Umm, is it normal for Android OS to be using an insane amount of data? - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S7 Edge Questions & Answer

I was just poking around and noticed this. I have unlimited data so I don't pay so much attention to it.
Nearly 2GB in 12 days. It used 4.19GB in March :| All background data.

Did you use install an update lately? Only thing that I can think of.

Yeah could be the update, I'd turn off all that anonymous reporting of stats as well, but no way does that go into GB territory.

I thought the update was only about 160-something MB? How would that contribute to GIGS of data?
I've noticed, since the update, Android OS is the highest user of battery now. Wonder why

Well I don't mean to blow things out of proportion but... If you're experiencing increased data and battery usage even after the update and while the phone is on standby, if you haven't made any crazy modifications to it since you've gotten it, then chances are your phone is tapped
As far as the steps to untap your phone that's out of my area of expertise. I only believe that may be the culprit because of my years working in cell phone retail. Anytime I experienced a customer with a relatively stock phone experiencing that much usage for little to no use, 8 times out of 10 that persons phone was tapped. We were never really sure who was tapping into their phones we would just assume either crazy exes or spouses since you can easily go to any private investigator and have him tap a phone for you (for a price of course lol)
Best I can recommend is a factory reset followed by immediately encrypting your phone afterwards in case someone is really trying that hard to steal your info

Ummm thats odd! How would someone even tap a cellphone?
Some quick googlefu tells me that this isnt really possible, because the tapping party would need access to my phone and its been fingerprint locked since i unboxed it.

Nah it's not that.
My guess, is it's either Goolgle or T-Mobile pulling our activity from the phone.. even though I have Carrier IQ turned off in settings..

Im sure this has to have a negative battery impact, Android os battery consumption is down after last update but still high. And i dont want anyone pulling any data. :|
Its now pulled 447 MB in 2.5 days.

2.3.5 Kernel BATTERY NOT GOOD

I've installed the 2.3.5 kernel recently because people were saying it was great on the battery but i'm getting pretty tired of this...
Out of nowhere sometimes like this morning i left the phone screen off since 7.00 am full charge and i checked it now at 11.40 and the battery was at 79%... It has been awake the whole morning. I looked at OS monitor and it might be calendar trying to sync all this time without having a 3g connection or wi-fi... why would it keep the phone awake and try so many times to sync if i'm not under 3g coverage?
I used to get 3 days with 2.3.4. I'm going to revert back. Aweful update...
thanks for telling us
I thought it was calendare but apparently it isn't.
Only after clearing RAM has it stopped staying awake even with screen off.
No idea what this is all about.
How do i discover what's keeping my sgs2 awake?
Tell me about it!
I flashed XWKI8 and I have been having all sort of issues with it. My phone was terribly slow and very laggy. It was getting seriously heated up around camera.
And above all, I took it off the charger (100% battery) 7:30 in the morning and now by 3:30 PM I got no juice left in the battery! It just died upon me.
I think I will flash it back to our trusty KF3 update.
Does anyone know if I can just download it from Intratech's thread and update with ODIN, or do I need to get some kinda wipe package from somewhere?
i'm quite positive you just need to reflash the pda in odin
You have no idea what you are talking about. You start that the kernel is not good. Then you blame the calendar for keeping your phone awake. Now tell me how is that related?
You can't say that something is bad based on one experience.
If you read the replies you would've seen that calendar is not the problem...
And before the update the phone was NEVER awake if the screen wasn't on... So YES i think it's a kernel problem
Nonsense !
2.3.5 battery just fine ... better than 2.3.4
Gives me a full day when used intensive (3-4 hours of surf, mail, talk)
Gives me 2 days if used moderately
About ½% per hour standby
The real question now is... how can i see what is keeping my phone awake???

Search for 'Better Battery Stats' in XDA.
Besides, I don't think it's huge improvement in battery life in 2.3.5 than 2.3.3. I am getting almost same battery backup in recent KI3 which I was getting in previous 2.3.3 KF3. There are plenty of ROM's but I doubt there is any difference between then other than they are dedicated for different regions. It's basically a freaking thing to flash new ROM's continuously.
look at this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1290020
and check if it isn't the same thing that's bothering you. when you look at the built in battery stats, do you have a very high usage percentage of "Android OS"?
dude I am usin XXKI8 (2.3.5) with chain-fire root kernel KI8..
I have seen drastic improvement on battery life over KF3.. only 2% overnight drain on standby (with data connection off of course). smoother animations.. near zero lag while locking, unlocking, smoother browser.. the only thing that bothers me is occasional lag while opening gallery.. rest is superb..

