Do Not Disturb and Toast notifications - Nexus 6P Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I have been looking everywhere trying to find a solution to this. I hope someone can help. I use Do Not Disturb mode when sleeping, as many do. However, while all the "noises" are stopped, I still get pop-up messages for email, texts, phone calls, etc. I have my phone set for priority mode, with only a few select numbers able to ring through. That works, but the pop-ups mentioned still come through. In a dark room, those pop-ups are VERY bright, even on a very small portion of the screen. I know I can turn them off within the apps, but I do use them when not sleeping. Is there a way around this, or am I stuck?
Thank you anyone!

So here, you want to disable the toast/heads-up notifications, while your device is in DND mode?

Yes, that's exactly what I'm looking for. I know I can do it manually, by turning them off, and then having to turn them back on again after I wake up. This doesn't seem to be the most ideal way though, in my opinion. I would have thought Do Not Disturb actually meant "Do Not Disturb", but apparently not completely. Unless I'm missing something.
Any suggestions?

I am using N, and clearly not sure whether MM has this option or not.
Try going to Settings > Sound > Do not disturb > Black visual disturbances
I hope, there you will find what you need.

Thank you for the information - that sounds perfect. Unfortunately, that doesn't appear to be an option in MM, but at least I know it's coming! Maybe it's time to take the plunge into N. I've been reluctant since it would be on my daily driver, and not sure about stability, etc. Maybe I should just give it a try. Thanks again.

Two app requests

Hi,
Could anybody recommend any apps to do the following:
1) Turn off mobile services (Eg, disconnect from the network) between certain hours? I would effectively like the phone in airplane mode during night time.
2) Vibrate every XX minutes when I notification arrives - Eg, if I miss the (faint) vibrate I'd like it to do as my previous phone did; Vibrate, for example, every 5 minutes stopping only when the notification has been acknowledged.
If any of these are possible please point me in the direction of the relevant apps.
If not and anybody feels a coding change... Feel free
Cheers.
SPD phone suite will do both.
Cannot seem to find that app in the Market. In the UK if that matters.
Any ideas?
Any alternative software?
Cheers.

Don't know of anything to turn airplane mode on. But what I've done is use Locale to make my phone completely silent at night, then turn the sounds back on at a specific time in the morning.
dgAlert will let you customize vibrate and repeating vibrate for text messages.
Oh sorry didnt know the dream was Android !
SPB is here http://beta.spbsoftwarehouse.com/products/phonesuite/
Thanks for the replies. Will check out dgAlert - If that can repeated vibrate for calls too that would be immense... Will definitely check it tonight.
About Locale; I tried that however setting it to (For example) make the phone silent between 2300 - 0700. It makes the phone silent at 2300 but does not re-enable the ringer at 0700 (Or at least the "silent" icon still remains - One of the two!). Is this the correct behaviour? Or should it be automatically turning the ringer back at at 0700? I'd imagine I can work around by having "Sleep" at 2300-0700 and "Don't Sleep" at 0700-2300 but I'm curious as to why it doesn't work currently. Should simply "Sleep" between 2300-0700 work?
Cheers.
PS - This is non-rooted if that makes a difference.
With regards to locale, did you make sure you placed a default setting for it to revert back to? I had similar problems before I told local what the default settings outside of the conditions I imposed where.... (wifi would NEVER turn back on... etc)

I set up another Locale scenario to re-enable sound 1 minute after the "sleep" one ended. I don't know if there's an easier way (default settings were mentioned, that might work), but it works for now.
Thanks for the replies guys - You got it spot on; It hadn't any defaults! Set the defaults and now Locale works like a charm
Now I have locale turn off wifi bluetooth etc at "Sleep" and turn them back on afterwards... Sorted!
My only outstanding request now is the repeated vibrate - To clarify this further I would actually like an app that will send a repeated vibrate every XX mins for any notification in the notification bar (Eg, SMS, email, missed call). dgAlert may be able to manage it for SMS but I'm not sure about for other things. It also appears to have problems with other apps from a quick google.
Any software that will allow repeated vibration alerts (Until acknowledged - Eg, removed from notifications) for all notifications? That would be simply brilliant!
Cheers.
Just wanted to tip you off about Bedtime.
When you run this program, it only lets phonecalls through. Everything else is kept silent. You will also get a nice full screen watch
Thats great - Thanks; I'll be sure to check it out!
Now have many solutions for the night time problem... Only now to find a real good solution for repeated notifications - Any ideas welcome! Thanks...

