Does it have a pressure sensor? - Sony Xperia X Compact Questions & Answers

I'm seriously considering to buy it and while IP68 is not a must have for me, I haven't seen anybody say for certain if this have a pressure sensor and what it reads.

Here is a test which uses just the phone and it's service mode (or any barometer app).
1. dial *#*#7378423#*#*
2. go to "Service Tests"
3. go to "pressure sensor"
4. slightly compress the phone using your thumb and index finger by pressing on the display and back
SLIGHT PRESSURE. No Berserker mode please! This is not a crush-your-phone contest!
--> if all seals are intact the pressure should rise. Your phone with intact seals is a closed system. If you compress the volume the pressure goes up as a result. If any of the seals is compromised pressure will not rise.
Note: pressure will decrease automatically - that might be a result of the sensor adjusting, it will not go back to it's original value until you relieve the pressure.

Anyone with an X Compact in their hands bother to test and share?

RE: Pressure Test
Ran test on my black, UK-edition X Compact.
Test starts at ~990 Millibar, after pressing with fingers reading rises to ~1001 Millibar and quickly returns to ~990.
I ran the same test on my black, UK-edition Z5 Compact.
Test starts at ~990 Millibar, after pressing with fingers reading rises to ~991 Millibar and quickly returns to ~990. So not nearly as drastic of a change.
I ran the same test on my black, US-edition Z3 Compact.
Test starts at ~990 Millibar, after pressing with fingers reading rises to ~991 Millibar and quickly returns to ~990. So pretty similar to the Z5.
All test were done with the phone out of their cases, with all flaps, doors fully closed/secured.

Thank you rvin, from what you say it appears that it should survive a bit of water splash/under rain.

It does more than survive a bit of splash.
I've just made the same pressure test, and it gave 993 before, 1002 Millibar after.
So, since water viscosity > air viscosity, as long as you see the pressure rises
in a similar way when pressed, I'm pretty sure it is fully waterproof.

[DISCUSSION] A thought about the "hinge issue": Possible Solution

Hi.
Just a thought here.
What if you would put magnetic tape on the areas on the picture.
That would take away the loose hinge problem, aint im right.
Then a thought about the magnetic, how will that screw up the gps, compass, the lcd screen or something else.
Anyone have any thoughts?

It would take away the problem. And an accurate compass.
And perhaps the screen.
The only other thing would be velcro. And screw that!
Any other ideas, the compass i can live without...
The screen is just a little harder to live without.
As DanWilson says, maybe very weak velcro will do the trick.
Dont think velcro is a good choice...
very very weak, maybe
I realise that different handsets suffer more or less from the hinge 'problem', mine seems to be fairly average and does open half way if you pick it not touching the bottom half. But for me I have to hold it in such an awkward way that I usually drop it before or when the hinge flops open.
I find that if I hold the phone in a normal grip with thumb on left side and fingers on the right theres no way it can come open no matter what angle you hold it at?
Is the hinge open itself? U cannot write sms/email in bed or it's just a little loose. I do not see how hinge can prevent normal usage of phone.
BTW. It's not a issue it's by design!
I have been saying magnetic tape is the solution for weeks now!
My Z's hinge is fine at the moment so I am not best to try it out but if anyone does please report back, although I cannot see how it won't work.

Well written!
This has to be the biggest non-issue I've ever seen when it comes to cell phone design. I have seen the videos online and I have reproduced the "issue" on my DZ, but as D3LTA9 said earlier, I have to hold it so awkwardly and gingerly that I end up dropping it before the hinge opens.
If your fingers are more than 1/8" wide, you will not hold your phone like this in any real-life, practical operation of the phone.

