Wifi scanning bug workaround to prevent battery drain - Sony Xperia XA Guides, News, & Discussion

As most already have noticed or at least heard of, the Xperia XA's battery can be drained quickly, even when not being used. Sony staff has admitted there is a bug with wifi scanning/wifi-assisted geolocation. Because I see many people asking about it here, I'm pasting below the solution by Sony staff on Sony forums, that's what helped me.

Re: xperia XA: massive battery drain

I'm sorry to hear that sad
You may notice that the battery is drained in standby mode if you turn on Wi-Fi. This is due to a software error that prevents your device from entering sleep mode. This issue will be fixed in an upcoming software release, rolled out via FOTA and Xperia Companion. As a workaround, first turn off Wi-Fi, then turn off Wi-Fi scanning. Once the Wi-Fi scanning has been turned off, turn Wi-Fi back on. The recommendation is to keep Wi-Fi scanning off until you have installed the updated software version, to prevent this issue from occurring every time you restart your device.
Note! Software updates are released at different times depending on operator and/or country.
Affected Xperia™ devices and software versions:
Xperia™ XA F31 (F3111, F3112, F3113, F3115, F3116): 33.2.A.2.16 and 33.2.B.2.35
Xperia™ E5 F33 (F3311, F3313): 37.0.A.1.83 and 37.0.A.1.105
Note! This is only valid for devices with a limited type of software configuration.
To turn off Wi-Fi scanning:
From your Home screen, tap the Application screen icon.
Find and tap Settings > Location.
Tap the menu button (three vertical dots), then tap Scanning.
Drag the slider beside Wi-Fi scanning to the left.

As seen here.
I'm using Sony Xperia XA Dual F3116, on firmware 33.2.B.2.35.
Hope this helps.

Yeah, absolutely. A lot to improve in coming updates. The thing barely came out the door anyway, it was released not a month ago here in Brazil.

Possible cause and solution to X10 Battery? -"No Sleep Bug"

Hey guys,
Just updated to the x10 after my samsung galaxy died on me, so far i am rather happy - except for the lack of root, but that will come.
I have noticed many complaints on the forum about battery life, and have experienced the same thing myself. From my experience, i think this looks like the same issue that was faced on a leak of 1.6 for the galaxy - it was referred to as the "No Sleep Bug".
TBH, the name says it all - for some reason, in many builds of android 1.6, phones were not sleeping correctly. There are many theories as to why, from cpu not being allowed to sleep, to permanent communication with google servers.
Despite all these different theories, one thing seemed to fix the problem - turning off all location services. Some people argue that a different carrier build, turning off just 'share with google' under location, turning off just AGPS etc. would fix it, but from my experience, the only real way to fix the issue was to turn off all GPS usage unless you need it. The once you have used it, reboot your phone.
This fix obviously sucks, and a new fix has recently been released by a veritable android-demigod around the Galaxy.
HERE IS A THREAD ABOUT NO SLEEP ON i7500 GALAXY;
(ok, some stupid rule says i can't post links - can a mod help me out?)
HERE IS THE FIX FOR THAT PARTICULAR BUG;
(ok, some stupid rule says i can't post links - can a mod help me out?)
LINKS ARE IN POST #5 - THANKS TO ONDOTEAM (would still be nice to get them in this original post though)
Now, from my experience, no sleep behave exactly the same way on the x10 as it does on the Galaxy;
1) I turn of all location services, and my battery life at least doubles.
2) After said turning off of services, 'spare parts' no longer says 100% running time under battery usage - in fact it can be as low as 10%.
These two factors are identical to my experience with Galaxy. SO; is there any way drakaz's fix can be applied to our X10's? It seems to me that the files he mods are standard Android system files, not sony/samsung specific.
Now i am no developer, so i dont know it this is possible - the first question that comes to mind for me is "do we need root access, or can this be done through developer tools using the android SDK?"
Can anyone help shed anymore light on this?
Seems to work for me. I disabled all location services. Spare Parts went down from 100% to 7.6%.
I'll just have to enable GPS when I need to use it..
Awesome! Glad to hear it has helped.
Let's keep testing this guys - if it does show up to be a big cause, then perhaps the devs around this place can help is figure out a patch for Drakas' mod to make it work with our x10's!

No sleep is easy to fix, took me a while to figure it...
Turn your screen brightness from manual to auto, spare parts will now start showing proper running stats, no more 100% running.
The screen is a little dark in auto but it will cure the 100% running.
GPS and location services etc make no difference to my X10i, I am running the 1.6 version unbranded UK handset, the only thing to stop mine running 100% is to put the screen on Auto.

LOL... this is already going the way of the Galaxy thread!
My phone came out of the box with auto-brightness and i never changed that option, yet i still had no sleep.
Drakaz has done some fairly deep digging and is next to certain that it is an artefact of the geolocation bug discussed in the thread in which the problem was fixed.

