[TUT] Bring back boot sound on Samsung Marshmallow - Galaxy S6 Edge General

It seems Samsung in it's infinite wisdom decided it will make the boot sound on Marshmallow silent.
I've seen this on Note 5, S6, S6 Edge, S6 Edge+, S7 and S7 Edge Marshmallow stock roms
When you extract the system.tar from these Marshmellow roms the audio file for PowerOn.ogg is silent.
So, if you want a boot sound you need
1. Root and / or custom recovery - like TWRP
2. a new PowerOn.ogg (or an old one from a previous rom if that is what you like)
3. a root file manager / browser app (I use root explorer v3.3.7 as v4 seems to have bugs?!?)
Q: Where is the boot sound located?
A: root/system/media/audio/ui -> PowerOn.ogg
In this screenshot you can see I have already replaced PowerOn.ogg due to the larger file size and date

I am using the PowerOn.ogg from my Note 4 running android 5.1.1
You can download it from my google drive here -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxOh5UkYXJw0NzZKSG9FU0NNTVU/view
(click the downward pointing arrow up the top to download the file when you are on the page)
best to use your phone to download this for this tutorial as I will reference the place it is download to (by default) or you can manually put it here from your PC
The location the file saves to is sdcard/Download -> PowerOn.ogg
Q: How do I change this manually on my phone
Well, you need root (to access and re-write system files) and a root browser app (there are free ones I believe on google play but I use "root explorer" as outlined above as this was a free paid app from amazon a while ago!)
So this is my guide (with pictures) using root explorer but the same applies with any root browser app
1. Install "root explorer" from Google Play (or any free alternative) - https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.speedsoftware.rootexplorer&hl=en
2. Open "root explorer" from your app drawer or from the google play app (if you just downloaded it)
3. Once in root explorer navigate to where you saved the downloaded PowerOn.ogg on your phone (sdcard/Download)
4. Long press on the file PowerOn.ogg and an options menu will pop up, then select "Copy"
5. You will now see down the bottom of the app an option for COPY HERE
6. Scroll up on the root explorer listing and press ".. " (parent folder) until the folder is back to "ROOT"
7. Then navigate to system/media/audio/ui
8. Press COPY HERE which is located on the bottom left
9. You will get a warning that the folder is read only - press Yes
10 You will get a warning that PowerOn.ogg already exists and do you want to over write it - press Yes
The new PowerOn.ogg is now written to your system
11. We now have to change permissions of the file to match those in the folder (currently the file is rw-rw-rw and we want it rw-r--r--
12. Long press on the file PowerOn.ogg and an options menu will pop up - Select Properties
13. Change the properties to Owner - Read and Write, Group - read, Others - read by un-ticking the boxes in the write column on the rows of Group and Others and then select OK
14. Check the read write properties is the same as the other files
15. Exit out of the app (press home button) then turn up your system volume!
... and reboot and enjoy!!!

CWM / TWRP Flashable zip
For those using custom recovery
Flashable zip here -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxOh5UkYXJw0cmlnWE9uUVNjblU/view?usp=sharing
download on to your phone and install via TWRP / CWM
Template to insert your own custom PowerOn.ogg into your system
Flashable zip here -> https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BxOh5UkYXJw0UlQxc3NmYzl1b1U/view?usp=sharing
1. download to your PC
2. extract zip
3. navigate to system/media/audio/ui
4. place your own PowerOn.ogg in the folder
5. go back to the root folder (PowerOn_inserter_template) where you see the 2 folders "META-INF" and "system"
6. highlight both folders and zip .. call it whatever you like
7. transfer to you phone
8. reboot into your custom recovery and install

volume is determined on what your ringtone volume is before you restart or shutdown.
I.e. if your phone is on silent when you reboot your boot sound will be silent ..etc etc

It's a more clear & consolidated guide as chatbox pointed out
I've tidied it up to make it easier to read.
I'm sure now you'll see it's more useful / easy to follow than all the other guides out there
you do not need to root the phone before hand as darkys is pre routed for you once you have flashed it with the rom
how about adding instructions for us that need to use a different modem? (i8000m)

I figured I'd toss this out there as a way for us to pull together (hopefully) as a community.
Since ParanoidAndroid is based off of CM10, should the settings in apns-conf.xml (which I extracted and attached - just remove the ".zip" at the end of the file name) be the same on CM10?
I had applied the APN tweaks to CM10 (proxy/port settings) previously, and with this post had compared the info - and it's different. Just wondering if all these changes should be made to the APN settings.
I would imagine that all Sprint devices should have the exact same APN settings, but I could be wrong.

At first that's what I thought but after trying and trying I came to the conclusion that it wasn't going to work so thats why the differences on my xml from the default sprint settings, im not certain if this settings will work for any other ROMs but it works great on the 4.1.1 Paranoid.
Follow the steps carefully and give it another try

I didn't use this (the OP's) tweak because I'm on CM10, not ParanoidAndroid.
All I was asking, is this tweak applicable (settings-wise) to CM10? The tweak for CM9/10 for APN's is not as involved as this; this fix changes a lot more of the settings on the APN page.

