Several questions about Moto Z Force - Moto Z Force Questions & Answers

I picked up my Moto Z Force at Best Buy on Thursday. I couldn't pass up their deal. Getting this phone for $524 with the JBL SoundBoost speaker is awesome. I compared to regular Z before buying and the Force felt better in my hand (plus it has some great other upgrades). I'm loving the phone. I upgraded from a Droid Turbo and it is a significant jump up.
Several questions:
1. With my Droid Turbo when ever I connected to a Quick Charge 2 device (battery, car charger, and wall usb charger) the phone would indicate with a message that I was turbo charging. With the Moto Z Force I'm not getting a message with my bought Quick Charge 3 battery, car charger, and wall usb charger (Anker and Aukey). With the Force I'm only getting the "TurboPower Connected" message when I use the supplied wall charger. Is there anyway to confirm I'm charging at Quick Charge 3 speeds with my other devices? I'm hoping this can be done via software on phone.
2. It has been a while since I have used a micro sd card in phone. I'm loving I can do this with Moto Z even though getting card out is kind of pain in ass and you need special tool as well. I have the 200gb Sandisk Ultra Micro SD which I picked up a while back on sale for $50. Read speeds on this card are decent but write speeds are pretty slow. I'm noticing that speeds are significantly slower transferring large files to phone (with card in it) with cord vs. pulling card and doing with memory card reader. Is this normal? Is there any way to improve these speeds?
3. I'm looking for a good ultra thin case. I would like to add the least amount bilk and weight possible. I picked up a TPU case on amazon but it a bit bulky. Ideally I would like to get a thin polycarbonate case like Spigen's Thin Fit. Does anyone here know of a case like this for the Z Force?

"Turbo Charging" is proprietary. I have a QC3 chargeer that also does 3 amps. It doesn't say anything, as you mentioned, and both charge at the same rate.

1. I don't think these phones even support QC. The turbo chargers that come with the phones have it built in to work only with these phones, but they do push out decent charge for other phones as well. There was an app that measures how much charge you're getting, but I haven't tested it myself.
2. There is a tool that comes in the box to push out the micro sd slot. I'd say check to see if you formatted the card correctly for fastest transfer speeds. These phones are one of the few that actually support micro sd as true internal storage

Just picked up the Force on Thursday at VZW. Found the Best Buy deal. Called VZW they refused and would not compete.
Taking the other Z back to the store.
In just a day have to say the force is the way. Feels SOLID AND Clean. IMO

Interesting. All this time I thought that every device that had the Snapdragon 820 had QC 3.0. My bad. I have a Quick Charge 3 battery, car charger, and addition wall usb charger and was really hoping to charge at these faster speeds. I will do testing to see how they compare in speed to charger that came with phone. I'm also having problems finding Moto 30-watt Turbopower chargers anywhere on-line.
Memory card is formatted correctly (exFAT). Much slower speeds transferring files to card in phone vs memory card reader on same USB 3.0 jack.

I can tell you that I have both the Z and the Z force and neither will go into "turbo" mode with a QC 3.0 charger. Weird thing is that my Nexus 6p charger will put them both into Turbo mode. Odd.

why? why did motorola use a proprietary charging cable? it would of been so nice to have a micro usb cable to charge the xoom. im very worried one day that needle proprietary cable going to break and it wont charge my xoom anymore.
it seems like motorola is a HUGE fan or proprietary cables, especially the v60 series flip phones.

Simple, many recent tablets use proprietary cables to allow higher current and faster charge times.
The average usb cable hooked up to your pc provides about 500mA
The proprietary cable for a modern tablet like the XOOM can deliver around
1.5A
With a micro USB cable it would take forever to charge the XOOM. Then people would be complaining about why the XOOM takes so incredibly long to charge, and bashing motorola for the problem. Instead Motorola chose to do it the intelligent way, by separating the charge function to a proprietary cable to allow very fast charging, and including the usb cable for data transfer.
When I see a proprietary cable I don't think - crap why do they do it this way. Instead I think wow great, that means this thing was designed for fast charges.