Can someone post the APK for Locale? I don't have access to the market.
Cheers!
Really after something to do repeated vibrate on notifications... Anything available? I've checked the market but I'm not sure if something exists which does it but not exlusively (Hence hard to tell from program name).
Any suggestions?
Cheers.
there is DgAlert, SMS POPUP (the new version has repeat notification) a few others i can not think of right now.
As far as I can tell, though, they only repeat notifications for SMS?
Any chance they now repeat for all notifications? If not, any others?
Cheers.

Silent mode on Nexus 6 workaround

Hi there!
I know there are a few threads about it, BUT I thought as no one obviously knows about the workaround for putting the Nexus 6 in silent mode without the need of an app, I decided to make a seperate thread. It's working on Stock ROM, you don't have to be rooted.
This is how it works:
- Put the phone all the way down to vibrate with the volume down key
- Then tap once on the volume up key so you are on - lets call it "volume step one"
- Now reboot your phone
Congrats, silent mode is back! Unfortunately, you have to do it all over again, if you change the volume once...

Wait, am I missing something here?
Why not hit the volume button then select "none" from the options of "none, priority, all"?
Enters silent mode pretty easily for me!

I think what people liked about silent mode was it allowed Alarms through. "None" means no sounds or alarms. Priority mode with just Alarms set as priority isn't a workaround because some Apps can still emit sounds. The main problem with this new notification system aside from the fact that it eliminated a couple of real world use case scenarios is it is just flat out not intuitive.

I use Tasker a lot too, and for many things. And I can't remember now, but what about vibration? I mean in "real" silent mode, vibration is off. If you only set media and ringtone to 0, does your phone still vibrate? I mean in Lollipop you can't even turn vibration off, right?
So my phone is on silent without vibration, so that only my G Watch R vibrates on calls and notifications, with alarms going off on the phone as usual...

That's correct, there currently is no silent, I did read that they were doing something with the sound settings in 5.1 but not exactly sure what that will look like. I am pretty sure you could get silent back some how if you were to root the phone but I am not ready to go there yet. Other than using a little battery I don't mind the vibration, as is I can get 2 days on a charge without too much effort.

Specifically for apps, you have to flag them as priority for their notifications to go through. Otherwise, in Sounds & Notifications settings you can specify "Priority Interruptions" which you can select system Events and reminders (alarms), Calls and Messages you want to go through.
I use it for meetings and class... so far it has yet to allow a notification that I haven't set to priority.

Still they all vibrate, right?
If your turn on priority mode, no apps will push notifications to you, unless you prioritize them.

Nope, no notifications even vibrate lol. Priority mode means, no notifications will wake the device or vibrate unless you prioritize them.

What the other poster probably meant is that apps can bypass Priority mode. This has been thoroughly documented, and according to Google it's "working as intended". Some apps have already fixed it, like Whatsapp, and very recently, FB messenger, but other big ones like Viber and Skype are yet to do it. It's a big nuisance that one has to depend on app developers to conform in order for such an important OS function to work correctly.

You can get the app Nights Keeper, it will do the old silent mode and more. The free version should be enough for simple silent mode, but the premium is only a couple bucks. The actionable notification and the widget are awesome. No root required.

Is there a "Do Not Disturb" setting in Sounds and Notifications? I don't have mine yet, so I can't check for myself. but that has tripped my up a few times on my HTC 10.
If Do Not Disturb is not on, look for a setting called "Smart settings".... it is under General > Smart Functions [Label] > Smart Settings.... if you set the home screen settings to enable the Smart Bulletin Screen you can also get to it from there
Appreciate the replies folks..I just downloaded Textra, but the stock messaging App is still silenced

Maybe I'll do the same cause I'd rather not use textra
This is a feature of android 7.0. When you receive the message, swipe down from the top to show your notifications, press and hold the messaging notification and then you should get an option to select that states Don't silence. It's probably set to Show Notifications silently.
Thank you sir!!

Only vibrate without silence switch?

Hi all
It seems that the only way to get ring volume switched to vibrate only, is via the switch on the left side of the phone? I understand that this is the intended method, but that vibrate only cannot be configured in the regular profile shocks me?
The silence mode features an icon in the status bar, and enforces a whole set of other options, really? I understand that the switch is a design decision, but that is in no way the same to me as taking away regular well known usage of any android phone since dawn of time - the vibrate option in the normal 'volume profile'....
Any input on this? Am I missing something, or am I the only one having an issue here?
The lack of swipe across status bar to lower screen brightness is a different thing, but I'm sure developers will bring this back, at least with a custom kernel (EX for example).
Kind Regards

