Project Ara still going on - Project Ara General

I was able to see the phone in my hand due to a family friend being involved in the project. It is fairly regular size, with all of the modular parts maintained. The whole thing seems to work fine, feels like a normal phone. Only bummer is that it is going to be hell to root, because of all of the different modules. So modular hardware but inflexible software...

What modules were on the device you saw? Could you give us any more details, since you're in the know?

Me too, but now look at it. Interesting modules like CPU, GPU and battery are not replaceable anymore. Do I need a phone which allows you to switch from a black camer module to a pink module ?!!! No !!!

It is a start though. . Im interested in the possibly of the modules having extention wires to mount away from the phone for other projects .. think maybe heads up display on a helmet or something.. Think google glass to see with a night vision module running into glass etc.. Ive got ideas ..lol

Right here: liovinci.com/i/ara it says that you can swap out the main processor or display. Is it still worth waiting for?

Is that even true that you can swap processor. I think Google cancled it.

No, it is now essentially as modular as the g5. Nothing more. It is finished. Not the one I've been excited about, this is some other iteration much further removed from my imagination.

TAT 3D interface working on a desire

Hi Everyone
The Engadget show, demo'd some great UI's from TAT using 3D on a desire!
Take a look:

or direct on youtube:

could be a real possibility! Hope its gets leaked!

The clip from Engadget is much better, the host even jokes about the apk file
OH MY LIFE!
Been waiting on news from TAT for months. Glad to see it working on the Desire. Doubt itll leak though, theyve been testing for a year or so and no one has dropped anything. Dont wven know if any testers had posted anything about it.

The demo showcases what is possible with the desires hardware and possible routes for future smartphone UI's
It can offer us so much more. Just need more devs on board!
Well, if we can generated a lot of interest, we might see some movement from TAT!

Just shows that HTC arent the only ones to make a great overlay system on Android. Theyve taken the benchmark and gone an extra mile with their work.
I absolutely love everything ive seen from TAT, its just visually stunning and looks easy to use. Heard they arent going to release it publically via the market etc, but that was a while ago and its come a long way since then.

thats pretty immense.
not a fan of sense, and android being ugly, this pretty much has me gobsmacked.
would happily kill people to get this.
I'm sure someone would be able to "acquire" this, seeing as the people here have repeatedly performed the impossible, and done nothing short of miracles
I look forward to this, even more than gingerbread or the new sense
only problem now, this will now haunt my dreams till it's on my desire

Over a year of testing on old devices and now up to date ones, not a single apk has been leaked. Theyve done the best job at keeping it hush than any other devs and im impressed by it. Annoyed, but impressed

They have apparently released a few TAT home beta "previews"
"Why wasn't I part of the UX Preview?
We were completely overwhelmed by the number of people who signed up. To keep things under control and take care of feedback in a good way, we could send the preview out to only a few of the 60,000 who offered to participate."
http://tat.se/home/
Surely someone would of leaked it, but heh.
EDIT: It seems like the UI is a "for sale" basis to vendors who want a custom UI. So no marketplace apk, maybe a flashable zip, but chances are, it's going to be like sense. A major annoyance
Found a Fuse concept phone bearing the TAT3D which has been designed by thealloy.com, who, judging by their website, have worked with several large UK companies to bring "interesting" styles to the home...

Whose considering a Synapse Phone

With all N1 alternative threads, I'm surprised I haven't seen the synapse phone mentioned more, so I thought I would start a thread
I am quite heavily considering it. Tho I think I wanna wait for series 2, just to make sure custom rom community is there. Being rooted and unlocked bootloader from factory. But I think I should buy one to ensure there is a series 2
So who else is considering one of these synapse phones? To maybe replace their N1

Man that seems like such a good idea....
The first day someone posted about it on gizmodo or something, I went and looked at the prices. I "built" a phone using all of components that would put it above similar phones spec wise, it was going to cost about $900 USD.
Considering I spent my entire summer savings on my Nexus One ($580 + ~$20 for screen protectors, case, etc = $600) It's not necessarily a good or bad value. If I had that type of expendable income, I would totally go for it!
The concept is cool though - make a phone that caters to your needs. I wish an American company would try this! Maybe Google? "Nexus 2 - Have It YOUR WAY!"

It's an interesting idea - I won't be in the market for a new phone until September 2011 so will keep an eye on them until then. That should be enough time for them to succeed / fail.
I like the idea of a 3 year warranty..
sounds like a good idea, but they are being jackasses, 256mb of ram as the basic mode want more ram? well pay up, which is just plain 2008 or wifi, 3.5mm as options when these are basic necessities for a smartphone.
Seems more like a dream idea than an actual production device

G2 overclock competition

As of late I haven't really heard any more news of significant clock speed gains from other higher end phones such as the Droid X/2 or the SGS phones.
From what ive read the X/2 overclocks were overinflated fibs and the OC method used in the SGS phones overstated their true clock speeds. Anything that I have missed?
I watched a competition like this once...
It was done at a dyno shop amongst members from a Nissan car club.
It was all fun and games until someone exploded their 1000hp Skyline engine.

