Luv my note BUT things I hate (compared to iphone) - Galaxy Note GT-N7000 General

Luv the screen pen etc.
But samsung upgrade policy is archaic to say the least. I'm still waiting nearly a month since the german version has been released. At least give us the dates ...and what excuse could there be mines unlocked.and I dont really want to root it and lose the warranty.how come apple can update millions more in a single day ..come on samsung
Kies software is a joke up to five hours to back up and then it doesn't restore ( on the web thousands of people have the same problem.
Why can't I back up my phole phone inc memry card easily and fast.
Still not found a soft app for a keybourd as good as the iphone re spell check etc.
Just my thoughts I would luv another brand with the pen etc.
It seems samsung looks after new customers only.
Just my thoughts
I have no loyaty to samsung

Sounds like you shoulda stuck with the iphone, I don't see what benefits you would have coming over to android if you're not prepared to root and try ROMs, yes samsung is a joke, but I can honestly say I have never regretted leaving iOS for android once.........except when the phone hangs during A PHONE CALL!!!! you know the thing it was actually made for - making and receiving phone calls, Not a regular occurrence I must admit but quite an ironic defect of many new ROMs I've tried in the past, LOL

Plug your phone into a computer like you are used to and get your update.
Apple can update in a day because there are very few models.
Boot into recovery to back up to phone.

You don't need to be rooted to use PC Odin to install the latest official ROM.
There are great keyboards out there...instead of just one on the iPhone. Look at Thumb Keyboard or Swiftkey. There is even an iPhone keyboard...gasp.
And since you don't want to root (you can unroot for warranty purposes and Samsung is none the wiser....) checkout MyBackup Pro in the market.

Samsung - a joke as a company?!?! Do us a favor and never, ever buy a Motorola phone. If you are going ballistic over a Galaxy, you'll kill yourself with a Droid...

you can just copy all the files from your sd to your computer very very very easily using a usb cable, have you never used a computer before? Or alternatively download dropbox and use that to back up your phone. Little bit of research about how android works might actually benefit you. About the updates, if you wanna get all the amazing features of android compared to iphone, you'll have to put up with the update schedules, but updates don't really matter on android you still have more functions that ios.

Wow ... cool it guys. OP is simply used to the apple way of doing things. Give him some time to explore the wonderful world of Android iam sure he'll start to love it.
OP please google a bit or check the play store you will find the solutions for all your complaints.
Edit
I just checked your other posts, almost all of it is about Samsung not updating the note to ics.
Why do you want the stock ics so badly ?
Do you honestly believe that ics will solve all your problems magically?
Believe me stock ics is a can of worms that is better left unopened . (personal opinion pls don't flame me guys )
but If you are so desperate please flash any custom roms which suits your needs, I recommend paranoid

Just to add, since i got my note i have had to firmware updates. One to 2.3.6 and then the 4.0.3 update. This is since April. Now you tell me of any iphone that has had 2 updates in that timeframe. (including major updates like ics )....
And apple can update easier as in total there are only 5 phone's ,of which only a couple of model get the update. Think his many different droids there are!

Please tell me you're having a laugh.... Have you never been on http://www.damnyouautocorrect.com/ ?

i wanted new set of icons....with flashy colours...i just installed a ROM....and my friend has an iphone and he wanted to change the icons too....o]h wait...you can only change WALLPAPERS in that... thats AWESOME

ACTUALLY I have the Note and I have never rooted. I don't find it necessary. I have an application called Folder Sync, and what it does is it backs up my files every night (especially camera files, but you can set it up to your entire SD card) to Dropbox or SugarSync, it has a lot of options for providers. The benefit is that you don't manually need to connect to a computer or anything. You will always have your files synced up. I even have it so when I delete a file off of the server or my computer, it'll be reflected as well on the phone. I hated having to have to connect my phone to my computer every time I wanted to update a folder, sync something, or download something. Every night my phone waits until 4AM, plugged in and has wifi on to sync my 32 gig SD card with its content.
As for the keyboard, it might take you some time to, you know, actually get used to a normal keyboard. Apple had good autocorrect. But I'd rather take the more accurate typing space on the Note over the iPhone's smart predictive text. Apart from that, I have AutoText Replacements which means I can type ty and thank you will come out. I have "putmail" and my mailing address comes out. This is really helpful, and it can't be done on the iPhone, but yes on Android. Try Ultra Keyboard, that's what I use. Tons of themes, settings and it's fairly intuitive.
There are a lot of benefits to Android. If you're just angry about ICS not out yet in your region, I'm sorry, but many times it doesn't only depend on Samsung. It depends also on the carriers, which most bend over backwards for Apple only because they're what's hot and hip right now.
I'd say that if you're easily frustrated, stick to iOS. If you like to tinker a little, stay with Android. The possibilities are endless with apps and configurations.
Once again, I don't root because I think Android is open enough the way it is. You can download an original rom and install it without voiding your warranty, using PC Odin.
Foldersync link
Ultra Keyboard link