Was just about the wrte the same.. i have a loose "hinge" but no problem..
so i ask "What Hinge Issue ???"
This was born out of people expecting something from the phone that it was not designed to do, with the way the hinge is designed it is always going to fall back on itself in certain situations, it doesn't lock into place and is not meant to.
Sure some are looser than others but its still not an issue, if you don't like it don't moan and try a replacement you need a different phone, get a milestone 2 or something.
Well, got my Z. Yes, it's loose, but I don't care, because opening and closing is very good and I don't use my phone like that, that keyboard would drop...
I'm sure mine is faulty, it just doesn't stay open when I'm trying to txt whilst doing a headstand!!
No,... seriously, mine is loose, doesn't take much effort to open or close, and it does shut itself if I open it and try to hold it face down horizontal... but I never need to use it in that position. Even in bed, if I'm lying on my back, there is always at least a 90 degree angle, maybe upto 140 degrees as the viewing angles are so nice.
My personal preference,... I would like it slight little bit tighter,... but saying that, then I wouldn't be able to open it with one finger???.... so actually,.... as it is is fine.
Sent from my HTC Vision using XDA App
Has anyone here done the "magnetic tape" trick to fix their loose hinge? Mine is starting to get loose, but I don't think it's much of a problem even though I keep opening/closing it to see how loose it might be.
This was actually discussed and attempted sometime ago. The guy who did it said it worked great and he didn't have any issues with the compass/GPS. As far as I know, he was the only one who tried though (before the thread got locked due to immature and off-topic posts). Some pics of his mod are on this page:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=802202&page=3
There is a video demonstrating its effectiveness on the page after.
Another solution is actually taking the hinge apart and messing with the spring inside. This has been successful for a lot of people (myself included).

this only works with a pressure sensor (barometer) - does the Z2 have one?

yes z2 have pressure/barometer sensor.
then you can use this test for Z2 as well
It works. Pressure rise when pressure applied with closed flaps.
Once I open a flap and again apply pressure then nothing happens. Pressure stays the same. So, mine is waterproof. Yeeey
I tested,
start value: 1009
compress and hold: rise to 1020 and back to 1009.
release: fall to 1005 and back to 1009
It looks like mine has fault?

I get the same reading. it starts at 1014 and goes all the way up to 1022 when i touch it with my thumb, but it automatically goes back almost instantly with my finger stilll pressuring on the screen. If i open the flaps, then the sensor's reading wont change. I'm clueless!
Excellent! Thanks for the tip! Everything is perfect with my device!

It means it's working cause pressure gets stabilized
Same here pressure equalizes after a second. So its not really tight?

That's what I wondered, if the pressure goes back to normal that means it's escaping somewhere? Unless it's stretching somewhere else in the phone I guess? But mine does the same, pressure increases then normalises, then drops lower when you let go before returning to the original value. So that means it's water tight?
wow never realized Z2 have this sensor
i remember my Z1 didn't have one, it just said "This feature is not supported"
For me, too, the pressure rises, then falls back to the original pressure. Then if I let go, the pressure falls, then rises back to the original pressure.
However, this is not a meaningful test, although it gives at least a vague indication. The seals are not intended to stop the phone being able to equalize atmospheric pressure with the outside world, they're designed to stop water coming in. Most likely, when the phone is squeezed the increase in pressure pushes the seals out just ever so slightly, leaving a gap through which pressure can slowly correct itself.
A slightly more meaningful test would be to compress the phone with the doors open, then seal the doors with the phone still pressed, and then let go so that the first thing you're doing is creating negative pressure in the phone, not positive pressure.
well maybe thats not a proof ... i bought this device a week ago and from day one i submerged it three times into water to test is it really waterproof or not and yes it has done the job ...
but just trying that pressure test in normal atmosphere it equalizes after a second
while underwater i tested and the pressure increases but doesn't equalize.. so thats the point of waterproofing..
its not air proof !!
hope that could be useful for anyone ... just don't panic if in normal air atmosphere the pressure goes back to normal
My pressure just stayed at 1005. I pressed the screen and I pressed the back nothing changed I think it's because I changed the back plate recently...

