Note 5, s7 Edge or Note 7? - AT&T Note 7 Questions & Answers

So, I'm due an upgrade. A certain electronics dealer (not sure if it would be against the rules to name them) is running 2 promos: 1) Get a Note 5: get a $250 gift card at time of purchase. 2) Get any of the s7devices (Edge/Note too) and get a free 32" Sammy Smart TV. I don't really need the tv but the mother in law could use it. So, I literally cannot decide which to get. They have pros and cons all around. I'm a trucker, so my concern about the Edge's display is whether the glare along that curve would be annoying or distracting. My wife's s7 hasn't lagged yet, but reviews of both Notes mention lag (precious few reviews of Note 5 after MM update). Most reviews can't call a clear-cut "pick this one." And so, the freebies enter the equation. What do you guys think? I'm sure some of you had the 5. Do you think the 7 is significantly better? That it performs better?

Depends, I have been a note fan for along time. I use the s pen a bunch, and love the 5.7 inch screen size. I would say if you ate a note fan , and use the s pen a lot then go with the note 7. If you don't use the pen the the s7(or edge) would be good. I had the note 5 as my daily phone for a year, it's a solid phone, but the note 7 is better. The IP68 rating is awesome and I take the note 7 everywhere without worry about the weather. The battery performance is soo much better than the note 5 as well. I also was able to get the 256gb SD card for the Note 7 and its been great to be able to have all my music in my phone again. Hope this helps.

Sorry for lateness of reply. I've been testing an s7 Edge and an iPhone 6s+ to see if either is a suitable "upgrade." Can't do the iPhone. It's just too limiting. BUT since the Note 7 is officially done for, is the Note 5 "just as good?" I use the S Pen semi-regularly, but it isn't essential. I can do what I do without it. So I'm down to these 3 phones: s7 Edge which is ok but I'm UNimpressed with its performance. Seriously. I expected better, for some reason. LG v20 which is costly and even the AT&T rep was telling me "I've had literally 10 LG V10s returned in 6 months for manufacturing flaws." I asked her to elaborate and she said "Screen issues. Lines and such." Or the Note 5. If the s7 isn't flawless IMO, then how can a half generation older device be any better? Any input is appreciated.

I think it depends who you ask, and of course what you want to use it for. It isn't a bad device, but to give you an idea, I skipped the Note 5 in favor of my Note 4 at the time because of the removable battery and no SD card. The Note 7 however, was new enough to get me over to the other side and give the "no removable battery" a go (one of the added reasons was also the 256 GB SD card lol).
Right now, my personal options for a new phone are Pixel, V20, S7 Edge or back to my old Note 4 for the time being. And in all honesty, unless I like how the S7 Edge feels within a cover, I'll likely end up with my Note 4 again. I need the space an SD slot can provide me, and well, I'm still kind of hooked to the idea of being able to remove a battery and put a new one in

Like you, I held off on the 5 because of those issues. But I'm not a huge fan of the edges/curves. There's not a case on the market that provides decent protection for it simply due to the design. To make matters worse, Zagg pulled its tempered glass protectors because they weren't staying on. Haven't found one yet that does. Functionally, it's an awful design. It's easily broken. The v20 is an option, but it's really expensive, and I just can't justify that for an LG. They don't deserve it. I've never had luck with LG devices lasting. I'm not even remotely interested in the Pixel, but my Note 4 screen has burn-in. The s7 Edge isn't awful, but I was hoping for more in terms of performance. I may just return this one and get a regular s7.

The closest thing to the note 7 is the note 5.. I'm actually using both of them till I return my note 7..lol

I got the N5 when it came out, i was hesitant about the battery and memory (reason i got the 64gb) but i have had no issues. Im glad i didn't sell it. Its in perfect condition.

Hmm, I think that's a bit the thing. While I have read others saying similar things, I never had any issues with LG Prada that I had when it first came out. I loved that phone at the time.. but granted, it's also the only LG I ever owned so I don't really know for sure how the brand holds up with other models.

