Honor USA Support for devices, Updates. - Honor 5X Guides, News, & Discussion

I know I already posted a thread basically saying that the Honor 5X won't be getting Android 7.x Nougat in the USA, but this is for the USA, I am unaware about other regions. So after having a conversation with a Honor USA representative named David B, my morale and skepticism of the support for the device went up and left me quite re-assured where I was satisfied. Here is the conversation:
David B
Hi there! Thank you for reaching Honor Device USA. How may I be of help today?
Jordan
Hi, I was wondering if the Honor 5X will get the Android 7.0 Nougat update in the future?
David B
Great question!
We get that one a lot.
I believe at this time there are no plans for it.
Jordan
Will it be possible in the future if that is so? Because I was told by another support representative that it will top off at the current 6.0.1 Marshmallow.
And that only the Honor 8 will get it.
David B
I would have to agree with them at this point. We havent gotten any news of an update to 7.0 for the 5x.
I believe the Honor 8 and 6P are getting 7.0.
Jordan
Ah ok, well if that is the case, will the Honor 5X still be support with software updates for the software like the EMUI and android security patches and more things?
Because me along with a lot of others are still stuck on a outdated Android Security patch, which is the May 1st one, and there recently was news that Huawei, the Company that owns Honor, just fired or "downsized" the Honor USA team.
So I'm quite skeptical on if the Honor 5X will be supported anymore, despite your company promising up to 24 months of support for the 2 devices (Honor 5X/8)
Is that true?
David B
That info has not been made available to me. As far as I know, the Honor 5x and 8 are our big guns right now so I cannot see support ending any time soon.
Plus I like my job and hope this isnt true!
Jordan
Ah ok, well, at least that provides me with more positive moral and reinforcement then what I've read from some other news and tech outlets that wrote about this.
I'm just concerned because I haven't gotten any type of software update for my device in well over a few months.
David B
No reason to worry sir. We just moved to a center that is 5 times the size of our old one and the Honor campaign is hiring lots of people.
Jordan
As my last question, I was wondering if the Honor 5X development team is going to release a update for the Honor 5X any time soon?
David B
As far as I know there is a patch in the works but I don't have a time frame for that.
Jordan
Thank you for being very "not vague" and informative today David, I appreciate it. Have a good day.
David B
My pleasure! You are most welcome!
Was there anything else I could do to assist you?
Jordan
No, thank you, have a good day.
David B
At the end of this chat there may be some questions regarding my service. Please answer honestly!
Jordan
I will.

Thanks for contacting Honor and do have an awesome day!
SO IF YOU TL : DRed it, here is basically what this post is mainly about. I checked with some Honor USA support representatives regarding if the Honor 5X (KIW-L24) was going to get Android 7.x Nougat in the future, and one said no, and this one basically said no too, but this representative was very transparent and kind enough to provide additional information on sort of how the situation is going on with the company and the 2 phones and their development so far. So thumps up for this one and the other AND the company for having pretty good customer service despites being a budget phone and a small company of a big one (Huawei>Honor) (Still waiting for KIW-L24 to get updates, still on CUST567D003 and May security patch xD)
Good job to Honor for the good customer support (again x2) and this representative and notifying that support for the device is at least high in priority. Hoping for a new OTA update for the device to include fixes/new features/Android Security Patch soon!!!

That's good indeed honor is doing great

You could have continued on the previous thread itself.... http://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-5x/how-to/probably-7-x-nougat-honor-5x-kiw-l24-t3474350/

Will huawei upgrade it to Marshmallow??

