Unable to create backup folder from TWRP, can't take OTA, or anything - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've been struggling with my phone from day 1- hopefully someone here has experienced and solved some of what I've been facing.
First some info:
I have a non-rooted XPE 1575 with an unlocked bootloader. I have never been able to receive an OTA update and needed to install 6.0 using a clean install of a stock ROM. I now can not successfully install the security OTA update (i get a dead Andy 'Error'). I have flashed stock recovery, boot image, and system chunks. No luck.
More alarming to me (and possibly a hint at what is going on) is that i can not even back up my phone using TWRP (v2.8.7.0). My internal memory is too small for this, so when i try backing up to my 128 GB sdcard (formatted to be adaptable), i get the following error E: Unable to create folder: /external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS (errorno=5) E: Failed to make backup folder.
So, i can't stay 'stock-like' and just use OTA updates, and i can't backup my phone and then try to install a clean updated ROM.
Any ideas from anyone?

Try using the latest twrp.

Wow- I thought I was on the latest. I actually had it downloaded, but for some reason flashed the older one. The new version resolved this issue and I now have a backup, so I'm in good shape. Thanks so much!

TWRP Backup Lollipop [22.39-5 OTA] EDIT 11/27/2014 latest [22.39-6 OTA]

I was able to create a TWRP backup of the ota after I installed it on my Moto X XT1095. I was able to flash this using TWRP from kitkat.
After flashing this, you will have the new ota, however it will not have the new baseband (you will retain the original baseband from your previous installation, in other words this does not include the modem). I believe that you should be able to flash this to any one of the XT variants as long as you are able to flash a custom recovery (in this case TWRP, I used 2.8.1.0 if that matters)
I had to create new folders on the internal storage due to the fact that I was unable to create a backup of kitkat. All I did was create a new folder on the internal storage called TWRP, inside that folder I created a folder called BACKUPS within that folder I created a folder that has the unique alpha-numeric name to each device, and finally in that folder I placed this backup file. TWRP/BACKUPS/unique alpha-numeric name/2014-11-09--11-34-04 LXE22.39-5. Then I booted to my TWRP recovery performed a factory data reset along with wiping cache and dalvik, then performed the restore.
If you don't know what your unique alpha-numeric folder name is, you can find this by booting to twrp and try to perform a backup (this is how I found out what my folders name was). I got an error, within that error was the path (it is verbatim and case sensitive).
If anyone wants to try this, here is the link.
Unzip and place in the folder I described.

i appreciate you sharing this... question for u (or to make sure i understand how you tested the 5.0 Nandroid): after flashing the OTA, did you restore your 4.4.4 Nandroid (confirm it works: calls, data, etc.), factory reset and wipe and then restore your Lollipop 5.0 Nandroid (boot and confirm it works: calls, data, etc.)? thanks in advance for your reply.

After the inital OTA, I wanted to see if I could get back to 4.4.4 stock unrooted. I accomplished this by running the tool created by bhp090808. After that, I unrooted through supersu, I flashed the att modem found on graffixnyc site. I then flashed "MotoX(2014)_stock_install-recovery_sh" (with twrp) that 0.0 provided in post number 124 from the "[OTA ZIP] Pure Edition Lollipop 5.0" thread. Finally I flashed stock recovery to achieve a stock 4.4.4 system. Everything worked. After I confirmed that everything worked I did the ota again just to see if it would flash. It did, from there I was able to flash twrp, but after you reboot from twrp on the new ota you lose the twrp recovery....there is a new feature in the latest twrp recovery that allows you to move a file from pc to phone internal storage, that is how I was able to create the nand.
Funny thing is, you cannot create a backup from twrp with 4.4.4 but you can from the new 5.0 ota.
Hope this answered your question.
BTW, this nand is of the 5.0 just to clarify, like I said I was unable to make a nand of the 4.4.4
That's funny. I can do a TWRP backup just fine in 4.4.4.
Did you advanced->fix pemissions in TWRP?
not working

I am having some issues with my phone so I tried to flash this.
When I attempt to copy this over MTP it tells me one of the files is too large for the system

No, i did not. I will try that next time i downgrade. That would make things a lot easier for a person to put this in their backups.
Were you able to make a backup of your stock unrooted 4.4.4?

follow along with the way i accomplished unrooting. i can confirm this works, I have done it several times now with consistent success.
BTW, this is not to be flashed, rather done through the "restore" feature of the twrp recovery. By placing this folder in the backups you will be able to access it through restore.

