediately replied that his son dropped and busted.
Why sell something on eBay if you're not sure that you want to sell it yet?

Btw you should get better battery life on the g4 because of Smaller resolution and same battery. If I recall the mxp also has 3k mah. The CPU should also use less energy, not sure on that.
Overall, you're downgrading, especially camera. I like the g4 plus even on 2gb memory. It's smooth and decent battery life. Fingerprint is fast. You don't really have a choice imo. You may even opt for the regular g4 imo. Not much difference outside camera.

Good information. Thanks.
I currently have the moto g4 play (Verizon version)
and I'm thinking about getting the Moto X Pure or the Moto G4 for the bigger display and hd calling. I have read that both phones have a problem with overheating. (The Qualcomm snapdragon 808 and 617 processors are known for overheating issues). I would lean toward the Moto G4 but it seems the overheating issue is a bigger problem with the G4 than the Moto X pure.
What are your thoughts on the overheating issues?

I have a G4 Plus and it heats, but it doesnt overheat. I tested playing 3 games at the same time and plugged the TurboCharger for 30m and it got very hot like 47° but look what i was doing.
Heats yes, of course but it doesn't overheat. I have a friend who has a LG G3, that phone really overheats. Reachs 60° only playing a game, and 43° in stock. Insane.

Oh okay. Thanks.
I really like the moto g4 play and feel I would like the moto g4(don't want the plus 'cause I don't need or use a fingerprint sensor and there's not that many upgrades that
justify me getting the plus over the regular g4).
My concern is that I play a lot of music videos on my phone and when I tested a Moto X Pure in store,
the phone got hot after watching a music video on YouTube for only about two or three minutes, so I was like okay don't think I want to mess with that.
I'm thinking it might be the same or worse with the moto g4.
I don't want a fire trap for a phone.
May try the moto g4 and if I do experience constant overheating I'll simply return it.

I personally think it's a mix between:
Better camera, fingerprint sensor (and a good one), & battery life with the g4 plus
vs
Better performance (both cpu and gpu, especially gpu and overall performance) & maybe the fact there is more community support since it's been out for a while, for the x pure.
Can't be asked about the heat problems that some users are having with either, I ran antutu benchmark on both g4 plus and x pure and none got hot to the point where you couldn't hold it or have it feel like it was burning you. US variants of course.

Still the best phone?

So...after 4 months with the Verizon version, I'm making what I call a "lateral"transfer to the LG G2. Specs are becoming moot. The G2 offers a lot, the battery being a big factor.
Did anyone else let go of there Moto X 2014?
Sent from my XT1096 using XDA Free mobile app
I'll never let go of the Moto X, best phone ever made. I always sell my old devices to pay for my new ones, but that's not gonna happen this time around. This bad boy is going in the museum when I upgrade.
A friend just got the G3 as there was some issue getting the Moto X (corporate account). It's a great phone, but I wasn't a big fan of their software overlays. Plus cell radio quality is a big factor for me and the Moto X has better radio/antenna system. Camera on LG is noticeably better, but still not good enough if it is low light and something I really care about. Nice that it has removable battery and SD card, but have really never needed either.
And I do like the Moto X add ons... if they'd only get 'Attentive Display' working on Lollipop!
I'm finding that the battery isn't holding up long term.I need more. It's great for what it does, but it's a legitimate step back. It's rather disappointing.

Attentive display seems to be working quite well in the newest lollipop build (5.0.1) that was just released for Telus in Canada.

