[Q] A question for the T-mobile data plan.

I am considering getting a Samsung Vibrant these days. There is one thing that bother me a lot.
I am a student from China. And I am getting a prepaid SIM from T-mobile without any kind of plan right now for the price reason.
I was wondering if I got a unlocked Samsung Vibrant from eBay and use it on the T-mobile network, do I have to pay for the data plan?
The thing is I owned a AT&T Fuze before and everything works fine on the T-mobile network except for the 3G. That's okay for me cuz I don't use 3G anyway. But there is one time that my friend who is on AT&T network borrow my Fuze for couple days, and AT&T just added the data plan for it automatically. My friend try to call the staff in AT&T and they said that since HTC Fuze is a smart phone from AT&T, it require a data plan so he cannot cancel it. And they can tell when he insert the SIM card and AT&T will get the IMEI from him automatically.
I just wondering will the same thing happen in T-mobile? 30$/month is way to much for me.
BTW, there is another question for you guys. There is a lot of unlocked Galaxy S on eBay, which is nice. I was wondering how they get it unlocked? Can I get them unlocked right in the "carrier shop"? Or there is other ways that I can get the unlocked code?

You might have to spoof the IMEI, you're in the same boat as my friend. He wants to use his old Sidekick plan with the phone but since's it's not a Sidekick he can't use the data at all because they know he's using a smart phone. Discussing IMEI's is not usually allowed on xda because it's illegal in some countries. I think that's your only solution though.
Wait a few months until the phone is more popular and you'll be able to easily find ways to spoof the IMEI. So far I have found none.

you have to have the android web spoofed or not. Without it TMO will lock you out of the market and mms

Why do you want to buy those expensive vibrants from ebay? I'd rather buy it from tmobile with 2 year contract, then cancel the plan and pay the ETF.
You can try to ask a t mobile online csr for the unlock code. Just tell him you will travel outside of us.

The best thing you can do OP is buy a Galaxy S i9000 off ebay. Tmobile only has the IMEI for the vibrants. That way you can pop your sim into the international version and they wont know.

Or get a sim card from mysimplemobile.com $60 a month for unlimited everything and it uses tmobile service. That is what I switched to and it works with my vibrant without an unlock.

Yup. You are right. I don't have the SSN right now so it's difficult for me to sign a contract.
The international version which is the i9000 is not bad. But I notice the price for the international version are significantly more expensive than the vibrant, for like 100-200$.
Anyway, thx for the suggestions.

So I might try to figure out another way to make it happen. lol

Im using the vibrant on tmo after upgrade. you can go online and remove the service. I paid for one month and canceled. you just change the type of phone to one not requiring android data plan ie a non android phone and it will let you remove it. I'm using it purely on wifi. just remember you will need it unlocked or w/ 3g to activate it initially or after wipe.

Ahh, Hmmm I paid the full 500 and today is the last day I can return mine. How much was the termination fee out of curiosity?
Another question, I have been using mine prepaid for almost a month now and TMO hasn't given me any trouble with it. (Aside from the reps in the store when I went to buy it).
Do you think I should bother to spoof my IMEI? Is that something that can get a fellow into trouble in this paranoid new world?
From what I've read everywhere else, it seems that TMO needs your business and won't give you any trouble using a prepaid sim in the phone. Whose to say that won't change in the future though.

You can usually get a contract from T-mob with your passport and your F1 student visa (assuming you're on a F1). You'll have to wait for about an hour in order for them to get approval from headquarters, but it works fine. Got my Vibrant that way, and while the charges are high at least you get unlimited data (as in really unlimited), so watching videos, listening to pandora and all that is a non-brainer..

Oh. I do have the F1 VISA with me. But I think I need to pay the deposit for don't have the SS#. At least my friend told me so.

That's the thing I don't understand. I paid $199 for my Vibrant on a 2-year contract. I have a $200 ETF, which means that I can cancel, and get the phone for $400. For a non-contract, I would have paid the full $500.
So what one can do is use the Even More for one month (which is +$10 from the Even More Plus). Then cancel, pay the ETF, and move to the same Even More Plus plan. Which would mean you would get no contract for $400.
Am I missing something?

is this really possible? amazon currently has the vibrant for $0.01 with a new contract. so in theory, one could sign a new contract, cancel and pay the ETF of $200, and get the phone for $200.01?? then sign up for an even more plus plan with no contract? (i also thought EM was $20/month more than EM+)
any input would be appreciated. this sounds too good to be true

You can buy a Vibrant and use it on prepaid you are just going to pay $500 for the phone. T-Mobile doesn't care they wont and can't charge you extra.
I would recommend checking out flexpay, you can get a monthly plan and get data if you want it. If not go with prepaid $15 a month gives you unlimited SMS and $0.10 a minute and just use wifi when you need data.
One last thing is do not recommend imei spoofing as its illegal here.

