Wave to wake - X Play Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm interested in buying the Moto X Play.
I know that on Moto X Play there's no Wave to wake function as there're not special IR sensors.
But, On my Moto X 2013 there were no IR sensors too - and it worked fine on 4.4.4.
I found that it's possible making this feature work again using Tasker on 5.1:
https://plus.google.com/+DenHil/posts/g1bwKznW2No
I'd like to know whether it'll work on Moto X Play too?

Any chance that someone try it out on his Moto X Play?

Wave to wake works on all phones. It uses the prox sensor and far as I know its build in every phone. Works with cm and stock roms. For stock rom I use macrodroid to enable it,but tasker should also work.

Thanks,
But whether it's going to work same as the Moto X 2014 / Style? or different behavior

I only owned a nexus 4 and moto g 4g and it all worked the same. In macrodroid you can adjust this by choosing different settings like : proximity far or near, slow wave or fast wave etc.

I owned a Moto G 2013, the feature worked good and removed on 5.1.
Now I have a Droid Turbo which I broke the screen on- which has this feature in the stock system.
it's to expensive now ordering a new screen - so I decided to by 2nd hand MOTO X Play for now.
Currently I'm using an old HTC One S - it's kind of possible enabling such behavior with apps such as acDisplay, Wave to Unlock, Auto screen on, etc. - but the battery drain is insane with them.
Using the method that I mentioned in the first post isn't working.
Generally in the devices that have this feature in the stock system have AMOLED display (most of them), extra-IR sensors and also an extra processor which taking care of sensors behavior.
If you'll try to use this feature on device that doesn't have the above then three things will happen:
1. You're going to use the main IR (proximity) sensor
2. You're going to use the main CPU for getting the data from the sensor
3. As the display isn't AMOLED then the system have to turn the whole display on a not specific pixels
Those will lead to extra battery drain.
Here's again my question, when using Tasker (if it works?) is the behavior on MOTO X Play is same as on other phones that have that feature in the stock system?
And also is the behavior of Moto Display is same (turning the screen on from waving = turning the screen on from taking the phone in the hands)?

Because of this prox standby drain I always use moto display instead. Moto display uses motion sensors and is very battery friendly. I think it works almost the same like the moto x you are talking about and only difference is it uses some other sensors instead.
Edit: Touching the device puts the screen on and i dont know how,but it also works using a flip cover.Maybe because of a magnet sensor. Not sure but it works .

If its all about your battery life (sot) i should run to the shop. If you keep you screen brightness low and adjust the stock governor settings you can reach over 10 hours sot with light usage using greenify and aggressive doze enabled.

it's all about doing the "wave over the phone" gesture and getting the screen turned on with the clock and the circle in the middle without draining my battery in few hours

Few hours? If i use the proximity sensor i still get around 7/8 hours. It drains around 5% battery a day and not a big deal for the battery shipped with the x play.

Try Glance Plus app. I currently using this one in favour of Moto display. It has proximity sensor detection built in.

why compromising on feature that originally worked on Moto X 2013 4.4.4 and removed on 5.1?
I found that there's a modded MotoActions.apk that I can install and use the "chop twice for flash light" feature which removed also in Moto X Play.
So the Wave to wake feature can be brought back, as it already worked in Moto X 2013

Maybe you can better buy a moto x instead if your looking for exact the same features, because its not the same device. You can also think the huge battery is a great compromise for the functions you are missing and can be replaced using other apps and sensors, but the battery aint. Just my opinion.

I will buy Moto Z
But for now I have this device...
"Buy Moto X if you want XXX function" is kind of "iOS" style answer
As I mentioned
1. Motorola removed this feature on Moto X 2013 on 5.1,
2. Moto X 2013 don't have extra IR sensors
3. There's modded MotoActions.apk which brings the "chop twice for flash light" back to Moto X Play
The conclusion is simple - it's possible bringing the "wave to wake" feature to the MotoActions.apk - just need a developer to do it (Same as with "chop twice")

What answer do you wanna hear ? Seems like you are looking for an answer that you already know. All functions you mentioned are working on a similar way. Camera is double twist or press power button twice to take a quick picture and the moto display also works perfect and doent drain the battery, but you just want the exact same features on a different device and telling me its an ios style answer. Maybe i can place the ir sensors in the mxp with some special magic for you , if thats what you wanna hear.

