bypass tethering on the unlimited plan - AT&T Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

hey everyone!
so i have the s7 edge on the att unlimited plan.
I have been using Foxfi (i did but the full version) which bypasses the usb tethering, not the hotspot tethering.
so i bypass the usb tethering to my laptop, and on the full version you can do wifi sharing. Which then i can hotspot to anything, tv, xbox, ect. so for people who are trying to look for a way to bypass that, there you go.
but my issue is when is go to do wifi sharing it now says re-enable microsoft wifi virtual mini adapter...
I have searched the internet for a few days trying anything i can do re-enable that, but nothing is working!
using toshiba on windows 10.
any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated

I have the s7 edge on Att unlimited plan also. Do you have to be rooted to use Foxfi?

To be honest I think even if we bypass the tethering restriction AT&T will begin to take notice. I had a palm pre years ago and that is what happened to me

When it happened to me AT&T sent me a statement saying if I continued to do it they would automatically upgrade me to a tethering plan.

Rooted w/ Xposed and using XTouchWiz confirmed working with new unlimited plans.

Wifi tethering and T Mobile txt message about upsell to mobile hotspot plan.

I'm currently using the stock rom with root GS 2 w/2.3.6 . The only thing I did is remove most of the bloat ware and uninstall the wifi tethering manager app that blocks the use of it without a hot spot data plan. I was using my wifi hotspot and all the suddenly got a txt message about upsell to hot spot plan if not my tethering will be block. As anybody experience this. I came from a Vibrant and never got this txt message. Only once did I go over the 5gb data cap with a G2 a while back. I'm under the old unlimited data plan ( 5gb soft cap). With the Vibrant I was using a Team Whiskey rom not the stock rom. Do you think it could be the stock rom or just tmobile being more smart about detecting this now.

I've never had this problem, I also have the 5gb plan. When I have used the tether and hotspot its been on a custom rom. I don't think the rom matters though.

Been using a custom ROM from day one incl. freezing/uninstalling the bloatware [presumably] associated w/tethering and used to get the same msgs. but didn't see them for a couple weeks. Just this morning got a new upsell msg., so they may have figured out a way around.
I'm only tethering to check work e-mail and that's through VPN, so that may have something to do with it.
I tether everyday, never had this txt message.with stock rooted or custom
From a glaxay better than yours.
I got this message once or twice on my vibrant. I was using my tether a lot and for heavy tasks though.
dont use internet explorer, use firefox. i found out they can detected if you use Internet explorer
Thanks seems to be IE and T Mobile doing a better job at catching it.

I hope Tmo doesn't find a day to block it. I have no ethical qualms tethering without a plan. Tmo has no business telling me through what medium and velocity I go through my 5gb every month.

I use stock rom and I tether my phone to my galay tab and I never received any text msg from Tmobile. My phone is rooted and I have deleted tether management app. Also I use Open Garden Wifi tether app from market. From what I understand, it enables the build in tether but without sending a msg to Tmobile.
All you smart people, please correct me if I am wrong.
I have been using Open Garden WIFI Tether for almost a week without any problems. I just leave it open while driving. My son access it with his IPod Touch and my daughter with rooted NOOK Tablet. So far so good.
Tmo rep here. The tethering plan has always been $15 but Tmo has never really enforced it. They have recently started preventing tethering from working on devices but it is still pretty hit or miss. On my coworker's stock Amaze she is getting blocked even on the employee data plan but on my GS2 I have never been restricted but I've always been rooted.
Starting on the 25th of this month, they will be adding free tethering to 5GB data plans so if you do a a 5 gig plan, just have Tmo update the data feature and you should have no problem tethering. If you are just on a 2GB plan, you should be fine if you are rooted.

We all know AT&T has some epic systems setup to prevent tethering, at least for the iPhones.