I bought an LG TV & Sound plate, and have owned a G2 & Tab 7.0. only the Tab 7 still works. Also, WAAAAY back in the day I had an LG Vu (in the pre-smart phone era). The $200 rebate helps lean me towards it.

There's a rebate on the V20 with ATT? If so, that may just be it for me to get pulled into it.

You have to trade in a paid off smartphone with a minimum value of $5. LOL I'm serious.

Hmm... darnit, I wish I didn't destroy a bunch of old smartphones a few months ago. Unsure if there's anything left besides my trusty Note 4... not really feeling like giving that phone up (plus it will get as much if not more when I sell it second hand).. imagine something like the Note 7 debacle happens again lol

Hmm just quickly checked.. still have to Galaxy S's (the first one)... guess I could get rid of those lol

Hmm it seems I have a few more old phones, but they're all older than the S and unsure if they are all qualified to them as "smartphone", I even still have the LG Prada lol

Att charges 830 for the v20 and T-Mobile charges 750. Att is a rip off.

I agree, ATT is a lot more expensive, not just phones but also with the plans. Sadly it's also the only one (together with Verizon, but I want GSM for my trips to Europe so no chance I go to them) that has decent coverage in my state. T-mobile really lacks when it comes to coverage, their customer service isn't that great either in all honesty. The price is right, I agree, if only they had decent coverage then I could live with it I guess.

This might be good for us.

I am thinking of holding on to the note 7 shut it off and use my one plus 3 until the s8 arrives. Then I will exchange for a s7 edge.

I wanted to hold out with my N7 but when they banned them on flights I figured just switch and deal with it...I went with the s7 edge because it was the closest to the N7...I've had it a few weeks now and it's okay. does most of the things the N7 did...I am unhappy with the screen size and do wish I had the stylus...Battery life is similar..But I do feel like I have gone backwards...
I have been calling ATT cust service and my local store trying to convince them to let me get the upgrade when the N8/S8 comes out but they wont...so I'm unhappy I'm locked into this Next contract with a year old phone..
I read Samsung may be doing upgrade offers to the N8 for N7 owners so there is still hope....
This S7 edge is an okay replacement to get us thru but its not a N7....

You're not necessarily locked into it though.. if you have the Next 12, and if you still have several months to go until the 12 months, you could pay forward to get the upgrade. The rules are pretty much saying that it needs to be paid for 12 months, not that you cannot upgrade for 12 months. Meaning, you pay a few months extra (let's say it comes out in august, you would have to pay 2-3 months extra probably). It isn't a favorable option since the phone you're essentially renting from them becomes more expensive to rent, but I have had it confirmed by an ATT rep that this is indeed possible to do.

Note 4 regrets

Even though, there is no root for the device yet.. Does anyone regret purchasing their note 4?
If we never get root I might....
I've never rooted an android so I really don't know what it's capable of. But I'm very happy with my Note 4
None here!
Love the screen and fast charging - ive got unlimited and hotspot though and I dont pay for the phone or plan, so I'm kind of a shoe-in for being perfectly happy.
I'm neutral. My note 3 was worth $360 when I sold it. I paid full retail, minus $7360, minus the incoming $200 rebate, thus I'm out $200 after taxes and what not. However, I could sell this Note 4 tomorrow for $600, thus I'm holding $400, a $40 increase. So with my math, the phone was free.
Due to that, I don't regret it yet, but I sure do miss root.
if I don't get root, I'll regret and either sell this to downgrade to an s5, or downgrade to an international. both downgrades will cost me a lot out of pocket..

