Connecting to home wifi faster - X Style (Pure) Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

First my setup:

Is there anyway to connect to my homewifi faster? I've selected to only show 5ghz wifi networks and I'm only seeing two when I enable wifi yet it dosen't connect to my wifi for maybe 5-10 seconds. Is this a problem with the rom/kernel? I don't remember connecting being this slow when I was on stock 5.1.
If I can change connect speed through the rom/kernel that would be best. Otherwise is there an app that can do it?

i cant see why you would choose 5ghz over 2.4ghz maybe thats the reason for your problem

5Ghz allows for faster throughput (more bandwidth available) - uses 80 mhz channels vs 20 mhz on the 2.4ghz.
I noticed the slow connection too. Seems if you open wifi settings, it connects immediately.

Did you try changing the channel in your router?

Haven't tried changing the channel. Will report back after I get home after work.

I can say that problem is with ROM.
It has very slow auto connection time.
To connect faster I am using:
- drop down notification menu - tap wifi menu where its possible to choose wifi's from that setting - just wait, as soon as it turns on wifi and actually starts to scan area it will auto connect faster than when you just turn on wifi and wait.

I confirm this behavior on XT1575 as well. It takes quite a long time to connect when i enable WiFi.
But if I enter the WiFi settings, it connects instantly.
And i think it's like this since Android 6. I don't recall having this issue on Android 5.

I can't say I've noticed any problems connecting to WiFi networks at home.
I'm running 6.0 stock (Feb 2016 security update) rooted to hell and back.
I have access to five different WiFi networks at home, and am registered to all five for convenience.
I use an app called Best WiFi to auto-connect to the strongest signal whenever my current signal drops below a user-configurable strength threshold.
Perhaps that's the reason I'm not feeling this issue?

I've been using this app for years, since Android 4.0, and across four or five different devices now.
Edit - Before the inevitable questions. I live in a basement and have my own personal WiFi network down there. Upstairs, we have two network piping out of the office (2.4 GHz and an associated 5 GHz link). For the far side of the home, we have a WiFi extender that mirrors and extends those two signals coming from the office (2.4 GHz-Ext and 5 GHz-Ext).

My report:
Whether connecting to 2.4 Ghz (20/40 Mhz) or 5 Ghz (20/40/80 Mhz) the connectspeed is between 5-15 seconds if singlepressing on the wifitoggle. If longpressed it takes about 2-3 seconds. Either this is a problem with the rom or this is the intended behaviour in Marshmallow. But this was not the behaviour in Lollipop as far as I remember. Of course you could argue this a nonissue since longpressing the wifitoggle is the solution. However I would like singlepressing to behave the same since I use Gravitybox to hide the statusbar when pressing 2-state tiles.

Yeah this is a huge pain in the ass. I set up a WiFi shortcut on my home screen so I would start using WiFI more to save battery, but it takes so long for it to finally connect. I also have Tasker turn WiFi on in the morning when my alarm goes off, and it takes so long. It took a few seconds in Lollipop, and now it takes 10+ seconds in Marshmallow. It's ridiculous. Anyway there is no real fix except going into the settings or tapping the drop-down toggle multiple times, as others stated.

I notice the same thing too. Wifi takes long to connect on boot. When I go to connect wifi off, it always shows the routers in the previous area before showing what's in the current area. I turn wifi off when leaving home. I'll connect to a public router, but will still show my home router before showing any around me. I had a Galaxy S5 before and wifi connected right away.