If you cancel with amazon within 6 months you pay an added 250$ ETF to them. So it would be 450$ all day.
I got mine from costco for $99 and canceled for 200$ after ETF. So $300 total. You also get a free cheap case car charger and bluetooth from them. Oh and no activation fee.

I am kinda confused by this.
So I am in a stick situation here.
My parents have a family plan and I bought a Vibrant adding onto their Even More plan, which requires the $5 add a line and also $30 data plan. But I kinda think I don't really need data plan/3G cuz I am mostly home and don't quite use 3G unless I am not home, which isn't too often. $30 is a little money wasting, so I was thinking of just getting my phone without contract by paying $500 and just adding to my parents' Even More plan without data plan to save money.
But since I got my phone from Costco for $200 (when did this $99 deal start? I got mine a week ago...), does that mean I can just cancel and save money instead?
Important question though: Is it really true that there is no Android Market access without Tmo smartphone data plan? Why is this so? If so, is there any way of my getting away with it in my case?

FYI, if you have an F1 visa or any student visa you can do a contact with T-Mobile with no deposit and no ss#. This is something relatively new to t-mo. Just go to any corporate store location and they should be able to set it up for you. It takes about 45 minutes to process. That is the only down side.

I don't have a data plan, and I can access the Android Market just fine via WiFi. With Wifi at home and at work and most every place in between, the data plan is really pointless for me

Well I went at a best buy to see a demo model but they didn't have one so I asked questions and asked if there was a difference and the person said no.If you buy with a contract, they give you an unlocked one for $200 but without one they will sell it for $529.. This worries me as if they have an imei code or whatever you won't be able to use the 5.99 or $10 internet plan where tmobile will block it.. Is this true and do you think tmobile will block the cheaper "dumb phone" data plan? Thanks!!

There is no difference in phones they are the same SKU but there are numerous threads about the T-zones plan, some say it works still some say it doesnt
do a quick search or check a couple pages back

I belive they're the same device. They're all unlocked. I don't remember which one, but Samsung, T-Mo or Google tweeted that the other day.
When I bought mine, without contract, it came out of the same stack of phones as the one the guy next to me who was on contract got his from.

The locked and unlocked phones are exactly the same. There is absolutely no difference between them. Dont listen to anyone who works for best buy.
If T-Mobile chooses to block Nexus S IMEIs from the t-zones or web2go data plans they will. Your contract would not prevent that.

The word is subsidized by the way.

In my case I bought an unlocked one in Bestbuy for $529.00 without a Plan. I have sim card from another carrier. When I installed it works for making calls but not Internet Data acces is available. I configure the APN and still doesn't work.
I did a test with a Rebelsimcard and then it works but just for a while and then it stops, it gets unregistered from the network. I removed the Rebelsimcard and it register but only for making calls. then if I wait a few minutes and then put again the rebelsimcard it start to works perfectly for while but it happens again.
Any ideas on what the problem it could be? How can I fix this permanetly?

Will Verizon activate?

I've heard that even though the Nexus 6 is compatible with Verizon CDMA, Verizon won't activate a phone that wasn't purchased through them AND even if you do manage to work around that (e.g. SIM swapping), they won't give you the $15/$25 line access discount for off-contract phones.
It's there any reason to believe the Moto X Pure will be treated differently by Verizon?
Currently, I'm on the the $60 Verizon loyalty plan, which doesn't have an off-contract discount, and I'm eligible for a subsidized upgrade n September. So I am leaving money on the table if I DON'T take advantage of a carrier-subsidized phone. However, I might be willing to give that up and pay full price for the Moto X Pure if it means I'll get an unlocked bootloader and software updates directly from Motorola without Verizon approval.
But the question remains: will Verizon cooperate, unlike with the unlocked Nexus 6?
FYI, I can't leave Verizon because it's the only carrier that gets service in my neighborhood.

They can be a **** and deny access to CDMA, but they can't lock you out of LTE. Personally, I've switched over to my Google voice number long ago, if Verizon decides to block the X Style, I'll just go data-only and abuse the **** out of my unlimited data plan.