plus, the input voltage in to the tab is 12v, hard to get 12v from a 5v USB supply...
For a bit more info, I too wondered about USB charging. The limit seems to be when the Xoom is running, the current drain can be upwards of 400 mA so I could see a situation where a USB charger at 500 mA would overload if you did too much on the Xoom during charging. That would be good enough reason to avoid that design mess. "Do not use during charging" would not be sufficent protection. The Moto Mains Charger manages 1500 mA for a couple of hours which is wonderful. Now if only I could charge my Nexus S that quickly

I am really glad that trickle charging is not possible with the Xoom, saves a lot of problems...I just wish they had used a different connector for the power. Something a bit more durable and commonly included in third party multichargers would have been nice...but one can't have everything.
I still support the seperate power cable choice for all kinds of reasons.

Just amazes me that folks will complain about anything and everything. Good grief, it charges in no time and runs more than a day when it does. What more can you expect?
I like the idea of a separate charger, but the only thing I take issue with is the design of the charger it self. Luckily, I just set mine on the dock before bed. The dock doesn't use that flimsy pin, it uses the two gold plates at the bottom to charge.

going to have to look into that dock cause i'm not to fond of the charger that it has. so the avg. use time is about a day, are you guys mod or heavy users(as you can tell i dont have mine yet ordered and waiting for it to show up)trying to get as much real world use info as i can
i love the proprietary cable. It is SOOO much faster. My Galaxy tab with a 4000 mAH battery took almost 4 hours to charge and i was lucky to get two days usage out of it (standby time and normal usage combined). My Xoom (no idea on mAH size) charges in 2 hours and i get 90 hours usage out of it (mainly standby but still a lot of screen on time, wiht a much larger and brighter screen to power). LOVE it.
Yeah I wouldn't worry about the Cable its seems durable, only thing I AM worried about was how you plug the wires all on the side of the device, I feel like there's abit of give on the wires when holding it sideways, I wish it was more like the iPad.
You know the first time I saw that the tablets used a seperate charging cable I was like, "why?" but then I stopped and think, there's no why a USB (let alone a micro-USB) can charge those suckers, so I'm personally glade that tablet makers did what they did and make it seperate.
I just wish they chose a 30-pin connector instead of this tiny one. The slightest mistake while it's charging (like say you trip over the cord), and there goes your xoom for repair/replacement.
Lets not rule out USB charging. Yes, I love going from 5% to 100% in about an hour. But I also have USB plugged in for hours on end when doing my thang. . That being said, we do not know for certain that USB charge is a hardware limitation. Yes, USB puts out 500mV. But I can tell the kernel to suck in whatever. If the hardware is capable, its doable.
I still think the option should have been given to us. Cuz many if not all of us have micro USB around. I for one only take a single micro USB in my pocket for my phone. So its would have Been nice to be able to charge both device with one charger. But I mean scull charge usually carry me all day. So I don't see it as a major problem right now.

Its actually 500mA not 500mV. Usb provides 5 volts at 500ma for usb 2.0 and that will be picked up to 900ma in usb 3.0. Even with this in mind it isn't the biggest problem with stoppinh usb charging in the xoom. The issue I believe is in the fact that the current charger is 12 volts and 1.5 amps. That's more than twice the volts at tripl the amperes.
Even beyond the amperage issue charging a battery that is set up to input from a 12 volt source with a 5 volts supply, even if it was possible with existing xoom hardware it would take forever!
I wish there was a way to have both options available for charging. Use the USB if you have no access to a AC adapter, albeit, a slower charge.
It seems that there's a false dichotomy here; the options aren't only trickle charge by usb and wall adapter with the proprietary connection. What about a wall charge via the usb port? I don't see why the usb port couldn't be used for the charge. I can trickle charge my n1 or I can plug it into an outlet, which charges the phone much faster. I'm sure the xoom could have been designed to suck in more power when conected to an outlet.
The only plus with the proprietary port is that we can charge and have the xoom connected to a computer or peripheral at the same time.

Turbo Charger

I found this interesting....
The Turbo Charger works officially with the Moto X (2nd gen) and Nexus 6. It will work with the DROID TURBO as well, but that phone isn’t exactly official yet. The DROID TURBO and Nexus 6 should include a Turbo Charger in the box, whereas with the new Moto X, you will have to fork out $34.99 for one.

yup, says so in the leaked VZW training/marketing material that the charger is included in the box of the turbo...
it also mentions that charging speed (of the turbo charger) slows as the device reaches full charge...as it is intended to be used when the battery is near depletion..
of course the jury is still out on what effect the turbo charger will have on the performance/life expectancy of the battery if you choose to use the turbo charger as your normal charger...

