[Q] Can capacitive buttons be remapped? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

Coming from almost any other Android phone, Samsung can be difficult to get used to. The capacitive buttons, menu and back are swapped on Samsung's as opposed to almost every other phone.
Is there a way to swap the buttons without root?

Probably not. You will get used to it though. What is harder to accept is the clicky home button and inaccurate/slow fingerprint sensor.

Not that I've seen, you need root to mess with key mapping.

My fingerprint scanner is fast and I'd say 90% accurate as long as its dry (been a few times my fingers are wet after eating/drinking that it is unable to read). My problem is sometimes the home button clicks, but does not register. It's not add loss of a click Fogg so I think I'm just not pressing right lol.

Yes. You can swap them. I do it. Use all in one gestures and galaxy buttons. One will swap, the other will turn off the backlight so you don't get confused. No root needed (obviously).

Mine is/was really slow and only seems to work 50 to 75% of the time. Sometimes it takes two or three tries to get it to work. I also hated seeing the Lockscreen before it unlocked. Overall it was a crappy experience and one of the biggest reasons I'm selling it. Oddly enough, TouchPiss isn't one of them.

This gets it done. Thanks.

What about an option to play next / last media track by using the volume keys? Or long press home for torch. I'm on a rooted s3 still and am looking to upgrade but I think remapped buttons will be one of the biggest things I'll miss from xposed.

Thanks for the suggestion. That app is extremely unreliable and not much use though. Im slowly getting used to the home button.

Is it possible to map a long press of the buttons to a specific button like 'switch to last app' or 'kill foreground app' etc?

Mine isn't loose or anything, Maybe you should go back to store and see what they think?
It is kind of low but I use the rock quicksand case which leaves the bottom area open so no issues there.
The physical home button is pretty annoying. All capacitive like in the One X was much better.

If you don't like the home button, you can use this program called Task Changer to put a virtual home right above the physical one:

Given the great placement of the power button in Samsung phones, that's nothing to write home about.
The home button works perfectly. It has a positive feel you just don't get with the capacitive buttons.

I might use these if I didn't have a choice but I have friends still using old captivates and Nexus S's and the like.. Buttons all still work just fine, same as they did when they bought the phone. Not sure why people want to "save" the physical keys. I prefer to use touch recovery as well, but only because its faster..

The hardware buttons used to wear out on the HD2, probably still do, but that's partially due to it's incredible OS longevity.
Use GMD Gesturecontrol for everything. Incredible app.
If your worried about your buttons wearing out, why not be worried about the screen, battery or speaker wearing out? I'm so worried now I just not gonna use my phone at all anymore. Wait, now I'm worried about my legs wearing out. Forget walking.

Wow really, someone softbricked during a flash and it broke their physical keys? Sounds like there's more to that like maybe perhaps they flashed something they shouldn't have But even still that's a different scenario- your physical DONT work. My point was, having your hard keys or physical keys stop working is a pretty rare occurrence. I've never heard if it. Now dropping your phone, f****ing up your phone so the keys don't work is a different story. But as far as "saving" your physical keys.. there's no such thing. What your doing now is not using them... which I guess you could say is saving them... but not really, its more like an alternative

I've never ever heard of physical buttons wearing out. That's a defect and shouldn't happen, within reason. I expect my keys or buttons to last as long as I have the phone. Seriously... how many uses can a person expect to have with a button on a device? Nowadays things are built much better than 10 or even 5 years ago... It/they shouldn't wear out. Not on a phone. Not on a phone that is only a couple years old.

what i mean is if someone already have broken buttons and flashed his phone and suddenly something went wrong and softbricked it, you cant access the recovery or download mode because you have broken keys.
i did not say you dont used your keys, this apps will only help you to used the physical keys often that will save them from wearing out.
i think hardware not created equal maybe someone's key last forever someone in a year or two or broke their keys after warranty period.
this tip is not for all though..

No seriously, HTC One, fantastic device, everything is amazing, but again that power button on the top. Why? :crying: :crying: :crying:

I like the button placement on the top left. Last year on the One X is was on the right side... That was a bit hard to reach.
They included the IR Blaster in the Power Button. That could be a reason why its on the top.