True but until the Nexus 6 IMEIs were whitelisted, you had to call every month b/c the discount went away the next month.

Verizon tried that at first and the fcc told them to put them all in. Since it violates the terms when they won the spectrum auction a while back.
It's just like when verizon was supposed to unlock the GSM side of the phones and they weren't. The fcc stepped in and told them to.
Verizon is Ike a little kid. Trying to get away with whatever they can. But once the fcc warns them they have to follow or they will get there spectrum revoked.

Not sure why Verizon has this soup nazi stance since the total cost is better for them if someone uses their own device and still pays the fees for service. That means zero investment by Verizon, but their network is making the monthly revenue. The amount of money Verizon might generate with all of their bloat is a fraction of the subsidized cost they adsorb for new devices.
I have purchased devices outside of Verizon and have had no issues activating on the network. They were used Verizon devices though.

As a guy who will be coming off a 2-year unlimited data plan, I hope so! I'd like to continue with my UDP for as long as possible, and I'd really like to have this phone.
Assuming the Best Buy trick still works when/if a carrier version of this phone is released, I may have to wait for that.

Supposedly Verizon is getting rid of phone subsidies entirely so this may be your lat one. Motorola seems to have very good timing on this release as far as seeing the direction all carriers seem to be heading with phone subsidization.

I don't cruise the forums like I used to. I have a business plan through Verizon. I'll be coming off a LG G2 which was bought on contract if I move to the Moto X. If Verizon plays ball properly, does this mean I can ask for a lower monthly fee for my service?

It's not a big deal though. They are just going to operate on lease to own like T-Mobile does. With the subsidising, you still pay roughly $20 a month for your phone on contract. They are just adding visibility to that. So don't worry.

Can No Longer Buy Full-Price Phones from VZW and keep Unlimited Data.

The last phone I purchased directly from VZW was a full-price Note 2. To upgrade the phone, I went to VZW website, selected my full-price Note 4 and attempted to check out. However, to complete the checkout, VZW required me to make changes to my plan where continuing the Unlimited Data feature was not an option. Manager at the local VZW outlet confirmed the same; they can't sell me a full-price phone without changing the plan.
Had to purchase my VZW, carrier unlocked phones from Amazon.

well that's bs. good thing is it seems more companies are making universal phones that can be activated anywhere... like the nexus 6, and the new moto x and new nexuses comin out... meaning, I'll never again buy a phone from Verizon itself with their ugly branding. yay!

I wonder if the new phone came with a new Sim? When I upgraded last, the procedure to keep unlimited is to toss new Sim (burn with fire then microwave) and install old Sim for first activation.

Funny, I just ordered my phone on the 13th and it did nothing to my unlimited data. Bought from the Verizon Web site. It was a certified pre owned.I have been out of contract with unlimited data for years.

just asked my old boss who runs his own retailer... they can sell off contract no problem. it's like when you goto verizon and buy off contract, they still want your number and stuff.. but it's like, i'm just buying a phone full price, you don't need to know anything about me... yet again, another reason why I never buy from corporate verizon and only use retailers.

I bought one 3 days ago and kept unlimited data no problem. I would call CS and complain LOUDLY. A few months back I had a sim card go bad and when I took it in to get replacement, the rep changed my plan to 2 GB. Month and a half later I get an email about overuse of data and when I called in and explained what happened they gave unlimited back to me. She said within 30 days it is much easier to correct, but, they had to put in a service request for mine, which, took about 2-3 business days to reinstate. Good luck!

I can't see a corporate store do this, so must be a franchise store to screw up like that.

The people in the stores have been told to do what ever it takes to cheat you out of the unlimited data, that is first hand knowledge from a store manager in the family. As far as the phones go, you should not have been able to buy the phones without changing your plan, all phones from verizon are full price no more upgrades and require changing your plan, wether you pay cash or on the little deal on a monthly basis.

How about buying an unlocked compatible phone from Amazon or elsewhere? Will they try to force you out of the unlimited data plan to activate?

not if you're buying full price. I got the new moto x.. has nothing to do with your plan. it's just like buying any product on amazon. click buy, bam, done. throw your sim in, and it activates. verizon had absolutely nothing to do with the process and I love it.

Cricket's $149 LG V35 on T-Mobile...WiFi Calling/VoLTE possibility?

