Does Netflix stream in HD in the US on the 6P? - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Does Netflix stream in HD in the US on the Nexus 6P? Unfortunately, Netflix does not stream in HD on many Android phones. I'm hoping that it does on the 6P.

Netfix stream
Netfix stream will make a better satisfaction.

I just had a live chat with Netflix and they will support HD streaming in the US on the Nexus 6P & 5X. The rep said that their current list of Android phones which support HD streaming will be updated soon.

(sorry can't post external links yet...)

That's great news. Good to hear that the beautiful screen on on the 6P will be put to good use by Netflix.

After having received my 6P a few days ago and watching a bit of Netflix, it appears to be in HD, although admittedly I am unsure how to verify it is. At least it looks good!

Well I know there is a marshmallow issue with the last update that is affecting nexus devices with streaming video such as Netflix and YouTube which is causing the video to look washed out, its happening on my phone. Google has said they are working on the issue.

Youtube app

I was at the best buy store today and looked at the nexus s and I must saw im very impressed. Anyhow the guy in the store was talking about it having youtube 2.0 and being able to edit videos is this true?

Youtube app is exactly the same as on my Evo as far as I can tell.
Do you see issue with audio sync when playing youtube video?

Nexus 10 HDMI

Google Play videos do not play via HDMI cable to my TV. They play fine on the tablet screen, but not via HDMI. All other videos play fine via , e.g., YouTube, Netflix, Crackle, etc. Even my first tablet (Vizio) works fine via HDMI with Google Play videos. Anyone else having this issue? Yes, my TVs are all HDCP compliant.
Same Issue
I'm having the same issue and can not for the life of me find any information on it. It worked fine prior to 4.2.1 but now it just shows as loading regardless of the media being located on the device or coming from Google's servers.
First no Miracast and now this?
I guess I wont be updating to 4.2.1 just yet then as its working fine on my n10. Stock non rooted.

Works fine on my end. Plays just fine. 4.2.1

This has been a issue with every tablet I've had. I've been told that they don't play out of the HDMI out for security and licensing reasons.

Then how is it that I can play my Google Play movies. Even the 2min previews on movies works just fine through HDMI to my Phillips 50inch LCD tv

Does the free ice age movie count? That's what I can play on my Samsung TV.

Previews for Google Play videos play fine via HDMI on my Nexus 10, but not the actual purchased or rented videos. Have gotten no answers from Google support.

Have you tried playing previews from the play store bazbazbaz? Through the HDMI out that is
Both of the free movies I've had (Transformers: DOTM and Ice Age) play fine via HDMI. I've not purchased or rented any other content so I can't comment further than that.
I'm on rooted 4.2.1, but it works fine unrooted too.
I've noticed though that the previews play as a mirrored screen, whereas the actual movies play as an additional external display with the tablet display having the video controls on.
I'm in the UK if it helps at all; not sure if its worth tracking to see if it's an issue only affecting certain countries?
Google Play Movies will only stream through HDMI if your display support HDCP over HDMI...

I tested last night and have the same issue, I can mirror just fine, but when I get the "HDMI Screen" page for Google Play videos it just stays there with the spinner and won't play.
Can those of you who have this working chime in on this one; Do you guys have your bootoaders "locked"?
The only difference I can see is that I'm rooted (others say it works for them rooted), modified kernel (anyone else?) and my bootloader is still unlocked.
I'll make a Nandroid backup tonight and relock to see if that has any effect.
My television (Samsung 46" LED) is most certainly HDCP compliant. I do have the tablet connected to the ARC (Audio Return Channel) which could potentially be an issue, but I'll swap that later too, just to make sure.
Darn
anyone able to shed any light on this? I have relocked and temp unroot but nothing, it just completely refuses to play while HDMI is connected, it just still is at a page that says "HDMI Screen" with a spinner and a picture of a TV and that is it.
Just to make it worse, the latest update to YouTube won't let you full screen a video while HDMI is connected. You have to full screen it then plug HDMI in to get full screen.
I am 100% stock and unable to play anything out of the play store on my n10, however I still have my transformer infinity around and that is able to so I don't think it's a play store issue...