It could be, but you'd have a landscape remote. Power button placement should take precedence over a gimmicky feature most people won't use. I don't speak for everyone, but even as a geeky person, I'd rather reach for the remote than pull my phone out of my pocket, unlock it, and launch a remote control app to do the same thing.

Seriously? I've been wishing they'd do this for years. It's a universal (programmable) remote too so I can do my TV, Stereo (which I actually use a lot) and Roku box. It's a great feature.
Plus, if I'm sitting down, especially on a couch, I usually have already pulled my phone out of my pocket.

I wonder if the issue is really just hypothetical, as in the people who object don't have their One yet. I guess I'm lucky cause I had a Nokia and an iPhone before this so I've had the button on the top for several years. I'm concerned too about how tall the phone is but I have a case already and it isn't a problem to shift the phone slightly to get my finger up there (I have small hands).
That, the battery and the MicroSD card are non issues for me, but then I might be in the minority too. I've never been more excited to own or impressed with the design of a phone. In fact it's a little embarrassing how hard it is to wait two weeks.

It was still on the top in the one x, just the right side of the top compared to the left now. (it's always been top right iirc for htc and iphones) minus maybe small exception. I think right top is better for right handers... But as htc knows... Most people are left handed... /sarcasm this must be why they chose the left side now.

Actually, top left is better for right-handers because it allows you to fully stretch your finger, rather than cramping it in an awkward position if it's on the top right. But personally, if there was no IR Blaster, I would prefer it on the right side of the phone because it's so much easier and more natural to hit it with your thumb, with the way you hold a phone.

Yeah, that depends I guess on individual. Having owned htc phones and an ipod, and being right handed I prefer it be on the right side... So probably more about hand size. I've tried to hit the top left of my current phone as if it was the htc one to see the comfort... Doesn't work for me

Really? Okay great... Pretty long time ago that I have played with HTC devices. But anyway, this is the problem. I have root, can modify files in the system directory. But all those changes are undone when rebooting the devices, i.e. the changes are not permanent. Because the keymap files are loaded when booting the device there's really no way to change anything.
Anyone? Non permanent write access ?

Criticisms about HTC's choice in buttons

So I got the HTC One today and I have to say the build quality is out of this world. But I have a few gripes about it and I was wondering if anyone had the same opinions. First the feedback from the softkeys is really weak. I barely feel the vibration when I hit the key. This is especially an issue when I have to double tap the home key for the multitasking screen. I'm also getting incredibly irritated with the location of the power key. It literally could not be further for me to reach when I'm using the phone. I came from an S3 where the power button was on the side and feedback from the soft keys is always a good intensity. Maybe I'm being too critical but I'm wondering if anyone else is getting bothered by these issues.

I too am not the biggest fan of the power button being at the top. I have my screens set up to be used one handed, but the power button ruins it
I switched to Revolution HD ROM, which has a feature to use the volume up/down keys to wake the phone up, but I am slightly concerned about performance. I might be wrong, but I think the stock ROM was smoother (especially when opening and closing the apps draw). I will compare it with a friend's phone today.
I feel so sad for this
OK, had a look at the stock rom and the same lag is there. Will stick with Revolution HD Rom.
Either they fix this or I don't feel them unresponsive. They are working good enough for me.

The power button is at the top so that the you can point the phone straight forward when using the IR blaster. Not sure why everyone is overlooking this. As for the buttons, I don't see a problem with them. The lack of a menu key annoyed me but I re-enabled the long press back for menu and it's been fine.
We could have one more button yes. But there are phones with power button on the left so that's not a "mistake"

I was about to say the same thing...it would have been great to have the power button on the side about two-thirds up (Samsung Galaxy style) and the IR blaster on the top. It would have also been cool if they had put a second wide-angle IR blaster on the back of the phone (for example somewhere near the camera lens). The gyroscope could determine which IR port would be active...when the phone is horizontal, it would use the IR port on top, and when the phone is upright and in the normal viewing position it would switch to the IR port on the back. This would permit you to hold your phone in a normal manner and push the remote app buttons without having to swing your phone horizontally and point it at your equipment like a traditional remote control, which is kind of silly when you think about it.