This is as close as Im getting to a rotten Apple

This won't give you full peace of mind compare to Rooted.
Agree, If you are noob then should avoid from custom things and playing of different mods.
There is nothing wrong to have rooted Note with rest of completely stock.
Here are some must reason to root (for me)
- Backup you are creating is just additional data, you can get it again once you have application installed on device. And this data is having rare chance to get delete. even you format(hard reset) this data still survives. Only thing which is better to have is backup of Camera (DCMI folder) which you can't get(here folder sync really need). But i do save it on ext memory card, so in case of anything goe wrong still it will escape.
Now if you are rooted, then you can schedule your backup tottaly different way. Like my system stuff backup will start three days of weeks at 4AM, which backup my contacts, SMSs or watever sytem data.
And rest of three days it backup all newer installed application + data (here you will get app + setting, after restoring even you don't need to enter credential, OR won't lose levels you have completed in games)
- What I need is google Maps, In my country still google don't providing me navigation (just direction), but with moded Map I can get it. And yes root is needed for that.
-Remove lots of bloatware from stock system
-Stoping unnecessary auto starting application on boot.
Reagarding warranty, anytime you can just flash stock ROM with PC Odin and your root will erase and you get warranty back

Bye Bye Vibrant =(

So today I returned my Vibrant and removed my Nexus One from Ebay. It's sad that such a beautiful phone had to be returned but I couldn't cope with some major issues:
1) GPS (I dont care if there is a fix, it SHOULD work out of the box)
2) Laggy Market
3) Laggy Homescreen
4) Tethering issues (Using barnacle and IPad)
I will miss the screen... it was amazing... along with some of the features of touchwiz. However, the fact that TMobile confirmed that they will be launching an HSPA+ phone this summer makes me feel that much better about waiting to upgrade.
Let me get out my violin.

Feel better? Goodness it's like at least 5 people have to start this type of thread on every board I visit for any type of device. I can't wait for the usual people to come in and make this a 10 page thread
And when the TMO releases the new HSPA+ phone it will have a plethora of issues on its own, good luck
Just trying to save people the trouble from upgrading from their Nexus if they have one. Thanks for the violin though! ;p
I really don't set the point of these types of posts, so you are unhappy and experience issues that not everyone is. Does that mean I should annoyingly post about how great mine is working? My HD2 gave me problems everyday but I didn't post about it. My slide worked perfectly but I didn't post about it. Again gps is not everyone, I have tried the following apps:
Yelp
Yellow book
Find me
Places directory
Maps
Where
Layers
And google
ALL were able to find my location (locked)
Everything else hasn't happened to my phone yet
So really what is the point in posting that you are returning the phone, because I'm sure you have already posted the problems.

Oh man you should have seen the Evo 4G forums then. This is nothing compared to that.
If i'd've had a N1, I'm pretty sure I wouldn't have a Vibrant now. N1 to Vibrant is probably not that big an improvement, but G1 (even rooted) to Vibrant is HUGE!
Sorry you didn't like your Vibrant!
I personally have had none of those issues, in fact, I have had not one force close or restart, the phone has been on and running without a single hitch since the day it was released and I picked it up at the T-mobile store.
This has been the best out of box experience I have ever had with a phone, especially one that was just released.

I agree on both accounts. When we get 2.2 OTA or mod it will prove to be the best phone available.
Your patience (or lack thereof) got the best of you.phone had only been out a week. Name me one device that was perfect upon release? Take care and cya, I'll enjoy the vibrant for you =)