Good to hear. Hopefully we'll get that in the US soon.
Its the best phone for who dont have an att branded device. I cant unlock it and dont have lollipop.. Next time i will pay more for a pure.
The moto x series is really a breakthrough, this phone is (the) smartphone, I spent an hour or two receiving and responding to messages and calls without touching it not to mention other genius features which are hardware dependent.
Cons: no sd card and no easily removable battery
Pro: everything else
A very nice phone
The battery life is really bad, and has gotten worst. Even with Lollipop, which made it better, I'm not happy. As much as I love the speed of the phone, the battery is killing me hard! The G2 will give me near similar speed with much better battery, not to mention greater storage. This may be on Swappa soon...
I went from a nexus 5 to a G3 to now the moto X² PE and won't give this up unless something crazy comes out or the X³ arrives.
I have not had any battery issues with this phone as I consistently get 4.5 hrs SOT with 12+ hours total. I will say that the camera on the G3 was much better, but the moto X isn't horrible. And the hands free/voice actions with this phone are second to none.
That's just my humble opinion though.
As someone on Verizon, this phone is BY FAR the best available. No bloatware other than AcDisplay and some nice Moto things that make the phone better. Coming from a GS3 and a Galaxy Nexus (switched after my GS3 cracked), this phone is a god when it comes to battery life. I consistently get three, if not four hours of SoT per day. This phone already has lollipop and had it before some Nexus devices got it, and some flagships still don't have it, let alone on Verizon. The only thing not so good is the camera, but it gets the job done fine as long as there's good lighting. If I had the choice (unlocked cell service), I would still choose the OnePlus One, but I didn't have a choice.

I'm on Verizon, and you must not have used a G3 or the Turbo at all. The LG skin is light (I come from Samsung) and the Turbo is the X beefed up.

The Turbo looks great on paper, but the actual device is only so-so. I spent a good deal of time with one and walked away unimpressed. The X has FAR better build quality, is as fast if not faster (no QHD screen to waste resources on) and was generally smoother. Sure the turbo has better battery life, but my X easily lasts through the day and then some so it's a non-issue. The G3 is ugly, the skin is still pretty bad, and it is underpowered for the screen it has. Aside from the N5, everything LG puts out is just meh. People need to stop looking at only specs, they don't matter nearly as much as they used to. That said, the X still provides the best user experience out of any phone on the market, and that is what's important.

My feelings exactly. I really, really didn't like how the Turbo was built and even though the G3 build in my opinion is sleek, it's nothing special compared to the X. I've never used either phone as a daily driver, so I may not be the best one to judge it, but the Moto X is blazing fast with "good enough" features that work for me as a user who just wants to get through the day being able to use features like Google Now, something I was never able to keep on with my previous phones. The experience of the X is perfect for an everyday user, like most people are, and in my opinion that's what matters most in a phone. Again, I may have bias as this is my only phone I have been using.

Well, from the beginning of time until now, numbers haven't lied. That's not up for debate. But with user experience..I have to install nova launcher on the X because stock is lacking. The G2 (which I'm going to) offers equal speed. A smaller os, better battery and excellent build all while being a year older. The X while being customizable is just not enough for a power user.

I never said numbers lie, but they aren't always representative of the actual experience that the phone provides. If numbers meant everything, than the iPhone would have the worst battery life and performance of any smartphone out there, but that couldn't be farther from the truth. The same applies to the X. While the Turbo has better numbers, the X has the better UX. I don't see how the X isn't enough for a power user, I'm the very definition of a power user and it is pretty much everything I can ask for in a smartphone, with storage being the sole exception. Who cares if you have to put Nova launcher on it? That has no bearing on the quality of the phone itself. At least it doesn't have a nasty UI like the G2 does, even Nova cant save it from LG's hideous software, not to mention the plastic fantastic build. But everybody is entitled to their own opinion. If you think the G2 will serve your needs better, than that's wonderful. For me, the X is where its at.
hello guys ! i wanna upgrade to new device
and i'm confused between nexus 5 and moto x(2014) ?
i personally like pure vanilla aosp and this both have almost same though moto has some modification i don't think it will impact badly on performance ( does it? )
i love N5's fast update smooth performance even with some hardware compromises
but on other has moto x have better SD801 , and GUP freq 578 (vs 450 on N5) { will gaming performance be better ? } which in theory make it batter performance so if any anyone here can tell it's really an upgrade or i won't feel anything better
finally i like amoled but read somewhere that amoled pannel on moto x is worst qauily that samsung can make (really ?!!) , othere thing about camera ppl says it's 13MP is not as good as 8MP of N5 !! ( is it right ? ) and moto don't have notification led & OIS ( while taking pictures only does it matter ? )
so need your view should i go for moto X of stick again with relibale N5 ? will moto x be really upgrade ?
and how's lollipop on moto X ? ( i really like lollipop so hoping bugfree )
it will be really helpful if you can answer red marked questions