Me neither.. I was wondering about that myself!..
Although I'd half assumed that they were referring to the total "up-time" figure which you can see at the bottom of the "about phone"; "Status" screen.. But perhaps not.?
Spare Parts is a standalone Program ...
(i don't know for sure if it is in the market or downloadable as .apk from somewhere here in the forum ...)

Spare parts is indeed available from the market - it is a much more powerful tool for indicating battery usage than the regular android methods. The galaxy stared on 1.5 which had NO indicator of battery usage statistics at all, so we all learned about spare parts very fast.
Perhaps that is why no x10 users have realised about the potential no sleep bug; because so far only the android usage indicators have been used?...
Anyway, hopefully this can help us all understand the way our phones are working better together

14% it's mine value for running time, not 100%. By the way thats 30 minutes of 210 in total :S
I'm also experiencing "No sleep bug" after i used GPS. I use Battery Graph to plot my power consumption and after I use GPS, I can clearly see that power consumption is high even if i turn the phone in plane mode.
In addition SE widget, used to turn on/off GPS, seems to not work very well for me. So, to fix the bug, i manually disable GPS in parameter menu and restart my phone. After that power consumption is hardly null (20% in 8h with MP3 on almost all the time).

Do you have 3G always on?
My phone has no trouble sleeping.
Gps hasn't really been an issue but I keep it off when not needed.
Here's my solid settings:
1) No auto sync
2) No moxier
3) Gps off
4) Restart after using wireless
As long as it's like this my phone lasts 2 days easily

Yes, but I made a lot of test with and without 3G enabled and 3G seems not to be a problem for me. I think my problem comes from GPS.

I have been playing with mine for a month to work out what caused mine to not go into sleep, I keep GPS wifi etc on 24/7 but in spare parts I was running 100%, after numerous reinstalls and removing everything i chanced on turning on auto screen brightness, now when i unplug my x10 the running sits at the correct level.
No Geolocation bug here
I have this problem with 100% on and off. Sometimes when I check its under control (~10%), other times its at 100%. I have GPS off, no WiFi, auto brightness... don't know why it sometimes just gets stuck at 100% :/

[Q] wifi scanning continually on s4 even though already connected to a network

Hi,
I purchased the s4 through radio shack 4 days ago. I was having issues with the wifi staying connected for more than a minute. After doing research and reading forums I came to the conclusion it was my router. I've reset it and done firmware updates and changed security to WEP and wifi issue was resolved. However now it is constantly scanning for a wifi network even though it's already connected to one. Have called samsung and radio shack sbout this and am getting various responses such as it is normal, or no it is not normal let's try a a hard reset to see if it fixes the issue. So this forum is my last resort before completely resetting the phone. Should wifi be continuously scanning even if connected to a network or not? Thanks

Mine still scans for Wifi about every 4-5 seconds even when connected to Wifi. It seems to be normal and believe it did this on my S3 as well. Unless it is draining your battery I wouldn't worry about it. Also, it may only do it when you are in the Wifi settings and not when you exit but who knows. I get great battery life so it is something I'm not going to worry about.

sure how to check whether it is or isn't. Just dont want to find out months down the road that I have a defective device. Will resetting it fix the?

I have not asked because my battery life doesn't seem to be affected by it. Also, I think my S3 did it also. From what I find when doing an internet search everyone else is seeing the same thing so almost positive it is made this way. When I look at the breakdown of battery usage (Settings->More->Battery) Wifi is only using 6% of my battery. Look and see what is using battery on yours. If you need more detailed information on what is using the battery than get BetterBatteryStats from Play store to help pinpoint it. There is a forum just for it where you can post and get help figuring it out if need be.
Also, as for resetting, I just did a factory reset yesterday and it still scans when in the Wifi settings.
The scan interval is probably cooked into the build.prop somewhere by Samsung. Usually apps like Blade Buddy and Rom Toolbox Pro can change it but BB is not compatible yet with the S4 and Rom Toolbox doesn't show the scan option in the build.prop list. I looked at a few of the custom TW roms and not finding any changes to that listed in any build.prop tweaks.
If I had to guess would say there is something else on your device using the battery but using BetterBatteryStats can pin point it for you.
**Edit....From what I am reading it seems there is nothing in the build.prop to edit. A line needs to be added in to change the default scan interval. I'm not 100% positive on this but seems to be the case.