If you want "wave to wake", use something like "Gravity Screen" from the Play Store (or any of the other dozen alternatives) or a custom ROM that has it baked-in. I'm using the unofficial Temasek's "Ambient Display" and its options for it and that's been working very well for me.
I'm sure there's battery drain but it seems pretty minimal, I don't even consider it.
BTW, comparing this situation to the X 2013 doesn't work - that device has completely different guts (SoC/chipset, screen tech, etc.) than the MXP. When I was on stock I've tried the modified MotoActions.apk before and the chop-chop was terrible, not even close to how smoothly it worked on the 2013 which would be another indication that things are different under the hood. Even the Temasek ROM has it (double chop gesture) and I have it turned off because it just doesn't work well.

Moto X product line specs and features discussion and feedback

I am starting this discussion for all the Moto X fans out there to have a say about their favorite features, the features they want and the features they would like changed (or changed back)
The main motivation on my judgement on features below is that I am considering the Moto X to be the most user friendly daily driver. All round phone that is not specialized, does everything well and nothing exceptionally great. Especially for the urban lifestyle (some may call it plastic or tin canned).
Size
The best thing I like about the 2013 Moto X is the 4.7 inch display, this gave the 2013 Moto X the reputation of the best one hand operated phone experience back at 2013 and I believe it should stay, 4.7 to 5 inch is perfect size.
It can also grow in size as different people would like different thing, but in my opinion to keep the one hand operation miracle alive, Motorola needs to keep a version of Moto X with 4.7-5 inch
Screen resolution
I am very happy with the 720, especially that the full HD screen eats up battery. I don't see any benefit of having HD display, even for media or gaming. Battery life is a crucial factor compared to minimal media quality.
Let's face it, media high quality is a nice option on tablet or a bigger device, watching media on the phone for most people (as I have noticed) is when you're waiting for the doctors at the clinic (who don't really know what the word appointment means) or on the bus etc. If I want to watch a video and enjoy it in high quality, I would watch it on a tablet or a laptop, or using my Moto X to cast it to a higher resolution device.
Battery life
Now we're talking, battery life is one of the most important features of the 2013 Moto X and I would give up a lot to keep it lasting a day at least, I would like Motorola to work on it, make it better. Along with the screen size, battery life has motivated me big time to buy the Moto X.
Wireless charging
A nice feature that would make the experience using Moto X even better, however not necessary, I got used to carrying a charger with me, or a decent power-bank, so while wireless charging can help on the work desk or at home, it's almost useless for people on the move (like myself) especially that it takes much longer to fully charge the phone
Touchless controls
Here is one of the best features I have ever seen in a phone. Really, well done Motorola. The ways to enhance this was already implemented on the new one, by customizing the trigger phrase, Motorola has shown it cares/listens to customers. Also the fact that the command list is expanding to cover more than Google voice.
If Motorola want to perfect this, they can allow other apps to use the Touchless controls by providing SDKs to third-parties (or a similar technique).
Enhancing experience and reducing time for repeated tasks
Shake to open camera, NFC accessories, Bluetooth trusted devices unlock are the main features allowing this.
The Motorola Skip is great, keep providing ways to address user frustration points, and time consuming repeated tasks (such as unlocking phone.) This phone addresses the most critical time consuming repeated tasks correctly. Motorola, we want more of those please.
Can you guys think of anything else other than Camera, unlock phone as repeated time consuming tasks? Let me (and Motorola) know.
SD slot
One of the features I wish Moto X had is an expandable memory, I have replaced most of the devices I use with Moto X and that's supposed to be the idea. Replacing alarm, car GPS, Camera mp3 player and more. This is a feature that I would love for Motorola to consider. Many people like myself have a big music library and it's a shame that a great device like the Moto X lacks this.
Camera
The Camera in the Moto X isn't that great, we all know that. Even the 2014 Moto X doesn't have a good one, but I can live with that, camera is not of a great significance to me, and for a all-round device it should not be a great camera. In conclusion, the camera there is sufficient
Style.
The Moto Maker is great, however it has a limitation, the design of the phone itself can enchance or kill the Moto Maker customization. I personally prefer the 2013 Moto X style better than the new one.
Water/Weather Proofing
The Moto X is supposed to be Nano-coated, so it's water proof to a degree, the touch screen cannot be used under water or under rain (even a few drops.) The urban lifestyle is all about being fit, sporty and outdoors. A proper water/weather proofing would be a great feature to consider
Price
No need to say anything here. It's reasonably priced for most parts of the world.
Everyday repeated tasks handling
This is where the Moto X product line excels. Here is a list of the features we love and notes about how to enhance them:
Touchless control: Great! I have already discussed this above.
Assist: I love it, especially for driving mode, however, Motorola needs to consider more ways to trigger the mode. I don't like the driving mode automatically on when on the bus or in a car which I am not driving. Triggering on only when connected to a specific bluetooth device can make this specific to my car which will be great. There are more ways to enhance this as well, please share your opinion.
Skip: I love skip unlock, even though some people lose it a lot, but it's only $10, which makes it easily replaced when lost.
Trusted devices: needs some work, you need to unlock the device once before the trusted device unlock work, very useful when in the car.
Shaking the phone for camera: no complains there, works great, and very useful indeed.
Notifications: Adding the feature to view multiple notifications when the phone is locked for the 2014 version is the update we were looking for.
The old 2013 Moto X should have the software features updates as per:

