Restarting constantly- first impressions - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions & Answers

So I did something the IOS guy in me hadn't done since 2011, went on the hook for a new s7.
I'm having a some restarting issues in this first 24 hour drive. Restarts every hour I have in my hand. Last night I set it up on my night stand as a clock (with that nice always on display) and the darn thing restarted on its own within three minutes of laying it down .
Sometimes when watching or listening to media it will start a screeching sound and I have to hold down the power button to force to recharge.
Also had a camera failure. I read on the forums that could be because of turning on "smart stay" , so I turned that off.
Is there some way I can try to figure out what app is causing it to crash? It appears I can be using any app or doing about anything. Heck, I got a keyboard error as I was typing this post!

Buggy system maybe. Try reseting settings or do a hard reset
Sent from my SM-G930P using XDA-Developers mobile app

I reset all apps settings and It appeared to hold off for most of the morning. Next strategy I will try to employ is to Uninstall and reinstall any apps that close or create problems.....the first culprit was Facebook!
One thing I read in another post was to disable "auto update " of apps. Can anyone comment on that being or not being a good idea?
Last night I took this thing out of my pocket and it was trying to self activate!

Thanks. What kind of sprint apps, I don't think I've opened any of them?
Sent from my SM-G930P using Tapatalk

All amazon apps, and all sprint apps except zone and voice-mail.
If that doesn't work, do a hard reset. You can backup data to Google so you can restore after or back up to samsung
Sent from my SM-G930P using XDA-Developers mobile app

I can do a hard reset, but what do you mean by backup to google? Thats not actually backing up my apps is it? If there was a way to back up apps I would hard reset, but man....I just bought this and downloaded all of those darn things!

Yes Google will backup your apps too. When u log back in for the first time setting up the phone Google will automatically re download all of ur previously installed apps.

Thanks, I thought so, I just missed that prompt somehow- maybe the phone restarted lol. This isn't good for Samsung and me- I've wiped this phone many times in 7 days, including installing apps one by one and I still have restarts and prompts that different apps have stopped. I've even typed posts up for different forums and been unable to post.....because the phone restarted.
Been to see the Samsung rep at best buy, they are kind of stumped.
The phone doesn't do this in safe mode, but it still restarts when I try and download individual apps after a wipe.

So I've been reading about the crashing apps, even while reading a website this phone restarted lol. You posted somewhere about a package disabled. What exactly does that do, might that help.

It freezes or disables almost any app on the phone including apps that cannot be unistalled. Search for it in the play store. If u message me your email I can send you the xml file that you can import to the program that automatically disables the same apps I did. I have been running this for a month with no problems.

Thanks for the help on email Visionikz03, I did purchase that android app. I wish this store had a happy ending- that S7 is back in customer return pile and Best Buy and I"m back to IOS today. I had the very first G1 ten years ago or whenever it was- I was really hoping to enjoy that phone. It never, ever handled the streaming apps I liked like iHeart, DirecTV , or Foxnews app. Not even with a wipe and installing apps one by one. It was a Sprint device, not that that mattered- but what could be the problem, early adopter syndrome maybe? Maybe developers hadn't ironed out every bug with their app on the Samsung devices? Is there such as thing as a bad phone?

There's always a possibility of getting a 'lemon'. The hardware on the phone you had could have been bad. Who knows. It might have been worth exchanging to find out.

Well, I believe that the policy of the store was I could only get one return within 14 days. I didn't want to chance it. Honestly, I don't think I've ever had a "bad" phone – except for maybe a speaker or display failure. There are a lot of issues with restarts with this phone right now as I read on the forums.

Sounds like you shoulda stuck with the iphone, I don't see what benefits you would have coming over to android if you're not prepared to root and try ROMs, yes samsung is a joke, but I can honestly say I have never regretted leaving iOS for android once.........except when the phone hangs during A PHONE CALL!!!! you know the thing it was actually made for - making and receiving phone calls, Not a regular occurrence I must admit but quite an ironic defect of many new ROMs I've tried in the past, LOL