First off, I am not sure if the OP is turning wifi on first when arriving at home and then seeing the delay, or if Wifi is already ON when you arrive home (EDIT: just reread OP and it appears you are turning it ON - see below), but I leave Wifi ON all the time and do not see any delay when I get home (I pull into my garage and my apps are already updating via my home wifi before I park my car).
There are various steps involved in "getting onto wifi" that don't just involve the client device (authentication to the access point; getting an available IP address from your AP or a separate router, and the stability/software quality of those devices, for example). but you may want to consider a few things to speed up the process at home regardless if Wifi is on, or you turn it on first:
1) go into "Saved Networks" in your wireless settings and "forget" any networks you don't need
2) make sure the device on your network issuing IP addresses (DHCP server software built into your router or AP, whichever you use - also make sure only ONE of the them is acting as DHCP server) has enough available IP's in its pool - better yet, assign the same IP to your MotoX's MAC address (set up a static IP in your routers LAN/DHCP settings if it has them so your MotoX gets the same IP every time)
3) while I agree with another poster about avoiding the 2.4 GHz for Wifi (congestion and more interference), even many 802.11n client radios today don't support 5GHz so keep that in mind if you shut down 2.4GHz in your home completely
4) Use WPA2 with PSK for authentication AND make sure your home SSID is being broadcast (not hidden, which they really aren't anyway with the right tools - A strong WPA2 PSK password is better security even if the world can see your SSID.
4) If you do turn Wifi On and Off, consider leaving it ON and see if that helps your connection time (I suspect it will If you are concerned about battery drain, you can disable wifi during sleep in wireless settings, but I don't have a battery issue with Wifi on 24/7. The Wifi radio beaconing for SSID's or even staying connected to an SSID in the background, when you're not using Wifi, is a very minimal power drain compared to having your screen brightness higher than you need (you can however turn off the annoying wifi network notification setting).

For those with this delay, are you running xposed with gravitybox? Tried disabling gravitybox? It maybe GB that's introducing the delay. Need feedback from those running stock.
If stock exhibits similar behavior then it's probably characteristic of the quick toggles in the moto x. The delay appears to be in the actual wifi connection phase, not acquiring ip. As once it actually connects, IP acquisition is almost instant. Toggling wifi off then on directly through settings is very fast, maybe 3-4 seconds.
I have a moto g lte (xt1045) on cm13 which takes about 5 seconds to connect after toggling wifi off then back on. The moto x takes a good 15 seconds.

@ech1253: I've checked everything you suggested and you are right, having wifi on will make it connect almost instantly.
@gpz1100: I'm running xposed with gravitybox. Disabling gravitybox didn't change anything. I'd rather not uninstall xposed and/or go back to stock so if someone on stock without xposed could chime in that would be helpful.

It does it on stock android 6 for me and on a custom rom as well. Since day 1 with the moto x but at least wifi works just a long delay that no other android flagship from suffers from. :S

for those with wifi 'broken' try to change your router settings to WPA2 personal (TKIP+AES) that seems to work for me now,

I found my solution: in my router I unchecked the option WMM (Wi-Fi-multimedia)-settings (2.4GHz b/g/n). After I activated it, my data speeds increased enormously. Try it & report!

My n4 will not connect to any of the WPA2 AP's around here.
I have the opposite problem. I can connect to my WPA2 router at home just fine but cannot connect to the WEP wifi at work. Well, not reliably. I've gotten connected twice, but was unable to recreate the conditions.

I had speed problems with my 5GHz band at home. Connected, but couldn't get over 1Mbps on my 30+ connection. Connected to the 2.4Ghz band and I get significantly faster speeds. Haven't had problems connecting though.

I've noticed similar behavior, seems like my 5ghz signal strength is much weaker than my 2.4ghz signal according to my n4.
So this n4 is picky about. Certain WiFi networks.configs

Sometimes, my N4 loses wifi connection at work. It's inconsistent. My work wifi is open but MAC filtered.
There have been 3-4 times when I noticed that it lost wifi connection. I had to turn off wifi radio and back on to reconnect.
OTOH, connection to home DD-WRT wifi router is rock solid.
Set lease time for as long as possible, it normally this is 2 weeks..
sent via xda premium with Nexus 7 or Nexus 4!
I flashed my stock recovery backup and my wifi is working again!