Update:
Here is a list of guides for the impatient ones (like myself):
How to get 2014 Moto X MotoVoice on a 4.4.4 android 2013 Moto X
I am hoping that motorola adds more in this category, enhancing the user experience by reducing the time for repeated time consuming tasks is what makes the Moto X a great every day driver. Anything else you want added/discussed, please let me know.
http://www.androidpolice.com/2014/0...m-launch-phrases-for-the-new-moto-x-and-more/
Update: According to Punit Soni, "all the software will come to our existing users too (as long as the Hardware allows it)." So it's safe to assume that the original Moto X will get this feature – could be soon, but it may not show up till the L update is available. Now we play the waiting game.

AFAIK, there has not been a solid confirmation of which specific features will be ported, but everything I've read seems to indicate that the two features you mention will be made available in updates for the 2013 Moto X. I believe it is happening.
That's good news, I prefer the old Moto X to the new one for many reasons, but would like to have the software updates. Thanks mate
I would like the new features but I don't care for the white/light blue touchless control screen.. I prefer the black/dark and amoled battery saving version that we have currently.

I think I will probably start a thread about the Moto X features old/new and what users are expecting in the next one
Isn't this such a thread
Dont forget about the moto actions features that let you silence incoming calls with a wave. On the new X it uses the ir sensors to detect movement but i feel like our proximity sensor could do the job just fine. There is a mod that ports these over unofficially but an offcial update would be nice. It would definitely let me know, as a motorola customer, they value me and my investment in their product. Which in turn would really bump up my overall experience with their product and would give them a leg up when it comes time for me to consider who to turn to for a new device.

I have a question about that ir sensor. What sensor does the moto x have for active display ? If I put my hand over the phone without touching it, active display comes up.

It's a proximity sensor on the old moto x. It detects if something is in front of it or not. The ir sensor is different and there's 4 of them as opposed to our 1 proximity sensor. Those are used in the new moto x for facial listening (the screen won't turn off if you're looking at it) and moto actions like activating moto display and silencing an incoming phone call.

I took a look at the Droid product line, which got my attention especially that the Droid Turbo is coming out soon. I love the battery life and wireless charging, but it's as ugly as the New Moto X. Not to mention that I cannot have it anyway as I am (like most most people outside the us) not a Verizon customer.

Double tap2wake and notification LED: Two things that would do the device super!