You don't need to be rooted to use PC Odin to install the latest official ROM.
There are great keyboards out there...instead of just one on the iPhone. Look at Thumb Keyboard or Swiftkey. There is even an iPhone keyboard...gasp.
And since you don't want to root (you can unroot for warranty purposes and Samsung is none the wiser....) checkout MyBackup Pro in the market.
Samsung - a joke as a company?!?! Do us a favor and never, ever buy a Motorola phone. If you are going ballistic over a Galaxy, you'll kill yourself with a Droid...
you can just copy all the files from your sd to your computer very very very easily using a usb cable, have you never used a computer before? Or alternatively download dropbox and use that to back up your phone. Little bit of research about how android works might actually benefit you. About the updates, if you wanna get all the amazing features of android compared to iphone, you'll have to put up with the update schedules, but updates don't really matter on android you still have more functions that ios.
Wow ... cool it guys. OP is simply used to the apple way of doing things. Give him some time to explore the wonderful world of Android iam sure he'll start to love it.
OP please google a bit or check the play store you will find the solutions for all your complaints.
Edit
I just checked your other posts, almost all of it is about Samsung not updating the note to ics.
Why do you want the stock ics so badly ?
Do you honestly believe that ics will solve all your problems magically?
Believe me stock ics is a can of worms that is better left unopened . (personal opinion pls don't flame me guys )
but If you are so desperate please flash any custom roms which suits your needs, I recommend paranoid
Just to add, since i got my note i have had to firmware updates. One to 2.3.6 and then the 4.0.3 update. This is since April. Now you tell me of any iphone that has had 2 updates in that timeframe. (including major updates like ics )....
And apple can update easier as in total there are only 5 phone's ,of which only a couple of model get the update. Think his many different droids there are!

i wanted new set of icons....with flashy colours...i just installed a ROM....and my friend has an iphone and he wanted to change the icons too....o]h wait...you can only change WALLPAPERS in that... thats AWESOME
ACTUALLY I have the Note and I have never rooted. I don't find it necessary. I have an application called Folder Sync, and what it does is it backs up my files every night (especially camera files, but you can set it up to your entire SD card) to Dropbox or SugarSync, it has a lot of options for providers. The benefit is that you don't manually need to connect to a computer or anything. You will always have your files synced up. I even have it so when I delete a file off of the server or my computer, it'll be reflected as well on the phone. I hated having to have to connect my phone to my computer every time I wanted to update a folder, sync something, or download something. Every night my phone waits until 4AM, plugged in and has wifi on to sync my 32 gig SD card with its content.
As for the keyboard, it might take you some time to, you know, actually get used to a normal keyboard. Apple had good autocorrect. But I'd rather take the more accurate typing space on the Note over the iPhone's smart predictive text. Apart from that, I have AutoText Replacements which means I can type ty and thank you will come out. I have "putmail" and my mailing address comes out. This is really helpful, and it can't be done on the iPhone, but yes on Android. Try Ultra Keyboard, that's what I use. Tons of themes, settings and it's fairly intuitive.
There are a lot of benefits to Android. If you're just angry about ICS not out yet in your region, I'm sorry, but many times it doesn't only depend on Samsung. It depends also on the carriers, which most bend over backwards for Apple only because they're what's hot and hip right now.
I'd say that if you're easily frustrated, stick to iOS. If you like to tinker a little, stay with Android. The possibilities are endless with apps and configurations.
Once again, I don't root because I think Android is open enough the way it is. You can download an original rom and install it without voiding your warranty, using PC Odin.

This is as close as Im getting to a rotten Apple

This won't give you full peace of mind compare to Rooted.
Agree, If you are noob then should avoid from custom things and playing of different mods.
There is nothing wrong to have rooted Note with rest of completely stock.
Here are some must reason to root (for me)
- Backup you are creating is just additional data, you can get it again once you have application installed on device. And this data is having rare chance to get delete. even you format(hard reset) this data still survives. Only thing which is better to have is backup of Camera (DCMI folder) which you can't get(here folder sync really need). But i do save it on ext memory card, so in case of anything goe wrong still it will escape.
Now if you are rooted, then you can schedule your backup tottaly different way. Like my system stuff backup will start three days of weeks at 4AM, which backup my contacts, SMSs or watever sytem data.
And rest of three days it backup all newer installed application + data (here you will get app + setting, after restoring even you don't need to enter credential, OR won't lose levels you have completed in games)
- What I need is google Maps, In my country still google don't providing me navigation (just direction), but with moded Map I can get it. And yes root is needed for that.
-Remove lots of bloatware from stock system
-Stoping unnecessary auto starting application on boot.
Reagarding warranty, anytime you can just flash stock ROM with PC Odin and your root will erase and you get warranty back

Mediaserver battery drain help

Been having horrible battery life lately and have been led to believe that the media server process is to blame. 8-12% battery usage on average and have searched and searched for a fix to no avail. Formatted SD twice, factory reset twice, and flashed back to Google's stock image to no avail. No idea what's causing it and it appears to randomly wake the device up from deep sleep every once in a while overnight. Any help would be appreciated thanks.