Hello, I am also having problems with WIFI. I've tried a lot of things (change the router configuration, the cellular exchange kernel, etc ...) but I could not fix this problem. Can you give any more ideas? I've even thought about buying another router but can be giving the same problem.
I used my wife's phone as a router and it works normally, but when I connect directly to the router from home and he trasfere data only for a few moments and then transferring data, although still seem the symbol of wifi connected.
I found changing a setting on the Nexus 4 seems to have remedied most of my WiFi issues. Forcing the WiFi frequency band to 2.4GHz only instead of Auto appears to have done the trick for me.
In WiFi if you select Settings and Advanced under Wi-Fi frequency band there is an option to force 5GHz or 2.4GHz with the default on Auto.

will android switch to a better wifi if available?

Heyho, i currently have access to my wifi as well as to my neighbors network as my wifi gets weak while i am in the garden. I feel like android isnt awitching to my neighbors wifi automatically. Only when my wifi is completely gone, android will look for a new one.
I thought about making a task with tasker which looks for another wifi as soon as the current wifi strength goes below 25%.
Or is/should android do that aleady on its own?

In wifi -> Advanced settings there's an option to avoid poor connection. I have no idea what it actually does, but give it a try.
I did the test with my router, which supports 2 frequencies.
Assuming both networks are saved in the phone, it connect automatically to the one with better signal or look for an alternative if signal is lost.
Thats what I mean, it will connect to the other WiFi if the connection is lost. But if the connection is crippled (bad) enough to not handle a music stream, but still "availabe" it will not switch to the other WiFi eventhough that other WiFi has 100% signal strength ?
I activated the "use wlan only if good strength available".. lets see how this works
I have multiple APs in my house and the only way I've ever got it to switch is by toggling wifi off and on (or loosing the first signal completely). This is an Android issue IINM, my GS2 and my N4 both have this issue.
I tried the "do not use weak WiFi".. didnt work.

It has never worked for me either. Didn't work on my GSM GNex or with the N4.
I think it's how most WiFi clients work, otherwise if you were in the middle of 2 equal signals, it would spend more time disconnecting and reconnecting creating a DOS attack on the 2 AP's and leaving you with no data.
As for 2 home wireless routers, use the same SSID and authentication settings for both, and put one on channel 1 and the other on channel 11.
Make one a AP only (no router, no firewall, no dhcp server) and connect it to a client wired port on the first one. You can roam between them like people in large offices do.
or I try to make a tasker profile
if wifi strenght below 20% and another wifi is available with more than 30%, connect to that one.. then wait 5 minutes ?

I would think the network had non-functional DHCP, but I can connect with a Lenovo notebook instantly from the same place to the same network and AP.
The router that causes the problem is a Cisco 1200 series AP, operating vanilla 802.11g, with an open network, in the 2.4 GHz band.
I have tried all the Wi-Fi-related options in the N10, and removed and recreated the connection. I have found nothing that helps.
Has anyone that has seen this issue found a solution?

Seen this a million times, and it's one of my lingering dislikes about Android (although to be fair, I've seen the analogue -- much less -- on my iPad as well). Toggling the Wi-Fi state on and off like mad (or Airplane Mode) usually does the trick for me...eventually. Have you tried rebooting the router (relatively sure you've have, sorry) or using an app like Wi-Fi Analyzer from the Play Store to see if there's any channel interference? Mobile devices don't always deal well with overlapping channel use.

I cannot reboot the router because I have the problem in a public place (an airport). I do not have the problem with my own router.
I do use a WiFi analyzer, and there is no interference issue. The AP is on a clear channel, and the signal is very strong.
So the only and best solution it to turn Wi-Fi on an off rapidly until it works? Really?????

Never said it wasn't stupid. It's possible that the airport is using a network hack to facilitate its captive portal (I assume it uses some kind of gateway?), and Android is really bad about network "misconfigurations."

[Q] G2 WiFi speeds N+AC

Does anyone notice there's a big bug with WiFi on the G2?
I have 2 WiFi ac routers, one at home and one at the Office, an Asus RT-ac66U and a Linksys ea6700. Both capable of 1750mbps max speeds.
Internet speeds are 120/6 and 200/20.
Scenario is exactly the same for both routers;
When fresh reboot the router, G2 connects at a speed of 433Mbps.
Speedtests show results of 119/6 at home and 190/20 at the office.
Great you would say!
But here goes. Once WiFi get disconnected and reconnected, speeds go down to ~40mbps. No matter what I do!
These are N speeds, not AC
When looking at connection settings it still shows a link of 433mbps
Tested dozens of times, on both routers, so it has to be an issue with the G2.
Anyone else noticed the same??