old generation phone vs new one. I really have no doubt which one to buy between 2 candidates.
maybe take a look to lg products or htc but don't make a step into the past.

I have and use both of those phones regularly and while the N5 is still a beast of a phone, the Moto X is easily the better of the two. The software mods that Motorola has done don't affect performance at all, and actually go a long way to making the Moto X what it is. Moto Display and Moto Voice are game changers. Gaming performance is great on both devices but slightly better on the Moto X. I can't say anything about lollipop because I don't like it at all and am keeping all my devices on KitKat indefinitely. If you get the X, which you should, make sure you buy the Pure Edition or at least one that's not branded by a carrier who doesn't allow bootloader unlocking. You need that unlockable bootloader in order to be able to root the phone.

Shoul I exchange it?

With all I learned, I'm starting to wonder if I should return the phone and get another one. Right now, I'm looking at the LG G3 because it is in my price range and it has a decent camera. Will I get any performances issues with a G3?
Not if you get a D855 with 32GB and 3GB ram. I prefer moto android though. I was really keen on moving to the Play but having had a moto g with memory management issues I'm really disappointed to see that there are issues on the Play with 2GB ram. I need background tasks like music and pebble to keep running.
What issues? Came from an LG G3, much better battery life on the X Play. G3 stuck back on older Android, camera is ok but not great the X Play's is miles better though. Cyanogenmod 12.1 on the G3 was good though, very smooth but the 2k screen is a real battery hog!

I'm also coming from G3 and:
-- the camera on Moto X Play is from comparable to worse. Ran some tests yesterday and in very low light, the LG G3 takes a better picture most of the time.
-- the pefromance of Moto is also from comparable to worse. The UI stutters just like in LG G3. Moto doesn't have so many pixels and a heavy skin to render, but it still stutters.
-- the screen of The Moto is comparable.
-- finally, the battery life is much better on the Moto X Play, even though LG's software has no iddle drain, it is still worse.
Cyanogenmod was always a little bit bugy on the G3. From the camera performance to the issues with double tap to wake.
If you care about the stock Android, a better battery life, and a front facing speaker go with the Moto X Play,
if you don't then LG G3 is a better phone in all other respects.

Even the 3GB model of the G3 has memory management issues. It kills music while using chrome. And performance overall are not that good.
Don't forget the 3.10 kernel guys
So? I should stick with the Moto X Play unless I want to invest a substantial amount of money into a real flagship? I guess I'll wait until Motorola give us the source code of the kernel, then it will be easier to develop a custom kernel. What I do love from Motorola is the bare to the bone UI (almost pure AOSP) and the tweaks they added are really useful. By example, the phone detect when I'm driving my car and it can read for me the SMS I receive.
Never had any performance issues with my g3. Stock with Nova launcher. Just hate all LG's tweaks. What about the price reduced nexus 6?
If I had the option of returning my X Play, I would take it back and get the Nexus 5 2015 later this month. Looks like it will be a great phone and it will definitely have plenty of ROM/mod support.

