Some Nexus 5X devices are getting stuck in bootloops after upgrading to Android 7.0 - Nexus 5X General

http://www.androidauthority.com/nexus-5x-android-7-nougat-bootloop-issue-717698/
So I read this article back on September 21st and thought, "Well I've been using 7.0 since it was N Preview 3 and upgraded to final release just fine. I should be good." Then two nights ago while I was just browsing online, it happened to me and I got an endless bootloop. Mind you, I am totally stock and unrooted (Support does ask if you are by the way) which is a first for me as I usually ended up rooting and customizing my previous phones. All I saw was the Google logo for 5-10 seconds, then it turn off, back to the logo, and repeat. I followed the trouble shooting steps to clear the cache and the factory reset. At first I couldn't even get to those options but letting the phone rest in power off for a few minutes fixed that. But it's still bootlooping on me. Good thing Google's customer support is 24/7, I'm within my 1 year warranty (Purchased Sept 2015 but didn't receive and activate until end of Oct 2015), and I'll be receiving my free replacement in the mail in the next few days.
Only "issues" are I'm going to lose my Ice Blue color and will be getting a black one, I splurged for the expedited shipping ($18.99 which I don't think they'll cover), and it'll be a little bit as it's 1-2 days for processing and 1 day (hopefully) shipping. They do put a hold on my credit card for the total price which they remove once the old phone gets shipped. I have 14 days to ship the old one which they do provide shipping and packing slips for free. That makes sense someone could try to lie and scam to get a free phone without some kind of collateral.
Overall, I was pretty satisfied with the support I got and was really tempted to splurge on the Googe Pixel and pay $27/month prior to this happening. But with this replacement, I'm hoping that my original unit was defective in performance (That's what comments would say) as it slowed down way more than it should on things that would be pretty simple especially websites. Guess I'll wait for the Pixel 2 next year.
Update:
Looks like the expedited shipping was covered by them. The hold was removed from my credit card and no shipping charge remaining.

IMO the original information from the Google reply is confusing. In the context they were answering it makes it seem like the hardware problem is between 7.0 and the hardware. IMO the hardware problem is actually eMMC that is close to failing and it could have happened on MM as well (there have been sporadic posts of this happening since release). So Google is right, it is a hardware problem, but the implication that it is related to Android 7.0 and you'd be all safe with 6.0.x is IMO deceptive.

Well hopefully there was an eMMC fix with the one I just received today. Let's see how it performs for me.

If it was manufactured later (or a refurb) there is at least the possibility the eMMC chip might be of different batch, but if it was manufactured back in 10/2015 timeframe, I doubt Google knew about the problem back then so there would be zero chance it has some newer eMMC chip. Even if it was manufactured after that there is no guarantee they knew about the problem and made a manufacturing change.
I don't think it is a highly prevalent problem, but it occurs more than what is usual with phones. There are plenty of 5x's which don't experience the problem. You will probably be fine.
IMO these eMMC chips that they used have a higher failure rate than normal but probably is still a low absolute number relative to number of phones sold. It doesn't take that many posts about permanently bootlooped phones to make it seem like an epidemic when it might not be when looking at the overall picture.

Well if this fails again within 1 year I'll take another replacement. LOL. Probably sell it at that point and put it towards whatever Google is out with then.

It is possible it might be some different hardware defect with solder joints rather than eMMC chip itself. Just a working theory that the 5x may suffer a hardware problem acknowledged for its cousin the LG G4
http://forum.xda-developers.com/nexus-5x/general/5x-bootloop-cause-fix-t3476794

So after a good 3 days of use, I can say my original release day 5X probably did have some kind of defect. It's amazing how much smoother my replacement has been and I haven't changed my apps or usage. There are times of delay and lag here and there but not to the point where it wasn't usable like unscrollable web pages or non-responsive back, home, recent apps buttons like my old phone. Eventually it will catch up and things go back to working smoothly without the need to restart the phone. I should've requested a replacement months ago! I just didn't believe people when they said it was defective and I don't realize how easy and quick it was to get a replacement. Oh well.

I must say this thread is quite quiet...
Mine died a week ago while traveling.
It was actually running 7.0 for quite some time. but I think it's eMMC failing because the only major change I had was doing more videos in 4k (that sometimes stuttered).
Then one morning without warning it rebooted and died.
Hope they'll replace it as my purchase date was 10/9 ...
However, I'm afraid there's a defect similar to the G4 one because it seems very similar.
Also as written above, might be related to the reports of some users as I had prior to 7.0 betas of lags. my device felt really laggy when I first bought it.

What's your S/N number?

Happened to mine five days ago. Sent to repair (Norway) but got a New one anyway. To hard to switch phones after years on nexus. Got a New OTA update just now, related?

I sent mine in to LG after it randomly shut down and bootlooped using maps. They reported this issue was with the flash memory, so everyone saying the eMMC is likely correct.

Is the nougat bootloop problem will be resolved by google? I have Nexus 5x 32gb (h791 international version, manufactured 10/2015) with 6.0.1 and I'm too afraid to upgrade to 7.0 because officially Nexus 5x is not available in my country although there's LG smartphone service center here (I bought it online and let's just say it's virtually without warranty).

This was my experience as well. I had an earpiece speaker die in my 5x, so I would have gladly paid the $19 anyway, but much to my surprise, I didn't have to. Very glad I bought the phone through the Play store now, the support and exchange process was excellent.

