So I've got the Google USB-C OTG cable to go with my Nexus 6 and have connected a 32GB USB Flash Drive. It gets recognised by my phone and I can read all of the contents that I put on there using my PC, however if I attempt to write to the USB at all from my phone, either by creating a folder or copying files/folders onto it, using ES File Explorer, I just get an error, "The operation is not supported".
I also get the same error on my Pixel C.
Is this an issue with ES File Explorer? Or do I have to root my devices to write to external USB storage? (Both are currently un-rooted and I don't wish to root them)
You can try Nexus Media Importer. It works with my 6P. If it doesn't work for you, you can get the refund.
Looks like ES File Explorer was the problem. I tried USB OTG File Manager for Nexus and that worked.
I suppose ES needs a few updates for proper OTG Support

Using my OTG cable, along with StickMount, I've been able to view files on my USB stick. However, after formatting (exFAT) my USB device, and trying to view files off it once again (using ES file explorer), the folder for the USB Storage now shows up empty. Even when files are present on the USB stick.
I have tried different files on the device, to see if my Nexus 7 will read, but to no avail, it just shows an empty folder.
Anyone got any ideas?

so I probably won't be able to help, but just out of curiosity, does StickMount launch when you plug in your usb stick?

Got it fixed!
When formatting my USB drive through windows I only had exFAT & NTFS file system options. What I did was download "HP USB Disk Storage Format Tool - v2.1.8" - and it gave me the option to use FAT32.
Problem solved, USB device seems to be working now.
Thoughts on whether or not it'll happen? Although given the Nexus 6P will probably have the USB type-C port, we'd need all-new OTG cables to even take advantage of it...
Nexus 5 with the latest Marshmallow preview can do it, plug in the flash drive and a notification pops up "Kingston USB drive|For transferring photos and media" click it and it brings up the file explorer and can access and copy things to internal storage.
I'd say its a safe bet that any newer phone will be able to do it
"Native" as in it shows up under storage in Settings and actually mounts to /storage/usbstorage. I have to use ES File Explorer on my Nexus 9, but I had the thought that with Marshmallow's new storage handling something might be different on the new Nexii.
edit: Also so other apps with the WRITE_EXTERNAL_STORAGE permission can access the data on it.

But not every app can access it, it's google's design
I bought this Kingston DataTraveler 64 GB Micro Duo Type C USB 3.1 Gen 1/USB 3.0 Flash Drive, Just plugs right into the jack of the 6p. You can view files on it with Googles file browser, but cant mount it so other apps can see it. I cant figure out how to view the usb drive through esfile explorer, root explorer. Also just rooted to see if that would work, but no go, only googles file browser.
Any Ideas?

I use the (root) app stickmount. You might also want to try ES file explorer (yes, I know that the new version have many unpleasant features...).
So i have a Nexus Player with Marshmallow 6.0 intalled (rooted). I have 2 usb sticks (16Gb & 32Gb) both are SanDisk USB 3.0 Sticks. Both are formatted using the Nexus Player "Storage & Reset" option.
With the latest ES File Manager and SuperSU i try to create certain folder within the USB sticks, but every time it says: "Please choose the root directory XXXXXX of ext-SDCard to grant ES permission to operate". I have StickMount installed and gave it grant permissions with SuperSU. Did not do any good..
From research on the internet i understand that marshmallow no longer allows external sd card nor USB sticks as external storage?
Is there a way to fix (bypass) this?

Both USB's are recognized when i start up ES File Manager, but as soon I want to create/copy a folder to one of the USB stick, is says sorry action failed.
ALso tried to start Root explorer from within ES File Manager but again it says: "Sorry, test failed. This feature cannot run on your device".

I would like to know this as well. I currently use two 1TB hard drives on my NP on 5.1.1. It would be really nice to be able to update to 6.0, but the last time I tried that I could not get my drives to work.
Not sure if this is a solution you are looking for, but I am my Nexus Player on Marshmallow 6.0. I have a 5 TB usb drive attached to my Netgear R7000 router. I have successfully network mounted (over wifi) my drive and all apps see it natively. No need to use the Nexus Player USB port. I wrote these instructions a little over a year ago and they still work for Android 6.0
I run nougat(nrd90m stock+ by tupac4u), I tried to transfer files from my phone to pendrive using otg it works but when I try to transfer files from my phone to the pendrive I get a message in es file explorer saying operation not supported but I can transfer some image or video files! I face same problem with computers running windows too where my devices doesn't show up as a storage device, it only connects with ADB interface!

I bought USB OTG yesterday to access my usb via phone, and all of my file explorer cannot open it. ES file explorer says the format is unsupported, Xiaomi file explorer only says "wait a sec" while I wait forever. EX File explorer also cannot open the storage. My USB is TeamGroup 64 GB 3.0 and the format is ExFAT if Im not mistaken. It works perfectly on my Laptop, I tested it. Any help would be appreciated, thanks.