Just about every other phone has a smaller battery than this one, yet most manage to do just fine. Honestly, the "massive" battery life on the X Play hasn't impressed me at all. For a battery that is 40% larger than my previous phones, I'm only getting about 20% more battery life out of it. 2700mAh is still better than many of my previous phones, so I don't see it being a problem with the new Nexus 5.
I stream my music and store my pictures in the cloud, so memory size isn't a concern for me either.
Just picked up a Moto X play and am contemplating returning it as well. Maybe it's just me, but this screen is very washed out.
Might look into motomaker 3rd gen G and still save some $$$

Which is a better smartphone OP2 or Moto X Style?

Hey friends I would like to know which smartphone is better compared to battery life, camera, updates and over all performance and why?,
If you plan on unlocking the bootloader, but want to keep the factory warranty get the OPT. If you don't care about the warranty or you don't plan on unlocking the bootloader, then get the Moto X Style. I personally have the OPT, but that was just because of my great experience with the OPO. I was rather disappointed though. If I could do it all over again, I would have gotten the Nexus 6P or the Moto X Style.
I've been having some random freezing on my OPT. Mainly when pulling down the notification drawer. Pretty annoying to me, especially when my OPO still runs like a dream! OxygenOS isn't mature enough to be a widely used daily driver yet IMO.

Okay.. Well lemme ask you something. If we unlock the bootloader in Moto X and then if we lock it back, don't you think we can get the warranty...? Something like we usually do in old days.

I wouldn't count on that solution. You might could consider getting something like a 3rd party accidental warranty. That should keep it covered even if you unlock the bootloader.

They're both very good. Pretty much interchangeable. After owning the op2 for about 5 months now I can't express enough how terribly I want a moto x. I've had quite a few problems with this phone, if you don't plan on rooting than the moto x is the easy winner

Had the Moto X Style before and like the OPT more.
I have OPT. I rooted it, installed a bunch of xposed modules and whatnot. Never had any significant problems with it. Performance (antutu score is way better than Moto X) and battery life are great (GSam reports 5:45 SOT). Also consider the fact that a 64GB Moto X costs at least $100 more than OPT. There only two factors where Moto X excels: quick charging and screen resolution.

Screen resolution is debatable, less battery, less performance and working on adreno 418... That's a choice, not a pro, personally i love that Oneplus 2 has a FullHD display and not a QHD, i could bought LG G4, Moto x pure, or whatever 500uds or less. I decided Oneplus 2 and im very happy with my decisión. Thanks god i didnt belive the overheating rumors, they are exagerated, my nexus 5 got hotter.

I choose the op2 because of this:
-Full HD screen : more battery and less GPU demanding
-SoC: 810 vs 808. That means ram lpddr4 vs lpddr3, adreno 418 (qHD) vs adreno 430 (FHD).
About heating, because of the rumors oneplus throttle the devices too fast, if you edited the thermal file with boeffla kernel you could have awesome performance, for more info about throttle pm me.
-Fingerprint scanner.
-XDA community, not too much for no but it will grow up. Oneplus is contacting devs from XDA, that must be a good thing.
-Capacitive buttons, so it does not take space from the screen
-Alert slider is useful, but lg g4 volume buttons are very nice too.
-4gb vs 3gb, its not a real life difference but maybe it will be.
EDIT:- Better battery life. 3300mah vs 3000mah, also fhd vs qhd must make a difference.
About nfc, for almost 2 years i never use it on my nexus 5, so its not a problem for me.
Hope you can decide for the best, come with us :fingers-crossed:

I heard a lot about it
Me too, I've been wavering between OP2 and X Style for 1 month, view all youtube videos about those phones, borrow my friends'
Then OP2 was my final decision, and I don't regret about it
There's no better phones over others, just this phone is suitable for you than the others
In details:
OP2 vs X Style
Screen: FullHD 5.5" is enough
RAM: 4GB vs 3GB
CPU: 810 v2.1 vs 808
Storage: 64GB is enough for me, but X Style has an expandable slot
VGA: Adreno 430 vs Adreno 418
Sensors: Fingerprint scanner, doubletap2wake, Gyroscope.. I don't need Moto Voice or Moto Ambient Display
Battery: 3300 mAh vs 3000 mAh
This is just my humble opinions about OP2's strength, of course there're lots of pros of X Style that maybe suitable for you, for example NFC, quick charging, slightly better camera, durable brand name Motorola,...
I'm a fanboy of Motorola, but sorry Moto, my decision this time is OP2 =)
And the decision was...?