OK I've looked at battery usage and and wifi is at b 4% and screen has the highest percentage eventhough I have it at a lower resolution. However when I click on wifi from the battery setting it says it has only been connected to Wifi for 4hrs. 32 minutes . I've had wifi turned on since I got home last night. Could that be the issue? I did charge the phone overnight unless it shuts off while charging but still my emails would have to sync every hour. Do you know why it would say it's only been connected for 4 hrs if I've been home much longer than tgst? Thanks for the help. And also did you reset your phone due to the wifi scanning?
THANK YOU

I don't know about the reported length of time for WiFi. Mine seems to be accurately reporting when I connected to WiFi this morning at work till now. Maybe it disconnected and then reconnected for something? Do you have multiple bands in your home (2.4ghz & 5ghz) to where it could have jumped between them? Did you walk outside and out of range for a sec? Maybe for some reason it had a hiccup and got disconnected and reconnected. Not sure.
Also, I did a factory reset for a Play Store issue and not because of the WiFi.

Jellybean 4.3 has been responsible for one of the highest complaints to hit android since androids launch.
Wifi overscanning
Battery management
HDMI Completely not working
The list goes on, this is all because some idiots wanted to rush jellybean out to accommodate for the introduction of the Samsung Gear. As a result of rushing it's release many elements were not tested or even included in the update of our much loved now screwed galaxy s4 's
Someone better get there act together and roll out a TESTED release to address all of these screw ups!

That's funny because as a senior member, your reply seemed neither helpful nor relevant to what I said about the Galaxy S4 being affected by the latest Jellybean 4.3 update (whether I posted on an outdated thread or not) The subject matter remains relevant because the Wi-fi over-scanning while connected is still very much a current issue.
Many users have complained about the numerous errors currently being recently experienced in the latest 4.3 update, many of which have now been announced on the Samsung support forums. I'm in the UK and I see you're in the US. that in itself could make a hell of allot of difference in the errors that UK users may be experiencing. I'm also on T-Mobile and that could also have implications to the version of Jellybean subversion that has been installed.
Telling me I should 'calm down' (just because you're not experiencing any issues with your phone) is not the sort of condescending remark expected from any senior member.

Bugs in 10.4.B.0.569 update

Even though we have finally received the 4.3 update from SONY,
it seems like shipped with some noticeable bugs.
It's better if we can mention the bugs we have encountered after the 4.3 update
1. ) SONY Select
As many people have reported this service is not working in either mobile broadband or wifi connections.
Only a error text is shown as "No network connection. Please try again later"
2.) NFC icon
It suddenly get disapeared while it's already activated by quick settings.
3.) Airplane mode
When the Airplane mode is turned on by power button menu, it cannot be turned off using the same menu since it's disabled.
I had to go to the settings menu and turn it off from there.
4.) Network mode switching
3G networking and LTE network mode switching does not happening correctly in automatically (sometimes).
work arround found :
Had to go to the network settings and disable the mobile data
turn on the airplane mode on and again turn it off
enable the mobile data again then it will correctly jump to LTE network type
5.) Battery bug
Battery suddenly dropped from about 40 % to 8% (without any downloaded applications.)
6.) Overheating
Phone is incredibly overheating while using the HSPA+ or LTE data connection.
with 4.2.2 i didn't had this much of overheating issue.
Please share your findings also :highfive:

1 - No, it is working fine since 2 days ago.
2 - No, this is a customization thing, if you flashed a firmware from a different region it may have been disabled. It is normal, you can re-enable it editing build.prop.
3 - No, it works fine on mine.
4 - No, i don't have this problem.
5 - It happened to me in the first two hours of installing the new firmware, but from 13% to 0% reducing itself in 1% increments every 2 seconds (and it turned itself off), it may be some kind of battery recalibration after installation, it hasn't happened again since then.
6 - I don't feel like it is overheating more than before.
I thing you should do a factory reset. I did it after 4.3 update and the only bugs i have found are:
1 - Progress bar overlaping text while installing applications
2 - Standalone wifi hotspot toggle widget not working (the one in the configurable toggles in notification area works fine)
3 - Bluetooth A2DP music streaming skips a lot in my BMW Car Infotainment system while not charging the phone. It could be some kind of energy saving feature on the bluetooth that it is screwing things up. It worked 10 times better when i was in Android 4.2.2
cheers.

Fixing Google play services battery drain

Ok so my phone would die after around 5-6 hours of doing nothing, I found by going to device administrators and disabling "android device manager" and then going to settings > apps > all > Google play services. You are now able to force stop the app. After doing this I have now have no battery drain and this don't seem to cause any other issues

I believe that you did not fully understand what the OP has stated in his first post. I think he might be on to something. I'm going to test it on my phone and (if I don't forget) I will report back. Turning off location for ADM would actually be a better solution for me than turning off location as a whole.
ok, and what I do at all is Setting > Locations > Google Location Reporting > TURN OFF Location reporting , TURN OFF Location history .
and the problem just fixed ..

