Using 4G causes No Service (Dual SIM) - Moto G4 Plus Questions & Answers

Is anyone having their phone service (calls and data) drop when using 4G?
I have tried every combination of 3 SIM on different networks (O2, EE and Three), each one in each slot, each pair in both slots; when limited to 3G all SIMs work fine and have full, stable connections. Every time I set either SIM slot it be 4G preferred, phone and data for that SIM will drop every few minutes. Before the update I got a "no service" notification, now the bars show as empty. Before the update the connection would come back, go back to 4G, and then drop out again after a short time; after the update the signal comes back but the connection often stays at 3G (and data + phone stay fully connected.)
I have tried this at two locations 10 miles apart, and a few stops in between.
Is my handset broken, or is this software related and all similar users have the same problem?

Could be that your location has a weaker 4G signal or that you have LTE ONLY mode on in another setting/module.
I have had no issues with 4G connectivity, and that's likely because I have a strong reception at my location.
If you haven't already, I'd suggest checking details of your connection through a 3rd party app such as LTE Discovery (available on playstore). Though Googling for LTE Bands supported on XT1643 brings up several mentions of it supporting 5 bands (including the faster 2300MHz band 40) while checking the inbuilt Motorola program menu LTE settings, I found only four listed, 1,3,5,8, which I haven't yet probed on. Going by my ul/dl which maxes out at 6/17 megs, and my carrier offering bands 3,5&40, it looks like I am one of the first two.
Another option could be using the OpenSignal app and checking for how you measure for different protocols, signal reception and latency, all of which are decisive in how your phone goes about switching and selecting network. As for the compatibility, Moto G4+'s Snapdragon 617 SoC has LTE support baked in, as has been the case for past several Qualcomm chips. So unless, all factors such as network settings, signal strength and carrier configuration have been tested to be optimum, it doesn't look like this is a device related issue.

Thank you for replying, it seems like you misunderstood me, I'm not talking about the data connection, I'm talking about the standard signal.
Even in 4G preferred mode it will scale down to 3G, so it's not the data signal that's at question, why would the standard phone signal drop or completely go ("no service") i.e. no calls, only when 4G preferred is selected?

[Q] Force Galaxy S4 to perform handover to 4G.

Background: I am operating a private lab system that emits 3G (UMTS) and 4G (LTE). The hardware uses the Radisys stack for both 3G and 4G radios so its got industry standard layer 3 signalling, however the neighbor lists and paths on the backend between the 4G (SGW) and 3G (SGSN) to perform a proper handover have not been implemented so I'm looking for a way to force the phones to perform their own pseudo handover (hard handover) anytime they detect the LTE signal present no matter how faint it may be in relation to the 3G carrier.
I can get the phones onto LTE manually by either going into *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE only, or by shutting off the UMTS basestation and effectively forcing the phones out of UMTS coverage. The problem arises when both 3G and 4G carriers are in simultaneous operation. With the phones set to prefer LTE and the radio set to GSM/LTE (Auto PRL), upon initial power-up the phones will default to LTE. If the phone does not default to 4G, I can force it over by going into *#*#4636#*#* and selecting LTE only. However, anytime a call is made and after the phones perform their circuit switched fallback to 3G, they ultimately will attach to HSPA and remain there unless I manually force them back over to LTE even after the call has ended.
Granted this is a network configuration problem as I previously mentioned, the paths and neighbor lists for 3G <--> 4G handovers is not yet there and I'm currently working with the equipment vendors to have this functionality implemented but in the meantime, I'm looking for an app/hack/hidden developer option/etc... to force the phones to reselect LTE no matter what. Currently various Cyanogenmod ROMS/Factory ROMS/Rooted ROMS + various modem/baseband combo's + Mobile networks set to "Prefer LTE" is not getting the job done.