Best phone for the money?

I am in the US so everything I say is in US dollars, US versions, etc.
I purchased the Motorola X Pure as soon as it came out and was happy with it but lately it has had a lot of issues particularly with GPS. It works fine 90% of the time but that 10% of the time it says "Searching for GPS" while navigating and have caused me lots of problems with missing turns, etc while traveling out of town. Also it is very laggy switching between apps and even just surfing the web. I don't really play games...my average day of use consists of using Chrome to surf the web, using Google Maps for navigation (I use it even when I know where I am going because it notifies of traffic and accidents and advises the best route considering those), and watch videos on YouTube, Netflix, or Hulu. I also take a lot of pictures but not every day but a lot...anybody out there with kids knows you take way more pictures than you need, lol.
Since it was a mid-level phone at release and is a couple years old now I have been looking to replace it. My first thought was the Moto G5 Plus since I have Amazon Prime and can get the higher end model for only $240.
Is there a better phone available (based on my needs mentioned above) under $300? What about under $400? I can MAYBE stretch my budget to $400 but no more and that has to include tax, etc.
Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I picked up this phone today and only gripe so far coming from the S7 Edge is camera is pretty bad... Not sure if it's enough to push me back to S7 but I'm definitely considering it. Besides the camera I'm not sure what else you'd possibly want at this price point.

Moto z play are about $300 on Swappa. Much better battery life, mod compatible, more premium feeling, bigger AMOLED screen, quite a few ROMs, etc. I love my Z Play!
Rather have the Moto g5 over play. The mods are imho worthless. With mods you might as well spend the money on a s8 or s7
Looks like the ASUS Zenfone 3 is about the same price as the Moto G5 Plus, how do those compare?

My guess is that the AMOLED and bigger battery of Z Play makes the SOT somewhat better. Just because the mods are worthless doesn't mean the device is worse, or that you are committed to buy some mod. Probably one should decide if you prefer 5.2 or 5.5 inch display, and find out if you need dual SIM or longer lasting battery is more important. Also I like the USB-C-plug that you can't put in the wrong way - you know USB is the only plug where you have only two directions, but always need three tries until you get it right
For someone who had a X Pure I'm quite sure Touchwiz is a no-go (for me it is, since I had a Galaxy S3 I won't buy a Samsung anymore), so S7 or S8 are pointless.
Buy oneplus 3t
This is the biggest of an Android phone I'm willing to get. I am eyeing the Xperia X Compact because I want a small phone. If This had NFC for the US version I would have bought it right away, since it doesn't I will have to pass.

I wouldn't use Asus even if I was stranded on top of Mt. Everest! Zf2 burn me with them cause they never update their phones! Zf3 still on 6.0, so is the zf2. So much bloat you can't uninstall with them. Only plus is I think the top of the line zf3 has the 820? Also if you care about ROMs, then I don't think the zf3 has a lot of that going on now. I have a strong feeling the g5 will be packed with roms in no time

I like the OnePlus 3T...but my budget is $300 (can bend enough to be $300 plus tax, shipping, etc but not more than that)
What would be your recommendation within that range? Is there a better phone within that range than the G5 Plus?
Also, I am really only interested in phones with warranty so I don't want to buy a used one on swappa, etc.
Thanks for all the feedback!

I would suggest you to go for it buddy. You'll definitely not gonna mind anything. I don't see any other phone in this price range better than this. Development will be as good as previous generation I think. So I think you should go for it.

