Front facing camera, distortion / long face - Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions and Answers

I know the S7 has a wide angle camera, and this is the result of long / narrow faces.
Or this is how it appears on mine.
Wondering if anyone has stumbled across any mods or anything?
I don't normally do selfies, but I just tried and wow!
Someone suggested taking the picture at arm length and cropping the picture, while this works, its not a solution for native apps that use the camera.
I.e. Snap chat etc.
Had anyone has the same experience and had any solutions or luck?

I asked myself the same question. Its cool to get more of the background on the picture, but for little bit closer takes it looks just stretched and unreal.

haha, well i have a rather round face.
But when i take a selfie using this camers, It looks like i have to eat for a few months. LOL!
Might work well for woman Samsung, But am not keen on looking as skinny as possible

Are you guys also expierencing with the front camera makes your face out of focus. Example if i take pictures with front camera my eyebrows, nose and beard is all blury and out of focus?
This kind of problem need more attention because ive heard that a lot of s7 and s7 edge users with this problem. Yet there is no update to fix this.

As another user suggested, Sounds like filters.
Samsung added a few, If enabled can remove wrinkles and marks from your face.
At the cost of looking plastic........ lol

Yes it may be a software fault, eventhough beauty mode is off it's still on somehow.
I know someone who complained it and they changed the camera, the fault was still present.
And my brother got fed up that this issue wouldn't get fixed so he ended up selling his s7 edge.
Could you guys try a selfie and look in the details of your eyebrows look how out of focus and blury it is, and details around hair, beard is oversaturated making the picture look distorted and poor.

Bad Camera autofocus on Note..

as on others devices (S2),also on Note i noticed that autofocus is not perfect.
On macro it works well, but on normal photos and expecially ZOOMING....i can not get a good focus.
Try to zoom 4x ...impossible to get a correct focus..for me
a personal problem...or firmware problem....?
i have last firm ...upgraded on line 2 days ago.
Regards..
You should never use digital zoom on a phone camera the results are always terrible. Also I noticed my SGSII had a tough time auto focusing during videos. It was always freaking out trying to focus on the center object.
on HTC HD2 autofocus works well also zooming...
samsung optical software are very bad...
No solution?
Have you guys noticed a tiny piece of protective plastic over the camera lens? May or not be obvious, but have you removed that?

are you on 2.3.6? On my note (2.3.6), I just tried what you described (4x zoom and focus) and it had no trouble focusing.
This was indoors, with some light coming through the window blinds and it's almost sunset outside. So not really bright inside.
Granted, digital zoom is always (and I mean always) a bad call compared to taking an unzoomed photo and cropping/enlarging yourself, but at least the phone had no trouble focusing while zoomed in.
its not just you
Its not just you. I have the same proplem now, but did not when i recieved it. The problem is just more aparent when zooming in the phone but you also see it unzoomed on the full photo on the PC. Auto focus just does not do its job and everything is really blurry. I think the problem only came up after a firmware upgrade, but i may be mistaken.
I already tried downgrading which did not work (maybe an even older version is required?) but then noticed the CSC code wrongly set to KOR. Stetting it to the for me correct DBT did not help either.
Anyone has this without having upgraded? Anyone solved it?<
Update: Looking back at made photos... If this is a software issue, it was not present in firmare KK9. I got a photo mentioning that firmware that was ok. However I have this version installed now, and focusing is not ok.
However i still see it possible that some changed from more recent firmwares like a camara firmware change made it in that was not reversed when installing the older version.
I'd appreciate if we could work together in narrowing down this problem by comparing situations.
My phone's auto-focus was working fine until I did the KKA firmware update. Now it is crap. I've been hoping for another update to fix it, bit no dice so far!
I have the same problem. I was considering sending my Note back or trying to find a camera replacement until I figured out my first few pix (pre update) were very good. I just hope an update comes soon because I'm working with a Mac at home and have failed to root or flash one of the updated roms.

The camera in the Galaxy Note has about 8 million photosensors. That defines the resolution you're going to get. Digital zoom only enlarges the pixels, interpolating, it's the same if you shoot without zoom and then enlarge the picture on the computer.
For me the camera on the Galaxy Note is pretty capable, better than a compact camera I had 6 years ago.
I don't know who you're responding to with the post of your image sample, but I cannot get anything close to this at the moment. Only in macro mode. The problems is auto focus, it has nothing to do with zoom.
I decided to ask for a replacement or repair from amazon.de and was in luck.
Due to an extended cristmas timeframe in which you can just send it back or get a replacement I just sent mine back and they sent me a new one right away.
The new one is fine now. The camera photos are really good.
Plus, now the screen on this new one is nicely even compared to the slightly uneven display brightness in some areas of the screen (especially on grey color) on my old one.
Also got the latest firmware on it without a problem.
So I'm really happy now
Im sure you guys know in photos you can touch the screen to set your focus point.
Digital zoom will just give you crap results, avoid this and just zoom and crop in editing which will give you a much better image.