Why not just get the dev version?
I'm starting to regret my note 4 purchase, in fact I'm taking it back Friday, probably gonna go with the LG g3 that's what I was gonna get but was talked out of it. I like the note 4 but why all of this Knox crap. To much security for me, screw you verizon! Smart phones are fun but there actually a tool so be carefull.
A bit, only because of not having root. Having come from a T-Mobile note 2, Really annoyed at how locked down Verizon is.
I just switched from tmobile to Verizon, that was a good move cause verizon coverage and reliability is so much better. When I switched I was planning to buy the note 3 cause it was rootable but no one had it in Stock so I bought the note 4. No regrets at all but I will most likely sell the retail version to get the developer edition if root is not achieved soon.
Only a couple things that bother me because of lack of root, not being able to use Titanium and not being able to replace the God awful current version of Google Maps with version 6. The latter was remedied with the discovery of Waze so for now I am good on that front.
Other than that, nope, I LOVE the Note 4 and am good to go for a while.
I have not even used mine much yet. I got it on launch day, but with no root it's just collecting dust right now.
I'm still on my Note 3 with Jasmine rom most of the time. I'm starting to seriously think of selling off my Note 4 and getting the dev edition.

Well if you're really into custom roms which the note 4 obviously doesn't have then you may have a problem. But i had the g3.. The screen just wasn't up to par, extremely poor brightness (try using it in a well lit room or worst outside) the lag caused by the thermal throttling to keep the display from overheating the phone, it may sound like I'm bashing the g3 I'm not but it's just note good as the note in my opinion. It does have root though so Hey that might be the better choice for you.

Aren't you afraid that you'll open it and it will end up being defective? After 14 days, you're stuck with it. I already had to return one defective phone.
By still having unlimited data makes me want root really badly, but I am sure it will be here sooner or later. One thing I do have a thing about is the home button. Call me OCD, but man... it feels like I am double clicking all the time when I am pressing it. Anyone else having the same problem?

Who's gonna keep using their Note 7?

There's absolutely no other phone I want, so I'm seriously considering not turning my phone in and continuing to use it. Plus I'm not at all happy with the compensation of a $25 credit. What I would deem fair is allowing me to "use" an S7e or ANY phone I want until a suitable replacement phone (S8, Note 8, etc.) becomes available and then turning in the loaner for the better phone. Anyway... anyone else going to chance it and just keep on using their Note 7?

I really like the phone. But, it's not worth risking my life and property for.
Just got my replacement in the mail last Thursday. It's been working just fine. Doesn't get hot or anything with heavy use. I'm going to continue using my revised note 7 till they try to force me to deactivate it
Ive had a rough time getting a replacement, so ive been looking into the pixel xl or just snag a nexus 6p for cheap. Its not worth risking to me.

I'm going to keep mine because I have not had any issues and do not want to get a new phone. This mostly due to how terrible the corporate sprint store near me is. I had to go into the store 3 times to get a replacement.
The only problem (aside from the whole catching fire thing) is I doubt they'll be working on any software updates for the Note 7 now. No Nougut for the Note 7?
Sent from my SM-N930P using Tapatalk
I really wish there were better options out right now I would switch in a heart beat. Unfortunately there's nothing even close out right now or coming out in the next few weeks. If they force us to move on I'll probably go with the v20 or 7 edge.
Sent from my SM-N930P using Tapatalk
I upgraded from a Note 3 to a Note 7. I need a Note with Micro SD card slot. I went on Ebay today and bought the best Note 4 I saw as a backup plan. I still have the original recalled Note 7 and plan to keep it for now. But like kstephens98 said, it won't get updates. And who's gonna wanna continue development here? I think I'll probably use the Note 4 until (hopefully) the Note 8 comes out. I just hope I can still get a full refund if it comes down to that. There's no other new phone out there that I would be interested in.
there is no competition.
i'll hold it until they have another fixed batch or until the Note 8.