There's kind of a debate going on as to whether it's really the update or if it's an eMMC hardware issue.
Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk

The only reason I think it's eMMC or at least the connection with it is:
- My recovery won't always load also.
- TWRP would also freeze even if I try to boot into it without flashing it.
- I've flashed factory image without wiping data. result: It did boot once but got stuck and reboot after few minutes of hiccups.
- It freezes in different parts when loading.
- My device worked well for a long time with 7.0. more than a month / since the first day the 7.0 OTA from the 7.0 beta was out...
- I saw some hiccups few days before it died randomly when shooting 4K videos. felt like dropouts.
(placebo: my device was sluggish with 6.0 and 7.0 beta actually made it functional. with 6.0 I was quite disappointed with the performance).

It is definitely a hardware problem.
In many cases eMMC is involved.
It is unclear whether the chip is failing or the solder joints are failing.
LG has acknowledge a defect with the LG G4 (cousin of 5x) where the solder joints were failing.
There are videos showing heating the chip using SMD hot air rework station can restore functionality on a LG G4. I don't know of anybody who has tried same with 5x.
Given there were reports of phones on Marshmallow just rebooting in the middle of seemingly innocuous things like texting and then being stuck in a bootloop with all stock software, locked bootloader, IMO Android 7 has little to do with the problem and it is mostly coincidental it happens after an update. It is possible Android 7 runs the CPU a little more and maybe that exacerbates a solder joint problem for some phones, but the core problem would still be solder joints as melting point of lead-free solder is quite high (220C/428F)

Do you remember if you ever looked to see whether your "big" cores (CPUs 5 & 6) were often disabled?
I am wondering if a solder joint problem can sometimes manifest itself in CPU operating in degraded condition where it doesn't run the "big" cores as often or at all.
I noticed on a friend's 5x, it was always running hot for some reason, which triggered a thermal safety measure where the "big" cores are disabled. Whenever the 5x is in that condition, it runs very sluggishly, but once the phone cools down, it goes back to running normal/fast.
It would be funny if alot of the complaints about the 5x being sluggish ended up being because of bad solder joints. Then the people that reported sluggishness would be correct and the people who reported things being snappy were also correct, the former really just had hardware defects, but not the obvious type.

I never did check how the cores were running but I did have a widget monitoring the temperature and would notice pretty high spikes. That last statement you made is the exact situation I was in. I guess I would rather have a sluggish performance defect than a burning battery one. LOL

Hardware Issues: None (so far). I'm actually VERY impressed, as I was quite nervous after the original N7 debacle. No screen lift, no dead/stuck pixels, no problems whatsoever. It feels very sturdy and well built as well, significantly better than the original. Now I just need to get a case to keep it that way.
Software Issues: Haven't had a chance to use it long enough to tell, but there is certainly one major issue affecting some people. I won't go into the details here (it's been discussed in other threads), but some devices seem to be unable to upgrade to the JSS15J OTA update due to a failure to validate one of the files. I bring this up here because, IMHO, it is a 'build quality' related issue, or more specifically a problem with QA. In all reported cases so far, none of these affected devices had the standard wallpaper installed, which seems to indicate that there was a flashing issue at the factory.
Overall, I am very happy with the unit. I wasn't sure whether I would buy it since I still liked my original N7, plus I have a new Dell Latitude 10 tablet I bought a few weeks ago, but I'm glad I went ahead and got it.

Yeah, I was originally planning on holding out for that version too. I have the N73G and, on occasion, found the 3G part to be quite useful. I was a bit hesitant to effectively downgrade to the standard version. However, I decided to go ahead with the standard 32GB version for a few reasons:
1) I rarely used the 3G.
2) When I did use it, I always had my cell phone and could have just tethered it.
3) The added cost to the unit (isn't it like +$70?), plus the $15/month I was paying to AT&T just wasn't worth it IMHO.
4) My two-week old Latitude 10 tablet has an aircard built-in and I have service for that too.
5) I wanted the new N7 now.
Assuming that the LTE version was available yesterday, I would say that I would have almost certainly bought it instead. But since it wasn't, I went ahead without it.
thought there was a thread for this already.. my issues are dust under the screen and dead pixels. returned my first for dead pixels.. my second has dust under it which is black on white and colored screens... I hardly notice it so I'm keeping it... and there's some light bleed up top.
Sent from my Nexus 7 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
No software issues here, but just found a dead pixel. I'm about to return it to Best Buy for a replacement.
So far no complaints about the build quality on mine. And that is a huge improvement over the 5 or so 2012 Nexus 7s I went through last July, haha.
I have some minor light bleed that is noticeable with dark backgrounds (like reading Kindle in night mode). But it's not bad enough that it bothers me.
I am on the latest update and have issues with GPS still with all location options enabled in every system setting and google settings for location.
I get quick locks on gps in GPS TEST and GPS STATUS, I load MAPS the newest version get a lock, then close and run gasbuddy get a lock, close run speedtest get a gps lock, then goto gps test again and after awhile it will completely stop locking on satellites and reset and then keeps showing a gps searching flashing icon top left screen but after awhile stops locking on to satellites and wont find any! Then you got to reboot everytime you want to use gps...
And my previous trick for other devices to fix the gps does not work apparently! Please someone else do some extensive testing before my 14 day return window so I can see if its only my device or all new nexus 7 2013 devices. I know ASUS has a history of having messed up GPS hardware in their tablets....
Also I had issues with the camera hardware and or software wise with the stock android 4.3 camera app. Still need to do more testing but it was having issues in direct and bright sunlight during photo taking and video taking!
Camera issues fixed with latest update...
for gps I had to do this:
Knock on Wood, I think I got the gps problems nipped in the butt!
I had to reset the tablet from system settings after having both updates installed, when setting up tablet (initial boot) enable all location stuff except for the new android 4.3 wifi location while off option.. Also make sure to disable backup and restore options while doing the initial install.
Now so far GPS has been working steadily ever since first initial boot, no need to reset and power up again and after trying it for an hour all gps apps back and forth its still finding signal sometimes instant sometimes 20 seconds or so but no issues like before this time...
Working like it should now! I guess a hard reset after all updates was needed to reconfigure things!