Been having horrible battery life lately and have tried both paranoid and AOKP with the same results, 45 minutes of screen time on at 77 percent battery currently... I used to get 6+hours of screen time and now get about 3.5-4. This could be accountable to 'mediaserver'. No idea what it is or how to get rid of it but usually takes up 8-12% of battery. So far stock still produces the best battery life but it's still pretty bad. Any tablet ROMs that produce good battery life? Thanks for anyone's input!

Dude, it's pretty obvious that the problem lies not with your ROM, but with your 'media server' or any other processes that suck battery life. There are threads on the 'media server' battery issue that you might want to search for.

It was recently introduced. I remember not too long ago this wasn't an issue. Then out ta nowhere flashing a nightly it appeared. However I'm told it is things polling the sdcard for images or as the title suggests media. There really isn't a fix, that I new of or come across.

My Solution
I have the Galaxy Note 2. My battery used to be at 40% after 15 hours of continuous use because the battery is 3,100mAh. One day I started noticing "Media" consuming 30-50% of my battery drain and the phone was always getting hot. I thought I solved the problem a couple days ago, but it came back and I couldn't figure out how to delete this post, so here's an update lol.
Things I've tried
I tried using Titanium Backup and Freezing "Media," "Downloads," and a couple of other apps/services/processes, but that usually had no effect, or just crashed other apps.
I tried downloading F5 Media Scanner and freezing my media scanner, but I got impatient and just uninstalled it. My media never showed up, and I didn't know what I was doing.
Some people said Google Play Music was causing it, but that only seemed to run "Media Service," not "Media." I disabled "Automatically cache" just to be sure. I guess I can re-enable it and monitor now.
I found a couple corrupted video and image files on my SD card. They might have been the cause? I used ES Explorer and noticed some pics and videos didn't have thumbnails generated... that's how I spotted them.
I also deleted a couple of "temp.43223523" files. They were some things I was downloading from the Internet browser, but I must have lost connection or something... and the files were left behind.
I tried renaming some of my pics that had ridiculously long names like "e62352_3423525.23542.jpg" to "pic34.jpg."
I moved all my Titanium backup files (1,300) and ROM backups to my computer and deleted them off my phone.
My Solution?
I placed an empty ".nomedia" file in every folder on my SDcard and ExtSD (and reboot phone). That seemed to actually solve the problem. I've been gradually deleting the .nomedia files with ES File Explorer (and rebooting). You have to enable "Show Hidden Files." Any file starting with a period is hidden.
When you reboot your phone, I think "Media" scans your SD card automatically. So this is how I investigated: 1. Reboot, 2. Charge the phone to 100%, 3. Unplug charger and periodically check my battery status.
Conclusion
The .nomedia solution seems to work when you reboot your phone and maybe clear your "Media Storage 4.1.1..PALJ1 (PLAYLISTS)" with Titanium Backup by hitting "Wipe Data." I enjoy the piece of mind knowing I don't have all these random pics and **** from various apps being scanned continuously at all hours of the day or on each reboot, cluttering up my gallery/playlists. If you're not going to use this solution, I might suggest limiting the number of files on your phone. Making several Titanium Backups resulted in 1,300 files probably being scanned a few times a day. I have 900+ pics and videos I've taken and 10gigs of videos downloaded on my phone and I think I solved my problem. Now my phone is cool to the touch and after 4 hours of use has only dropped 20%.
Create the file with notepad -> save as ".nomedia" or find it somewhere else on your memory card and copy/paste it.

Anything you've read about reboots etc is just false conjecture. History has shown through various outlets like XDA, Google+ etc that the Nexus 4 is rock solid and stable. So much so the Nexus 5, whatever it may be has to be SIGNIFICANTLY better in design and features before I even consider upgrading. Which I doubt I will because the N4 is just perfect for me.

thats normal. considering that its summer there where you are, and the air temperature is warm, thats very normal. the phone temperature while being used will average lower when its cooler there. the phones safety shutdown is at 100C cpu temp, so you are still quite a bit in the safe range.
No problems or over heating after about 10 months of heavy usage!
I can't understand why some people have so many problems with the Nexus 4, mine does no random reboot/lock now (last time I rebooted to install 4.3)...
I had a problem with over-night lockups (i was not the only one), so I disabled a lot of apps/widgets, and got many days without lockups. So I started turning everything back again, one by one. I had a suspect always in my mind: dashclock, I never turned it up again (it has so many plugins, including some made by me with Tasker). I can't tell for sure dashclock was the culprit it's an excellent app, and I ended giving up other apps too (I really didn't used them frequently ).
But I learned that apps can create random reboots... (the system should still handle this, but appears it does not).
So, I don't think anything is wrong with the hardware, since software can take a system down to.
The Nexus 4 is a great phone.
My only dislike is: now on 4.3, I have to use "hangouts" (no status?!) instead of talk (i may root to get talk back).
PS: I've disabled Hangouts, it is of no use to me.