I'm very impressed with the g5 plus 64gb version. I had a op3, note 5, s7, s7edge. The features on this make it as good or better than those flagships. Camera and LCD vs amoled are the only drawbacks. Love Moto display and all the gestures, plus killer feature for me is gesture navigation on fingerprint reader, is the bomb! Battery life is stellar!

I had three ZF2s. Phantom touch, 1/3 of the screen went black, and then random hangs in a year and a half.
The first two were under warranty, requiring me to send the phone in, which took like a week and a half.
Total crap.
This phone has been voted best budget phone for the money on many different sites. I guess that could change every month a new phone is released though
I need to get a new phone since my lg G4 died... I find that the OS on Motorola is way better and I have had Samsungs and LG.
I will recommend it, besides any cel will eventually die. So imho I will no longer spend tons of useless money just to be fancy with the mobile phone.

I took advantage of the free $15 offer when you buy a $75 gift card to help pay for my Moto G5 Plus 64GB from Amazon.com (I mention this since you are in the USA). I also got 5% off by using the Amazon.com credit card (5% back in Amazon.com "points"), and, I had about $112 in "gift card" credit. I figured since I had made my OnePlus One last for more than three years, and I was able to talk customer service into giving me $12 off the $299 price, I couldn't say no to getting a new phone any longer. I might prefer a 5.5" screen over 5.2" but I'm not sure, I figured it'd be nice to try, see how it feels to have a slightly smaller phone in my pocket, and, maybe ever so slightly easier to use it one handed? I find that I often use my phone one-handed and I can't quite reach sometimes.
On the plus side, I'm really excited about the lower megapixel camera with it's fairly large sensor and wide aperture lens at F/1.7 - I know some people have complained about the camera on this phone, but I expect to get great results regardless - I don't know why it's not working well for them?
The only thing that really upsets me about the Moto G5 Plus is the Micro USB charging port instead of the new standard USB C port. I may have to see about doing some kind of wireless charging mod to my phone because I'm really getting tired of Micro USB.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
I don't understand why I see a few users saying the camera is bad - website reviews are liking the camera, and, it is the same chip as the "high end" Galaxy S7 cameras. Is the camera APP really that bad? Hopefully any issues will be addressed by either A) update or B) 3rd party camera APP/tweaks/mods.

Actually, what I've red from people that have had the Z and now moved to the G5 Plus is that the G5 Plus has better battery life, presumably because the newer 625 CPU is more efficient.

What do you think which chipset is being used in the Moto Z Play?
(Hint: Same!)
Think you are talking about Moto Z, not Moto Z Play.

Worth the upgrade?

Hi users and developers ,I am pretty much confused as for I should pick Moto g4+(3,32) by handing over my Moto Turbo (3,64),so can suggest your views as if it'd be a worthy upgrade or not?as far as I know the g4+ has software glitches creating the performance issues and wonder if they could solved by installing custom ROMs? awaiting for a quick reply, thanks in advance ??
no clue if it's a n upgrade
Don't know anything about your current phone.-
No software issue ever on my g4 plus.
The g4 plus is ok for a cheapy phone.
i DO have ghost touch off and on which is a pain in the ass though.
No compass also, some people want that.

if you can buy G5+ or G5s+ go for them as G4+ is a heater and have different problems for different users.
you should get g5+ which is defiantly good phone than g4+
The G5+ looks much better if you can afford it. As others said, the compass is missed in the G4+. Other than that, it's a great phone with a great battery life and I don't have ghost touch issues if I leave the screen brightness below 50%.
You should not go for g4+
I must tell you this phone heats a lot especially when you record a video, no matter which rom you are on. And there are different issues with different users like ghost touch, screen burn, random shutdowns/reboots,etc.

Nope don't ever pick g4+ when g5+ or g5s+ are way better in heat management and have premium design.