A friendly warning about the waterproofness of the Z3C

Hi guys,
These forums has helped me a lot so here I am trying to give something back. So here's what happened.
I have just received my Z3C from the Sony service centre as the waterproofness of this phone is sadly, not that reliable. I went swimming in a river with this phone while taking pictures and shooting videos, and the next thing I know. Bam, the screen goes dark and the phone was dead. I did not submerge it for a long period of time either. I took underwater videos for around 2-3 minutes and I resurface it again. It worked flawlessly for the first 2 videos but the third time is really not the charm. I thought the battery was dead at first but later that night when i tried to charge it, i saw water vapours inside the lens and that was when I realised the horror that I am in.
I did secure the two flaps many times before diving into the water so its not an issue of carelessness. The incident also happened after 1 and a half months after I owned the phone so I don't think the integrity of the rubber flaps would have been compromised by constant opening and closing for charging by then. If it is, then it is another thing that we should be worried about.
What I think happened was the current in the river (although not strong) might have had an effect on the integrity of the rubber flaps and caused the leak. I have submerged my Z3C in the bath tub a couple of times before and it was fine. However, the currents of the river might not be that forgiving towards the phone. THEREFORE, I urge caution towards my fellow Z3C users when taking it towards watery places as you might taste the same tears of disappointment just as I had.
Don't get me wrong, the phone is awesome, and I still love it very much, but lets just say that I will not be putting it even near a glass of water next time around. Hope this post can help save a few people from suffering the same fate as I am in the future.
Thank You.
Curious if you're going to make a warranty claim. The waterproof feature is a Catch-22: there's no way to substantiate the user's claim that the flaps were all properly sealed, so Sony will say that water intrusion was due to carelessness.
I washed my phone under tap and screen went after 20 min black.
Then I vacuumed the hell out of it, both flaps open, one connected to the vacuum cleaner.
Flap markers were white btw.
After vacuuming screen was alive again, but digitizer was dead.
Warranty service accepted the phone, no problem with that, but they couldn't fix it.
At first after the screen change, the vol up didn't work.
So I sent it back, when I got it mic didn't work: my calls had noise and voice wasn't audible, plus other party got his own echo back. Without noise supression It was usable.
Sent it back, but after returning mic was still broken, vibrator didn't work and pressure test showed only +-1mbar (it should be about +-10mbar) so it wasn't waterproof anymore.
I made a complaint and got a new phone.
All that back and forth took about 6 weeks.
This is just bad luck. You have a faulty unit. Mine is working fine after some movies into the pool, soda spilled all over it, etc. Thanks for the friendly warning
waterPOOF
A friendly reminder:
Just don't use the phone on any type of water, though it can survive on the rain but as far as i concern, i don't trust the waterproof/water resist of xperia. Don't also use water to cooloff your phone if it overheats. Remove any protective case and cool it down for a minute.
For more protection, you can look for a waterproof pouch with double zip lock if you want to use the phone in watery place. I always use that kind of pouch and i can still shoot nice photos.
Some Info regarding Waterproof and Water Resistant [HERE]
hey,
i got my phone when it came out and washed it every other week with tap water. last week it suddenly turned itself off 20 minutes after i washed it. it kept turning off with three vibrations. after a day i could start it again. two days later the touchscreen didn't work in the center stripe. i sent it in and got a new phone after 3 days. just setting it up right now
i'm disappointed but also happy. anyway, just ordering two new phones for my family which makes it #3 and 4.
so yes, it's not perfectly water proof, but the service was ok (after 3 calls).
cheers,

Oh wow, to think that someone had actually suffered the same fate as I am. For the warranty claim, I did sent it back for repairs but after I got back, it just came back with more problems. As a result I had to send and resend the phone for a total of 3 times. In the end, I also requested a new phone and they did agree to it (After countless phone calls and arguments). However, the overall process took me over 4 months (no kidding) and god knows how I feel during that time. Not every country's Sony service centre was excellent and mine was particularly bad. Still, I'm glad you could get a new one for your troubles as well .
People,
I have an old z3c, second hand, with back cover replaced by my self and a shabby flap.
Trust me, I am a perfect unconscious without care for his own things.
This to say that I'm used to clean my phone under tap water, and during these holidays, I make some videos under river and waterfall, and also a lot of photo and video under the sea!
Yes, I'm unconscious and luky, but just to say that not all z3c are defective in waterproof
When a phone or anything says ''water proof'' to me that means ''Slightly better than water resistant''
I dont ever intend to submerge my Z3C in water. To me it just adds a little bit of peace of mind when it comes to spills or accidental submersion and a quick pull out of water.