Slowing charging as it nears full isn't all that bad. I've seen a lot of people arguing over whether it is bad for the phone and all that, but the reality is no one really knows. I can't imagine that they'd be providing only one charger, that will over time kill the battery on a device with a battery that is not accessible. I know the amount of time that people hold on to devices is getting shorter and shorter these days, but if it was really bad for the battery it would be a pretty terrible idea to encourage people to use it. Sure heat isn't great for batteries, but this is a brand new technology, so one might think that there is also equally new technology to help counteract that heat, or some other voodoo magic to make it work well.
I'm actually more excited for wireless charging. I have a Nexus 7 that supports it, but don't have any charging pads. I didn't really want to buy one just for the N7 because I don't use it nearly as much as my phone. But if I can have one pad for both, I'll get one for my desk at work and one for at home (probably the side table for when I'm watching TV or using my Chromebook in the living room). I know it would take forever to charge it to full, but I'd want it more for quick bumps during the day. If I'm sitting at my desk at work listening to Pandora on my phone, I usually plug in if I'm below 60% or so so that I can be sure I'll have enough juice for the rest of the day/evening. I use hotspot on the bus ride home for my N7, and that usually takes about 20% of my overall battery each way to/from work. If I could just plop it down and add even 4-5% throughout the day here and there, I'd be good. Although, with the monster battery in the Turbo, I don't know that it would really matter at that point.
Either way, I'm pretty much over the N6 based purely on size, and will almost certainly be getting the Turbo once a reliable (and fairly simple) root method has been found.

[Comparison] Updated Charging Speeds Comparison (QC 2.0/3.0, 10W Qi, Standard) S7/S7E

Method:
First I used my phone until the battery was below 15% in order to get a better picture of what the charging would look like over almost a full battery cycle. I did not start at the same battery percentage for each test because I did not find any benefit to doing so. I original did this for uniformity, but it did not make a difference after trying it using the more accurate equipment.
I then cleared my history in the Battery Monitor Pro Widget (BMW Pro) recording app which was used to log the battery [mV], battery temperature [F], time, and battery percentage changes. Once this was done I plugged in my USB Power Monitor, turned airplane mode on, removed the case, and let the phone charge. I started logging the data via my power monitor once the phone showed it was charging. From this point onward I let the phone charge without interrupting it until it reached 100%, then I let it charge for another 10-60 minutes to see if it was still drawing power from each charger. Once all of this was done, I exported my data collected from BMW Pro, emailed it to myself, and pasted it along with the USB Power Monitor data into an Excel spreadsheet. All of the data was then delimited to separate the clusters of data due to the way they were recorded, and subsequently graphed. The USB Power Monitor recorded data points every 0.36 seconds, while the BMW Pro took recordings every 5 seconds because I was having issues with the “real-time” recording option in the app working correctly.
All of the data was then graphed into the nice figures you will see below; each color reflects the same variable across all of the graphs to make reading them easier. I included a legend at the top of each set of graphs which should also help make it easier to read the data.
The most interesting part of this test is how cool the S7 Edge stays while charging, and the very marginal difference in overall charging time between QC 2.0/1.0. A 15-minute gap is marginal at best given the ‘big improvements’ Qualcomm claimed when launching the newer standards.
When conducting the wireless charging tests I think there is some error in the Samsung Fast Wireless charging data, so I plan on redoing it at some point. I already redid the Choetech one because it has a similar strangely long, but now it seems more in line with what I initially found before using the newer testing equipment.
I wanted to also quickly point out that both my HTC 10 and S7 Edge keep pulling current even after the phones show they are 100% charged. I’m not talking about a tiny amount; they both pulled ~1-5W+ after hitting 100% battery which is A LOT considering they are reporting to be fully charged. I verified this using 3 multimeters just to be sure. It appears as if Qualcomm, or the OEM’s are falsely reporting when the phone is actually charged, or there’s some other shady things going on here.
Another thing I wanted to mention is how the S7 Edge is so consistent in the way it charges the battery. It could be due to the lower rates Samsung uses (9V/1.67A max which is 15.03W) vs the HTC 10’s up to 18W that I’ve seen it pull. Just take a look at how the S7 Edge charges using QC 2.0 compared to the HTC 10 with lower temperatures, similar times, and a much more consistent overall charging curve.
If you look at the Tronsmart & Choetech QC2.0 tests, then you might notice the large difference between the two. The Tronsmart charger has a harder time holding onto the proper voltages, therefore it bounces around more from ~8.92V-9.03V (a 0.11V change) while the Choetech one ranges from 9.077V-9.092 which is a significantly smaller 0.015V range. The power control chip is responsible for controlling these voltages, and clearly the Choetech one has a better chip in it. This is especially important for external battery packs where efficiency really matters due to the limited amount of power they can store.
Equipment:
These tests were conducted using a series of different chargers. The same brand was used for both Quick Charge 2.0/3.0 tests to minimize experimental error; This trend remained the same was also done for the wireless charging tests