I set up a return for exchange with Amazon. Looks like the 32gb's are out of stock so I will be waiting for them to ship me a new one. I wish Amazon had better info on the status of it, I would like to see it saying "will ship as soon as new stock comes in" or something.
I have 30 days to send them my old one or they will charge me for 2. I've got the label printed but I'd like to get the new one before I ship this back.

I received my 32GB Nexus 7 from Amazon this morning, and noticed a vertical line of green pixels. It eventually went away, but RMA'ing and have to wait until August 20th. So being impatient, I just ordered another on Google Play and will ship back the defective Amazon one after I get it.
A line of dead pixel from top to bottom on the left side of the screen. Light bleeding and on white background noticed yellow splits. Very disappointed.

Nice. Amazon emailed me giving me the option to just take a refund since they aren't in stock. I have a feeling they will get them in sooner than the 3-4 weeks that's currently estimate. I'm just gonna wait....they created a new order for $0 for a 32gb N7 for me so I'll be lookin for that to ship in a week or 2.
I did some test now in general. Noticed some dust on white background, and no email notifications.

Thought on Asus Products

In the future I think I may stay away from Asus products. I have had a lot of issues with them in the last several years. What has your experience been. To keep it simple to read please use a similar format as below.
Since mid to late 2010:
Asus G74 laptop:
- wired network port stopped working
- Touch pad stopped working
- Comes with software that is supposed to keep the drivers and software updated, it never worked. A quick internet search shows that no one's ever been able to get it to work. I haven't tried it recently, maybe I'll look into it.
Asus FT101 (Went through 3 unites):
- Had to exchange it twice in the first week. First time because it failed to boot on with on 24 hours. Second time it touch screen had issues with missing a lot of touches.
- After about a year or so the screen stopped working. I can Use HDMI it the device works but the screen won't display wont work (opened it up and the cable isn't loose).
- Keyboard dock battery stopped responding (taking or giving a charge)
- I don't recall if it had the slow memory IO issues, but I think it did.
Asus TF300 (went through 2 unites):
- First unite had to be exchanged again for touch screen issues. I couldn't even set up the device because phantom touches would open and close things all over the place and couldn't get it set up.
- Second TF300T worked, but like just about every Asus Tablet, until recently, had IO issues that seemd to get worse over time. It became painful to use at times. I still have it, aside from the IO issues it's a good device. I hope Android 4.3 will help it be a little letter with the IO issue.
- My TF300T does suffer from random reboots from time to time. Not very often, but it will on occasion reboot out of the blue.
Asus made Nexus 7 2013 (decide to keep, as other seem to have it worse):
- GPS issue as mentioned many places.
- Touchscreen grounding issue. If I'm not holding it in my hands (laying on table or mounted in car) it may stop responding to touches.
- My wireless charging work fine out of the box, but many have had issues. Some removed the back (at time putting a crack in it) to clean the contacts to get it working. Other have had multiple exchanges to get a unite that works out of the box.

This is my first experience with an Asus device and I'm not really enjoying it much either. After 2 replacements I finally got a device that doesn't have bad bleed or dead pixels but the colors seem slightly off, the bezel had multiple deformations that are visible in sunlight out of the box, and wireless charging doesn't work. No idea how I'm going to fix the latter, because I'm sure as hell not risking getting a worse screen in another replacement. A lot of little niggles with this device that really don't belong here especially with the higher retail price than last year's model.
Unfortunately I don't really have a choice since this is the first and only tablet that's ticked every box for me, unless apple is capable of miracles and releases a high-resolution iPad mini that isn't heavier and more expensive than last year's model.

Some have removed the back cover and cleaned the coil areas and gotten the charging working. Maybe that is has cleared up on it own over time and why it has started to work for some.

I really doubt apple will meet those requirements.
Asus used to be one of the go to brands for motherboards.
I think they have not done as well with building complete units.
Asus build great motherboards. Aside from that their Products are all subpar IMO.
Heh, all of my ASUS products have malfunctioned, except for my Xonar DX and netbook. (knocking on wood)
ASUS motherboard (fried)
ASUS netbook (still working)
ASUS Transformer TF101 (speakers blew out)
ASUS Xonar DX (still working)
ASUS Google Nexus 7 (2012) (screen issues, slow emmc chip)
ASUS Google Nexus 7 (2013) (bad battery, malfunctioning screen, light bleed)
I've had the Asus g74sx ROG laptop. It ran awesome and the power was phenomenal.
I've had the Asus TF300T it had good quality EXCEPT a sub par nand that had to be bypassed.
I've had the Asus TF700 it had good quality EXCEPT a sub par nand that I knew about before purchase and bypassed.
I've had the Asus Nexus 7 2013 and I find it superb on every level so far.