As much as this comment exactly describes how i feel i have to return the phone. This is the hsrdest decision. Even harder than returning the first one cause last tine i knew it would be conning back. But it is now giing to be gone forever.
The main reasons are these
1) the phone cost $900. If i keep it i cannot get a new one probably ever.
2) development Will be non existent.
3) no resale value at all in the rare chance i could afford another one.
4) my husband will refuse to let me keep it even if i wanted to ignore 1-3
I was hoping for a new batch but from what I've read Samsung has officially dropped the note 7 all together.
Out the money for my case and have a gear vr which i cannot use. THIS SUCKS

Just an FYI just got this tidbit from Sprint Chat:
"Daniel M:*You can check the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Note 5 with our Telesales team as the device is not available online and we are trying to get it back soon but any date is not confirmed."
was also confirmed by Telesales
If they get the note 5 back, I'd take that. I honestly don't think PHYSICALLY the note 7 is that different. On top of that, the Note 5 is honestly the best alternative. As sad as it is to say that a year old phone is the best alternative...it really, honestly is. I can deal without the USB-C, I can even deal with the lack of SD Card support(I haven't used an SD card in ages as long as there's a 64gb version). The water resistance would be nice...but after owning the S5, it was more.....convenient than anything. The "IF it drops in the water I don't have anything the worry about" feeling. I took underwater pics once just to say I did and could but....not like I'm gonna go swimming with that bad boy in my pocket lol.
Lastly, and most importantly for me, is the S-Pen. Unlike a good number of people, I actually use my....a lot. Which I find either people use it A LOT, or never lol. Anyway, if/when the Note 5 becomes available again, then I'll go back to that. But this Note 7 really was the PERFECT phone.
Water Resistance
S-Pen
AMAZIN screen to body ratio
iris scanner is way more functional than I anticipated
just the right about of edge on the screen
THE SCREEN PERIOD lol
the camera was near flawless in my opinion
everything about this phone......
If only Samsung wouldn't have rushed things. I think this phone would have beat out the iPhone anyway. Thing is, people who buy iPhones, buy iPhones. Getting them to switch is difficult because they're usually invested in apple products. iPads, Macbooks, lightning adapters, etc. People who buy Android phones are usually invested in it. Samsung people usually have Samsung Tablets, enjoy the gmail/google apps integration, enjoy the mass amount of free apps from the app store lol. This makes me want to cry lol
Went ahead and exchanged mine for an S7 Edge. It's a very nice phone too. Plus I didn't use the S-Pen like I thought I would.
In addition, Got two free gifts for my first note and my replacement note and now I've been approved for my S7 Edge. Three gifts, one purchase.
Anyone thinking of trading it in and doing the gift thing, sorry, it ended Oct 9th I believe.

ugh. I am going to call the corp guys tomorrow when I have time to ask what they are going to let me get away with. I am leaning like some others to the LG V20, but since it doesn't come out until the 28th it's outside a 15 day window. Would go without phone/phone payments and a Note 4 I pick up used for now if it meant using my upgrade later.
already sent my old phone back to them, as required to not get charged. So can't go back to that. After thinking about it, the S7 or S7E is a horrible choice since they will be replaced soon and then I'll be pissed I just got an old model.

I am going to keep using mine. There is NOTHING else that is even close to the Note 7. All of us who own the phone knows it is the sweetest one out there. I had considered the LG V20, but I would feel as though I had an inferior phone; judging by the reviews.
The reason I am here today is to root the phone to prevent Samsung from sending some type of kill update.

Where is the Verizon LG V20 forum?

Why is there no Verizon LG V20 section setup yet? Usually these are up before the phone is even released and it is now currently available.
Is there something special about Verizon phones? What applies to one phone seems to apply across all carriers with the exception of the unlockable bootloader the Verizons don't have.

Verizon always makes security changes to the firmware which requires unique methods for modding. This is particularly true for rooting and unlocking methods.