Where are the ring tones?

I got my S8+ today and set up has been a breeze. However, I want to set up some ring tones but can't find them! The Settings Sounds option just takes me to a directory listing and the Ringtones directory has just one file. Am I missing something? Where's the usual list of tones?
Thanks

Just found a zip file with the ring and notification tones and have loaded them. However, the zip file also contained a directory called "UI" with a load of sound files but there is no such directory on the phone. Any ideas where these files should go?
OP probably run into same stupid problem as I did: first time I changed ring tone, it gave me option to pick file manager, I picked wrong one, which didn't have access to system files and was set as default. From now on everytime I want to change ringtone, I get root directory with empty ringtone folder. Going to default to reset it didn't help, that particular default was not listed in there. I had to uninstall the es file manager to get the option to choose default apps again and the one with Android icon is the right one with proper access. Once you do that it will work. I absolutely hate Android access folder restrictions, can't wait to root this stupid phone so it works the way it should. I also changed settings for default apps: most default apps don't show up in default apps menu, how am I supposed to change them? Now I have option to run it once, test it and then later set as default, if I want to. And why ringtone folder has restricted access is totally beyond me.
Thank you pete4k. I had the same problem and you pointed me to the solution. I didn't have to uninstall ES file manager, though. I just went to Settings/Apps/ES File Manager Pro/Set as Default and pressed the "Clear Defaults" button.

I'm glad my post pointed you in the right direction and yes, that should work too.
Ringtone folder was empty
Tried looking everywhere file explorer, where did the built in folder of ringtone just shown empty. Beyond my understandment.
All i did was set a new ringtone from my selected music, & all built in ringtone in samsung disappeared.
Thanks to pete solution worked. Im trying to click thanks but its greyed out. So i register & logged in especially to do that.
Solution as described go to settings app es explorer clear defaults.
Then went back to settings selected ring tone it asked me choose es explorer or green android bar ( original android ) selected original android. Simply got all builtin ringtones back, as well as my mp3 ringtone was automatically added to built in list.
Much thanks couldnt do it without this help.
Some problems are beyond underst.
Very quick solution. But took time to get here.
Thanks to google, this forum & mr pete once again
On my Galaxy S8, I was using Total Commander instead of ES File Explorer, so I ended up finding the actual directory: /system/media/audio/ringtones and /system/media/audio/notifications.

[GUIDE] Recover the lost downloaded themes after factory reset or deleted data

My idea is based on this thread: https://www.asus.com/zentalk/in/thread-88789-1-1.html
I recovered the lost downloaded themes but previous backup of the *.zip themes files is required (fortunately I had a backup of the themes on my pc.)
Requirements:
1. Backup of the "*.zip themes files "
Example:
com.asus.themes.th12121212121.zip
com.asus.themes.th10101010101.zip
…etc
(the downloaded “*.zip themes files” are located in: /storage/emulated/0/.AsusTheme/themes)
2. Rooted device
3. BusyBox installed
4. Root explorer installed
5. GScript installed: https://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=486486
6. SQLite Studio 2 for windows: https://www.softpedia.com/get/Internet/Servers/Database-Utils/SQLite-Studio.shtml
Step by step:
1. Install BusyBox, Root explorer and Gscript.
2. Open Root explorer, go to /data/data and create backup of the folder called “com.asus.themeapp” (simply copy entire folder to SD Card or Internal Memory and close Root explorer)
3. Go to Settings >Apps >"All" tab >Themes and clear the cache and data.
4. Go to main screen and simply open and close the Theme app. Press “recent screens” button and close all recent screens.
5. Open Root explorer, go to /data/data/com.asus.themeapp/databases and copy file “ThemeDatabase.db” to SDCard or InternalMemory.
6. Open Root explorer, go to /storage/emulated/0/.AsusTheme/theme and check if the *.zip themes files exist.
(If files exist go to step 7, If files not exist go to step 6A)
6A. If the folders called “.AsusTheme” and “themes” not exist, create it and go to step 6B.
6B. Copy all the *.zip themes files from your PC to /storage/emulated/0/.AsusTheme/theme
7. Download THIS ARCHIVE, uncompress and save the “theme.sh” file on your device.
8. Open Gscript, go to settings and configure the script patch folder(Library) and set the default profile to “SU”.
9. On Gscript search and run the script “themes.sh”
10. After script is finished connect your device to PC.
11. Go to \Internal storage\.AsusTheme\themes
12. Copy to PC the file called “themes.list.log”
13. Go to \InternalStorage\ or \SD Card\ and copy to PC the file called “ThemeDatabase.db”(is the copied file on the step 5)
14. Install and run SQLite Studio 2 for windows.
12. Go to File/Open Database and open the file “ThemeDatabase.db”