You will be able to take the ota, modem and all. I'm just guessing you have the XT1095.

LOL. This message brought a smile on my Monday morning face.
I can't copy the folder to my phone. It says it's too large. How can I do it?
Make room by deleting stuff? If that's not the problem then I don't know.
Maybe try pushing the folder with adb.
Did anyone try this on the XT1092?
Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, I keep getting "invalid crc file for system.ext4.win000" when trying to copy the backup to the final destination folder. Been using Solid Explorer. I'll try another just in case.
Edit: ES File Manager worked. Also, for me, TWRP 2.8.1.0 will not backup, but 2.8.0.1 will. For what's it's worth.

XT1097, but it doesn't really matter for the problem I'm having.

[Solved] OTA update fails on Yoga Tab 2 1050F

Hi,
i have the Yoga Tab2 1050F. The last OTA update fails to install.
I am currently on S100067_1507101258 and the update is for S100196_1511230539.
All earlier OTA's installed fine. I had my Tab rooted, but i unrooted it before installing the OTA update.
I also did a factory reset, the update still fails.
I only get an "Error" on the display with the tilted android avatar.
I saved the last OTA file, which is around 50MB large.
I also tried an update via the internal sd and the external sd card. None of these helped.
Can anyone help find the cause and help me install the latest update?
Regards
Jay

the thing is that not always the 'unroot' works for doing a system update, the unroot (have you performed the full one?) could leave behind modified binaries or maybe apps you installed have did that (for eg if you installed busybox it will leave the new binary) and the first step of the OTA update is to do a check of all the files that are going to be updated (patched) and if one of them doesn't match the sha1 checksum the update will abort (will not change anything on your tab when aborting). you can fix it by:
1. (complicated) restore the orginal files (you can check the recovery log on your cache partition to see where it failed)
2. (recommended) flash a stock rom matching your existing Android (you are on lollipop so you can use this for a stock lollipop install)
ps. factory reset doesn't save, that one just erases 'data' partition, has nothing to do with the ota (that usually updates files on the 'system' one or the 'boot/recovery/fastboot' partitions)
Thanks ionioni for your answer.
I don't want to flash a stock rom, that is not OTA. Just for security reasons. This would be my last resort.
I prefer to "repair" it. I am familiar with your tmp-root tool.
Do i have to mount something when i am in tmp-root, to search the su root files?
I think they reside in /system/lib and /system/bin.

if you start with tmp_root it will open an early adb shell as root (regardless of whether your tab was or not rooted)
check after you shell in to see if the /cache is mounted (input a simple mount) and if it is not you need to mount it
afterwards you will need to go and do an adb pull on your recovery log (if i recall is on /cach/recovery ) and check inside to find on what did the ota failed
however this is cumbersome and even if you find on what it fails you still will have to find the original files (and after you try to OTA again it can fail many more times on other files as the OTA is aborted on the first non matching file and if there are many you will need to repeat these steps over again). i never did this, i am just saying that it could be done, but why would one waset maybe hours just so he can bring his system back to the same state it could bring in 3 minutes by flashing a stock rom? but if you want the complicated way feel free
if i were you i would just flash the stock rom in 3 minutes (that is how long it takes) and move along
what security reasons you are talking about?
I am just carefull. The images might be tampered.
But i get your point. It might get cumbersome to fix each file.
I'll try your method and flash the lollipop image.

oh, i see... i doubt they are tampered by anyone (except Lenovo of course ) the files i provide have already been used by others (and if they were to be tampered they would have failed future OTA's, the boot image is checked and it won't load if modified etc)
as a personal thought, to tamper a stock rom (to whatever purpose one would want) so that they cannot be detected by a future ota requires a level of knowledge that i think keeps us safe (i think one who is able to do such a thing would not 'waste' his time and resources on doing it to a normal/casual user like we are), so if you are able to take ota's you can safely assume that the files are the ones Lenovo put in there (not to say that Lenovo could not do funny things tho)
i wish you to become so important that one day this could be a real concern
yeah you are right.
thanks for your support. i managed to update my tablet.

