I was able to create a TWRP backup of the ota after I installed it on my Moto X XT1095. I was able to flash this using TWRP from kitkat.
After flashing this, you will have the new ota, however it will not have the new baseband (you will retain the original baseband from your previous installation, in other words this does not include the modem). I believe that you should be able to flash this to any one of the XT variants as long as you are able to flash a custom recovery (in this case TWRP, I used 2.8.1.0 if that matters)
I had to create new folders on the internal storage due to the fact that I was unable to create a backup of kitkat. All I did was create a new folder on the internal storage called TWRP, inside that folder I created a folder called BACKUPS within that folder I created a folder that has the unique alpha-numeric name to each device, and finally in that folder I placed this backup file. TWRP/BACKUPS/unique alpha-numeric name/2014-11-09--11-34-04 LXE22.39-5. Then I booted to my TWRP recovery performed a factory data reset along with wiping cache and dalvik, then performed the restore.
If you don't know what your unique alpha-numeric folder name is, you can find this by booting to twrp and try to perform a backup (this is how I found out what my folders name was). I got an error, within that error was the path (it is verbatim and case sensitive).

After the inital OTA, I wanted to see if I could get back to 4.4.4 stock unrooted. I accomplished this by running the tool created by bhp090808. After that, I unrooted through supersu, I flashed the att modem found on graffixnyc site. I then flashed "MotoX(2014)_stock_install-recovery_sh" (with twrp) that 0.0 provided in post number 124 from the "[OTA ZIP] Pure Edition Lollipop 5.0" thread. Finally I flashed stock recovery to achieve a stock 4.4.4 system. Everything worked. After I confirmed that everything worked I did the ota again just to see if it would flash. It did, from there I was able to flash twrp, but after you reboot from twrp on the new ota you lose the twrp recovery....there is a new feature in the latest twrp recovery that allows you to move a file from pc to phone internal storage, that is how I was able to create the nand.
Funny thing is, you cannot create a backup from twrp with 4.4.4 but you can from the new 5.0 ota.

BTW, this nand is of the 5.0 just to clarify, like I said I was unable to make a nand of the 4.4.4

No, i did not. I will try that next time i downgrade. That would make things a lot easier for a person to put this in their backups.

follow along with the way i accomplished unrooting. i can confirm this works, I have done it several times now with consistent success.
BTW, this is not to be flashed, rather done through the "restore" feature of the twrp recovery. By placing this folder in the backups you will be able to access it through restore.

You will be able to take the ota, modem and all. I'm just guessing you have the XT1095.

Maybe try pushing the folder with adb.

Unfortunately, I keep getting "invalid crc file for system.ext4.win000" when trying to copy the backup to the final destination folder. Been using Solid Explorer. I'll try another just in case.
Edit: ES File Manager worked. Also, for me, TWRP 2.8.1.0 will not backup, but 2.8.0.1 will. For what's it's worth.

There is plenty of space left on the SD card to copy this but it still says the file is too large. What command do I use on adb? Can you help me? Thank you.

I have found it to be a problem with twrp try copying it to a different folder and then use twrp file explorer to move it to the backup folder. That worked for

This is a nandroid backed up from a US 2gb/16gb xt1540. It may or may not work on all models...that is to be determined.
Confirmed compatible variants:
XT1540 (US 1/8GB and 2/16GB) (Canada)
XT1541 (UK) (France)
(if your variant is not here it only means it's either not tested or not reported working. please test and report back!)
If you are unable to boot or obtain any signals after flashing this, it is highly recommended you flash a full factory image intended for your specific model and wait for another solution.
This is only meant to be a temporary fix while we wait for the big guys to build us a standard rom.

How to install:
Extract the .tar.gz archive like any zip
copy the folder to the directory where your other TWRP nandroids are on your internal storage or sd card (TWRP/BACKUPS/ZZY222____/) in here you will see folders with dates, times, rom names and info, etc in the folder names...copy the folder you extracted to this directory.
boot to TWRP
restore this backup
if coming from anything but a previous soak test, wipe userdata
wipe cache and dalvik cache
flash systemless root zip SuperSU v2.61 (optional) DO NOT flash any lower SuperSU version!!
reboot (Please be patient...it's a VERY long wait. If you pass 10 minutes waiting and it hasn't booted, force a reboot by holding the power button)

For anyone who is not in the contiguous USA (48 states) but still has xt1540 and would like to test the modem above, you can use the app linked below to back up your modem partition directly from your device before you try the new modem. This way you don't have to download a factory rom to get the right modem.img if you don't already have one backed up on your computer. You have to be rooted to use it.