I purchased an episode of a TV show from the Playstore. It won't play on my TV either. Everything played fine on my old Acer Iconia. Now I purchase an actual Google device and it doesn't work?
It plays on my tablet, but the instant I plug the hdmi cable into the tablet it goes to some "hdmi" screen and won't play. Has anyone found a fix for this? Google support was useless. Their only suggestion was to download instead of stream. Neither works. Very disappointing because my "old eyes" enjoy things much better on my 46" TV as opposed to my tablet.

Agreed, still no fix found here, but I absolutely refuse to buy or rent anything until I know I can play it on my 46" TV. It's just obsurd.
I'll keep my fingers crossed for a fixed in the next Android release, otherwise I'll just forget Google Play movies exists entirely.
I just wish I knew of a player that would full screen my own content on the TV then it wouldn't be an issue.

Video streaming quality.

I just recently purchased the G2 and I've noticed some pretty poor performance when streaming video. I've tried both the youtube and Netflix apps and it doesn't look like it's HD quality at all. I've come from the iphone 5 where streaming in HD looks incredible. AND with the specs this phone has I would expect it to be capable of streaming even better. I tested the HTC one, g2, and S4 in the Verizon store and they all seemed to stream video pretty poorly. Is this just an android thing or am I crazy? I have a 720p and 1080p video stored on my phone and the quality is no where near that. I have the Nexus 7 and the quality on that is just amazing which makes me think it's not an android thibg. Can anyone shed some light on this for me?

YouTube has always looked better for me with quality files compared to Netflix. I have not been able to get Netflix to stream true HD even with a solid signal. Google video does exceptionally well. Using my own files, I get beautiful HD playback.
Is it the video player or the actual video itself?
I don't stream Youtube too often, but I thought something was seriously broken (software wise) when the videos looked low quality. I tried watching through a browser and there appeared to be no difference.
After several low quality videos, I just recently came across a video that offered really clear quality so I'm going to assume that it was poor quality uploads for the previous videos I watched.

Brightness is too high when playing videos after Marshmallow update.