1. will work after OTA
2. Did you root? Haven't heard of significant issues pre-root
2. thats because it's filled with bulky widgets. Remove a few. I'm running 5 widgets (2 of the samsung ones) and a live wallpaper with no lag (did no lag fixes or anything)
4. Barnacle doesn't work without root. Doesn't work consistently with root because the phone just came out and they haven't added support for it yet. New hardware for a currently unsupported root feature. Hopefully it'll be included in 2.2, but if not, the tether programs should be updated soon.
I think you should have waited before getting the phone in the first place. Nothing come out perfect.
I also purchased the Vibrant to use as a wireless hotspot with my iPad. I am going to give it time. I probably wouldn't have upgraded from an N1 though.
I turned on the phone and I'm not kidding I went straight to ever screen and removed every widget and turned off all but one screen. I mean I really don't need 7 screens when I use the same few apps all the time.
I think the only issue's I've noticed is.
- Camera FC on me once.
- Antenna boucing all over the place signal wise. Full Bars, half bars, no bars. Who knows, but it still works.
I think the only rock solid phone I've ever purchased and it just worked was my old Side Kick. It wasn't fancy or flashy and of course doesn't do half the stuff that these newer phones do.
For me:
Notifications keep phone awake
I get FC when I try to add picture to contact
Slow market (rooted)
Antenna bars jump left and right, but it doesnt seem to effect the signal....
It's a genuine concern. Stop getting so defensive that people are having issues. Not everyone can afford to drop $500+ every two months on the latest and greatest. A new smartphone is an investment, and if it doesn't work as advertised, that's not the fault of the consumer. Also, keep in mind, 14 days is not a lot of time. We don't even know for sure if this is something that Samsung can or will fix.
Some of you are willing to accept that risk, and trust that a fix is coming. That's fine. Some of us are not as bold when it comes to such investments.
So, yes, we may get an announcement, by the 15th day, that everything is going to be fixed and we won't have to worry. But what if that announcement never shows up? What if they just shrug their shoulders and say, "Eh, good enough"?
Well, like I said, $500+ is a lot of money to gamble when it comes to the good faith of a corporation. I'd be lying if I said I wasn't a little bit nervous about them supporting this device properly.
I love my Vibrant, save for these reception issues with the various radios. I live in one of the best coverage spots in my city, and I've been having calls go straight to voicemail all week; my GPS takes 5 minutes to even lock, and when it does, the radius is 2-4 blocks wide; the compass does not work at all, and the phone will assume I'm driving and moving when I'm stationary because of these problems. As of today, it does not appear as if either company is acknowledging the issue. That said, if a statement isn't released soon, I'll be returning it to sit on the sidelines until a fix is announced -- as much as I'd miss the display.

It's just getting started. Not only that, when they return the phone it'll continue to pester on. Oh x -- x and x doesn't work, it's this and that.. no, I haven't exchanged it or I've gotten 5 already and it's not going to be fixed because once I do this, that happens.. and on and on and on and on and on and..

[Q] What is your opinion?

What's going on? To let you know, I am 25 years old and trying to rationalize my decision. Maybe you can help...
Got my Epic 2 days ago. Horrible battery life and ect... tried all the fixins without root due to a 'could be' voided warranty.
I don't want a phone that I have to hack to get it to work 'right'. That isn't the way to do things.
I am to much of an idiot to figure out how to root, delete bloatware, and etc... How am I supposed to figure this stuff out with people telling you that your a 'noob' and 'search' for it...
I might as well return the Epic and get a 'dumb' phone that does the basic phone call and text...
What do you think?
Return it and get a htc phone. I had the epic for 3 days, and really liked some of it, but really hated even more of it. Plus they fight too damn much here in the epic section.

These new smartphones don't get anywhere close to the battery life of old non-smart phones. I could get up to a week on my old feature phone, but a day to maybe two (when we get 2.2) is about what you can expect if you tweak a few things. Get used to plugging in your phone every night, all the power these phones have comes at a price. Plus I'm sure you're playing with your phone a lot right now since you just got it .
If you're getting bad battery life when the screen is off go into Settings>About Phone>Battery Use>Cell Standby and see what the "Time without signal says". If it's 50% or more then you have the bug, it's a common Android bug for phones without Froyo. Just toggle airplane mode on for a few seconds after you reboot your phone and it should go away.
The GPS is kind of fussy at the moment, the Epic has a problem with clearing old data out of the cache and so it has a hard time picking up satellites. There's a few workarounds to this like going into the GPS menu and changing how it starts up (personally it didn't work for me), rebooting the phone always works, but if you use the GPS a lot then it works fine. For me it worked about 70% of the time until I rooted and installed a program to clear the phone's cache every few hours, now it works 100%.
Don't be intimidated by rooting either, it's really easy now with all the good One Click setups. I did it on my Mac and it took no more then 10 minutes, unrooting is just as easy. I honestly wouldn't worry about voiding the warranty, until you get into flashing roms/kernals you won't be messing anything up if you want to root to get rid of bloatware etc.
Sprint's other phones like the Evo are nice too, but the Evo has it's own set of problems. Personally I love my SAMOLED screen and we should be getting Froyo soon.
I've only had mine for about a week or so now and I really like it. I've discovered that particularly hungry apps will kill the battery in a hurry!
other than that, this being my first smartphone I've kinda been under the assumption that if you want to carry around a powerful computer in your pocket, you're going to have to make the trade off that it will burn a lot of battery when you use it. Especially since I'm still in the "open it up every few minutes just to be amazed at the amoled screen" phase where my display is consistently the #1 battery killer by a LONG shot..
so I'd say you should give it a chance but if you don't need or want a smart phone then don't drive yourself crazy with one and get a feature phone that can text and call if that's all you really need.