Was wondering if Huawei has announced that they will upgrade Honor 7 to marshmallow. I have never used any Huawei device and am interested in Honor 7 so want to know how is Huawei in terms of SW upgrades etc. Does anyone in here has any experience of previous Huawei devices. I am really keen to know this as ROM development and SW upgrades are probably the most important aspects of a device's future.
Yes all Huawei flagships will get updated, while non flaships will get at lesser priority as well..
But they won't release as quick.. Rather depending on stability of the new android itself the update will delay and they will release it timed with release of their next flagship. So somewhere from January 2016 to May 2016.. That said, since Huawei is manufacturing this year's nexus things might be different.
As Warea said, we'll have the update.
I think google is going to surprise us with this new Android version, doing a global release for a lot of devices on Day 1.
Rumor says that Samsung has already the update ready for S6/S6Edge/Note4, .... And LG too. It's possible that this year, Google worked with manufacturers to make a global release for Android M because one of the things that Apple users are proud of is that every iOS device is updated at the same time with the same version. I think Google wants to fix that with Android.
We'll see !
is possible, but i doubt it, because on every android version, huawei must include emui new version, and they're veeeery slow making updates . honor 6 waiting lollipop yet in european version, and android m launches at end of this month...
no news yet on android 6, but the chinese editions of honor 7 are getting android 5.1 beta tests. http://cn.club.vmall.com/thread-4989272-1-1.html

If you look at last year most of phone brands were quick to announce upgrades to lollipop but they delivered only 2nd quarter of this year, while the few who updated quick were left with lollipop bugs.
I'm in no hurry to android 6 because many of the features are already on emui.. So I rather prefer a properly optimized and bug free update, plus significant changes on emui enough to make it feel like an update.
Honor 6
Let's look at the good, the bad and the horrible worst..
The GOOD -
good built up design and hardware
At good price...
Awesome high end specs
Smooth working never lags
Charges superfast..
It's been a year to own a huawei honor 6 and it's still the same as newly purchased.. Quite happy with the product and fully satisfied And I'm upgrading to honor seven.. Just go for it. N its the best available in the market at this stage
The BAD-
-NO SOFTWARE UPDATES needs some improvements in software but no updates provided in India secondly no OTA updates you need to stress yourself to know how exactly to download and install softwares.
-Delayed updates... We hear Google talking about Marshmallow where as lollipop is on the verge and honor devices still running on kitkat.. Yes, lollipop updates were provided to download and install but manually and bro it's time for marshmallow and we here were dying to receive lollipop (stable) yet..
-Indian versions are not provided with the features available to Chinese versions.. Not 64gb storage available no dual Sim available
-Cloud storage available only in China
For honor 7 I guess marshmallow would be available in next year Q1
The horrible WORST -
It's not at all a loyal brand
I can purely tag Huawei as "use and throw" device because,
-WORST customer service support
If anything happens to the device after purchasing it... You just need to dump it in the garbage bin (service centre) without having a hope of recycle and getting it back so just forget the past and look for a new one..
So if you wanna avoid such circumstances you got to handle with care
Else it works great smooth efficient.. User friendly... Great specs and awesome built..
So if you are a person frequently updating your handset go for it.. But if you are a long term user suggest you to go for some good branded devices..
Just my opinion.. And no offence meant.. Sorryyyy
My newsfeed showed me following page.

don´t know how credible this is and whether it also affects the other H7 versions.

No.... I received one update that was for emui 3.0 that's all and I hear lots of people updating their firmware but they do that manually.. And not OTA update so I get stuck as I didn't know how to do such updates manually..
But honor 7.. Marshmallow beta would be available from Jan I suppose..

What I feel is.. It's pointless in waiting for M update because it's skin emui 3.0 takes it all over the material design and I feel emui is awesome if they keep updating emui..
The lollipop update in honor 6 didn't have much change as the design would remain emui..

Sorry sir It may be nonsense for people having technical knowledge
And I'm sorry but I forgot to mention earlier that all the firmware updates were never officially by Huawei for "h60 L04" model (Indian variant) if you check out the official website of honor India there are no updates but when you check updates for Chinese model then you will find many software updates on their official site for honor 6 but none of them would end with model "h60 L04"
So on that part I told that there are no updates
Honor confirmed on twitter that the Honor 7 will be updated to 6.0 in Q1 2016.
Date not confirmed for the 6+.