Quick Charge 2.0: Tronsmart 18W charger 5V/2A, 9V/2A, 12V/1.5A
Quick Charge 3.0: Tronsmart 18W charger 3.6-6.5V/3A, 6.5-9V/2A, 9-12V/1.5A

Tronsmart 5-12V USB multimeter (not used in this test, but was used in the older version)

my main concern with the s7 is the battery life, i know it won't last me a full 18hr day so i really need a portable fast qc2 charger that is pocketable, so maybe 5000mah, but have not seen such a small qc charger tho

I don't have a thermal camera, or way to do that otherwise I gladly would. I can recommend a small 6000mah external battery pack if you want; Ill do a quick write up too (if you need one). The Samsung charger stayed at 9V the whole time per my multimeter's reading it just dropped go .5A near the end.

Thank you, I will add in a standard wireless charger test (since my free Samsung one is enroute), and I can also get their fast charger too. I believe Samsung's fast wireless charger is only 7W so it would be slower than the Choetech one but it never hurts to see how fast it is.

with the heat measurement, I'll be happy with your commercial grade temperature sensor that the great designer created for you, your fingers or better yet, the inside of your wrist.
preferably touching the same area on the phone every time and grading something like 1-5 hot/comfort levels maybe? just suggesting, no pressure

I'll look into some methods to measure the heat easily while they're charging. I'm conducting the standard wireless charger test using my free Samsung wireless charger right now QC 2.0 chargers the fastest when you start at a very low battery percentage, so ideally you can achieve the results posted, but ambient temperature, starting % etc contribute to whether or not that's attainable. It's still a good estimate for 30 minutes of charging +/- 5% for other factors. The phone also chargers slower when the screen is in. The rate would go from 9V/1.67A to 9V/1.10A with the screen on. It was very consistent when I turned the screen on and off during the test.

i actually won't care about heat issues while charging this time round, it'll be like my moto defy, i just run it under cold water after a fast hot charge, wont be using the s7 for many years so not worried about moisture build up.
i have ordered a magnet micro usb cable that says its rated for 2.4A charging so hopefully it'll allow easy qc2.0 charging, no need to plug in, it magnetically snaps on and off.
i think the best charge setup would be a 30mins quick charge (magnet) on the office desk than a 60mins wireless qi charge, carried in your pocket type situation.

Did you by chance order the Znaps? I backed them ages ago for both the Type-C and micro USB connectors. If I'm lucky I might eventually maybe sometime before I die receive them. I don't expect much from a kickstarter campaign that's been delayed this much. I'm finishing up the standard Qi/PMA charging test. It shouldn't matter the standard it's using but if it's important the Samsung wireless charger is actually PMA.

Let me know how it works, I rarely use cables to charge my phone becusse I hate micro USB ports plus I'm used to the type C on Nexus.

Yes it doesn't matter becuase the phone is only rated for 15.03W so it can't use more than that no matter the charging method. See screenshot below:

@Pilz yeah sure, it should arrive in a couple of weeks. i hate plugging in as well, even with the usb type c, its reversible but finding the port isn't always easy, they should have made the port surface like a cone or funnel so your guided into the port more easily.
the use of the magnet is awesome, Sony's external side charging pins have been around for ages, its really the charging current and quality of the copper that im worried about.

