VR Music Video Distribution - Google Cardboard

Just released a 360 VR Music Video on YouTube: youtube.com/watch?v=rQAed_1jHmg
I think it's pretty unusual so would be curious what you folks think. But my main question is, where are the best methods for distribution of something like this outside of YouTube? Are there any major apps that people are using to discover VR Music Videos and the like? And if they exist what is the submission process?
Appreciate any insights

Is community-added DivX support possible?

Hi all,
So, I'm trying to establish whether it is possible for the community to add DivX support. I see commits like these:
https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/q...it;h=69023cf85787ff454ce0549f532f9aecfad2ae29
https://www.codeaurora.org/gitweb/q...it;h=208bf6e29780fd15bfd0f6d6575a26ae78591378
that add at least the start of DivX support. But I haven't been able to get it to build, and even then, it's not clear to me if things like a DSP firmware image or something else (presumably proprietary) is required.
Any insights?
Edit: this was originally posted in the Development section, as it is a development question, but it has been moved to General. There is no question that many people would like Divx and other codec support. This thread was supposed to be specifically about getting Divx support in OpenMax/mm-video working.

Using a program from the market I was able to watch a 720 MKV on my nexus the picture was fine and sound was fine.
Only issue was video was delayed while sound went full speed, other then this it was awesome looking.

Re: DivX support
i don't know what app the other guy is thinking about, but you can find in the market "yxplayer" (trial) and with it you can play at least videos like avi etc etc kn your N1. i think it wilk be hard to find a full free app for that goal. if you find, post here the name please.

[Q] so 720p/1080p video is a myth?

read too much in these forums, formatted too much on my comp.
i have got nothing but choppy video and sound delays. I dont buy into the tegra2 not being able to play 720p, that is complete crap.
but my concern is has anyone really been able to achieve some sweet 720p video? and if so can you let us know how you did so?
i have ALOT of converters so im ready to try once more before i begin to hate my life.
PS: I have absolutely no credible sources when i say this, but i believe a update of some sort will occur by this coming sunday (first week of march)

Use Handbrake. Simple and works great.
Set Video kbps to 2200
Set Audio to 160 kbps and samplerate to 48
On audio I also moved DRC to 4.0
Movies look great. Just make sure it is saving to mp4 and not m4v.

Most of the people haven't even gotten their Xooms yet. It IS unfortunate that it doesn't come with 720p decoding build-in, but we know for a fact that Tegra2 can handle even 1080p.
So, like it or not, we'll just have to wait a bit. I'm sure they are working on proper harware-accelerated codecs. Even if Moto isn't, tons of private developers do.
We're early to the party, so grab a beer, sit down and wait for everyone to come =)

I just converted a 1080 trailer of Ice Age 4 to an MP4 file of 1920x800 res, 5000Kbps H264 video, and it plays fine.
I use Total Video Converter & it works great..!!

Is 160 kbps for the audio going to sound that much better than 128? And is the DRC 4 going to be that different?

I love you..
Ill have to give some fine tuning a chance with my videos. I just coverted a 720p copy of inception using handbrake. I used the apple preset as its listed to work with ipad so i figured it wouldnt be much difference. While the movie and audio do play as they are supposed to im not happy with the frame rate. Its by no means unwatchable. But it is not nearly as fluid as i would like and the irregularity in framerate isnt even consistent. It gets choppier(i use the term loosely) at different intervals almost like im watching a streaming video or playing on a computer whos resources are tapped out. its really annoying because i cant even really gauge the consistency of it becuase its an inconsistent problem.
Im gonna try the settings someone a few post up suggested and see if that works out better. But even if they do its really a shame as most brain dead people can use an ipad. But they expect your average consumer to be able to do all this just to play a frikkin video and still call this thing an ipad competitor?

No one ever said that Tegra 2 can't play 720p. People have said that it can't play 720p high profile, which is pretty much all 720P that one doesn't encode themselves. Basically not all hd video is created equal. Others have said that it can play 720p but is just lacking some codecs.

Apple wants all their customers to just buy stuff of iTunes, so if you do that, it's braindead, but if not, they're in the same boat as us. It only plays 720p baseline (I hear XMBC for it can do 720p high profile, but you have to jailbreak to install it) so it needs to be converted too. Handbreak with presets is what I've been doing for my iPhone 3G, 4, and now Dell Streak.
I've been researching this alot this weekend, and to summarize the issue with 720p/1020p video, the deal is with the various bitrates and profiles of h264 video in particular. NVIDIA Tegra 2 and Motorola only claim to support 720p and 1080p baseline profile. So, for conversion workarounds, there is a Handbrake preset - See Keitht's post. I don't consider this an acceptable solution of course. I keep hearing that Notion Ink Adam's can play 720p high profile after an update. It would be nice to have that player on the Xoom - follow this thread here for info on that. As for now, QQPlayer does the best for 720p high profile - my eyeball guess is that it's playing 10fps now... someone on the forums here did the 1.5ghz overclock and said it's "acceptable" but I don't feel like overclocking my xoom 50% myself
So, I think this will be addressed, eventually. There are WAY to many Tegra 2 devices coming out for someone NOT to invest the time into getting a good player for it - LG's slate, Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1, Motorola Atrix, etc etc are all going to be Tegra 2 based.
The details in this thread definitely work, and work well. Yes it is going to take a while to convert things and yes that is a pain the ass to re-encode everything but the results ARE worth it.
THANKS
*SIGH* the trials and tribulations of the educated consumer.... why do they mock us so?!?
Great this definitely works. Just finished up a convert of Megamind 720p and it is smooth as silk.

