Head's up! - XT1607 Moto G4 Play uses Micro SIM, not nano Sim. - Moto G4 Play Questions & Answers

Just got a new XT1607 Moto G4 Play for my wife after her HTC One Remix from VZ died and I went to pull the Nano SIM from the HTC and pop it into the XT1607 and, low and behold, the XT1607 uses a Micro SIM, not a nano SIM!
Bummer!
I was able to pull the Micro SIM out of a recently deceased VZ LG G4 and got a great phone support tech at VZ to enable it in the XT1607 and it worked!
Can't believe Moto/Lenovo released a new phone in 2016 with a Micro SIM. WTF? Oh well, you've been warned.

This can be known in advance obviously.
Universal sim kits have a nano in micro, I have lots of them like you can get a free sim from T-Mobile store and just snug your nano in the micro.

I mean, it's kinda right there in the spec sheet and item description like ANYWHERE you can buy the phone. Seems like a pretty hasty purchase if you don't even know what's compatible with it.

Have the adapter from tmobile

Not really sure why they have to make these cards smaller and smaller. My iPhone 6 had a sim tray in that was bigger than the micro sim card yet they say its for size reduction. Oh well, I prefer the micro sim anyway, easier to deal with!

In say the OnePlusX they offer either a 2nd SIM or a SD card in the same slot, a dual SIM tray. Makes sense in some phones.

isnt there adapters in ur country? i have bought 3 for 1 dollar and we arent a first world *****

I noticed that the SIM (nano) with adapter (to micro) is pretty hard to insert, and very hard to take out.
On SIM 1 tray, there is a slider that pulls the SIM out a bit; I couldn't take the card out without it.
But there is no such thing on SIM 2! I didn't try to put a SIM there because I wouldn't be able to take it out...
I am using an adapter like this - Noosy. Did anyone have a different experience, with a different type of adapter (that maybe doesn't make the SIM thicker)?

Listen there is an easy way and a hard way.
The easy way is the "punch out" fitting method where you have some SIM you got from whoever (say a free one from Tmobile) which is the 3:1 type, you punch out the micro SIM to nano SIM shape and place your nano SIM inside so its flush.
The hard way is the "overlayer" method where there is solid plastic on the side not not presenting the gold pins, that is nasty the nano SIM can get stuck easily as the solid plastic forces the nano SIM to protrude. Looking at what you did you picked the harder method.

The ideal method is find something like this

}
You place your nano SIM inside it so its flush both sides, then it slides in+out easily in the slot in the G4P.
You can get this usually as the SIM you got came in a 3:1 type punch-out and this is the middle punch-out.

Which one did you get the no-cut or cut model? Compatibility guide says no-cut model fits but I don't see how it could go in Defy without stripping the metal part from SIM-card slot.
I was looking into this the other day actually and it does seem possible. Check out this picture...

Nice! I was thinking if it is possible to push the adapter from bottomside under the metal part and then push the sim normally in holder and according to the picture it seems possible! Excellent
Yea it looks good.
I've ordered one from the link above that Rhousman posted. I'll let you know how I get on if anyone's interested?
Hi there ... yes it would be great ... so did you ordered not CUT model? Thinking bout the same.
I bought "28th GEN PLUS (3G/2G) DUAL SIM CARD ADAPTER - NO CUT MODEL" from http://www.magic-sim.com/ and it does fit in Defy and it seems to be working.

All working good here. No need to reboot when changing sims or anything like that
tnx. but I did not mean that reboot is needed. So its hot swap?
I didnt get it. In old mobile phones with such adapters the only way to change sims was reboot.
In some DUOS mobile phones two SIMs works in the same time and you can select one or another to call someone and receive calls for both. Also two signal strength bars are displayed.
But how this adapter works with Defy?
Thanx!

I don't know. But, if you're willing to just commit to the N4, you might be able to take the back off and stick the card in the slot permanently. Maybe.
maybe an iPhone one could work?

Good thought, but it doesn't look like it: the outside cover plate is larger on the Apple tray and there's more distance between the outside cover plate and the edge of the SIM card than on the N4 tray.

Oh nevermind then, I haven't receive my nexus 4 yet and the pictures of the Google's tray I found were very unclear.
Did anyone figure this out??
I broke the plastic off of the sim tray by mistake!
I need a new tray
You could try calling LG, they have replacement parts and I'm sure this one isn't the most common replacement so they should have some in stock. 800-243-0000 You could try calling them to see if they have them available.
Anyone have any luck?
I just broke the front plastic bit off of my SIM Tray. It looks horrible.
I can't find anything on eBay.
You all need to be more careful!
But seriously, this is probably something you need to contact LG or Google (not sure who is in control of hardware support) directly, because of the fact that they put the IMEI number for the phone on the tray itself. I doubt this is high demand item at this point in time, so you most likely won't have luck finding one from a third party, and even if you did I'd imagine it'd be very high in price.

Just incase anybody reads this and has a Nexus 4 Sim Tray they would sell - PM me because I am looking for one!
So last night I took my sim out to test tmobile sim I have. Then a friend came over and while I was outside talking it vanished somehow.
So now i cant find my sim or the tray. I'm going to order one, like $8. But crap. Can't believe I lost it. I searched this living room, flipped the couch over.
Maybe the cat ate it. Haha

Edit: So tonight I get the change jar and pour it out on the table. There pops out my extra sim and the tray. Last night I had slid the card in without the tray and it worked just fine. I wasn't without a phone without the tray. Sure was nice to find it. I knew it was in that damn house.

