Any chance to get google assistant?! - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I was going to buy a pixel, but I changed my mind and realized that it's not worth it to spend 700$ on pixel, so I bought a 6p.
If google decides to keep it's AI exclusive to pixels, can it be ported when android 7.1 gets released?!

Sooner or later Google needs more and more data to improve the performance of the assistent, so I'm pretty confident, they will push it out to other than the Pixel phones.

That's great thank you

Yes I think you're right.
I would bet it will be released with official final 7.1 update, but I don't think it will be enabled in 7.1 preview.

This is the Nexus threads. We're all nerds. We'll find a way to port those features over just be patient.

In the general section someone is saying that installing google assistant works after changing API in build.prop: http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-6p/general/boot-google-pixel-xl-t3477182/page3

Do NOT change the API level. All of your Gapps will force close / break. Follow this guide to obtain Assistant.

[DISCUSSION] Android M for Bacon!

So as some of you may or may not know tomorrow is Google I/O. And like last year Google will be announcing Android M. It will also most likely release an "M Preview" for the Nexus 6 and 9. Do you guys think it would be possible to port the M Preview from the Nexus 6 to OnePlus One. Also this thread is for everything related to Android M for the OnePlus One
Do you remember situation with Lollipop? I think it will be in the same way
It may be possible, though unlikely. It's just not really worth it. Too many bugs and instability. This time around I'll be looking forward to ports for the nexus 5. As I think it won't get Dev preview

Android M Developer Preview will be available today for Nexus phones. How long until someone makes port to Bacon, or how long until we see first ROM:? :fingers-crossed:

Here they go!
Guess it would be pretty sweet to get a little blend of a ROM with the cherry pickins from the Android M preview.
I think we will get the android m port when Google releases the sources of it.
Liking the new Google photos app, seems pretty slick and great that they detached it from Google+. Seems like they've refined Lollipop a bit and added some decent features. I've seen theres an option for dark theme built in now, maybe not as big a deal to us as we have total theme/customisation control, but the Nexus 6 users are going to appreciate that with their amoled display. Interested to see the app permission/privacy thing in a bit more detail as well. They sorted the volume control (mostly) with an expandable panel although is silent mode still missing?
Android M comes with App Permissions which is slick! Doze mode sounds cool but it doesn't seem to work with Google Play Services
If anyone is interested, the new google camera, search app and play services from the M-preview are already available on apkmirror (haven't tried them, son don't shoot me if they don't work).
Is it me, or is M just a slight update to lollipop?.. Why M and not 5.2?.. Most of the "features" are apps, not the OS.. The OS only got a few changes and is still virtually Lollipop.. I'm happy for the update, but, I had higher hopes for a full "version" jump..

I've tried them - DO NOT INSTALL !
First, you have to manually uninstall existing apps (uninstall updates, disable the built-in apps, reboot device). This allows installation of the new packages.
Second, the device will NOT boot - the new GMS triggers a crash in ProcessManager which brings down the whole system - you will probably have to re-flash the entire shebang.

Google app is working fine and Google Camera crashes on Panorama. that's all I've found atm.
So just GMS must be avoided. Also, for me apps installed just fine w/o uninstalling/rebooting
You guys should explain if these apks replace system apps or Google apps from play store

That's expected as you need a system lib to use the feature and installing google camera as a user app does not provide that.
It is clearly not possible to port this over. Our device uses heavy caf optimizations in kernel and framework (includes CM and Oxygen). Simply using the frameworks and app core from m will always result in a not booting device. We will have to wait for the source to be published.

Is it possible to do fingerprint scanning via the screen, with software? Or does it have o be a separate piece of hardware?
I assume hardware
Do we have to wait for I/O to end before Google throws the switch to the M preview? I for see several servers crashing for about 2 days or at least 6-10 hours before a stead fast DL.

I've never flashed a developer preview before. Is it possible to flash with a nexus toolkit or does it need to be done in adb?