Just saw a reddit post where you can basically sign up and get an LG V35 brand new for $149 as long as you "sign up for their service"...and I'd be more than willing to buy the phone along with an unlock code, and move it over to my T-Mobile family plan. My only worry is that because it's has Cricket's decrepit firmware installed on the device that T-Mo's features will not work (and I'm pretty sure they won't because it's not an actual T-Mobile branded device), but I figured I would just check in here to see if anyone has tried using the Cricket V35 on T-Mobile successfully with all of the extra bells and whistles T-Mo smartphones come with. I'm sure by now this is a dumb question, but I'd even go through the trouble of rooting this joker, FlashFire some random T-Mo firmware on to the phone, and see if I can get the extra features working. Please don't hate too much since it's such a good deal, but I had to ask the experts before I made a stupid move.

Actually, the cricket variant comes unlocked, so you don't need to flash it in order to use on T-Mobile. I believe I plugged in a mint mobile sim card and saw an option to enable WiFi calling. I could be wrong. I know for a fact, WiFi calling works fine on att prepaid for this device

You bought the V35 from Cricket store carrier unlocked -- or you bought it online somewhere (eBay, Amazon, etc) carrier unlocked? If online, then it was unlocked by the seller.
Asking because I'm surprised if the Cricket variant comes from store carrier unlocked, while the one from AT&T is NOT.
I just bought another AT&T V35 online already carrier unlocked by the seller. I now own two, unlocked that way. One still has AT&T firmware.
By the way, even US998 V30 (official carrier unlocked V30 variant) has T-Mobile WiFi calling.

LG never made the LG V35 for Cricket...it's all unlocked inventory being sold off at a deep discount, which is why people are buying them left, right, and sideways just to use n T-Mobile and other MVNOs of the sort. I'm just wondering if the normal firmware has T-Mo VoLTE/VoWiFi built-in to it's current firmware or if I do need to pull out LGUP and flash a ULM firmware to get support for it since I know that it works on Google Fi which makes me think that it should work possiby even without a firmware upgrade. I know for a fact all Cricket LG V35 smartphones come unlocked, period. They don't even have Cricket boot logos when you start them up and I'm almost as sure that they don't even have branding at all on the phone itself except for an AT&T boot screen.. I'd flash over a ULM KDZ just to get rid of the AT&T logo though.

Once you add the first month of service at $55/month and taxes, this phone comes out to $225 really but i guess still worth it for a new phone. I bought mine used for around $160 and so far love it. I just wish it could be rooted and in my opinion the better processor, memory, and audio than v30 barely outweigh the benefit of having root on V30. I have both and have been trying to decide which one to keep lol.
Edit: I can also confirm WiFi calling with Mint sim on this phone.

I got this deal few days ago.
I can confirm that the device is unlocked with no cricket / at&t branding on the phone. There is no cricket / at&t boot logo as well. I only see the LG logo on boot.
And after activating it with Cricket, I immediately changed the plan to 30 dollars per month and the extra 25 dollars has been credited to the Cricket account.
So far, I am loving the device.

O can confirm wifi calling works on TMobile once you enable it on the settings. Volte also works because in the phone app the call button has HD icon on it. I tested this on my cricket v35 which arrived today, with a TMobile SIM. Hope this helps.

These providers aren't interested in selling hardware. They're interested in getting new customers and retaining them. You're locked in for 6 months if you buy the phone at the special price. Otherwise it's $300.

I know they're trying to lure in new customers, but if they're gonna sell me an unlocked V35 for $149 I'd pay for it and just use the phone on T-Mobile since apparently it's the unlocked version of the phone. It doesn't have any Cricket branding or software on it for some odd reason, and one person has stated that it even works on T-Mo WiFi Calling and VoLTE. Screwing over Cricket doesn't bother me since they're selling unlocked smartphones, but even if I could purchase a locked V35 and then unlock it with a code I would still consider it. I'm still happy with my V30+ 128GB though, and considering buying it just to replace this V30+ since it has 6GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 845. If it works on T-Mo it's a much cheaper option than buying a Galaxy S9+ that's for sure.
Also apparently all V35 phones are unlocked in the US according to the Android Pie update released last month.

It's $149 + forced to pay for six months Cricket service legal contract.
You can be sued or be sent to Collections for "screwing over Cricket".
Or you can pay full price of $300 and buy it outright with no strings.