How do I update to Android 7.0 on the Axon 7 (USA Model) with TWRP Recovery installed

I'm unable to unpate as of right now because I have TWRP recovery installed.
When I try to, it tells me " Package expects fingerprint of *original device fingerprint* this device has TWRP\Team_Win_Recovery_Proejct/ailsa_ii

I tried removing the part of the script that checks this, but then I got a different error (I don't remember what it was, it said something about "Boot:1826459185:1U57126581(Random numbers not the actual ones) contains unexpected content" or something like that
So I was wondering, how would I go and update to the new Android 7.0 update? (I also have the zip file of the update locally)
I would assume that I could flash stock recovery but a. I don't have the stock recovery.img, and b. I was reading around and someone mentioned that if I flashed stock recovery it'd delete all my data.
I'd be highly disappointed if the only way I could update to the 7.0 update is by deleting all my data. I'm sure there must be some way around it.
Can anyone help me out? I'm sure I'm not the only one that'll have this issue

Flashing stock recovery will not delete your data. Find your stock firmware download on the forum or zte, pull recovery.img from it and flash in twrp.
Of course those who whine about wiping data usually are the ones who need to do it most.
FYI I updated, flashed twrp and then restored data from my b29 backup without issue. At least this way you can make a new backup before attempting.
You can also wait for the flashable .zips to show up and avoid all the hassle.

Read my updated comment; Sorry that I didn't just edit the thread. And that makes sense. I think it would be wise for me to just wait.
First of all, flash rollback zip from DrakenFX.
Then update via OTA. That's all. I've done these steps yesterday and I'm using Nougat now.

4.5.1 Update with Root and Recovery

Trying to update the 4.5.1 and it seemed to have gone fine until it automatically reboots into TWRP recovery. Upon rebooting into system, it states the update failed. With TWRP having all those jumbled folder names right now (has this been fixed yet?) it's hard to see if the update downloaded somewhere to internal storage, and further if it could be flashed even if I found it. Is updating with an OTA like this possible? I know on basically all other phone it is not. Has anyone gotten the update to work while being unlocked, rooted, with TWRP? Thanks.

Generally you need to reflash the previous Full ROM with TWRP and then flash the OTA on top for it to work as the system must be unmodified. Alternatively, you can just flash the latest Full ROM. Currently those are not available, but that's generally how it works.
If u have installed twrp before updating the stock rom, I guess we have to wait for full rom of latest update 4.5.1 which can be flashed via twrp.
P.s. FLASHING the dwnloaded update via twrp will gives u error.. So have to wait for full rom. ?

Failed to Update (OTA, SD-Card ant ADB)

Hello,
i bought my Axon this week from Amazon Warehouse.
My problem is, that im not able to update my ROM.
I tried OTA, Install over Recovery (SD-Card), Install over Recovery (ADB Sideload).
All methods failed..
OTA is downloading the update, rebooting and than crashing. Hard to tell why, because i dont see any error logs. Just the information "Update Failed".
Next method i tried was to install over SD-Card. I downloaded the Update from ZTE, moved to my SD and tried to update. But my Smartphone always tells me "Couldn't mount /sdcard".. I tried to Format it with extFAT and FAT32 but both failed.
The last method I tried was using the ADB Sideload. I tried it with the update file, and also with the STOCK-Rom from this site: https://forum.xda-developers.com/axon-7/how-to/download-center-factory-images-ota-t3606547. But also i get an error message.. ADB tellst me "Total xfer 0.00x"...
Have i bougth a bricked Axon? Can I update somehow to the new version?
I have the option to send it back to Amazon, but it was 100€ cheaper, so i would love to fix the problem.
Kind regards,
t4ggno
Recovery stock and SD card seem to be the most reliable method.
Did you check the md5 of the zip? Also update.zip to put on root of the SD card should be the final zip, not the zip that contains another zip.
Also when booting in Android, I assume your SD is recognized, isn't it?
If so, instead of going to recovery then update from SD card, you can try to update from inside Android, from Phone settings, then Update item.
The phone should indicate the current version and the version to be updated to. Then follow the phone indication to update.
Nope, i dont checked MD5. But shouldn't be the problen. I tried many different update files, always same error.
Yes, after booting the SD card is connected and i could use it. Just the recovery mode cant mount the card.
Also the updater recognize my update. But he just boot in the recovery mode and try to update -> Same error: "couldn't mount /sdcard"
Edit 1:
But i can check the MD5 files if necessary. I just need the "correct" MD5 value to compare.
Just a guess:
Is your micro SD card size greater than or equal to 128 GB? Some version has this bug, size less than or equal to 64 GB should work better. To try if this is the case.