One would never assume the OP graduated with an associate degree in automotive technology in early 09'. Now that I've stepped out of my realm of expertise into this forum and asked a simple question (at least it's not in the dev forum) I would like some serious input if that's alright. Just proud of my phone that's all.
BTW, the correct terminology is detonated, not exploded and it can be caused by any number of issues...my money is on either a boost spike or lifted head.
Seriously not trying to be an ass here, the g2 has gotten some press over this issue lately and its legit unlike the other phones.

not that i am against overclocking(this is the first phone i overclocked and i set it to 1 gig) but other than "because i can" why do we need it faster than 1.9? sometimes i like to put my phone to my face to talk on it and i would like to keep from needing skin grafts. do any of our apps really NEED anything more than maybe 1.2?
psx4droid runs great at the higher speeds as long as you keep an eye on the cpu and battery temps. I have the 1800mhz Zimage on my phone right now but I keep it restricted to 1000mhz via setcpu.
Really I see it as about pushing the boundaries for the sake of knowledge, if I could compile my own personal kernel I would but being on the verge of going to pharmacy school and work both keep me too busy to learn how.
This thread isn't really about why one would do it, it was just simply asking how the g2 is fairing against other higher end phones.
I'd love to see something like this as well. Sooner or later, we're going have to start installing heatsinks on to our phones.

man, i like your style!
this is a great idea.. but: plates must be very close to eachother, and it's unuseful if the plates are close to other parts themeselves; don't exceed with the paste: it must be a small quantity that, pressed, it expands itself close the the edges of the component
if it doesn't work, you can clean the paste with some alcool, using a cotton-fioc ( you know, these little cotton-sticks you can use to clean your ears )

We have had alot of different mobile OS announced/released in the last few years(tizen, firefox, sailboat, fedora, even webOS) and all of them have still yet to make any type of splash. Windows has partners and phones on the market yet still struggles to make a large impact. It's going to be insanely hard for Ubuntu to do anything note worthy at this point.
Can't wait to fork it.
I'd really like to give it a go!

I see this actually getting popular, and let me tell you why. Assuming I haven't misunderstood anything, they are also releasing Ubuntu for Android as well. Now Google will likely update Android to match Ubuntu's features (which is essentially much better multi-tasking), this is a given. However, there are so many phones that are stuck on outdated versions of Android (or install not always stable/complete custom roms). As long as your phone (or tablet) is a dual core, you'll be able to install Ubuntu for Android and voila, you now have a proper multi-tasking OS.
That's all you'll need, you'll become accustom to Ubuntu on your phone and you will consider an Ubuntu phone as your next purchase. I am excited to see how this unfolds and I am very anxious to install Ubuntu for Android on my Android phone and tablet.
I'm actually excited for this. The OS itself looks nice, and not like any other thus far. I honestly think this will be a contender in the smartphone world. How many of us use ubuntu for developing? And anyone into custom android stuff would probably be excited to try it since it is new and different. I feel like even if it isnt going to be the next big thing, dev's and people that like simplicity are going to love this.
ubuntu?
yes! very excited, it will be awesome to see how it all plays out after it is out there!
I can't see Ubuntu phones taking a noticeable share of the market. Even I, a Ubuntu fan and early adopter, am not so keen to abandon Android to use a Ubuntu phone. However, it would be cool to try something new.

I just don't like the white. I hope substratum team can work there magic. I'm sure they will. As long as I can make it dark I can be happy.
Just for laughs... let's say this actually is the final design and look. It still goes right along with the rounded, colorful, flat, and simple Material Design that Google had implemented way back in 2014 for 5.0 Lollipop. So this argument of "copy" is invalid.
Also: Without Google there is no Android, and without Android there is no Substratum. Know your roots!

The amount of free advertising this theme is getting is absurd. 4 days of non stop threads and posts about it.

You do realize that a good portion or some of the elements are most likely placeholder elements, right? With a really early preview there are always going to be missing features, themes, etc. This is essentially an Alpha release, which means maybe 0.01 percent of users will ever see this version in person.
An example of a placeholder would be how Amazon deals with video game release dates for games that have no official release window at the time. They like to use the "December 31" with 20XX year as a placeholder until the game has an official release date. Does that mean every game comes out on December 31st of every year? No. Many companies use placeholder text, images, and even themes until the final version/product is ready. The final product may look similar to early builds, but there is a lot of time between early stages and consumer release. Expect some changes, tweaks, and other visual elements in later versions at the very least.

I realize it's the first. I didn't like O either. Thought Nougat was better. People just can't not like something. If the end product is anything close to this, it sucks in my opinion. And that's all it is my opinion. What I don't like you might love. And I remember the first preview of O. It didn't change much. Actually the preview was better. had more options.

I wish more people would think like you! Trying to make one centralized theme that fits everyone is not going to happen. Some like colorful, some like dark, some like rounded, some like squared. Everything is all about choice, personal preference, and opinion. Same goes for smartphones... trying to make a device that has the look, feel, and features that will appeal to everyone is next to impossible. There will always be someone who disagrees, doesn't like, or prefers something else. It's human nature, and part of what makes us an individual. :good:

You're absolutely right and it seems Google's trying to take that away from us little by little going the iPhone route. I hope not