OnePlus Two - HSPA+ and 3G Data Connection Problem

Hi Everyone,
I'm usually just a reader on XDA, but I have found a problem that appears not to have been solved and wondered if anyone had any insight.
Problem Summary
When in an area (or network) with only HSPA and UMTS (strong HSPA/UMTS signal, but with no LTE or 2G available), the phone will drop from H+ to 3G erratically, always dropping the data connection. Traditional phone calls are not affected.
Detailed Description
I have a OnePlus Two and have 2 SIM cards. My first SIM Card is with Bell Canada (Virgin), and the second SIM Card is with WIND Mobile Canada.
Neither Bell nor WIND operate a 2G network, so the lowest the service can fall to is UMTS/3G.
Initially, I didn't notice the problem because Bell also operates an LTE network, and there is no problem with dropping the data connections when on LTE.
When I switched to the WIND SIM card (which only operates HSPA and UMTS), I noticed a problem where the phone would initially connect to H+, begin downloading whatever is needed (say, streaming music), but then part way through the download, the connection would switch to 3G, and the data would effectively stop. Within a minute, the service would jump back to H+ and download some more, but this cycle would continue (H+ --> 3G --> H+ --> 3G... ), with no way of knowing 1) how long the H+ connection would last before dropping to 3G (usually less than 30 seconds), and 2) after dropping to 3G, how long before going back to H+. This problem makes the phone almost useless when there is no LTE.
The most obvious troubleshooting I did was move to locations of better signal but I quickly ruled that out, as nothing seems to remove this problem. Other things I tried was to: move locations in the city, reboot phone, hard reset phone, flash most updated version of Oxygen, unlock bootloader, root, try the HSPA Keepalive app, swap SIM1 to SIM2, and many other things.
I originally thought this was a network issue, but I put this WIND SIM in another phone and there was no problem in any way that resembled this problem.
I also ruled out this being a network-specific problem, as I have taken a trip with the Bell SIM to an area where Bell does not have any LTE coverage (only HSPA and UMTS) and the same problem occurs on Bell as with the WIND SIM.
I have found people who had this problem on the OnePlus One tend to recommend using 2G to stabilize the connection, but this is not possible on Bell or WIND. That solution also would not provide adequate data speeds.
Remember this problem only affects data connectivity, as 3G traditional phone calls have no problems.
Question
Does anyone know if there is a way to adjust the conditions when the OnePlus Two will choose to switch from H+ to 3G?
Does anyone have any easier suggestions?

I believe your problem is that phone it's dualsim standby, that means only one modem that alternates signal for both sims, I think normal would be alternating from faster network to slower network on sim without data.
Having to change to g3 between sims theres something stoped in the modem and data connection is also stopped.
You have no problem with voice calls because other sim is automatically turned off and unreachable.
There's nothing you can do if you're forced to only 3g on both sims
By 3g I mean 3g or h+ which to my knowledge are the same

Thanks, I will try disabling the second SIM to see if there is a bug with the dual-sim...
What it currently does with the second SIM is it either shows "R" for roaming or just emergency only, but perhaps there is a software issue so I'll see if disabling the second SIM makes a difference.

Though strange, this workaround fixes the issue. Thank you to fburgos for the suggestion!
So just in case anyone ever finds this issue creeps up on them, the solution is to DISABLE the SIM you are not using. It's not the most convenient workaround to swap SIMs, but the other SIM will be in Emergency Mode, so it really makes no functional difference.
On the technical side, it does appear that there is actually a bug in Android for a very uncommon network configuration. It will only appear in this exact configuration:
SIM1: Network has HSPA/3G only, no LTE or 2G to move to
SIM2: Network also only has HSPA/3G with no LTE or 2G
The non-data SIM does NOT connect to a roaming network (connects with "Emergency Only") - if it connects to a roaming 2G network, this problem does not happen.
The data SIM connects to HSPA/3G
Both SIMs are active
I'm not sure if this will happen anywhere else in the world other than having a WIND Mobile Canada SIM and Bell or TELUS Canada SIM
If anyone has insight on how to report this to Google, or someone else who can confirm my theory, that would be great!
Try this:
1. You need to make sure you have the correct LTE APN selected in mobile networks and LTE as preferred type.
2. Go to dialer and type in this: *#*#4636#*#*
3. Phone Information
4. Set Preferred Network Type to: LTE/GSM (PRL) - you an play with which one you wanna use but the one I said works for sure. on other roms I have" TD-SCDMA, GSM/WCDMA and LTE"
5. Now click TURN OFF RADIO and wait WAIT few secs. will that button turns to Turn Radio ON
6. Now TURN ON RADIO and wait
7. when u see the triangle for the signal is back, at least black , go down and lick SMSC REFRESH then UPDATE.
8. now just go back to APN settings and go into your LTE APN
9. Change Bearer to LTE

I use only one SIM card so it is not a problem two cards.

compared with my htc butterfly 2 and another low-end android, one plus 2 running latest Oxygen OS has serious connectivity issues. I compared the signals strength using same sim card in same location (including being connected to the same tower) and One Plus 2 keeps dropping the connection and has really poor signal strength. I have tried the *#*#4636#*#* and tried different network modes, but none of them are helping. Its a real disappointment that the basic feature of this phone is screwed up.
I have tried with CM13 as well. Any ideas if this is a modem version issue?