Thanks for the reply. I wouldn't mind rooting the phone and have seen it done on youtube. That shouldn't be too hard. But how would I go about getting all the extra crap on there off? Does this alone improve battery life? If not, what do I delete?
Is waiting for 2.2 really going to be God sent for our phones? And will 2.2 erase all my hard work rooting it?
Thank You for your time... It means alot.
Try this... go into the "Account & sync" settings by pressing the menu button> settings> account & sync. then uncheck "auto-sync" that should increase battery, if that didn't increase battery enough for you uncheck background data as well. finally if your still not satisfied re-enable "background data" by checking it again and go to the android market and download 'QUICK SETTINGS" by Sergej Shafarenaka open it press the hardware menu button> customize and drag "Mobile data" (not the one that says APN) into "Visible settings" that way whenever you open "quick settings" you can toggle 3g on and off. with 3g off you can still text and receive and make phone calls and your battery will last over 2 days without charging. hope this help I have never rooted my epic btw.
For example this is how I have mines set up.

And only because I don't feel like trying to produce evidence of 2+ days with my phone due to the fact that I actually like using all of the fun battery killing apps that run in the background because I have a spare battery anyway.. the only time I really ever try to maximize my battery life (and no this does NOT mean by not using my phone, because trust me i'm the perfect example of that windows phone ad im always in my phone! and i never let it die without a spare lol) is on the weekends I when I party all day & night, or some sort of rare special occasion where I know I'm not going to see a outlet for a long time.
anyway heres a example of whats possible by doing the last things i suggested (despite the fact whoever screen captured this achieved it a different way) basically disable internet whenever your not using it. just goes to show there are many ways to maximize your battery. this is just one of the ways I do it... and I feel this is highly effective.
These smartphones needs a one click "energy saver mode" that just does all the tweaks for you, basically turning your "smartphone" into a "dumbphone" lol because I honestly have little doubt this phone would last nearly a weak if it did.

Get a dumb phone the battery will last you a week! oh and you can make and receive calls from it. My vote
There are so many threads on here where people tell you exactly how to get amazing battery life out of your phone. It must be a defunct battery because I cannot comprehend how anyone could be having problems with their battery after the number of times its been answered on this forum alone.
Disable DRM
toggle airplane mode
wifi never sleep
juicedefender + ultimate juice
Easily 20-24 hours of battery life for medium use.
If u want batt life get a dumb phone. If u want geautures get a smartphone. I can't live without a smartphone bc I use it like a computer to stay connected all day when I'm away from home. If u feel u don't really need all the feutures get a dumb phone.

Sounds like you're not smartphone friendly. Many people I know are not. But luckily there's a large and varied assortment of devices to choose from. Get a phone that makes phone calls, and maybe messages well, and be happy.
I have had the phone off the charger since yesterday at 11pm and it is now 2 pm eastern time today. Looks great and promising. I will follow up on the research. I also have seen 'how to' root the epic on youtube. Thats easy, just working on how to get the bloatware off and other items to tweak...

I have no idea how people get more than a day out of their phones, no matter the model. Every phone I've ever owned ranging from dumb, quick messeging and smart, I've had to charge every night. Its been like this for 6+ years for me.
Getting more than a day out of a phone is unrealistic to me.
Sent from my bathroom, with toilet paper.
When I first got my phone it took me awhile to learn the basics on how to root and what not, hence the fact it was my first android device (other then the evo, which I didnt root or anything) Root is easy and once you do that you can flash different ROM's/Kernel's to help improve your battery life. I enjoy flashing to new things and once android 2.2 comes out there will be bigger and better things in stored for us.
Now what I didnt realize when I first tried to root my phone was to download SDK manager? It took me the longest time to root, I followed every direction I found which a lot of them never stated to download SDK because they assumed we knew. If you really want to have fun and root your phone then here is what I suggest.
1. Search Google for "SDK Android" click the first link to download it. (may take up to 30+ mins to download everything)
2. Read the Wiki in the Epic Android Development Section. Learn what rooting does to your phone. It also explains how to root your device.