Guys.. I'm searching the web (mostly here in xda) to make those two features work on my device, but I can't find something!
Can't we do this awesome led under the earphone works as notification led?
Sent from my XT1092 using XDA Free mobile app
Why would you want those features when you have something better, Moto Display? Pick the phone up and it will light up the device, simply unlock it like usual; no need to explain notifications I believe.
It is redudant on the X, probably you're used to it from past devices or kernels you applied before.
I could see the light if you don't keep your phone near you, but just wave your hand over the phone, just the same as the knock I had on my G3. I still had to unlock it after the knock. Just do the wave and unlock like rogeriorp said.
Moto Display is a battery hog and doesnt work right half the time. I disabled it long ago and my battery life doubled.
If ur Moto X is rooted then u can use certain apps from the Play Store to gain access to the notification light (I think one is called Light Flow). Also Im pretty sure some Devs got double tap to wake working on the Moto G so im sure it could work for ur X as long as ur rooted.
Search moto x led in the play store
If you want a smartphone, get Android. If you want a TOY, get iphone
I do like moto display but I miss the notification light. Just got my replacement phone today so I am going to use it for a little bit and then unlock the bootloader and root so I can mess with it a bit.
I never had a phone with double tap to awake but that is a nice feature, but as has been said if you use the moto feature all you need to do is wave your hand.

So you're basically killing the so called best phone feature of the X line up useless, and disabled it for battery life? That is not what the Moto X is about, it is about the user experience. I read it here that people thought it would be a Nexus with extra features, but don't like them after a while and decide to use it as a Nexus device. I am fine with that, to each their own, but it is enfuriating. How would you call this phone a success if not by it's unique features out of the box, with design made to work with it with sensors and everything.. instead you're killing it in favor of battery, like what? Really? :|
That is probably the beauty of android, everyone uses the device as they see fit but I don't see the brightness of killing a phone's features as good as this over standard stuff.
I like ambient display more. But some of you dont have that as an option since you may not be on 5.0. To each their own. I would take battery life over a feature I wouldn't use any day.
I am rooted but nothing seems to work, neither the notification led, nor the double tap!
Sent from my XT1092 using XDA Free mobile app
I find the opposite. Moto Display is better on batter life than ambient display in Lollipop. Not to mention just works better. Plus I also think it is one of the unique and best features of Moto X. Much better than double tap to wake...just pick up your phone and slide...done. or pick up my phone...check the time, put it back in my pocket and never have to turn the display on. Awesomeness!

Having both a xt1095 and a onePlus one I can say dt2w is just better. I find my self having to wave my thumb over the it sensor trying to wake it again. Its a PiTA one handed. Alternatively with dt2w your thumb is already on the screen.
I wouldn't mind it if I could just wave the phone over my leg screen down to trip the sensors but that doesn't work really either.
Worse yet you swipe down to unlock after swiping up on lollipop notification screen....Moto has work to do. Honestly my X is going to get benched till updates roll out. It has so many bugs on lollipop that I'm disappointed.

I'd hardly call Moto Display a battery hog. Just like the 2013 X, it uses a low power core so it's designed to not use much battery. I did an experiment when I first got the phone and it literally added MAYBE an extra 1% of standby battery drain in a 24 hour period. I think you might have had other issues, honestly.

And that's why I'm staying on KitKat. So many people are way too quick to update just because they want to have the latest software for no other reason than having the latest software. I actually had someone on xda tell me I don't deserve my Nexus 5 because I'm keeping it on KitKat. Sorry, but I like my phone to just work, and KitKat works beautifully on both my X and N5. Just toss a few Xposed modules in there and I'm a happy camper.
I've had such a different experience. I updated to lollipop on day one and have had no major issues what so ever. Battery life is great (better than kitkat) and the phone is super fast. I really think it is a user experience and depends on what apps you have on the phone as well as how the phone is used. I love the Moto X and honestly have bought several phones this year. HTC M8, Galaxy S5, LG G3, Xpeira Z3 and the X. I kept combing back to the Moto X...in fact I just sold all of them and kept the Moto...just feels better in hand and all around the best phone out of that bunch for me. I do wish it had the G3 camera on it though...that was the best camera of the bunch...surprisingly I thought the Z3 would have been the best camera but G3 performed better for me. I really hope Moto can issue an update fixing the poor camera quality. That is the one thing that really does bug me.