Signal problem theory/research

Hello, i live in a relatively small town where my service provider has very poor 4G signal. but pretty good 3G signal. With the Axon 7 i have a lot of signal problems that i didnt have with any of my previous phones, where outdoor signal is pretty bad and indoor signal is almost unusable. It also connects almost exclusively to 4G, and in contrast all of my previous phones connected almost exclusively to 3G. Over the last weekend i traveled to a major city where my service provider has very strong 4G signal, and the signal problem was almost non existant. I even had signal in places where other people with the same service provider did not. So my theory is the following, assuming that the hardware (antenna) used for 4G and 3G is the same, it may not be a hardware problem, but a problem with the software having a hard time knowing which band/signal it should connect to. It seems that in my case it prioritizes 4G signal and the cost of a VERY unstable cellphone service. This is also assosiated with the fact that when it connects to 3G (incredibly rare), the phone goes inmediately from 1/2 bars to 4/5 bars. I also changed the SIM configuration to leave LTE out, but either for a visual bug or a software bug, it keeps connecting only to 4G. So could this be the problem that me and a lot of people in low 4G signal zones are having? Is there anyway i can force the phone to connect exclusivly to the 3G signal to test if that is indeed the problem?

Without knowing which model Axon 7 you are using, where you are using it, and who your provider is, there is little anyone can do to help you. All I can say is that it helped me A LOT to go into settings and turn off
VoLTE.

U model last update, using it from Argentina, and the provider is Claro. I have LTE disabled in SIM confg as i already said and VoLTE turn of as well but the phone keeps connecting to 4G no matter what i do, even if i configure it to only GSM
I don't think its a matter of position or provider (version could be if different software is provided), but a general issue with the phone and band/signal interpretation coupled with the apparent innability to go off 4G

ok when it connects to LTE it says "4G LTE". The 4G that you are getting is probably HSPA or something. And we had someone on here a few months back using Claro in Argentina and they had to seek answers from their Claro

If "4G LTE" is 4G and "4G" is HSPA, when only a "G" appears, what band am i connecting too? Its still pretty weird that im having major signal issues in my town, but when i go to a big city my signal is even better than other phones, it seems inconsistent with the whole "bad hardware" theory. I talked to Claro and it seemed like from their end it was a non issue, can you point me to the thread to see if he got it fixed somehow?

E is for 2G+
3G is 3G
H is 3G+
H+ is 3G++ (an intermediary protocol up to 42MBps)
4G is LTE (up to 150Mbps in the EU most of the time)
4G+ is LTE-A (which is available in most of the EU, SK & JP) - up to 600Mbps, 200MBps in most tests
I've not heard of an app that could modify the way the phone "clings" to 4G LTE, since that might likely be the modem firmware doing it on its own.

i have the G european model, in my town i have bad lte signal 1/2bar, when with my previously xiaomi mi4c was got 4/5 bars (maximum). In the big town i have got in the most of cases 4/5 bars. I think the "signal problems" are relatives of a lack of somehow software. i told this because i've read with the china model with the last updates an improvement of the signal reception of the phone.

You can however force a specific protocol indeed, but you will lack the ability to autoswitch networks. Just download 4G LTE Switch (here) which is a glorified secret code dialer. Just click on prefered network and change at your convenience (4G LTE only, WCDMA only - H+ - and so on). Remember that if you force 4G LTE in an area in which you have no coverage, you won't have internet, and no 2G/3G fallback (so no texts, no calls)
I don't know if this is the same problem, but my wife has an iPhone 6+ and I have an A2017U on B29 stock root. We both use the same network (Movistar Mexico) and while her iPhone often registers LTE, my A7 often registers 4G or even E in the same place. The A7 is receiving the same bands but appears to be "choosing" or locking into the slower protocols more often.
EDIT: NEVER MIND… an xposed module was messing with my network settings. Fixed it. Now I get LTE right away.