The newest root method provided by chainfire does not touch the system partition. To the end-user, the only change is that when you flash a new kernel you must re-flash superSU....not your rom!!! What this means to us in this case is we can use the stock kernel provided with the soak test, flash the superSU zip, and have root, just like a Nexus device without having to wait for a permissive kernel!
*****After flashing the new systemless root zip you will be prompted to install superSU before the device reboots. DO NOT ALLOW IT TO INSTALL!!!!!! If you allow it to install with this option you will get a bootloop*****
**To view your device storage from your computer, open your notification shade, click the "USB for _____" notification, and select "transfer files (MTP)". It won't stick through a reboot, so you'll have to do this each time you boot.....the same thing goes if you unplug the cable.

TWRP wipes for you automatically in the restore process. You don't have to wipe system manually. Just restore wipe userdata and reboot!

Okay, it worked. I booted up perfectly, but as i needed my phone completely stable for today i reverted back to LP. But it worked well I think ill wait for a stable version though, it kind of lagged compared to LP.

you can extract with any of the popular file managers for android right on your phone if you'd like. It may take a little longer, but it will work.

Apparently it was just an issue with 7-zip, WinRAR handled it perfectly.
This is my first time making a flashable ROM but it should be up later today.
So I wanted to create a thread dedicated to performing this function. I know as someone who does this quite often, I like to have all my ducks in a row to ensure everything works perfectly. I'm not big on fragging my phone and then frantically trying to find a way to undo all the chaos. I do a lot of research and ask a lot of questions before doing anything.
On that note I would like to first thank all the amazing people on here, whether they be developers or just experienced Tech Guru's, everyone is always a big help. I take absolutely no credit for any of the awesomeness that can be found on XDA, I'm just creating a thread that I hope will help folks find everything in one place for this function. So here we go, I'm going to explain the way I did it, which is the way I have been doing stuff like this for years. I have a preferred method as it has always resulted in perfect flashes and no bricks, not even soft bricks. So I feel it works pretty well.
Just so it is understood, this is for the Moto X Pure, which has been bootloader unlocked and has TWRP and root installed. Also it should be noted that you need to have Developer Options enabled and USB Debugging enabled. You should also be familiar with the ADB process, to some extent, maybe you have at least heard of it.
Steps to follow:
1. Use Titanium Backup and backup all your User Apps, NOT SYSTEM APP's, system apps will not restore across updates and will most often corrupt your new install.
2. Make a Nandroid backup using TWRP, I backed up system, boot, data, and EFS, but I don't think EFS is necessary.
3. Make sure you have the Motorola Drivers installed, get them from here http://www.motorola.com/getmdmwin
4. Get Shawn5162's Restore to Stock Tool, I know others have said it's not necessary to perform a complete restore, but this is part of my process that I have always done, and it's always worked. Get it here by using one of the mirror's created by patt2k in post 6, and don't forget to thank him for the mirrors http://forum.xda-developers.com/moto-x-style/development/windows-tool-moto-x-style-pure-edition-t3199905
5. Unzip Shawn5162's zip to a folder on your desktop, and before you move onto the next step, make sure you have backed up everything valuable on your phone, such as pictures, messages, etc..., because everything is going to be erased in the next step, except for the stuff on your MicroSD. I'm so anal, I even remove the MicroSD before flashing. Connect your phone to your computer using a USB and make sure you have USB debugging enabled under Developer Options.
6. Inside the folder you created run the FLASH-ALL.bat, which will reboot your device to the bootloader and begin the restore to stock flash. This will remove root and TWRP, but will not remove the fact you have an unlocked bootloader. Your phone will reboot when complete and should boot back into your system within a short period of time.
7. Once you are rebooted, you may need to do a little setup before you get the message that a System Update is available. DO NOT waste your time installing any apps, wait until you have full root on MM before doing any of that. Once the Update message appears, accept it and download the MM update file, then install it once it is finished downloading and asks if you want to install.
8. The update takes about 20 - 25 minutes so be patient. Once complete your phone will once again boot back to system, now you have MM in it's complete unrooted greatness.
9. Now go into settings, about phone, and tap on build number a bunch of times to enable Developer Options. Then go into developer options and enable USB Debugging.
10. Next download a bunch of stuff from the following links, if you desire to install TWRP and regain root.