They can if they want to, it's more of a question of whether it's possible to do so without eating into their profit margins and thus far it seems like that isn't the case. There's also the fact that the high resolution mini sales will significantly eat into regular ipad sales, so I don't see it happening this year. My best guess is that recent WSJ article is simply an attempt from Apple to have people on the fence hold off on purchasing Nexus 7s.
As far as the wireless charger is concerned, I really don't want to risk cracking the back cover opening it up since I don't use a case.
I had an m50sv from 2005 that has been in constant use and is now my linux media server. Started to get real hot a few years down the line, found out it had one of those faulty 8400m chips in it. Despite the high temps its been running strong and has yet to explode on me.
Asus TF101, still used alongside the N7 and my other devices,.
Zenbook ux32vd, my current laptop and is used for everything other than serious gaming, for which i use my desktop for.
Asus motherboards in all my computers, a few asus GPUs and xonar soundcards.
Had zero issues with all my Asus stuff, aside from the 8400m thing, but that was an Nvidia fault that affected all laptops with that chip in it.
I must say that I had SOME problems with Asus products, but not as much as I had with Gigabyte or Samsung and BenQ.
At this moment I have 3 PCs running with Asus motherboard, all of them are 3+ years old, my gfx card it's been overclocked since day 1 and still runs as the first day (3+ years old).
I got an ASUS router as well RT-N66U, best thing I've ever had in years, not even linksys gets close, and I have 2 Asus 24" IPS Screens that have 3+ years as well.
Also LG is another brand I have a lot of stuff and never had single problem.
Well, I'm glad to hear that some people have had little to no issues with their Asus products. I seem to have had to exchange products on several occasion and had issues pop up (GPS, touch screen issues on several tablets). I just think their QC is not up to snuff.
I'm glad the the IO issues seems to have been fixed, but these many GPS and touch screen issues is just too much, i think. Especiall in light of the issues I have had with just about every Asus product I have owned.
I do have two Asus Monitors that I have had no issues with for over a year. I also think they are the make the best motherboards.
Perhaps next time they make a seemingly nice tablet or Nexus device I wait before buying and not be an early adopter.
Actually, ASUS tied for most reliable laptop after Apple:

Yes,I was aware of that. They have good scores for their laptops, but also are a small portion of the computer market. I would get an other Asus laptop when the time comes.
But most of my issues have been with their tablets. I'm sure it not all of them, but their QC seems lacking on all the Asus tablets I've owned. Maybe it's bad luck on my part. But at least this N7 2013 is the best one so far, despite my GPS not always being 100% and the grounding issue I'm experiencing.
I hear they be making the next Nexus 10. If it's a compelling device I may be interested, but will not likely be an early adopter.
I like Asus they are usually a good bang for the buck devices, I'm just a little iffy on their QC.

Yeah, I agree with you... this is really absurd. Now we have people trying to create their own grounding solutions. I used to love Asus but my most recent laptop is Samsung and I am very happy.
I love Android, I love the Nexus ( I have an original one as well as new one but it doesn't work). I love Google. But this experience (I have exchanged my Nexus 5 times so far and still do not have a good unit) has left me thinking of giving Apple another try. They have had issues in the past with quality control like all other companies, but not nearly on this scale. I cannot believe I exchanged my device 5 times and still it doesn't work. I am not content to wait for Google to come out with a "Fix". In the meanwhile, 14 day return policy will expire. No thanks... I will keep exchanging until working unit or I will give up, keep my original Nexus and wait for iPad Mini Retina.
I purchased several ASUS products and I am satisfied with most of them. I forgot what's the year I bought them though.
1. ASUS EeePC 1000HE
Still remember the netbook age? Over 10 hours of battery life and the portability are very impressive. Bought one for school when I was still in college so that I can play around online when having boring lectures. No issue with this netbook at all.
2. ASUS EeePC 1005HA
Basically I sold my 1000HE for this one becuase of the slick design. I love it so much. Still rocking 9 hours of battery life. No issue at all with this one too.
3. ASUS Maximus III Gene
Have been using this MB for more than 3 years. It's still rocking today. Paired with i7-870 and GTX460. No complaints.
4. ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity TF700T (with Keyboard Dock)
This is the one I had most issues with ASUS products. Having the famous I/O issue and screen lift up issue. The I/O issue issue is driving me nuts. I ended up selling the whole set.
5. ASUS VivoBook X202E
I sold my 1005HA recently and bought this one. Netbook is too slow for me now. So far the only issue is that the touch pad has a little bump on it. Quality control of ASUS is not doing a good job. Otherwise, no complaints for this device so far.
6. Nexus 7 (2013) 32GB
One of the most popular tablets now. I only encountered the touch issue once. Light bleed is not serious and it doesn't bother me at all. I can live with that. I had a Samsung tablet before and it has light bleed also. I believe this is a common problem for LCD now. I haven't met any other problem till now. No random reboot, no dead pixels, wireless charging working (with Samsung wireless charging pad), etc. I am very satisfied with it.
I love my asus stuff!
I have a LOT of Asus prodcuts. Probably more than the average user of this board
I started with 2 x83VB-X2s refurbed from tiger direct. They are both still running strong with little issues other than they need new batteries. They've been around for close to 7 years now. Discreet Nvidia, they are AWESOME.
ulFt20 - for my employer - worked great as a travel beast for 3 years until upgrade required. First gen i3, everything still works.
I bought a tf201 when the first came out. Issues out the wazuuuu. GPS was ****, wifi is not bad, screen showed some bleed, and I/O issues.
That being said, it still works, my dad dented the bezel of the tablet itself with a case of beer, and everything still works. Even bought the keyboard, it still works.
I bought an N53SV. Core i7, 6gb, nvidia 540M. Typing on it now. HEAVY, but I love it. Great for work, and some games, although not mega-portable.
Employer upgraded to the zenbook prime, and aside from an issue with the charger, which asus promptly replaced for us 3 times without payment on our end, it has been a dream, and is absolutely gorgeous!
COUNTLESS n66/AC66 routers. I hand these out as suggestions for clients for their unreal feature set, unbeatable speed, and ability to use custom firmware.
I build my recent gaming rig on an asus p8z77-i itx board, its unreal!
I have an M2N-sli deluxe running an old AMD X2 6000+ and it still runs like day one.
Buying into the first production run of products is ALWAYS risky. Remember Apple's iphone 4 bumper hand out deal. I have the nexus 7 2013, its my first nexus device (I run an S3 for a phone), and I've loved EVERY minute of owning it, even when I screw up a flash, I still love how easy it is to fix this thing.
Happy Owner here, of a nexus 7, and ALL things asus for the most part
Nothing but good things to say about Asus! By far my favorite tablet manufacturer! Hoping the rumors about the manufacturing the next N10 are true. If the N10 is made by Asus, then I'll own one of those too!
Asus Prime (TF201) 10.1" Tablet - still works great, gave it to my older sister Mothers Day, she uses it daily
Asus Infinity (TF700) 10.1" Tablet - still works great, still use it daily
Asus N7 FHD 7" Tablet - still works great, still use it daily
Asus RT-N66R wireless router - still works great, still use it daily
SwiftKey'ed from my '13 Nexus 7 FHD using XDA Premium HD
Amen. Plus their support sucks. They have caused physical damage to 2 of my devices over the past 3 years and would not own up to it.