Toggling 'Location reporting' also toggles location reporting to Google Device Manager I guess.
For me disabling google services helped
On xperia z disabling network and wifi location, location history, some other stuff and some google services increased the battery life significantly. See pics.

Ok so my phone would die after around 5-6 hours of doing nothing, I found by going to device administrators and disabling "android device manager" and then going to settings > apps > all > Google play services. You are now able to force stop the app. After doing this I have now have no battery drain and this don't seem to cause any other issues

this!!! Sony broke our phones with latest update.
It didn't occur before, it must be sony, not google. Otherwise every phone in the world would have this problem.

I am beginning to think the same thing. I have a friend who has a Nexus 5 and never had this issue with any of the KitKat versions.

Don't you remember the last time you said this and people linked you to various examples of other devices suffering battery drain because of Google Play Services? Or do you just like finding reasons to complain about Sony?
I suggest that you'll be better off posting complaints (valid or not) or suggestions in the Sony support forum for the Xperia Z in future, where someone from Sony will actually see it.

There are many, many more examples if you just do a quick Google search. It isn't the best situation, but it is not Sony's fault.

It's just the powered cradle for the motorbike. Had few rides and in between used for 50 min google maps in a car without charging.
For me the problem would always creep back after a few days of use.
The way I fixed it was to disable location reporting, ads and automatic backup. I then rebooted into recovery and wiped Dalvik and Cache.
Now it's been over a week and Google Play Services doesn't even appear in the top list of battery usage anymore.
Hope this helps.

I just noticed the manage space button under play services where you can force stop it. Is this a kitkat feature? I never had access to it before. It actually crashed on me after I,cleared the cache the first time.. Weird
I have a few questions (sorry if they're unrelated):
1. If I disable location reporting, will google's android device manager be able to locate my phone?
2. If GPS is disabled in the action bar, are apps still able to use location reporting? If so, do they use wifi triangulation or do they turn on gps temporarily?

You are wrong, as it happens on other phones sometimes (very rare issue) when it is in all Sony phones updated to 4.4.2

It's not necessarily on EVERYONE's phones. I didn't have this before and when GPlay Services updated I did. So no, it's not Sony's fault. Some people just don't understand that Sony does not have control over Google Play Services and what it does.
I also have access to both a Z1 and a Z2, both of which are running 4.4.2 and just disproves your claim even more.

Samsung Push Service

Are you guys disabling this using Package Disabler? Just curious if it can improve battery in any way?
I disabled it and got almost 7 hours of sot my first day.

You can disable it, but certain core functions may not work. Samsung Pay for example.

I can confirm that Samsung pay works with it disabled. From what I understand, this has something to do with push notifications for Samsung apps. I'm not sure exactly which apps, or what functions break if this is disabled (I don't use many Samsung apps), but pay does work. Push Services was a known battery killer on the s6, so I disabled it on my s7 as well. No ill effects yet.

Would you mind sharing what you disabled in total? I've shut down a nice long list of apps, but only got a marginal bump in battery. Of course it doesn't help that the radio shipping with the S7 Edge is worse than the recent Note 5 updates. Back to relying on WiFi Calling at the office again. Plus WiFi doesn't automatically reconnect if I walk out of range and back in, it waits for me to turn the screen on.
I left mine on and still get 7-7hr 30 mins of SOT

This is my list, which did not give me the bump in battery life I was hoping for either. I'm also seeing the same wifi and radio issues as well
Is this a separate app to disable them all?
NVM I bought and took out some annoying apps its a nice sweet app!

Thanks for the list.
I'm hoping the other issues get ironed out with the March or April updates that should be coming within 4-6 weeks. On the up side however, WiFi Calling connects instantly on this phone and I've yet to get double/triple/quadruple messages arriving.

Well that's good. Silver linings and all that.
I found out that disabling the Wifi Scanning and Bluetooth Scanning options did help a bit with battery, but the issue I have with turning them off is finding another trigger for some of my Tasker profiles. Using GPS-Based location is more battery hungry than the Wifi near state, and Net-Based location and Cell Near State aren't reliable enough due to poor signal at work, so I'm stuck using the Wifi near, which requires Wifi scanning to be on.
At this point I'm waiting for an update or root to be able to squash this issue. Still happy with the phone though. I know that early software is often buggy, and this phone still has the best hardware in the game, so once the OS is updated/rooted, all will be well.

Absolutely! Samsung caught a lot of crap over the years (their own fault with early TouchWiz), but a complete 180 has occurred and I'm more than content to use their phones for a long time coming.

Agreed. I find that Samsung phones generally have the best hardware available, even if the software is slightly lacking, which I find is the case much less nowadays. But since the hardware is boss, the phone is worth a buy since most software issues can be addressed and fixed with custom ROMs. Best of both worlds IMO.
