Can No Longer Buy Full-Price Phones from VZW and keep Unlimited Data. - Verizon Galaxy Note 4 General

The last phone I purchased directly from VZW was a full-price Note 2. To upgrade the phone, I went to VZW website, selected my full-price Note 4 and attempted to check out. However, to complete the checkout, VZW required me to make changes to my plan where continuing the Unlimited Data feature was not an option. Manager at the local VZW outlet confirmed the same; they can't sell me a full-price phone without changing the plan.
Had to purchase my VZW, carrier unlocked phones from Amazon.

well that's bs. good thing is it seems more companies are making universal phones that can be activated anywhere... like the nexus 6, and the new moto x and new nexuses comin out... meaning, I'll never again buy a phone from Verizon itself with their ugly branding. yay!

Wow that is messed up. Verizon is trying anything at this point.

I wonder if the new phone came with a new Sim? When I upgraded last, the procedure to keep unlimited is to toss new Sim (burn with fire then microwave) and install old Sim for first activation.

Funny, I just ordered my phone on the 13th and it did nothing to my unlimited data. Bought from the Verizon Web site. It was a certified pre owned.I have been out of contract with unlimited data for years.

maybe you just had bad luck in store.. we all know how corporate verizon employees aren't the most truthful people.
just asked my old boss who runs his own retailer... they can sell off contract no problem. it's like when you goto verizon and buy off contract, they still want your number and stuff.. but it's like, i'm just buying a phone full price, you don't need to know anything about me... yet again, another reason why I never buy from corporate verizon and only use retailers.

I bought one 3 days ago and kept unlimited data no problem. I would call CS and complain LOUDLY. A few months back I had a sim card go bad and when I took it in to get replacement, the rep changed my plan to 2 GB. Month and a half later I get an email about overuse of data and when I called in and explained what happened they gave unlimited back to me. She said within 30 days it is much easier to correct, but, they had to put in a service request for mine, which, took about 2-3 business days to reinstate. Good luck!

I can't see a corporate store do this, so must be a franchise store to screw up like that.

The people in the stores have been told to do what ever it takes to cheat you out of the unlimited data, that is first hand knowledge from a store manager in the family. As far as the phones go, you should not have been able to buy the phones without changing your plan, all phones from verizon are full price no more upgrades and require changing your plan, wether you pay cash or on the little deal on a monthly basis.

How about buying an unlocked compatible phone from Amazon or elsewhere? Will they try to force you out of the unlimited data plan to activate?

not if you're buying full price. I got the new moto x.. has nothing to do with your plan. it's just like buying any product on amazon. click buy, bam, done. throw your sim in, and it activates. verizon had absolutely nothing to do with the process and I love it.

How can I get an X?

I got a a Touch Pro 2 in November of 2009 and I hate the friggin thing. It's slow as hell and no way compares the to X. I called Verizon and they said I was not able to upgrade until August 2011. I simply can't have that. So does anyone have any advice as to what I can do to get this amazing phone within the next couple weeks. I am almost desperate enough to sign up for another plan just to get this phone.
Hell if your going to sign up for another plan you mas as well just pay full retail for the phone because its going to eat you up with early termination fees. Or you can always hit up ebay you might find a new never opened clean esn phone
Sent from my DROIDX using XDA App
You may be able to buy a cheap dumbphone on craigslist (verizon branded) and have that activate don your main line (change ESN) then you can call customer service and tell them you no longer need the unlimited data for your current plan (so they drop the $30 a month) So then you're basically just paying for your minutes and any extra features you may have such as texting etc.
THEN, go to a verizon store or Best Buy and add a line to your account with the droid X, this will run you $9.99 + $30 a month on top of what you were paying for just minutes and text.
In essence if you get the data package canceled on the first line, then added on a second line, you will only be paying $10 more a month plus the price of the droid x, which can be offset by selling your touch pro 2
I agree with everyone here, but don't worry about getting a dumb phone to replace your tp2. When I got my incredible I went in the store ready to pay full retail, they said just open a new line and we can place a fake esn on your line. Just depends on where you go. And I'm glad I didn't pay full retail, cuz I wouldn't have been able to get it replaced with a droid x.
I actually still have my old Chocolate and an old LG phone that I can't remember the name of, so should I just use those? And will VZW just let me cancel the $30 data plan?