http://www.squaretrade.com/laptop-reliability-1109/
You get one of the best 7" tablets around for 230$ and there is almost no delay in shipping and availability, of course that quality control can be on a very high level. Plus, most of the issues can be caused by kernel errors and not hardware.
I am at an hardware store internship and ASUS laptops are actually considered to be the most enduring ones.

Overheating Issues

Before anyone accuses me of bashing, bringing up things that have already previously been discussed, or just plain wants a go - I'm a huge HTC fan and adore their phones.
So I work for O2 in the UK as a Guru, I get to play with phones a lot - in fact it's all I do. From the moment I picked up the M9, I've decided it's the one for me over the S6 and Edge. There are, however, some issues. We all know that the camera isn't the best, the BoomSound may be a step back this year, but there's one thing that's really bugging me and concerning me. Overheating.
Overheating and the S810 has been covered a lot. However, it's a real issue and it needs to be tackled. My demo M9 is sat in front of me on the table right now, the screen is on medium brightness and the only app running is SoundCloud. So why is the phone noticeably hot to touch, when my iPhone and S6 are not when doing the same thing?
The software on this handset is final - we have M9's in stock ready to go for the 31'st. How is this acceptable?
The interesting thing is that my M8 also gets really hot when I use it, screen on and charging. Almost too hot to hold.
It may well be an issue with the HTC One phones and not the SoC. I don't know.
Maybe restart the phone again to see any applications not optimized/run properly? I'm also worried about this issue, hope there is fix otw
There's just an OTA out now which fixes the overheating.
Link: http://tweakers.net/reviews/3921/4/...nder-de-motorkap-de-64bit-snapdragon-810.html
Just because a device is shippped with release software, that doesn't mean it's final software.
This question is very easy to answer.
The HTC One M9 uses a S810 wich get hot faster than others recent SoCs used in iPhone 6 and S6.
Same thing happens in the LG G Flex 2 and both use heavy throttling to prevent the phone being too warm.
We can discuss why the S810 get warmer than Apple A7 and Exynos 7 but essentially, I think it's because A7 use less core with a lower frequency and Exynos 7 use a 14nm FinFET manufacturing process.

Please check if there is an update available. The issue should've been fixed.
The M9 has been shown to run hot, even after the thermal throttling "hotfix", pun intended (hotter than its competition). This isn't even disputed anymore.
Why? I don't know, but damn, am I curious.
One suggestion is that they have processor hotspots not being dealt with due to a high localized power density... so while the SoC power is OK, two or more hotspots in a localized area are exacerbating the situation (they quickly make the situation run out of control).
It only take one hotspot to trip the Tjunction profile. The rest of the SoC could be running fine. And this is either a problem with the Thermal Profiling and Cooling Spec (design or data sheet) or the Snapdragon 810 itself.

HTC One M9 - 41.7C
LG G3 - 42.6C
That's not hotter than competition. That's within the comptetion.
I can't help but think it is an issue with some handsets. I've read reviews that state that it isn't an issue and reviews that show some concern.

If you read the major reviews, they still state it runs very skin warm.
M8, S6 and IP6 are the M9 competition. And upcoming G4. G3 isn't.

@th3 - yes, because what you said was incorrect. Also, the difference between hottest and coolest is 3.6C. That's not a lot.

The display and the battery performance are also worse.
I think Qualcomm has tried to cover the problem as much as they could but it's very obvious that they have screwed up with this processor, that they're even starting to talk about the "much better much cooler" S815 already.
It's not HTC's problem (nor was it LG's when they tried to pin it on LG earlier), it's the processor. All HTC (or LG) can do is try to cut the load on the processor and basically run it at lower speeds so it doesn't get too hot. Obviously that will impact the performance, but that's all they can do with the software updates. They will just try to find the right balance between temperature and performance.
I was avoiding the S6 because of the Exynos not being favored in the Rom-developing community. But the rumors-turned-facts about the 810 SoC have me worried. Not particularly blaming Qualcomm, but it seemed like this issue has had almost half a year to be ironed out.
I think the most troubling is that I've read the SoC's clock speed has been reduced to lower overheating, and the thing still overheats. So even if you've been waiting nearly 15 months for Snapdragon 810 like me because they said it'd be a beast, its disappointing to know that having the chip run ans intended might melt your phone.
Also even if early reviews are to be taken with a grain of salt, I've been hearing about underclocking, overheating, screen and boomsound quality being a step back from the M8's, and camera being not that great. I'm positive in time they might fix alot of the issues the early releases have been suffering from, but I am not one to wait many months longer for those updates. Just the updates to get a new android version can be grueling, so I can't imagine waiting for an update to make the device finally comfortable to use. With the S6 just a few weaks away, without all the nasty rumors the M9's been having, I just might have to bite the bullet.
The good news, I hear Exynos is naturally better at emulated gaming which is something I always consider when buying a new mobile device. The bad news, it isn't Qualcomm, and I already bought screen protectors and cases for the M9, despite it not being out yet in America
Edit: I take back what I said about getting an S6. I did a search on release date, and it's released in India for $950 for the 32GB model. Unless they can make the 64GB model less than $720 in America, I'm not interested. Which isn't likely. I would have already had a Xiomi Mi Note 4 Pro if the damn thing wasn't impossible to get, and would have got a G Flex 2 if it came with more RAM.