Hey sry... Thanks for the hand up on this situation. Should I wait till 2.2 or maybe try a root now? I might as well do it now and get familiar with it...
Pm me if you like, I will try the root this weekend. Thanks alot!
If you care about battery life and want a smartphone, Blackberries are the way to go. Just don't expect anywhere near the features, customizability, or power of Android. Also, don't expect anywhere nearly as good hardware.
Everything is a compromise. I imagine though that you if hold out on the Epic, the Epic equal of this, an EVO extended battery will come out.
My old flip phone has worse battery life than my Moment

After official update today i don't want OC anymore.

its just my opinion till today, dont know tomorrow maybe again i am on flashing and stuff. But right now tab looks solid. No scrolling lag, typing is normal no lag. I thought i spent more time fixing the unit than using it before today's update. Before any new device shows up i think i need to enjoy and use it. BTW dev's are doing great job by bringing new stuff everyday thats why temptation will always be there to do beyond stock. But guys (btw there was one girl also in samsung store in NYC waiting for her device to get updated) when you receive your original update on this week Friday try to enjoy it because today i have seen this device much improved and no more mod needed for me. But again its just my opinion everyone has their own choice. Samsung you have done a great job with the TW update.

No I didn't buy one I went the other route and got the 7inch tab multimedia dock that has hdmi and the 10.1 multimedia dock that doesn't have hdmi and out them together. The 10.1 part that actually holds the tab just pulls off and clips right onto the inch one.

Install CW recovery and make a backup, post the system.img and boot.img and share the fun
I will make a update zip to restore you kernel to stock and this will remove the CW recovery.

Seems people who have gotten the official update don't seem comfortable with tinkering, which is fine since I can't blame them for not wanting to potentially hurt their devices...but we'll all get our paws on it tomorrow

It's funny that they threaten no more updates unless you accept this one. So... I'd be seeing ICS in 2013? No thanks! I'll stick with the rooted roms and get ICS two weeks before it's released!

Interested in this mod of yours. Are you saying you took the Tab 10.1 multimedia dock and replaced the connector with the 30 pin input of the 7" tab's multimedia dock? Any more/better pictures of this? Awesome idea, I'd love to see a post on how you did this.

I always had this lurking suspicion that Samsung left things like the keyboard lag in there to drive people bonkers and make them upgrade to TW since there was so much bad TW sentiment pre-launch. They made it "optional" but unbearable to not upgrade. Maybe a little paranoid but its not like I claimed they hid a functional SD card port or anything

Keyboard lag is a honeycomb 3.1 thing...i had it on my Acer A500 after updating...
Nice hdmi adapter workaround, at first i tried to do like that but was unable to remove the 7" plastic holder unless i break it otherwise i would have samething like you Task. There is no more typing lag and no more crashing of browser or any app. Also no more auto reboot of the tab which happened with me before the update. One more thing i want to notify that before when i was typing something and if I want to do some correction the cursor to move back on words is now working pretty good. You can move that cursor where ever you want to easily.

It's simpler than what you're thinking.
He just took the plastic holder of the multimedia dock from the 10.1 and inserted it into the 7" tab multimedia dock.
If you don't have both you could just buy the 7" tab multimedia dock and use paper or something else to hold the tab in place.
The good thing about the 7" dock is it has hdmi which Samsung became greedy and removed it from the 10" dock and want people to buy the hdmi adapter.
but does it work? IT actually outputs the HDM signal using the 7"dock?
Update goes public on my birthday, awesome

Yes I can confirm it works, I had the 10.1 charging stand dock and swapped the base from the multi media 7" tab dock with the 10.1 base and works perfectly.

Help me to FINALLY start using my Z3C after 10 weeks of fear!

I bought my Z3C 10 weeks ago and still haven't used it other than turning it on for a few minutes etc. I charged it for the first time yesterday and am now ready to start! I had been waiting in the hope that CM11/12 would come to it, but I think it's time to forget about that happening and just start using it.
I'm pretty ignorant of all tech things so would really appreciate any help in being able to achieve the following with it:
Rooted
Free of bloatware
updateable OTA
simple android launcher
all the while without losing quality of camera etc..
I've been suggested just using google now launcher and disabling apps and I've been suggested XPOSED and I've been suggested AOSP and I'm a little confused as to what to go for. I see FXP just posted this: http://fxpblog.co/releases/aosp-lollipop-release-from-fxp-just-in-time-for-christmas/
But I'm not even too sure if that meets my criteria?
It's a phone used 99% for business and once I set it up once, I want that to be it and don't want to be reinstalling ROMS etc. I'd like whatever I do now, to last me until I get rid of the phone in maybe 2 years time as I can't have any downtime (which is why I've chosen the Christmas holidays to migrate from my current phone to the Z3C too )
If anyone could please please advise I'd really appreciate it and you'd be greatly helping me!
Why root it at all?
There's hardly any bloat, and what there is van be disabled.
Adblock plus works for both 3g and wifi almost as well as a adaway.
Install Nova launcher and you are done.