I AM IN THE EXACT SAME BOAT AS YOU, Explodee. I bought the TP2 the day it came out for Verizon; before I had actually seen one. It was so hyped up that I thought it would be the best phone to EVER grace Vzw. Well turns out its a complete and total DUD. WinMo is by far the worst OS and I have only found about 3 apps that are worthwhile, while android has TONS of apps.
But, I know how you can get the X for the 2 year price. Just add a line. I added my family onto my account and they all got brand new BB's for the 2 year price, while my phone number didn't get any upgrade. I would just put a dummy phone on your current line, take off the data package, then open up a new line on your account with the Droid X, and switch to a family share plan.
I just switched my entire family over to my plan from Sprint, so I told the Vzw people I wanted an early upgrade if they were going to get 4 extra phone lines from their competitor. They agreed, thank god! I couldn't go another year with this TP2.
Good luck!
I should have mentioned this earlier. I am already on a family plan with my mom, bro and sis. None of them are eligible for upgrades for about a year as well. I also wanted my number to be on the X and if I had to sign up for a new account I would want to get the X for the new one, then immediately switch the service between the phones. Is that possible?
Also, would I be able to sign up for the X and cancel the data package and put the dummy phone on the X account?
Look lol I've screwed Verizon over every way possible lol, I've had EVERY Droid branded phone they made (yes even the eris ewww) and have never paid over the two year price for them and have kept the same line everytime. It just depends on how much the rep you talk to wants your business. I go to the same guy everytime, so I get a really good deal everytime. Your best bet is to make friends with someone at your local corporate store and go from there, or just add a line with the x, switch a dummy esn to that line and cancel the data package. Then switch the x to your original line, and your done. You don't even have to take the data plan off your line that way. Hope this has been helpful.

I have to chuckle every time someone posts that they have screwed a cell company.
Really? Keep reminding yourself that every month when you pay the bill.
I've been on VZW for a long time, have numerous lines with them, and have convinced them to give me early upgrades on several occasions. Not once did I think I had screwed them. At 'BEST' I felt like I got a little recognition for being a long time customer. I'm pretty sure they are still very profitable on our business.
-Z
Zaphod, you have a point. Cell phone companies make all their profit in their monthly bills, not in selling cell phones. If they did, you could get a new phone every day if you wanted.
My buddy works at walmart in the electronics department, and I had mentioned the Droid x to him. He said that a guy came in and bought a X for full retail price, 500 something dollars from him. On the register he can look up and see what how much Walmart made off of the transaction (percentage value and only for certain electronics like computers, tvs and carrier based cell phones). He told me that even at full retail, Walmart still lost money.
Vzw screws you over every month, we just help take the edge off the price by giving them 200 bucks towards a droid x

Contract? Seriously?

So I picked up a new Galaxy Tab from someone on Craigs last night. Love the device. The problem is, it's from Sprint. I wanted Sprint because they had good coverage where I needed it. Today, I found out that there's no way to get data on it without signing a 2-year contract. Seriously? You can get an iPad without signing a contract and T-mobile and Verizon have post-paid options, but not Sprint?
What is my incentive to sign a 2-year contract for a device that was never subsidized? I talked to a rep in the store as well as on the phone and there's apparently no compromise here. I guess I should have done more research before I bought the Sprint version. Now I have to sell it and try to get a T-mobile Tab.
I just can't believe that Sprint is this lame. I could understand something like this from Verizon or AT&T, but not Sprint.
I was about to say get a gsm one - i just use a pay as you go sim in the tab and swap it with the contract one with data when i want to use the tab for 3g