Just called in (had to call in and ask for cancellations to even speak to anyone) the idiot I spoke to never heard of this promotion. Never had a tethering problem until yesterday when I tried it after reading this thread. I never had a problem with my N1 or Sensation. I really hate having to talk to people at Tmo. 90% of the time they are so stupid I'm ready to cancel my contract. I guess I will root and axe the wifi mgmt app and see if it works. If I have to call those idiots again I may be moving to Sprint.
From the wording of the TMO News document picture
http://www.tmonews.com/2012/01/t-mobile-launching-new-hush-hush-promotional-plans-on-january-25th/
it looks like you have to be upgrading to 5gb or 10gb to get this. The person I spoke to today said they always charge for tethering. Just like the dozen people I spoke with 6 months ago told me they always charge for wifi calling and there was no $20 5gb preferred plan. Not sure if dealing with these people is worth the money saved. smh
i juts called to ask about a thing on my bill and they offered me the upgrade to the 5gb for an extra 10 dollars per month, i dont really tether and im always either at my home wifi or my work's wifi, but im reeeally starting to think about sprint here, the problem is i travel overseas and i need a gsm phone.
if not ill switch to simple mobile, a friend has it and he has had no problems so far with it with international calling and 4g for 60 bucks i can be happy with that price, i would have to ask about the quality of the service though and get the unlock code for my phone first.

Is it possible to use wireless hotspot without a subscription?

I have a Verizon with a grandfathered unlimited data plan. I used to use it a lot with my Samsung Galaxy S3 but a forced update broke this functionality. I would like to upgrade phones and want to know if the Moto X Style/Pure can do subscription-less wireless hotspots? If so, how?
I will venture a guess and say that FoxFi won't work on this. From my small amount of research so far, it sounds like FoxFi doesn't work on Motos. Poeple have also seemed to have bad luck with other app store tethering apps on the Motos. With that said, this being "unlocked," I don't know if the native tethering settings will work.
Either way, I'm assuming if this has an unlocked bootloader and we can root... I'm sure there will be a way around.

Thank you for answering my question. Do you know if it makes a difference if I purchase a Moto X Style vs a Pure?
My assumption is that the Style will be locked by Verizon while the Pure should not be locked? If it is the same thing, I will buy a style since I can get that subsidized with a 2 year plan if this is not the case I will purchase a Pure from a third party.
I have used foxfi in the past with moto phones. I have not needed it since loosing my unlimited data. Those phones were on pre 5.0 android. I have not kept up to see if they have updated it to work on 5.0 and later.

On the droid turbo, nothing worked.
However as long as we get root, which I think will happen. They can modify the apk not to check for hotspot provisions.
Sent from my Nexus 6 using Tapatalk
Since this is an unlocked phone, wouldn't it work just like how Nexus devices work? I assumed that since you wouldn't have any of Verizon's software it wouldn't do the tethering check.

My next phone.
Heck, I don't even need to root if that's the case.
Me too! If I can tether out of the box, I won't need to root either, though I'll probably unlock the bootloader on day 1, since that wipes the device.
I read elsewhere that it is advisable to do the initial setup over wifi, with no sim, to prevent the device from downloading and VZW software that may prompt the device to check for subscription before starting hotspot.
I know it isn't that hard to watch a tutorial and root, but with OTA's popping up, it would be nice if I didn't need to root.
According to @spotmark in this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/mot...o-x-2015-pure-edition-waiting-t3192510/page51 it's confirmed working on Verizon with Unlimited Data, no tethering subscription!!
If you're unlocked and rooted, you don't need Foxfi or any other third party app. Native Hotspot works fine
(I'm on Verizon)

Not true. I'm with Straight Talk (AT&T) and it wouldn't let me tether. There is a provisioning check. I had to root to get tethering.
Straight Talk is not ATT. It uses other carriers networks to provide service. That's not the same as having serivce directly from ATT. I have Verizon and ATT, tethering worked on both without root.
I'm on Sprint 10+ years and I root and enable native tethering on all of my phones since the Evo.Sprint has never said a word.I average 20-30 GB of data a month .
sprint limits hotspot data
Hi, have a quick question. I am on a simply everything plan at sprint for 70 bucks a month. But they check if I use the unlimited data with my hotspot. If I tether they limit the data to 3 GB a month and charge if I get over that. Is there a way to get around that?

tether without root

Hi all
I have the old unlimited plan that does not allow tethering. I have been trying to find a solution that would work without root. So far nothing has worked for me. Not even foxfi that people day works with Verizon has worked. Has anyone figured out a way to do this? Other than this one thing missing, I love the phone and find no reason to want to root it even at this point. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Haven't tried that yet. Was hoping for a wireless solution but that can work in some instances too. Usually use it for my tablet more than a computer but worth a shot.