You dont find that Moto display turns on when u dont need it? I had mine sitting on the table in front of me and randomly the screen would turn on for no reason. Happened time and time again. Plus if u use a PIN then u need to bypass Moto Display then the Android lock screen, so its like having 2 lock screens over lapping eachother. I dont know how u could think using all the sensors on front would lead to less battery usage. Ambient works way better for me. Whatever, not like I care how anyone uses their phone. So happy you guys love Moto Display! :|
If someone of you have had an LG G2 or G3 would understand why double tap and notification led is way better than this moto display or the other feature on lollipop!
In most cases I leave my phone sitting in the table and I'm some meters away, I see the led notify me and go to the table just double tap the screen and I'm ready!
Not to mention that curved back that makes it difficult to use the phone when it sits in the table.. I don't want to take the phone to my hand each time I want to type something, I want it on the table!
You'll tell me now.. "why you bought this phone??"
Honestly.. even if I don't like much of the features that "doesn't have" I love the feeling of this phone, I like it very much!!

I had a G3 and I really don't miss tap to wake as I can just wave my hand over the display and get the same result. I do miss tap to sleep though. If I decide to go back to nova launcher, I know there's apps that lock your phone when you set double tap to that app.

Also, since the phone has a rounded back, you can just tap the phone and it rocks causing the screen to turn on. Sometimes when I am playing Xbox and my phone is on the table in front of me I just lightly kick the table and the vibration turns the screen on. I have Nova and use the double tap to lock, however, doing this somehow makes the Smart Unlock not work. If I lock by the side button, then turn the phone on I can use my face to unlock. If I double tap Nova (or use any app that turns the screen off), then turn the phone on I can't use my face to unlock. It is very weird and not sure why.

I was under the impression that amibent display wakes up the snapdragon, while moto display uses a secondary low power chip, which should save some battery. Moto display uses three IR emitters and one IR sensor, those should consume minute levels of current.
Getting through two lockscreens does kind of suck though.
If double-tap-to-wakeup was important for me then I had an OnePlusOne invite and I would have bought that which is way cheaper than MotoX and has got better specs on the paper. But I handed that invite to someone else and bought the MotoX instead.
But I wanted the MotoX for what its offering and now I have got so much used to of the 'touchless' Moto features that I end up replicating same gestures on other phones I come across and then it takes a bit to realize that the others aren't smart enough like MotoX, Even an iPhone costing twice the money feels ancient tech in front of the MotoX. earlier I had complains with the camera but now I even have started liking the camera also for the quicker and smarter gesture based response, afterall what is utility of a mobile camera if you can't access it on time. :cyclops:
I have praises for the MotoX becasue its got few features which suite to me. It doesn't mean that its the only best smartphone, there are other phones as well which have some other distinct features preferred by other people, just a matter of preference, but be careful while choosing.
Those who are facing issues on Lollipop, I would suggest factory reset and clean start after the upgrade, then reset/retrain the Moto features.
If you install any of the custom roms for the Moto X, the light will function as a notification light. Since you seem to not like Moto Display, this seems like a viable option for you.