That sucks, I just bought T-Mob GT from CL for $280 a couple of days ago. And I am digging it. I just went to T-mobile they gave me a new sim for $10.00 and paid $10.00 for 100mb to get it started and Im on a pay as you go plan. No questions asked.
What's weird to me is Sprint doesn't want your money. I bought my sprint gtab at best buy and I'm currently on a pay per month plan that I signed up for when I bought it - 2 gig limit. I can cancel it anytime and there's no 2 year contract. Maybe it was a promotional contract or something i dont know. It's weird that if I sold it they wouldn't let the owner fire up the same plan.

You can activate with a contract
If you paid for price for the device and its not logged in their system as being sold with a contract, you can activate it month to month it just takes some talking. I received my tab as a gift and it was bought at full price at Best Buy. I had to talk to 3 sets of higher up reps, but finally someone was able to active it on the month to month plan. Just be persistent.
That's why, despite all it's shortcomings, I bought the verizon version. AT&T blows in general and I will be damned if I'm signing a contract for a freaking tablet so Verizon it was. I'll go without before I sign a contract for any kind of phone, tablet, laptop or anything else ever again.

Did you already have Sprint service? I talked to two different reps today. They are claiming that I have to activate a line of service, which initiates the contract. I currently have a contract with AT&T, so that's not going to happen.
Still, I think it's ridiculous that it's this hard with Sprint, considering that I can buy a T-mobile Tab and just pop in a sim card and go with no issues. I've been shopping around for a T-mobile Tab, but I haven't found anything in the same price range so far. For me, the Tab is kind of crippled without always on data.
**Update**
I called again tonight and talked to a very sweet girl. She apparently talked to the right supervisor this time and they let me go month-to-month. Thanks for the suggestion, wolf. Looks like I'm good to go. Now I'll just have to go through this again if I ever cancel service and want to reactivate it.
So they do support month-to-month for tablets. You just have to talk to someone who knows that.

BB Clerk tries to make me change plan for Note 4

Went inside best buy mobile today to pick up my pre ordered note 4, and they told me that i had to switch my plan in order to walk out with the phone! The new plan they were trying to get me on would make me pay 800$ for my note and be "off contract". In order to switch to that plan id have to cancel all 5 of my lines, with the ETF fees up in the thousands of dollars. I told him no way and that id call sprint, and ge told me that even if I call i'd still have no choice. Anyone else encounter something similar?

I had something similar happen to me today at the Sprint Store. The clerk insisted that I couldn't keep my plan. I told him to get bent. After a heated exchange, I turned on the phone, had the phone go through the automated activation process and viola, I was activated on my existing plan. He sheepishly mumbled something under his breath and I walked out with my phone.
I'm guessing they only make the sweet commission when they sign you up for a new plan.
I had trouble with keeping my plan at Best Buy as well but the Best Buy Mobile guy called Sprint. I didn't even have to push. He did that on his own. The woman at Sprint wanted to speak to me to get permission to speak with the clerk about my account. They were able to fix it so that I was able to keep my plan. It took a few minutes but didn't seem to be a problem. I have the old Everything Data 450 plan which I've had for a couple of years now. Got it with my Galaxy S3.
When I looked it up on Sprint's website a few days ago, it just said that you had to have an Everything Data plan (or some other type of plan but I can't remember the name) and it didn't specify that you had to have a higher plan. I'm glad I got to keep my plan. It's already more than I need. The plan he was looking to switch me to would've been $90 before taxes. Right now I pay $80.