I am waiting on my S7e but I put it on my tablet TAB A and it has a wireless hotspot, so yeah you can do it wirelessly. I should receive the S7e monday. I had it but had to return as i was on a lease and I wanted to get the BOGO promo. and now it was backorder.
Unfortunately that doesn't seem to run any differently. Enables but the connected device still goes to the up sell page.

you should pay for it.... and stop giving the rest of us a bad name by stealing data....
Just my opinion
That's the thing. I can't pay for it. They won't give me the option to even if I wanted to. I have the unlimited data plan but for my rate plan they never added the option to tether to mine and won't. I'm still paying for unlimited data though.
Switch plans new unlimited plans comes with 14gb free tethering other than that your SOL
I would if they would let me keep my @home phone line on the new plan but they won't. I need that more than I need tethering. Only use it for work email and reading on my tablet on occasion the computer.
Depends on what you're tethering. I had the S7 for a week and a half and used pdanet (returned it due to lack of root) to tether to my laptop. On my laptop browser I used opera browser with a user agent switcher (Safari for windows) and it worked fine, no upsell, mobile hot spot data not affected. When tethering with Pdanet to a phone however my hot spot data got dinged.
Tethering to a phone or Tab You'll most likely need root and WiFi Tether Router.
Hope that helps. Don't forget to create a new APN with ipv4 in both fields.

The terms of service don't really specify that anywhere that I saw the last time I read it. But because tmobile does not offer the services I need on a plan I am forced to find work arounds. If they would let me keep my at home line and go to a Tethering plan I wouldn't have this problem.

You stated that you're on an old data plan that doesn't allow tethering, right? So, the terms you agreed to doesn't allow tethering, correct? We're you made aware of the fact that tethering wasn't included? If so, you know very well that the unlimited data portion of your plan is only for unlimited data on your smartphone.
Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge
The plan I have does not say anything on the literature if I could or not anywhere. I could tether without root on my s3 and on my blackberry. Only on newer devices I can't and anytime I talk with tmobile they only say that my plan isn't compatible with my device and I need to get a new plan. The new plan doesn't support at home landlines.

Well get separate plan with tethering or pay for Internet
I would need to buy a Tethering device just for that only if I wanted a separate plan. I only have one cell phone and the at home line on my current plan. If I move my cell to another plan they say I need to cancel the at home line. And I don't want to purchase another device and a new line of service at over 40 a month just for the few times and little amount I use it just because their system won't let me keep my at home line to get a plan that is supposedly compatible with my phone to tether.

Based on what I read it pretty much never will work. It has to do with an exploit that was used to hijack a setting to get tethering to work.
Is there a way to prevent the phone from updating, or at least get rid of the nag screen?
me too....help
My kid and I both have S7, he unfortunately updated to Nougat. No foxfi for him. But we do have unlimited data, the new plan. Verizon is only carrier to give 10g of hot spot tethering, he uses it as if he still had foxfi. There are no overage charges. He games, Alot. No complaints.
The tethering on my phone has always worked never had to use foxfi just turn on the mobile hotspot and connect with whatever device you need connected I use this for online gaming on ps4 and youtube videos at night

I believe tethering is included when you have a tiered data plan. Those of us with an older grandfathered unlimited data plan, we needed FoxFi to tether to avoid the $30+- charge. Now Verizon requires us to select the new unlimited data plan (that throttles at 22gb) to even pay to use tethering.

It's not really throttled it just puts you second to lower data users on the same tower that you are connected to I guess I don't experience the slow down because of where I live but even in the big cities neer me I still get full speed but I understand being on the grandfathered plans I was too at one time then I got a family lol

Foxfi WORKS on O ?

As the title says, i just found that FoxFi does indeed work again on Android O.. I have a Pixel XL and was messing around with FoxFi until something seemed to "click".. and next thing I know...
0 mods or roots. I'm on TMO and I'm gonna try VZW next.
Great news! I was using the build.prop hack before I switched to unlimited. To bad almost nothing else works correctly with O yet... Google voice search and Google Music are unusable.

Only issue I've ran into so far is the fingerprint sign on for the Wells Fargo app and like one other thing. You use Foxfi so you don't pay for the hotspot fee that your carrier charges you. In my case, I've been saving $20 monthly for years (that's how much Verizon charges for the feature)

ah ok, I'm not charged for creating a hotspot but my data is metered so this wouldn't work for me. Thanks for clarifying
I'm on Verizon unlimited $80 and my tethering has stopped. It won't let me tether at all and I'm on pure Nexus. IDK what's going on.