Poor front camera quality?

just tested out the front facing camera and was really surprised with the quality, or lack there of. My skin looks almost airbrushed and the photos look soft and somewhat grainy. Honestly the front cam on my gs4 has significantly more detail(compared them side-by-side under the same conditions). Does anyone else see the front cam this way or is there something up with mine? Maybe it's intentional to make people's faces look airbrushed? If so I'm not a fan :/
You need to turn off the "Beauty Face" option.
Oh wow. Now I feel like a noob. Thanks!
User error.
There's also a rear camera selfie mode that works ok (no flash though?). Also be sure to take the plastic off the rear camera. I could barely tell it was there so i would understand if people missed it.
Off topic
anyone know how to turn off burst shot ? cant find it anywhere
grainy front facing camera and other things
I just got a brand new Galaxy Note 4 and my front facing camera is super grainy and blurry and its missing a ton of the cool settings the note 4 is famous for. I just found out that its because the phone is a really good Chinese knock off! It explains a lot of the major issues ive been having lately like the terrible lag,the crashing of the browser at every use, motion and gesture settings cant be activated and so many other things like it wont download certain apps or wont connect to certain networks. Just thought id let anyone know who has been having similar issues.

Note 4 camera won't lock focus + blurry edges on pictures with far focus

Hi everybody,
I've been using my Note 4 for a week. It's a great phone, great display, great performance and what I was convinced would be a great camera.
Before that I used a S3 (International version I9300) for two years and a S5 (International version G900F) for six months and nothing negative to say about them. They both gave great, clear, beautiful, sharp pictures, especially for a phone (I couldn't imagine it was possible before). I think it's important to say that so I can justify myself and show I'm not making up things...
I started to have doubts after a couple a days concerning the Note 4 camera. I found the pictures not sharp, especially in edges (kind of tilt-shift effect).
And then, yesterday, several XDA topics confirmed my concerns ...
So... To sum up :
Far pictures have blurry edges (I know lenses edges can be blurry, but in this case, when I mean blurry, I mean sometimes 1 third of the pictures... Close pictures and close-ups are great.
When taking pictures in landscape mode, focusing in the bottom third of the screen is just not possible, I can't see the focusing screen in this zone, as it did on the S3 or S5.
Locking focus has never been and is never possible (when trying to focus, I can see the focusing circle but I can't see or hear any green circle or sound confirmation (as it did on the S3 or S5, you can see my youtube video).
To make everything clear again, I (still) own a S3 and S5 with no camera problem, with a normal behaviour and we have two Note 4 at home with the exact same problems.
I have a master in digital photography and, being less picture enthusiastic and having not enough time, I replaced my equipment by these devices, and I was totally ok with that. (= I know I'm not making up things)
To illustrate what I'm saying (I know some of these pictures were made in a foggy weather but depth of field is clearly not "logical" here...).

I assume the problem here may be part software and part hardware (but again, two Note 4 with same problems ?).
Could a Samsung rep take this problem serioulsy and take it into account for a next update ? (except if it's a hardware problem )
Thanks a lot for your attention !
Chris.
I'm pretty sure your device is faulty. The blur in your images is not normal, I guess the lens is not mounted correctly. This may also be the reason for your focusing problems.
Have a look at the photo thread, you'll see plenty of images without blur.
I agree with you but what about the focusing problem on just a part of the screen ? (see the youtube video).
And the fact we have two note 4 with the same problems :/.

I experienced that focusing problem. Can't remember if STOCK straight out of the box did it, but I know when I used FireKat ROM it did it. I flashed the Camera Mod and it did it. But, now I'm using DynamicKat and it's fine. The far left edge of the camera picks up my touch and focuses.
Also for the Blurr thing. Is your Camera MODE in Selective Focus?

I still have stock ROM.
Are you also experiencing different focus zones in your pictures?
I'm really starting to think my camera is defective .
No. But did you make sure that you are not using Selective Focus Mode?
Yes, I did. All my tests and conclusions were based on my S3 and S5 experience
Well I read your post thoroughly and felt that you have written a reflection of what is going through my mind.
Exact same issues !! If you read my twitter feed ~ 10 days ago you will be happy to know that you are not alone.
I noticed the problem in the first 2 days of purchase and took it to a Samsung store few days later. They were very defensive initially but after 10 mins of technical conversation with a dude who did not know much about the difference between camera resolution and screen resolution I could show them the blur. Both on my phone and on a PC they had in store.
We did some like for like comparison with another note 4. Problem was evident.
They advice me to go back to service provider (Virgin Australia) and request a replacement under early life hardware failure.
I am now playing the to and fro game with my service provider who are throwing in all sort of hurdles. Hope I get a replacement !!!

I tried with s5 camera on sport mode and the same result the photo is still blur. .i beleve this is the software problem not the camera. .
Typical problem of the Note 4's software.
I also opened a thread for discussing the matter - but people just did not understand the problem.
Here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2948640
Just got nonsense replies.
Seems to be close to impossible making people understand the obvious... :/

Yes Chefproll, here they are . Plus two new ones taken today.
See, when I focus on the left side of the screen, almost the rest of the picture is blurry and when I focus on the right side, the left part of the picture is blurry...
I assume the lens is off-center mounted :/...
Same case ...... see the photos ...