I'm not an expert on wi-fi, but have stumbled through setting up several routers around the house. But I do not have an ac router.
Is the home router in mixed mode? Ignoring a/b/c for a moment and focusing on g and n (and implying ac), I have two wireless routers in the house. One runs N only (but both 2.4 ghz and 5 ghz) and the other runs G only. Now, my N router is capable of running in mixed mode (to handle both N and G) BUT in mixed mode, my max speed when connected in N is lower than it would be if I ran in dedicated N mode.
Most of my devices now are at least N (2.4 or 5) but I have an older printer and wii that only do G. But as mentioned above, rather than run my best router in mixed mode, I run 2 separate routers, one in N only and one in G only.
Maybe something similar might help with your ac speeds?

Once connected for the second time and up to the router no more AC speeds...

Is there a way to test LAN speeds on Android? I have the same Asus router but my wan speeds are so pitiful that I wouldn't be able to tell if the phone was dropping to N speeds. If I could test speeds to my desktop across the local network I might be able to test what you are experiencing.

Think a google search would come up with lots of options.

There's no way to check which band you are connected to.
Router doesn't have an option to choose AC Only, only N +AC
And in the mean time I have tested it with 4 AC routers, Asus RT-AC66U, Netgear R6250, Linksys EA6700, D-Link 868L.
With all routers exactly the same conclusion. First time everything is great. Excellent speeds. If you never turn off WiFi it remains at high speed.
But once you turn off WiFi on the Phone and turn it back on it immediately drops to ~36-40mbps max (N Speeds).
This remains until I rebooted each router and after that full speeds again.
It must be something in drivers LG used.
There's the solution to for, I'm sure of it by now.

I am not sure if the following app supports AC, but a very helpful and free app I use is called "Wifi Analyzer". I can't post links but that is the exact name (author = farproc).
It has many useful tools/functions that you may find helpful, switchable between 2.4 and 5.0 ghz, channel scanner, etc.
Does your 2.4 ghz N and 5.0 ghz N/AC have different SSID's? From what I read, AC is 5 ghz only and N can be either 2.4 ghz or 5.0 ghz. I wonder if you are dropping from 5.0 AC to 2.4 N because the 2.4 N is being detected as "stronger signal" than the 5.0 AC at reconnect time?
I named my 2.4 ghz N SSID as "Blah" and 5.0 ghz N SSID as "Blah_5ghz" just so I know what frequency I'm on at a glance (using a widget that shows the SSID) but many routers by default will have both SSID's the same, making it less obvious what band you are connected to. I also use an app called "WIFI Prioritizer" (author Robert Botha), which will allow me to connect or re-connect in the SSID order I specify: i.e. when I get home I will connect to SSID "Blah" (2.4 ghz N because it has the longest range). Every 5 mins (you can specify), it checks to see if my SSID "Blah_5Ghz" is in range and will switch to it if it is (you can also set signal strength connect and disconnect thresholds).