Cricket has never once enforced contracts...it's entirely a prepaid phone company that runs on AT&T towers. They can't force you to pay for six months of service because they can't trap you in a contract since they only do prepaid phone service. AT&T could enforce it, but Cricket doesn't have the ability to...they don't even run credit checks or get all of the information necessary to access your credit, so how could they force you to stick with Cricket for 6 months if they sell you an unlocked phone? The second month they expect payment, you could just stop paying them and then the service would be cut off...that's it. If you want to be extremely sure you could setup a Privacy.com card and use a one time payment to Cricket in order to buy the phone, and then in 30 days they just cut off your service and that's all there is to it.

If you sign a purchase agreement (CONTRACT) contingent on you paying for six months of service, then it's STILL CRICKET property until you pay in full.
$149 is not the full price. It's the down payment.
Sure you can use it on T-Mobile WHILE STILL PAYING FOR CRICKET SERVICE.
But you'll no longer have your T-Mobile phone number. You have to port it to Cricket to get this deal.

These providers aren't interested in selling hardware. They're interested in getting new customers and retaining them. You're locked in for 6 months if you buy the phone at the special price. Otherwise it's $300.

Indeed I did, and I would never port my phone number to Cricket. I would get a new number from T-Mobile (EDIT: Actually it's Ultra Mobile), pay 1 month of service, and then stop payments completely. Cricket does not have the authority to run credit checks and they do not blacklist your phone's IMEI if you stop paying, and since they are selling an unlocked phone there is literally nothing Cricket/AT&T can do about it. The only thing they can do is shut off your service for the new number that Cricket assigns to your account and that is it because if you wanted to come back to Cricket, they still want you to have your phone ready to go and you'd have to purchase a new BYOD Cricket SIM card. They do not even have the capacity to impact your credit score or blacklist your phone for stopping payments on your plan if you pay for the phone in full, and you are paying $150 for the entire cost of the phone - it's not being purchased on a payment plan nor do they charge an equipment fee for the V35 after paying for the device in full. Every single month after the first 30 days you pay $50 plus taxes and that's it. I did read the terms thoroughly and that's how I know if you port in the number from a temporary place like activating a T-Mobile daily SIM card and using that number to port in and that is all that is required. T-Mobile daily prepaid SIM service = $1 per day.
EDIT: I misspoke about the cost of the T-Mobile SIM. Apparently they route you through Ultra Mobile and it's $3 per month for a SIM card with only 30 minutes on it that lasts 30 days.

The terms can say anything they want to, but the phone itself comes unlocked directly from Cricket, and the only way that Cricket could touch you is if you purchased the phone and paid for your device in payments, as in 30 dollars a month for 24 months. Cricket doesn't and never will finance phones for just six months, because that would be dimwitted of a company to do. Cricket's generic terms are that they will not UNLOCK a smartphone until the phone has been on their network for at least six months - not that it has to be paid off over a six month term. Since the LG V35 sold by Cricket arrives at your door stop comes unlocked, how are they going to ding your credit? They don't even ask for your social security number or driver's license number when checking out, only payment information. I'm not trying to start an argument for the sake of my ego...arguments on the internet are inherently dumb in the first place and I'm only trying to help you and other people that also think Cricket will wreck your credit report if you don't stay with a prepaid cellular provider for six months. If you don't believe me, launch a chat session with Cricket and link them to that offer page and ask them what the total cost of the phone is if you port in your own number and what happens if you stop paying for service after the second month of service. Their answer will be "Your service will be suspended, and no we cannot report your non-payment to any of the three credit agencies because we are a prepaid phone company and you paid for your device with a single payment and not over multiple months or years like postpaid carriers attempt to lure people into. We also can't blacklist the device because it's been paid for in full, and because the phone hasn't been reported as stolen it's still able to be used on any other GSM carrier as long as the phone is unlocked." Since the phone isn't even a Cricket branded phone and shows up at your doorstep unlocked, that's all there is to it. Feel free to read about the offer on SlickDeals.net and how other people are also buying the phone for $204.99 plus taxes just to use it with Google Fi or T-Mobile now as well, which is easy to find if you just search for "cricket V35" in the forums.

You're mistaken. The terms mention the standard terms that "you *may* be required to be on a plan for 6 months" before you can request a carrier unlock. Since the phone is carrier unlocked out of the box that request is not necessary. The discount requires a number port in not a service agreement..
It never says you are agreeing to 6 months of service. It would be perfectly reasonable to order the phone and turn off the service immediately and leave it in a drawer and never use it again without violating any kind of agreement.