SO I found out from android central forums that if you shake it for like 30 seconds it works so obviously its a problem. I tried google camera and camera 360 and neither worked but my front camera is amazing. I'd suggest a swap for a brand new unit.

I was thinking the same too.
I own N910C and i don't have this issue at all. I know there are two types of camera lens in the note 4 one is Sony and the other one is Samsung. Maybe you have one of the others ?!
Glad i found this thread.. I have the exact same issue with my note 4. You need to be knowledgeable with photography in order to articulate the issue and identify the problem.. Most posts keeps talking about the protective film.... Arghh
However the issue is not constantly there for me... It's almost as if the lens module is mounted loosely, and it can go out of alignment relative to the sensor, creating a tilt shift effect.
Sometimes it seems if i shake the phone, or tap a few times on the camera lens, the issue goes away...
Very frustrating. Did you ever resolve it?
Thought it might be the ois acting up... However i couldn't disable it for stills...
I have the auto focus issue as well. shaking the device or tapping the bottom a few (hard) times makes the cam focus properly. Problem is there all the time, although after focussing properly gone, then reappearing after camera app close..
I've also noticed this issue. I have more problems focusing on the left (Samsung logo) side of my camera sensor. If I flip the phone over, the same side of the device produces blurry details while the other captures it crisp.
http://imgur.com/kEnHKg2
http://imgur.com/dF9jHBD
Notice how the bag is clear in one, blurry in the other. The Samsung logo side of my device seems to always be blurry in photos of objects about a meter or more away. I have been unable to focus altogether on distant objects where the entire image is blurry.
I've had the same problem and I asked for a replacement. It's a defective unit, now my phone's camera works great.

Disable Wide Angle Shots

Ok we all have the same phone and the same lense front and back
This is specifically for the FRONT camera ... we all know the pictures are distorted ... its squashed from the center and appears long at the edges...
owing to the fact that it has a Wide Angle Lense
Which looks very bad during selfies
We cant change the lense as its a hardware part.
But is there an app .. or can we develop an app that corrects the distortion created by the wide lense and give us a straigt propotional shot ?
Im uploading a picture from another website showing the distortion of the lense. its not my own pic.
As im into Bodybuilding and also i take a lot of selfies ... my pictures look weird on my phone compared to my friends. My body looks normal on friends phone whereas it looks out of propotion on mine.
Lets discuss this ... cause im seriously considering a iPhone 6 over this phone now. but obv im falling back cause of budget issues.
its weird No one else hates the Distortion during selfies ?
a small bump up
I doubt there will be any way to fix it if it is the lens itself, if it's firmware, custom ROMs might be able to do it, Xposed Framework etc
No idea how though, I had noticed I looked like Bruce Forsyth a while back, but never took much notice as I don't use the front camera for much more than daft pics on whatsapp anyway
Hi all,
I am also interested about the resolution of this feature: there's no way to disable the wide angle? you have found a solution?
thanks in advance

S7/Edge Camera Shots of Moving Objects

Has anyone tested how well the camera performs when taking shots of moving objects? In my experience, every single android phone (including S6) has been poor when taking shots of moving objects like infants/toddlers indoors. Whereas the iphone does much better under this scenario. Can the S7 compete with iphone when it comes to shooting moving objects in less than ideal lighting?
I went to a BestBuy this weekend with my girlfriend and had her take a picture of me walking past her (At normal walking pace) on the other side of the demo table. Picture came out crisp and clear. Looked like I wasn't moving. No blur at all. Haven't compared to iPhone but I've seen from videos that the S7 auto focus is much faster. Was also able to tap the camera button quickly without lag.
Even better, my wife was highly impressed when she snapped a photo of our always active kids when we were at the Samsung Experience store and the photos came out perfect!! No motion blur. The kids were in focus and clear =)
Here are two shots I just took cars going about 30mph I work on the beach.
If you're indoors in a dimly lit room, it's going to have some blur. Even DSLR's have trouble here as you need a wide aperture and a high ISO to capture moving objects in low light. From the samples though, it looks promising.
Very true. But I will say this is probably the best camera in a smart phone.
This photo I just took is brighter than what I see lol. And clarity is excellent.

I'm surprised we haven't had the S7 downer crew in here telling everyone how bad the photos are and that we should all buy a Nexus 6P or S6 Edge instead.
Hard to give his true mind or negative opinion when "fanboy kikoo lol" report us as troll and make us censored by moderator... but i can try...
I don't had a problem with s6 to have my subjects totally crips (but im using very rarely the basic photo app)... so i don't understand really this.
I have more problems with the pic posted by razball...

S7 camera is essentially what the 6P would have been had it had OIS. Big mistake by Google to omit such an important camera feature.

I haven't personally tried the 6P camera, but it seems to suffer from the same problem of shooting moving objects/kids indoors:
https://www.reddit.com/r/Nexus6P/comments/3scwc8/nexus_6p_rear_camera_focus/ It's unfortunate, but the iPhone is on another level when taking shots like this (any wife/mom with an iPhone will say the same), which is why I'm wondering if the S7/Edge and it's Dual Pixel auto focus can finally match Apple for these types of shots.