I'm coming from a Note 7 which had root almost on day one. I certainly didn't expect it that fast but it does happen....I'm still pissed about having to return the Note 7. I'm really considering returning the V20 anyway, it feels like junk compared to the Note 7. It's leaving a bad taste in my mouth.
Just boxed it back up to send back, I just can't do it. If the Note 7 is ultimately disabled, I'd rather use an old Note 3 I have than the V20.
Get t-mobile bootloader unlocked ???? =)
I've got the V10 on Verizon ... and I love it. Best phone I've had in a loooong time.
The Verizon store (Chicago) has them in stock (Titan only), in there as they opened and I was the very first visitor to use the phone and spent over an hour toying around with it and here are my thoughts;
1. You CAN block phone numbers FROM THE PHONE! ! ! ! (Can't do that on the V10 - and CallBlock apps will block the ringer, but not VoiceMail.)
2. I was able to delete some of the Verizon Injected Apps - but not all the bloatware.
3. Loads faster, open/closes App's faster - (although the difference is infinitesimal.)
4. Great App access options and customization.
5. Better 2nd Screen --- and MUCH better user options!
6. Look & Feel: It feels a lighter - and it is. The matte finish is "smoothish", and it's fits nicely in the hand - and here is my only concern; I for one hate covers and cases - I buy a thin phone because it's thin and I care for it like it's made of crystal. The V10 has a wonderful back that is quite grippy. But the V20 is a bit too slippery, so when I get it, I'm going to have to put a light-grit application on the back of it.
7. Camera is nice and the easy ability to switch from the regular lens to the wide-angle right on screen is a great touch for the shots I take. The video options are excellent and adjusting what side of the phone the Audio pulls from is great for shooting party shorts or running commentary on a video -- so much better than the V10 version.
8. The screen is sharper, clearer and an overall nicer view --- again, it's negligible, but for my old eyes nicer.
9. Earpiece is a bit louder ... as is the Speaker (which the staff at the store weren't too happy with my testing ;- )
After playing around with it, downloading some of my favorite apps, it's definitely a better phone. Verizon is offering $300 for my V10 trade in, but I'm going to wait for a few to get it, go through it, find out what apps can be deleted, what's locked and if Root is fully available.
Or, if you wonderful guru's can't get it to Root, then I'll buy the Unlocked version from LG and throw my V10 up for sale.
My two phones worth.

The S7 edge compared to the Note 7, the S7 edge feels like straight junk.
V20 does not feel like junk compared to the Note 7. The V20 is a legit phablet phone.
V20 is made entirely of plastic. Everywhere I looked for reviews they talked about the aluminum back but never mentioned that it was heavy and aluminum because it's actually the phones frame. Top and bottom are both cheap feeling plastic, yeah some plastics feels cheaper than others. Ironically the rigid aluminum back is why there's no wireless charging.
I'm on Verizon. I still haven't even purchased the V20 yet because I'm looking to get the US996 up and running. It's just a hunch, but it seems like my best chance of acquiring root on this device (on Verizon). I've also been following the pixel forum and development is rocking over there. Yet, I think the V20 seems WAY better. The way I see it, I can purchase a pixel xl from Google and be assured that I will probably be able to root, but I really want the V20. Either way, I've already accepted that ANY device purchased through Verizon is bound to be locked down to the max. Anyway, just my 2 cents. With regard to the OP, do you think it's better to split up development or work together in 1 unified forum for the V20 on all carriers?

It doesnt feel like cheap plastic. You obviously don't own one or didn't hold the v20.

Yup, Verizon development goes out the door when you purchase a Verizon phone, even the pixel. Google phones purchased from google will always get development, thats the plus side. Google pixel is over priced and I feel its not worth the high price right now.

There is a carrier specific forum for most phones. Many MODs only work on the firmware version they were designed for. Also there will be carrier specific firmware releases and issues. For example the V10 has a specific forum as do all SGNote versions

I was transferring apps from my Note 7 to the V20 so I had both of them in hand, also had the back off while swapping SDcards. At that point I realized the aluminum back was the only decent part of the phone. But this is just my opinion, I'm sure others will think it's a great phone.

I'm coming from 5 note 7th bought the Google pixel XL and consider that a junk phone the LG V 20 right now to me is a pretty awesome phone to box it up and send it back as Beyond Reason.
They have plastic at the top and bottom for the antenna. I personally don't get a feeling of cheap with this device. The N7 was made of cheap glass. Mine slipped out of my pocket and fell literally 3" (i was lying down)and cracked. It sounds to me like you're more upset with the Samsung debacle than anything else. Go get a note 4. That'll hold you until the note 8 comes out.