I had that also, it's a ***** in Facebook app. You don't need to remove facebook app, just go to facebook chat and log off. I wonder why it's enable by default from facebook if they know this thing is going to drain battery like hell.

How?
Very simple : just delete it.
Your battery will thank you soon, and you will certainly stop pulling your hair out.
Anyway, you always can use mobile FB version which is actually pretty good.
Cheers
No need to delete, just use the app and sign out of chat, poor design on part of facebook, but like many others using android, no investigation, just blame the update or the phone......
nah. i did not know how to see what processes were keeping my phone awake. now that i know i'm a happy new man. And i'd also like to change the title of this thread!

Possibly the worse phone ever

So I got this machine and thought it was the bee's testes, turns out it isnt
I cant rely on it to re-boot without loosing the contents of the internal memory. last night for seemingly no reason it shut it self down and when I discoverd this I re-booted it, and it took and age to restart, then when I checked the internal memory pfffft gone, everything, all gone.
What a crock of cack, this happens every 3rd or 4th time it reboots, looses the entire lot.
Phone is stock, un-rooted, has had a factory reset and reformat of the internal AND external memory.
Frankly this is the last time I buy a Motorola phone, going back to my trusty Hero for the remained of this contract (22 months) that thing has had salt water baths, drops bangs, knocks, rooting and tooting and still wont die, Atrix, cant even take a reboot with out dieing.

Yeah I thought of that, Orange are being difficult though (now why arent I surprised?)
I am wondering if using gingerbreak all those months ago had anything to do with it, but since then I've had the OTA update from orange (the pre-pre update they pushed months ago) that wiped out the root / gingerbreak.
The worse of it is that I never know when it'll happen, seems to be random, not every reboot causes the internal wipe, so damn frustrating, think I may have a look at CM7 as it left Beta last night I wasnt going to hack about with this phone but seems I am being pushed that way
Oh well if anyone has any ideas it'd be appreciated
It's probably just the phone itself. I've never had or heard of any Atrix owner having those problems before. It is technology so there's going to be faulty devices somewhere along the line, unfortunately.
In an unexpected turn of events, a second call to CS Dept, has decided that indeed the phone is Terminally Ill so new HS coming tomorrow, so factory reset tonight to clear everything off
But it is an odd one, random reboots and internal memory wipes...
Ach well

Glad to hear you went the proper route of having it warrantied other than trying to polish a turd. If I run into trouble CS reps I always wait a day and call back. A new person on the other end usually helps the situation a lot.
I had run into a similar issue here at my work with a device. You can troubleshoot it all you want but on mobiles it either works or doesnt.
At the end of the day, save yourself some headache and call it in for RMA.
This happens to me sometimes. Not hardware fault. Motorola can't make a phone.

Battery Life Issue (Is this normal battery life)

I've been noticing my battery has been draining a lot lately, and the majority is going to Android System. I did a search and found another post about this with no answers. I'm not getting much more than 12 hours on a daily basis, and I hardly use my phone. I'm including a screen shot of the battery usage. Is this a normal usage amount? I remember this phone being better on battery than this.
What are you guys getting for typical usage?
Anyone have any suggestions?

as of yesterday, I'm seeing the same problem. Didn't have short battery life before that but several apps updated yesterday morning and now I have something like 50% on Android System and an unusually high "Stay Awake" - we're talking something like 10 hours when I wasn't using the phone for anything in particular - certainly not 10 hours worth!
So, I'm wondering how we tell what is keeping a phone awake?
usually we need more info such as what rom your using and when it started to happen..
second post might be one of the apps thats causing it so id backtrack them n see if u can find the culprit

I had big time battery issues when I was running NI2, and similar to what you were seeing Android System and Kernel, my battery would be nearly drained after about 10 to 12 hours. I rolled back to NE9 and my battery is back to being great I am usually at about 60% after about 10 hours. For what it's worth apps and programs were the same between both builds. Not sure this is much help just figured I'd share my experiences and what worked for me.

This was the solution I feared. I'm having massive battery drain on NI2 as well. Unfortunately, won't we lose "HD Voice" or VOLTE if we roll back to NE9? Not a deal breaker I guess.
It's really too bad Samsung/Verizon broke the phone with an update. This is seemingly pretty common now. Hope another small update gets released soon. I'm on international travel starting Friday and having a phone dead by 3pm doesn't sit very well with me.

Yes, you will lose HD Voice / VOLTE unfortunately. That was a sacrifice I had to take I couldn't deal with my phone being dead by 5:00pm.