Why wash it every week? haha..
I also met this problem last week. It was not really water-proof.
I only washed it for 30 seconds and the screen went dead. I send it to the support to repair it, after they check it they found it is impossible to repair. Hopeful they send me a new one back. I swear this time I will never trust its water proof.
One thing i have noticed about the seals under the flaps. They need to be carefully cleaned BEFORE you close up the flap. Not a problem for the one over the SIM card as its rare to open this.
Major issue i think for the one over the USB port. I have usually found that after opening there are "bits" in there where they can interfere with the seal. They accumulate on the phone and case in normal use, and then drop in when you open the flap.
I use a magnetic charger and really only use the USB for large file transfers from or to the PC, and under my PC screen i have a good quality paintbrush and i check to make sure no hairs get left behind.
The seal just slides in much like a lot of "tough" cameras. Pressing the flap in hard makes no difference. The seal and mating surface must be clean and smooth.
Enough!!!
I have read so many different posts about this phone not being waterproof and it really has to stop!
I have had my Sony Xperia Z3 Compact since november last year and I have no idea about how many times it has been under water...
This phone is sold to be waterproof!
There are countless of commercials from Sony showing the phone used under water!
If the phone gets damaged because it has been under water it is a warranty issue (if you have not closed the flaps... ) because you have a faulty unit - they do exist you know, but that does not mean that all Z3C are faulty...
You can use this phone down to 1,5 meters depth for 30 minutes without being afraid of anything - the phone is WATERPROOF...

The fact that you have read countless post about this phone being not waterproof just proved my point. I did not post this just so I can diss the Z3C. It is a great phone and I have submerged and wash it under the tap water before and it worked fine. But with time (1 moth and a half) that is not so anymore. However, the purpose of this post is only to serve as a friendly WARNING for fellow Z3C users. If you have read my post and you still feel confident about its waterproofness when some commercial tells you so, then by all means submerge it as you please. I'm just here to exercise caution as I do not want others to suffer the same fate as I did. When your phone is breached by water, and your screen goes completely dark, dead and the warranty no longer covers it....Well, I hope you are a rich person :fingers-crossed:

Well my point is that there are many threads (not countless... ) about this phone not being waterproof and that is just WRONG!
This phone is build to be waterproof, it is commercialized to be waterproof (and yes!!! when Sony focuses that much on how you can use this phone under water then you should also expect the phone to actually be waterproof...) and it is sold to be waterproof...
As long as the flaps are closed properly it is waterproof!
Every post about the phone not being waterproof is a warranty issue because it's a faulty unit.
It's very nice of you to come with this friendly warning but it's almost the same as saying to people, that they should not drive around on their bicycle because they might risk to get a puncture...
So far my phone has been under water many times - also in rivers with strong water - and there hasn't been any problems what so ever and if it should ever come to the day, that my phone breaks due to this usage then it will be a warranty issue because the phone is supposed to be waterproof... :good:

The problem is imo in the rear glass or screen sealing which starts leaking over time.
Markers under the flaps were white when my phone died after washing under the tap.

Well, so much for SONY standing behind the waterproof claim:
http://www.xperiablog.net/2015/09/10/sony-changes-stance-on-waterproof-phones-do-not-use-underwater/
This is technically the right thing for Sony to do, but it sure is complete BS that they wait until after they sell millions of these under false pretenses.

Well I will still continue using my phone under water... Sony sold this phone to be waterproof and just because a tech site brings an article about problems it doesn't mean that the normal user should have heard about it...

I agree, but the tech site is doing what Sony isn't, and that's being transparent with this new info. Song is basically making changes to its warranty and support policy without informing the customer. If something does happen to our phones, then Sony will say it's not covered because of this fine print.
If HTC ever makes another compact flagship, Sony would lose me as a customer.
Sent from my D5803 using XDA Free mobile app
well, add me to the list of people who lost their phone to water damage.
I made the pressure test before entering in a small lake and it all looked alright. after taking some pictures the screen started switching itself on and off.. I immediately switched the phone off, took out the memory and sim cards, left the flaps open and put in in a dry place. Once I got home I put it in a bowl of rice (which is supposed to absorb the remaining humidity) but after a night it still wouldn't switch on.
I have used the phone under water on several occasions before, so it's not that it was faulty from the beginning. What I noticed is that on the inside of the flaps there is a small rubber sealing, which came off almost by itself when I opened the flap to get the water out.. I guess that could be the issue.
Farewell to the z3c forums, I won't spend another 400 bucks on a z3c so for the time being, I'll revert my old s4 mini..