Been There Done That
I bought the Note 4 for my fiance` yesterday. We had been shopping around for phones for a while. Many of the sales rep's said the same thing, in that we had to switch plans and we could not buy the phone out right but instead had to make a $30/month payment for 24 months. This was not going to happen. I mean, what about my rebates and the 2 year contract discounts. Finally I called up the HQ corporate store in Reston VA to get the skinny on the situation. They instructed me to go to any corporate store and that they could get me the phone with my discounts and continue to use the plan I have on my phone, the S4. Long story short YES you can keep your old plan, YES you can buy the phone outright and not pay nearly $800 for the device! Now you know and anyone who says otherwise should win the employee of the month award.
PS The employees at sprint whom I have worked with at both HQ and other corporate locations are extremely knowledgeable and go out of there way to make sure you are happy with their service. One employee sat and entertained my son while the other explained how to best utilize the phones features while yet another went of to find an assortment of accessories. I felt like I was a celebrity. And they did this for every customer. It doesn't get much better than that.
Pre-order thru BB picked up yesterday no issues upgraded my line. Traded a old evo 4g got 200$ paid 123$ total for note 4. Can't beat that deal never tried or force me to change plan family 1500 here unlimited data

When I went to pre-order at BB, that's what I was told as well.. They are saying that Sprint is forcing this issue.. I pre-ordered anyway, only because I want the 200 rebate on the old phone. I figured I'd argue the point when I pick it up.
Otherwise, I would have had my phone in hand already from Sprint instead of waiting on BB.
I picked up the note4 from the sprint store yesterday and ended up going with the new plan. They spelled out the two programs and said either are available with pros and cons of both and I ended up going with the "new" plan. Did I make a mistake ? Its still unlimited data and seemed to be mostly the same ?
So now you are paying 720 for the phone... Good deal?

the two new plans we offered now says in small writing, your plan can be throttled while watching a movie to 1 megabyte per second and people with other plans have priority over data than you do.
I tried to add a second line to my account which I have the 450 data unlimited plan and they said that they had to go into a new plan you have two phones I stated about the new rules of being throttled me act like you didn't know anything about it and would not look it up.
I don't watch alot of video over cell. So I'm fine with switching over. I can see for people who are using 10+ gigs a month that being a problem.
It's not just video. You get on the web at peak times, guess who gets bumped first. The peeps with the new plans. It might not matter to some. I live out in the boonies and have only one tower to connect to and sucks during peak. But Sprints my only choice, unless back to satillite.........NOT
I ended up getting my way by calling sprint in the best buy store to keep my existing plan, but he told me sprint was going to make me switch one way or another sooner than later.
Again that's not a bad thing. I don't get kicked off data. I just don't get priority data service. That's no different then other unlimited plans.
My data usage is somewhere between 1-2 gigs a month. I don't see it being that big of a deal. If its not your only source of net.
Plan Change
I was told by Sprint rep that I would have to change plans if I upgraded through them. One Sprint rep told me other retailers such as BB could do the upgrade without changing plans. Both BB stores I talked to confirmed this. I had no problem when getting mine.
I pre-ordered two at BB and picked them up Friday. The guy during pre-order didn't have a problem with me keeping my plan and neither did the guy I picked them up from. Seems like it is hit or miss on knowledgeable versus not knowledgeable employees in both sprint and BB. It also sounds like someone us perpetuating something false to lots of people making it worse.

I had the same issue, but at a Sprint corporate store! They kept telling me that we would have to call Sprint customer care and get their permission for us to keep our current plan (the grandfathered in 1500 Everything data plan). We called customer care from home, and they said they will put something on our account that says we wouldn't have to change our plan. When I went back to pre-order it, they told us we would have to call customer care in store in order to get this change approved. After a bunch of arguing everything was handled and I pre-ordered the phone (about 2 weeks ago). Friday comes, and that store never got the phone in. I was going out of town so I was a bit upset that I wasn't going to have my new phone. Saturday I went to a Sprint store where I was at for the weekend and they had Note 4's in-stock. While purchasing we weren't told we had to change our plan at all, and it was a very smooth process. The $80 that Samsung would send me 1-2 months from now for pre-ordering the phone was irrelevant at this point.
TLDR- One store said we had to change our plan and would not budge, Other store didn't even bring up changing our plan.