Its impossible to root without losing camera quality. Why would you even want to? Its a stable clean rom they have on there and the extra's baked in are only useful. Just delete all the crap apps, possible with my T-Mobile version (Netherlands) and just keep some of the sony stuff. The walkman app is my default music player since it supports folder playing.
Seriously just use the phone its a quality product.
Thanks a lot for the replies folks, really appreciate it, especially Christmas morning
The reason I wanted to root, is just to have it open for anything that might need root access in the coming 2 years or so of use. I think there's a few apps I have on my Motorolla RAZR-I XT890 (phone I've been using for the last 1.5/2 years) which need root access:
AdAway (if adblock plus does the same job then that should be fine, but I listen to music a lot on youtube and don't want ads there if possible)
Auto Ring (I THINK this needs root access, it's an app that lets you white list certain numbers/contacts so that if your phone is on silent, it still rings - pretty important for me)
InCall Recorder (again I THINK it needs root, it can record calls internally, not using the microphone like most of these apps do - actually, it's never worked properly on my Razr-I, but I'd like to have it there)
Root Explorer (think it needs root, I use this to disable apps, replace default launcher etc, maybe it's not necessary anymore?)
I'm happy to replace all the above but I also use:
CERBERUS - This needs Root access to be hidden from the app drawer, I'm not sure if it needs it for other functions too, but this is very important.
I've a very specific list of apps I use for my phone, k9 mail, dialer one, jorte calendar and widgetsoid, I'm sure these will all still work fine and if the camera will instantly lose quality and ability on a root, I'd prefer to avoid it if possible?
One important thing to note by the way... Before I've had to hire an android expert to set my phone up for me to root it, install a rom etc. I don't like to mess around with things I'm not familiar with and prefer to pay someone who is guaranteed to do it right, rather than researching for hours how to do it, so I'd be looking for the same this time if I'm going down the root route, but if that's not necessary, that could be even easier!
Cerberus doesn't need root to be hidden!

Oh really? So maybe I'd actually get away without rooting so? What are the main reasons to root so?

Honestly, despite feeling like I needed to root my previous N4, I haven't found the need to root this phone. In terms of what I want, there's really nothing pressing that outweighs the loss of camera functionality, etc. In fact, there were a bunch of things that I expected would need root that actually didn't.
The back button on PieControl works with accessibility and doesn't actually need root any more, which was my major worry. My airplane mode and GPS Power Toggles don't work, but those are easily accessible in the editable Quick Settings dropdown. Cerberus is hidden from the app drawer, though it isn't installed as a system app. My Tasker stuff that deals with music toggle pause/next/back works if I use the shell command to input keyevents (despite all documentation saying that should only work with a rooted phone). The computer app lets you do backups and restores, so you don't need nandroid backups, and Titanium Backup is not as big a deal for me, despite its utility for rolling back app upgrades. There is some stuff Secure Settings can't do, like turn the pattern lock on or off, but that's probably the only one I care about, and once L rolls in a month or so, I think that should be taken care of.
Thanks a lot for the comprehensive reply. If there was one place I thought I'd be getting people telling me I should root and do this and that to the phone, XDA would be it, given the responses so far, I guess I'm better off just leaving well alone then? It's good that cerberus is hidden from the app drawer, but you just reminded me of the more important root required install to system app ability. I guess as long as my phone doesn't fall into the hands of a professional phone thief who can clear cerberus with ease, I might be ok though?
Everything else I'll hopefully get by with too, but I'd really prefer youtube without ads!
So given that I might just leave well alone and start using it... How can I just start fresh now? Maybe a factory reset (even though I haven't used the phone)... but what should be the first things I should install to allow me disable/remove all the bloatware and replace the home launcher etc? If anyone could give even a mini step by step it would be amazing!
There's hardly any bloatware. I suggest you use the phone as it is. Just install all the updates from update center and go on using. I'm sure you'll find the Sony launcher better than most other launchers. It grows on you
Sent from my Compact Beast The Third.
You really don't need to root this phone, the softwares are well written as not buggy, most apps these days world's well without much tweaking.
This is my first phony airport any urges to root.
Thanks again everyone!
I'm not sure I mentioned, or if it emulates from my posts, but I'm quite particular about the way I have it set up hence wanting to remove pretty much any app I don't use, I've been using ZEAM launcher for about 4 years on my current phone and previous. It hasn't been updated in about 2 years now, but as long as I can have the following I'll be ok:

What would be the best way to disable/delete/replace apps I wonder and how do you know what's safe to disable and what's not? Is it just a case of disabling everything or can you delete apps too? Anything else I should be aware of before I start the migrate?