I hate that I have to flash my phone back to a prior version because Verizon/Samsung broke it.

My about phone.
so, after posting the second post in this thread I'm happy to post that my battery consumption returned to normal by the next day. I don't know what was going on but I'm still on NI2 and regular battery consumption - what I've been used to seeing on the phone all along.
that said, it's great to know about some of the apps that are available for better tracking/info about wake-locks and battery use.

Serious battery life problem after update yesterday

So guys, I love my S7 edge, as I'm sure a lot of you do, but after the update yesterday my battery life has taken a serious dive in the wrong direction.

Damn if restarting or clearing system cache in recovery mode doesn't work you might need to do a factory restore
I was thinking "Oh great, yet another dude complaining about losing 5 minutes of his 8 hour SOT", but I'll admit this is a weird issue, especially if you haven't enabled or used bluetooth at all. Have you checked with a different logger, like Gsam?

Yeah I'm not the type to moan about poor SOT. The battery life on this phone is among the best. But yesterday was just terrible. Seems today it is doing better. Only time will tell.
I also have battery life issues after the APD1 update. Whereas before the phone had no problem lasting 48 hours, now it struggles to last 36 hours (Exynos here). I hate these stupid updates: notification LED is dimmer under most light conditions, battery life now sucks...thanks, Samsung !

Here's a thought, I also had pretty "bad" battery life after the previous update, and then it got back to normal after I re-enabled the stock Samsung apps that I had previously disabled, so enable them again and let them be for a day or two and see if you notice any changes. This doesn't apply to your bluetooth issue, but I just thought of this now.

Cool. Thanks for the tip. I've experienced exactly the same thing with this update - was getting about 48hrs with just shy of 6 hours screen on time. I have a long weekend coming up, so I'll see how it goes and then restore if I think it needs it.
I typically use Ultra Power Saving Mode overnight. It lost 13% last night in about 9hrs. I would have been disappointed with anything more than about 2%. So hopefully a reset will fix this because I've been loving the battery mode up to this point!!!!

that backs up the apps, but not the "app data" which is a internally saved to the phone itself.
Basically my "Android System" usage went from 2-3% to 17-19% after this update. On the Exynos. So now the Exynos is now as bad as the SD820 at battery life.
I will reset my phone to factory right now, if this does not solve it (and I highly doubt it) then my only option is to flash the old APC8 firmware (it's possible to do it without rooting, right ?)

did the device reboot into a recovery to install the update? curious is someone dropped the ball and left a open bootloader on the released device OR its just the monthly security patch, prob the latter...
further investigations...it did include a new bootloader. i would hold of on installing this if you want root. you never know
Lol yeah not rooting, leaving it alone
I did not install the update. I just love that they say that ATT wants to install an update and give no more information as to what or why. After my upgrade experience I'm not real trusting and was hoping someone could report what it is. Want to compare?
Sadly, it's probably a bunch of good fixes bundled in with some unwanted bloatware and security "enhancements". Lol
BUT... that's just pure conjecture on my part, as I watch the N7 forums and live vicariously through you all. I'm still happy with my rooted Note 3, can't justify the upgrade cost, can't live without my IR blaster, and so will wait.
So, anyone know whats in the update(is it just the Android Aug security update)? Any chance it really would affect root? For me, the only reason to not root is Samsung Pay and since it doesn't support either one of my cards, not worried about that "feature".

It does contain a new Bootloader, and the update was prob forced upon you. Yesterday my device buzzed in my pocket, heard the ATT ding ding dong sound. Pulled my Note out and it was optimizing apps (about 50 of them). Seems they forced the update to my Note, even though I had clicked "install later" many times through-out the day. bastards!
I believe it's just a security update.
I did not get update. Do you have to have a att simcard in phone to see update.

The only way to keep from downloading an update is to have Wi-Fi turned off or disable the update totally with package disabler pro. The phone automatically downloads any update if you are connected to Wi-Fi and will install it even if you hit install later. The phone does the install after the third time you decline it. All of my Samsung phones have done this.

Okay i sh*t you not, I read this on lunch and said in my head there's no way it forced itself, or maybe it's an option to disable under developer settings. Got off lunch and felt my phone vibrate because it was turning back on. Pulled my phone out and saw that it was optimizing apps and I'm like like wtfffffff out really forced itself. I wasnt on Wi-Fi or anything and my phones battery was at like 30% so i honestly couldn't believe it did the update as such a low battery without asking, crazy. ?

The device is brand new. You can expect battery improvements over the next few days, no matter what you do. It takes 3-7 days of charging and use for the battery to reach maximum efficiency.