Disabling LTE on at&t g6

So in my area there is a very weak signal of LTE. On my old LG G2 I got .5 megabits on LTE but 6 on HSPA.
On the LG g6, I changed the apn to [email protected] but I just lose connection, however the phone toggles to UMTS. So when I swap back to any other apn (phone or nextgen) it stays on HSPA for a little while. I get 1 megabit dl/ .05 upload on LTE, but 6 megabits on HSPA with around 1.5 on upload.
AT&T is very obnoxious in their software and I see no way to disable LTE. When I try entering the code *#2683662# and going to diagnostic, it kicks me out saying it is not supported on this device.
I've also tried *#546368#*871# and I can go to Field Test > Modem Settings >
But there is no rat selection, just engienering mode and pdp settings, neither of which help me.
Anyone got any ideas? It seems unreasoanble that they are not allowing the option to disable LTE when it slows down my performance significantly.
For reference the dbm on HSPA is -91 while on LTE it's -121. I know they are not directly comparable, but when the absolute number in signal strength is that different there's a problem. At the very least the phone could be more aggressive to switch, but it isn't. I believe I am connected to 1900mhz on LTE, on HSPA I can't tell.

I found this on Stack Overflow. It's been a couple months since your post, so this might be pointless - but if you're still looking, you could try this. It seems odd that that menu would be disabled on our phone.

Nokia X6 2018 defaults to H+ connection on Cricket

Hi guys,
I just got a Nokia X6 on Android One shipped from China and for some reason it defaults continuously to H+ instead of LTE on my Cricket network. On my Network Type option in the Setting In only have 3 options 2G, 3G and 4G and I have 4G selected, but still H+ is being used by default even in areas where I used to get full LTE signal.
I have tried however to get into the Android Testing Menu (by dialing *#*#4636#*#*) and change the Preferred Network Type to a few options like LTE/UMTS auto (PRL), but for some reason is the H+ that is picket all the time. even in areas where I know the LTE signal is strong. If I select "LTE only" from that menu, then I'm getting on LTE but as soon as I go into weak signal region, the signal drops completely, while not the same thing I can say about the other option, when the H+ connection is present in the same weak signal area.
Another thing that I see in the Android Testing Menu is that my VoLTE provisioned option is Off and I can turn it on.
Do you guys have any ideas on how can I get this device connected to LTE when the signal is strong?
I have a Nokia X6. I put two SIMs into it, both show 4G.
I have some problem to connect data or mobile internet. Grammen phone provider.
I was ready to purchase one, however, was curious if this would work on t-mobile. If so, would the Wi-Fi calling work?
Did you already checked if your 4g network band compatible with your phone?

I have tried however to get into the Android Testing Menu (by dialing *#*#4636#*#*) and change the Preferred Network Type to a few options like LTE/UMTS auto (PRL), but for some reason is the H+ that is picket all the time. even in areas where I know the LTE signal is strong. If I select "LTE only" from that menu, then I'm getting on LTE but as soon as I go into weak signal region, the signal drops completely, while not the same thing I can say about the other option, when the H+ connection is present in the same weak signal area.
Another thing that I see in the Android Testing Menu is that my VoLTE provisioned option is Off and I can turn it on.

Could someone upload the bands for this phone? I'm not sure about get it, I need to know if TA-1103 have the LTE B4, in some sites said yes and other no.

So, have you solved your problem?
If the ROM of your phone is "CN" you could try to flash the phone to the global ROM 2_29(WW) or wait for a new update of the firmware. You haven't noticed the firmware's version. Have the phone got any updates?
I just returned the phone and got an LG G7 instead. The X6 that I was using also had a problem with Bluetooth as I was never able to turn it on.
Manually switch the preferred network type.
I am using the latest Stock Android version on Nokia 8 and struggled with this issue too. I tried everything I could possibly do.
The simplest answer is to go into network settings and select 2G, give it a minute to find it. Do it for 3G too. Give it a minute to find it. Then 4G, same thing. Finally select 4G as preferred network type and that should do it.
It looks like the default preferred network type is 3G from the factory.
guys i cant even access my mobile data connection can anyone tell how access it