It's meant to be a lot better, I haven't started using it, but size wise it's pretty much the same, you won't notice a difference using it or in your pocket lets say.
My razr has been slow too, but I think I'm just putting it through too much but other than that it's been a great phone.
I need a phone that can handle multi intensive apps running at the same time, maps, phone, music etc. I wouldn't think you'd be disappointed.

I think I have to return my S7 Edge...

I took the jump to Android from Windows Phone and I really liked the S7 Edge form factor and looks however it is just too buggy and has hardware problems so I think I might have to try an iPhone (scary). Here are my list of problems with the S7 Edge:
SD card problems - known issue HW rev problems - nag screen as well as lost apps installed on the SD card
Random reboots - many a day
Thumbprint recognition - seems like it takes me 3-4 thumbprints every time - why?
English Language Pack storage bug - eats all my space - it keeps coming back even if disabled - 2nd time ran out of space on the phone - 16-18GB footprint for this - why? what does this app do?
WIPES MY PHONES - this has happened TWICE - this is the deal breaker - I even turned on 'avoid turning on while in pocket' - doesn't matter when i go for hikes or ski in the cold maybe - it WIPES MY ENTIRE PHONE - not good
bugs with texting and message+ - seem like the phone freezes when texting - can't finish typing - message+ crashes - this is major pain
Lots of apps crashing randomly - not sure why
I really want to make this phone work but the WIPING of the DEVICE twice for me means full day of lost productivity for my traveling job. I can't be rebuilding my phone every few weeks. Is this acceptable for Samsung's flagship phone? I am open and patient to technology and not biased one way or the other (I do miss some features on my Windows Phone).
I think if You are having that many issues with your S7 Edge then you Should return it! Just because this is an Android forum doesn't have to mean going to an iPhone is scary. I live in both the Android and iPhone world and it's a-ok! Now a non-jailbroken iPhone can be much more limiting than a stock Android device but it is still a nice phone and works well out of the box. Maybe you should just return your phone as a defective one or look at the apps your are installing to see if one or two or more are causing the conflicts and issues and reboots. I haven't experienced the problems that you have except reboots after installing the latest version of iHeart Radio (now using an older version and absol6no problems) and the Good Lock app from Samsung was rebooting my phone so I Uninstalled it right away.
My S7 Edge has to be one of the coolest and most beautiful phones I have ever owned. Out of the box it is very, very customizable and even without rooting still offers so many possibilities that I could never do with my iPhone straight out of the box. There are alternatives to try out for the apps that you are currently using and where you might end up liking even more than your current favorites (I suggest trying Yaata text messaging app. Works very well! There's a discussion thread here on XDA-DEVELOPERS too). Good luck with your decision.

This really seems like a bad piece you should replace, and you will be probably fine. I havent encountered any problems aside of one SD card dying unexpectedly (probably faulty SD tho), and the poor palm rejection when typipng with one hand/upside down (this has however been largely fixed by the latest update). Otherwise, no problems at all.

Thanks burrzoo. This is my first Android so maybe I had high expectations or maybe I just got a bad one. I am patient and understand bugs, random oddities since I have only owned Windows Phones up until this point if that tells you about device/HW patience, hacked many ROMs here, etc. so I like the extensibility of the Android platform as a replacement but I guess the Verizon S7 is locked so no custom ROMs? I will say however none of those Windows phones every wiped my phone like the S7 did twice.
As far as installed apps I have really basic apps - Office, Outlook, social apps. Nothing special really. The English Language Pack is an Android installed app that comes with the S7 so there is no way to remove it apparently. I did disable a lot of the default Google, Samsung and Android apps since i don't use them. Maybe i have to leave it more stock to avoid problems? I dunno - if you guys can help me explain the WIPING of my device or HOW to prevent this that would go a long way.