Modified Boot Image from here, required to perform systemless root , not sure about the Cowboy hat dude, but click on him, it will download the file.
SuperSU 2.52 from here https://download.chainfire.eu/743/SuperSU/BETA-SuperSU-v2.52.zip?retrieve_file=1
11. Next copy the modified boot file and SuperSU file directly to your internal or external SD on your phone, either works fine, although I prefer my External SD.
12. Next copy the TWRP file you downloaded into the same folder you made for Shawn5162's files. This folder has all the adb and fastboot files you need to perform the TWRP flash. Now hold shift and right click and choose open a command window here. Then ensure your device is detected by running the command adb devices, it should show your phones S/N and the word device. If it doesn't, you may need to look at your phone and respond to the prompt about allowing your computer to have access to adb. Try the command again after that. Then run the command adb reboot bootloader, which should reboot your phone to bootloader fastboot mode.
13. Once it fastboot mode run fastboot devices just to make sure your device is still detected, then run the command fastboot flash recovery twrp-2.8.7.1-clark.img. That will flash TWRP to your recovery partition. Then type the command fastboot reboot twrp-2.8.7.1-clark.img or use the volume rocker to toggle to recovery then select the power key to boot to it. Make sure you choose the slider at the bottom to allow modification. Once on the main screen you can choose reboot and then select recovery. This makes sure that you have booted to TWRP at least once, and ensures by rebooting to it, you can get back to it.
14. Now perform a Nandroid Backup, using the TWRP Backup option, of your completely stock MM system, data, boot, and EFS partitions. Enable compression if you like and store it to your External SD if you have one. This allows you to have an unrooted backup on your SD, which is good for future updates. After the Nandroid is complete now flash the modified boot image zip using the TWRP Install feature, and when it's complete, then flash the SuperSU zip file. After I always perform the option to erase Dalvik and Cache, I just think it is a good thing to do, it's probably placebo, but I do it anyhow.
15. Go back to TWRP Home and choose reboot and select system. Your device will reboot and you now have a fully updated and rooted Moto X Pure on MM.

Hope this helps folks that are concerned about performing these procedures. I can say that it worked perfectly for me with no issues at all, but of course I take no responsibility if it doesn't work for you and causes your device to fail. Again these are similar steps I have taken in the past with other devices and I have never had a single brick, so hopefully it works for others as well.

I think I am in way over my head. I am receiving my phone Friday and was looking to unlock to root but from the looks of it, I will not be able to do that.
I've never unlocked & rooted a phone before. So all that looks like the bible to an uneducated man "me".

If I'm not mistaken it will download to your phone but not be able to be installed because of an error

Yeah, if you rooted already, you must reflash the original boot.img. Then update, and then restore your root. Read here:

The modified boot zip breaks the wifi. You can root by flashing superSU 2.62, I think, or any SuperSU zip that is specifically systemless.

The partition always fails. Just ignore it. You should be able to downgrade the bootloader. I have been able to so I don't know why you would be having issues with that unless your bootloader is locked/re-locked.

I've been struggling with my phone from day 1- hopefully someone here has experienced and solved some of what I've been facing.
First some info:
I have a non-rooted XPE 1575 with an unlocked bootloader. I have never been able to receive an OTA update and needed to install 6.0 using a clean install of a stock ROM. I now can not successfully install the security OTA update (i get a dead Andy 'Error'). I have flashed stock recovery, boot image, and system chunks. No luck.
More alarming to me (and possibly a hint at what is going on) is that i can not even back up my phone using TWRP (v2.8.7.0). My internal memory is too small for this, so when i try backing up to my 128 GB sdcard (formatted to be adaptable), i get the following error E: Unable to create folder: /external_sd/TWRP/BACKUPS (errorno=5) E: Failed to make backup folder.
So, i can't stay 'stock-like' and just use OTA updates, and i can't backup my phone and then try to install a clean updated ROM.
Any ideas from anyone?
Try using the latest twrp.
Wow- I thought I was on the latest. I actually had it downloaded, but for some reason flashed the older one. The new version resolved this issue and I now have a backup, so I'm in good shape. Thanks so much!

After the installation you will have TWRP recovery 3.0.2-0 with the data partition erased and unencrypted if you use method 2, which means you will have ~ 3GB more space and ~ 10 seconds faster boot speed **Always backup your data before flashing something a total stranger gives you!
Method 1: Flash update through TWRP recovery (keeps your data and current recovery)
1- You need to have TWRP installed on your phone.
2- Download this flashable zip..
3- Copy to the phone internal storage and flash via recovery.
4- Reboot. Your data should still be intact and your OS is upgraded to N Preview 2. If your internal storage is unencrypted before flashing it remains unencrypted.
For some people this didn't work. It seems to be the case when you have been encrypted by your previous Android N installation, in which case TWRP seems to have difficulty reading the file, and that seemingly Preview 2 doesn't play nice with TWRP. It works best when you are unencrypted and your recovery is 3.0.2-0. Thanks to @gammaxgoblin, @blitzerking1, @Michael in ATL, @HueyT, and @PhillyFlyer for debugging and hints.
Method 2: Flash update using a computer (wipes everything, unencrypts data, and upgrades TWRP)
1- ALL of your data including the internal storage will be lost so make a backup. (If you know what you are doing and you are coming from unencrypted Marshmallow you can modify the instructions to not lose data but I won't help you with that).
2- Download this file. Note that it is NOT a flashable zip.
3- Unzip into a folder of your choice on your PC.
4- Open a command window (cmd) and cd to this directory. then run the following:

5- Wait until prompted, then press key to reboot the phone.
6- Your data is wiped and your OS is upgraded to N with unencrypted internal storage. Your TWRP is also upgraded to 3.0.2-0.
Technical details: this is a repacking of the Google image with a modified Kernel and removed userdata and recovery images. Everything else is stock.
Problem downloading from Mega on a mobile browser? Change the page setting to "Request desktop site".
About root and other issues
To obtain root after installing this update you should flash SuperSU 2.71 (or higher) in recovery. Get it from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133. Despite the fact that SuperSU 2.71 is supposedly re-written for Android N, there are still some apps that seem to have a problem obtaining root. The commonest complaint on this thread so far has been about Adaway. If you want to block Ads just manually do what Adaway does. Download a hosts file from any ad block list server such as http://winhelp2002.mvps.org/hosts.htm, copy the files on your sdcard, boot the phone into recovery, and using the TWRP file manager replace the file /system/etc/hosts with this file and set its permissions to 644 (rw-r--r--).

Can you open the zip that you downloaded and see if you can see the file that it is complaining about? What version of twrp are you using?

Same error for me as well. I can extract the zip and view the file it is talking about. I also tried on TWRP 3.0.1-0 and TWRP 3.0.2-0
Everything is working perfect for me with the new zip. I have a unencrypted phone and used 3.0.2 TWRP.

Seems like TWRP is having a lot of troubles with each version of N Preview's encryption. I have same problem with both N6 and N6P, as do others in that forum too....:/
i have latest twrp, download a ota update from ofiicial site in zip file and flash it over in twrp. boot normally and works fine. only flash supersu 2.71 and it's unencrypted at all.
ps. TB not works for me ind N prew2 so i flash perv1, restore from TB and flash prew2 over it.

Just to help with the installation of method 2, holding shift and right clicking a blank space in your unzipped folder, you can click open command window here. That will save you having to CD all the way to it.

I did method 1. It upgraded fine. All my data remained. It killed root (expected this) and my TWRP. I was unencrypted before attempting.
I went and downloaded the latest TWRP and flashed via fastboot. Then downloaded latest SuperSU from http://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/supersu/2014-09-02-supersu-v2-05-t2868133 and flashed it via my newly installed TWRP. Root confirmed and all is well.

You may have to flash a previous stable release of marshmallow or lollipop from Google first and then try this because something seems to be corrupted in your system.

They don't have images like Google devices, but flashable firmwares.
http://lenovo-forums.ru/files/category/287-lenovo-tab4-a10-tb4-x304l/ has it, second from the bottom, underneath all the OTAs. Double check that you got the 4F and not the 4L one.
I don't have this device so I cannot help you with it if you have issues, nor can I say this will work for you. I also really don't profess to be any kind of an expert so do ask in one of the other Tab 4 threads if needed... but I do have the TB-8704F & have restored it to stock several times and I would assume the devices to be identical in process so I can give you a guide if needed! The general path is:
Download the zip and extract it
Download and install Xiaomi Mi Flash (some say to use QFIL but it often throws up errors and sometimes requires flashing in multiple passes, when Mi Flash doesn't)
Plug your device into your PC
Put your device into Emergency Download Mode, easiest way for you is probably to first reboot to TWRP which you luckily already have installed
In TWRP go to Advanced>Terminal>type Reboot EDL
Open Mi Flash and it should see your device. Click Select, open the images directory in your extracted firmware and it should detect the flashing process XML
Click Flash, then leave everything to complete
I will warn you that you will lose everything on your device. There's no way around this that I know of, nor would I suggest it anyway. Just back up everything before doing the restore.
+ Good luck! But honestly I'd first weigh up whether you really want to update to 8.1 since you're already on a perfectly-working device. They already pushed the OTA once and had to retract it because of the amount of serious errors it had - but that's your call entirely.

bro help me unlocked the bootloader yesterday and flashed recovery but then decided to downgrade the system with system sparse image in fastboot mode provided by o.p. of rooting thread, but now it is not booting up just showing lenovo logo and in fastboot mode again