My Phone is packed with tools like Wifi Analyser, InSISDer etc etc atm
I always separate 2.4 and 5ghz networks to be able to see exactly what's going on but thanks for the heads up :good:
From further investigation and thinking, and with your suggestion about stronger signals;
Thing is, AC routers are more or less all simultanious routers.
That combines 2.4 and 5ghz signals for higher transfer speeds.
I think in there lies the problem when drivers are not 100%.
In theory 2.4 signals are stronger then 5ghz signals and have wider range.
But in testing I made sure that I was in the same room and no more than 2 meters away from the router.
when testing it showed equal signal strength up to -20 so really strong signals.
Therefore I concluded that N on 2.4 whas equally strong as 5ghz and then again I isolated 5ghz SSID so that's not it unfortunately.
I promised to stay away but I can't resist!
Have you tried some of the more generic troubleshooting tips (on the home network), such as trying with no security or lesser security (WEP) to see if it still reconnects at the lower (N) speeds? I realize that usually that test is of course for a more basic issue than yours but maybe the G2 has trouble handling security overhead.
Some devices and routers just don't like each other (as many know), but 4 different routers...?! Gotta be the G2 side, as you've surmised. Wish I knew someone with an ac router so I could test myself. I'm debating on getting an ac router but you've got me spooked! (kidding/teasing)
Well haven't tried lower or no security.
When I have the chance (aka the wife is away and not *****ing about wifi not available ) I'll sure try that.
But I don't think that WEP will be an option because AC requires AES protection if I'm not mistaken.
But really do not be afraid to get yourself an AC router hehe.
No honestly, I've tested 4 routers with:
AC Capable:
HTC One. Goes all the way to max isp speeds. All the time, no issues
LG G2.
Not AC Capable.
IPhone 5. Max speed at 5ghz (constantly tested) is ~90-100mpbs.
HTC One X. Max speed at 5ghz (constantly tested) is ~70-90mpbs.
So even if your hardware maybe not be capable of AC speeds you still get excellent connections
Oh and for the record.
Here's my personal listing of the hardware I've tested. From best to well not so good.
1. Netgear R6250.
Excellent constant speeds. No drops whatsoever with around 6 devices connected. Excellent range!
2. Asus RT-AC66U
Shame Asus introduced a new wifi driver some time ago which doesn't perform that well. Constant speed drops.
They know about it but thusfar no solution.
When you get this one, stay on old firmware for now!
3. D-link 868L
Real looker this one. Can be put in plain sight in the room like a picture frame :silly:
Great constant speeds, but some drops here and there.
Excellent range.
4. Linksys EA6700
Linksys is sold to Belkin by Cisco.
Up to now I have never seen anything good coming from Belkin!
What a piece of crap.
With a really thin wall between router and phones coverage went down more dan half. Hell even when distance less than 2 meters away coverage was about -45.
Do not get this crap!
I wonder... the wireless N spec (not sure if also AC) calls for devices and routers to have a 'low power mode', which may or may not be enabled in routers and/or phones (e.g. GS3) by default. According to some article I read, newer routers may go into a power saving mode if it detects low traffic and supposedly ramp up when the traffic increases.
Possibly it doesn't ramp up fast enough when a new device connects and the device mistakes it for not having the highest speed (AC) capability. Might explain fast speeds after router bootup but not later. If there is any truth to that (no clue here), it might speed itself up either by testing with a larger file or seeing if the "2nd connect" condition changes while say, streaming videos from the PC to the Xbox or watching Netflix on the main TV. Certainly, either would be considered high traffic and if there is no change to the 2nd connect, well -- there goes that idea.
Is there a wifi power saving mode on the G2 like there is on the GS3? (i.e. dialing *#0011# to turn it off).

Well, there is a setting in wifi, advanced to minimize use of wifi when screen is off. Sounds like a power save mode to me.
But, just tested it and that makes no difference.
With that setting deactivated on the G2 still at first boot AC speeds and when I switch off and on wifi I still get N speeds max.
And besides that, on the Asus router there's a setting called "Enable WMM APSD". Which stands for "Automatic Power Save Delivery".
I read up on that and the custom firmware guru RMerlin writes about that setting that especially Android devices could suffer from that setting.
So I disabled that a long time ago.
On other routers I couldn't find such setting.
But to iron that setting out I just tested it once more.
First with setting off. Still first connect AC speeds, after turn off/on back to N speed.
Then turned wifi off, enabled the setting and rebooted the router.
But this time to let the supposedly power save kick in I let my Phone idle for 15 minutes so that it surely was in deep sleep.
Then turned screen on, and again AC speeds when first connected.
After that turned wifi off, screen of for 15 minutes. Turned screen on again and once more N speed.
And link speed is always shown as 433mbps btw, which is correct.
There's just some bug in driver code by LG which doesn't work correctly.
I'm more and more convinced of that.
For now I just keep wifi on all the time so that I always get full speeds.
Batt is capable enough so no problem there

I found a tool to test local network speed. It uses two android devices for a p2p test or you can install a server program on your PC. I'll do some testing and see if I can reproduce what you are seeing. I can do with phone what I want until wifi gets turned off.
Then a reboot of the router is required to get AC speed back.
No need to reboot the phone.