My First Impressions

Well, i just got my Moto X Play 32gb . And from less than 24h Using it, my first impressions are :
Battery : Looks very promising, it's settling down , but from a little usage you already feel like it will make thru the day easily , my mourning starts with me unplugging it, and wile making and eating my breakfast i check my e-mails, messengers , news , videos etc.. using about 1h screen time , then i put it back to charge for about 30 min. before i go out, and my Moto X 2gen and Galaxy S6 edge usually was around 70 something % after that first usage. The Moto X Play today was 91 % before plug it in , 1h 04 m of SOT .
Charging IT : Yesterday when i unboxed my Play X , it came with 60% Battery , my X 2 gen was around 70 % , i putted both on charging , both with the same cable and turbo charger , same model etc.. and the X play hit 100% 10 to 15 minutes earlier than X 2gen. so looks like it won't take forever to charge that massive battery with the Turbo Charger . One more thing : Moto X play now tells you when it's turbo charging , so now i will be able to test if those 3rd party chargers that says 2.4a or quick charge will get that message.
Display : With that extra size i definitely can see less resolution , i'm comparing with moto X 2gen, not SG6 edge. But after a few minutes using it you don't even notice anymore. The colors seem less evident, less contrast , but much better brightness and better whites. Active display lost the ir sensors so , no waving to see time. and the motion sensitivity is toned down with longer time before acting , so in the car the thing lights up less times although when at dark you see the whole display bright even the black part gets grey (typical from LCD panels ) But they should set the brightness lower for the active display , regardless what you are using for the screen ( i prefer more to the high brightness side , with amoled i go full , LCD - 80% ) .
SoC : Don't know if the processor is the cause, but i can fell some sluggishness when using multiple apps or switching apps i am tempted to say that it feels weaker than Moto X 2 gen . Both are still better than my Galaxy S6 edge tough.
Camera: Did little testing, but , pictures are definitely better but still fell like the same motorola camera, little lost to focus sometimes, little bit slow responses and movement , not a deal breaker.
Functions : Don't know if i didn't make the settings right but, i lost the ability to " chop " to flash light , only have the twist to open the camera , and it seems to miss sometimes , like it is less sensitive , unlike my moto x 2gen that rarely misses it.
Basic Stuff: Call quality and signal strength seems to be the same , and by the same i mean good . The loudspeaker sounds as loud as before, still mono, the stereo speakers for the X style would be more for quality i think ,than loudness.
............... Will update more later .
I would like to know the average SOT from 100 to 10% after you installed all the apps that you normally use with all the push notifications enabled.
- Can you please perform a multitouch test ?
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=multitouchpro.tests&hl=de
LG G4 had issues there, just to make sure.
- How would you compare the performance of the phone to the Nexus 5 (in case you have a N5 or a friend of yours) ?
Please no benchmark test rather then real word testing
Thank you in advance

I will post , my phone are always the worst for battery life coz i do go around the city very much and we have a lot of speed cameras, so i use an app that turns gps on when i'm driving, so my day to day average on gps usage of battery is around 2 to 3h . I do a lot of Bluetooth streaming from spotify and some google maps to get around, high brightness, lot and lots os instant messages . So if a get thru the entire day without charging the phone will be great and for most people will get much better results, normally i always keep it charged, i do have car charger and power banks, but for today i will not use it to see how far it goes.

Well, i had a nexus 5, but it's been long time since then. But even if for multitask the Moto X Play performance was lower than nexus still worth the extra juice , and better camera.

I'd be optimistic about general performance, considering it's still on early release software and it's already faster than a gs6 edge
Apart from the missing IR, do you feel like it's a big step back from the x 2014 in handling moto features? Or is it the same (great) experience?

Well, i don't know if it's actually faster than SG6 edge, but it sure feels like it is, touchwiz fault i guess. yeah i do miss the IR sometimes too. For me it feels like a little step back in those great features motorola brought to us, maybe they are saving some of those for Moto X style so the style get more appealing. I'm all in for the style except for the screen size , i'm still adjusting to the X play.
Here we are, my first full battery cycle . I'm sure you will get better SOT than me, my gps usage was about 3h , spotify , bluetooth , android wear, high brightness , apps updates , downloads etc.. and this is what i got.
Safe to say you are a power user lol. Thats pretty impressive if you ask me.

No chop twice to flash? That's strange, during the firsts hands on (right after the presentation) they showed it.
Anyway, could you please post a screenshot of the sensor page of CPU-Z?

Yes it does, i think its used to activate the camera twist thing. FM radio only with the earphones , but yes it does.