When I try and view movies or TV in he Movies & TV app the brightness is too high. It changes from normal brightness to very high while the video is loading to play.
Anyone else having this problem?
Same here, noticing high video brightness and washed out blacks in all apps except Kodi.
I hope Google will put their staged rollout concept to good use and stop the Marshmallow OTA in order to roll out a version where this is fixed instead. Let's see if they're professional enough to actually do that.
Yes seeing that same thing happening. Unwatchable! I am so disappointed at this point. I had to buy another player just so my wife can watch Netflix after the last Netflix bug fiasco, and now this!? I was all excited and told her to watch nexus again and now this... Why do I keep hoping that they will get their **** together!!??!!
Same thing here. Also still not getting surround sound on Netflix through my HDMI switch -> optical receiver.
I just got the OTA upstate for 6.0. Can you guys show examples of how it looks?
---------- Post added at 11:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 10:58 PM ----------
I see the difference now. I compared my 5.1.1 Nexus Player with my 6.0 Nexus Player. Not good at all.
Not good at all what are the chances Google will address this? I've contacted them via Facebook a few days ago but not reply yet.
Quite high, I would say. As the primary function of this device is to display video content and this is directly affecting this functionality, expect this to get fixed before any other issues get fixed. I'm just surprised that this update passed their QA process.
Okay. Google did *NOT* stop the OTA. Mine received it and now: Everything washed out, brightness +200% like.
Well done.
I'm having the same problem with the washed out video. This is ashame. I actually just went out and purchased the nexus player yesterday because of Android M and it allowing mpeg2 hardware decoding. I installed the plex and homerun apps and noticed the washed out. I though ny eyes were playing tricks on me and stumbled onto this forum. Sure enough. Same problem. I also noticed that KODI did not suffer the same problem. Its steange. I wonder if an mx player or vcl might fix the issue. I have. ot tried the homerun addon within KODI yet but will try it tonight
Sent from my SM-N910V using Tapatalk
HDHomerun within kodi looks a lot smoother to me. I can't tell if it's washed out or not as I'm viewing on a very old LCD monitor where everything is washed out and the motion blur is like GTA Vice City. But the VIEW app and w/in Live Channels the video stream looks a bit blocky, almsot not smooth and not crisp. WMC provided a much smoother picture for Live TV. Even w/in Kodi it looks fine. Not sure what's going on. It looked absolutely fine on Andriod M preview.
Yes, no doubt that the picture looks washed out via the TV Channels app. Comparing between Kodi and the TV Channels app, it is clear the picture in the TV Channels app has a huge brightness boost. I'm watching the ALCS tonight as my point of reference.
will certainly not upgrade mine, until I hear that this is resolved. Thanks for highlighting this (bad pun intended).
Can you prevent the player from auto-updating?
I was expecting Google to stop the OTA rollout, which is staged for exactly those reasons: in order to prevent *everybody* from receiving an OTA that turns out to be buggy. But they didn't do that; I received my update automatically after the problem was already known. Ridiculous.
Yep, video black levels are off on all Google-related apps: Play Movies, Youtube, Live Channels, and when casting from any app or casting screen. Currently all are unusable to me. Kodi and other apps with their own video codecs are fine, though.
It's so painfully bad that (yet again) I don't understand how Google engineers could have let this one slip through testing. It takes literally 30 seconds to notice the problem. What's the point of an achingly slow staged rollout if they don't actually fix these things?
Experiencing the issue here as well. What a pain.
I called Google about this and could not make the rep understand the issue. He kept thinking the video was in black and whtie or something. I called ASUS and they wanted me to send it in for service. I told them it was a software issue and that I'm not wasting my time sending it in. I have 3 units all exhibiting the same behavior so they should be able to figure this out using any unit they have in the lab.
have the same issue. Whenever an app uses HW accel. the blacklevels are off by a lot. I can replicate a similar behaviour on Media Player Classic with switching output range from 0-255 to 16-235. Searching for that google gives me something with RGB full and RGB limited. Not sure why this is happening but for the nexus player is horrible as video apps like netflix are unwatchable.
So it seems Menues are RGB full and HW video playback at RGB Limited
I can't believe we are still forced to put up with this. This is a simple (highly annoying) issue which should be easy to fix for Google. Does anyone have any news whether they're planning to ship a fix anytime soon?
No fix for this annoyance yet. There's also a forum under Google with people complaining about the same issue. Here's the link https://productforums.google.com/forum/m/#!topic/nexus/B9w14NuBv5U

YouTube on Fire TV 4K stick experience

Could you please share your experience with this new app?
I have my stick connected to my 5.1 Home Cinema HDMI port. At theokwnt I'm getting 5.1 sound from Netflix and Amazon Prime.
I was hoping that with dedicated YouTube app I will also get 5.1 sound. When on 9th July I downloaded and installed this new YouTube app I was excited as I played my purchased movies and inhad 5.1 sound.
Today when I started watching another purchased movie it is only stereo. I checked other movies from my YouTube library and now they all play stereo. Netflix and Amazon Prime are still playing 5.1.
I'm wondering if google have changed something or YouTube app have been updated in a meantime.
Also the video quality I can select watching purchased videos is showing max 480p however the video looks like 1080p so not sure what's going on. For other regular videos I can change quality to 1080p.
Can someone suggest any fix?
Thanks for comments.
Update 1
I think google/YouTube is doing something as today I can see quality options to have 1080p included now. However the sound is still 2.0. Hopefully they will change this too.