Go for g5+ instead of g4+. I'm currently using the g4+ and recently bought the g5+ for my brother and i must say that g5+ was 100 times better than the g4+. G4+ heats a lot if u play games and browsing with data etc... Whereas the g5+ doesn't even get warm with extreme gaming and multitasking, browsing etc...Also the battery life is terrible in g4+ as we have to charge for 2 times a day (my usage may differ with others) but on the g5+,the battery life is awesome. Note that both are having 3000mah battery but the processors are different which makes the g5+ more battery efficient and no heat rejection. Camera is also better in g5+ even though g4+ also takes good photos. Overall if u want to buy new phone i will 100% recommend g5+ over g4+ as i have seen both phones and used it.
I see lot of ppl recommending g5, but that was not your question!
I find the g4 to have a really nice and active community with a lot of stable and experimental roms. Oreo is soon to be stable.
The g5 is a newer device which will be upgraded to oreo officially, but is a more expensive device and it doesn't have official TWRP nor official lineageOS yet.
I have had many problems with my g4+ and it's replacement from Moto. On my first one I had a massive screen burn in issue, after 5 minutes of charging you could see the status bar icons when the status bar wasn't there. With the replacement, it kept bending so that if you put it on a flat surface only the top and bottom would be touching with the middle arcing upward about a millimeter. I also have had ghost touch issues on the replacement that happened whether or not it was charging. The only fix I found for that was to keep the brightness low. the G4+ is a fantastic phone for the price, if you can get one with no issues. As far as whether or not it is an upgrade from your Motorola Droid Turbo, here is a link to phone arena that compares the specs of the two phones (64 gigabyte models of each). I hope this helps you out, have a great day.
I have just purchased an used Moto G4 Plus XT1644 4GB + 64GB today at B&H Photo in excellent condition (10 out of 10), at least that's how they described it, for $138.50 shipped. It's arriving on Thursday. But I was not aware of these heating issues, screen burn in / ghost touches and so on... So now I'm kinda worried about my decision... My wife had an iPhone 6 and I converted her to a Moto G5 Plus about 3 to 4 months ago. She's very happy with the phone.
I only went with the G4 Plus because of the extra RAM, plenty storage space, external SD card reader and larger screen compared to the G5 Plus (*for the price I paid*). Most importantly, I bought the G4 Plus because it has ElementalX kernel, official Lineage OS support and TWRP as well. The combination of these three kept my Nexus 5 going for 3+ years before it gave up on me a few months ago. My N5 still works but it randomly shuts down and reboots when using demanding tasks like taking photos or when it heats up. As long as I can keep it frozen (out of the freezer - literally) it works just fine though. I've been using a crappy $60 Amazon Prime Exclusive phone, the Blu R1 HD on stock Marshmallow + Magisk / Xposed / Gravity Box / N-ify. Performance is fine considering what I paid for it. Thanks to the infamous fire.apk that plagued the R1 HD for months, I managed to get a full refund for that phone today. So I've got a free phone with malware basically.
I really wanted a 5.5" to 6" phone with good dev support on the cheap but as you know, both the G5 Plus / G5S Plus have a smaller 5.2" and very little dev support (compared to the G4 Plus). So I went with lower price, better dev support and slightly bigger screen on the G4 Plus.

Thanks! But have you checked that page out? It's a very random, make a wish type of messages that no one cares to reply based on personal experience with the device. My post was in hopes of a feedback from people who currently own that device that I just bought. Because I was wondering if I should have invested more money on upgrading to the G5 Plus. "Worth the upgrade?" which I honestly think it's still on topic. If no one wants to take the time to entertain that thought it's fine. I just thought I'd share my own thoughts / reasoning behind my purchase of the G4 Plus instead of just "making a wish" that probably no one with answer objectively with authority on the subject. Get it?
Never mind. Bought a brand new G5 Plus 4+64 at Walmart for 154+tax. I think it's a better deal than the G4 Plus I purchased yesterday. I'll compare them both, particularly the screen size difference and max brightness. But I think you can't beat that price on a brand new phone.