Yeah, strange, i did a full restore today and didn't restore any backup, fresh start , still missing . When you go to the Moto Gestures on X 2 gen, it shows the animation for twist to camera and chop to flash, in moto x play it only shows twist to camera, and it's harder to activate it on Moto x Play than it is on moto x 2 gen . I'm playing now with both phones, and X play definitely shows a little lag typing with Swift keyboard and scrolling down the notification panel , i'm noticing faster responses from moto x 2 gen. Will test the CPU-Z sensors later.

Someone else posted a screenshot of CPU-Z on this forum. The phone does not have a gyroscope. The gestures are activated via a specific dual accelerator (like on the Moto G and the Moto E 2015.)

Well, i think they need to update then, coz Moto X play is missing some other features too , like the chrome extension app from motorola.
See the screen shots from Moto Action on Moto X 2 gen , and the avaliable action for Moto X Play.
This might sound crazy but I have yet to see the chop twice for flash on the Play and also if you look at the white model of the Style and Play you dont see the blue IR Sensors on the Play which would suggest you wouldnt have the wave to activate display features.
And also if you look at this pic theres no chop sensor?

help me please
help me, deleted unintentionally stock rom moto x play system! I need a stock rom zip!
BTW if anyone knows the G3 daily performance, how would you compare both?
G3 is my first Android device (excluding Wildfire as it was an awful experience) and I'm used to WP smoothness. With G3, I was generally happy with the performance but alt-tabbing/dealing with multiple wasn't as smooth.
Do you think the performance on X Play is on par or better? with performance I mean UI fluidity, lag, stutter, app switch quickness etc. I don't really care with benchmarks/games/first loading time.
801 might be stronger then 615 but the software optimization might create wonders

The play definitely does not have the four ir sensors. Anyway it has a "chop chop" sensor. On CPU-Z is listed as "chop chop gesture" (the last item in the list). Probably it they will update moto actions to support it.

Moto Display Notification Issue

I have noticed that when I get a notification while the screen is locked, the notification pulsates or "breaths"' (as Motorola calls it) for only about 3 minutes and then stops. I thought it was supposed to continue to breath and show me the notification until I dismissed it. Is this normal or is there maybe a setting I have screwed up?
Same here but I guess it's a bug idk
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Really don't know how I feel about the notification system on this phone. I would prefer and LED notification light, and this phone has one, it's just not usable. I've got a 6P on order and have some decisions to make.
Sent from my XT1575 using Tapatalk
Mine does this too. I'm guessing they made a few tweaks since the move to LCD. Although I haven't owned an X before so I'm not sure if the older models did the same thing, or continued to 'breathe' until dismissed.
I think It's normal. Same thing happens on the moto x 2014.
They probably figure with the way most people eat, sleep, and poop with their phones in their hands that nobody is going to go more than three minutes without checking it anyway, so why keep it breathing longer than that?
consider the battery usage I think .
Same here. Hopefully we'll get Lightflow working with this at some point.

It works now if you're rooted, in case you weren't aware.
Well, kind of... All you can do is have the led turn on. No flashing yet, but it does help quite a bit.

Yeah, I am rooted and aware. By working, I meant flashing. No worries. I'm sure it will be sorted eventually. Heck, even if they could get the front camera flash to light up for notifications, that would be nice too.

Hahaha, didn't see your stats before I replied (xda app)
I used Flash Alerts 2 for the front flash but it's way to bright for my liking and it just flashes the led a predetermined number of times, as opposed to actually controlling it like Lightflow.
My moto X 2014 and moto X style work exactly same way. The display doesn't stay on permanently when notification comes on. It lights up, pulsates and then dims and goes of until you either pick up the device or wave your hand in front of ambient sensors to check notification.
Your phone if working completely as it should do.

Does the "notification pulsing" on the moto x 2014 really goes off after about 3 minutes??? I cannot believe it, since it uses AMOLED as the 2013 Moto X too... And I am owning a Moto X 2013 and I love the Moto Display Feature on it.
On the Moto X 2013 the function is much much much better than on the Style... The brightness of the notification is much higher. The duration of the notification is longer and it pulses constantly every ~5s instead of ~10s... And not for just 3min.. It pulses for hours... as long as you take the device in your hand! Like a normal Notification LED would also do!
So the change of the display type from AMOLED to IPS LCD is a big step backwards imho... And please tell me that this 3min barrier is a bug, because if not, its absolutly useless and definitly a reason to send my moto x style back.