Jomari,
No, I have only owned Windows Phones. I am open to either platform as a replacement. I have never owned an iPhone either but if this is the first class android experience then I would say it hasn't been so great.
I did not experienced all those problems you mentioned, my S7E is buttery smooth.
Strange, I'm having none of these issues. I would suggest you might have a faulty model.
I'd say you have a defective device.
Mine has no issues at all so far.

okay, thanks everyone. Looks like I am past the 14 days return policy and Samsung warranty won't swap hardware. Any thoughts on what I can do to get a new device? Samsung offered for me to send in the device and they can evaluate it and replace faulty HW - should i do that?
I did find two things in my searches for some of my issues:
1) There is an 'Auto-Factory Reset' device option set to ON on the S7 Edge under 'Lock Screen and security' > 'Secure lock settings' > 'Auto-factory reset' on/off toggle. I think this may be the main problem on the device I am trying to solve. On my Verizon device the checkbox is greyed out. Can you guys disable auto-wipe on your devices? The question becomes how is it auto-factory reset in my pocket when i have 'detect device in pocket' and i have locked screen. Is it flipping on somehow with movement? Why would they not have a 'are you sure you want to factory/reset?' if this is accidental?
2) On a fun note - I think I found an Android easter egg or maybe not? on 6.0.1 when I was trying to enable dev unlock (not sure if it is documented) - you can play an Android Flappy bird game:
Go to Settings > About Phone > Android Version 6.0.1 and then click it about 5 times in succession rapidly - it unlocks an Android Flappy Bird mini-game - LOL
I can confirm that on AT&T variant you can toggle the Auto-Factory Reset.

I am open and patient to technology and not biased one way or the other (I do miss some features on my Windows Phone).

just send in for a repair and you will be good to go
i suggest you are trolling
you are talking about S7e right ?!
Sounds like a very defected device.
Your really the first i heard tht has had these problems.
My fingerprint works great.
This is problem the only phone i have had tht doesnt turn on in my pocket.
Also dont know why your phone i wiping itself.
Never had that happen with any phone.
There is an option for wiping the phone if the lock screen password is wrong 5 times in a roll.
I onlynuse the default messging app but never had a problem with slow typing.
16gb for language is very off.
The whole system setup is only around 9gb.
So if you think andriod is crap then move on.
If you wanna try ios then do so.
But i can say that it sounds like your phone is broken

Man, people get so sensitive about their platforms. Yes, I am talking about the new Samsung S7 Edge on Verizon yes. How am I trolling exactly? These are honest problems I am having - is it not possible to have problems with a new device? I guess folks figure if I point out problems than I am trolling. Not sure how I have to prove this are legit.
On a positive note, I think I did find some root causes on my own recently like the 'Auto-factory reset' setting which is why my device is wiping itself however I can't disable it on Verizon for some reason.
Not sure about the other problems - running out of space, etc. so I am welcome to feedback.

the numbers of problems u mentioned never faced alltogether in a single android phone for years.. not to mention the that the S7e is one the greatest phones i ever had except for rebooting which was fixed with software update.
Answers:

I would be tempted to say this is a combination of OS confusion and faulty unit. Some of what you say has been experienced by others in the S7 Edge forums and some of what you said sounds a little like "it didn't do this on my Windows device". I'm not bashing you at all, I'm just saying that it may be something you come to understand with time.
I remember moving from Apple to Android many years back (I moved to the first original Galaxy S device). I felt like I'd made the biggest mistake of my life! I just didn't "get" it. Things that where simple on the iPhone suddenly had 2 or 3 different ways to complete the task on Android.
I would suggest firstly discussing the issues with Samsung or your provider and see if they are actual issues, or user confusion, then once confirmed, I guess you have a decision... stick with it and see how deep the rabbit hole goes, or return the device and decide Android isn't for you.

okay thanks for the fingerprint tips Ashoudy. I think I will send it back to Samsung and hopefully they send me a new device. Don't get me wrong - I really like the S7 and think it is well ahead of iPhone innovation wise. I got it pre-launch so maybe I just got a bad early device.
Some of these problems may not be hw related in my opinion: Factory resets, storage space problem but hopefully a newer device will fix these.
LOL at people in here saying "well mine's working fine", alright, and your point is what exactly?
It's pretty obvious that OP here has a lemon, and it should be returned. This isn't anything new though, and every manufacturer on the planet will have some of these in circulation for the first month or two. That's the price we pay for being early adopters. If you don't want to get a device with any surprises next time, I recommend you to wait for like 3 months before buying a device. Apple also had some issues with the iPhone 6 and 6S, like expected. Same with Sony, LG, HTC and Samsung. It's always a pain in the butt when it happens to you, but it's pretty much a gamble when you get a brand new device this early.
I have personally zero issues with my gold Edge (built on March 15), so this just shows how bad it can get for unlucky people like OP.