PLK-XX is Honor 7 where XX stands for different regional versions. It's the same with P8, the EU version (L01) is not on the list, probably because this list is not intended for European readers!
Marshmallow Will arrive in january 2016.

I've put my name down (via Honor's PR agency), and once you give your IMEI you'll be sent an OTA update automatically once it's ready. I'll let you all know the progress, but believe there will be a requirement NOT to share the code with others so please don't ask me to extract the files and release the ROM.
Of course, I'm sure someone will...

The Honor brand is disappointing..

I'm quoting a user who contacted Honor UK asking about the EMUI 5.1 update

I have been taking to Honor UK on hangouts.
Honor has no plans to release EMUI 5.1 at the MO.
They also said about the promice of updates :
"The "promise" was a Honor US thing. No European countries were part of that."
They also said :
"The Honor 8 is due to get an update soon. As to what's in that again no info."
These are exact copies of what they said.
Will post more when they say more
John
More quotes
"We are committed to updates, we just don't want to be caught out by publishing press releases with timescales in."
"The whole deal with XDA again was a US, neither Honor US or XDA consulted us before announcing the relationship."

I hope that this thread will be noticed by the Huawei/Honor community managers, and that they'll take full responsibility for all the false claims and misleading motto about supporting the Dev community (that includes releasing proper source code) + 2 years updates + XDA partnership.
We need an explanation.
A note to the forum moderators: Please do not remove this thread or censor it as it's our sole way to be noticed by Honor team.
It would be great to have some reply from @Honor UK (Verified), @HonorUSA or @Rox_Honor, but I don't think we will be that lucky...

Yepp, disappointing. My last Honor personally, will move to another brand.
I'm a big fan of the Honor/Huawei camera, its the best out of all brands I've used including Apple, but they need to improve the updates and release the kernel source. For a moment I was close to selling the Honor 8 and getting a OnePlus for a better software experience, but I managed to go jump through hoops to manually update the phone.
I paid $280 for my Honor 8. I have been nothing but happy with it. If you don't like it, move on to something else honestly.

If you got your phone for a good price and you're happy with it, it's good for you. This thread exposes some facts and its aim is to get a "minimal" support from Huawei. So, maybe we'll move to something else 'honestly' in a near future. But many users can't afford it
Don't get it. People are calling some underpaid support guy on the customer level, mostly not really tech avid guys and quite uninformed and than believe what they're saying? Honestly?
There is only one department for outside communication. And you never talk to them. Relax and don't believe what so [email protected] guy is saying you, as they often get informations even later than the customers.

I know what you mean. Though, I like my honor 8 phone but their support is by far the worst . I ask questions in their community forum site and hardly ever get any responds . And, I even wait a few days for an answer, still nothing . To me that's not acceptable . It would be different if I were asking my question here on a non Honor website but my questions are direct to them, unacceptable PERIOD

Lol it's the same even with supposed top brands like Samsung your calling a call center usually from another country that has only been trained to tell you how factory reset your phone from settings or from a button combo. If that doesn't solve it you are usually directed to send your phone back for warranty if it is under warranty or pay to fix your phone. So it's not just honor brand.
Yeah, I like the hardware especially at the price but software support is too poor for me to ever consider Honor again. Too many bugs and too few fixes.
It's the same on every single brand. My last was LG V10. A very pricy device. But no updates, not even security updates in time. I was expecting this for a 650€ device. On the H8 I got Nougat right after I booted it. And it was only 360€. Quite good. I'm disappointed by the closed source policy though. They promised more and that's why i didn't get the bq devices with some kind of Cyanogen on it. Still not sure if it was a wise decision.

I want Security updates once a month.
B360 has the patches from three and a half months ago.
That's...crap, honestly.
I'm not asking for shiny new features and the latest version of Android. Those would be great, but EMUI 5.1's not horribly out of date. Security fixes so my data's not stolen or device ****ed up are kind of important.