But the moto display works regardless after the timeout. As soon as you wave your hand over the screen it will spring it to life or even pick up the device will spring moto display to life.
The 2014 & 2015 versions work the same way identically regardless of amoled or lcd.
Yes but I dont want always to wave over the device... When I look at the phone I want to see: Are they notifications or not. With my X 2013 it works like a charm... So thats why I am pretty disappointed.
i have tryied the lightflow paid app for test,,, in a weak i noticed that my battery was going down fast... so i uninstalled the lightflow and tryied to go back to moto display.... updated moto software etc... checked all the configs i could... and still nothing.... so now.... my moto display is not working at all.... does not show any icon... and does not reconize my had going near it..... anyway to fix it? tnks :/

Bringing Moto X features over to the S5

I'm coming to the S5 from the original Moto X, and there are a lot of features I really don't want to leave behind.
From what I can tell, the S5 doesn't have any kind of "Always listening mode" that lets you launch Google Now when the screen is off through a voice command. I'm still looking to see how to get that to function correctly witout draining all the battery. But what I would really like to have again is wave to wake and active/moto display.
Is there a way if I'm rooted to change a config file or something for the "Air wake up" feature? Right now it's a few seconds of holding your hand in front of the proximity sensor on the front to turn on the screen. But is there an app out there or a way to go into /sys to tailor that to how I want it to work? Or a ROM that does it?
Same thing for an Active/Moto display. The S5 has an AMOLED, so there's no reason why it should turn on the entire screen.

Active Display requires more than just a screen, a controller is needed. S5 lacks it.

Touch Wiz is pretty bad honestly and I wouldn't want to use it again. I ended up going with a CM build (AICP) (Rooting and unlocking isn't that hard on it) which helps alot. Stock Marshmallow has a lot of the moto features baked in, and CM adds even more. In total though, I still miss the Moto X, but they never really updated the design past the 2014 version.
After getting past the initial software issues, the S5 is great. If you're getting it new, the processor still holds up, camera isn't bad (although doesn't show as much detail in low light as current gen devices), and having an SD slot and extra battery is awesome.

Thanks, appreciate the feedback! I have CM on my X now and would also want on s5. I think the version to get is the g900f. Know if I should update stock to the latest software before the CM attempt or does it not matter?
Better battery and better camera will be appreciated. I like active display on X but led notification should be just as useful. I think the overall size is what I'll miss most. The 13 x is just so easy to use one handed.
Were you happy with performance compared to X once you moved to CM?
I was waiting to get a pixel but just can't bring self to spending over $800 on a phone.

The root and bootloader unlock guides here are pretty solid. From what I remember, you have to be on a PB1 bootloader to unlock correctly, which is flashed via Odin. But I don't recall all of the details.
CM 13 has active display that works with the S5's AMOLED, but it's not quite as smooth/intuitive as the X, as the X had a dedicated chipset just for its Moto Display. That said, it does work in the same way, and I've found that it's a better notification system than the LED light. Haven't checked to see if it's killing my battery life yet.
Those are the two biggest pros/cons. The performance is better on the S5. even with stock TW. It's a faster processor and even more so once TW is removed. The screen is better too, with a higher brightness output and better speakers. Just overall better hardware.
But the S5 doesn't look as good or feel as good in hand as the X. You really notice how well designed the X is and how great it feels in hand with the subtle curve in the back and the quality build construction and material when you hold the S5 which is just a slab with rounded edges. But that's the same for a lot of devices, not just the S5.
And for the Pixel, similar to what happened to the 5x and 6p, they will probably come down in price in a few months. Also similar to last gen devices, there will be a lot of software updates in the next few months to work out all the issues with N and performance enhancements. I don't really see a reason to upgrade just yet. (especially when the S5 still holds up well)