I agree on the V20 being a premium phoe, but I have to disagree on the S7 Edge, it does not in any way, shape or form feel like "junk" to me.

Who's trading in the V20 for an S8/S8+?

I used my Jump on TMobile to trade in my V20 for a pre-launch S8+. Anyone else going that route?

i plan to order on the 15th or so
Don't think us Verizon folks have that option without paying off the device in full..
nope, not interested in any device with no hifi dac
though the new galaxy looks very nice!
Although the galaxy 8 seems very promising I rather not get into their ecosystem. I'm happy with v20, I'll wait to see what v30 will offer.
Nope. Not going back to horrendous samsung sound, screen burn like you read about and no odin or root likely.
no way in hell.
- bumped the price *higher* than the iPhone
- Samsung made no comment or commitment when it comes to battery life which makes you wonder why they wouldn't
- supposedly the phones are more bloated than ever with Samsung crapware
- runs 1080p out the gate (something that hasn't happened since the s5)
I too will wait for the v30 or note 8 whichever looks better. I'll stick with the v30 if the battery remains removable or I will switch to the note 8 if they go non removable.

Waiting for the V30 also interested in what HTC may have. Still haven't decided yet and I have quite a while as I can't jump till like November anyways. So honestly at this point none of the new devices matter to me as I'm quite happy with my device.
I have no interest in 2:1 aspect ratio.
9:16 or 10:16 is OK.
2:1 is too narrow.

yeah, and that too! :good:
Waterproofing is cool but i would much rather have the removable battery. I use my phone as a tool for work and i have never had luck with just a stock battery. My V20 with the Hyperion extended battery i'm at 50% by the time i get home. i don't have to worry about trying to charge it if i want to go out. My nexus 6p was my only attempt at a non removable battery. Never again unless the battery is 6000mAh+
I would love to - I had a Note 7 and traded in for this pos...but I'm going to wait for the Note 8.
I hate this phone, it barely passes for my daily driver... but its still unfortunately the best alternative right now for various reasons.
I'm continually amazed at how some people like this phone compared to the Pixel or any of the Sammy line.
LOL I had a V10 which I traded for the Note 7 and then another Note 7 and then an S7 edge. I could not wait to get back to LG and I love my V20. It is way better then the Samsung's, can't wait to see what the V30 brings.
I've already placed my JoD preorder for Orchid Gray

But i still dont know why is it so hard to create a device waterproof with removable battery. Samsung itself created one and new the have messed up so much! (talking about the galaxy s5 ). That just proof that it is possible to create a device with removable battery and waterproofing at the same time.
I was really expecting a huge deal with the s8. Kind of another small step. You know its gonna be locked down tight too. Better camera, little faster, still 4 gb ram. I don't see the benefits vs the cost over the v20 or the s7. Bixby? Already been done. There will be 10 phones out this year as good as this. This is just the first.
My jump is from AT&T to T Mobile. AT&T only offered to give me $190 (they had the highest selling price for the V20 of $829.99). What a drop off in price! T mobile offered only $100 per AT&T branded V20 (of which we have 2). We decided to keep our V20s and still go to T mobile (what amonthly savings) to get 2 S8 pluses. Meanwhile we have our AT&T V20s on the T mobile network. The down payment is $130 per S8 plus leading to 24 months at $30 per month to pay the balance.

Wow, TMobile is giving me $600 for a trade-in for the V20. Made it worthwhile to trade-in the V20 to the S8+.
You guys should wait for the Note 8. My speculation is that everything they could have put on the S8 is gonna be saved up for the note 8. Hopefully like dual cameras, fingerprint scanner embedded in the screen, s-pen, etc

What will be your next phone?

With our Note 4 being long in the tooth and less developer support available. What will be your next phone of choice? I am leaning towards the new Note 8, not from a developer's view, but pure performance, if the specs are to be believed.
Difficult to say. I like the note series a lot, but without a removable battery I'm not sold on it.