I'll Growler to like it... I'm pretty sure..
Actually there's this app that can do this without you touching the switch. Sound Profile. I have no idea what makes it work but it does.
Now if only I could make Tasker do this...
wondering the same, had a similar problem, see https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3629258
Solved it with tasker.
Trigger "silent ~ off" -> set a non empty ringtone.
trigger "silent ~ on" (this is true for dnd and silent mod): change ringtone to empty (silent) ringtone
I came across the same question and the only way I've found to enable silent/ vibrate mode without the slider is using a widget.
Ok, the attatched screenshot is a catlog of things happening when switching from silent to do not disturb. Notice the easily recognized event at the top, ThreeKeyHW.. That's whats triggering all the following actions. This can be intercepted by Tasker, and manipulated with :good:

why bother reading logcat (which might eat your battery)? for me, testing two variables in tasker allows me to determine the switch position:
%SILENT ~ off we are loud
%SILENT ~ on and %VOLR!=0 we are in dnd
%SILENT ~ on and %VOLR = 0 we are in silent mode

You have more Tasker experience than I do
Question, in your opinion, is any other tasker alternative worth spending money or time on, or is it just a matter of learning Tasker? My point being that Tasker is THE tool - but also quite difficult to manage at times... Hard to navigate in, I personally believe. But on the other hand, it can do ANYTHING, which you cannot say about ANY of the alternatives...

Hi,
no, not more experience, but I found a posting for a similar question for the oneplus 3 where someone suggested testing the %INTERRUPT variable to determine if it is on value "priority" (meaning it is in dnd mode). I tested this and just created a task that shows a flash message with a number of variables of which I thought they could be interesting. Turned out that INTERRUPT was never set, but this is how I found out about SILENT and VOLR.
Regarding tasker alternatives: I haven't used an automation tool for maybe three years now, before I had only done simple stuff with tasker, so it was my first pick and it worked nicely - so I cannot say anything about alternatives...
me personally would love just bottom to top: all, vibrate only, nothing. no DND etc. another thing that bothers me is that when in silent/vibrate, I can't get Textra to use a certain pattern for messages coming in. oos defaults to two little vibrations. any ideas?

Is there no one here that can actually help with this? People just keep leaving short oneliners without any substance ("Just apply the thingy and it'll work"). It's not helpful, it's just frustrating as **** since none of us others get this to work.
If you do know how to do this, for real, then share your XML for your profile and/or tasks. Or write up a step by step.

Notifications not popping up when screen is asleep.

Hey guys.
Just got my new S10+ and I've notice that when my screen is asleep, I don't receive any notifications until I either lift the device or push the power button to wake it up.
I've checked my battery optimization settings, made sure the apps I wanted weren't controlled in the background
I have the regular S10 but I get that too, mainly with gmail but even now when I used the phone the notification of a new gmail doesn't come up. sometimes they come through, half the time not. never had such problems with my old phone
yep, same thing here on 10+. driving me nuts !! and edge light doesn't work as well.
i tried every option and can't figure it out what's the problem.
I also have never seen the edge lightning when the screen is off

You have to be more specific with your issue... But, go into your message setting and make sure message pop up is turned on. If it's turned on, it could be a glitch. Just go into your your phone's settings, hit apps, find messages and then tap on it. Then find storage and hit Clear cache and storage. See if that helps.

Yes, pop up setting is turned on but with gmail is a hit or miss, sometimes I get notified, sometimes not and it's mostly when screen is off. my main problem is with another app that I'm not receiving any notifications even though everything is enabled and I cleared cache, re-installed and what not. I have no problem getting notifications from whatsapp, missed calls, sms etc.
Also, when I clear the notifications, the badges on the app's icons also dissapear even though I didn't yet go inside the app to see it. is it possible to keep showing the badges after I clear the notifications? I don't know if it's unique to android pie but it shouldn't be like this.

I believe that the pop up messages only work on certain applications to my knowledge. I've seen messages come up but, I've never really payed attention to my gmail yet because i usually get notified on my galaxy watch. The phone is still too new even for me. I'll test it out some more.
I'd just be happy to get all notifications from all my apps and keep badges even after I cleared the notification.
yesterday i saw edge light for first time, but it only works when screen is ON. what really cancels the purpose of it.

Yup, the feature is enabled, and I have assigned 6 apps to show notifications with the light. They do work when the screen is on, but not when they're on.
I got workaround by installing Glimpse Notification. The edge lighting showing while screen is off but what disappoint me it not showing the notification text.
My s7 with s9 rom showing edge lighting with notification text without using any apps though. I think maybe is pie rom? Or just s10 rom?