Exactly. Everyone needs to stop complaining about where the power button is, pick up ya damn phone and turn it on and then everything you need is well within reach.
For me personally I don't care I like the button where it is, I usually leave my phone on a flat surface and when I pick it up or turn it on my index finger is already in the general area. NBD.

2. There is no native exchange email support. Anyone know why?

The home button sucks on mine too. Doesn't always register touches. Useless as a fingerprint reader too. I am using onscreen buttons.
Don't know about the email: I use Nine (by far the best exchange email app) which works fine.

I just got mine. The Home buttin is pretty fine. You have to get learn how it works.. Because the home buttin is under the FingerPrint Sensor. I don't have any problems, maybe at the start but now it is ok! As for exchange email you just use GMAIL app!
EDIT:
For exchange email , download Gmail exchange apk from APKMIRROR and install it. Don't forget to open unknown sources first.

Hi, got my OnePlus two today.
I have two issues so far.
1. The home button seems to only work 1 or 2 times out of 5 presses. Should I RMA?
2. There is no native exchange email support. Anyone know why?

Same issue for me. Its grounding because my hand is also on the metal frame of the phone. If I put the phone down and tap the home button it registers, same if the phone is flat in my hand and not touching the frame, works perfectly. Really annoying.
Major home button issues for me too. I had to switch to on screen buttons because I was getting too many missed home button taps and it was driving me mad.
Wondering if it's a hardware issue with all of them or just some. Maybe the people who don't have issue just have oilier or sweatier hands as very dry hands seem to make the home button less sensitive.

Got my op2 yesterday and was fully expecting to also have this issue but I don't. I have the USA op2.

good to hear, maybe that's why they slowed up the invites and fixed it quietly.
My home button is working flawlessly
I think it's about getting used to this home button. In starting I too had issues with home button but now I don't. Just give it some time.
If you have oily or sweaty hands and not really dry ones then you probably won't have an issue ... until winter.

Haha! Yeah. True. The official forums are full of people getting really irate with this.
Mine's fine -- acts up every now and then. I've added an assistive touch button instead of activating the on-screen nav buttons. Saves space and is generally not intrusive -- sort of like the way Apple's own assistive touch button is.

Agreed. Since I started pressing instead of lightly tapping it works fine.

I love this phone but problems with Home button are a little bit terrifying....Actually I've put my OP2 into gel case and problem with home button is gone...so it is really because of hand touching the bezel...WTH :?
I just believe that the bezel is a touchable one and we will receive some kind of nice feature like grab and squeze a phone to make a screenshot or something...OP please, do not kill my faith in You...

I wish it was a feature, but honestly, it seems like a design flaw. It doesn't seem like it's affecting all the devices, but it definitely is affecting the one that I received today. If I push the home button like a physical button it works fine, but if I tap like a capacitive button it doesn't work often. My guess is that there's no way around this, and that Oneplus won't consider it a problem.

What batch do you have? Mine is dated 08.10.2015 on the back of the box. I'm wondering if it's device specific.

Wow are you are the one I was looking for, I ordered Honor 7 from small for UK and meantime I got Invite for Onwplus 2 which make me confused and I don't want to sell my account to someone so I ordered two days ago and not processed yet, same thing with Honor 7 ordered on 2nd but still waiting
I like both phone but price for Honor 7 is simply just blow OP2 and premium body, Irda, FM radio, Cat 6 and fast charge so Honor 7 is my 1st choice, I am plan to sell OP2 as it comes without even opening as there is NO point keep two phone without NFC as Android pay is just around the corner, As you are having OP2 and H7 I would like opportunity so ask you about with
Which one have better fingerprint reader?
Which is one have better camera quality?
Which one have better screen?
Sound, audio etc.?
Do you think is impossible to put two SIM + 1 SD altogether in slot as somebody scribe in Chinese forum ?
can you advise which one to keep ?