Read the reviews. What you initially suggested is wrong and so is your selective comparison against the worst, non-competitor. It's still running hot, as every major review says. Even though it's not too much hotter, I agree and now acceptable to hold, it's still hotter, and still warm to hold.

I believe with people finally getting the phone, we will see if this problem is solved.
For a week I am using this gorgeous handheld, tons of blowing away emotions - no any significant overheat yet..
Correct me if I'm wrong, but if the software updates are, simply, throttling the chip to approx 1.5 it is no better than an m8, which I have ? Plus, Sense 7 will be on m8 "soon", so no need to upgrade.
Sense 7, custom, roms are available now.
NOT having "a go" at HTC, I've had about 7 different handsets in last 5 years.

How reliable is the Oneplus One now? (March 2016)

After weathering the storm of chaos as huge crowds rushed to get the One, hearing countless horror stories of failing phones and terrible support, and waiting for (hopefully) all hardware problems to rear their ugly faces, I'm at a loss now--in March 2016--as to whether or not buying a used phone, said to work perfectly by the seller and has been tested enough by natural selection, would be a good idea if I can only return DOAs.
I'm calling on everyone here not to post just epic sob-stories; instead, if you had an issue (hardware, software, firmware, or other) please post what it was, when it showed up (how much use, any possible user error that may have caused it), whether it was fixed (and if it was, what it was fixed by), how long it lasted, what ROM/software version you were on, and any other important info.
Thanks so much in advance; I really like the specs and the original reviews, but just can't be sure if it got back up after falling flat right out of the gate.

Nearly 2 years and no regrets..
I only got this phone at the end of 2015 and I haven't regretted a bit, ever. It's an amazing phone, I never had any problem with it. The metal around the screen is the only thing that wears out, it's not awful but it as some scratches, and I'm very careful. Believe me, for the price, this is still the best budget phone you can get
I have the ability to get it for as low as $180 here in the US. I know that is quite a good deal compared to the original price, but with the OPX having been released with similar specs and such I'm not quite sure I fully grasp whether or not this price is a steal, or just a good bargain. Thoughts?
Absolutely hate it. I regret trading my Nexus 6 for it. My data has been spotty and I keep getting random reboots. Today, I was using the GPS and Google Maps lost the ability to connect to my phone's mobile data during the commute. Completely overshot my destination, thanks OnePlus!

When it comes to data, I'm not too worried as I use tracfone (so I'm not really used to the convenience of data on the go) and have great coverage around here--unless it is so significantly worse than the Nexus 6 so as to cause a steady 3-4 bars on one to equal intermittent service on the other.
For the random reboots, when did they start? What ROM? When do they happen?

On paper, the OnePlus One and OnePlus X may seem similar, but it's only so much.
The OPO features (as compared to the OPX)
> a higher-tier variant of the Snapdragon 801 (MSM8974AC) @ 2.5ghz
> a larger 5.5in LTPS (IPS LCD) display (screen size is subjective, some people prefer smaller)
> better band support for US Carriers (the OPX lacks necessary bands)
> a better rear-facing camera (capable of 4K DCI/UHD recording) and can be vastly improved with Sultan's modifications
> WIFI AC + Dual band (2.4/5.0ghz)
> a larger 3100mah battery
> NFC (the OPX doesn't have NFC, seriously)
But most importantly, the OPO is sustained by one of the largest dev communities ever, right here at XDA. Even after OnePlus/Cyanogen discontinues official support for the device, the community will keep it alive and strong for a VERY long time. The OPX lacks this kind of love and support. Unsurprisingly, OnePlus themselves seem to be neglecting the OPX.
The OPX features (as compared to the OPO)
> a more portable 5in AMOLED display
> a better front-facing camera
I might sound biased, but that is justified by everything I've just listed. It's clear who's the winner here.

Thanks for the insight. I kind of wonder why it's so cheap when it's so competitive with other phones of the time. The Galaxy s5 seems to go, used, for between $250-300 while the OPO goes for between 200-225 normally. I get that last generation phones can go down in price, but it seemed unexpected that it didn't even out to pretty much the same used price as most of those other phones. I was just thinking there must be something I was missing.

This is expected. The Galaxy S5 is a Samsung device and as with all popular brands, these devices can go for a high price, from when they're released to even a few years later.
The OnePlus One was OnePlus' very first device and it was named "The Flagship Killer" for a reason- that reason being it had the same specs as popular flagship devices (ie. Galaxy S5, Xperia Z3, HTC One M8) but costed much less than they did. This is why the OPO, new or used, continues to be sold for lower than any other popular flagship device.
As a note, OnePlus claims that they barely made any profit at the time due to selling the OPO for such a low price, but they actually had a lot of backup from their overseeing company, OPPO.
Trust me (and everyone here), the OPO is still an amazing device. Everything about it screams high quality.

For the random reboots, when did they start? What ROM? When do they happen?