Funny because I ordered a Notion Ink Adam before the Xoom came out and should ship next week. Since I got the Xoom, I do not want to open the box so I can sell it brand new unopened. Wish I could at least test the video.
So can anyone tell me does the "High Profile" mean like high compression because when I am doing re-encodes with the previous posted Handbrake settings I am seeing almost double the file output size of the original?

The profile setting indicates the quality of the video stream. There are lots of different profiles within the h.264/avc/mpeg-4 standards but the most common are (snaffled from wikipedia):
Baseline Profile (BP)
Primarily for low-cost applications that require additional data loss robustness, this profile is used in some videoconferencing and mobile applications. This profile includes all features that are supported in the Constrained Baseline Profile, plus three additional features that can be used for loss robustness (or for other purposes such as low-delay multi-point video stream compositing). The importance of this profile has faded somewhat since the definition of the Constrained Baseline Profile in 2009. All Constrained Baseline Profile bitstreams are also considered to be Baseline Profile bitstreams, as these two profiles share the same profile identifier code value.
Constrained Baseline Profile (CBP)
Primarily for low-cost applications, this profile is most typically used in videoconferencing and mobile applications. It corresponds to the subset of features that are in common between the Baseline, Main, and High Profiles described below.
Main Profile (MP)
This profile is used for standard-definition digital TV broadcasts that use the MPEG-4 format as defined in the DVB standard.[20] It is not, however, used for high-definition television broadcasts, as the importance of this profile faded when the High Profile was developed in 2004 for that application.
High Profile (HiP)
The primary profile for broadcast and disc storage applications, particularly for high-definition television applications (for example, this is the profile adopted by the Blu-ray Disc storage format and the DVB HDTV broadcast service).
You'll probably find a lot of movies available via "usual sources" are in high profile. On mobile devices these usually require some form of hardware acceleration to play due to the high bitrate. Not sure if there are many tablets that can play 1080p high profile natively. The Galaxy Tab is certainly one, but those devices with Tegra 2 chipsets do seem to have a hardware limitation with regards to playing high profile (and hence high bitrate) video. It'll be interesting to see how the Samsung 10.1 fares, as that happens to also have the Tegra 2 chipset. Samsung have always been good at hardware accelerating video, so it would be a backwards step for them to release a new device that can't play media that their previous device could.
paul so basically the xoom can only do 720 p baseline?
do apps like Rockplayer and Vplayer help? (without converting)

I'm sure 720p baseline should be fine with any player. 1080p baseline should be fine. Probably main profile too. The problems arise with high profile HD material, which unfortunately is what a lot of stuff out there is encoded with. Then again, I guess most people aren't going to stuff HD movies on their tablets. The 4GB max file size on fat32 gets in the way as much as anything else .
As an aside. I've been using Plex server to transcode and stream movies (including bluray rips) from nas to tablet (running Plex player) with excellent results. But that's probably best left for another topic...

Brightness is too high when playing videos after Marshmallow update.