Kind regards,
t4ggno

Why are you using an SD card though? Put it in the root of the internal storage and it will surely pop up, then try again from Updates, not the recovery (and get the SD off the phone to avoid the phone from detecting the zip there)
Otherwise root and get TWRP and flash Tron1's stuff

Hello,
i bought my Axon this week from Amazon Warehouse.
My problem is, that im not able to update my ROM.
I tried OTA, Install over Recovery (SD-Card), Install over Recovery (ADB Sideload).

Just a guess:
Is your micro SD card size greater than or equal to 128 GB? Some version has this bug, size less than or equal to 64 GB should work better. To try if this is the case.

Its a 64 GB card Should i try a <= 32 GB card? Could be I have some lying around. Just to be sure its not a special case.
I will test it tomorrow if i found one

Hm, last time it only recognize the update file on my SD card. I will try it tomorrow again and will post the result.
TWRP isnt a option, because i dont want to lose my warranty. Also i read that TWRP can be incompatible with Stock-ROM?!

I don't know where you read that, but the closest answer that I can give you is: if you don't install SuperSU, Magisk, or the dm-verity patch, TWRP will get replaced with the stock recovery and you'll have to flash it again (~2 minutes anyways). But it is in no way incompatible. Also you can relock and stuff, but yeah better keep the warranty at least until you're sure that your phone is good.
You unpacked the zip that you downloaded right? to get the update.zip inside? Or did you download it from raysteff's thread? It should work anyways
Another thing: What is your phone's model (G, U, chinese) and what is the update that you're trying to install? I guess it will fail if it is from another model, and if you're trying to jump fron a very old MM build to a very new N build it will probably fail too. Keep that in mind.
First, what is the version of your device?
I'm guessing you are using a chinese device with modified rom. Those units can't install updates unless you first restore to original chinese rom.

I didnt unpacked the folder. A recovery normally installs zip files?! The zip file isn't packed twice. The zip contains the files directly.
I tried the package A2017G-MM-B11 and A2017G-N-B01 from the link I posted, also i tried the oficiell patch files from the axon website (B10 and Nougat)

I have a A2017G (that information i found on the back of my phone).
My phone overview tells me:
Modelnumber: ZTE A201G
Build-Number: ZTE A2017GV1.0.0B08
Android-Version: 6.0.1
Security-Patch: 1. December 2016
I can try to install the B09. Probably this patch is required to go to version 10 (and than to nougat)?
Don't know if it applies to your situation, but when the OTA for 7.x came out, there was a bug that would not allow the update to be applied if there was an SD card installed. I know I had to pull my card to get the update to take. Might try running the OTA without the card installed and see if it works.

I tried it, but doesn't work :/
The update stops at 33% with the error message "Package Mismatch".

No, B09 was a patch only for Spain.
The zip you download from the ZTE website has a bunch of numbers as name and has an update.zip inside and a PDF or sth like that. The one you have to flash is the update.zip inside, just sayin'...
If you download the zips from raysteff's thread they are already unpacked.
Try installing an older zip, like B03, then B10

The big problem still exists -> I cant mount my SD card in recovery mode, so I cant install any patch.
I really want to try B03 as you suggested, but i am unable to install it.
I will search another SD card an try to use it. Probably my SD card has some problems.
Edit: I download my files from these side: http://www.ztemobile.de/support/downloads/?product_id=2100
They dont contain a update.zip. Only many .dat, .bin, .img and .mbn files.

But install it from the internal storage and with thr Updates option on Android itself... You need to put it in the root of the internal storage or it most likely won't find the zip

Thanks! That worked very well. I did a factory reset and moved the update file directly to the root of my internal storage. After that the updater detected my update and I could install the Patch B011. After that i was able to update to Nougat trough OTA. No errors, every worked fine.