Best buy alternate upgrade to retain Verizon unlimited data

Anyone else doing this? I have unlimited on one line and have pre ordered a note. I plan on transferring an eligible upgrade from an existing dumb phone line to a 2gb smartphone line to get the note at the upgrade price.
last time I went to best buy, they couldn't do this but that was awhile ago. Never had a problem with costco to do the upgrade swap. I recently did it an upgrade swap with my second line to keep my unlimited data. BTW, costco only charges tax on the sales price on the phone and not tax on the retail price of the phone which is nice.

You can switch phones as often as you want between lines. However, be careful. I'm currently in quite the argument with Verizon supervisors about some miscommunication between myself and their reps.
I did this for my wife last month to get her the iPhone 6. Well the short version is when I went to put the "dumb phone" back on a basic 10$ add a line (like two different reps ASSURED me I could. And have done it twice in the past) I am now being told the new contracts say you must keep the 2gb 29.99 data plan through the length of the contract, regardless of what phone is on that line.
This is a new practice for them, and total BS because I've had this line for a longggg time. It's been a gigantic hassle while I wait for them to pull the phone calls, etc.

I can use this method online thru vzw.com, if I transfer the upgrade from the dumbphone line (no data) to the 2gb smartphone line it doesn't prompt me to add data to the dumbphone line, it just verifies the 2gb line has data which is obv does. I understand what you're saying though, I saw some update to Verizon's policy at the end of August this year that does state if you add data to a line it must keep data for the life of the contract. Obviously if you were told by 2 reps they could remove it then they should honor it.
If nothing else I plan on doing this, just move the upgrade to the 2gb line. And activate the note 4 on the 2gb line. I'll then go to a Verizon corporate store and have them do a device swap between the 2gb line and the unlimited line device.

I was considering using Costco but the $200 gift card at best buy is such a good deal. I have an old droid x2 which isn't worth $10 @ Verizon or Costco (cannot qualify for the rebate thru Samsung) but is worth $15 at best buy....
I was going to use a phone line with data that is due but the upgrade is available. Best Buy will apply the offer to that line and then switch my sim card for my line into the N4. I say WAS, since without root I will not bother
with the N4. Need card writes for non stock apps. Too many emulator and media apps the access my 128gb card. No card writes means no Note 4 and probably six months to wait for Lollipop that MIGHT have external writes enabled for non stock apps.
With the BB method you MUST have them ship the phone and you activate it with your current UDP sim card.

What conditions? BB will activate it on the line (if data on it already) and then do the switch in store. Fairly common practice by staff at my local store.

I think the only way it works is if you have a device already with a sim card that fits. Not for sure though, so BB could tell you.
BB told me I can't just take the sim card from my G3, and swap it into the Note 4 when I buy it outright. They have to activate a new sim card that comes with it but they told me it does NOT effect my unlimited data at all.

I hope this is true. I'll find out this week
Edit: nvm I didn't see you were buying the device outright
Sorry, I was less than specific. BB activates the device with a data line with a new sim card for the new device and THEN swaps the user's sim card.

This is what I was looking for. Thanks!

Wow this is new, if that is the case with costco, then I'm going to switch to Tmobile. Getting tired of Verizon dictatorship and crippling our devices.
Yeah, the $200 is nice but was unsure if Best Buy can still retain my unlimited data. Never had a problem with costco swapping upgrade dates. All I know for sure, once I lose unlimited data, I'm switching to Tmobile. Verizon almost got an instant termination from me when they announced throttling but luckily retracted from that.

Verizon was previously talking about throttling unlimited data users. They eventually decided to drop that idea

Sweet!! I heard a big fuzz about throttling but i never heard they oficially cancelled. I wonder if they also retracted on closing the loopholes to upgrade on dumb lines since both moves were being touted at the same time by big red.