Running Sultan's CM13 - had similar issues with CM12. Switched to CM13 because Sultan was actively developing it. Tried other roms but I didn't like them as much as Sultan's rom. Charging is also atrocious - 2 hours to go from 10% to 100% with the stock cable and charger.
The funny thing is, I had full bars and data, GMaps just couldn't connect until I restarted the phone.
I had three reboots in the past hour. One with the phone laying on my desk. Another while scrolling through GroupMe. The final after I took a screenshot of my lockscreen. I don't use xposed or any other customization app.
Best phone ever released till date, we can edit ANDROID to the core.. I am using since aug 2014, only thing i regret is camera compared to todays phones but even it lives it up to the mark
well!! it is reliable enough ...
I've had this device since November 2014 and going strong. This device is one of the best purchases I've ever made in terms of a device. Unless I cause damage to it or there are new band support that's needed in the near future, I might actually try to keep this device until end of 2017.
I've really have had no issues with this phone, probably my only real gripe is the lack of OIS support.
You really can't go wrong with the OnePlus One.
Being a phone junkie, I jumped at the chance for a flagship killer, and do not regret it. Looking at all the phones we have today, this one still stacks up great, and outperforms my buddies lg v10 (which was what I was going to get, but couldn't justify the price) in a lot of areas (mostly stupid golf games), though all his hardware is top notch.
This device is affordable, and still runs as smooth as day one. Dev community awesome. I had the slight yellow tinge when it first came out, but it's gone. I had another friend of mine buy the op2 just cause he liked my phone so much but wanted the dual Sim...

I'm looking to jump back in with a OPO after a year, has the touch screen issue been addressed? I had the issue on two OPO's. Very great device otherwise!

That was one of the things I was wondering: there were a lot of people having problems with the touchscreen, they apparently had a firmware fix but I still saw some reports of problems afterwards. Haven't seen any recently, but no real discussion about what was the issue, whether there were some people with hardware problems AND some people with firmware problems or if there were just firmware problems. I think I might have seen something on their forums but I honestly don't trust that place with the reports of censorship and all the fanboys dismissing problems.
EDIT: Just found this thread that describes what causes the issue. Definitely an involved process, but at least it suggests a problem other than just faulty-digitizer roulette. I hate the lengths that Oneplus goes to to try and hide this kind of thing. They could gain a lot more support if they were just transparent about their fumbles and mistakes instead of trying to sweep stuff under the rug and waiting for it to create a scandal.

Yeah, I remember reading about that .. Hoping they fixed the issue as I'm contemplating purchasing one new from OnePlus.
Just wanted to follow-up on my post from yesterday, OP.
I'm now on rooted stock COS12.1 - latest update, as of yesterday night. Only rooted apps I use are AdAway and TiBu (might not justify root tbh haha). But it's still not that great. The phone was definitely much smoother with Sultan's rom, with occasional hiccups. Just tried to do a raid in COC and the phone went unresponsive until I locked the screen but I had to resort to rebooting to make it actually work. It actually froze on the "rebooting" screen and I had to hard reboot.
For reference, I've had the phone since September 2015 and have been holding out for this year's Nexus but I might have to bite the bullet and pick up the 6P. My phone timeline is as follows: LG MyTouch, HTC Sensation 4G, Moto G 1st Gen, Nexus 6 and OnePlus One. Favorites have been Moto G and Nexus 6.
buy opo, leave opx....look around here on developments for both devices and u know why i say opo

Samsung Note 4 Motherboard replacement

Hello everyone, I recently got a great deal off ebay for a Note 4 with like new accessories, but unfortunately the phone was sold not working as it would turn on and a pc won't recognize it. The last known error shown was emmc failure and since i have no wy of testing the motherboard what would be my best option, buying used motherboard or a new one from China? I know that you can only swap out motherboards from the same series, but is there any equivalent motherboard that could work possibly? Any advice would be welcome Thank you all for reading. Cheers
Try Amazon. The part numbers must match.
I don't trust any phone mobo replacements from China unless the phone was made there... even then

Hi Blackhawk, thanks for the reply (as always) There is a sticker I could check on the motherboard that might identify the part number, but what do you think the chances are of finding a new replacement after all these years? I agree that chinese motherboards are of doubtful quality at best, but unfortunately Amazon & Ebay are full of these motherboards and they seem the only ones available. Has anyone here on Xda ever modded another motherboard for this purpose?

You're welcome.
Ufixit is now partnered with Samsung to provide OEM parts to the end users. Wahoo!
The PN# is stamped right on the PCB.

Thanks for the suggestion Blackhawk. Unfortunately all the motherboards are sold out and the N910F model wasn't available. I'll check the motherboard part sticker attached but i'm really doubtful they manufacture the parts anymore. I guess I'll just have to jump in and go with a chinese motherboard. Has anyone here had any experience with one?
I would not use the N910F variant unless a user can verify it would work!
Be patient and what for a reliable vendor to have the OEM replacement.
You could get one on ebay if it has a good imei either as a mobo or complete unit.
In it's day the N4 was outstanding. Consider a N10+, it's the zenith of all Notes. The Beast runs like a bat out of hell and is gorgeous. You lose the 3.5mm jack but get up to 1tb of fast expandable storage. However a new one would be loaded with Android 10, very less likely 9 depending on manufacturer date. Used ones will have 11 or 12; these aren't as desirable in my opinion.
I understand your sentiments exactly. I'm hoping someone can come forward and verify that the motherboards for sale from the chinese vendors are fully functional. The unit I bought from ebay came with four batteries which is what I really needed and since the non working Note 4 was included, repairing it woukd be a real bonus. I did consider the S10+, Note 10+, & Note 9 as possible replacements, but the fact that I can record calls, use the I.R. as a remote ( it's really useful ), native screen mirroring and change batteries really ticks all the boxes for me. I see all these new phones with fragile screens and screen burns and it just puts me off .
You lose the IR blaster, they are cool. Taking out the 3.5 mm was a Note back step.
The N10+'s battery isn't a 30 second job but it's not too bad.
The AMOLED display will put hair on your chest, it's gorgeous and immersive. Works well in no light rooms. I run mine at 30-40% manual brightness normally and avoid going over 50% except briefly if needed. Used as such it will last many years and also greater improves SOT.
True blacks and infinite contrast are beautiful things.
The real kicks are the processor speed and ram.
It's a good balance between processing power and battery life, something that slips away in latter models. The variable refresh rate displays and 5G also eat battery like crazy. Being able to slam a 1tb V30 rated SD card in it though really makes my day. The N9 is noticeably slower in real life use, anything that came after the N10+ is barely noticeably faster.
You'd enjoy the speed, power, a much better UI and the killer display. The spen also be an upgrade is functionality. I use the bt on it as a remote cam shutter release. I went from a S4+ to the N10+, it was a huge learning curve. Kitkat to Pie, oh my... that made my head spin at first.
The N10+ needs to be cased or it will get messed up. Been using the Zizo Bolt case and Gorilla IQ Sheild screen protector for over 2 years now, zero damage. The case makes it much easier to handle and helps prevent accidental side touches. Its sucked up a dozen 1- 4 foot drops onto concrete, face plants and lots of corner hits.
It's a completely different device so not sure how you feel about it. It remains my weapon of choice.