Check waterproof without putting phone in water - Compare numbers

Hi
As far as im aware, by looking at the pressure sensor, you can see if the phone is waterproof, but I don't know how much it should change.
Mine is going from 1004,7-1005,3. Could anyone download cpu-z and look at the barometer pressure sensor and see how much their number change?
Thanks in advance
Well, no offence but, that doesn't make any sense.
The pressure will vary depending where you live, how higher are you from the coast. So, people just telling their barometer pressure tells you nothing aside of how high above sea level they live.
Secondly, they take into account that waterproof barometers have different sensitivity so they calibrate it accordingly so the readings are precise. You won't see any difference between the reading on your sg7 and a sg6.
Lastly, the only way to know for sure your device is waterproof is do a dive test. Drop it in a glass of water and leave it there for 15 minutes. Tah-dah!
You're supposed to push lightly on the screen and make sure the pressure goes up directly when you press it and slowly go back down. Mine goes up by 0.3 mBars immediately then slowly goes back down even when I continue pressing
It's a good litmus test but of course not guaranteed. I use Sensor Box

Well, no offence but, that doesn't make any sense.
The pressure will vary depending where you live, how higher are you from the coast. So, people just telling their barometer pressure tells you nothing aside of how high above sea level they live.

Not asking for their numbers, but how much they should change. My Xperia Z3 changed my a few hundred and after broken glass by zero, which proved it was not waterproof anymore. So is asking to see if anyone's is changing by a few hundred by pressing or if the 1-2 mine change is enough.
When it's waterproof the pressure will rise, as air can't escape, so pretty sure it proves.
Hi,
my sensor shows 956,0. When I press front and back it goes to 957,3 and then slowly back (still under press) to 956. When I release my phone it goes to 954,8 and then to 956.
If I try it with SIM tray out, pressure remain same with no change.

Thanks. Was exactlyexactly the answer I was looking for. So if your phone is waterproof, mine should be too. Just wanted to be sure, if most people had as little change in numbers as me, as om my Z3 the pressure raised a lot more.

If you didn't notice I gave you numbers in my post, and also verified water submersion.

A thanks button to you too ?

Damage from exercising with device in pocket.

LG G5 *Note Verizon acknowledged this was indeed an issue!
I wanted to mention something quickly to perhaps save others heartbreak.
I run and use the eleptical for extended periods of time. Mind you, My pockets are not wet but perhaps damp After an hour or more. I took my phone out and made sure I was not drowning. To my surprise the phone was dry except a small amount of moisture near the rear finger sensor.
It seemed nothing of concern. After exercising was completed, the fingerprint sensor was non responsive and intermittent. I got home, looked at the device, it was acting erratic. Screen was turning on and off as if someone was pressing the sensor 50 times a second, battery got very hot (not note 7 hot).
I could no longer power down phone, pulled battery. When battery was inserted phone booted but back button was no use, can't power down, turn off screen.
I read somewhere, don't quote me. Exercise creates a barrier of 2 inches of 80% moisture barrier when doing hard cardio.
Too lazy to find article, not good at story time.
Fix: 5.00 waterproof pouch with lanyard.
The best!
Thank you so much for taking your time writing this! I'll thank that to my attention as someone who lives in an extremely humid area in terms of, my sweat never dries unless i wipe it on a different object, and since the sweat wouldn't evaporate, it will build up and can reach situations where it's dropping off my forehead when i stare down the ground, so my clothes could get extremely wet when I sweat, never thought about it harming the phone, preheps since I don't really exercise.
But sure as hell gonna keep that in mind when it comes to heavy duty!

Hello,
I just had something similar happen with my LG G5.
I got hot & sweaty picking berries, with phone tucked in my bra. The phone seemed fine at the time, but within an hour of finishing, the phone stopped working. The water damage indicator is fine, as if no water damage. But unable to use the screen or back power button.
Is the phone just trash now?
It's been 3 hours of letting it sit with the battery removed, and still no improvement.
Thank you for your help.