Ugh WTH ATT/Moto?

So ATT can't fix the recalled phones in-store at a corporate location? UGH!
My ATT contract has been up for about 2 months now. I wanted the Note 4 but now that Chainfire has said it will mostlikely not be bootloader unlocked, I've lost interest. Decide to wait on the Nexus 6. Missed pre-ordering so I decided to just pick one up today at my local store. Went to get one and was told they couldn't sell me one.
I can't afford to buy one outright, need do to a 2-year or Next and I really wanted to stick with ATT.
Went to order one online to get one hopefully on the way but now they are out-of-stock online! UGH.
Really sucky part is that my S3 broke about 2 weeks ago, screen is cracked and the digitizer doesn't work right so I can barely use it. I can answer calls but not place them or really use the phone.
Sad panda! :*(
Sorry to hear that, but you can always try T-Mobile. You can still buy it from them and can pay in monthly intervals for 24 months
http://www.t-mobile.com/cell-phones/google-nexus-6.html#Midnight-Blue
$0 down. $27 for 24 months (32GB), $29 for 24 months (64GB)
Do note that you will have to wait before it gets shipped, or you can call your nearby T-Mobile stores to see if they have any in stock.
T-Mobile loves you.

If this guy orders from T-Mobile, and gets his phone before I get mine (a 64GB ordered on 11/19, 8 AM CST), I'm going to lose my ^&*(.
EDIT: kdoggy, I wish you the best in your endeavors to get a hold of this phone...
I was in a similar situation a few months ago. My Galaxy S4 broke. I was still in the middle of my contract with AT&T and couldn't afford to replace my phone at full retail price. I was thinking about ditching AT&T anyway. I switched to T-Mobile. I I traded in my busted S4 towards a Nexus 5, got the unlimited plan and had all but a few bucks of my AT&T ETF paid off by T-Mobile and haven't looked back. Just got my Nexus 6 the other day.

What I did today was go into the store and do a 'direct fulfillment' order and basically ordered the phone. No idea when it will ship, but that way you won't have to keep checking online and also they can make sure and set up your plan just the way you want it etc. Make all the necessary changes. I would recommend doing it this way. The rep almost sold me the unit they had, but saw the notice on her screen or something. Was that close!
I can't really switch from AT&T. We have 3 other phones on our account and my wife is not willing to switch from AT&T and she does not want a new phone. She is happy with keeping her S3 Vs. paying for a new phone. She was all set to grab an S5 for $1.00 this Black Friday until she found out that we have been charged a "$25.00" dollar up-charge for the phones the past two years. She is enjoying the $15.00 per line right now and doesn't even want ME to buy a new phone.
Her and the kids just bought new batteries for their S3's so they have no plans to change. I use my phone for work though (state government, in the technology services field) so I have an excuse and justification for an upgrade. Also the state gives me a $70.00 dollars a month reimbursement towards my phone bill and I get a 20% discount for being a state gov employee.

Your other alternative would be to buy it from Motorola on Wednesday and get 6/12/18 month financing or to just wait for AT&T.

How does that work with Motorola? Now when you say Motorola, I assume you mean threw Google Play? How does the financing work?
I am also with AT&T, and a few months ago I was trying to pick up the Nexus 5 from T-Mobile. T-Mobile would not sell me the phone at all unless I purchased some form of service with them. Regardless of the fact the phone is unlocked; the reps stated their systems wouldn't allow a phone sale without accompanying service. So good luck buying from T-Mob.

No not through Google Play. http://www.motorola.com/us/consumers/nexus-6-header/Nexus-6/nexus-6-motorola-us.html
When its in stock (Wednesdays) itll be available to buy. Its really tough from buying there and Google Play as it'll be out of stock and whatnot.
Financing is the same thing as you would on a carrier. You can pay out ~$649 + tax in 6/12/18 months (you pick) and you have to be approved.