I never knew that plugging in a micro USB cable was so difficult. It could be one of those things that once you try a better alternative (type c maybe?) makes you ask how you lived without it, but I don't see what the fuss is about just yet.
I've used wireless chargers for years (way back in the NExus 5 days even) including in the car. Any word on fast wireless charging and heat? I'm worried about it pumping a ton of heat on to the back of the phone especially for extended periods such as overnight.

I've used wireless chargers for years (way back in the NExus 5 days even) including in the car. Any word on fast wireless charging and heat? I'm worried about it pumping a ton of heat on to the back of the phone.

Micro USB is just more of a hassle becusse usually you need to angle it while inserting it into the phone. Type-C is nice becuase there no worrying about how I need to orient a cable when I'm half awake plugging my phone in. It's hard to understand why its nice until you use it everyday.
I haven't been able to measure the heat yet, but the phone is cooler using the 10W wireless fast charger than it is using QC 2.0. The phone isn't hot to the touch but it is warm using the fast wireless charger. I'll try to download a battery monitoring app that measures battery temp while it's charging. This method won't be as accurate as physically measuring it, but it should still give a good indication of the temperature.
Edit: I tested the temperature using GSAM battery montior via the fast wireless charger fro ~6% charge (28-34%) and the temperature rose 6 [F], the I let the phone cool and tested QC 2.0. The phone was charger for 6% to keep things cosnistent with a temperature change of 5[F]. I would need to find a way to more accurately measure these values because that quick test doesn't really mean anything at this point.

It's just a QC 2.0 charger from what I can tell. I have a battery pack that will charge using QC 2.0 so I can test it using my multimeter

Wireless Qi charging mod possibilities?

With my aging Nexus 6 coming to the end of its lifespan as a daily carry device, I've been looking for other devices. Looking into the Google Pixel 3 / 3 XL or OnePlus 6T, both phones have a few issues of concern that will likely require compromise from the Pixel's lack of RAM for a flagship as well as the OP6T's lack of wireless charging. I will never understand how OnePlus has such a grudge against Qi charging as an option; simply because it is not as fast as a USB connected "Dash" charge (unsure why they won't use the standard Qualcomm quick charging spec that many devices uses) doesn't mean it isn't desirable, as I've been charging my phones predominantly via wireless Qi since the Nexus 4 days!
However, I was wondering if interested enthusiasts could remedy OnePlus' oversight with a Wireless Qi mod? After market, latest-generation Qi receivers are apparently plentiful and inexpensive (I'd worry of suspect quality in some cases) , but many seem the type to be placed on the rear of the chassis inside a case and connect to the USB plug. They can also be placed inside the phone itself, but still make the connection via the bottom USB port. While neither of these are entirely disqualifying, it would be much better if there was a way to connect the Qi receiver internally, leaving the USB port accessible. Back in the days of the earlier Galaxy devices, I can remember there used to be receivers mounted internally in certain devices - https://www.amazon.com/VILIGHT-Wire...1790504&sr=8-24&keywords=wireless+qi+receiver - is one example, thanks to the way the battery and layout of the phone is set up.
Perhaps something similar could be done for the OnePlus 6T? Does anyone know the feasibility regarding the internal layout of the 6T? If we are not lucky enough to just be able to tap into a few connections, could there be some sort of (ideally solder free) mod done with relative ease? Perhaps there is something else I'm not considering, but I assume it all hinges on the internals of the 6T.
Its insane that users should need to consider a mod in order to add such a common feature in flagship or even mid-grade phones, but if there's a relatively good chance of a mod like this it would encourage me to look closer at OnePlus this time around. Thanks.

I bought the Nillkin Type C Wireless Charging Receiver from amazon and stuck inside the case that came with the phone. I had bought another case on amazon but that one was too thick to get a QI signal to go through. The charging is ok, not the fastest tho.