It is really pretty underwhelming for a version uptick. It seriously looks like you could use M and never notice you didn't have Lollipop. Seems like Google is going all Mozilla in terms of versioning.
They already mentioned that there were minor tweaks to the core experience, but they probably don't feel they were worth highlighting.
L was a huge visual revolution. Why did people expect M was going to have a big graphical overhaul or update?

Probably because most people expect a major name-branded update to have something they'd visually notice....not a collection of under-the-hood bug fixes and side improvements that you could easily never notice. Because all the stuff they highlighted are things that even power users might never touch or notice were there.
I suppose that's fair, but on their yearly update schedule I'm betting just about every update in the future will be name-branded, and I doubt they'll all be UI-heavy. Either way, I still see a lot I'm excited for. Android Pay will be nice as someone who uses but has grown tired of Wallet, and contextual Google Now in apps is pretty cool as well.

Yup just like the crazy differences between Froyo and Gingerbread. Or the transformation of Jelly Bean into Kit Kat.
In reality we have no idea what visual changes will be made because the software is not finalized. The M preview is just a dev preview so that apps can be updated with the latest APIs from day 1. They barely showed anything as it relates to M that would show any real visual differences.
People act surprised that M looks the same as L. Look at Google history most updates don't change too much (if at all) from updates. ICS to JB etc. Yes GB did have a green theme but that was already having several updates with minimal ui changes except maybe a launcher. Hell even KK was very similar to JB. Take away google now launcher and visually they look the same

The most frustrating thing is there are allegedly "1000s" of bug fixes from reports. They claim they're in the M preview, and they claim said preview will be available later today....I know this is a revolutionary thought, so hold on to your hat, but why not push those fixes to Lollipop and publish 5.1.2 next week? Rather than force users to have to wait possibly 5-12 months for an update they may never get (depending on their device OEM)?
The alleged number of fixes in M are an order of magnitude greater than the number of fixes in all the Lollipop updates for the Nexus 6, combined, thus far. And Lollipop is still pretty buggy, especially if you're not on a Nexus.

IIRC KK brought a bunch of notification tray improvements in ICS and JB. But that was ages ago, and I'm going off memory. Also KK ran a ton better than ICS or JB.

Already tried to dump APKs, almost everything is for arm64, i think ports will not be such a thing. The included launcher and wallpaper picker are 32bit tho, but are the same as those leaked before, with a different signature tho
Unfortunate if true. I was curious what might be ported to the N6.
Someone can Im sure, and hopefully integrate Google assistant into our roms, that's the only thing I want, pixel launcher is already on my phone
Does anybody have an extractable system image, where I can pull alarms, ringtones, notifications and the SystemUI and Framework? I wouldn't mind getting ahold of that new battery icon.
I was able to unrar the images posted via that link and was able to simply ext4fuse mount them. No need to run through sim2img it appears. The media ringtones and notifications appear to be the same files that were released back in August.

@Yasharkhan: I don't think Google Assistant will ever appear on the Nexus 6, for a very simple reason: the 32/64-bit divide. The Pixel/Pixel XL devices run a 64-bit Snapdragon 821 while the Snapdragon 805 in the Nexus 6 is only a 32-bit processor. 64-bit processors can run 32-bit apps, as evident by the Pixel launcher being a 32-bit app in a 64-bit system, but 32-bit processors cannot run 64-bit apps. If Google makes the Google Assistant a 64-bit app and does not create a 32-bit version, even if we could install it on the Nexus 6 it won't run. Since the Assistant is not an open source app, no one would be able to build a 32-bit version that would run on the Nexus 6.
I'd like to be wrong on this one, but the Assistant is an exclusive that only the 5X and 6P are going to get, if Google decides to provide it.
absolutely correct!