Between my wife on her laptop, my son on his Chromebook and my daughter streaming Netflix on our Roku, I hardly ever have a chance to reboot the router without someone complaining
Since I haven't rebooted my router in days, from what you are saying I shouldn't see anything above N speeds until I reboot the router. Do you actually have to turn off wifi on the phone to have it drop from AC to N or is it enough to leave the range of the wifi and then come back? And does if turning it off is required, do I have to be connected to the router at the time I turn phone wifi off?
I'll try testing this weekend.

Going out of range isn't a problem as long as you don't have an app or setting on in wifi, advanced to switch off wifi.
As long as wifi isn't turned off I can go everywhere, in&out of range, other routers connect but speeds remain AC, everywhere on every router.
I can reproduce everytime that when I turn off wifi on the phone and back on from then on I only get ~36-40mbps max.
It's like the phone thinks that's max capable speed altough wifi link speed is again shown as 433mbps.
If I have switched off wifi on the phone and back on, on all 4 AC routers I tested all needed a router reboot to gain full AC speeds again.
Oh and maybe a small tip, I always say to the misses at home that there's a small problem with connection so a quick reboot is required.
Up to now that still works

I just did a few tests from my phone to my pc with 100MB data sets. I got between 200 and 260 Mbit/s down both before and after toggling my phone's wifi off and on. Didn't seem to make a difference. I got about 6Mbit up.
So, I didn't seem to experience the problem you have. But try repeating what I've done with this local network app. Maybe you won't have the issue with it that you are seeing on your WAN connection.

Wow and do you really see real transfer rates of 25-30 MB/s to your G2?
I'm using a Qualcomm Atheros based AC-router and my G2 (running latest CM11) hardly goes over 10 Mbit ~ 1,5 MB/s. Weak I know. (Confirmed 433 Mbit link using a wifi app.)
Maybe I need a broadcom-router like yours to see some real AC-speeds.

Wifi issues, router/modem stops working

Hi. Have an S8 plus exynos. Have had big trouble since last phone update with wifi. Get this "!" Icon besides the wifi symbol.. router stops workin for all internet and ofcourse phone wont work either. Tried setting manual static ip for phone and router but no help. So im stumblin in the dark here. Any suggestions??

Recent system updates have made this problem more frequent for both the S7 and S8.
If your router broadcasts both 5mh and 2.4mh signals (i.e. an AC router), and your connection messes up when at some longer distance from the router or through multiple walls, change router settings so that the 5 and 2.4 signals have different SSID names. Turn off any "smart connect" option. Then find the 2.4mh signal in your phone's WiFi settings and make that auto reconnects, and forget the 5mh signal. This forces the 2.4 connection when you're home which has much longer range than the 5.
If that only partially helps, go into router settings and switch the 2.4mh signal channel from auto to one of these three: 1, 6, or 11, whichever seems most stable when you reconnect.
If your router has Qos (quality of service) settings, be sure your phone is in a higher priority level.
Lastly, be sure your router has the latest firmware.
Doing all this fixed the problem for me but may not be a universal fix for everyone. Good luck!

Another thing to try is assigning your phone a reserved ip address via your router settings. This makes a faster connection that should work every time. Router sees your phone's MAC address and gives it the same ip address connection every time.

If the problem affects all devices connected it sounds to me like your router has a problem. Try a factory reset, set it up as new and see how it goes. If it's still acting up, you probably need a new router.

Indeed, also try to connect your S8 to a local, public wifi network (like in a bar or coffee shop) and check if it connects there.
If it does, then the issue is certainly with your router.