Honor 8 Long-Term Update: How's it holding up?

The Honor 8 has been out for about 10 months now and can now be purchased for $299 from the Honor website. So let's see how this phone holds up and if it's still worth the money.
Updates
The Honor 8 was early to the Nougat scene and has been updated regularly. The stock firmware is currently on Android 7.0 with EMUI 5.0. This has the Honor 8 easily keeping up with its competitors when it comes to updates.
Development
There are several regularly updated ROMs for the Honor 8 that will bring you up to Android 7.1.2. This phone can be rooted with SuperSU while running nougat, and the bootloader can be unlocked easily. So as far as development goes, the community has not let us down.
Specs
Seeing as how the Honor 8 is now a $300 phone, the specs hold up just fine and sometimes easily surpass other phones in this price range. The 4GB of RAM is what most flagship phones are launching with today. The 1080p screen is still plenty usable with no complaints from me. The camera has aged well, still being a lot of fun to use with all of the camera modes on this device. The Hisilicon Kirin 950 processor keeps this phone running plenty fast.
Durability
Who else cracked the back of their phone? Other than that, it's still in once piece. Parts are easy to find on ebay and they're very cheap. This is something that I usually look at when buying a new phone.
Accessories
There were never really a great selection of cases to choose from for the Honor 8. Seems there's still a very slim selection or low quality cases for this device.
Overall this phone holds up nicely. I'd say if it were $400 it would be too expensive. $299 seems like a really fair price for this phone to be going at right now. You can usually find it even lower than that on some other websites.
Just give us EMUI 5 KERNEL source code and we'll be happy customers
I'm afraid you'll find many that would argue that development has NOT been great with this device. Still a great phone though...
How much did Honor pay you for this post?
Look at all the threads saying "Huge battery drain after upgrading to EMUI 5." And you'll know where Huawei screw up.

At the risk of piling on to an innocent person, I too thought the OP looked like a press release from Huawei. Interestingly enough, I made a similar post about how the Honor 8 needs a better reputation just a few hours earlier in this same forum. So maybe I'm getting what I asked for? :victory:
Imho the Honor 8 is not a bad phone hardware wise, It's just seems like they spend more on PR than actual development and updates. His statement about updates is laughable at best.

That's someone's opinion but I doubt it's Huawei's official opinion. I'll wait till they announce their intentions.
That will blow if the honor 8 doesn't get Android O. I got another one on sale and have high hopes for this device
Okay, I broke the back glass. Paid $40 to get it repaired.
About the software updates, the US version is doing poorly. Security patches are not delivered monthly. We stayed at a very early patch for a very long time. About the O update, this device should get it. They should at least provide two major Android updates. One was Nougat and the next has to be O.

Only this community of phone nerds cares about monthly security patches. There isn't a company outside of Google that can realistically maintain that level of software support for their entire device portfolio. 2 major OS updates is the most we should realistically expect from Honor or any company. Anything else on top of that is just icing on the cake.
My girlfriend's Huwei P8 receives security patches every two months at least, one just received some days ago with July security patches. So i don't understand why we are not getting them...however, i agree with PuffDaddy_d. I would prefer to have Android O instead monthly security updates

OP5 is currently the sweet spot.

Honor 8 removed from list from interview with CEO

Hi guys.
I earlier posted an interview with Honor CEO George Zhao that the Honor 8 was confirmed to be recieveing the 8.0 Oreo update.
But since then, the Honor 8 has been removed from the devices which Zhao listed who are being updated.
What are your guys thoughts?