as you said, most of the "issues" are user set up. the heat issue is blown out of proportion by too many, when the issue is a non issue. they "feel" the heat more because of the glass back.
anyways, the great thing about root.. im using talk on 4.3

well flash a custom Kernel which will undervolt the phone and then use an app to underclock the GPU not the CPU. I get 30-35 max, 5-6 hours of battery (4.2.2 ) I tried the 4.3 and did not like how it works.
Loud pops and crackles on the first 4-5 seconds of video taken with the camera.
Poor 3G signal/reception performance from update to update. 4.1 bad, 4.2 good, 4.3 bad again.

Which I doubt I will because the N4 is just perfect for me.

conjecture?
Since the 4.3 upgrade my Nexus 4 is essentially a paper weight. First it just refused to go beyond the X screen. After a downgrade of the radio back to 4.2.2 version, I could start up. After that, the problems weren't over. My N4 locks the SIM at random, shuts down a couple of times every hour and refuses to restart without being plugged in. Even when fully charged.
Worse: reflashing an older factory img (I tried 4.2 and 4.2.2) does not resolve these issues. Nor does flashing AOKP. Which is just bizarre, because my N4 worked perfectly before the upgrade. How can an upgrade lead to hardware problems?
I'm not alone.(but I can't post outside links, apparently.) There's a support thread on the google groups forum 6 pages long.

Are you wiping your partitions in fastboot before flashing the images? Sounds like an error somewhere is causing serious issues for you. It probably stemmed from a bad download and has yet to be corrected. I would wipe EVERYTHING and start with a clean slate. Re-download the images and verify the md5.

How many of you have serious problems with n4? I mean random reboots/shutdowns or freezes etc. I heard about this kind of troubles but I want to know if it occurs to many people or is this single cases.

I've had random re-boots, shut downs and freezes up to and exceeding 10 times a day, during phone calls.... youtube, web browser. you name it. there is no disparity.
it's random. . . it doesn't care when it wants to re-boot. - i've had this problem since the day i received my nexus 4 on January 2nd 2013
It doesn't matter if it's running stock android. rooted or not rooted locked or unlocked.... freshly installed, new rom, different build or new offical stock build.. ~ maybe some builds it has been a little bit more stable.... but there was a short period where i just left the phone as is...
no updates.... no new software.... nothing..... it was working fine for a couple of weeks then the random reboots started all over again.
so i have no idea... honestly.... i've heard every reason imaginable.... it's this software, it's that widget. . . it ain't true.
the problems persist.... on a fresh install....no widgets running... no software downloaded.....
ive tried cyanogen mod for the last few months.... it's been better.
but it's starting the problems all over again... so today i wiped the entire phone.... in a last ditch effort to get it stable....
i'm stuck now without an OS and i can't get fastboot recognized in the command prompt..... i don't know what to do now... ive been reading threads for hours without success.... installing driver, sdk.... you name it....
it ain't bricked..... but i sure can't get android back on there without an OTG cable and that doesn't work on nexus 4. well.... mine anyway.
i just want stock android 4.3 or 4.2 ... "ANYTHING" running... with minimal apps and something stable.... that's all i care about. i can't afford another phone at this time.... so i'm completely stumped.
so . . . there are others like you... that ARE having major hiccups with their NEXUS 4's......
my friends at collage all have the same phone without ANY problems at all..... BUT there are some of us....
who have just had bad luck all the way....
Did you try to RMA?

Casio gshock Bluetooth

I'm not really sure whether these are truly classed as smartwatches, maybe more of a gshock with a few extra features.
I thought I'd take the plunge and buy one of these as the gshock range has always appealed to me, and recently the watch has become compatible with the galaxy s4.
First impressions are very good, a very nice looking, light watch that works as described.
The Bluetooth features work well, although it relies on the gshock+ app, which is a bit limited. At the moment you can receive notifications for SMS, email,Facebook, twitter and incoming calls.
What really appealed to me is the promised 2 year battery life, which sets this apart from all the other 'smartwatches' and is waterproof up to 200m.
Definitely worth considering if you don't need heaps of features.