When I try and view movies or TV in he Movies & TV app the brightness is too high. It changes from normal brightness to very high while the video is loading to play.
Anyone else having this problem?
Same here, noticing high video brightness and washed out blacks in all apps except Kodi.
I hope Google will put their staged rollout concept to good use and stop the Marshmallow OTA in order to roll out a version where this is fixed instead. Let's see if they're professional enough to actually do that.
Yes seeing that same thing happening. Unwatchable! I am so disappointed at this point. I had to buy another player just so my wife can watch Netflix after the last Netflix bug fiasco, and now this!? I was all excited and told her to watch nexus again and now this... Why do I keep hoping that they will get their **** together!!??!!
Same thing here. Also still not getting surround sound on Netflix through my HDMI switch -> optical receiver.
I just got the OTA upstate for 6.0. Can you guys show examples of how it looks?
---------- Post added at 11:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:58 PM ----------
I see the difference now. I compared my 5.1.1 Nexus Player with my 6.0 Nexus Player. Not good at all.
Not good at all what are the chances Google will address this? I've contacted them via Facebook a few days ago but not reply yet.
Quite high, I would say. As the primary function of this device is to display video content and this is directly affecting this functionality, expect this to get fixed before any other issues get fixed. I'm just surprised that this update passed their QA process.
Okay. Google did *NOT* stop the OTA. Mine received it and now: Everything washed out, brightness +200% like.
Well done.
I'm having the same problem with the washed out video. This is ashame. I actually just went out and purchased the nexus player yesterday because of Android M and it allowing mpeg2 hardware decoding. I installed the plex and homerun apps and noticed the washed out. I though ny eyes were playing tricks on me and stumbled onto this forum. Sure enough. Same problem. I also noticed that KODI did not suffer the same problem. Its steange. I wonder if an mx player or vcl might fix the issue. I have. ot tried the homerun addon within KODI yet but will try it tonight
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
HDHomerun within kodi looks a lot smoother to me. I can't tell if it's washed out or not as I'm viewing on a very old LCD monitor where everything is washed out and the motion blur is like GTA Vice City. But the VIEW app and w/in Live Channels the video stream looks a bit blocky, almsot not smooth and not crisp. WMC provided a much smoother picture for Live TV. Even w/in Kodi it looks fine. Not sure what's going on. It looked absolutely fine on Andriod M preview.
Yes, no doubt that the picture looks washed out via the TV Channels app. Comparing between Kodi and the TV Channels app, it is clear the picture in the TV Channels app has a huge brightness boost. I'm watching the ALCS tonight as my point of reference.
will certainly not upgrade mine, until I hear that this is resolved. Thanks for highlighting this (bad pun intended).
Can you prevent the player from auto-updating?
I was expecting Google to stop the OTA rollout, which is staged for exactly those reasons: in order to prevent *everybody* from receiving an OTA that turns out to be buggy. But they didn't do that; I received my update automatically after the problem was already known. Ridiculous.
Yep, video black levels are off on all Google-related apps: Play Movies, Youtube, Live Channels, and when casting from any app or casting screen. Currently all are unusable to me. Kodi and other apps with their own video codecs are fine, though.
It's so painfully bad that (yet again) I don't understand how Google engineers could have let this one slip through testing. It takes literally 30 seconds to notice the problem. What's the point of an achingly slow staged rollout if they don't actually fix these things?
Experiencing the issue here as well. What a pain.
I called Google about this and could not make the rep understand the issue. He kept thinking the video was in black and whtie or something. I called ASUS and they wanted me to send it in for service. I told them it was a software issue and that I'm not wasting my time sending it in. I have 3 units all exhibiting the same behavior so they should be able to figure this out using any unit they have in the lab.
have the same issue. Whenever an app uses HW accel. the blacklevels are off by a lot. I can replicate a similar behaviour on Media Player Classic with switching output range from 0-255 to 16-235. Searching for that google gives me something with RGB full and RGB limited. Not sure why this is happening but for the nexus player is horrible as video apps like netflix are unwatchable.
So it seems Menues are RGB full and HW video playback at RGB Limited
I can't believe we are still forced to put up with this. This is a simple (highly annoying) issue which should be easy to fix for Google. Does anyone have any news whether they're planning to ship a fix anytime soon?
No fix for this annoyance yet. There's also a forum under Google with people complaining about the same issue. Here's the link https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/nexus/B9w14NuBv5U

Does Netflix stream in HD in the US on the 6P?

Does Netflix stream in HD in the US on the Nexus 6P? Unfortunately, Netflix does not stream in HD on many Android phones. I'm hoping that it does on the 6P.
Netfix stream
Netfix stream will make a better satisfaction.
I just had a live chat with Netflix and they will support HD streaming in the US on the Nexus 6P & 5X. The rep said that their current list of Android phones which support HD streaming will be updated soon.
Here's the screenshot of our conversation:

(sorry can't post external links yet...)
That's great news. Good to hear that the beautiful screen on on the 6P will be put to good use by Netflix.
After having received my 6P a few days ago and watching a bit of Netflix, it appears to be in HD, although admittedly I am unsure how to verify it is. At least it looks good!
Well I know there is a marshmallow issue with the last update that is affecting nexus devices with streaming video such as Netflix and YouTube which is causing the video to look washed out, its happening on my phone. Google has said they are working on the issue.

YouTube on Fire TV 4K stick experience

Could you please share your experience with this new app?
I have my stick connected to my 5.1 Home Cinema HDMI port. At theokwnt I'm getting 5.1 sound from Netflix and Amazon Prime.
I was hoping that with dedicated YouTube app I will also get 5.1 sound. When on 9th July I downloaded and installed this new YouTube app I was excited as I played my purchased movies and inhad 5.1 sound.
Today when I started watching another purchased movie it is only stereo. I checked other movies from my YouTube library and now they all play stereo. Netflix and Amazon Prime are still playing 5.1.
I'm wondering if google have changed something or YouTube app have been updated in a meantime.
Also the video quality I can select watching purchased videos is showing max 480p however the video looks like 1080p so not sure what's going on. For other regular videos I can change quality to 1080p.
Can someone suggest any fix?
Thanks for comments.
Update 1
I think google/YouTube is doing something as today I can see quality options to have 1080p included now. However the sound is still 2.0. Hopefully they will change this too.