[Q] Micro or Nano Simcard

It could be a mistake. Nano seems to be a placeholder on their website for lots of rumored devices. gsmarena removed what kind of sim they thought the device had and now they don't specify.
PDADB says it's micro-SIM
http://pdadb.net/index.php?m=specs&id=5448&view=1&c=samsung_sm-g900s_galaxy_s5_lte-a
I found this picture in another thread. It looks as if it is MicroSIM but I'm not sure. I would just like to know because I have until Sunday to buy myself a SIM on the deal I want. I know I can chop a micro down but I was worried as nano sims are supposed to be a fraction thinner than microsims and it might not fit properly. I cannot believe we have to have so many different sizes of SIM cards. I guess that's how the cookie crumbles.

I wouldn't jump to conclusions yet. That image only tells you the location of the "microSD" card slot and the "SIM" slot, so 2 slots total, since the sim card is on top of the microSD card. It only says "SIM", no identifier of micro or nano. Also, check out this clip. It says it's a nano. Wait for more sources.

OK to use cut-down SIM card?

I was just glancing at the owner's manual for the Axon 7 that I'm about to buy for my son and noticed a warning that to "avoid damage to the phone" not to use a nanoSIM that's been cut down. Well, I've done this twice already for other phones when I migrated from a micro to a nano and not had any problems (I did make sure to sand the edges a bit, etc.).
Is there any reason to heed this warning, or some reason (such as overall thickness) why I can't just use my cutter for this one as well?
I had same problem, everything is working fine =].
I cut a micro and using it with a sd card as well no problem. 2 sims and sd card
Sent from my ZTE A2017 using Tapatalk
I'm using it just fine
I have tried more cut sim without any issue. I think it is so dangerous as in case of other phones.
Works for me. I just go to a used phone/repair shop and have them do it with a punch tool.
They may charge a few bucks or just do it for free. Easier than dealing with an Exacto knife and SIM card template from the Interweb.
https://www.amazon.com/s/field-keywords=sim+card+punch+tool
I just used my kitchen scissors. I put a nano sim on top of the micro SIM and cut around it. Used nail file to thin it down as i wanted to use the dual sim and sd card. I have dropped the phone a few times and no problem.... Both sims are fine.
Sent from my ZTE A2017 using Tapatalk
The sim I'm using is a cut down and have not had any issues. The sim was originally a full, then cut to micro, then to nano.
Raise your hand, who here is running dual sim + micro sd?
That takes a bit more than just cutting around the edges
I'm running dual sim and micro sd. And all i done was cut around the edge of a nano sim and filed it down with nail file to the metal pretty much. No problems at all even after dropping the phone a few times. Sims or microsd haven't moved

Pic of the sim that is.
Nothing at all like that. I just put the nano sim on top of the micro sim and cut around with sharp scissors. Filed it till it fit with the micro sd card flush with the holder. Metal showed on the sim. Once flush. Just pushed it in... And worked straight away. I've not taken it out since. I'm not sure if i should try just incase.... When i get home I'll have a look

I am also using a sim card cut from micro to nano size. This was my first time trying this and I used a printed out template. They are easy to find.
Does anybody know if using a cut sim card is inferior to a retailer provided sim card? Does it effect reception or anything like that?
I was going to do this another time, but the posts above gave enough encouragement to try it now.
I didn't do any filing, I used a mini torch to heat up the plastic enough to separate the sim from the plastic.
Originally tried with an old microsim I separated. The actual chip portion was too thick, tray would not close.
The freedom pop sim was the closest nano sim I had on my desk which I could afford to sacrifice
Once inserted all the way, the fit relatively snug. Some have put a drop of glue to keep the sim+sd together. I just worked it by hand to keep proper alignment as the tray was inserted. Too bad sprint lte == fail for data.
Swapping sims is a pain to begin with, swapping 2 sims+sd is a bigger pain.

That's not a bad idea... I separated it from the plastic and then used double sided tape. Your idea is interesting cuz you can keep the two pieces separate & the bezels around the chip guarantee a that it fits in the slot. Helps keep the perfect position & keeps it elevated.
Holy carp. They make punch tools. Like, it took a cellphone repair shop 2 seconds to do mine for free

Are the Sim trays from the single sim variant compatible with the duos?

Recently my sim tray got stuck in my phone (G935FD) and upon trying to remove it the tray snapped and the Sim stayed. Needless to say I tried a few measures including using a strip from an old bank card to create space and get it out etc. Nothing worked, I got it professionally taken out and they gave me a new sim tray as well. However the tray is for the regular single sim version. I don't care for the second sim but the issue is now my SD card isn't reading, I've troubleshooted the card and it is in fact good and working. But I'm wondering if its the tray (despite the Sim 1 working fine) or was it a hardware problem when the tray stuck or during repair. Any answers as to if the tray can cause this?
Have you checked if the trays are facing the same side for the SD card on the old and new trays?

I just checked it to be sure and they look identical to me other than the little notch to fit the second Sim. I have a friend with a duos as well. I'll ask to try theirs to verify. I just found it odd because in my previous experiences to damage an sd card reader was tough lol. It may have been damaged at some point during my tinkering or the repair so I'll also ask the repair guy to give it a look again even though I'm uncomfortable with opening up the phone so often. If it's hardware I'll order a replacement depending on the cost and quality. If not I'll just go without an SD.
Looks the same. Yeah, most likely there's damage like a bent connector or something.

Yes, the sim tray from the one sim variant is competible with 2 sims variant,
but it is not as same as together.
1 sim variant can be modded to 2 sims variant, and you should use the 2 sim tray

Only the sim tray can be modded. Meaning you can get a sim tray from 1 sim variant and mod it to be used in 2 sims variant. You can't mod the phone and turn it to 2 sims variant.

Apparently you can on the Exynos variant.
You need to be on Nougat or Marshmallow, I believe Oreo isn't supported yet, and you need a Z3X box or Chimera, and a dual SIM tray.