I have the nillkin on my OP6. Since I always use a case, it's a non-issue to stick the charge pad inside the case.
Thank you all for the links to reliable plug-in Qi receivers; if I go with the OP6T I may end up getting one of those if there's no other alternative. User reports and feedback on Amazon suggest these are pretty delicate in how they're bent and the like, so I am curious if anyone is unplugging/replugging them (to connect to the USB port for some other reason) with reasonable frequency without issue?
I've not seen any content from "jerryrigeverything" on YouTube but I'll check it out when I'm able to do so.
The big question however is the viability of an internal Qi receiver installation that does not require plugging in via the external USB jack....

You will need to remove the back which is glass and do internal soldering.

I've loved wireless charging on the n6. And was bummed about it missing on the 6t. But honestly battery life is so insanely good on the 6t. I mean insane! And it charges so fast, I don't feel the desire to get wireless charging anymore. I kid you not. Battery life and charging are fantastic compared to the Nexus 6.
I'm down to 38% and it's been 23 hours since I took it off the charger.
I have been using the nillkin since I got phone. I had a note 8 and used wireless exclusively. So once I got the 6t I have been doing the same. The battery life on this phone is so good I just charge once a day. I go to sleep lay it on wireless charger and wake up to 100%. No messing around with cables. It also charges just as fast as the fast wireless charging on my note 8.

Has anybody with one of these noticed any issues with heat?
I have an aftermarket Qi adapter attached to the battery of my Samsung S5 phone and whether with an old or a new battery, the phone generates a lot of heat when charging from a low battery state. I've been concerned about overheating the processor.

QI Charging (any charging for that matter) is going to generate heat,more so on slow QI Charging.
It takes longer & there's no heat pipe/paste in the OP6T to aid in dissipating the heat. (see video teardown,FF to the 1:30 mark):
I always use a small desktop fan near my charging points at home.
I'm not a battery conserving hawk or handle my phones as if they're priceless museum pieces,but,a small fan is any easy to use solution & in cooling the phone,may actually speed up the charging process a bit.
I have a couple that have worked previously, but couldn't for the life of me get them working on my OP6. I've ordered an OP6T so hopefully will be able to get it working when it arrives.
I have a strange issue with the QI Receiver i bought from Ali express. When i put the Qi Receiver on the back of the phone and put it on a charging pad, i can see the battery percentage goes up all the way to 100% but the phone never thinks that its getting charged. I mean the charging symbol never comes up and even BBS and other Battery Monitor apps don't think its getting charged. But the percentage reaches 100. Does anyone know a solution for this issue

I had wireless charging on a few devices previous to my OnePlus 6t and loved it. When I'm using OOS 10.3.8 and xXx magisk rom I charge my phone once every two days and I'm a HEAVY user!! I usually get about seven hours screen on time on my 6t!!! Insane battery is right!! I do miss wireless charging though. Appreciate everyone sharing here. I may try some things out as well. If and when I do I'll return and comment about it. Cheers.

Charging speed

The phone recognises my older QC3.0 chargers and draws almost 6V at 3A as displayed by an inline meter. I'm pretty happy with this. I don't have an inline meter to determine what's going across USB-PD though.

I'm on the fence buying the 2 to c adapter for my phone to attach to my dock...
There is something going on when connected to a USB-PD port and the phone recognises it as turbo power. I don't have a USB-C meter to measure though.

I have the Mexican version of this phone and I spent 2 months in Europe (where there's 220v power). I used the same TurboPower charger and after a couple of weeks there, the TurboCharging stopped working. The phone still charges but it takes about 4 hours to charge from 0% to 100%. Also, the phone is no longer recognized by my computers (Windows 10 and Kubuntu 18.04). I tried different USB cable and chargers and they all TurboCharge and USB-connect with my son's identical phone but not with mine. (My son never took his phone to Europe though so that's why his works still).
This makes me believe that something in the 220v power messed up my phone's USB-C port and it now functions in the slow format and without data. That's fine but just thought I'd mention it because it seems like something that also happened in previous Moto G-series phones.
Anyway, I hope this helps someone.

I'm assuming the 220v standard is higher than that here in the US, maybe it's suffered damage from overvoltage or something of that sort?
Just a sorta-educated-sorta-uneducated guess on my part, I know very little about the ins and outs of electricity and its interactions with electronic devices.

I've had similar things happen to one of my LG phones when travelling... never went back to the way it used to.