I have the 6900aa although there's a newer version out now, the 6900b that has some improved features, such as controlling your music from the watch, and setting the timer and alarm from the phone. However, the only way I'd be able to get hold of one, being in the UK, would be to order from Japan.
Feel free to ask if there's anything else you want to know

I'm sure it can in theory because the old version of the app worked with the s4 when that was running 4.2, so 4.3 wasn't a requirement back then.

A Few things I have noticed that I dont like.
The G-Shock App is where all the work is done, so no app no watch, thats fair enough but annoying.
IF I receive and email on my phone via email or gmail I don't get alerted, as the GShock app will go off every 5,10 or 15 minutes and do an imap check on its own, I dont see why it does not use the current notifications. Leading to quite the delay.
I dont get an alert when there are other notifications, I again cant see why it does not do that, it could just beep, or show the subject in the windows like it does email addresses and phone numbers.
Re connection to the phone is troublesome, I dont know if that's because I am using 4.2.2, but it can be a pain in the arse, turning off bluetooth, turning it back on over and over again to get it to connect.
Otherwise I like it
The music control works well and when I do get notifications I know I got them as its hard to miss

Agree with this, I think if Casio spent some time developing the gshock a lot of these issues could be resolved.
Also agree that reconnecting automatically can be a pain and often involve force closing the app doing it manually. I think this is also the case in 4.3.
One thing I did like is setting up the Tasker app so that you dont have to enter a pin code on the phone while the watch is connected.
Sent from my GT-I9505 using Tapatalk
I think its more with the APP rather than the watch too, it seems the watch just shows data fed to it from the app, it really needs some good solid dev time.

So true, so true. If this had a more robust notification app. it would be a lot more functional. Obviously, this is one of the most attractive looking of the smartwatches and certainly the battery endurance is incredible. Only wish it would take a page from the old Sony Liveview and make the app more customizable and allow 3rd party, feature rich notifications.
I am on the verge of giving up, I can even put up with the 5 minute delay on emails, as they are emails.
However the connection problems are doing my head in, I just can get the app to work properly.
On a positive note, since I got the app update yesterday the connection issues are now easier to deal with, I no longer have to restart the phone to connect the watch

40 days in. Starting to freeze daily.

I looked over and saw the screen has been froze for seven minutes. Freezes at least once a day while using navigation and work apps whole driving. That's not good when you just need to select something quick.
What's the best way to figure out issue? Reset?

I'm not far behind... I'm on the 39th day with this phone and I'm happy with it.
Some days, I was doing multitasking (using Google map, listening to music, and checking email and Facebook, etc...at the same time) with this phone while riding with my colleague back and forth to work for over an hour each way without any problems.
The phone got warm a little bit but the screen was still responsive and not frozen!!!
I'm running the final build of Resurrection Remix and it's been as stable as any rom I've ever used. I suggest u try it or Lineage. Stock camera app works since it's updated thru play store.

I think I was able to settle mine down by uninstalling the last few apps (things I didn't use and a couple of games) and then clearing all my chrome tabs, plus I did a reset. Was planning to sideload the oreo beta 2 over the holiday, but never got around to it. Might just wait for the final build if it drops in the next couple of weeks. But yea, I think stock 7.1.1 is just not stable.

Did you ever root or fdr your phone? I've never experienced your kind of problem even before sideloaded my phone from N to Oreo beta 2.
My guess is do the fdr first to see if it fixes the issue. If not, your phone is still flesh started from scratch, nothing to lose.
Make sure you backup your phone first. Good luck!

Oreo beta 2 has been solid for me. I've had the phone since October, and I didn't load Oreo until Christmas and it almost felt like a new phone. I didn't have many problems on nougat that others have had but an occasional freeze once a week or less.
50 days with mine (got it mid November), loaded Beta 1 on it almost the second I got it home, and beta 2 the second it was available to OTA. No issues. Wife's is still running stock 7.1.1 also no issues.
Mine has rebooted itself on its own 1 time in that entire time, and it may have been my fault. But that's still a better track record than my Pixel which probably rebooted on its own 2+ times a month.

Im waiting on my USB cable to come in the mail, so I can't sideload yet. I did to a reset and that helped until I was in the car yesterday and the same thing happened again- gets very sluggish when using using apps like Uber, Maps, Glympse, and Hangouts Dialer for instance. Maybe those are just memory intensive apps, who knows. Not a believer in the "memory boost" or " app killer" apps, I thought the way Android OS was developing those werent necessary- but they do seem to to help - running these two.
Isn't there some way to minimize how apps run or maximize/tweek these things in the OS?