Which high phone still has a removable battery?
LG V20. Let's see what the V30 is all about.
I'm a little tired of not being able to run AOSP roms without having rando issues BT, WIFI "Samsung phones are not AOSP friendly since I've been on the S3." I think I'm waiting out for the pixel 2.
Im going to have my Note 4 for backup but im going to my non rootable Note 8
unless the Google Pixel 2 is great because root is life but removable batteries can be worked around
I have to stick with a Note. I'm hoping the Exynos Note 8 can be rooted. But, will an Exynos phone even work with Sprint's CDMA? I've always had Sprint phones in the past. When I had to turn in my Note 7 I was actually happy to go back to my Note 4, so I might just hold onto it for a while longer. I'm hoping that Samsung will come out with a Note Classic at some point with today's specs, fingers crossed!
This is my next phone!
Came from Note 3.

With current choices, I'm waiting on Axon 8 on a non CDMA carrier. If Note 5 had more internal memory I might have considered it... last year.
Not holding my breath for a rootable Note 8 in my price range. Samsung ruined it for me with locked bootloaders with no unlock support, bent-fragile-expensive screens and carriers dropping subsidized phone contracts. The Note was a phone I could hold for duration of contract; I might have stayed with Sprint if those hadn't happened but Sprint and Note 4 EOL will end my tenure with both brands and CDMA. No more is my goal unless much changes on all fronts.
Phone UPGRADE will likely mean breaking all former trends. Good run on phones but data was always slow and many considered the Samsung phones as toys; neither weren't serious with data connection. That's the way I often feel while traveling and outdoors on vacation.

I had picked up Note 4 after the Note 5 hit the market. With all of discounts being offered then, I actually was paid a $1 to upgrade from my Note II. So I got two, one for me and one for my wife. I'm sure such deals are a thing of the past.
I was thinking about getting the international version of the Note 8, which may be customized.
Note 8. My Note 4 is dying (emmc errors, freezes, reboots), so I have to replace it with something soon. I'm an S Pen addict, so that doesn't leave me with much choice.
Android has lost its luster for me. Yeah, I can choose launchers, etc., but that novelty has worn off. So if I could wean myself off the S Pen, I might even consider an iPhone.
200 dollars off the pixel XL is tempting.

A Pixel? Seriously? Ewwww... there's no accounting for taste, I guess.
Goodluck running AOSP roms on any samgung device without having some sort of issue. Had APN issues since my S3.
I will continue using my Note 4 until it's guts fall to the floor at which point I will duct tape them back in for one more round. Too many features I love are being removed from ALL the new phones....

I'm having a hard time searching for another phone while my note 4 is still kicking. It's a tie between essential phone and pixel 2. Only time will tell. I want to stay on Sprint and have a phone with a large xda following.
I had a note 4 then it crapped out about a year ago. Had the choice between a note 5 and the S7. Went with the S7 because the note 5 wasn't getting very good reviews then. This was about two weeks before the note 7 release (dodged a bullet?). The S7 is solid but too small. I found a note 4 online for $80, rooted it and am very happy with it. Been looking at the S8 but it's a bit pricey. Will look at the note 8 if it ever comes out but who knows? I like the note 4 so much I went back to it.

Sooo after seeing the Note 8 now
I find myself saying im just going to keep my note 4 until im happy with others phones and getting root lol
plus i removed insurance on my phone because its 13 dollars cheaper and if my phone breaks a new note 4 is like 150 or less on ebay or swappa.
Its like how do you give up free hotspot with many custom options and removable battery
for a high phone thats gonna add much more to your bill total anddd lose root and restricted hotspot for some and no removable battery
I have a new V20 in case my note 4 craps out. No chance I'm buying a phone that is not rootable. I don't care how nice and polished the Note 8 is. Once you start browsing the internet or youtube without an ad blocker its like going back to the dial-up days. Eff that. I don't need a polished turd such as the Note 8 with all "edge" and "bixby" nonsense. The Note 4 is still a very capable phone that has a lot more features than the 8.