Interestingly, however, we can already install Allo, which has the Assistant. I don't think I would put it past Google to offer a 32 bit option since the code base for it is already there. 64 bit devices may see it before the N6 simply because someone will port it over to other 64 bit devices from the Pixel. But otherwise, I think Google is going to to play the long game here (maintaining official Pixel exclusivity for a while) and eventually release it for any device that can support API level 24 (?) If memory serves, Now On Tap had this kind of exclusivity when it first appeared with the 6P and 5X
With the Nexus 6 being Google's last 32-bit device, and with the Pixel line being 64-bit only, chances of the N6 getting the Assistant are between slim and none. Allo is not a terribly good example. While it does have an assistant, the assistant supposedly only works in Allo. A big stumbling block in porting the Assistant from Allo would be Google's penchant for encrypting their code.
I would like to be wrong. I'd like to think we'll get the Assistant. However, I don't see it happening.
Is the new launcher a newer version than what has leaked? if so, can it be pulled out, and posted as an APK?

I don't mean that we will see a "port" to 32 bit devices. I mean we may see official Google support sometime in the 7.x lifetime. As long as the N6 receives official 7.1 and up (which according to what I read today, the N6 may not. 7.1 will only go to devices that can support Daydream... and unless there is indeed official support for Vulcan (different argument entirely...and I don't mean developer support like Qualcomm has insinuated will be possible)), the N6 may not see 7.1 onwards.
I guess I need to upgrade to a 6p, to take advantage of a lot of the future apps.
We won't see official support, as it's not in Google's best interests to support a device that is two years old with a feature that is an exclusive on the Pixel/Pixel XL. The 32/64-bit divide is a convenient excuse to not provide the Assistant. Same goes for Vulkan.
We won't be seeing Android 7.1 anytime soon, if ever. Google has apparently not released any code related to 7.1.

Regarding Google assistant for our nexus 6.
Found this mod in Nexus 6P forum and was able to implement it in my Nexus 6 successfully.

Did not require flashing/porting anything at all. Must be on any stock or stock based Nougat ROM (I use latest Nutty Nexus by RachetPanda)
Warning : Experiment at your own risk. Editing build.prop may cause your device to not function properly.
My exact steps-
1. Make sure you have Google App (6.5.35.21 or newer)
2. Add ro.opa.eligible_device=true to the end of your build.prop
3. Edit build.prop and change ro.product.model=Nexus 6 to ro.product.model=Pixel
4. Clear Google App data and remove your Google account.
5. Reboot.
6. After reboot add your google account and activate Now on Tap. This will walk you through setting up Google Assistant
Bugs : Encountered none so far.
Well, contrary to what we have been saying, Google just officially said that the N6 will indeed get 7.1
And near the end is this line:
"...in early December, we’ll roll out updates to the full lineup of supported devices — Nexus 6, 5X, 6P, 9, Player, Pixel C, and supported Android One devices..."

Android Go on Nexus 6?

Android Go can work on a very basic setup as Google says. So, if someone can make it work on our Nexus 6... We can extend our Nexus' life for a few more years. I dont know if Android Go is 64 bit only... But if a 32 bit version is available, then can someone port it for the Shamu? Just an idea!

Yeah, I think he meant about Android Go Oreo 8.1 release for lower end devices and I think our nexus is a lower end. Oreo is running great on our device without any lag and we will also be getting 8.1 in few days. I'm more Happy and satisfied with oreo than nougat on my nexus. I don't know. I have a Nexus 6 and I cannot say I have had any problem with app updates hogging more resources. Perhaps you just need to wipe your phone and start fresh.
@runekock has the right answer here. Android Go is for devices in developing countries with limited RAM and expensive data usage. According to the article I read on the portal the example was a city where its phone owners keep their phones on airplane mode all the time unless needed. Android Go resolves both problems by breaking Google Play Services into different modules and by looking for WiFi whenever possible.
The N6, while it could run Android Go, I believe would be severely hampered in its performance. Plus, there's no need as Android 8 runs fine on it.

At Google IO
I don't know why Google only want to change thingd that are useful every version of Android. If some features are good, leave it. Example: Anyone wants to clear a notification in only one way? or, who wants to show the notch in the screenshots?
I don't understand Google..
Probably later after the OnePlus 7 gets it,summer sometime I would say
This is still in early beta state with a lot of bugs even on pixel devices:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GE4QN6zkiLQ
After seeing more and more of OOS features OP already implemented and Google sells it as 'new feature' in Q with insane amount of bugs... I am an android fan, but this is the first version I am not excited about.