I want to thank you for your considerations Blackhawk. I can understand why the Note10+ is so appealing, and your considerations are really valid and help put the rest about screen damage and phone protection, which is really a major worry for me. My phone has fallen countless times and never sustained structural damage. I also love your ability to expand your storage but the 5G battery drain is a big letdown. Maybe the fact that I can dismantle the phone and mod the software endears me to the Note 4 I found a white sticker under the mainboard, copied both sets of numbers on Google but no part number came out in the search. Also tried scanning the barcode and nothing came out either. Any suggestions for me Blackhawk?

You're welcome. 5G isn't on the Snapdragon variants of the N10+; N975U, N975U1.
Teardown is possible but not near as easy as the N4. Rooting is not possible with the Snapdragon version. The Exynos model can be rooted but has an inferior chipset/heatsink. The SM-N975F/DS is the 5G variant of the Exynos series, the rest are 4G I believe. Rather convoluted
A completely different animal in many ways from the N4.
On newer Samsung's the PN# is imprinted on the boards I believe. Not sure about the N4. That may be a batch number you're looking at. Go by full model number, generally there are two variants "I think" for phones from that era. Poke around doing some Google searches you should find more details. Many are still playing with the N4. Buying a working N4 of the same model would also give you a parts queen and may be your best solution.
Samsung's members forum may have the answers you need including about the Chinese part.

Hello Blackhawk, tried going through The samsung members forum and through two samsung service centers; One wouldn't consider a repair because of the issues that arose for the Note even after replacing the motherboard, while the other salesperson quoted a 295 euro cost, kindly noting that for the price I could buy a new phone altogether. Neither would indicate the model number for the motherboard, one citing "anti-terrorist" motives. Luckily I found a Note 4 with a broken screen and functional motherboard that should arrive in a few days. Keeping my fingers crossed Will update on how it goes. I'm also reflecting that in the near future I might have to consider an upgrade.

I still have my S4+, always liked Kitkat but compared to the N10+ it's painfully slow. The display is usable but that's about it. If you want a to replace the N4 with another Note, you want to go with a N10+ or if you want 5G, the N20U. The N9 is noticeably slower than the N10+. The N20U's form factor sucks. Actual real time speed improves are marginal after the N10+. You want 12gb of ram, not 6 or 8. Any flagship after the N20U isn't a Note and doesn't have expandable storage. Oddly some of the midrange Samsung's do have expandable storage.
Maybe Samsung will get their sorry act together in 2 years. Right now they've haven't done squat for almost 3 years and instead have produced less than desirable flagships in my opinion.
With that in mind I dug in for another 2-3+ years with the N10+. I will likely continue to run on Android 9 and 10 as well. A near zero learning curve also means more playtime with the device instead of dealing with workarounds and forced learning to use a new OS version effectively.

I successfully installed the "new motherboard" on the old Note 4 but it was quite the adventure I took the Note 4 apart and lo & behold, under the hood was a chinese motherboard! wan't very happy about this as the Note 4 was advertised as original but i noticed that the touchscreen attached was not a original samsung part and told the seller so. He was very apologetic and told me he must have been screwed over and it wasn't his intention to be misleading and offered me a refund. I decided to go ahead anyway and install the motherboard and initially the s-pen wouldn,t work, which left me really disappointed & resigned to the fact that the chinese motherboard was defective in some way. After repeatedly assembling and dissamembling the phone, i googled the problem on Youtube and found a wonderful solution by
"Bruno Jeanbruno"; basically you stick a piece of cardboard or whatever under the s-pen connector so the contacts connect perfectly and there you go lol. Now the only thing i have to work out is how to resolve flashing a new recovery as it always reverts to the custom android recovery, even after trying Bryan48765 solution. this truly was a frustrating and amusing experience which highlited that this will probably be the last time I attempt maintanence on the Note 4 as it is really hard to try to find workarounds and such to keep maintaning it, even though it will be hard to give up the removable battery. I really believe that all smartphone companies are just towing the line & don't give a damn anymore on making devices that people can really enjoy.
Yay!
That's why I went with new N10+'s; you know what hardware you're getting and a 1 year warranty from date of purchase. A lot of shady things happening with used devices especially lately. I stay with stock Samsung's for the features, predictability and easier troubleshooting.
The batteries aren't that big a deal. I can do one in about 30 minutes. Literally that's the only repair I made on the oldest N10+. They're built solid and if kept in a good case like the Zizo Bolt will last for many years with heavy usage.
7.9 mm thick with all that processor power and 12gb of ram isn't too shabby at all.