It could mean that even he isn't sure which models are actively testing Oreo or they haven't even started testing it. Until it's put through some type of early tests, they can't release any info.
Haha let's start speculation again.
You right.
I am assuming that he is very well aware of what's the Honor plan in near future. On the other hand it might be later found inconvenient for Huawei to let spread the official statement about last year Honor flagships -
Honor 8 and 8 Pro - are about to receive Oreo which might have significant impact on both Huawei and Honor new models sales (like still mentioned Honor 9 and V9). I think they will release official statement (now they surely have to) after Christmas, probably January 2018, about releasing Oreo for those phones in Q1 of 2018. Who knows Honor would then expect the release of OTA about April to May of 2018 practically.
While there is still a small chance that Huawei could even stop the release of the update if they are afraid of new models sales., I don't think they will play that card for good reason - credibility in the eyes of potential customers.
Where is that list, and where did you got this from?

I think that's an excellent argument, it's very possible that their reasoning is a new OS on an older phone will affect sales of a new phone. Wait a few months after the release of your new phone and then push out Oreo to the older phone. The marketing people may be in charge of this theory.

B398 OTA for L09C432 was pushed recently, and
some Croatian users reported B399 started to appear.
B398 includes November security patch.
B399 includes December security patch.
A new one, B401 just appeared on Firmware Finder, I suppose, according to the size, that it is nougat with January security patch.
So, even if I wish there were monthly updates for security, we have security updates.

They do it all the time, after this the FRD-L09 models won't see updates for a while and all the other models will recieve updates. They did this before and I'm pretty sure they'll do it again. I just don't get why Honor doesn't have one universal model number for all regions like OnePlus or Google.

this is why you stop supporting them. i have im just waiting to see what the new Sony phones look like but im just itching to buy a oneplus 5t. i bought 3 1+5s for my family but due to the front facing fingerprint reader i passed.
the 5t seems great aside from the lack of expandable storage so i hope the new Sony phones look good.

The reason I really like this phone is cause I got it on Black Friday last year with a bunch of accessories. The price I got it for was alot lesser than OnePlus at that time and honestly for me the current build is pretty stable for my usage (Teen with bunch of social media, YouTube and games).

sony is great on software in fact its the best due to its large adds a large amount of code to aosp. they use vanilla ui with optimization and if they use a skin its easy to remove thanks to rro.
all oems should follow sony's ui methods. no one likes themes that are hard coded, they just suck! what im hoping is that google bakes security updates into treble so that they can be downloaded through the playstore in the future.
About two weeks ago I sent an Email to the honor support. I asked them about their once made promise to update the honor 8 for at least two years after the release. The answer was that the two years support would only include security updates. They wouldnt give any comment on oreo. I would guess it is rather unlikely that we will get an update to oreo for our device.

Please Honor

Please give further updates for Honor 8 , the processor is capable of many things but you guys are not providing any new updates.
This is the request from every honor8 user.

Seriously?
What is the point of your request?
Of course devs wants to update and fix everything! You can ask (command) Honor all you want, you bought their products. On the other hand, devs here on xda give their time for our pleasure for free so you'll have fix and updates when they can and when they have time for it.
Feel free to contribute to the community by fixing whatever you want and share it here... Or you can wait and be happy when it comes to you.
Sorry but stupid question. First a BETA for Oreo is out right now in China for Honor 8 Chinese variants, second monthly updates are coming very fast, just got yesterday B405 with May Security Patches on FRD-L09 model in Italy. I know this may vary with Countries but sincerely there's nothing to complain.
The first rule is, if you buy a smartphone don't expect anything and that includes updates. Cell phone companies are in the business of selling phones and they could care less about updates. For every person that says they won't buy a phone again because the company lied, there are 10 new customers ready to buy the next model. Be thankful if you get a new update but if you don't, move on because there is nothing you can do about it.
This isn't 2005 when smartphones were getting meaningfully faster every year or whatever it was year it was that a device you have your credit card and bank info on can be wildly insecure months after fixes have been available. If Huawei wants to have a good reputation in the US, where it's been savaged by public officials as "secret Chinese spies", then they could step up with security and keep its devices up to date.
